well-executed programming at Café Nordo in the future. I can also encourage you to watch for and attend other events starring and/or written by uber-talented Sara Porkalob.

7th and Jackson is a newer venture for Ms. Porkalob, whose writing has most deeply been for her solo performances and digging into her own family’s extraordinary past. Best known for Dragon Lady, where she tells her grandmother’s story about being a Filipino gangster, Porkalob has extended that story to Dragon Mama, and soon to Dragon Baby, wending her way down the generations to her own beginnings.

7th and Jackson amplifies her writing talents to plays where other people appear and other stories are told. In this play, Lee (Anasofia Gallegos), Min (Corinne Magin), and Ada (Sarah Nicole Russell) are 1940s school friends who long to emulate the suc-

cess of the Andrews Sisters, singing threepart-harmony and getting famous. Their hopes rest on a local restaurant and jazz club in the International District of Seattle.

Porkalob brings to the fore a sensibility of intersectionality as she demonstrates through the characters how the onset of World War II affected communities of color.

While most of us might have been taught about how the imperial Japanese wanted to attack our country, making World War II a very stark and U.S.-patriotic time, Seattleites were very close to the Japanese community that was removed from Bainbridge Island and forced into internment camps in the deserts of the United States.

Porkalob’s characters are black, Korean, and Filipina. Min, the Korean-American, is targeted by those who assume she is Japanese, even though her family hates what Japan did to Korea, years before. Ada, the young black singer, points out in the play that black men were not allowed to serve in the Army and were treated as less than citizens.

The three main actors are called upon to each portray one of their parents, as well, in a kind of “mini solo performance” style. It’s a way that Porkalob infuses her style into characters she doesn’t portray herself.

The evening contains well-known songs the Andrews Sisters would have made famous, accompanied by a small house band. In Café Nordo’s signature way, the food served in this four-course meal, designed by Chef Erin Brindley, matches aspects of the evening.

The dim sum-style appetizers included tempura baby turnips and garlic long beans and a pork soup with dumplings followed.

The most insanely crunchy buttermilkfried-chicken “ssam” came with Koreanstyle lettuce wraps. I’ve never tasted anything I wanted tons more of so insistently!

(Can I get a gallon bowlful, please, stat?)

Dessert was a luscious blueberry pielet with coconut ice cream. Exquisite!

Watching for the “next” event Sara Porkalob is doing, whether as an actor,

writing for herself or writing for others, is a worthy pursuit. People who see her lauded in many places might think she’s just a “flavor of the moment,” but her talent is undeniable and we’re lucky to have her energy infusing our stages. One upcoming event will be a world premiere play written by Porkalob, Alex and Alix, to be presented at ArtsWest in April 2020.

Looking ahead to Café Nordo events, they’ve announced their next full season of shows with the first, in September, titled Violet’s Attic. It appears that The Culinarium invites you to look at the world from a doll’s eyes. I can’t quite tell if that’s supposed to be creepy or not…

Rigoletto at Seattle Opera: Wow!

I’m pleased to tell you that this Seattle Opera production, stagedirected by Lindy Hume and designed by Richard Roberts, is by far the best from the viewpoint of drama and stagecraft.

When Hume and Roberts created this production in 2012 for New Zealand Opera, they updated it to Silvio Berlusconi’s time as Italian Prime Minister. Berlusconi was then on trial for corruption and child prostitution, and details of his orgies that featured young girls were everywhere in the news. Nobody knew then what was in store for the United

States, but the opera’s indictment of the heartless, misogynistic, obscenely wealthy men at the top of the power structure feels completely relevant to America today.

Rogers’ set is extraordinarily beautiful and effective. The walls of the Duke’s palace, with its huge golden doors and balustrades, is onstage throughout the performance. During the scenes that take place in poor neighborhoods, the palace is lifted just enough that the audience can always see it bearing down on the streets and homes of the humbler characters. The rotating set, combined with lighting designed by Jason Morphett, augments the sinister, outof-control atmosphere of the drama. At key moments, the set twirls at a dizzying pace to show the confusion and distress of court jester Rigoletto and his daughter Gilda.

In the title role, baritone Giuseppe Altomare did an excellent job of portraying the character’s cruelty in the Duke’s court, his tenderness and overprotectiveness as a father, and his fierce drive for vengeance after Gilda is kidnapped and abused.

In the performance I attended, the standout was soprano Soraya Mafi in her role debut as Gilda. Her singing was heartstoppingly gorgeous, and she was utterly convincing as a naïve but determined young teenager.

One of the strong points of Hume’s production is its unblinking focus on the trauma and betrayal visited upon Gilda. In other productions I’ve seen, Gilda is wooed by the Duke in a garden or courtyard outside Rigoletto’s house, and her subsequent abduction is also shown from outside the house, with the courtiers carrying the inert girl down an exterior ladder. In Hume’s production, the Duke invades the house and corners Gilda, who is already dressed for bed in the most innocent pair of pink pajamas you’ve ever seen. After he leaves, the smitten Gilda sings “Caro Nome” from her tiny bed, which looks almost like a cradle, and goes to sleep. The courtiers then swarm the house, ransacking the kitchen and bedroom, grabbing Gilda and knocking her out. It’s a suitably horrifying scene, as is the

following scene in which the Duke and the courtiers pass around the pink pajama bottoms while Gilda lies unconscious in the Duke’s private quarters.

Tenor Yongzhao Yui did a creditable job as the Duke, but his voice was a bit too heavy for the role, which demands a brighter tone.

As the assassin Sparafucile, bass Ante Jerkunica was superb, glorying in the role’s extraordinarily low notes. Mezzo-soprano Emily Fons sang well and acted fearlessly as Sparafucile’s sister Maddalena.

Under the direction of conductor Carlo Montanaro, the orchestra sounded great.

Particular praise is due the woodwind section.

The all-male chorus plays an important role in this opera, both musically and dramatically, and carried it off with aplomb.

Chorusmaster John Keene received a welldeserved ovation during the curtain calls.

tice, he still lost the next ten or twenty years of his cruel, high-flying life.

No such reckoning comes to the Duke of Mantua in Verdi’s operatic world. Though the fictional Duke and the all-too-real Epstein are equally famous for their orgies and sexual corruption of the rich, the powerful, and the innocent, the Duke eludes Nemesis, and – at least within the compass of the opera – goes happily on his wicked way, leaving a trail of grief and destruction behind him. In this dark world – full of gorgeous music – the irresponsible rich get away with their crimes. So why have people wanted to see Rigoletto ever since its debut in 1851? For the same reason we read about the crimes of men like Harvey Weinstein, Cardinal McCarrick, and Jeffery Epstein with such fascination: it confirms our suspicions about the predation of wealthy and powerful sociopaths while showing us a glittery world that we will (probably) never experience.

Traditional versions of Rigoletto set the opera in Mantua, Italy in the distant past – usually the 16th century setting of Victor Hugo’s original play – with the Duke and his minions in doublet and hose, and the women in sweeping gowns and elaborate head-pieces. Rigoletto is a hunch-backed court jester in cap and bells, whose nasty sense of humor delights the Duke but infuriates the aristocratic courtiers who are targets for his mean-spirited wit. The courtiers get back at Rigoletto by kidnapping a young woman they think is his mistress to present to the Duke as a bed-time present.

But the girl, Gilda, turns out to be Rigoletto’s own daughter and someone the Duke is already in the process of luring into his web with lies about being a poor student who fell in love with her at church. Gilda is so innocent that she falls for the Duke’s deception and conceals her developing relationship from Rigoletto. The rest is excruciating, tragic history.

It’s worth preparing for Seattle Opera’s updated production by checking in on a traditional interpretation of Rigoletto – the best and most lavish version being the 1982 Jean-Pierre Ponnelle film in which Luciano Pavarotti plays the Duke to Ingvar Wixell’s Rigoletto (see it on YouTube). Ponnelle plays up the extravagant wealth and licentiousness of the court of Mantua, and presents Verdi’s music – alternately charming and exciting – as a fabulous accompaniment to the fabulousness of the rich and famous. The tragedy that unfolds is no less terrible for being in the past but, as stage director Lindy Hume points out in her program comments about the new produc-

tion, setting the opera in the fabulous past “lets the licentious Duke off the hook for his appalling treatment of women.” In the familiar present – in the #MeToo era – there can be no such forgiveness.

Hume’s brilliant re-thinking of Rigoletto updates the court of Mantua to a corporate universe much like our own in which the Duke’s palace is an urban mansion and the sycophantic courtiers include power-suited businessmen, mini-skirted playmates, uniformed military men, glittering socialites, and a pair of cardinals in full vestments.

Every dimension of wealth and privilege is represented, along with the young sexobjects (male and female) who are possibly naïve, ambitious, or procured under some form of duress. Even though most of us haven’t seen the inside of Mar-a-Lago or East 71st Street, it’s somehow familiar – the comfortable sexism, the bonhomie of menbeing-men, the bustling servitude of secretaries, houseboys, personal admins, and, yes, the resident comedian, Rigoletto, who makes the Duke laugh at the expense of the parasites who surround him. This is a setting for our moment, that sacrifices none of the virtues of Verdi’s music or Francesco Maria Piave’s libretto adaptation of the Hugo play, but which adds a contemporary dimension that rings true for our times.

The opening night performance was uniformly terrific. Rigoletto is a dream for opera singers and their audiences because it’s a regular hit parade of memorable tunes and every role shows off the voice to its best advantage. The Armenian tenor Liparit Avetisyant, making his Seattle Opera debut, wowed the audience with his robust delivery of the famous “La donna è mobile,” and “Questa, quella” while performing the Duke’s unconscionable seductions with a casual air of entitlement. I’ve seen Rigoletto many times, but this is the first time I’ve seen the Duke seduce Gilda while texting behind her back.

Madison Leonard, who sang Gilda with bona fide star power, is practically a hometown girl being from Coeur d’Alene, but she’s about to become a citizen of the world.

She has the magical combination of a soaring soprano voice paired with heartfelt acting. The opening night audience cheered her performance of the formidable aria, “Gautier Maldè”, for a sustained pause in the action, and rose to their feet when she came onstage for her final bow. Though she has so far performed for smaller companies around the country, she is destined for international fame. Don’t miss her – you can say you saw her at the dawn of a great career.

The opening night Rigoletto was Lester Lynch, a baritone last seen here as Di Luna in Il Trovatore and earlier as Crown in Porgy and Bess. The role of Rigoletto is tricky because the performer has to be convincing both as a nasty comedian –plausibly suggesting to the Duke that he murder or imprison the husband of a woman the Duke wants to rape – while at the same time persuading the audience that he is a loving and devoted parent to Gilda. Lynch pulled this off so smoothly that you never doubted the depth of his feelings, both in his love for his daughter and in his hatred for the courtiers. That Lynch is an African American brought an additional dimension to Rigoletto’s characterization as a person who has to please his masters while despising their taunting and fearing their power.

The scene in which Rigoletto confronts the courtiers in an attempt to find his daughter –alternately defying, wheedling, and pleading – is truly heartbreaking. In one of the most famous scenes of dramatic irony in opera, the audience and the courtiers know that Gilda is being raped in the next room even as Rigoletto hopes to save her. Lynch performed the triple-layers of intensity – pretended indifference, then rage, then tears – with the desperation of a panicky parent who slowly realizes that he has come too late. Lynch is beginning to perform internationally now – and no wonder. He’s all that – and more.

Even the smaller parts were sung and acted to perfection, with the major standout the Croatian bass Ante Jerkunica as Sparafucile, the hit man whose weirdly noble value system saves Rigoletto while condemning his daughter. His resonant bass and subtle acting were unforgettable.

Milwaukee mezzo-soprano Emily Fons was equally compelling as Maddalena, the bargirl whose crush on the singing Duke spares his thankless life. The famous quartet in which Rigoletto and Gilda stand outside the bar looking in at the window, while the Duke and Madalena flirt inside, is only possible if the mezzo-soprano is equal to the force of the three main characters – and Fons was more than a match.

Seattle Opera’s new Rigoletto would make Verdi proud – Verdi, the revolutionary, who used music as a tool to achieve independence and justice in Italy’s fight for nationhood. To use him now as a tool to shed light on the dark, private world of male privilege in high places is timely and appropriate – as well as a walloping good time at the opera.

Manic Nekrotronic a goofy supernatural horror-action-comedy cartoon

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer NEKROTRONIC Now playing It’s not really a surprise that Kiah Roache-Turner and Tristan Roache-Turner, the Aussie minds behind the Mad Maxstyle zombie action-horror-comedy Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, would make something as silly and as unrelentingly weird as the supernatural cybernetic horror adventure Nekrotronic. Like a melding of a random episode of “Angel” or “Supernatural” with the likes of sci-fi or horror titles like Johnny Mnemonic, Shocker or The Matrix, this is a blatantly loopy thriller that seems to take great pleasure in its own messed-up ludicrousness. It’s not going to be for everyone, and it’s hard to imagine the film is going to have even close to the lasting cult cinematic impact the brothers’ prior effort has had.

Not that any of that stopped me from having a grand time watching it. Nekrotronic is a bizarre, fast-paced hoot, its slapdash devil-may-care storytelling dynamics oddly working for me more often than they did not. While by no means an underrated gem or an existential supernatural cybernetic video game-inspired comic bookstyle adventure that could be described as being “ahead of its time,” I found the Roache-Turner brothers’ latest to be a lot of fun. It is an imaginative rollercoaster ride that thankfully never takes itself too seriously. It also features a stupendously selfindulgent, show-stopping powerhouse of performance from the great Monica Bellucci as the film’s all-powerful villain, and if the opportunity arises to watch it again I will do so in nothing less than a heartbeat.

Sanitation worker Howard “Howie” North (Ben O’Toole) and his friend and co-worker Rangi (Epine “Bob” Savea) are having a fairly normal day until they are suddenly attacked by an apparently possessed random stranger on the street. They are saved by Luther (David Wenham) and his two daughters Molly (Caroline Ford) and Torquel (Tess Haubrich). The new game Rangi was playing on his cellphone triggered an unforeseen, almost magical response from Howie, and using an insidious bit of spyware the evil Finnegan (Bellucci) and her minions designed, she was able to monitor his almost inhuman reaction to this electronic stimulation and send one of her demons to go kill him. Turns out, she’s the young man’s long-lost (and quite evil) mother, and Luther, Molly and Torquel are necromancers who have sworn to stop her from unleashing Hell on Earth.

As bad news goes, Howie’s pretty sure it can’t get any worse than that. But he’s of course wrong about that. Not only is his mother a soul-sucking monstrosity, by utilizing the internet, cell towers and humanity’s increasing disconnect from one another as they turn into zombies looking at social media, playing games and using their cellphones as if they were an additional body part she’s intent on infecting all of Australia and then the entire world with her ghoulish evil. As fate would have it, Howie is the only one who can stop her from doing just that, and while his own magical abilities are buried pretty deep within dormant sections of his psyche, Molly and Torquel are just the duo who could help him join their necromancer ranks and become the powerful demon hunter he was born to be.

It’s all pretty dumb, and I swear I saw “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” run with a similar sort of plot (at least in regards to demons making a home for themselves out on the internet) early in its run. But what Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner’s film

lacks in originality it frequently makes up for in giddily go-for-broke enthusiasm.

There is a manic zippy mania to all of this that managed to bring a decent sized smile to me face, and as absurd as the plot is I got such a kick out of watching Howie, Molly and Torquel do their thing most of these inanities barely bothered me.

Not that there aren’t plenty of plot developments that are left either frustratingly unfinished or are so half-baked it might have been better had the Roache-Turner brothers chosen to exclude them altogether. There’s a bit involving Rangi that’s like something out of either An American Werewolf in London or The Frighteners that just doesn’t work, and no matter how energetically game Savea throws himself into the role nothing he does sadly ends up working very well. More of an issue is how the hectic pace of the motion picture, especially early on, ends up making things initially hard to follow. Even though things are fairly straightforward and follow a classical “hero’s journey” narrative path, there’s so much exposition that the filmmaker’s apparent desire to keep their foot stamped firmly down upon the gas pedal does work in opposition as far as making things clear for an audience is concerned.

Even with that being the case I honestly like the way Kiah Roache-Turner orchestrates things from a directorial standpoint.

He refuses to cut things into choppy bits of visual nonsense, instead allowing cinematographer Tim Nagle and editor Christine Cheung the freedom to craft elongated sequences of action and mayhem that add a layer of intensity and excitement they wouldn’t possess otherwise. He also gives Bellucci all the room she wants to vamp things up, the veteran French icon appearing to be having a devilishly jubilant time portraying the film’s carnivorously seductive villain.

Again, I can’t say this one is going to stick with me in the same way that the Roache-Turner brother’s Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead has. This ridiculous supernatural horror-thriller-comedy-action hybrid for the age of social media and cybernetic interconnectivity is a live-action adult cartoon (one that even opens with an imaginative animated prologue sequence, nonetheless), and I do find it exceedingly difficult to treat it seriously because of this. But that doesn’t mean I still didn’t have a fair amount of fun watching Nekrotronic, and as midnight genre entertainment I’d wholeheartedly urge those with an affinity for this sort of thing to take the time to check the motion picture out.

Well-cast Good Boys a funny if forgettable tween comedy

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer GOOD BOYS Now playing A new school year has started, and Max (Jacob Tremblay), Lucas (Keith L. Williams) and Thor (Brady Noon), otherwise known as “The Beanbag Boys,” are all excited to be in the sixth grade. They are in that strange, unexplainable middle period between pre-pubescence and their blossoming into overly-hormonal teenagers, these self-described “tweens” certain nothing will break their bond and that they’ll remain best friends forever. But when Max is invited to a “kissing party” by the coolest kid in school, angling invites for Lucas and Thor in the process, things take an unexpected turn, the trio embarking on a crazy, messed-up adventure that will introduce them to an adult world they’re maybe still too inexperienced, and definitely much too young, to fully understand.

Basically a tween-age Superbad, Weird Science or Ferris Bueller Day’s Off, the very R-rated comedy Good Boys isn’t without its laughs. The talented trio of young actors at the center of director and co-writer Gene Stupnitsky’s feature-length debut are more than up to the ribald chal-

lenges that the filmmaker and his fellow screenwriter Lee Eisenberg (Bad Teacher) have placed in front of them to deal with.

Tremblay, Williams and Noon are terrific, their friendship heartfelt and genuine for the entirety of the motion picture. They can all sell a joke pretty darn well, their combined innocence as they cluelessly play around with some very adult toys or are forced to overcome some exceedingly adult challenges consistently adorable.

Unfortunately, as good as they might be, much of this comedy falls a little flat. While the movie is funny, it isn’t consistently so.

As things go on the gags become increasingly tiresome as Stupnitsky and Eisenberg almost can’t help but repeat themselves.

Other than a pair of high school seniors, Hannah (Molly Gordon) and Lily (Midori Francis), the remainder of the characters rarely spring to life in a meaningful or memorable manner. This dulled my interest in Max’s pursuit to kiss his dream girl Brixlee (Millie Davis) at the party a significant amount, and if not for the way in which his friendship with Lucas and Thor was put to such surprisingly complex, intelligently multifaceted test I doubt I’d have found much here to talk approvingly about.

Thankfully, that aspect of the movie is quite good, maybe even excellent. The trio’s

continued from cover sing at the Grand Ole Opry. She believes she’s destined to be a star, everyday responsibilities like earning a steady paycheck or taking charge of her two children appearing to be not nearly as important to the young woman as they should be.

While continuing to moonlight as the primary weekend singer at a local bar (but only after the removal of her monitoring anklet), Rose also gets a job working as a maid for wealthy stay-at-home mom Susannah (Sophie Okonedo). The two strike up a sudden and somewhat strange friendship, the later woman captivated by her new cleaner’s musical talent and aspirational dreams. But Rose-Lynn hasn’t been entirely honest with her employer about her life and the myriad of things that tie her to Glasgow, and she’s worried that if she tells Susannah the truth she’ll no longer want anything to do with her.

Wild Rose is just plain lovely. Director Tom Harper (The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death) and screenwriter Nicole Taylor have crafted a spellbinding working class musical melodrama, all of it exquisitely anchored by a star-turn from Buckley that’s nothing short of glorious. Meticulously structured yet having an ephemeral eloquence that makes events feel almost as if they are happening right at the exact moment I was watching them, this movie captured my heart something fierce. As I just said, it’s nothing less than lovely, and I can’t wait to watch it again relatively soon.

It all starts with Taylor’s smart, refreshingly nuanced script. While the actual plot mechanics are familiar, and while I can’t say I found it surprising where RoseLynn’s story ended up, much like the far more male-dominated Billy Elliot or The Full Monty, the screenplay puts particular emphasis on making the characters threedimensional and the world they inhabit distinctly authentic. Taylor doesn’t shy away from the more depressive aspects of her tale, the way the daily drudgery of no longer feeling valued or of doing anything that could be construed as necessary has slowly eaten away at Susannah, or how their mother’s constant flightiness has placed her children at arm’s length, each of them wanting

to spend more time with their grandma than they do with her. As for Rose-Lynn, she’s selfish, egotistical and shortsighted, these aspects of her personality making her something of a prickly protagonist who isn’t always easy to root for.

Country music might seem at first like a strange fit for a Scottish setting, yet these songs have poignant resonance when heard within this milieu. Rose-Lynn sings with passionate intensity, bringing a striking, wearily angelic voice to the external and internal conflicts individuals like her face on an almost daily basis. Harper uses these musical interludes as a tool to augment the various thematic points Taylor hints at throughout her script, the soundtrack becoming its own distinctive character as if it also was a Glasgow resident doing what-

ever they could to make ends meet without losing those idiosyncratic quirks making them unique.

Buckley is magnificent. After making a strong impression in Michael Pearce’s Beast and delivering memorable performances in the BBC’s “War & Peace” miniseries (also directed by Harper) and in this year’s stunning HBO epic “Chernobyl,” the young actress is at the height of her powers in this. She’s unforgettable as Rose-Lynn, fearlessly playing up the singer’s uglier aspects while at the same time giving her a haunted, melancholic depth that brings stirring context to her various decisions and actions no matter how head-scratching they sometimes can be. I was blown away by her, Buckley’s tour de force virtuosity keeping my eyes glued to the screen.

Again, I can’t say there are a lot of surprises. Additionally, as superb as both Walters and Okonedo are, they equally aren’t given enough opportunity to do anything with their respective characters that isn’t readily anticipated. But I like the resilience of this movie, and I was constantly moved by just how often the filmmakers refused to bow to convention or resort to schmaltzy platitudes in order to pull a couple of inorganic tears from their viewing audience.

Wild Rose is a universally aspirational story of retaining one’s individuality in the face of societal roadblocks that prefer conformity and the status quo over anything unique, its songs of faith, family and friendship worth singing along with.

one of their best employees, his mother Noor (Meera Ganatra) currently working herself to the bone doing laundry out of the house in order to keep some form of income coming in. Javed writes poetry, stories and song lyrics in the privacy of his room, dreaming of a world where he can have a future as a journalist and an author and not one where he is feeling the pressure to follow an alternative, more economically fruitful career path.

Things begin to change when his work catches the eye of his English Lit teacher Ms. Clay (Hayley Atwell). They shift even more when he is introduced by fellow student Roops (Aaron Phagura) to the music of New Jersey icon Bruce Springsteen.

Suddenly Javed is stirred to achieve the impossible. He begins writing like a man possessed, even managing to get a few articles published in the local newspaper where he ends up securing a position that’s more or less a glorified unpaid internship.

But Javed’s battle of wills with his dad remains an oppressive constant, the two having so much trouble seeing eye-to-eye

it’s an actual question as to whether or not they will still have any sort of relationship the moment the teen graduates and heads off for university.

Based on the memoir Greetings from Bury Park: Race, Religion and Rock N’ Roll by journalist Sarfraz Manzoor, and inspired by Bruce Springsteen’s music, writer/director Gurinder Chadha’s Blinded by the Light is her best film since her sensational 2002 gem Bend It Like Beckham.

Featuring a wonderful central performance from newcomer Kalra and dynamic supporting turns from Ghir, Ganatra, Phagura and Nell Williams (as Javed’s classmate and friend Eliza), this movie is consistently terrific. It is a rousing working-class drama that deals with a myriad of complex issues and themes with creatively multifaceted vigor, all of it scored to Springsteen’s songs in ways that prove to be increasingly imaginative as events progress.

It’s kind of incredible all of this works as well as it does. The plot doesn’t go anywhere surprising. How Javed’s friendships with Shoop and Nell evolve follows a fairly standard template. As for the relationship between the teen and his father, there’s nothing shocking about that, either. Their face-off is a tried and true aspect of stories like these that goes back practically to cinema’s silent age, immigrant tales of parents having to deal with a changing world while their children pursue dreams outside of what up to then had been the standard norm not exactly original.

But it’s authentic. And it’s genuine. And it happens time and time again throughout history. That’s why stories like these, especially when they’re as well-told as this one is, almost always end up being compelling.

They cross generational, racial and gender lines in ways that make them affectingly universal, the emotional truths sitting at

their centers easy to embrace no matter what the viewer’s individual background might end up proving to be.

Chadha does an amazing job developing this relationship between father and son.

Racial tensions, economic anxieties, societal expectations and economic realities all play a part in how Javed and Malik communicate with one another. Their generational divide isn’t a fantasy, but it pales in comparison to many of these other aspects of life both men are trying to deal with in the best way each knows how. They are so blinded by the inequities weighing them down they find it difficult to embrace the commonalities that link them in ways that go way beyond family and genetics. Veteran character actor Ghir is particularly excellent, adding a layer of world-weary pathos that’s coupled with a stalwart resilience that helps make Malik a stoic, authoritative figure whose personal setbacks have only strengthened his resolve as far as it comes to his children achieving more from their lives than he feels he has.

The relationship between Javed and his former – or still current; it’s never entirely clear – best friend and neighbor Matt (Dean-Charles Chapman) isn’t handled all that well, their constantly shifting relationship shoehorned into the proceedings in a rather slapdash manner. Some of the musical transitions are also inelegantly forced into the story, these 1980s-style John Hughes-type interludes noticeably breaking the innate realism of Javed’s overall journey a significant amount.

But not fatalistically so. Springsteen’s songs are utilized magnificently the majority of the time, the artist’s lyrics infusing things with a peppy urgency that suits Javed’s world nicely. The intransigent realities of working class American life Springsteen sings so passionately about fit

into Thatcher-era Great Britain with energetic forcefulness, and it’s easy to see how this bright, industrious son of Pakistani immigrants would respond to each song so personally. His obsession with Springsteen fuels his journalistic desires, the young man discovering a sense of urgency bubbling within his core that makes him believe anything is possible as long as he’s willing to work hard enough to achieve it.

What’s great about this is that Chadha doesn’t shy away from showing how this obsession, so positive an influence on Javed’s life in so many different ways, also inadvertently makes him more than a tad selfish. While a little bit of egocentricity can be a good thing, too much of it can fundamentally alter one’s relationships with friends and family in ways that are devastatingly significant and potentially catastrophic. This is an unexpected hurdle Javed needs to overcome, and while the answer to the question as to whether or not he will do so is obvious, there is so much joy to be found in watching him do it the delicate tears that were streaming down my face during the climax were undeniably more than welcome.

It is almost as if the movie’s more noticeable imperfections only end up making the feature as a whole even more infectiously intoxicating. Chadha strums the heartstrings with fervent gusto, the talented filmmaker delivering humanistic melodies that are both period-specific and yet also indescribably timeless in their universal appeal in the same tuneful breath. Blinded by the Light is a musical celebration of life, family, friendship and love, the song it sings as memorably pure and as hauntingly electrifying as any of the ones Springsteen himself has written and performed throughout his illustrious career.

Second Angry Birds an animated absurdity

I disliked 2016’s The Angry Birds Movie so much I didn’t even both writing a review for it. As I had watched it on my own time I just didn’t have the energy to put my overall disgust of the animated comedy into words. There wasn’t a reason to do so, and as the film was only a moderate box office success (just barely clearing $100-million in domestic ticket sales) I never anticipated there would be a sequel, and as such worked at forgetting about it entirely because letting it take up valuable space in my memory felt rather pointless.

Yet here we are all the same, The Angry Birds Movie 2 releasing into theatres around the globe this very weekend.

Happily, I did not loathe this sequel nearly as much as I did its predecessor. There’s some inventively funny stuff along with a couple of ingenious visual flourishes this time around, and I can’t say this endeavor taxed my patience as I sat there through all 96 minutes of it in any noticeable way.

None of which means I liked the film. None of which means I’m going to be recommending anyone take the time to go and see it for themselves. I’m just saying I didn’t want to burn my eyes out of their sockets after watching it like I did when I finished with the first one, and as positives go that’s pretty much the best I’ve got.

After helping save Bird Island and all of its eggs from Piggy Island’s monarch Leonard (voiced by Bill Hader), perpetually angry Red (Jason Sudeikis) and his pals Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb (Danny McBride) are considered community heroes. Now all they have to deal with are the series of crazy pranks the two islands catapult back and forth between one another, Red and Leonard playing a continual game of one-upmanship that’s as silly as it is pointless. But after both communities are struck with giant balls of ice it becomes apparent there is a new threat to Bird and Piggy way of life. Eagle Island has awoken from its long dormancy, its ruler Zeta (Leslie Jones) intent on taking over control of Bird Island and Piggy Island for reasons entirely her own.

To save Bird and Piggy kind alike, Red and Leonard join forces to stop Zeta from going through with her dastardly plan at island domination. They’ve formed a super-team made up of Chuck, his whipsmart sister Silver (Rachel Bloom), Bomb, Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage), Leonard’s assistant Courtney (Awkwafina) and pig scientist Gary (Sterling K. Brown), and together they’ll secretly head to Eagle Island and destroy their ice canon superweapon. Through it all they’ll battle various internal demons, Red in particular, everyone learning something new about themselves as their infiltration mission progresses towards an explosive conclusion.

As much plot as that sounds like, that still doesn’t mean this sequel spends a lot of time focusing too intently upon it. There are frequent interludes involving the inhabitants of Bird Island or Eagle Island where all sorts of peculiarities happen, while there’s also a key subplot focusing entirely upon a trio of bird chicks trying to recover some eggs they’ve inadvertently allowed to float away into the center of the ocean. It all ends up playing like a series of vaguely and whimsically interconnected comedic vignettes, each of them so absurdly strange and eccentric it’s practically impossible not to find at least some of them worthy of a chuckle or two.

Other than that, I guess I should mention how, once again, the filmmakers have assembled one of the more impressive vocal casts that’s ever been involved with an animated motion picture. In addition to those already mentioned, the actors appearing here who have at least one line of dialogue include Tiffany Haddish, Eugenio Derbez, Pete Davidson, Tony Hale, Dove Cameron, Brooklynn Prince, Nicki Minaj, Lil Rel Howery and Maya Rudolph. I can’t say all of them make an impression, but that they are all part of this sure does make sitting through the end credits interesting, discovering who voiced which minor character admittedly a wee bit of fun.

I can easily see how younger kids are going to love this sequel. I can also see how most parents who watch it with them will chortle just enough to feel like their time sitting in the theatre hasn’t been ill-spent.

For me, though, while The Angry Birds Movie 2 is a vast improvement over its predecessor, and while I did laugh on more than one occasion, this is still one franchise that still has a long way to go if it is ever going to win me over. This sequel doesn’t lay an egg but it’s still plenty scrambled, and as such ends up being one goofy comedic venture I have no intention of wasting any more of my time talking about.

Additionally, unlike the aforementioned Superbad, 2013’s The To-Do List or this past summer’s far superior Booksmart (still my favorite 2019 theatrical release), there’s just not enough thematically bubbling underneath the surface to make any of this ascend to a level beyond that of the readily anticipated.

Readily anticipated, save for that aforementioned progression of the trio’s friendship. That is kind of remarkable, and it’s possible because of that, and also in large part thanks to Tremblay, Williams and Noon, this one might grow on me more over time. But as things sit right now I’m almost indifferent to this comedy, and as superb as the three boys are, and as warmhearted and cleverly sentimental as things prove to be, I’m having trouble cheerleading in support of this film nearly as much as part of me feels like I should be. There are laughs to be found, no question, and there’s no doubt others will find a lot of this to be downright hysterical. I’m just not part of the camp that is willing to add my support to a statement which would state that to be the case, and while Good Boys is pretty darn far from being a bad movie, that still doesn’t mean I’m personally interested in watching it again myself anytime soon.

friendship is meticulously developed with a thoughtful grace that’s touching. Each kid ends up learning a great deal about themselves and what they are just beginning to understand what they want out of life as this insane day of bad behavior transitions into night, their individual epiphanies building to a place of introspective catharsis that moved me in ways I never imagined they were going to. Stupnitsky and Eisenberg have more to say about childhood friendships than initially meets the eye, the raw candor of the revelations they present all ones I couldn’t help but respond positively to.

Not that I can say this was enough. The humor just isn’t strong enough to carry the film through to its end, and even though the filmmakers have peppered the cast with a lot of recognizable comedic faces (most notably Will Forte as Max’s father), only Lil Rel Howery and Retta as Lucas’ parents make any sort of lasting impression.

The rest just pop in and out for seemingly little to no reason at all, and other than the fact they are likely friends with producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, it’s hard to imagine what drew any of them to this proj-
