For the first time since 2004, Seattle Men’s Chorus and Seattle Women’s Chorus will debut a new vocal ensemble. The Supertonics will share their tight-harmony a cappella sound for the very first time this December while sharing the stage with SMC. “Jingle All the Way” is a joyful celebration that brings together beloved carols, fresh takes on holiday classics, and showstopping dazzlers. Featuring “Silver Bells,” “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “Jingle Bell Rock” and many more moments of pure holiday joy. Artistic Director Paul Caldwell confirms, “There will be bells, bells and more bells!” The Supertonics is directed by Nikki Blackmer. They will serve as musical

ambassadors for the choruses, perform at community events, and connect with other LGBTQ organizations and nonprofits.

For close to four decades SMC has presented their unique blend of song, dance,

and campy comedy to the Northwest; they have solidified their role as Seattle’s biggest holiday extravaganza. As in years past, SMC will also present concerts in Tacoma and Everett.

The two Tacoma concerts will be held Saturday, December 8 at 3pm and 7:30pm at the Rialto Theater (310 S 9th St., Tacoma). Tacoma concert tickets are $35$55 and are available through the Tacoma Arts Live box office at (253) 591-5894 or at tacomaartslive.org.

The six Seattle concerts will be held Sunday, December 9 at 7:30pm (this concert includes certified ASL interpretation); Sunday, December 16 at 8pm; Thursday, December 20 at 7:30pm; Friday, December 21 at 7:30pm; and Saturday, December 23 at 2pm and 7:30pm at Benaroya Hall (S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium) (3rd Ave. between University St. and Union St., downtown Seattle). Macy’s Holiday Parade & Macy’s Holiday Star Lighting. Nov. 23, 9am10am. Come kick off the holiday season with the 28th Annual My Macy’s Holiday Parade. This year’s parade will feature 25 inflatable floats, local middle and high school marching bands, nearly 650 costumed characters, professional sports teams and community drill teams. At the conclusion of the parade, Santa will dash in on his reindeer-led sleigh and head directly to his holiday post at Santaland® on the third floor at Macy’s Downtown Seattle. Visiting hours will begin at 11am.

The Holiday Parade route begins at 7th Ave. and Pine St., then travels west down Pine St. to 5th Ave., south on 5th Ave. to University St., west on University to 4th Ave., and finally north on 4th Ave. to Macy’s front doorstep.

Psst… be sure to come back later in the day for the lighting of the Macy’s Holiday Star, which celebrates its diamond anniversary! The famous 161-foot high, 3,600-bulb Holiday Star has shined brightly throughout Seattle’s downtown for 61 years. The Macy’s Star Lighting happens in conjunction with the annual lighting of Westlake Center’s tree and The Downtown Seattle Association’s Carousel at Westlake Park beginning at 5pm and will include a fireworks display (weather permitting).

32nd Annual Great Figgy Pudding Street Corner Caroling Competition.

Dec. 7, 6-8:30pm. On and around Pine St. between 3rd Ave and 7th Ave and at Westlake Park. The biggest single musical holiday event of the season and a critical fundraiser for the Pike Market Senior Center & Clinic & Food Bank, The Great Figgy Pudding Caroling Competition kicks off the month of December with a singular evening of entertainment enjoyed by nearly 10,000 spectators every year. 1,000 carolers and dozens of caroling teams sing their hearts out on the downtown Seattle street corners of Pine St. and 5th Ave and 6th Ave beginning at 6:15pm.

The top caroling teams compete for the most donations raised in the Figlanthropy category. The categories of Best Choral performances and Most Creative teams are selected by the Famous Figgy Judges; the People’s Choice team is selected by popular vote. The top two teams in each of these categories compete in a sing-off on the Figgy Main Stage.

Keynote speaker Steven Wakefield, or “Wakefield” as he prefers to be called, is an HIV-negative health care advocate with over thirty years of involvement in projects that increase community participation in HIV prevention research and ethics.

Wakefield has participated in the global search for an HIV vaccine as the External Relations Director for Fred Hutch’s HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN). He also founded The Legacy Project, HVTN’s program to increase racial and ethnic population involvement in trials. Wakefield also serves on the Pride Foundation Board of Directors and on the AVAC: Global HIV Prevention Board.

At this event we will celebrate Seattle’s ongoing leadership in the fight against HIV and AIDS, and share how our organizations are investing in emerging needs and trends throughout King County. Seattle is the first city in the world to reach the World Health Association’s 90-90-90 goal, where 90 percent of residents infected with HIV know their status, 90 percent of those living with HIV are on HIV antiretroviral treatment, and 90 percent of those on treatment are virally suppressed. Funds will benefit three of Seattle’s leading providers of prevention, care and support to individuals living with and at risk for HIV/AIDS: Gay City: Seattle’s LGBTQ Center, Seattle Counseling Service, and CareTeams of Samaritan Center of Puget Sound.

HAM FOR THE HOLIDAYS: Remembering the immortal Peggy Platt

by Lisa Koch Special to the SGN I miss Peggy Platt. Mary Margaret “Peggy” Platt. My brilliant friend, my infuriating sister, my hilarious writing partner, my Dos Fallopia twin, my “Ham for the Holidays” marathon partner. She left us April 3, 2018, and I have not found my center since. We were a comedy duo for 28 years, that’s probably some kind of record.

I’m still getting used to not being able to call her up and say, “Okay, how about this for a sketch idea?” Her loss is huge, to me, to all of us. She was truly one of a kind.

I first met Peggy in 1989. We were both cast in Alice B. Theatre’s “The Holiday Survival Game Show”, and I thought she was insanely funny. That was the start of our connection. We kept getting cast in shows, and started creating characters backstage in green rooms. In 1990, Peggy was commissioned by Bumbershoot to write a comedy piece, and she called all her friends to be a part of the merriment. She asked me to write a song for a lesbian folk duo, and I came up with “Sister Song”. We named our characters Compost Morningdew and Dolphin-Free Tuna Womon, and Dos Fallopia was born. We called ourselves “twin sisters of different cul-de-sacs”. We toured the country, did a ton of women’s festivals, comedy festivals, Pride festivals.

We did shows at the Cabaret de Paris and kept inventing characters like the Spudds, the Colonel and Shenille, the Dweeb Girls, the Matrons of Blues.

When Alice B. folded in 1995, we knew there would be a big gaping hole from the loss of the Game Show, so we came up with “Ham for the Holidays”. I became our producer, Peggy made all our props and styled our wigs, and we crossed our fingers that we might break even. Our first 1996 “Ham” was at Theatre Off Jackson (which would remain our home until 2012). The cast was me, Peg, Sandra Singler and Mark Rabe on piano. The show was a hit, and the next year we came back with “Son of Ham for the Holidays”. We followed that with “Bride of Ham for the Holidays”. And we just kept going. We’d take a year off now and again, but we always came back to “Ham.” It became a tradition for our loyal Seattle audience, and for all us cast and crew.

Andrew Tasakos was a troupe member for several years, as an actor/writer. Kevin Kent joined us in 1997. Chris Jeffries, Bruce Hall and DJ Gommels were our kickass musical directors, pianists and actors over the years. Michael Oaks played every weird character we ever wrote for him, and was an integral team member. Directors were Kit Harris, Burton Curtis, Sandra Singler, Valerie Curtis-Newton and more – but brother David Koch helmed the most “Hams” (10).

We cranked out 17 “Hams” over the years.

We spent our final 5 years at ACT Theatre, and the crowds just kept coming. Crazy.

Writing with Peggy was my greatest joy, and we laughed that wheezing-honkingsqueaking-crying kind of laughter when we came up with something weird or hei-

nous. Performing with Peggy was intense, so much fun, and never, ever boring. Peg often went up on her lines, and so we would improvise, God help us. And our audience loved being in on the train wreck. Peggy was truly brilliant, and was so loved by this city.

Pegster, we had a great run. I will forever miss Mama Spudd (“Oh, my heart is so full…”), and Toby (“I sing bass because I’m a bear…GRRRR!”) and Shenille and Vision and Dot and Vi and Dolphin-Free Tuna Womon and Margaret and Spike and Nicky and Fran and Dale and Moishe and Archie and all the rest of our quirky little family. You were one in a million, Sister.

I started my theatre career in Seattle as a stage manager. Peggy was sincere, honest, funny, and yes, sometimes stubborn. But damn it, when there were butts in those seats, magic happened. The audience had the ability to laugh. Standing on stage with Peg, and not laughing was not always the easiest thing to do. It was an honor and a pleasure.
