Murray wins fifth City Council endorsement

Legally married same-sex spouses have the right to participate in employee benefit plans even if they live in states that do not recognize their marriage, the U.S. Labor Department said in new instructions issued September 18. The new guidance means that Gay and Lesbian spouses enjoy the same federal rights as straight married couples when it comes to pensions, 401(k)s, health plans, and other similar benefits. The Labor Department administers employee benefits packages that fall under the scope of ERISA (the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974), and that includes most of the country’s largest private-sector employers. Other than in a few specific exceptions, ERISA supersedes state laws. The new guidelines are part of a series of administrative instructions in which the Obama administration is attempting to clarify the

Seattle’s first-ever summit conference on LGBT aging issues took place September 17, and was by all accounts a tremendous success. Jackson Holtz, an organizer for SEIU (Service Employees International Union) 775NW, which hosted the conference at its downtown headquarters, said he was see erisa page 16 “thrilled” by the capacity crowd of
