The U.S. military’s top uniformed officer, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs Admiral Mike Mullen, said the armed services should lift the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) ban on openly Gay persons because “it’s the right thing to do.” “I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy that forces men and women to lie about who they are,” Mullen told the Senate Armed Services Committee on February 2. “For me, personally, it comes down to integrity.” Mullen spoke after Defense Secretary Robert Gates, the highestranking civilian leadership for the armed services (with the exception of President Obama, who acts as commander-in-chief), announced that the Pentagon will conduct a Pope Benedict XVI yearlong study of steps that would by Mike Andrew ing in parliament is sinful. be needed to lift its “Don’t Ask, In remarks to 35 Roman Catho- Don’t Tell” policy, which prohibSGN Staff Writer lic bishops visiting Rome from its Gay and Lesbians from serving Pope Benedict XVI touched England and Wales, the pope said openly in the U.S. armed forces. off an international controversy that Britain’s Equality Bill would when he declared to visiting British Catholic prelates on February 1 see pope page 20 see dadt page 16 that LGBT rights legislation pend-

The idea behind the retreat was to get all the LGBT activists together who were sick of delays, compromises and excuses and brainstorm ideas about the next step for LGBT civil rights and to figure out how to get more movement within the movement. Some who joined the session have been activists for many years and some were new to the movement. Joining the cadre of forward-thinking Gays was Stuart Wilber. Stuart is a short, senior Gay man who’s promised himself that he will make a difference while he can. Stuart smiles a lot and is a great listener. He speaks softly, yet pointedly, and has a lot to say. He is the perfect companion for coffee or to accompany you to a show. In other words, he’s an all-around okay kind of guy. What you may not know about Stuart is that he is full of fire and energy. If your conversation strays from theater and travel to politics, he lights up and Stuart Wilber begins to regale you with knowlby Shaun Knittel activists from around the country edge, experience and facts – he converged on the historic HighSGN Staff Writer lander Research and Educational see wilber page 18 In January, a group of 45 LGBT Center near Knoxville, Tennessee
