“We feel we have captured the tension, the drama, and the triumph of the American LGBTQ military experience,” said Emery Wager, co-author of Glorious.

The musical theatre drama Glorious depicts the lives of an experimental all-Gay US military unit established in response to the controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. This unit embarks on a journey of lead-

ership and self-understanding, as they forge the bonds of friendship and teamwork in the context of military mission and purpose.

The compelling music and lyrics were written by co-author Jason Spears of Seattle.

Songs from Glorious will debut on Saturday, August 3, at the Ballard Commons Event Space (5601 22nd Ave NW) in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, across the

street from the Ballard Branch Library and Ballard Commons Park.

This rooftop setting will enhance the combination of party, fundraiser, and concert, in the exhilarating tradition of original musical theater.

Doors open at 7:00pm, and the show starts at 8:00pm. Tickets range from $25 to $5,000 for patrons of the arts. All pro-

ceeds from the event after expenses will be put towards a workshop production to take place in 2020.

No right answers

Filmmaker Lulu Wang on finding universal truth inside a family’s lie with The Farewell

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE FAREWELL Now playing Since debuting her film at Sundance earlier this year, The Farewell writer/director Lulu Wang has been on something of an adrenaline-fueled whirlwind rollercoaster ride. An obvious labor of love, the filmmaker based the story for her sophomore feature-length effort on an event from her own life. That it has struck such a positive chord, that the motion picture has generated an outpouring of affection from critics and audiences alike, all of that has meant something distinctly personal to Wang, and she doesn’t take a single one of these responses for granted.

“Before we premiered at Sundance, I thought, well, people can’t hate it, right?” asks the director with a self-effacing chuckle. “I mean, what kind of terrible person would hate this movie that I made as a tribute to my grandmother? I really felt like I put my heart into it. But I [did] brace myself because you never know in this industry. I was like, whatever people say, I’m going to be okay with it. But, yeah, I definitely didn’t expect this kind of a reaction.”

The Farewell is the story of ChineseAmerican Billi (Awkwafina). An unemployed writer living in New York City, she is suddenly left shell-shocked when her parents Haiyan (Tzi Ma) and Jian (Diana Lin) call to inform her that her beloved grandmother Nai Nai (Zhao Shuzhen) likely only has a few more weeks to live. Additionally, per Chinese tradition they’re not revealing the diagnosis to the old woman. Instead, they’ve plotted a fake wedding involving one of Billi’s cousins so the entire family can get together for a reunion, and they’re not entirely sure they want their daughter to attend as they fear her American distaste for their plan will lead her to reveal their ruse to Nai Nai. Along with Silver Screen Riot editor Matt Oakes, I had the distinct pleasure to sit down with Wang a few short hours before The Farewell would screen as the closing night attraction at the Seattle International Film Festival. It was a friendly conversation, one that involved several important plot points that could be construed as spoilers, most of which I’m going to try to keep from revealing here. In the end, the three of us primarily focused on the various themes that make up the story the director is telling and how she was able to make them so culturally-specific and yet so universally accessible at the exact same time. Here are some of the edited excerpts from our much, much too short round table conversation: Question: I was curious. When you do write something so personal, how do you balance telling an accurate and truthful story with also making sure that the fictionalized elements are still authentic to you, your family and your story?

Lulu Wang: I think that I just asked myself what is the film about. It’s about how different members of a family grieve and their relationships to [this] impending death. But it is also this lie. I just try to keep those relationships, like the relationship to grandma and their relationship to death and her impending death, authentic. What do we need to know about these characters to understand why they feel the way they do?

For example, with dad and uncle, their guilt. Part of losing [Nai Nai] is also to grapple with the guilt that they haven’t been around. That they left. I really tried to stay true [to our family’s story]. Whereas certain facts, like when they go to the hospital or the chronological sequence of events, none of that is as important. The truth of our family’s story and how we each dealt with this situation was.

Question: Is it okay to lie for the greater good?

Lulu Wang: I don’t have an answer to that. I don’t think the movie does, either.

I didn’t make the movie to necessarily answer that question. I made the movie to explore the different sides of the situation, to show that there are different perspectives and it isn’t about having one answer.

Question: You took the words right out

of my mouth. There is no clear-cut answer.

But I am curious, how do you stand on this family secret now?

Lulu Wang: I think that I stand where I kind of always have. I don’t know what’s right and what’s wrong. I think that every situation is different. Every family is different. I don’t think that I have a clearer answer now than I did back then. If I was the one making those choices [to lie]? I don’t think

that the movie is about that. I think so much of life is about the gray zone and trying to grapple with it, trying to let go of our need for answers. I don’t know if lying for the greater good is right. I don’t know if this lie was right. I do know that I thought that it was wrong [at the time].

But this lie has enabled me to make this movie. Not only that, but the lie has enabled me to go back to China and spend three

months [in my grandmother’s] hometown.

I mean, never in my life did I ever think that [my family] would actually be able to be on my movie set and watch me do what I do. I didn’t even know if I would ever make movies, much less have my [family] there to witness it.

So, I don’t think that when I was back in 2013 trying to stop the lie from happening I could’ve imagined what it would lead to. I think that says so much about how life works. We try to control things. Sometimes the universe has other plans.

Question: How do you distill decades of family history down to fit it all into a feature-length running time?

Lulu Wang: It was challenging because there’s a lot about my family that I would have loved to include. There are so many different sides. Like my father is a diplomat and he lived in the Soviet Union for many, many years before he met my mother. He was once entrapped by the KGB. None of that is in this movie.

I was like, should it be? But it just didn’t belong. Instead, in this movie he’s in his underwear and he’s drunk and he’s being rolled around on the bed. How do I explain that to my father? How do I tell him we’re not going to show these amazing life accomplishments, but instead we’re going to show that [he gets] drunk and wears red underwear? [laughs] I had to separate [the script] from my family. These are characters that serve a story. I really focused on what the story was about, which is how people deal with grief differently, so the fact that he’s a diplomat doesn’t really come into play. But the fact he left China when he was in his 30s, immigrated, and hasn’t been around is important to how he’s dealing with this grief now.

Question: How hard was it for you to cast somebody who is essentially playing you in this story? When did you know this person was Awkwafina?

Lulu Wang: I knew it was Awkwafina as soon as she sent in a selfie. [laughs] She and I met for coffee, and I felt like she was a very unconventional choice for the role. When my producers first brought her up, I was like, Awkwafina? First of all, it’s like a rapper name. Second of all, she hadn’t done Crazy Rich Asians or Ocean’s Eight. I knew of her from her music videos.

I was like, the girl who did “My Vag”? This is who you’re bringing as the dramatic lead of the movie? And [the producers] were like, just meet with her. She loves the script.

She feels very personally connected to it.

When I saw her audition tape is when I knew because she just wasn’t even acting. She embodied [Billi] in such a quiet way and had all of the emotions on her face. It was actually in her moments of stillness and silence that I knew that she was the one for this role.

Throughout this movie, Billi isn’t able to speak her mind, and so often it’s about seeing the conflict in her face, her internal conflict.

Awkwafina was able to do that so well.

I think that we’re very different. I think that we’re more different than alike, so in casting her, I said, “You’re not playing me, so don’t try to mimic my behavior or the way I speak or anything like that.” I didn’t want Billi to feel like an impression. But I do think that we’ve had some similar experiences. Growing up Asian-American and female in this country. We both studied abroad in Beijing. But aside from that we’re quite different.

I asked Nora, which is Awkwafina’s real name, I asked her to bring “Nora” along.

Awkwafina, in many ways, is a character that she’s created, a stage name. I said, “Forget about Awkwafina. Bring Nora along.” Losing her mother at four-yearsold. Being raised by her grandmother. The thought of potentially losing her one day. I asked her to put herself in the shoes of this character and go on the journey, and I think that’s how we were both able to bring our own experiences to the character.

Question: At the end of the day, after The Farewell gets off the festival circuit and general audiences get their chance to take a look at the film, what do you hope they’re talking about?

Lulu Wang: I hope that they’re just talking about how important it is to have an open mind. So often there are things about other cultures that we don’t even think to consider. I think so many people going into the movie might feel one way, and feel very strongly that way. By the end of the movie, it’s not that I hope the movie changes their mind, but I hope that it at least puts a question mark there. That they’re saying, maybe I don’t know everything, and maybe that’s not the point.

have decided not to inform the old woman that she only has a few more weeks to live.

They have plotted a wedding of one of Billi’s cousins instead, an event that allows for a valid reason for the family to get together for a reunion. But knowing how angry this lie makes their daughter they urge her to stay in the United States and not attend the gathering, both parents worried she’ll spoil the ruse and tell Nai Nai what is going on.

Based on a true story chronicling an actual family event centered around a very real lie, writer/director Lulu Wang’s (Posthumous) movingly emotional The Farewell is going to go down as one of 2019’s best films.

An achingly honest character study that isn’t afraid to intermix laughter and tears in almost equal measure, the movie is an introspective experience that feels both markedly tied to its cultural roots yet also in the same breath is cathartically universal in the dynamic magnitude of its overarching themes. It is a motion picture that only gets better the more one ponders, debates and analyzes all of its various layers, Wang delivering a pitch-perfect melodrama that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about in the almost two full months since I first watched it.

Part of me wants to just leave things there. This is the type of cinematic sensation I want potential viewers to know as little about as possible before they enter the theatre. Even though Wang doesn’t do anything too extreme or stage events in a manner where the imaginatively unconventional might transpire, there is still a magnetic, intensely meditative creativity to the presentation of her narrative that I think is consistently fascinating. This allows emotional nuances fueling the story to come remarkably close to taking on a uniquely idiosyncratic life of their own, magnifying the inherent power of the situation Billi finds herself suddenly in as she sits at the center of an increasingly thoughtful and self-reflective ruse.

I loved Awkwafina in Ocean’s Eight. I thought she came perilously close to stealing Crazy Rich Asians from her equally outstanding co-stars even though her character was really nothing more than

wisecracking comic relief. But none of that means I was prepared for the magnificence of her performance as Billi. Wang has gifted her with a role that swings from broad comedy to unapologetic melodrama to all the many gradations in-between at the drop of the hat. There is no telling what this character is going to do or what she will end up feeling from one second to the next, Awkwafina standing on the edge of a razor as she navigates the ins and outs of this subtly complex scenario. Her grace under this sort of emotive pressure is extraordinary, and almost from the first frame she slips inside Billi’s skin to the point the actress comes amazingly close to disappearing entirely inside the role.

Equally outstanding is Shuzhen, and I feel like I could have watched an entire film of just her wandering around her Chinese village interacting with various neighbors and connecting with members of her family much in the same way I swooned over Edward Yang’s Yi Yi or Zhang Yimou’s Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles. The silent intimacy of her performance speaks volumes even though the actress herself says precious little, her chemistry with Awkwafina particularly stunning in its quietly impassioned specificity. Nai Nai feels like one of those characters that on paper it’s easy to believe almost anyone could portray only for Shuzhen to show the fallacy of those preconceptions with the expansive majesty of a timeless performance worthy of end-of-year award consideration.

Wang knows what she is doing behind the camera. Her technical team is aces across the board, cinematographer Anna Franquesa Solano and editors Matt Friedman and Michael Taylor particularly worthy of praise. The director never forgets to put her characters first, weaving in laughter, heartache, euphoria and oceans of tears with a genuine artistry that is never anything less than authentic. She shows how “melodrama” isn’t a bad word, her ability to weave so many dissimilar emotional cadences inside her rich, distinctly personal tapestry beyond magical. I’ll say it again: The Farewell is one of the best films of 2019. Heck, it might even be one of the best of the entire decade.

Navigating from a personal point of view

Marc Maron on comedy, podcasts, politics and making Lynn Shelton’s Sword of Trust

He started his career at the fabled Comedy Store in Los Angeles before quickly moving to New York City. After unsuccessfully auditioning for “Saturday Night Live,” he still managed to catch the eye of David Letterman, becoming a frequent guest on his late night talk show. He has appeared on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” over 40 times, hosted “Comedy Central’s Short Attention Span Theater,” did voiceover work on “Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist,” could be seen angrily screaming at the band Stillwater as they drove away in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous and was regular on left-wing radio network Air America for over five years in the 2000s.

In 2009 Maron began hosting the podcast “WTF with Marc Maron” where it almost instantaneously became a giant smash. Interviewing guests out of his garage in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, his show has included a variety of eclectic guests, including a surprise visit by President Barak Obama in 2015. The comedian also starred in the hit television series “Maron” for IFC television where he portrayed a fictional version of himself, has written (or co-written) three best-selling books, released five comedy albums and recorded six comedy specials, all the while continuing to perform to soldout audiences throughout the world. Since 2017 he has also played a central role in the Netflix ladies wrestling series “GLOW,” receiving a Screen Actors Guild nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series in 2018.

Now Maron takes the starring role in writer/director Lynn Shelton’s (Your Sister’s Sister) latest ensemble comedic endeavor Sword of Trust. Playing Alabama pawn shop owner Mel, the character finds himself in the center of a madcap bit of lunacy involving a Civil War-era sword that might just prove that the South really won and a masterful historical cover-up has prevented the world from knowing the truth for over 100 years. Maron is joined in the film by Michaela Watkins, Jillian Bell and Jon Bass, the four of them given ample freedom by Shelton to improvise as they worked together to bring this eccentric little heartfelt gem to life.

The opening night feature at this year’s Seattle International Film Festival, I had the good fortune to sit down with Maron just a few hours before his motion picture’s gala premiere. Here are some edited excerpts from our wide-ranging conversation: Sara Michelle Fetters: You’ve performed a number of times in Seattle. You actually have a performance at the Moore Theatre on September 7.

Marc Maron: I love Seattle. I’ve been coming here since the early ’90s. I was married to a woman from Seattle for a little while. Seattle has always been great to me.

Sara Michelle Fetters: But this time you’re coming to Seattle to premiere a movie that you just so happen to be the star of. I imagine that’s something of a change.

What’s this feel like?

Marc Maron: I honestly don’t know.

I’ve never had anything like this happen.

I’ve never been in a movie like this. We premiered it at South by Southwest and I’ve never seen myself like this. I’ve seen myself do so much, you know, but being up on a screen in front of a live audience is pretty exciting. So, it’s exciting. I’m excited to see the film again. And Lynn’s from Seattle. So that makes it even more exciting.

Sara Michelle Fetters: What is it about Lynn Shelton that makes her so great to work with?

Marc Maron: She did my podcast. I’ve watched many of her movies. She directed a few episodes of my show, “Maron”, on IFC. We’ve sort of built a relationship over the years. She’s very good at understanding me.

Lynn just has a good sense of who I am. She’s a fan who seems to like to work with me. So I trust her. Her instincts around almost everything I do as an actor, and as a comic, she just gets what it is I want to do.

That led to this collaboration. Additionally, we’re writing a script together right now and she directed my last stand-up special.

We just have this symbiotic relationship creatively. It’s great.

Sara Michelle Fetters: When you read the script, what jumped out at you in regards to Mel? Marc Maron: We had been working on a movie together that we were going to make but hadn’t finished it. During that process Lynn came up with this idea and got obsessed with this idea of a pawn shop.

Once we started discussing the idea, it couldn’t just be, “this guy works at a pawn shop,” and nothing more.

We had to figure out a backstory of why we end up there at the pawn shop. What is his dynamic with Lynn’s character? He’s not a broken man, but he is a broken-hearted guy. Mel’s life didn’t really pan out the way he thought it would. But he is still getting by even if his worldview is sort of dour.

I can relate to that stuff. We created the character to fit me. It was really just a matter of finding the frequency that Mel operated on.

Sara Michelle Fetters: I like that you bring that up because, to me, as an ensemble you were all able to find a similar frequency.

Marc Maron: When you’re improvising, you can sometimes feel that in the movie. Improvising has to have an organic flow to it because every take is different, and as we’re all sort of unfolding the story together in real time this flow is important.

Everyone is also all so funny and so good.

visers. It was always surprising. The events happened in the moment and I think that you can feel that.

Early on I was concerned that we might not get it right, because once people start improvising, and you start getting laughs, it can be detrimental to the character. When everybody found their groove and started to make the characters believable, that’s when it began to click. That was where it became possible for the audience to connect and empathize with each character.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Can it feel daunting? I mean, you’re sitting there doing these scenes with actors like Michaela Watkins and Jillian Bell, fantastic improvisers who I imagine can both just fly once they get going.

Marc Maron: Yeah. You’re right. They can. They’re incredible.

I’ve worked with Michaela before. I love her. We have this very strong, very natural connection. I had never met Jillian but she was great. Michaela and Jillian worked out their dynamic with incredible clarity, and they’re both also very, very funny. They challenge you to hold your composure and not start cracking up in the middle of a scene. But they also keep things grounded and real so that can keep you from taking things too far.

Sara Michelle Fetters: And then there is your relationship with Jon Bass’ character Nathaniel in the movie.

Marc Maron: I don’t know why, but he truly annoyed me in real life. [laughs] Right when I met Jon that happened. We hung out one night and I instantly felt there was definitely a lot of truth to the dynamic between Mel and Nathaniel. We were already on the wavelength of our characters we’d be playing in the movie. I mean I like Jon, he’s a great guy, but it’s still sort of just like, stay over there on your side of the room. You’re a little annoying. [laughs] Sara Michelle Fetters: As for the movie itself, was it hard to find the emotional center of this story? I mean, it can get pretty intentionally absurd.

Marc Maron: It can. True.

I think that in the middle of the movie you start to feel like, certainly with my character, his life sort of got away from

him. He’s stuck in some way. Outside of the money, which is an obvious motivator, I think Mel responds to the idea of doing something exciting. Taking a risk and doing something a little weird. But there’s more to it than that. He wants to find out if he’s been judging all these different people correctly, He wants to throw himself into the middle of this situation because, why not? What does he have to lose?

There was that element, but there is also this sort of perverse fascination with Southern culture and Southern conspiracy theories from the perspective of an outsider who judges all of this quite harshly, probably deservedly so. To have an opportunity to get thrust into something like that was certainly part of the motivation of the character. It was also something I could relate to and tap into emotionally. It’s what made Mel fun to portray.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Same time, what was it like to be in Alabama making this movie? With your podcast, with the oftentimes political nature of your comedy, was shooting there a little strange?

Marc Maron: I don’t know. I find areas of the country like Alabama to be very charming. There’s a lot of great people there.

But the reality is, I could be shot in Alabama.

Alabama just passed a sort of theocratic draconian law [in regards to reproductive rights] that’s devastating to individual freedom. But there’s still good people down there. They’re just not running things.

It is easy to use “magical thinking” to mislead people. It’s a real problem. The fact that so many people are so willing to disregard facts, unwilling to use reason or to engage with those with different beliefs is a scary thing. The thought that people are that vulnerable to this type of stuff really makes you think. It’s unfortunate. Worse, it’s dangerous.

Sara Michelle Fetters: So what would you want to say to people who profess to believe these “alternate facts”? How do you use the truth and actual, not made up, facts to engage with them?

Marc Maron: I think that a lot of time people who are willing to do that, to let themselves believe these things, sadly

there’s really no shaking them. It’s a type of thinking that comes from confidence mixed with ignorance. But “magical thinking,” in general, is something that humans are compelled to do because things work out when you think magically about traumatic events or whatever, and whether this sort of thinking works out for darkness or whether it works out for light it is still a dangerous way of packaging in your brain a conclusive ending that can appear satisfying. But when that sort of thinking becomes dangerous to others? That’s not a good thing. Then it becomes a real problem.

Sara Michelle Fetters: As for you, personally, could you ever have imagined you’d have this wild, crazy ride of a career?

Marc Maron: Not at all. No. I never could have. At a certain point I was sort of down.

I was in trouble. But I persevered somehow.

With the podcast, I think it was my specific talent for conversation and comedy coupled

with good timing that just happened to allow things to work out. [The podcast] was an act of desperation that kind of evolved into a format that was really able to embrace everything I do, and I was able to do it on my own terms. That changed my life.

But no. I didn’t have any expectation.

My expectations are never that focused and I never intend to future think in a positive way much. But things worked out. I worked hard and, when the opportunities came, I was ready for them. I don’t think anybody’s going to begrudge me for my place in my life at this point.

Sara Michelle Fetters: But is comedy harder now? With this cultural and political climate, is it more difficult to push buttons?

Marc Maron: I can only navigate all of that from my own personal point of view, what my feelings are and how I stand in relation to those things. Instead of speaking in a general voice or writing jokes that

are detached from my experience, I try to speak from the viewpoint of my personal struggles and challenges whatever they might be. Like being a straight white male and what that means in relation to women and how we talk about things. I talk about my experience around that and usually that’s pretty funny.

But in terms of the climate, right, it is a little scary. There are people who hate you for who you are, in a general way, and they only go by their assumption about who you are without knowing anything about you.

But that goes both ways.

Fortunately, I’m not that huge a public figure or so famous where I still can’t do anything under the radar, and generally, with my comedy, I’ve developed an audience who, when they come out to see me, respect what I do in a general way.

For everyone else, I try to do comedy in a relatively diplomatic way. I think I under-

stand what’s going to trigger people one way or the other, and I try to give them a little bit of warning, when I can.

Sara Michelle Fetters: For Sword of Trust, what do you think the takeaway is?

What do you hope audiences are talking about afterward?

Marc Maron: I find that it’s a pretty ridiculous movie in some ways. But it turns out that the comedy is so effective because it’s genuine, and you can feel that there’s a subtle warmth to the whole thing. That because these characters are so real.

I do think that the story itself is compelling, and I would hope it could trigger people to think about truth versus non-truth, as well as look at the South in a different way.

But ultimately it’s sort of a sweet, funny movie about a bunch of odd characters who you do sort of connect with. You feel empathy for them. I hope audiences feel that.

SWORD OF TRUST

determined few think will change history, and they’re willing to pay handsomely in order to get their paws on them.

While maybe not quite up to the glorious heights of 2011’s Your Sister’s Sister, writer/director Shelton’s latest low-key, character-driven comedic frolic Sword of Trust is very entertaining. Co-written with “A.P. Bio” creator Mike O’Brien, the movie is an enjoyable what-if lark that has a lot more on its mind than initially appears to be the case. Anchored by a superb performance from comedian, author, podcaster and essayist Maron and featuring wonderful supporting works by all three of his primary co-stars, especially a delightfully anarchic Watkins, this is a fast-paced O. Henry meets Mark Twain meets Tom Wolfe-like absurdist lark that sent me out of the theatre smiling.

Shelton’s fable works because the characters feel real. While the situation is undeniably ludicrous, and while each individual is their own uniquely eccentric self, the emotions fueling their various actions and interactions are all entirely genuine. There is real love, affection, pathos, pain, curiosity and respect running through the lot of them, the ways they end up relating to one another, even with a handful of understandable misgivings at the start, is always nothing less than believably authentic. In spite of their obvious differences. Mel and Mary

strike up an affecting bond, the duo understanding one another in ways that dig deep and go far beyond what is being said by either of them out loud.

In a role tailor-made for his uniquely sardonic skills, Maron is wonderful. He brings a world-weary cynicism to his performance that is mixed with a buried form of emotionally naturalistic optimism I found consistently endearing. Maron says so much by doing so little, his one scene with Shelton a shattering affair where the particularities of their relationship are irrelevant and all that needs to be known passes back and forth between them silently with crushingly internalized specificity. The whole scene is an early gut-punch that sets the stage beautifully for all the surreal historical peculiarities to come, and I can’t imagine the movie would have been nearly as touching as it ultimately proves to be without him as the main character.

For me, the most interesting aspect of what Shelton and O’Brien have come up with is how their story so cleverly analyzes how conspiracy theories like the one presented here can blossom and grow even when their innate ridiculousness is obvious for everyone to see. The individuals this quartet encounter are all looking for a number of different things in their respective lives, and the idea of a Southern victory in the Civil War ends up becoming a

defining reason why their own dreams have remained unrealized. But Shelton refuses to ridicule these individuals and keeps herself from painting them as fools unworthy of redemption. Instead, she and O’Brien craft them as sad, lonely human beings Mel, Mary, Cynthia and Nathaniel can learn something about themselves from, each discovering hidden truths about their own biases, superstitions and beliefs that maybe need to be rethought once their surreal adventure to sell this sword comes to its conclusion.

Even with that being so, it isn’t like Sword of Trust ever digs as deeply as it potentially could have. The majority of its major complications are resolved rather easily, and there isn’t a lot in the way of loose ends left untethered by the time the screen fades to black. Yet it all feels honest and real even if these outcomes are hardly surprising and arguably a little too tidy. Mel learns something about resilience and hope, and the sight of him walking down the street carrying a mysterious bag of groceries is oddly comforting. I was happy to see that there were cracks lingering inside the foundation of his ingrained pessimism, his willingness to offer his silent trust to those who have not even asked for it an optimistic turn of events everyone watching the film owes it to themselves to try and emulate.

But first walks in his ex-girlfriend Deirdre (Lynn Shelton) claiming she’s finally clean and looking for money to supposedly help pay for repairs to her car so she can drive to a job interview. Yet as emotionally shattering as this encounter is, it is trumped when jittery couple Mary (Michaela Watkins) and Cynthia (Jillian Bell) enter the store carrying a perfectly preserved Civil War-era Union Army sword.

At first their transaction appears to be relatively straightforward. They’d like to pawn the sword and want to know its value.

Things don’t get strange until they attempt to explain to Mel the item’s history. In a letter given to her upon his death, Cynthia’s grandfather states the sword belonged to Union General Philip Henry Sheridan, and he gave it up to the Confederate Army when he surrendered at a heretofore unknown battle. This means the North lost the Civil War and the South, in a massive coverup, were victorious. While neither Mel, Mary, Cynthia and Nathaniel believe any of this, the sword still leads all four of them into a murky underworld of Southern conspiracy theories and the hot collector’s market for “Prover Items,” historical artifacts that a

by Sound Theatre Company and The Hansberry Project, demands attention and for every possible seat to be filled! I’m naming it an event rather than a “play” because it is a string of poetic narratives that are more like stones in a path or knots in a long rope.

It is performed here by a tightly woven team of six performers who are called upon to both intone and emote through a complex dance of emotions that taxes every person in the room. Calling something “poetic” might cause you to shy away or decide – as many decide about poetry from unfortunate exposures in schools – that this show is destined to be “boring.” That would be tragically wrong.

This is a fire-cracker of an event. It

burns like a smoldering log kicked out of the campfire, alone on the beach, left to smolder.

Four “black” actors and two “white” ones intone example after example of racist comments or snide remarks, now re-termed “microagressions.” It’s not that the impact is “micro” but it’s more the size of the comment or interaction.

This event lays out in stark relief what it feels like to receive the comments: hear the question of a cashier about whether your credit card will clear when not asking your friend the same question, see the reaction of a professional who sees you for the first time and blurts out, “I didn’t know you were black.”

A signature example of how this world society functions with racist structure is in the story of Serena Williams. To those who pay attention, the tennis world has had a very difficult relationship with a black

superstar who, if she were pale-skinned, would easily be lauded for being the best of the best against every other sport. The piece details her difficulties with umpires making calls that cost her games and penalized her for behaviors that were unnoted by many other (white) players.

But there are many other moments and examples (pictures of the black faces of Hurricane Katrina). A man is stopped by police for an unknown reason, but what he knows is that “you are not the guy and still you fit the description because there is only one guy who is always the guy fitting the description.”

Shermona Mitchell, Allyson Lee Brown, Naa Akua, Nicholas Japaul Bernard, Rebecca Cort, and Richard Sean Glen, under the direction of Jay O’Leary, execute the 70-75 minute event with precision and clarity. With incisive video projection designed by Tristan Roberson, the event is sensory overload and a battering

ram to an open heart.

If you have ever tried to put yourself into someone else’s shoes and have not been able to imagine what racism feels like, this event might help you understand. If you are a person of color, this event affirms your right to feel anger and calls out others for labeling anger as an “insane” response.

ONCE UPON A TIME continued from cover

vin Schwarzs (Al Pacino), all of his guest appearances as a villain in a string of shows like “The F.B.I.” have diminished his star appeal, and if he doesn’t shift gears soon his days as an above-the-title star will be over.

The demonstrative movie mogul wants Rick and his stunt man/chauffeur/handyman best friend Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) to head to Europe for six months and headline an Italian Spaghetti Western, stating that this could be just the jumpstart the actor needs to regain his heroic box office mojo.

That’s not really the story Quentin Tarantino is telling with his ninth effort Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, but it is the one facet of his sprawling, episodic drama that’s easiest to describe. At its heart, this movie is an elegiac character study of two forty-something friends who are both doing their best to stay true to one another while also attempting to change with the times.

They embrace certain aspects of the new cultural status quo while other facets they look upon with nothing less than obliquely bemused disdain. It’s their surreal journey through this morass of alcoholism, auteurism, drug abuse, sexuality, psychological manipulation and depression, everything culminating in a violent outburst of aggression that lays demons to rest as this very adult fairy tale ties all of its various plot strands and thematic meanderings together with fiery conviction.

It’s fascinating stuff, especially early on, and I got the feeling this was Tarantino’s

most personal script in quite some time, maybe ever. It was hard for me to feel like he wasn’t seeing himself as some sort of combination of his two leading men, that both Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth were speaking for him. There is an observational intimacy to their adventures that’s frequently riveting, each of them heading out on divergent journeys of self-discovery that allow them to look at their lives differently by the time events reach their blood-splattered climax.

Yet I cannot say all of this works particularly well. There are decidedly uncomforting aspects of the movie that hit me as being distasteful in ways that were far south of palatable. Tarantino begins things just at the point Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) has moved into Rick’s neighborhood with her new husband, Rosemary’s Baby director Roman Polanski. A hefty portion of the running time is devoted to watching her run around Los Angeles. Getting a first edition of a novel as a present for her husband. Going to a party at the Playboy Mansion. Heading to the theatre to clandestinely watch one of her first films, 1968’s Matt Helm spy comedy The Wrecking Crew with Dean Martin. Tate is a breathlessly enchanting enigma floating through this absurd little world without seemingly a single solitary care, an ocean of endless possibility metaphorically crashing right up against her front door as the young actress begins to navigate the calm seas of her career’s successful early days.

This subplot is juxtaposed against Cliff becoming enchanted with a beguiling hippie nicknamed Pussycat (Margaret Qualley) who claims to live at George Spahn’s

(Bruce Dern) movie ranch, a once busy shooting location that now sits rundown and seldom utilized what with the Western appearing to be going out of style. There’s something noticeably cult-like about the group of apparent transients the teenager is living with, and her obsession with their absent leader “Charlie” understandably creeps Cliff out a significant bit.

For a story that feels like a stylized combination of Federico Fellini’s 1963 classic 8½ and Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2014 adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s Inherent Vice, I honestly can’t say I totally get what Tarantino was going for by including the Sharon Tate subplot, especially as I just as freely state I wasn’t shocked at all the way in which the Inglourious Basterds and Pulp Fiction filmmaker put his own idiosyncratic spin on her tragedy. But how he does it just didn’t work for me. I found there to be a layer of sadism, misogyny and sexism that I could not get beyond, the level of repellent ultra-violence in my opinion not fitting the story in the same way it has in just about all of the director’s previous motion pictures (even The Hateful Eight, which I’m admittedly not a big fan of).

Even with all of that being the case, I’m still hesitant to call Tarantino’s latest a misfire. The ambiance is incredible, Robert Richardson’s (Django Unchained) masterful cinematography having an absorbingly naturalistic glow that continually drew me in. The same can be said for Barbara Ling’s (Fried Green Tomatoes) immaculate production design and Arianne Phillips’ (Nocturnal Animals) richly creative costumes.

The director’s use of music is as magnificent

as ever, while the film’s subtly impressive visual effects are so seamlessly integrated into the story they’re practically invisible.

Then there are DiCaprio and Pitt. They are outstanding. I can’t think of a better word to describe either of them. The depiction of their friendship is one of the best of its type I’ve seen in ages. It’s pure. It’s genuine. It has ups and downs. Best of all, they genuinely care about one another, and even if they don’t always know the right thing to do or the correct thing to say, they’re both still ready to assist the other no matter what the situation. Both actors mine emotive terrain that is absorbingly complex, their collective fearlessness a thing of immersive beauty.

But these two dynamic performances unfortunately do not a fully entertaining movie make. While I could watch Rick and Cliff meander and struggle and persevere and party until the cows come home, I still need more of a personal emotional investment in the proceedings for any of what they do to intimately resonate. Couple that with the film’s strange, almost callous disdain for its female characters and its overtly casual misogyny, the longer this episodic trip into the bizarre went on the less I cared to keep paying attention to anything it had to say. By the time Tarantino played fast and loose with history and ramped up his masculine Los Angeles fairy tale to bloodily gruesome new heights, Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood had pretty much lost me, and I suddenly realized this was one bit of loopy pulp fiction I could have done without.
