Celebrating 41 Years!

boy, whose dance to Mercutio’s rascally music perfectly illustrated the charm of otherness and its challenge to authority.

In general, though, I found this dance to be more in the tradition of pantomime than the movement of dancers over the stage in patterns.

At times, in solo sections, it seemed entirely improvised. And though the audience could see that it was a dance about suffering, the narrative line was so obscure that instead of entering into the drama we were left outside with question marks over our heads. I know from his last creation, “Brahms and Tights,” that Wevers has a commanding choreographer inside him – that he can manipulate a company of dancers in the visually rich patterns and individual gestures that amplify the power of dance performance. This dance is a departure from that, exploring feelings more than the tools available to the choreographer – even in a small company like Whim W’Him. I hope that this cathartic dance has released the choreographer in Wevers to return to the intensity and complexity of group movement that he has displayed in the past. This somewhat private interlude seemed to me like a step backward, however necessary such steps are to the growing artist.

The three dances performed by Whim W’Him to conclude their 2016 season were focused on the bad things in life: betrayal, societal intolerance of difference, unrequited love and impossible love. In their usual laudable practice, Whim W’Him employed two rising choreographers, James Gregg and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, to make new works alongside work by Whim W’Him’s founding choreographer, Olivier Wevers. The first two dances on the program – Wever’s “A Disagreeable Tale of Duplicity” and Gregg’s “Into You I Go Willingly,” were narratives that made these difficult themes dramatically clear. But the third, Ochoa’s “Delicious Pesticides,” was a witty, delightful, and intriguing full-on exploration of dance as well as ideas.

At the post-performance Q & A, a young girl, in the innocence of childhood, asked Artistic Director Olivier Wevers which of the three dances was his favorite. The audience laughed, knowing that he would be in deep water if he expressed any preference, or if he responded with anything other than vast praise for everyone. We knew we were in good hands when the curtain rose on seven dancers hunched together, wiggling fingers elongated with floppy red extensions like creepy insects. They wore round red goggles that enhanced the alien look, though their weird little group pas de bouree –that yielded to simultaneous about-faces, backward bends, and regimented marches – suggested an army of ants. I loved the way Ochoa used a full range of complicated, simultaneous movement to establish a regimented form that suddenly flew off into chaotic individual actions, only to return suddenly to their military-insect movements. Light designs by Michael Mazzola were part of the fun, throwing down rectangles that the creepers would hasten to fill, only to find others they could not fill. It struck me as a metaphor for the endless variation that regimentation seeks – and fails – to contain.

This idea was emphasized in a favorite moment for the audience, when two characters departed from regimentation with a delightful interlude of seventies-style dancing, with the biggest guy wearing kinky boots of lipstick-red sequins. When the platoon of creatures falls back into formation, the big guy is literally out of line. We see his struggle to return to conformity, and at one point he is beaten into submission (which gave me an “uh-oh” moment) only to have him yell “Ow!” – in the whiney tone that signals indignation more than distress. It gave the audience a big laugh both of hilarity and of relief that the dance would not take a dark turn after luring us into a more relaxed state. After an ever-intensifying complexity of brilliant, fresh formations by this troupe of strange creatures, the dance ends with them falling over – on a final, hilarious “Ow!” from the refusenik. My dance buddy and I were equally awed by the endless invention of movement, coordination, and humor in this dance, that nevertheless reflects the evening’s theme of OUT-Spoken, and the problem of living as an “other” in a society that still insists on conformity.

I applaud director/choreographer Wevers, Whim W’Him and the loyal “wimmers” who support them, for bringing new choreographers to the stage, for forming a company of fantastic, powerful dancers, and for confronting the issues that most concern the LGBTQATS community and all people who have hearts, brains, and futures. It’s a pleasure to watch a company experiment and grow, and to see so many gifted artists launching into the public conversation of dance as meaningful, important expression.

yoncé, he’s hanging out with Taylor Swift, or interviewing Gwen Stefani for a Target promotion, or appearing as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race. The openly Gay entertainer, whose partner is from Seattle, got his breakthrough as a semi-finalist on the ninth season of American Idol, and while many of that’s shows contestants gradually fade away, Hall skyrocketed to fame by posting his own videos on YouTube, which led to much bigger and better things.

Of his many projects, one that is very dear to his heart is an original production called Straight Outta Oz, a show inspired

by The Wizard of Oz with a personal twist that includes powerful musical numbers, innovative sets, dazzling costumes, great choreography, and a strong social message. Hall and nearly two dozen cast members will perform Straight Outta Oz at the Pantages Theater in Tacoma on July 8, as part of the Tacoma Pride Festival.

I spoke with Hall by phone on a break between filming videos in L.A. - he has many of them uploaded on YouTube (channel: Todrick Hall), if you wish to check them out - and here’s what this multi-talented artist had to say.

Albert Rodriguez: You’re so busy and it’s hard to keep up with everything you’re doing. What are you working on right now?

Todrick Hall: Well, I am creating a visual album and it is going to feature most of the hits from the show and explain to people what we’re doing to twist it. We’ve already had Return to Oz, Journey Back to Oz, The Wiz, The Wizard of Oz, and there have been so many renditions of this classic story, so I think people are going to be really curious about what could be different with this show that they haven’t already seen. It’s an American classic and everyone is so familiar with the story, but I think we’re doing something very, very innovative with it.

Rodriguez: Are all the songs original in Straight Outta Oz? Hall: Yes. Rodriguez: This show is also about a powerful woman in your life, your mother. Was she always supportive from the very beginning of what you wanted to do?

Hall: There were parts of my career that my mom didn’t understand, but she knew that I wanted to dance, to sing, and to act, and that I was very different from all the other boys, especially in our family but also in our community. I’m one of 12 grandsons my grandfather had and I was the only one who didn’t play basketball or football, or hoped to be a professional athlete one day, so it was very odd for my family and my mom. In my community, and especially as an African-American boy, I was doing these things that were considered very feminine and girly types of extra-curricular activities. It was just really, really hard for her to go against the confidence of what she’d been taught and what her grandmother had been taught and what her great-grandmother had been

taught, and I didn’t understand that when I was growing up because people were always making fun of me, or asking questions, or wondering why I was doing that, or why my mom was letting me do it, or devoting so much time because my mom had to drive me two hours to ballet class every single day because there wasn’t a dance studio where we lived. She had to change her job in order to get me to where I needed to be every day and make so many sacrifices that I took for granted when I was younger.

Rodriguez: Is the rest of the family supportive as well?

Hall: They always were supportive, but I mean, my mom is just so proud and she cries with every little thing I do. We come from a very poor family in a really small town. Some of the things we have gotten to do were things that were just unrealistic, like we would have never thought maybe it could happen to us.

The idea of seeing Beyoncé live was a preposterous concept, let alone being able to work with her and choreograph for her and know her on a first-name basis.

I would have never thought I’d be flying places in Taylor Swift’s private jet and hanging out with all these celebrities, like Ariana Grande. It’s just such a blessing and every day I wake up and am grateful for these opportunities and I appreciate my family so much for the sacrifices they made to get me here.

Rodriguez: Were you the only boy in your ballet class?

Hall: Yes, I was the only Black person and the only boy through my whole life growing up taking dance classes. It was very odd, it was very difficult, but luckily I had people shielding the negative things that I later found out were happening. We had people stop subscribing to the ballet company I was in because of the roles I got, like The Nutcracker and different ballet productions we produced every year, but luckily I had a dance teacher who fought for what was right and against everyone’s advice on who she thought was most talented and appropriate for the role.

It was just a weird place to grow up, an African-American boy who wanted to do ballet; in some ways, it’s like the African-American Billy Elliot because it had a lot of parallels.

Rodriguez: Is the show an emotional rollercoaster? Happy, sad, inspiring?

Hall: Yeah, it is definitely an emotion-

My mom and I were not on great terms for about six months a year ago, and it was a real tough time for both of us and my mom left voicemails every single day and I kept all of those voicemails, and I used those for inspiration to write songs for this album. Anybody who knows my mom, it definitely hits home because they’re specifically catered for her. And those are the songs I’m proud of, honestly. They’re really touching to anybody who has a relationship with their mother, or their child.

Rodriguez: Your partner is from Seattle, so will you be hanging out at some of the local spots, or on Capitol Hill while you’re here?

Hall: I’ll probably be spending time with his family because I’m really close with his dad and brothers, and it’s really just fun to hang out. Honestly, being in L.A. and shooting so many videos I don’t get the opportunity to do that very often, so I’m really excited about the chance to just chill out. I got to see the ballet this year, The Nutcracker, in Seattle and it was beautiful, so maybe we’ll go watch a show or something, but that’s kind of my idea of fun.

Rodriguez: When you do get a break, what do you like to do? Read, go shopping?

Hall: I love, love, love going to Broadway musicals. I love to be entertained with live performances, some song and dance; there’s nothing like it.

Rodriguez: You’ve worked with a lot of big talent, from Beyoncé to Taylor Swift. Is there anyone you haven’t worked with that you would like to someday?

Hall: I would love to work with Brandy. She’s been a huge inspiration to me my entire life. I watched her when she was Cinderella growing up; that was one of my favorite movies. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched it because you might hang up the phone on me because I was that much of a huge fan of hers, so I would love to work with her. But I also love Nicole Richie; I would love to work with her, too. Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Justin Timberlake, and I love Rascal Flatts and Hunter Hayes, and a lot of country singers. I have so many people I’d love to work with.

Rodriguez: Do you have Beyoncé on speed dial?

Hall: Oh my god, I wish!

Rodriguez: At the show you’re per-

forming in Tacoma, will you be doing anything else, like some impromptu dancing at the end or a Q&A session?

Hall: There won’t be any Q&A, but I think we might be doing an encore performance of some of the numbers that everyone has shared so many times that have been vital on my YouTube channel.

I want to give the audience an opportunity to dance and have fun at the end of the concert, but I think a lot of my followers have never seen a musical before. For me, to take this platform and introduce kids to something that changed my life - musical theater, which got me out of such a miserable place; I don’t know where I’d be if I hadn’t found that at such a young age. I definitely wouldn’t be the same person as I would be talking on the phone with you today. So, I would love to give people that experience, to come to a concert and sit back and enjoy a story about a journey of a character.

Rodriguez: June is Pride Month. What does Pride mean to you?

Hall: Pride to me is being confident with who you are and happy in your own skin and being able to do exactly what you want to do with confidence and not apologizing for who you are. I hope this doesn’t sound bad, but one day there will not need to be a Gay Pride because it will not be a big deal. People will just grow up Gay and it will be a part of who they are and it will not define who they are, and so while I love Gay Pride and I’m always involved with different Gay Prides around the world, it almost saddens me that we have to encourage [LGBT people] to be proud of who they are.

Rodriguez: What advice do you have for anyone who hasn’t come out yet?

Hall: My advice to somebody would be to do it when you’re ready; take your time. But always know that anyone who pushes you away, because of you being honest about who you are, wasn’t worth having in your life to begin with, and you should surround yourself with people who will love you, care for you, and be there for you, whether you’re Gay, straight, whatever it is. You need to be around people who will love you unconditionally.

Rodriguez: For anyone wanting to become a dancer, should they take classes?

And what if they can’t afford them?

Hall: Well, this is my thing. I was very poor and I got a scholarship for a number of reasons. But there are tutorials on YouTube and I know dancers who have literally watched those to learn how to dance. People who own dance studios are artists who don’t usually operate in the way regular business people do, so go to those people and show them you really want it, and if you really want it there is somebody in their town or city who is willing to accommodate. And learn how to teach yourself; I taught myself how to dance watching Disney parades. I would sit there, teach myself the choreography, and work on it every day and fine-tune it.

Everybody has the same 24 hours in a day and it’s what you choose to do in your 24 hours that gets you to your final goal, or doesn’t. Every single person on the planet should try their hardest to do what makes them happy every single day.

Playwright Bill Cain is also a Jesuit priest. This combination of background allows his compassion for everyone to be written into the complex stories that he presents on stage. The real life story about a young man with a probable personality disorder who is accused of raping and killing a 14-year-old Afghan girl and her family prompted the writing of 9 Circles.

Strawberry Theatre Workshop is presenting a taut and exciting production starring Conner Neddersen as Pfc. Daniel Edward Reeves. Reeves echoes the circumstances of Pvt. Steven Green (convicted in 2009) in real life. Neddersen gives the role everything he’s got, which is considerable. His character is tense, he is wary, he absorbs everything fed to him and feeds it back appropriately. It’s a brilliant portrayal in a whip-smart play.

The story unfolds carefully in small bits of information as Pfc. Reeves is interrogated or interviewed for his trial by lawyers, counselors, and Army personnel.

We learn that this young man was completely unsuited for Army life, but that recruiters, under immense pressure from their higher-ups to fill quotas, gloss over or waive qualifiers in order to allow this dangerous, mentally unstable boy to enter the Army.

At first Reeves is honorably discharged for having a personality disorder, but afterward he is charged with murder. It seems that the Army wants to have its cake and eat it, too.

It’s clear that Cain accuses the military and the political establishment feeding a war machine of fostering the danger that this young soldier posed to an Afghan family. He walks the audience into the system that could create such a situation while helping us understand how a young man could end up justifying such a horrif-

ic act.

It’s not “fun” to watch or become a part of this play, but it’s vital. It’s fascinating.

It’s necessary to understand “our” part, if we as Americans have to choose how to support the various undeclared wars our country is involved in. Strawshop’s choice, director Greg Carter’s choice, is a masterful one that fulfills what theater can mean to society.

The play is performed without an intermission and is about 105 minutes long, so be aware that it’s a bit of a stretch. I think that Cain’s last few minutes of script is not only completely unnecessary, but also takes the audience off the hook, which is a shame. But up to the last five minutes, it is everything a play about this topic should be. (In essence, Cain tells us whether what we’ve seen is true or not, and I think the ambiguity is much more powerful.)

Neddersen is joined by a trio of strong

actors: Norah Elges, Sam Hagen and Sylvester Kamara. The staging is simple with lighting by Reed Nakayama being a key element.

Especially in light of attacks like Orlando’s, where ideology mixes with mental instability, we should be paying attention to understanding the complex melding of such ideas. Through honest exploration, solutions can be advocated for more completely. Kudos to Strawshop for picking this great play.

Thalia’s Umbrella’s presents excellent production of Sorry

Well, Thalia’s Umbrella is giving you a welcome break with a wonderful script, Sorry,

by Richard Nelson that presents a quad of middle-aged siblings dealing with their elderly uncle.

The three sisters, Barbara, Marian, and Jane Apple (Jeanne Paulsen, Macall Gordon, and Leslie Law) and brother Richard (Terry Edward Moore) have a difficult decision to put into effect. They have decided it’s time to move their beloved uncle Benjamin (William Hall, Jr.) into a facility, because it has become too much for Barbara to manage caring for him by herself.

Directed by Daniel Wilson, the actors are at once “normal” and accessible and human. They tease, revisit family history, discuss (Democratic) politics, and tell secrets that they’re not supposed to (“but it’s family!”). Paulsen’s Barbara dithers back and forth about finally moving Uncle out because her character is so clearly desperate

for him to remember! Her yearning makes you want to leap up from your seat and go put your arm around her for comfort.

Benjamin was an actor and Hall gets a moment in the play to read a poem, as an entry into the facility’s “talent show” that shows how brilliant an actor he was. It’s also a moment to revel in Hall’s wonderful acting, as well. The contrast between that moment and the rest of the play demonstrates Hall’s range in a subtle way. He’s a master actor, and not seen as much as I’d like, besides occasional opportunities at Taproot and Thalia’s Umbrella.

Gordon and Law provide warm and humorous support, while Moore gets to display his unconscious privilege. There’s a very funny moment when his sisters ask him about a very female aspect and he starts to answer, as they knew he would, while they dissolve into gales of laughter.

Sure, dementia and the challenges it presents is not necessarily an enticing topic. Plays such as The Other Place, recently presented at Seattle Public, and The Father, newly Tony-awarded on Broadway, are beginning to present the issue more prominently on stage. Those plays use the first person position, the person losing his or her grasp of memory, to demonstrate what it might feel like. This play focuses on the family dealing with the issue and many of us have had to and will have to stand up to those challenges.

But aside from that, it’s a joy to see these veteran actors get to play together. While it might not entice younger audience members that much, it might be fun for them to see adults relating and reliving their family history. Peaches Christ, a longtime expert on the intersection of horror and bitchery, has wanted to pay tribute to Baby Jane ever since she first began her Midnight Mass movie series in San Francisco nearly 20 years ago. But it wasn’t until she met RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 6 champion and superstar comedian Bianca Del Rio that she knew she’d found her perfect Baby Jane.

“It’s one of my favorite movies ever,” Del Rio says. “There’s no modern equivalent of two actresses who hate each other as much as these two did. Everybody is too P.C. now, trying to be happy and pleasant and not offend anyone. Back then it was really good and dirty. Bette and Joan were brilliant women with amazing careers and balls.”

Baby Bianca is a former child star who wants to revive the show she made popular as a little girl, when her hit song “I’ve Written a Letter to Draggy” dominated the vaudeville circuit – but her drag sister Peaches proves to be a burden on wheels.

“Peaches said, ‘I’m going to sit in a wheelchair and let you do all the work pushing me around,’” Del Rio recounts.

“I said, ‘I see a theme here. You do Grey Gardens with Jinkx Monsoon and just sit in a bed, and now I’m pushing you around the stage, you lazy bitch!’”

The storyline (at least in the newly revised version) is set in 1853 with the California Gold Rush at the plot’s center. The gold calls to people of all sorts: an unscrupulous entrepreneur who owns a slave, an Irish man with a family back home, a pair of Chinese brothers, a young boy and his father…to all head out West, all with the hopes of making their fortu,ne. Former slave owner Ben Rumson is a surly, burly fur trapper enjoying his solitude for over a year when he encounters a chance meeting with Armando, a Mexican trader. Rumson is a loner but agrees to becoming business partners with Armando. Rumson believes that men should be treated equally...for the most part. In town the two men find a “wife for sale” and Rumson ends up buying Cayla, more out of pity for her situation than anything emotional. Armando, who always wanted to be an architect, builds a house for

all three of them are living together. Cayla forges Rumson’s signature on a letter to his estranged 18-year-old daughter Jennifer, a proper young woman attending school in Georgia, inviting the girl to visit. After Jennifer arrives and discovers the truth, she settles in and soon Armando and Jennifer have a romance. With racial tension evolving in town, Rumson must decide what kind of man he is, where his prejudices lie, and if he can overcome them for the happiness of his daughter.

There are four main characters in this production; two definite leads, Rumson and Cayla, and two strong supportive roles, Armando and Jennifer. While other characters are pivotal to this newly rewritten plot, these four are clearly the noticeable performances. Justin Gregory Lopez plays Armando. Lopez makes his 5th Avenue debut showing us he has talent. His voice is strong and quite smooth, especially during the haunting duet, “I Talk to Trees” with

Ms. deLohr Helland is – thankfully – becoming a staple in the 5th Avenue’s stable of local talents. Her voice is always strong and she never fails to beautifully handle the lyrics she is asked to sing.

Broadway actress Kendra Kassebaum plays Cayla, Rumson’s newly bought wife.

Ms. Kassebaum does an excellent job.

Her voice is strong and pure and when she wraps her vocals around romantic comedic songs like “In Between,” her talents truly show off. Ms. Kassebaum’s expressions are wonderful and with those large doe eyes, it is easy to read her on stage – she is having a good time doing something she excels at, and that is an honest performance. The main star – without doubt – is Ben Rumson who is played by Broadway star Robert Cuccioli. Mr. Cuccioli’s voice is deep and easily resonates throughout the theatre.

His stage presence is instantly noted and seems perfectly fit for the role of loner Ben Rumson. His vocals make us feel the longing in such songs as “Wand’rin’ Star” or the show’s biggest number “They Call the Wind Maria.”

There are several members of the ensemble that do excellent work as well. In fact there isn’t anyone that seems to be miscast or badly represented. Broadway actor Louis Hobson plays the businessman Jake with a good amount of sneer in his voice.

The Chinese brothers (played by Steven Eng and Mikko Juan) both do well in their roles representing one that wants to keep to the honored tradition, while his brother would like to become more acclimated with his surroundings. Rodney Hicks (playing H. Ford – a free man of color) is one who

knows how to take a smaller role and make it much more noticeable and enjoyable. The entire cast – whether in featured roles or ensemble – does an excellent job with the songs and dances in this production.

So what has been re-envisioned and rewritten? That’s hard to say exactly. My only knowledge of the musical’s plot is the several synopses I’ve read online, and even those differ. I think it’s safe to say that most of the racial subplots (which drive a good portion of the show) were added at this time. The song presentation list is in a very different order than either of its previous incarnations, with many of the songs now being sung by different characters than originally presented. Even the big, breakaway hit from the show, “They Call The Wind Maria,” has been changed from a haunting ballad into an up-tempo swing-sounding number.

That’s not to say that it doesn’t work well. It does. The new racial subtext plays within the parameters of the musical, and very few instances pushed the boundaries of cliché. The script does touch on several prejudices: a slave vs. a free black man, the Chinese brother’s attempts at assimilation to the resistance of others, the poverty of the Irish, Mormon polygamy, and even a subtle reference to the American colonialism of Mexican lands in California. But somehow it works together, and since it is a musical, it can push the boundaries of plausibility just a tad.

The setting of the stage needs to be mentioned. Jason Sherwood (credited Scenic Designer) did an excellent job of staying within the theme and not getting too carried away with kitsch. The set is laced with hanging ropes to represent the trees.

The backdrops look like painted canvases, showing a much larger-than-life sun/moon to add a Western mood to the entire production.

Following the success of Brigadoon in 1947, Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s Paint Your Wagon opened on Broadway in late 1951 and ran for 289 performances lasting under a year. The show less than thrilled the critics, but the score was definitely noticed. A decade later the film version was released starring Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood. Several new songs were added to the film written by Alan Jay Lerner and Andre Previn. Paint Your Wagon helped pave the way for Lerner and Loewe to continue on with a long line of hits including My Fair Lady, Camelot, and Gigi.
