by Mike Andrew SGN Staff Writer Campaign season always brings up the question of whether tenants can legally hang political signs in their windows, especially in neighborhoods like Capitol Hill where so many of the residents are renters. This is not just an abstract issue, as the recent controversy over an Approve Referendum 74 fundraiser at the Grenada Apartments on Belmont Avenue shows. Landlord Breier-Scheetz Properties attempted to prevent a couple from holding a fundraising party in their apartment, and backed off only when threatened with a lawsuit. Breier-Scheetz – which contributed $20,000 to defeat marriage equality – is now attempting to prevent its tenants from displaying Approve R-74 window signs. In spite of what landlords might say, such a prohibition is illegal under both the state constitution and ordinary state property law. see renters page 20

DADT repeal: one year later Cheryl Chow Repeal of ban on LGBT service has been an unmitigated success

honored by city Former Seattle councilmember recently came out as a Lesbian by James Whitely SGN Staff Writer

by Shaun Knittel SGN Associate Editor On September 20, 2011, the U.S. military’s ban on open service by Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Americans officially ended. “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” had finally died. On its way to the grave it took with it the careers of more than 14,000 brave

LGB men and women who had once served to protect and defend America’s freedoms at home and abroad. I think we can all agree that DADT had overstayed its welcome. By the time President Barack Obama signed the legislative repeal of the 1993 policy, in December 2010, a number of

credible polls had found that overwhelming support existed for a repeal of the discriminatory policy. The application of repeal was dependent upon certification by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the secretary of defense, and the president. Thankfully, Adm. Mike Mullen, see dadt page 8

Active-duty troops marched in uniform at San Diego’s 2012 Gay Pride parade. This is the first time that U.S. service members participated in such an event while in full uniform.

Last Monday was “Cheryl Chow Day” in the city of Seattle. On September 17, the former Seattle City Councilmember was honored by the city for her decades of public service. Chow came out as Lesbian last month, after being diagnosed with terminal central nervous system lymphoma. “Being honored by the Seattle City Council was a wonderful experience and great walk down memory lane! It’s hard to believe it’s been so many years,” Chow told SGN. “I am humbled by the attention I’m receiving and thankful for the opportunities and forums to keep spreading the message of hope, acceptance, and understanding to parents and kids.” “The intention [of the council proclamation] is to give honor and recognition to Cheryl Chow, not
