President Barack Obama is urging Congress to repeal the ban on Gays and Lesbians serving openly in the military. “This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies Gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are,” Obama said on January 27 during his State of the Union address. “It’s the right thing to do.” The statement drew a standing ovation from Congress and from Defense Secretary Robert Gates, as Obama became the second president to talk about Gays in a State of the Union address. Washington State Democrat Jim McDermott – who represents Seattle, Vashon Island, and parts of Burien and Tukwila – is also a cosponsor. The bill was referred to the House Education and Labor Committee, of which Polis is a member. Hearings on the measure have not yet been scheduled. “The Congress finds the following,” the bill states: “Public school students who are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Trans-
San Francisco, California Mayor Gavin Newsom became the latest Democratic official to take a distinctly public jab at President Obama for inaction on Gay rights. The 42-year-old California Democrat – who recently told New York Times reporter Maureen Dowd his political future was so fuzzy he could, in a couple of years, end San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom up “as the clerk of a wine store” – called by what he’s not done in terms of Obama’s slow movement on sup- rights of Gays and Lesbians.
