Boeing challenges marriage equality No pension benefits for same-sex spouses, company says

No more Mr. Nice Bigot Anti-Gay leader calls for a harder line after Nov. 6 defeat

by D’Anne Witkowski SGN Contributing Writer Remember that old saying about trying the same thing over and over and expecting different results being the definition of insanity? Well, if that saying is true, then I’ve got a live one for you.

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, a group that (surprise!) tells lies about Gay people, issued an official declaration of insanity on November 8, just two days after LGBT equality won big at the polls.

As you might recall, marriage equality won across the board in Washington, Maine, Maryland, and Minnesota. Not to mention the fact that President Barack Obama was re-elected. Not only is he the first president to openly support equal rights for Lesbians and Gays, he’s the first president to be re-elected after openly supporting Lesbians and Gays.

Ah, yes. Those poor, timid Christians are too afraid to stand up to Big Gay. It’s heartbreaking. Then again, maybe Gays are “unapologetic” in the fight for equality because they don’t have anything to apologize for. And maybe some of these “timid”

Of course, LaBarbera would probably respond to such an idea with, “Stop that crazy talk!”

IT’S JUST WRONG He writes, “Pro-family advocates must stop looking for short cuts and return to their principled duty of educating citizens – especially brainwashed youth — on why homosexual behavior is wrong, unnatural, unhealthy, and – most important – changeable.”

In other words, double down on the stuff that isn’t working.

The thing is, “returning” to the “principled duty of educating citizens” that Gays are a disgusting mistake that nobody likes is returning to the helm of a sinking ship. The word is out – just about everyone knows someone who is Gay now. Gays and Lesbians aren’t creatures lurking in shame in the shadows. LaBarbera and his ilk can’t dehumanize an entire group of people who have proven their humanity over and over again.

“While politics does not decide moral and spiritual Truth, it is an indicator of the heart of our nation,” LaBarbera writes.

And it looks like that heart is finally in the right place.

TOLERANCE = WEAKNESS After such a scathing electoral rebuke of anti-Gay measures and arguments, have people like LaBarbera learned anything?

Yes, indeed. According to LaBarbera, what they’ve learned is that they aren’t being anti-Gay enough.

LaBarbera writes, “We need to stop conceding the moral high ground in a fearful bid to appear ‘tolerant’: one pro-family group, Protect Marriage Maine, asserted that ‘same-sex couples are entitled to respect’ – a claim at odds with historic Scriptural teaching.”

Got that? LaBarbera is saying that marriage equality won in that state because “pro-family” folks are just too damn nice to the Gays. No more of this namby-pamby, call-for-respect BS. Bring out the pitchforks!

LaBarbera continues, “Sadly, there is a ‘passion gap’ or maybe a ‘boldness gap’ between LGBT activists and their overly defensive pro-family opponents. Many timid, guilt-ridden Christians make rotten culture

Ex-Gay no more The walls are closing in on the ‘reparative therapy’ industry

by Wayne Besen The Huffington Post In 1998, 15 religious-right organizations launched a huge advertising campaign to promote “Pray Away the Gay” programs.

Anti-Gay activist Robert Knight called the “Truth in Love” campaign the “Normandy landing in the larger cultural wars.”

Things didn’t quite work out as Knight had hoped. In 2000, I photographed their poster boy, John Paulk, in a Washington, D.C., Gay bar. In 2003, I joined attorney Mike Hamar in reporting that the star of their TV campaign, Michael Johnston, was hooking up with men he was meeting on the Internet.

The already shredded credibility of such groups markedly deteriorated this year after Exodus International’s leader, Alan Chambers, said that his “ex-Gay” ministry did not work for 99.9 percent of clients. This followed a similar admission from Love in Action ministry leader John Smid. The icing on the cake occurred this spring when Dr. Robert Spitzer renounced his infamous 2001 “ex-Gay” study claiming that some Gay people could go straight.

The cherry on top of the icing came last month when California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill prohibiting so-called reparative therapy for minors in California, which greatly damaged an industry where more than half of the clients are youth.

TURNING THE TABLES This week, the rest of the chickens came home to roost and the roles from 1998 were

taking advantage of desperate and vulnerable people. Every mainstream medical and mental health association in America rejects so-called reparative therapy, including the American Psychological Association (APA), the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The APA says that attempts to change one’s sexual orientation can lead to “anxiety, depression, and self-destructive behavior.”

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, LGBT teens who experienced negative feedback from their family were eight times more likely to have attempted suicide, six times as vulnerable to severe depression, and three times more likely to use drugs (Caitlin Ryan, San Francisco State University, June 2009). Reparative therapy divides families in the name of family values, which can sometimes lead to the “negative feedback” that causes LGBT youth to harm themselves.

Still, the snake-oil salesmen blithely ignore these potent warnings because they are not concerned with the mental health of youth. They disregard facts to peddle fiction and engage in wishful thinking that they cynically refer to as therapy. Homosexuality has not been considered a mental illness for

40 years. Yet, these opportunists magically claim that they can heal people who are not sick and fix people who are not broken.

he said, “but I’ve never seen the public’s attention go to an issue like this.”

FEDERAL VS. STATE LAW ERISA – the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 – is a federal law enacted to regulate employee benefit plans, including health insurance and pensions.

Many union benefits plans are administered under ERISA rather than state laws.

Because ERISA is a federal law, and DOMA forbids the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages, Boeing said it was not required to offer samesex couples equal benefits.

SPEEA is not so sure, Dugovich said.

“We’re consulting our attorneys,” Dugovich told SGN. “Discrimination is discrimination. At some point discrimination laws come into play.”

SPEEA secured medical benefits for same-sex domestic partners in 2000, Dugovich added, and those benefits will remain unchanged, but the union expected Boeing to accept the state’s new marriage law.

While SPEEA has been in negotiations with Boeing for many weeks, it is the marriage issue that has captured public interest, Dugovich told SGN. “There’s a whole litany of regular issues you go through [in a contract negotiation],”

OPPOSITION SOFTENING? Meanwhile, Boeing tried to walk back its flat refusal to pay survivor benefits. In response to an SGN inquiry, Boeing spokesperson Doug Alder said the company is “studying” the issue.

“Boeing has informed employees that the company is taking a closer look at R-74 and its impact on current policies and benefits once the law goes into effect in Washington State in December,” Alder wrote in an e-mail to SGN. “We’re studying how any change to our pension plan would impact our growing pension obligations, and we’ll continue to discuss it with SPEEA. “Boeing is a leader in the areas of diversity and inclusion, and was one of the first companies in the country to offer domestic partner benefits.”

While SPEEA’s bargaining updates continue to emphasize that the union is “doing everything possible to avoid the need for a work stoppage,” Dugovich said the negotiations have not been productive.

“We haven’t seen positive movement on any of our issues,” he told SGN. SPEEA members overwhelmingly voted down a Boeing contract offer on October 1.

On Monday, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) filed a lawsuit on behalf of the victims of reparative therapy. Representing four clients, and two of their mothers, SPLC slammed Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing (JONAH – formerly Jews Offering New Alternatives to Homosexuality); its director, Arthur Abba Goldberg; and life coach Alan Downing, with a historic complaint alleging consumer fraud.

SPLC’s lawsuit is based on JONAH and Downing’s “misguided and erroneous belief that that being Gay is a mental disorder – a position rejected by the American Psychiatric Association four decades ago.” The lawsuit says that some plaintiffs were instructed to “remove all clothing during both individual and group therapy sessions, including an instruction to Chaim Levin to hold his penis in front of defendant Downing.

A DANGEROUS FRAUD Such therapists mislead “patients,” deliberately misrepresent science, and play dangerous head games that can cause lasting mental scars. They engage in consumer fraud because they offer promises they can’t deliver, while delivering disasters they never promised. America’s youth deserve better than to be pawns in an ignoble effort to profit from the pain of hurting parents who are falsely led to believe these quacks are genuine experts.

As the author of Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth, I have seen the enormous destruction caused by reparative therapists.

As the founder of Truth Wins Out, one of the nation’s primary watchdogs of the “ex-Gay” industry, I have had to pick up the pieces of shattered families and littered lives.

This scam can’t end soon enough. While no one has ever truly transformed from Gay to straight, too many people have gone from whole to hurting, or from alive to dead. It’s time to end this ugly nightmare before more lives are destroyed.

You see, when you decide to marry, you are bonding with that person and their family for eternity in front of God and everyone. Because of this I have been able to connect with my husband in every way – physically, emotionally, mentally, and psychically. My husband is very special and is extremely sensitive and had a very different relationship with his mother. They were not close and at times there was violence.

The relationship your significant other has with their mother affects you, and if you come across this you must stop right away and get hold of a counselor. You will both need this for two reasons – to work out the issue of intimacy between the two of you, and to know how to handle feelings toward one another. Having gone through marriage counseling for a year we have been able to become closer than ever. Sharing every moment with my husband is a blessing and we are able to learn from one another’s experiences in life. And to me, so far, that has been the most important part.

A Russian hate group learns the hard way

Not many court opinions can be summarized in five words, but when it comes to a favorable ruling for Madonna after a rightwing group in Russia sued her for not hating Gay people, I think that about covers it.

If you aren’t familiar with the case, in August an anti-Gay, pro-Kremlin group calling itself the Trade Union of Russian Citizens sued Madonna for over $10 million for daring to speak in favor of Gay rights during a St. Petersburg concert.

Madonna and her band waved rainbow flags on stage and handed out pink bracelets, T-shirts, and rainbow banners reading “No Fear” to the crowd.

Now, if you know anything about Madonna you’ll notice that this sounds pretty tame. What’s the big deal? Is being pro-Gay illegal in St. Petersburg?

Why, yes, it is. At least since March when a law was passed banning “propaganda of sodomy, Lesbianism, Bisexualism, Transgenderism, and pedophilia to minors.” Now, waving rainbow flags is apparently hardcore Gay propaganda in this part of Russia.

And so a bunch of anti-Gay nuts sued.

And lost.

According to the Associated Press, during a court hearing the Trade Union of Russian Citizens “claimed that Madonna’s so-called ‘propaganda of perversion’ would negatively affect Russia’s birthrate and erode the nation’s defense capability by depriving the country of future soldiers.”

That’s right. One day you’re a young Russian man or woman at a Madonna concert, the next you’re renouncing procreative sex just to subvert the military.

And you kind of have to laugh when you get a load of some of the crazy testimony heard.

“Who will children grow up to be if they hear about the equal rights of the Lesbian lobby and manly love with traditional sexual relations?” one plaintiff testified. “The death rate prevails over the birth rate in the West – young guys are becoming genderneutral.”

Ah, yes, the children. Just who will these children learning about “manly love” from Madonna grow up to be? Androgynous and dead, I suppose.

The plaintiffs even submitted, as evidence, articles from Wikipedia “claiming that a real encyclopedia could not have articles about homosexuality,” according to the AP. You can’t even use Wikipedia as evidence in a freshman English paper, by the way.

“We aren’t against homosexual people, but we are against the propaganda of perversion among minors,” the plaintiffs’ testimony continued. “We want to defend the values of a traditional family, which are currently in crisis in this country. Madonna violated our laws and she should be punished.”

But it was not to be, as the judge called bullshit on it all and sent the Trade Union of Russian Citizens packing.

And this “We aren’t against homosexual people” stuff? That’s bullshit, too. Anyone who passes or supports laws that make support for LGBT equality illegal is definitely against people. And while this might seem like something far removed from the United States, we forget at our peril that there are plenty of folks who see anti-Gay laws like St. Petersburg’s a model for what should be happening right here. We’ve made a lot of progress, but there is still much work to be done. Don’t just stand there – let’s get to it. together, we can realize our historic opportunity to bring that fight to an end.

Today, we reflect on the strides we have taken toward overcoming HIV/AIDS, honor those who have made our progress possible, and keep in our thoughts all those who have known the devastating consequences of this illness. The road toward an AIDS-free generation is long, but as we mark this important observance let us also remember that if we move forward every day with the same passion, persistence, and drive that has brought us this far, we can reach our goal.

We can beat this disease. On World AIDS Day, in memory of those no longer with us and in solidarity with all who carry on the fight, let us pledge to make that vision a reality.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim December 1, 2012, as World AIDS Day. The stubborn stigma of HIV/AIDS Public misperceptions hamper prevention and treatment efforts

BLAMING THE VICTIM As of this year, 60 countries have adopted laws that specifically criminalize HIV transmission, with about 600 convictions reported.

According to a global review this year, more than 40% of UN member states (78 of 193 countries) criminalize same-sex relations, with some permitting imposition of the death penalty for convictions under such laws.

Most countries have laws deeming some

of their gender, sexual orientation, race, or background.

EXAMPLES OF EVERYDAY STIGMA Here are some common beliefs and behaviors to avoid, and to urge others to avoid: • Referring to asymptomatic HIV-positive people as “having AIDS.” • Presuming that because someone is HIV-positive, they’re sick, contagious, or dying.

Public attitudes about HIV and AIDS have changed dramatically since the first AIDS cases were reported 30 years ago. About 34 million people worldwide are infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and 25 million more have died from it. While there’s no vaccine, cocktails of powerful antiviral drugs called antiretroviral therapy (ART) can keep the virus suppressed and keep patients healthy. But no matter how long patients take ART, they are never cured.

That is where stigma enters the picture.

Stigma and discrimination are universally experienced by persons living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. The virus lurks in the body and comes back if the drugs are stopped. Scientists want to flush out these so-called reservoirs and find a way to kill the virus for good.

Stigma is perceived as a major limiting factor in primary and secondary HIV/AIDS prevention and care, and it interferes with voluntary testing and counseling, and with access to care and treatments.

Approximately one in five (19%) men who have sex with men (MSM) in 21 major U.S. cities is infected with HIV, and nearly half (44%) of those men are unaware of their infection, according to a new analysis from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In the study, young MSM and MSM of color were least likely to know their HIV status.

“This study’s message is clear – HIV exacts a devastating toll on men who have sex with men in America’s major cities, and yet far too many of those who are infected don’t know it,” said Kevin Fenton, M.D., director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention.

ATTITUDES CHANGE SLOWLY Public attitudes about HIV and AIDS have changed dramatically since the first AIDS cases were reported 30 years ago. But in many parts of the world, the stigma is still powerful.

AIDS-related stigma is not static. It changes over time as infection levels, knowledge of the disease and treatment availability vary.

The UN Joint Programme on HIV and AIDS launched the 2012 Global Epidemic Report on Tuesday and reported significant declines in new infections among adults and children, with high numbers of people placed on antiretrovirals.

Still the region most severely affected, sub-Saharan Africa has shown progress with about 1.8 million new HIV infections in 2011, compared with 2.4 million in 2001.

Between 2005 and 2011, the number of people dying from AIDS-related causes in sub-Saharan Africa declined by a third, from 1.8 million to 1.2 million.

However, while there have been victories in the treatment and prevention arena, fear, ignorance, and discrimination – including abusive treatment and violence – remain widespread in a number of countries.

In a recent survey, more than half of the people living with HIV in Zambia reported having been verbally abused as a result of their HIV status. One in five people living with HIV in Nigeria and Ethiopia reported feeling suicidal.

According to a nine-country study by the International Labor Organization and the Global Network of People Living with HIV, the percentage of people living with HIV who reported discriminatory attitudes among employers ranged from 8%in Estonia to 54% in Malaysia.

SPD offers crime prevention tips for winter

by Mark Solomon Special to the SGN The Seattle Police Department (SPD) has some tips on how residents can keep their homes and cars safe during the winter months. SPD Crime Prevention Coordinator Mark Solomon put this information out in a newsletter published in late October.

Here are his suggestions.

HOME SECURITY Lock your doors and windows any time you are away from your home. You’d be surprised how many burglars come through an open or unlocked door or window, even in the cool-weather months.

Be visible. Let people know that you and your neighbors pay attention and watch out for each other. You can do this in a very simple way: say hello. When you see your neighbors on your block, wave and say “Hi.” When you see people you don’t know on your block, wave and say “Hi.” This sends the message that you are engaged, that you are observant, and that you acknowledge the presence of those you see. As people who are looking to break into a car or a home don’t want to draw attention to themselves, letting them know that they’ve been seen and acknowledged will likely make them decide to go elsewhere.

Because it is getting dark earlier, many of us who work during the day arrive home

after dark. Having good lighting around the exterior of your home gives you good visibility of your home when you approach, and it gives your neighbors good visibility of your home so they can spot anything out of the norm during the time you are away.

Have porch lights on from dusk until dawn.

For the front or main entrance to your home, consider having the lights on a photocell sensor (when it gets dark, the light comes on, and when it becomes daylight again, the light goes off) or put the lights on a timer.

For the side and rear areas of your home, consider motion-sensor lights. Also, as some neighborhood streets do not have sufficient street lighting and are very dark, it is even more important to turn on porch lights from dusk until dawn so the street is better illuminated and you can better see what’s happening outside. For those who live in apartment buildings or condos, ensure that the landlord or property management company is aware of and repairs any inoperative lights.

Be wary of strangers at the door. We often have people going door-to-door asking for assistance, giving a story of running out of gas, of needing to catch a bus to [insert name of destination here], of a car broken down… all pleas to tug at the heartstrings to get you to give them money. These are often scams, not only to get your money, but to check to see if someone is home. Burglars often knock first to see if anyone answers the door. If there’s no answer, they may attempt to break in. Bottom line: if someone comes to the door, answer it. Let the person on the other side of the door know that someone is home. That doesn’t mean open the door. Talk to them through the door – don’t worry about appearing rude. This is

about your safety and deterring a crime, not about the other person’s feelings.

CAR PROWL PREVENTION Often a car is broken into because something is left in plain view – a briefcase, a computer bag, a GPS. The most effective way to prevent your vehicle from being broken into is to not leave anything of value visible in the car. To the maximum extent possible, do not leave anything of value in your car, not even in the trunk. Transporting items from point A to point B is one thing, but if you’ve just come from the store and have items of value in the car, don’t make a detour to walk in the park before taking those items home. If you make a stop at another store, don’t wait until you arrive at the second stop to then put the items you’ve purchased in the trunk – you’ve just advertised to those at that location that you’ve put a bunch of stuff in the trunk. Put items in the trunk when you get them, and then go to your next destination.

Think of car prowling as shopping. If you go to a store and find nothing on the shelves, you’ll go to another store until you find what you want. A car prowler shops at your car. If the prowler sees nothing there, chances are they will proceed to another car.

As stated above, an easy and effective deterrent is to let the prowler know they’ve been seen. If you see someone casing a car, say hello, wave, or let yourself be seen. Often this is enough to deter the prowler from continuing. Also call 911 to report the casing as soon as possible.

Winter weather awareness Safety tips for vehicle owners

by Shaun Knittel SGN Associate Editor People always talk about the weather. I think that’s because it’s an easy subject to talk about. Take today (November 14), for instance. As I was walking up Madison from 18th toward Capitol Hill I couldn’t help but think, “It’s not too cold today. And the sun is shining through the clouds.” Each bus stop I passed by along the early morning trek, I heard someone say almost those exact words: “Sun’s out.” “Not too cold.”

We talk about the weather because it is something that, stranger or lifelong friend, we all experience together. And when the weather gets tough (most recently Hurricane Sandy) we suffer, survive, and rebuild – together.

So now (you guessed it!) I’m going to talk about the weather some more.

The leaves have changed, and now they are falling. Winter has crept its way back into Seattle and as any experienced Pacific Northwest resident will tell you, “Here comes the rain again.” But this year, we might be singing a different tune. According to AccuWeather, a private weather company in State College, Philadelphia, a below-normal snowfall season is expected across the Northwest.

Seattle will get hit by “clipper systems,” which, according to AccuWeather, “typically are not the big snow producers.”

The low amount of snowfall will result in warmer-than-normal temperatures in these areas, experts say.

Well, as a self-described “weather expert,” I can tell you what you already know and that is you can’t predict the weather in this part of the country. Well, you can’t do it accurately, anyway. I predict cold temperatures, lots of rain, and a couple of really irritating snow days. Basically, business as usual.

Want to stay safe, keep warm, and not spend Christmas in the hospital because you failed to winterize your vehicle? Get a tune-up and be sure to check your battery.

Consider buying snow tires or tire chains, as your travel dictates. Chains work best on

glare ice, but be sure to check with local authorities on their use. Some locales prohibit them.

OTHER VEHICLE CARE TIPS: • Check radiator coolant and sturdiness of hoses and belts • Refer to the vehicle’s manual to see if lighter-grade oil is recommended for winter driving • Change burned out headlights, taillights, and turn signals • Check tire tread and wear – minimum tread is 1/16 inch for adequate traction • Make sure brakes are in proper working order • Keep spare windshield-washer fluid in the trunk and make sure the washer blades are in good working condition.

Also, prepare a winter emergency kit for your vehicle. Supplies should include: • At least two blankets or a sleeping bag • Flashlight or battery-powered lantern and extra batteries • Booster (jumper) cables • Emergency flares • Extra clothing – particularly boots, hats, and mittens • Steel shovel, and rope to use as a lifeline • Bottled water or juice and nonperishable high-energy foods (granola bars, raisins, nuts, peanut butter or cheese crackers) • First-aid kit and necessary medications • Sand or non-clumping cat litter for tire traction, in case your vehicle gets stuck in snow or ice • Cell phone and car charger WINTER-WISE DRIVING TIPS • Pay attention to weather reports on the radio. Allow time in your schedule for bad weather and/or traffic delays.

• Become familiar with your vehicle’s winter weather operating characteristics.

Front-wheel-drive vehicles generally handle better than rear-wheel vehicles on slippery roads because the weight of the engine is on the drive wheels, improving traction.

• Keep your windows clear of snow and ice. Remember to clean head, tail, and brake lights.

• If you need to turn on your wipers, turn on your headlights also.

• To prevent fuel line freeze-up, keep your gas tank at least half full. Fill your tank before parking your vehicle for long periods.

• Leave ample stopping time between you and the driver in front of you. Braking distance can be up to nine times greater on snowy, icy surfaces than on dry roads.

• If your vehicle is equipped with an antilock braking system (ABS), be sure to: STOMP – firmly depress the brake pedal; STAY on the brakes – do not pump them; and STEER where you want the vehicle to go.

• Gently pump non-ABS brakes to stop the vehicle. Take any corrective action gradually. You need to maintain full control of the vehicle. Refer to the vehicle operations manual for proper methods to correct skids.

• During winter travel, it is best to supply those at your destination with your cellphone number, departure time, travel route, and anticipated arrival time.

• Lock your vehicle, even in bad weather.

If locks freeze, heat the key. Do not pour hot water on a frozen lock – it will refreeze.

• Drive with extreme caution on bridges and overpasses during freezing temperatures. Because bridge temperatures can be 5-6 degrees colder than surface roadways, they can become slick and icy before other roads do.

• Stay with your vehicle while warming it up. An unattended, running car invites theft.

SURVIVAL TIPS IF STRANDED The best advice is to remain with your vehicle. If nothing else, you are guaranteed shelter. Other helpful tips include: • Tie a bright-colored cloth (handkerchief, towel, etc.) to the vehicle’s antenna, driver door handle, or outside mirror.

• Keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow.

Poisonous gases can filter into the vehicle if the pipe is clogged.

• Run the engine and heater no more than 10 minutes every hour, leaving a downwind window slightly open for ventilation while the engine is running.

• Light a flare or turn on a flashlight to let others know you’re stranded in the vehicle.

• Use floor mats, seat covers and blankets for added warmth. If you must leave your vehicle during a severe snowstorm or blizzard, secure a line of rope or cord to yourself and the vehicle to avoid becoming lost or disoriented.

• Keep bottled water in your emergency kit or vehicle. Never eat snow. It will chill you and lower your body temperature.

• Above all, remain calm. Your chances for rescue are better if you remain calm and in your vehicle.

I found this annoying. Yes, I do tend to reject cocktails that veer to the sweet side. But cripes! Can’t a guy order a drink without his husband making a federal case out of it?

I responded too personally, I’ll admit: “Since you shaved your entire chest and stomach last weekend without even informing me of the decision – and I do have a stake in the matter – I decided to drown my sorrows in the only kind of hairy navel I’ll

get to taste for the next month.”

“Are there no boundaries with you at all?” Dan inquired, not unreasonably.

“Look!” Billy suddenly declared. “No, look here!” Dave echoed. They each pulled up their matching rugby shirts to expose two of the hairiest navels I’ve seen in a long time.

“I’m a married man,” I protested, without much enthusiasm. And wouldn’t you know? When our server – clearly an aspiring actor, judging by his flawless physique – came over with our check, he asked, “Is

there anything more I can do for you?” and yanked up his tight black T-shirt to expose one of the finest hairy navels I have ever seen. What a narcissistic show-off. So hot.

City Hall will open the grand lobby at 11 a.m. on December 9. You are welcome to bring family and friends, your own cake, photographer – pretty much whatever you’d want at a wedding.

In addition to having your wedding planned by Mayor McGinn, many volunteers will be on hand as well. The city says it has received an outpouring of interest from caterers, photographers, artists, and others to help with the event. Skilled volunteers will be available to help with wardrobe emergencies. Volunteer witnesses will also be available, should you need them.

Local artists Jennifer Zeyl and Alicia Berger are working on creating four “tasteful” pop-up wedding chapels for the lobby.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE After you tie the knot at City Hall, head over to the Paramount Theatre (911 Pine St.) for a free wedding reception beginning at 6 p.m. Couples, families, and friends are all invited. While details are still being finalized, the Paramount is planning a celebratory champagne toast, cake, and desserts as well as entertainment.

Licenses will be available from the Recorder’s Office at the King County Administration Building (500 4th Ave.), starting at 12:01 a.m. on December 6. The office will be open from 12:01 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the 6th, from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the 7th, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the 8th.

Again, if you plan to marry at City Hall on the 9th, you must get the license on the 6th.
