LGBT philanthropic community. As an organization that strives to inspire a culture of generosity, their influence is far-reaching, as they not only service Washington, but as far north as Alaska and as far east as Montana. The Pride Foundation envisions a world that honors diversity, fosters mutual respect, and celebrates complete equality. It takes a strong and dedicated leader to take the reins of such an organization. The Pride Foundation Board of Directors believes they have found that person in Kris Hermanns, and recently hired her as executive director.

by Shaun Knittel SGN Associate Editor Last week, the City of Seattle LGBT Commission won both praise and criticism for canceling a March 16 reception for a delegation of Gay Israeli leaders, citing Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. The snub caught the attention of national media resulting in a firestorm of negative press for the commission, and leaving many to wonder why the Seattle LGBT Commission took a side, either way, on the topic. The commission’s role is to effectively address and present the concerns of LGBT citizens of Seattle to the mayor, City Council, and all city departments. The commission recommends legislation, policy, programs, and budget items to the mayor. see israel page 16

Jay Inslee
by Mike Andrew SGN Staff Writer Seattle Gay News last talked with Democratic candidate for governor Jay Inslee in July 2011, only a day after he announced his support for marriage equality. A lot has happened since then. At the time, no one knew for certain that a marriage bill would be introduced in the legislature, that it would pass and be signed by the governor, or that it would be challenged in a statewide referendum campaign. When SGN reconnected with Inslee in his busy downtown campaign headquarters, he remarked on how much had changed in the intervening eight months. “It shows how fast people in the community are coming to accept each other,” Inslee said. “People couldn’t have had it on their radar that we’d move this fast. It’s been remarkable. Faster than anything in my lifetime.”
