Millionaire arrested Gay intern called “hero” for role by FBI for threats to helping to save Rep. Giffords’ life Rep. Jim McDermott

University of Arizona junior Daniel Hernandez, 20, is credited with helping to save Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ (D-Ariz.) life as she lay gravely wounded after being shot in the head on January 8 in Tucson. Hernandez, a member of the City of Tucson Commission on LGBT Issues, is being hailed as a hero, and for good reason. When Jared Lee Loughner allegedly opened fire at Giffords’ “Congress On Your Corner” meet-and-greet at a Tucson Safeway, Hernandez ran toward the gunshots and toward his boss (Hernandez started working as an intern for Giffords just five days prior). Hernandez joins 61-year-old Patricia Maisch (who grabbed the gunman’s second magazine), and two men, Roger Sulzgeber and Joseph Zimudie (who tackled Loughner after he opened fire), as the four heroes of the violent day see giffords page 17
Secretary of Defense Gates plans quick DADT repeal
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has called on the armed forces to accelerate the pace of the looming repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT). On January 6, Secretary Gates outlined a multi-step plan, including regulatory and benefits reform, preparation of training materials, and then training itself. According to Gates, the U.S. military is “trying to get the first two phases of that process done as quickly as possible.” “The real challenge is providing training to 2.2 million people,” said Gates. “We will do that as expeditiously as we can.” When President Obama signed legislation authorizing the repeal of DADT, he said that the transition would take place “swiftly and efficiently.” Secretary Gates’ support for implementing repeal quickly is consistent with existing research, which finds that swift implementation is key to avoiding disruptions once a decision is made to repeal the Gay ban.
Seattle City Councilmember Sally Bagshaw stands alongside Ava Picasso, 6, and Livia Picasso, 4, before a vigil Thursday, January 13, at Westlake Plaza for the victims of the Tucson tragedy. The girls’ mother, Kelley Picasso, read a statement from the family of Dorwan Stoddard, her stepfather’s father and one of the six victims in Tucson.
