Canadian government may invalidate marriages of 5,000 foreign couples

A Canadian government attorney has indicated that Canada’s federal government does not recognize the marriages of foreign same-sex couples wed in Canada. Foreign couples reportedly account for about 5,000 of the 15,000

same-sex marriages performed in Canada since marriage equality took effect in 2005. Canadian Department of Justice lawyer Sean Gaudet stated what The Globe and Mail newspaper characterized as a “reversal of see canada page 18

by Shaun Knittel SGN Associate Editor When Washington Governor Christine Gregoire announced her support for marriage equality last week, the debate over whether or not there would be enough votes in the state Senate to pass a Gay marriage bill this legislative session began immediately. After all, openly Gay Senator Ed Murray has warned for some time now that although there were enough votes in the House, it was the state Senate where votes were falling short. It would seem that all that has changed and the pendulum is shifting. Seattle Gay News has learned that, just four days into the session, the Legislature is on the verge of having enough support to approve marriage equality. SGN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW King County Congressman Adam Smith Council votes for marriage equality Within 24 hours of Washington’s new congressional district boundaries being published in the press, Congressman Adam Smith was on the phone introducing himself to his new constituents. “I’m no shrinking violet,” he told SGN. “I want the people in my district to feel they’re being represented. You don’t have to agree with everyone, but you have to give people an opportunity to be heard.” Because Washington gained one congressional seat as a result of reapportionment following the 2010 census, all the state’s congressional districts were redrawn. Smith’s 9th District now includes Seattle south of Madison Street and east of I-5, as well as Mercer Island, Bellevue, Renton, Tukwila, SeaTac, Kent, Des Moines, Federal Way, and a piece of northern Tacoma. The new 9th District includes what used to be parts of Jim McDermott’s 7th District and Dave Reichert’s 8th District. “I’m excited about the new dis-
