Celebrating 45 Years!

Even the dark overcast sky couldn’t dampen the night with Cheap Trick taking the stage as they celebrated their 45th anniversary with hits like “Hello There”, “You Got It Going On”, “Big Eyes”, “California Man”, and “If You Want My Love”.

Lead singer, Robin Zander, 66, all dressed in white, still had the pipes and remained flawless.

The Fats Domino cover “Ain’t That a Shame”, followed by “I’m Waiting for the Man” and the iconic “Heaven Tonight”

were an equal blend of classic and hard rock melodies.

Cheap Trick ended with “I Want You to Want Me”, “Dream Police” and the final song, “Surrender” included surprise appearances by Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready and Matt Cameron.

I was slightly disappointed that they omitted their biggest hits, 1987’s “The Flame” and the Elvis cover “Don’t be Cruel”.

My fiancee’ was also disappointed they left out “Born to Raise Hell” from the 1983 cult classic animated feature, Rock & Rule and “Reach Out” from 1981’s Heavy Metal.

Overall, Cheap Trick was a great way to start rocking the night away before ZZ Top took the stage.

By sundown, ZZ Top came out to celebrate their 50th anniversary and performed “Got Me Under Pressure”, “I Thank You”, “Waitin’ for the Bus”, “Jesus Just Left Chicago” and one of their biggest hits, “Gimme All Your Lovin’”.

Then, unfortunately, it began to pour and without ponchos and umbrellas, several attendees left, including me and my plus one. We could still hear “Pearl Necklace” and “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide” all the way to the parking lot.

According to Setlist.fm, the concert continued with “I Gotsta Get Paid”, “My Head’s in Mississippi”, “Sixteen Tons” (the Merle Travis cover), “Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers” and “Just Got Paid”.

Then came their monster hits “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs”. They followed that with “La Grange’ and ‘Tush”.

All three bandmates, Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard (the drummer with a beard) are all around 70 years old and gave their all, and despite the rain their set was nearly perfect and that feeling was echoed from their videos on stage.

Asch’s play, in Yiddish, concerns the love between a prostitute and the daughter of the brothel’s owner. The controversial play is produced and is successful in Europe and heads to New York. Copious Love Productions to co-produce play reading fundraisers for families of El Paso shooting victims Sept. 9 & 11 Copious Love Productions is thrilled to partner with local artist/activists Ana Maria Campoy and Sofía Raquel Sánchez to produce two play readings of Just Like Us by Karen Zacharias on Monday, September 9, at 7:30pm at Solo Bar (200 Roy St in lower Queen Anne) and Querida Familia: A Fundraiser for El Paso on Wednesday, September 11, at 7:30pm at Copious (2220 NW Market St in Ballard).

hits the open road. The young man has Down syndrome and has been a ward of the facility for a number of years mainly because government officials didn’t know what else to do with him after he was orphaned, and even though none of the residence’s supervisors believe he belongs there they all agree he’s better off with them than entombed and forgotten in some state-run mental institution.

At least, that’s what those in charge believed before he slipped silently into the night right out from under their nose. Now the powers that be are ready to ship him to an institution once they find out where he’s gone, and unless resident aid Eleanor (Dakota Johnson) can find him quickly that’s exactly what her bosses are going to do.

Tyler (Shia LaBeouf) is a North Carolina crab fisherman who has lost his way, spiraling into depression, anger and alcohol abuse after the death of his brother. Now he steals the catches of others to survive, snagging a handful of their traps here and there whenever he can. But after his latest escapades lead to him getting beaten up by one of his brother’s former workmates, Duncan (John Hawkes), and some of his thugs, in a fit of anger Tyler does something that inadvertently causes $12,000 worth of destruction to a local dock. His boat destroyed, with no one to blame for his misfortunes but himself, he decides to hit the open road and hightail it to Florida before those most aggrieved by his actions catch up to him.

What happens next is an inspiring odd couple road trip (and eventually boat trip) comedy-drama that’s so incredibly entertaining I think the smile I had plastered on my face for the duration of The Peanut Butter Falcon stayed there long after the film had come to an end. Tyler and Zak end up making one another’s acquaintance, the former agreeing to help the latter get to a wrestling school supposedly run by a man calling himself The Salt Water Redneck (Thomas Haden Church) just as long as the latter doesn’t slow him down. One thing leads to another and the pair form a surprisingly multifaceted friendship, Tyler showing Zak his disability does not mean he should give up on any of his dreams.

In turn, Zak makes Tyler understand that grief is not an excuse for his recent bouts of awful behavior and that if he wants to make

a good life for himself he’s going to have to take responsibility for his actions.

I’m not sure what portions of Tyler Nilson and Mike Schwartz’s feature-length debut I loved more. The early sections where Zak and Tyler hit the road together and begin to bond are captivatingly priceless. But so are the middle pieces where their friendship takes root and the flowers born from it blossom. As for the latter third, when the pair hit the high seas on a homemade raft straight out of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Eleanor arrives to make their duo a trio? It’s nothing less than stupendous, everything culminating in a manner that’s as energetically hypnotizing as it is cathartically heartfelt. It all works, every beat and every note, and as contrived and as obvious as emotionally specific as much of this drama might be, it still captivated me body and soul for every second of its melodiously paced 93 minutes.

The find here is young Gottsagen. Nilson and Schwartz wrote the character specifically for him, the resulting movie confirmation of their belief he would be able to carry it without any sort of strain whatsoever. The pair met him at a camp for actors with disabilities and were immediately blown away. After watching what Gottsagen does here it’s easy to see how that could have been the case. This is a complex, multifaceted performance overflowing in

emotional nuance. The youngster makes Zak leap off the screen, and as debuts are concerned his is unquestionably one of the most distinctive and memorable that I’ve had the pleasure to see this year.

Not to be outdone, this is the best performance former child actor LaBeouf has ever given. As great as he was in Lawless, Fury, American Honey and Borg vs McEnroe, he takes things to a whole new level here. Mining a multitude of emotional depths that run the gamut from anger to joy to sorrow to fear to contentment to all places in-between, LaBeouf never retreats as Tyler, never does anything not feel authentic. In a movie that so easily could have descended into saccharin pabulum if the actors would have allowed themselves to wallow in the more melodramatic recesses of Nilson and Schwart’s script, instead the former Transformers star refuses to let that happen. He brings a knowing melancholic depth to his portrayal of a man in grief-stricken crisis that allows his eventual redemption mean something honest and pure, LaBeouf and Gottsagen sharing effortless chemistry that leaps right off the screen.

The rest of the cast is equally outstanding, especially Johnson, who after appearing in (and making boatloads of money from) those odious Fifty Shades of Grey motion pictures now seems set to appear in a variety of eccentric, daringly filmmaker-centric productions like this, Luca

Guadagnino’s Suspiria remake, Drew Goddard’s Bad Times at the El Royale or Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s upcoming The Friend than she is another big budget Hollywood studio production. As great as they all are, however, I do wish some of them (most notably a somewhat underutilized Hawkes) could have been allowed to play a bit more against type, and as such many of them don’t disappear as completely inside this film’s intoxicating milieu to quite the same extent the core trio of Gottsagen, LaBeouf and Johnson do.

Not that this matters all that much.

There is a literary purity to what Nilson and Schwartz have come up with that’s difficult to resist. They care about Zak. They treat him with respect. They do not belittle him or utilize his disability to generate a few cheap laughs or a handful of sloppily counterfeit tears. His and Tyler’s friendship becomes a brotherly bond that’s undeniably genuine, their mutual belief in one another a transcendent lesson in understanding and faith that allows the impossible to feel possible and the miraculous to seem like it should be the status quo. The Peanut Butter Falcon is a distinctly American fable of resilience and perseverance that’s nothing less than wonderful, this marvelous riverboat journey one I am not soon to forget.

Gleefully murderous Ready or Not plays a winning game

An orphan who never knew her parents, she is marrying the love of her life Alex Le Domas (Mark O’Brien), estranged son of the wealthy and powerful Le Domas family. For over a century, they have amassed a gaming empire that puts Parker Bros. and Hasbro to shame. But something happened to Alex when he was a child and since then he’s never been able to look at his father Tony (Henry Czerny) or mother Becky (Andie MacDowell) in the eye. He’s even barely able to share more than a handful of kind words with his younger sister Emilie (Melanie Scrofano), spending more time feeling sorry for her than anything else. Only his older brother Daniel (Adam Brody), a chronic drunk with a greedy wife (Elyse Levesque) he openly loathes, can understand and relate to Alex’s disdain for the Le Domas clan, the pair able to silently communicate with one another no matter what else might be happening at any given moment.

Grace doesn’t know what caused this estrangement or understand why everyone seems to be walking on eggshells on her and Alex’s wedding day, she just knows she feels a special kind of euphoria in becoming the wife of a man she adores and gaining an incredibly large, seemingly closeknit family, both on the same day. But even after saying, “I do,” it turns out there is one more thing to be done before the young woman can officially be considered part of the family. At midnight, Grace must play a game, one chosen entirely by chance, almost as if it were selected via magic, and continue playing until the first rays of sunshine trumpet the arrival of a new day.

That game turns out to be “Hide and Seek,” and in the malevolently witty and delightfully gruesome horror-comedy Ready or Not this children’s game is the last thing you ever want to play at the Le Domas mansion. For reasons best left vague, Grace needs to stay alive until dawn while at the same time every member of Alex’s family, as well as their butler Stevens (John Ralston), attempts to kill her. It’s a whole mess of cats up against one very frightened, yet resolutely determined to survive mouse, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Devil’s Due) and screenwriters Guy Busick and Ryan Murphy delivering a funhouse of thrills, chills and laughs that also just so happens to be one of the best films I’ve seen all summer.

Subverting genre convention whenever and wherever it can, this thriller has a glorious time playing with a variety of differ-

ent genre tropes as it seductively weaves its way towards its fiendishly bloody conclusion. It’s like a gore-filled Clue melded with You’re Next and then all blended together with healthy dolloping of Agatha Christie, Stephen King and MAD Magazine just for good measure. The film also presents a captivatingly complex heroine with more depth than initially meets the eye, Grace’s resilience coupling nicely with her forceful survival instincts, neither of which diminish her intelligence or emotional complexity whatsoever.

She’s instantly likable, and even when forced to do the distasteful I still found it impossible not to root for the young bride for every step of her nightmarish journey.

Weaving, so terrific in Joe Lynch’s sadly underseen gem Mayhem and a magnetic scene-stealer in Amazon’s “Picnic at Hanging Rock” miniseries and during a muchtoo-brief arc during the first season of “Ash vs Evil Dead,” is spellbinding as Grace. Her playful exuberance and wondrous excitement believably give way to unfathomable shock, haunting disappointment and unrelenting terror with deft gracefulness. The actress makes the character’s innate goodness continually shine through no matter how terrible things become for her. Weaving is electrifying, her three key scenes with an equally spectacular MacDowell bringing this entire story and its various themes into such pristine, eloquently pure focus I was amazed by what the two women were able to achieve.

Even at just over 90 minutes it does take the directors a few moments to kick things into gear. The early exposition foreshadowing Alex’s estrangement from his parents and why the Le Domas family must play this game every time one of their own takes a spouse are moderately clunky, and if not for Czerny’s articulately smarmy delivery it’s likely these moments would have worn my patience perilously thin. Also, while there are plenty of surprises to be found inside Busick and Murphy’s amusing script, I equally cannot say I was at all shocked by much of what happens during their story’s climax. At a certain point it becomes fairly clear there are only so many places this narrative can go, and as such the power of the final act is slightly diminished because of this.

But none of this is deadly to the film itself. The directors orchestrate the action with energetically giddy aplomb, building tension and suspense with an authentically organic intensity that kept me sitting on the edge of my seat. They also allow all of the actors individual moments to shine, and along with the aforementioned Czerny and MacDowell fellow cast members Scrofano, Levesque, Nicky Guadagni (as Alex’s battle axe-wielding Aunt Helene) and Kristian Bruun (as Emilie’s past-his-prime frat boy husband Fitch) all deliver exquisite support. Best of all is Brody. His Daniel is an

intriguing enigma who plays things so close to the vest deciphering his motivations isn’t always easy to do, the way in which the actor layers his performance with a mixture of sarcasm, depression, brotherly affection and seething disdain wondrous.

I want to say so much more about the plot mechanics being utilized by the filmmakers but I’m going to refrain from doing so.

What I will add is that the technical elements are sensational, Andrew M. Stearn’s (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) production design, Avery Plewes’ (Everything, Everything) costumes, Terel Gibson’s (Sorry to

Bother You) editing, Brett Jutkiewicz’s (Wanderland) cinematography and especially Brian Tyler’s (Escape Room) score all sublime. But it is the emphasis on the characters, their individual development and how they deal with the murderous situation they find themselves forced to endure that helps make Ready or Not essential.

This is a masterfully entertaining game of subterfuge, innuendo, romance and survival where the ultimate winners are the viewers who bought themselves a ticket to see it get played.

He twice saved the life of the former President of the United States, once inside the White House and once during a diplomatic trip to London. Current President Alan Trumball (Morgan Freeman) holds Banning in such high regard he’s thinking of promoting him to head the Secret Service

once the agency’s current director (Lance Reddick) retires. It’s a plum opportunity, and one no one in their right mind should turn down. But Banning, even with age and physical exertion starting to take their toll upon him, isn’t sure he wants to get out of the field, this man of action worried that sitting at a desk supervising others will be a waste of his lethal protective abilities.

He might be right about that. After a devastating attack on Trumball via a massive miniature drone strike leaves all of Banning’s Secret Service team dead and he and the President in the hospital, it becomes clear this agent

Problematic Ode to Joy hits too many false notes

by Sara Michelle Fetters Now playing ODE TO JOY Now playing Brooklyn librarian Charlie (Martin Freeman) is not a happy man, and that’s entirely by choice. He’s a rare individual affected by narcolepsy with cataplexy, and if Charlie ever experiences giant emotional mood swings he can immediately pass out right there on the spot. This is unquestionably dangerous, but that doesn’t mean he still can’t live a full and vibrant life, his younger brother Cooper (Jake Lacy) certain his sibling could find lifelong happiness with the right person if he would just take a slight risk and put himself out there.

Opportunity arises one random afternoon in the form of the impulsive and beautiful Francesca (Morena Baccarin). Charlie is smitten, and she finds him attractive, too, but even though they have an instantaneous emotional connection he still worries his odd medical condition is destined to doom any chance of a relationship long before it has the chance to blossom. Instead, he convinces Cooper to start dating the young woman instead. This way, Charlie can be around Francesca with no chance of feeling joy or euphoria, the sight of his brother romancing the one person he’s ever been most attracted to certain to keep any chance of personal happiness delightfully at bay.

Partially inspired by a true story first broadcast on WBEZ Chicago’s “This American Life” in June of 2010, screenwriter Max Werner’s (Fun Size) and director Jason Winer’s (Arthur) well-intentioned if still moderately distasteful romantic comedy Ode to Joy is one strange little motion picture.

Featuring a couple of strong performances from Freeman and Baccarin, some nice supporting moments from an always luminous Jane Curtain (as Francesca’s cancer-stricken Aunt Sylvia) and a scene-stealing turn from a terrific Melissa Rauch as Bethany, a young woman whose temperament and demeanor is just perfect as a potential romantic partner from Charlie, nonetheless this movie grated on my nerves something fierce. For everything it gets right there’s so much that can’t help but ring false, facile and slightly distasteful about this endeavor, the bad taste it left in my mouth after it had concluded one that took a little while to dissipate.

continued from page 6 isn’t done serving his country in the field. This becomes especially true when he is arrested for the assassination attempt, dogged FBI investigator Agent Thompson (Jada Pinkett Smith) stating in no uncertain terms all of the evidence points to him as the perpetrator.

Knowing in his gut that Trumball is still in danger, Banning escapes the hospital and goes on the run knowing that those who framed him aren’t going to want any loose ends and will likely attempt to track him down before he can uncover their identity. With Thompson on his tail and a bevy of highly-trained assassins gunning for him, this Secret Service legend will rise to the occasion one more time, and no matter what obstacles are tossed like a grenade in his direction he’ll protect the President of the United States whatever the personal cost might ultimately prove to be.

I seriously doubt anyone who saw 2013’s Die Hard knock-off Olympus Has Fallen could ever have imagined they were witnessing the first installment in what would prove to be “the Mike Banning trilogy.” But after 2016’s London Has Fallen and now this latest chapter of the series Angel Has Fallen that is exactly what we now have. These films are aggressively violent, moderately jingoistic 1980s-style action throwbacks more reminiscent of the works of Chuck Norris, Steven

Pity, because Freeman is quite good, the veteran actor underplaying things with goofily sardonic aplomb. More importantly, even though they spend the majority of the story forced to remain at arm’s length from one another, he has marvelous chemistry with Baccarin, the Deadpool and Serenity actress a ray of continual sunshine the moment her character is introduced. This is especially true during a sequence where their characters go on a date not long after they’ve first met, Charlie taking Francesca to the most depressing off-off-off-OFFBroadway play likely ever produced in order for him to not feel even a shred of happiness or sexual arousal. Freeman and Baccarin are delightful throughout these scenes, each actor exhibiting a relaxed chemistry I was instantly drawn to. Both are giving everything they’ve got, neither interested in allowing the uglier aspects of the story to become bothersome.

That they do become troublesome and annoying has more to do with Werner’s script and Winer’s uneven direction than it does anything else. I’m not expert in this disease and I certainly don’t know how fast or loose the pair are playing with the symptoms someone suffering from this form of cataplexy are forced to endure, but I do know how this affliction is showcased here frequently bor-

ders on becoming risibly obnoxious. The contrivances of when Charlie is suffering and when he has some semblance of control over himself is never entirely clear, the worse symptoms of his malady seeming to only show themselves when the plot most needs them to and not in a believably naturalistic fashion. These narrative contrivances grow more impossibly vexing as the film goes on, and by the time the main character found himself in a perilous situation dangling precipitously in and out of consciousness I could hardly have cared less.

Then there is the blatantly sensationalistic inclusion of Aunt Sylvia, who only seems to exist to give Francesca permission to fall in love with someone who might one day cause her great pain through no fault of his own. The fact this character isn’t wholly insufferable is in large part thanks to the massive talents of the actress portraying her, the almost always luminous Curtin finding a way to deliver a line or shoot a crooked eyebrow raise across a room that’s marvelous.

But that doesn’t make Sylvia any less inauthentic and inexcusable, this one-dimensional caricature of a cancer patient a regressive, melodramatic insertion into a story that honestly didn’t even need her.

On the plus side, even though her part is relatively small Rauch is nothing short of

splendid. The movie comes alive whenever she is up on the screen. Better, her character feels like one of the few that has any real agency outside of Charlie and Francesca’s non-romance romance. The humor involving Bethany is honest and true in ways the rest of the narrative seldom is, Rauch speaking with a hurriedly calm cadence that’s strangely comforting and amusingly goofy both at the same time. Better, the actress has a scene near the end with Freeman that’s just plain incredible, everything her character is angrily, yet still comfortingly, complaining about and stating ringing with an air of hauntedly wounded truth I wholly responded to.

If only the rest of Ode to Joy could have done the same. I’m not saying a good romantic comedy couldn’t have been made from this premise, with this cast I think it is obvious that isn’t the case at all, but because so much of it feels so fake and forcefully, almost purposefully maudlin, it just didn’t happen here.

I find it difficult to get a handle on what it was exactly Werner and Winer were going for, so much of their romantic comedy reveling in its disease-of-the-week melodramatic excesses I found finding enjoyment in practically any of this close to impossible.

Seagal or Jean-Claude Van Damme than they are the above-the-title efforts of Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone (not that there’s a ton of difference between them all). They showcase a form of unbridled masculinity that almost feels passé in today’s current political and social environment, their aggressively virile intensity unsurprisingly not going to please everyone.

Not going to lie, the first two movies have kind of started to grow on me over the past few years, the crazy, messed-up and absurdly gory London Has Fallen in particular. The loony cartoonishness of these action spectacles almost can’t help but moderately tickle my funny bone and excite my senses a moderate amount. Even better, as brawny showcases for Butler to flex his muscles, sweat profusely and angrily growl with ever-increasing magnetic intensity, they’re just about perfect, and while I’d never describe any of the entries in this trilogy as being “good,” that doesn’t mean I still don’t find them to be oddly entertaining, a statement that includes this latest effort as well.

I will say that Angel Has Fallen does try to have its cake and eat it, too, and that’s not exactly awesome. After the implausibly idiotic events of the previous two films where Banning was presented to be nothing short of superhuman, I can’t say learning his body was starting to fail him due to all his heroic exploits generated much in the way of sympathy out of me. While I appreciate that screenwriters Robert Mark Kamen (Taken), Matt

Cook (The Duel) and director Ric Roman Waugh (Snitch) would like to humanize the character, to ground him in some semblance of authentic human emotion, at least somewhat, I can’t say they are that successful in their attempt. All they really do is add narrative elements that grind things to a tediously sudden halt, and it is only when Banning gets back to work trying to solve the mystery of who it is that has framed him and the bullets start flying once again that things get back to being entertaining.

This includes an entire subplot devoted to the Secret Service agent’s estrangement from his Vietnam vet father Clay, a former “tunnel rat” now living off-the-grid as if he were an even more politically paranoid Ted Kaczynski. The pair’s reunion feels cheap and maudlin, and if not for the fact Clay is portrayed with great gonzo gusto by the great Nick Nolte it’s likely I’d have rolled my eyes back into my head in disgust and checked out of the movie entirely. But because he is, and in large part because Butler appears to be having such a blast acting alongside the three-time Academy Award nominee, these father-son moments of togetherness aren’t nearly as annoying as they otherwise could have been. Better, once the team of assassins comes hunting for them Waugh stages scene after scene of pyrotechnic lunacy that’s pretty darn sensational, the melodramatic tedium of all this inert character-building stuff thankfully tossed to the sideline.

Pinkett Smith is wasted in a nothing role, her Agent Thompson nothing more than a gender-flipped Samuel Gerard clone from The Fugitive that the script seems to have no use for whatsoever. Also, while Danny Huston (as a former Special Forces operative who now runs a Blackwater-like private military company) is presented as the big-bad hunting Banning, it’s never a secret who it is sitting behind the curtain pulling the former soldier’s strings. There are zero bombshells here, and not for one single second did I not know where everything was headed and how the film itself would end up coming to conclusion.

Even with all of that being the case, even though I know I shouldn’t probably say this, I still had a pretty great time watching Angel Has Fallen. The final 30 minutes delivers a cacophony of old school action theatrics that had me sitting giddily on the edge of my seat just waiting for Banning to pull out his trusty knives and go to work skull-crushing work against those out to assassinate the President. Expertly edited by Gabriel Fleming (Blindspotting) and kinetically shot by Jules O’Loughlin (Krampus), this climax was well worth the wait. Faults, flaws and all, this supposedly final chapter in the adventures of Mike Banning got the job done as far as I was concerned, and I’m honestly glad I took the time to give it a look.
