Random thoughts regarding the 93rd annual Academy Award nominations Mank – Photo courtesy of Netflix
by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN Staff Writer Roughly two months later than normal, the nominations for the 93rd annual Academy Awards were announced Monday morning, March 15, having been delayed courtesy of COVID-19. With the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences extending the release deadline for 2020 films to February 28 of this year, 366 titles were eligible for Best Picture consideration.
This is a titanic number, one made all the more incredible considering that theaters around the globe were closed for the majority of last year. It also shows how a few other tweaks the Academy made in regards to eligibility — most notably suspending one requiring a theatrical release for all featurelength contenders for 2020 — were hugely significant in allowing a broad variety of pictures to remain in Oscar contention that otherwise would have been disqualified.
