by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer HALL AND OATS PUYALLUP FAIR September 14 A day at the Washington State Fair (in Puyallup) on an overcast Saturday (September 14) was filled with livestock, agriculture, craft and hobby exhibits – all essential to any visit to the fair. The addition of BBQ from the Pete’s BBQ truck was a nice plus. One other draw is the outdoor concerts of music groups that are the soundtrack to my teens.

Accompanied by the Tierney Sutton Band rhythm section, the night will be filled with solos and duets arranged in fresh ways, featuring the two singer’s dazzling musicality and connection to the brilliant lyrics of their songs. The evening will also feature songs from movies they have sung in: Tierney, from Clint Eastwood’s recent movie Sully and Ann from Robert DeNiro’s The Good Shepherd and Queen Latifah’s Last Holiday. From Gershwin, Porter and Mercer to Mancini, The Bergmans and Sondheim, get ready for an evening of sensational cinematic delights!

I chatted with Callaway by email: MK Scott: What do you like most about Seattle?

Ann Hampton Callaway: I love the people there. Smart, warm, arts loving people who tend to live life thoughtfully. Great restaurants, theater, music, art- speaks to my senses. It’s a gorgeous city, too. I love walking around and discovering new places. This time I will be spending a few days before on Bainbridge Island – such a tranquil lovely place. I think the Pacific Northwest is very inspiring. Plus great coffee at every turn!

MK: Tell us about your show with Tierney Sutton, “In Technicolor.” Is that what they are calling it?

AHC: We call it “In Technicolor.” We just premiered it in San Francisco and the audience went wild! Tierney and I have known each other for years and loved each other’s talents so when we were both coming out with CDs focusing on music from

interest just increased thereafter, from John Oates classic dark curly hair with mustache to Daryl Hall’s all-American good looks.

Looking back at their videos, they ranged from the group performing with occasionally funny expressions coming from John while trying to get into the view of the camera, to really funny and innovative videos with “Family Man” and “Out of Touch”.

With no opening act, a montage appeared on screen with a history of all of their Top 40 hits. Suddenly Oates, 71, appeared with his guitar and Hall, 72 positioned himself at the keyboard and started off with “Maneater”, then “Out of Touch”, “Adult Education” and “Method of Modern Love”.

as well as the audience while he continued playing their hits – and there were many: “Say It Isn’t So”, “She’s Gone”, “Sara Smile” and “One on One”.

Even Oates took a lead part by starting the classic Righteous Brothers cover, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’”.

A light shower came and went but nothing could dampen the excitement of “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)”.

After a brief absence from the stage the band came out to perform “Rich Girl” and “Kiss on My List”.

By the time “Private Eyes” started, the audience was all prepared for the rhythm of its classic “Private eyes” (clap, clap) “are watching you” (clap, clap).

“You Make My Dreams” was a great way to end the show.

I am quick to point out that the group’s sax player, Charles DeChant, made quite the impression by getting close to the audience from the edge of the stage despite the light shower.

Noteworthy was the omission of “Family Man”, the one song I mentioned that had a great video in 1982, and an incredible guitar solo by occasional collaborator, GW Smith.

But then again, without Smith, it would probably have “dampened” the evening.

movies, I asked her if we could put a show together – so glad she said yes. My CD “Jazz Goes to the Movies” focuses on mostly songs from the 30’s and 40’s when songwriters were creating masterpieces that would become The Great American Songbook. Like the time we are living in, it was a time of strife and these songs uplifted people through the depression and war and can uplift us today. Tierney’s gorgeous CD “Screenplay” focuses more on contemporary film music and her arrangements are simply brilliant – she and her band breathe new life into their songs as I tried to do with mine. So it’s a beautiful night of solos and duets as well as witty and playful banter.

We have different approaches to singing that seem to compliment each other very well and people seem to enjoy the love we all share on the bandstand – I’ve had the pleasure of working with her musicians for years and, like Tierney, they are phenomenal onstage and off.

MK: I have been a fan ever since the Broadway musical, Swing. I had the soundtrack and loved everything about the show. What was your experience like?

AHC: Thanks! It was a dream come true. The producers were looking for an “Ann Hampton Callaway type” for 6 months and finally they thought, maybe we should actually approach Ann Hampton Callaway!

I had wanted to be on Broadway since I was a child and saw Company and when I quit college and moved to NY, I had hoped to eventually land a Broadway role. I didn’t realize it would take 21 years to become an overnight sensation! Not only did I get to star in the show with a superb cast, I got to choose my songs, co-arrange them, write specialty material for the show and create a role that would feature many of my gifts

and particular passions for the music. It was a joy to see how audiences were swept away by the irresistible dancing and soaring songs of the swing era-they would often sing and dance out of the theater!

MK: You have even composed and worked with some of the greats like Barbra, Patti Lupone, Liza and my good pal, Michael Feinstein. What memory stands out for you working with those legends?

AHC: I love great talent and when I’ve gotten to hear these artists sing my songs or perform with them or for them, it’s a high like nothing else. Every time I hear Barbra sing one of my songs that are featured on 7 of her CDs it’s a pinch me moment. Patti was the first to sing “At the Same Time” for an AIDS TV special and I was so moved by her passion for the song and the cause. Liza has been one of my most important friends and mentors in the business. We met in 1991 and her encouragement and example inspire me to this day. Michael and I have performed numerous times together and written together and I hope one day we record something together. He is such a great champion of the music I love and he astounds me with his energy for all the musical avenues he pursues – there’s nothing he can’t do!

MK: Last week was the 18th anniversary of 9/11 and you composed two songs that marked that period: “I Believe in America” and “Let Us Be United.” How will you remember that time?

AHC: My life and all our lives are forever changed by that time of unspeakable violence and loss. But our lives are also changed by all the beautiful acts of kindness and courage as we did our best to unite and stay strong in the presence of a new kind of threat. We have to live with this

threat every day. I am a spiritual person and am always trying to be a vessel of love and hope for these challenging times. Music is an incredibly healing thing and it heals both the listener and the creator.

MK: What is next for you?

AHC: I am touring all over the place [check out www.annhamptoncallaway. com.] I’m also in the beginning stages of two recording projects – a record of early Broadway masterpieces with my friend and producer Lisa Schiff and a double CD of original songs with my friend and producer Marty Ashby. Not sure how the time table will unfold but I’m enjoying writing songs with and for brilliant friends and choosing Broadway classics to put my spin on.

MK: What makes “Swing” music still so timeless?

AHC: There is, at the heart of the music, a sense of joy and freedom that to me is our essential nature. It puts a smile in people’s hearts and is impossible not to move to. Like the human heartbeat, it creates a rhythm that is so compelling that you forget your troubles and get drawn into the playful world of sound and story. What’s not to love?

same sort of massively extensive library as Scarecrow Video (now a nonprofit boasting the world’s largest cinematic inventory of more than 130,000 films) our little shop still managed to hold its own. I made it a point to bring in as many timeless classics, independent curiosities and international titles as our budget would allow, and as such we generated a sizeable following of dedicated renters who helped us make sure we remained financially afloat.

What does this have to do with vaunted indie horror auteur Larry Fessenden and his latest bag of grisly, character-driven tricks Depraved? During the early 2000s two of my go-to off the beaten path genre offerings I’d constantly recommend to people looking for something unsettlingly different were the filmmaker’s grungy 1995 vampire shocker Habit and his austere 2001 minimalistic monster flick Wendigo.

While not for all tastes, I usually knew just exactly who to suggest these creepy cult favorites to, and more often than not renters would return each film excitedly wanting to discuss their favorite scenes and moments.

“Oh, my God,” exclaims an excited Fessenden. “That’s fantastic. It’s so great to hear and I really appreciate it. I’m so sentimental about video stores. It used to be where I would go if I had writer’s block or just wanted to get out of the house. I’d go to King’s Video in New York City and just wander the aisles and drink in the whole history of cinema without having to spend a dime.”

I was chatting with the filmmaker over the phone about Depraved, his marvelous 21st century take Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein story. In this version of the tale, Adam (Alex Breaux) wakes up with no memory of who he is, why his body is covered in several strange, gruesome scars or where it is he’s currently living. Turns out, he’s in a secluded New York City loft, and he is there with doctor, scientist and former Army medic Henry (David Call). The doctor has been treating Adam, and in a few short months he teaches his patient how to speak, helps him regain his strength and slowly nurses him to something reasonably close to full health. This treatment is funded by wealthy pharmaceutical businessman Polidori (Joshua Leonard), a selfish egotist and libertine who treats Adam more as a piece of property than he does a flesh and blood human being.

The reason our video store conversation mattered was in large part because home video is a big reason Fessenden currently has the career he does now. Films like Habit and Wendigo, while given minor theatrical releases, truly found their audiences thanks in large part to being readily available for rental at those stores. “Video stores were such a great thing to have in your local neighborhood,” muses the filmmaker.

“They really helped make my career. My films didn’t necessarily get the wide theatrical release or all of the attention that they maybe deserved. Yet they grew, especially in the case of Habit, these large cult followings because people found them at their various local video stores.

“I eventually got a good indie distributor, Fox Lorber, and Habit just seemed to make it out there. It was in Blockbuster. It was in the local mom and pop store. It was everywhere, and that was fun, which is funny because I hated the cover. I didn’t know why they put me on the cover instead of the girl, the vampire lady. But in the end, now I’m very fond of it [the cover] because it’s just my big-ass face all smeared green. People would rent that movie in large part because of my green big-ass face. How can you not love that?

“In the future, the kids that ended up working with me and becoming my comrades? It’s all because they had picked up those videos in Maryland when they were literally high schoolers. It’s a great legacy.”

Fessenden pauses for a moment before continuing. “You’ll not discover my films now in the streaming environment,” he states winsomely. “You have to really look

for them, and I think that’s unfortunate.

We’ve lost something for sure.”

Not that the filmmaker’s works aren’t available on Blu-ray. Four of his most popular films, No Telling, Habit, Wendigo and The Last Winter, got their own four-disc collection chockfull of special features from Shout! Factory’s genre label Scream! Factory in 2015. “I made that happen,” he laughs proudly. “Over the years, I got it so that IFC owned all my films. I then took them to Shout! Factory and said, don’t you think that I should have a box set? The funny thing is that now IFC works with Shout! Factory on all their releases. So I, kind of inadvertently, but also kind of intentionally, set up a relationship that’s worked for both companies.

“To be honest, I was determined to sell Depraved to IFC. I went through sort of a very circuitous route so this could potentially happen, but eventually they bought it. So now all my movies are still under one roof and maybe, just maybe, I’ll have another box set collection sometime in the near future.”

As for Depraved, it’s no secret this is a project Fessenden has been intermittently been working on for over 15 years. “I found a one-page summary of the movie on the computer from December 2, 2003,” he says nonchalantly. “I think that’s how far back it goes, which doesn’t mean I tried every day for the next 16 years to get the film made. I didn’t. But I did work on it on and off. I had a lot of distractions, and that’s one of my problems, but it was always a story I was interested in seeing get made.

“I think one of the primary problems I was having was that I was trying to cast it like a more significant film with a movie star. That it would be interesting to see a star in a lower budget, down-and-dirty modern Frankenstein story. Had I gone that route it also would have led to more significant financing. But it never worked out.

“So, after about ten years, I decided to make the film with the people I was currently working with. I’ve been producing very low-budget movies and getting a lot of careers underway, and I had a great crew of talented, dedicated artisans available to me. I just said to them all, guys, let’s do my movie now because I can’t wait any longer for the industry to pay me some attention.”

I can hear his grin through the phone as he makes that last statement, a hearty mischievous chuckle escaping his lips.

This makes it clear just how much making this film meant to Fessenden. Even more importantly, it also hammers home just how essential it is he finds Mary Shelley’s source material and just how timeless a story he believes her Frankenstein to be.

“It’s one of the great pieces of literature,” he proclaims emphatically. “We missed the 200th anniversary by a year. I

mean, technically I made it during the anniversary, and that’s maybe even more poignant. But in any case, I do sort of wish I had made Depraved a year prior so it would have been released on that anniversary. You can’t have everything, I guess.

“It’s funny. A lot of people now realize that Frankenstein was written by a young woman, but because of that anniversary a number of people now know more about the origin story. It really is amazing, especially in the #MeToo years to think about the insight Shelley had in writing her book and the condescension she had to deal with from the people who published and read it. Everybody thought her fantastic husband had written it.

To disprove them and prove she wrote it herself she came up with the cover story that she came up with the tale in a dream because no one would believe that a woman would be able to just have this incredible flight of imagination. It would have to have been like sort of handed to her from the heavens or something.

In some ways all of that is such a great origin to this fantastic story, a story that can now never be taken away from Mary Shelley. It’s hers, and it always will be.”

For his take on the material, Fessenden felt the key to making the story work for the modern age was to tell things almost entirely from the creature’s point of view.

Adam is the central figure of the tale and it is via his eyes that viewers obtain a full understanding of the world he has awoken in and the people, primarily Henry (his creator) and Polidori (his financier), whom he ends up interacting with. “I wanted to tell the story from the monster’s point of view because we always see him as an ‘other,’” explains the director. “Even if he’s sympathetic all the way back to Karloff, and you can see that he’s in agony and feels alone, you still see him as a monster and as a strange aberration. I thought, what would it be like to wake up and be the monster?

“We can all relate to feeling like an outsider. I would say that almost every kid growing up they feel like they’re being bullied or misunderstood, and that’s becoming more and more acute in the conversations we’re having nowadays with identity politics and all that goes along with that. I wanted to explore that along with the bewilderment of life, which I think is something we all feel, and would be acute if you just woke up in full adult body and didn’t know what had brought you here. On top of that then you are haunted by these memories of a life you don’t remember ever actually living. How terrifying would that be?”

One of the primary changes to Shelley’s story deals with how Henry and Polidori end up with Adam’s brain. Unlike a diseased or damaged brain, their creature gets a healthy one courtesy of a young, unwilling donor.

“It’s so traumatic, isn’t it?” asks Fessenden.

“It’s so profound. So sad. I love the moment where this young kid played by Owen Campbell says, ‘I’m just going to leave, but don’t worry. We’ve got tomorrow.’ And it’s the story about maybe you don’t have tomorrow and how terrifying that is.

“That’s one of the things that draws me to horror, this kind of gentle reminder to the viewer that you don’t know what’s in store and life is very precious. It’s really a movie about that. He goes out only to wake up in this bewildering place, which just so happens to be the body of the creature, Adam.

He can’t figure out who he is but he knows he loved this other person, he’s just not initially sure who that person was or if she even existed in the first place. Was she just some on he made up? Was she a fantasy? He doesn’t know, mainly because he doesn’t know who he is himself. It’s all fragmented, but he’s determined to figure that out.

“Then the tragedy of being the monster happens. Through a series of events he ends up killing [someone], and in that moment he becomes a monster. He can never go back. He can never join society. He’s become corrupted by Henry and Polidori, been corrupted because of so many of the circumstances that surround him. It’s such an important part of Mary Shelley’s story, and seeing that happen through the eyes of the creature, experiencing it from his point of view, that was vital.”

By shifting the focus as he does, this allows Fessenden to play a little more with the Dr. Frankenstein character, in this instance Henry, with a bit more playfully complicated ingenuity than is typically the case with most adaptations of Shelley’s source material. “I feel that you slowly see that Henry is somewhat unhinged and incapable of providing a nurturing environment,” proclaims the filmmaker. “He’s filled with his own anger. Even in the pingpong game, you see him snap and [Adam] gets an understanding of aggression and what that looks like. This slowly creeps into his consciousness.

“Maybe this will be too subtle for some tastes. But this was always my idea. I wanted to show the little tiny psychological shocks that shape us and make us feel damaged and confused. I wanted to show why it’s often so hard to come out okay. By telling the story through the creature’s eyes I could then play with Henry’s motivations and character a bit more creatively than I could have had I structured things from his point of view. Henry is the father figure here, and sometimes the lesson we learn from our father figures isn’t always a good one.”

These subtly shifting cracks in the human condition, these small emotional fissures that send people down complex paths where wrong looks right and attempting to do good can inadvertently lead to a more

insidiously poisonous evil, these have been constants throughout Fessenden’s entire career. From Habit to Wendigo to The Last Winter to even his prior feature, 2013’s misbegotten giant man-eating fish creature feature Beneath, these thoughts have always been something the writer/director has consistently marinated upon. “I love that word,” he says with a touch of a mischievous whimsy. “Marinate. And I agree.

These are themes that interest me.

“I love these great old stories. I’m sitting in my little home office and I’m looking at pictures of Frankenstein and Wolf Man and the Creature. I love these aesthetically, these creatures that sort of represent something. But it is what is underneath that I find so fascinating. They’re all stories about our damaged nature and the psychological problems that we bring to our lives. If you see that as scary, then you understand them.

These creatures are us.

“I always say I make sad horror movies. I’m sort of aware of the melancholy of life: what’s precious, what is fleeting and how susceptible we are to corruption and despair. All those things.”

As we sit and chat I’m reminded about the flood of emotions I had while reading Mallory O’Meara’s superb The Lady from the Black Lagoon and how much of what Fessenden is talking about mirrors many of the themes that are explored in the author’s biography of Milicent Patrick. She was the celebrated original designer of The Creature, the humanoid sea monster who lusts after Creature of the Black Lagoon actress Julie Adams.

But her mark on history was erased, Universal’s makeup department head Bud Westmore taking credit for Milicent’s designs while making sure she never worked as an artist for a Hollywood studio ever again.

“It’s such a fascinating story,” says Fessenden. “Thank goodness for the book because it’s such a cherished story for those of us who love horror, that The Creature was designed by a woman. But also it’s such a sad story of the patriarchy just being everything that people hate about it. That Bud Westmore couldn’t handle the fact that he had this wonderful and talented woman working for him. He could have spun this story and said, ‘I mentored this woman.’

But instead he had to crush her. It’s really perplexing how people in power are so depraved, if I could use the word.”

Which brings the conversation back to the filmmaker’s movie. Henry and Polidori are the people in power. Not only do they end up working to crush Adam from living up to his potential, they also end up at one another’s throats, each trying to show superiority over

continued from cover former Army medic takes care of him. He teaches Adam how to eat, how to walk, how to dress and how to talk. He schools him in literature and math. Henry even teaches him how to play ping-pong, a game he begins to love even though he’s initially not very good at it. For Adam, all of this is good. It feels right. Residing in a secluded industrial neighborhood of New York in a sprawling loft apartment, for this inquisitive young man it’s hard to imagine life could get any better.

But not all is as it seems. Adam has jagged, grotesque scars all over his body, almost as if he were pieced back together body part by body part after some horrific dismemberment, Henry strangely cryptic when the pair talk about anything relating to his friend’s physical appearance. Additionally, there is the doctor’s acquaintance and financial benefactor Polidori (Joshua Leonard). He’s peculiarly ecstatic where it comes to Adam, the hyperactive, effusively self-indulgent and wealthy businessman acting like he’s Henry’s boss while also treating his patient as if he were his personal property and not a flesh and blood human being.

A heartfelt, deftly mature 21st-century reimagining of author Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, indie auteur Larry Fessenden’s Depraved is a movingly emotional monster movie that packs a pretty mean punch. It is a return to form for the Habit, Wendigo and The Last Winter filmmaker,

the other. “They crush Adam,” explains Fessenden, “and in the process bring about all of the horror to come via their actions. But it’s more than that. Clearly, Polidori can’t stand that Henry’s smart enough to have made this monster, and so he wants to constantly remind Henry that he should get some of the credit.

“I think I’m just interested in damaged psychologies that lead to terrible things. Like in Habit, it’s the fact that the guy is obviously grieving and he can’t seem to put his finger on why, so he starts insisting that this woman is a vampire to all his friends. They just walk away because they can’t deal with somebody being that vulnerable. With Wendigo, no one wants to listen to the kid. They refuse to believe he knows what he’s talking about. That he’s afraid for valid reasons.

“And maybe that’s what this movie is about, too. I don’t make extreme movies.

This isn’t A Boy’s Life, where you have the father bullying the kid and you go, that father’s bullying the kid and it’s despicable.

It’s much more subtle than that, because I think that’s where you see that these shocks are still happening, where you’re forced to look at them even in a much more so-called normal world. The world’s despicability is often very subtle.”

All of which has oftentimes placed Fessenden ahead of the societal curve. No Telling and Habit are insightful looks at masculine insecurity and rage, both films made decades before the term ‘toxic masculinity’ entered the everyday lexicon. The Last Winter is an examination of the effects of climate change upon the world but features a collection of characters working for an oil company who, even though many of them are scientists, refuse to believe the sci-

entific facts in front of them until it’s much too late. “I always used to joke that I make feminist films,” laughs the filmmaker. “But what does that mean coming from an old white guy? I’m not sure it means anything.

“But I have always seen the plight of animals and Nature and these unappreciated, deeply-overlooked structural elements in society that are taken for granted by the patriarchy, all of which I feel suffers from their taking everything for granted and destroying the world. It creates rage. It creates horror.

“I’m not blind. I’m a white guy and by and large I’ve lived a privileged life. But I have a sensitivity for whatever reason to these injustices and that’s really what my films are about. I like the marginalized people.

His evolving father-son relationship with Henry gives way to an understanding that the scientist and doctor doesn’t necessarily have his patient’s best interests at heart. This makes the vile insensitive narcissism displayed by Polidori all the more reprehensible, his toying with this creature’s blossoming emotions a key factor in the terrible carnage that will affect all three men by the time their collective stories reach their tragic conclusions.

Fessenden’s affinity for Shelley’s source material is obvious. There’s this great little opening prologue that initially seems inconsequential, a pair of fresh-faced young adults having a late-night conversation about their romantic future, their mumbling banter having a vulnerably silly eloquence that’s oddly charming. But as Adam begins to come into his own it quickly becomes apparent this interplay between two side characters, one of whom is never seen (in the flesh, at least) again, is far more essential than it first appeared it was going to be. Henry’s creature is haunted by a loss he can’t put words to in order to describe, and even as he learns what it means to have relationships and what it is to make new friends, there’s still a hole sitting at the center of his soul that he begins to suspect can never be healed.

This makes Adam’s journey towards becoming a being capable of unimaginable destruction so much more bleakly gutwrenching than it otherwise would have been. It also makes him more of a fully

formed human than either of the other two men in his life prove to be. Henry and Polidori, no matter what their individual goals might be, are the true monsters. While each appears to be working towards the greater good, in the end it is their own self-aggrandizement that motivates their actions.

Even the battlefield PTSD Henry suffers from due to not being able to save all of the wounded soldiers who fell under his care pales when compared to his egotistical brio as he self-assesses his medical and scientific abilities. Worse, while he treats Adam as a son, showering him with affection while urging on his physical and mental growth, the doctor is just as willing to liquidate his creation if his existence might at some point become troublesome.

I think one of the more interesting aspects of the film is that during Adam’s trips into the public eye, while many do look at him and his numerous scars a bit sideways, most don’t treat him as a freak or as someone to be feared. If anything, many of the people he encounters go out of their way to be nice to him, trying to get a greater understanding of his situation as they attempt to get a better understanding of what might be going on with him.

It is the influence of Henry and especially Polidori that leads Adam to inadvertently do the unthinkable, and it is when he accidentally treats kindness and empathy with inadvertent violence and bloodshed that the foundation for the climactic carnage is unintentionally poured.

Like almost all of Fessenden’s works, even the unctuously forgettable man-eating

fish thriller Beneath, this one puts a greater emphasis on character and emotion than it does on cheap thrills or eye-popping visuals. This does not mean the director still can’t stage a stunning set piece or offer up a few dizzyingly hypnotic sequences (just watch pretty much all of Wendigo or the frigid last third of The Last Winter for proof of that). For this film the director works with his pair of cinematographers James Siewert and Chris Skotchdopole to a achieve a clinical, documentary-like approach that fits things nicely only for the story to become claustrophobically ephemeral during the film’s stormy climactic act.

This makes for a suitably unnerving transformation that both mirrors Adam’s interior mental journey while it also pays deft homage to Shelley’s original novel, Fessenden finally diving head-first into the inherent terror of the tale with a brutal ferocity that’s close to incredible.

Not everything works, and other than a beguilingly quirky (albeit brief) performance by magnetic young actress Addison Timlin (whose character I will not talk about as to not spoil the surprise) most of the female characters are given frustratingly short shrift. But overall Fessenden has composed a mesmerizing little riff on the Frankenstein myth, and over 200 years after its first publication Depraved makes it clear there’s still plenty of electrifying life in Shelley’s classic tale, life audiences will likely keep thrilling to for untold generations to come.

So you think you know what is going to happen?

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer PEOPLE OF THE BOOK ACT THEATRE Through September 29 The Greek myth of the relationship between Jason (of the Argonauts) and Medea, a king’s daughter, is one that can be seen to be a devil’s bargain. Medea bargains to help Jason in his quests if he marries her and takes her away with him. But while Medea is a great help to Jason, she also turns out to have uncanny and murderous tendencies and a lot of people end up dead.

An audience member of Yussef El Guindi’s world premiere play, now playing at ACT Theatre, should keep that myth firmly in mind as they watch the story of newlycelebrated author Jason (Quinlan Corbett) who has published a memoir about being a soldier in Iraq and saving and then marrying an Iraqi woman, Madeeha (Monika Jolly).

El Guindi appears to have a passion for ambiguity. Not many aspects of life are straight-forwardly one way or another in his plays. Characters often have mixed motives or “want” multiple things, sometimes desiring things that clash with one another. Many of his plays include his unique perspective as an Arab-American, having spent a lot of time both in EuropeanU.S. environments and his family’s home in Egypt. El Guindi also loves to make an audience decide they know something about a character only to pull the rug out from under them with a later reveal.

His plays mix subtle and not-so-subtle elements that address the anti-Muslim phobias and bigotries wafting through much of our society. This particular play includes a PTSD-inspired nightmare of a soldier (Jason) who is forced to confess how much he wants to kill and destroy the Iraqis he was sent to fight after 9/11.

possible movie deal in hand and is hosted and stays with old high school friends, married couple Amir (Wasim No’mani) and Lynn (Sydney Andrews). It’s not a great reunion because Amir and Lynn never thought he was that great a writer, and they themselves are creatives, so there’s competitive tension. And also, Amir tells Lynn of Jason’s great crush on her in high school, which makes Lynn feel awkward.

Almost as soon as they are alone together, Jason tells Lynn he still has great feelings for her. Unaccountably, she seems to want to touch the hot stove of forbidden attraction, knowing Jason is newly married, and she is supposed to be content in her own marriage.

When Madeeha arrives in her new coun-

try, Jason’s distaste for her becomes clear, though the reasons are hard to fathom.

Madeeha seems to be doing everything she can to be a good wife to him. But is it because she’s aware of his growing fame and fortune or because she cares?

Amir begins to have suspicions about Jason’s memoir and how real the tale is. As an Arah-American, suddenly Lynn and Jason seem to call his patriotism into question, perhaps because he does not agree with buying into the gung-ho U.S. imperialism displayed in Jason’s book and popular movies.

Much of the 100-minute play is so easy to anticipate that it plays too much to stereotypes. Maybe that is to lull the audience into thinking the play has no surprises. But

the character of Madeeha is far too complex for that, and is ready to shake up every assumption you make.

Jolly is the clear star of the play once you arrive at the final moments. As Madeeha discovers Jason’s attraction to Lynn and her marriage is on the line, she reveals much more of what she is capable of and shows Jason what his future will look like.

“This is why I love Get Out, because I always wanted to make a horror movie about what it feels like to be Black. What would it feel like at all times to feel that you have a target on your back in this society?

And it’s only gotten worse since Trumpy Trump. So much worse. But as an old white guy I also knew I wasn’t the one to tell that story. So I love what [Jordan Peele’s] did with that movie. It’s incredible.”

Fessenden pauses for a moment as if in deep thought before he continues. “I really feel that’s always been my mission,” he states with elegiac authority. “I want to

continued from cover Jennifer Lopez, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, Trace Lysette, the criminally underrated Julia Stiles and Oscar-winner Mercedes Ruehl (not to mention popular recording artists Cardi B and Lizzo), and based on journalist Jessica Pressler’s New York magazine article “The Hustlers at Scores,” I can’t say my interest in getting a look at the movie certainly wasn’t piqued. I have also enjoyed a couple of writer/ director Lorene Scafaria’s previous efforts, notably Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and The Meddler, so while I never thought this comedy-drama about New York strippers scamming Wall Street bankers was going to be amazing, I just as readily hoped it would be an entertaining, well-acted and amusing good time at the theatre.

While that latter thought was proven to be true, I was wrong about the first half of that statement. Hustlers isn’t just amazing, it is one of 2019 best films. This exhilarating motion picture is a fast-paced drama about a collection of women taking charge of their situation after the 2008 banking crisis leaves them all on the brink of financial devastation. It is a rousing, emotionally-moving story of female empowerment, friendship, family and sexual liberation that defies expectation and overflows in character-driven surprises, refusing to judge its protagonists for their choices while at the same time still holding them accountable for their various missteps.

Destiny (Wu) is a young woman working at upscale New York strip club Scores.

It is 2007, and she’s doing whatever she can think of to keep a roof over her grandmother’s head. She is taken under the wing of veteran dancer Ramona (Lopez), quickly learning all of the best ways to milk Wall Street bankers out of thousands of dollars a night while also getting a new best friend in the process. Soon Destiny knows all the tricks of the trade, paying off her grandmother’s house while also earning enough to afford a downtown apartment for herself, getting a taste for the finer things in life (like designer clothes, shoes and handbags) in the process.

Fast-forward a couple years. The financial and housing crisis of 2008 has taken its toll.

Destiny, no longer a stripper and now with a 2-year-old child, is barely getting by. Returning to Scores she discovers it is a completely different place, most of the familiar faces all gone and the majority of the girls now Russian immigrants willing to turn tricks for cash in the camera-less champagne rooms.

Running into Ramona by chance, the former friends quickly fall back into one another’s arms, their familial bond soon stronger than it ever was before. In fact, she’s got a new way to make money, one that takes advantage of those Wall Street bankers who helped financially devastate the country, none of whom would ever admit they’ve been bilked by a cadre of dancers working at a strip club. But as Destiny diligently strives to ensure their venture won’t catch the eye of authorities, Ramona keeps wanting to take these men for more and more money, and in doing so opens up her and her gaggle of entrepreneurial girls to the type of legal danger that could land each and every one of them in jail.

Hustlers is basically a female-driven The Big Short as told through the eyes of working class everywomen who are belittled, spat upon, ridiculed and forgotten about in large part thanks to how they’ve chosen to make their living. Scafaria takes

please people, sure, but I also want to say to them, wake up! Look under the surface.

Look how aggressive and violent our society is. It’s just so anti-life, it lacks tenderness and nuance. We literally have to talk about things like this with monster stories because it’s too delicate a topic.

“That’s my thing with identity politics.

We should have that conversation, but it shouldn’t just be about standing up for your little tribe. It’s for what is decent, and if it is about being decent then you can lift all people together, including the knuckledraggers who support this jackass in the White House. You can bring them along, too, if they are willing to rise to the occasion and be decent.” this true story, fictionalizes a few bits and pieces of it, grounds it in an authentic, hardscrabble milieu and makes sure to put the evolving friendship of Destiny and Ramona right at the center of the maelstrom. The ups, the downs, the various in-betweens, all of that is here. Their love for one another is palpable, as is their mutual regret when things fall apart. The pain they feel is deeply profound. While some of their wants and needs are clearly superficial, the majority are anything but, each woman selflessly doing whatever they can to do what’s best for their respective families.

Lopez has never been better. As great as she was in Out of Sight, as solid as she’s been in stock Hollywood programmers as varied as Anaconda or Maid in Manhattan or in riskier ventures like The Cell or El Cantante, and as strong as her work in NBC’s “Shades of Blue” was, the actress is nothing short of stellar as Ramona. From her dynamic, eye-popping movie star introduction set to Fiona Apple’s “Criminal,” to a rooftop moment of comfort luxuriating inside a massive fur coat with Wu, to a heartbreaking tear of understanding and anger outside a police precinct on the streets of New York, Lopez is extraordinary. She mines emotional territories that are stirring in their furious indignant naturalism, and the way Ramona fearlessly attempts to rise above the fray and make the world a better place for her own daughter is decidedly personal. But the actress never sugarcoats any of her character’s actions, and as understandable as many of her choices might be that doesn’t mean she doesn’t still deserve to be held accountable for her more heinous and unconscionable actions.

The rest of the cast is equally strong.

Even though it’s a small role it’s wonderful to see Ruehl back on the screen. Same goes for Stiles. As the reporter trying to tell this story for the women, she shares several subtly multifaceted scenes with Wu that are far more integral to the overall narrative than initially meets the eye. Palmer and Reinhart are both delightful as the two women who first join Ramona in her scheme to scam those Wall Street doofuses, and while neither Cardi B or Lizzo have major roles both singers make the most of their few scenes, each doing so with a gonzo comedic brio that brought a smile to my face. As for Crazy Rich Asians star Wu, she’s virtually unrecognizable as Destiny, the young actress showcasing that she’s a hugely talented star on the rise I’m going to be talking rapturously about for decades to come.

I loved Scafaria’s Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. I wholeheartedly enjoyed The Meddler. Her script for Nick & Nora’s Infinite Playlist is wonderful. None of that prepared me for what it is she accomplishes with Hustlers. This is a movie that goes for broke right from the jump, it’s feminine gaze directed oftentimes within as it celebrates these friendships, cherishing the familial bonds the women end up creating even as society turns a blind eye towards their collective travails. They are warriors, each making the most of the hand they’ve been dealt. They do not whimper. They do not whine. While they do shed a few tears that doesn’t mean they are fragile or need some man to come and save them from the world’s destructively inhuman ills. Scafaria is their champion, and her movie is their celebration, and I can’t wait for audiences all over the world to get the chance to see that for themselves.
