by Mike Andrew SGN Staff Writer U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered what is almost certainly the most important speech ever given by a U.S. official on LGBT rights, before the United Nations in Geneva on December 6. “Like being a woman, like being a racial, religious, tribal, or ethnic minority, being LGBT does not make you less human,” she said. “And that is why Gay rights are human rights and human rights are Gay rights.” Several U.N. delegates reportedly fled the hall as Clinton concluded her remarks. Those who remained gave her a standing ovation. The speech was made in advance of International Human Rights Day, December 10. On the same day, President Obama issued a directive to U.S. officials ordering “all agencies ensee Clinton page 7

Experienced political consultant Zach Silk has been hired to serve as the campaign manager for Washington United for Marriage, the coalition of organizations, congregations, unions, and businesses working together to secure civil marriage in 2012 for loving, committed Gay and Lesbian couples in Washington state. According to officials, Silk, who is a straight ally and is a selfproclaimed “happily married man with two kids,” has a range of organizing, communication, and state legislative experience earned as an environmental advocate and as a campaign manager in Washington state. “I’ve been working in progressive politics most of my career,” Silk, 36 years old and a Washington resident since 2001, told Seattle Gay News. “I’ve always been interested in striving for positive social change.” He said that, by accepting the position of campaign manager, he has been “given the opportunity to make a big difference in pursuing

President Obama issued an unprecedented directive to all federal agencies on December 6 ordering them to work to promote and protect LGBT rights in foreign countries. The presidential memorandum see manager page 21
