Washington State Sen. Ed Murray (D-43) was elected Senate majority leader by his Democratic colleagues on November 13, succeeding retiring Sen. Lisa Brown (D-3). According to the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, Murray is the only openly Gay Senate majority leader in the country, as well as the highest-ranking Gay official in the state. He was previously chair of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, which is responsible for the state budget. Murray told SGN that the election was “by acclamation,” with liberal Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles (D-36) nominating him and conservative Sen. Steve Hobbs (D-44) seconding the nomination. see murray page 6
