2020 MEN IN DANCE Festival Call for artists and early festival announcement MEN IN DANCE announces that it is now accepting submissions for its upcoming 13th Festival playing at the Erickson Theatre (1524 Harvard Ave.) on Capitol Hill in Seattle on September 25-27 and October 2-4, 2020. The deadline for submissions is April 30, 2020.

Mission Statement: MEN IN DANCE is committed to supporting and producing cutting-edge male-identifying concert dance, in all of its colors.

MEN IN DANCE welcomes choreographers of any gender to submit proposals; all performers must be male-identifying. Group pieces are encouraged, but solos, duets, etc. will be considered. Submitted pieces must be no longer than 10 minutes in length.

Selected choreographers will be programmed to show work in either the first or second program. Preference of weekend will be considered, though cannot be guaranteed. All selected choreographers will be paid a stipend of $325. The dancer stipend will be $150/dancer. At the Moore Theatre on Saturday, Mitchell came out in a Lady Gaga–inspired dress with a cape that eventually became several other looks (he explained he was going for a Transformers-inspired design).

After starting with the song “Origins of Love,” he sang several others from Hedwig, including “Wicked Little Town” and “Wig in a Box.” As wonderful as it was to hear these songs, it was just great to hear him just talk.

Mitchell told the audience the story that led him (along with Stephen Trask) to create the off-Broadway musical that spawned the film that spawned the Tony-winning hit.

His father was a US Army major general, so he grew up on a military base in Germany. Mitchell’s babysitter was a Marlene Dietrich-type who was the inspiration for the character of Hedwig. In the story, Hansel, a little German boy, is forced by his mother and her future boyfriend to get a sex change and become Hedwig.

Mitchell also told the story of having met Trask on a flight, where they were the only two not watching the in-flight movie, When Harry Met Sally.

There were some funny moments, too.

“This microphone smells like Jinkx Monsoon,” he said, referring to the RuPaul’s Drag Race winner from Seattle who memorably deep-throated the microphone when she played Hedwig at the Moore in 2013.

“Somebody FaceTime with Jinkx,” Mitchell added. “It doesn’t smell like her mouth.”

“Could be worse. Could be Dina Martina,” he cracked.

There were serious and emotional moments as well. Regarding Hansel being forced to have a sex change, Mitchell called it “a rape.”

Later, after an amazing rendition of “Midnight Radio” – with the audience singing “Lift up your hands” – Mitchell left the stage and then came back to introduce songs from his new podcast, “Anthem,” against an image of actress Glenn Close (who is in the cast of the podcast) on the cross like a messiah.

With the show going into its third hour at that point without an intermission I had had enough and left, but it was totally worth it!

The Trumpet of the Swan is a young-person tale originally written by E.B. White.

It’s the tale of a young trumpeter swan who was born unable to make swan sounds and is rendered mute until he first learns to read and write and then is provided a trumpet and learns to play so beautifully that he makes a living as an international jazz musician! (Clearly this is fantasy…)

Louis the Swan (named after Louis Armstrong) is assisted by a young boy, Sam, who starts the process of teaching Louis to read and write. After finding his trumpet voice, Louis is able to serenade his love, Serena, and live a prosperous swan life.

Noted playwright Marsha Norman adapted the story for actors and orchestra, and the music was written by Jason Robert Brown. The orchestra plays and actors narrate, and often, as in this case, puppet swans are used as props. This debuted in 2011.

Those who love musical theater know Jason Robert Brown well from his seminal musicals The Last Five Years, which is about a failed marriage told in forward time by one spouse and backward time by the other, and

13, which is an autobiographical musical about that very awkward age and is beloved by those who remember that age vividly.

In 2016, Sound Theatre Company mounted an award-winning production of his musical Parade. It’s about a notorious case in Marietta, Georgia in 1913 where a Jewish man is falsely charged with murder and then lynched by a mob.

SGN got exclusive access to JRB, as he is affectionately known in the musical theater world. Asked what might bring him out to Seattle for a high school performance, JRB answers, “I love The Trumpet of the Swan. I loved the original EB White novel, I love what Marsha Norman did with it, and I love the music I got to write for it.

“It makes me cry with happiness every time I see it or hear it or conduct it. Actually, this will be the first live performance I’ve ever seen that I’m not conducting, so I’m excited to take it in that way. That said, I wouldn’t go to just any high school. Roosevelt has an extraordinary instrumental program – I’d heard about it here in New York long before this concert came up – and I’m thrilled to get to hear those kids in action.”

And how did the composing of the piece come about? “Marsha had fallen in love with the book and had been commissioned by the Kennedy Center to create a sort of Peter and the Wolf-style piece for orchestra and narrator. She asked me to come on board and

I almost fainted because it’s so exactly the kind of thing I always wanted to do.

“Working with live musicians – and particularly BIG GROUPS OF THEM – makes me so happy, and being able to share it with family audiences is a particular pleasure. When we did the premiere at the Kennedy Center, they were selling big swan puppets in the gift shop, and I turned around at one point while I was conducting and saw about 100 kids holding their stuffed swans aloft and making them fly through the air right when Louis first takes flight. Nothing will ever top that for me.”

JRB will be performing that evening and SGN asked for a hint of what he might include. He says, “My concerts are always a mix of songs from my shows and songs from my albums, so you can expect a song from Parade sitting next to A Song About Your Gun or the opening of Honeymoon In Vegas.

I’ve got thirty years’ worth of material now and I love being able to pull from different periods of my life and see what happens when you put a song from 1995 next to a song from 2018.”

Celebrating 46 Years!

Pixar’s Onward a magical road trip of brotherly love

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer ONWARD Now playing In a quiet suburban neighborhood in the city of New Mushroom, elf Ian Lightfoot (voiced by Tom Holland) is celebrating his 16th birthday with his loving mother Laurel (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and his well-meaning oaf of an older brother Barely (Chris Pratt).

Unbeknownst to either young man, Laurel’s been secretly holding onto a present from their late father, a letter and a package that was to remain unread and unopened until this very day.

What they find is a bona fide wizard’s staff along with a mystical jewel amplifying its power. The letter also includes a spell that allows the boys to bring back their father for one whole day. When Barley shows no magical aptitude, it falls to Ian to see what he can do. But something goes wrong, and before the birthday boy can complete the spell the jewel shatters, leaving their father as nothing more than a pair of legs, his upper half sadly missing.

From there Ian and Barely head off on an epic road trip quest to get another mystical jewel so they can complete the spell before the day ends and their dad vanishes for good. Along the way there is a lot of brotherly bickering, unexpected personal revelations, heartfelt life-lessons and an encounter with a gregarious Manticore (Octavia Spencer) who instead of fighting evil with her ancient sword now runs a medieval family-friendly eatery on the outskirts of town. It’s all a bunch of colorfully anarchic, emotionally uplifting heartfelt supernatural silliness, all of which helps

make Pixar’s latest comedic adventure Onward a goofy good time I’m excited to see again.

Director Dan Scanlon (Monsters University) and co-writers Jason Headley and Keith Bunin (Horns) have posited an amusing little fairy tale world where magic is passé and modern technological advances like

cellphones, laptop computers, automobiles and airplanes have become far more convenient to utilize. It is a realm where fairies have forgotten how to fly, wear leather and ride around in motorcycle gangs. A universe where feral unicorns scrounge through the trash looking for scraps. In short, it’s a pretty gosh darn imaginative place, and it’s a pretty

safe bet kids of all shapes and sizes will look at it all in wide-eyed glee.

Does it go a lot deeper than that? No. Not really. The first half is particularly rudimentary, recalling in some ways a wacky melding of a couple of DreamWorks favorites, The Croods and The Road to El Dorado, only with a fantastically magical “World of Warcraft” (but in the modern world) twist to make things seem a bit more innovative than they actually are. The personal problems Ian and Barley work out during their time on the road are mostly rather obvious, and there were moments I started to wonder if I was watching a big budget animated Pixar spectacle or a rerun of an old episode from the first or second season of “One Tree Hill.”

Thankfully, and not unsurprisingly, Holland and Pratt are a terrific vocal pairing, the two have an engagingly comforting give-and-take that’s wonderful. The former is notably outstanding, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s current Spider-Man giving a splendid performance that’s a constant source of joy. I could feel all of Ian’s strengths, weaknesses, anxieties and aspirations throughout his and Barely’s quest to reunite their father’s legs with the upper half of his body, his heroic blossoming into a self-confident young man ready to make new friends and find his place in an everchanging world ultimately filling my heart with happiness.

There’s also a splendid subplot involving Laurel and the Manticore. The pair also hit the road, becoming fast friends, who each empowers the other to feats of greatness they didn’t believe they were capable of as they try to warn Ian and Barley of a fire-breathing menace protecting the fabled gem they’re trying to find. Louis-Dreyfus and Spencer are a charming comedic duo, and as good as they both are here, I’d just love to see them team up again in a liveaction film sometime soon.

It’s the last third where Onward truly soars. The climactic stretch of the film is lovely, and as endings go the one Scanlon and his creative team deliver is remarkably close to perfect. The animation is stunning.

The performances are exceptional. The script is honestly circumspect and empathetically aspirational. For me, this is the point where the emotions fueling Pixar’s latest finally take flight, and as such the overall impact this story ended up having upon me could be described as nothing other than magic.

and then wander around various Olympic venues and the streets of PyeongChang after her event has concluded.

Directed by Jeremy Teicher and featuring a mostly improvised script written by the filmmaker and his two stars, this is a fascinating dramatic achievement that plays a little like a cross between Before Sunrise, Once and The Cutting Edge. It’s a rambunctious independent production that has a heck of a lot more on its mind than initially meets the eye, this look behind the Olympic curtain a universally enthralling human journey where a litany of stark truths are explored with intimately empathetic understanding. [EDITOR’S NOTE: Sara Michelle Fetter’s review of Olympic Dreams appeared in the Seattle Gay News, 2/28/20 (Sec. 2, p. 7); http://www.sgn.org/ sgnnews48_09/page45.cfm] I had the opportunity to connect with Teicher to learn more about Olympic Dreams and the guerilla nature of its production. Here are some edited excerpts from our brief conversation: Sara Michelle Fetters: So. First things first. As a longtime Winter Olympics fanatic, I need to thank you. I finally feel like I now know how they somehow control the Skeleton. That’s always both fascinated and driven me crazy.

Jeremy Teicher: Ha! That’s great. I mean, absolutely, it’s what we do, show the inside world of the Olympics. [laughs] Sara Michelle Fetters: I couldn’t believe how charmed and captivated I was by this film. At what point did you and Alexi realize Olympic Dreams was going to happen? When did you know you’d actually be heading to South Korea and shooting a motion picture inside the Olympic Village?

Jeremy Teicher: We first started by getting the idea while Alexi was competing in Rio in 2016, as a long distance runner.

I was wondering if we could do something for the 2018 Winter Games when we suddenly got a good note that opened a lot of doors. The president of the IOC had seen our previous film Tracktown on an airplane and really liked it. When he looked into who we were and what we did as athletes, he ultimately invited us to do an artist-inresidence-project in PyeongChang. This

germ of an idea suddenly grew into a feature film.

Sara Michelle Fetters: As a summer Olympian, what was the transition like for Alexi to go from long-distance running to portraying a cross-country skier? What was that process like?

Jeremy Teicher: In addition to being an athlete, Alexi is also a great actor and a terrific improviser. She was able to be her character, Penelope. She wasn’t being Alexi.

However, as an athlete, there was some overlap between Alexi as an actor and Alexi as an Olympic competitor. Crosscountry skiing is an endurance sport, and it seemed the most like long distance running. She connected with some of the skiers ahead of time and was just smoking to learn the ins and outs of the sport. We also had a terrific stunt double, Anne Hart, a crosscountry skier for Team USA. Sara Michelle Fetters: How much of this did you script beforehand and how much were you, Alexi and Nick Kroll improvising while you were shooting? As you said, Alexi’s a good improviser, and we know Nick is a fantastic one.

Jeremy Teicher: We had an outline.

The arc of the story was all planned out, even the different emotional pieces within a scene. I’ve been to the Olympics before, so I knew the uncontrolled situations we would need to work around. We did as much prep as we could ahead of time and then set ourselves up to embrace the unexpected.

There were definitely times where we would see a really cool location and get out of the car and just start shooting. I would look back at the script schedule and figure out what scene we could potentially set in this cool place. After that, this was more than enough to give us the freedom to improvise.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Because of this renegade filmmaking style that filming in the Olympic Village pretty much demanded from you, it seems like you ended up wearing a heck of a lot of different hats on this film. Director. Screenwriter.

Cinematographer. Sound technician. Even Costume Designer.

Jeremy Teicher: Yeah. [laughing] I was a one-man band.

Sara Michelle Fetters: What was that like?

Jeremy Teicher: It was exhilarating.

There was a learning curve, for sure. The whole core team was Alexi, Nick and me.

Alexi and Nick would light themselves up and do their own makeup. I would prepare the camera setup and get everything set for sound.

We knew what the constraints were going to be well in advance. I worked in Los Angeles on a lot of preproduction. But there was still that learning curve in getting comfortable with the equipment and everything. Once that happened, though, it was actually incredibly freeing. There was no delay between having an idea and being able to go out at once and shoot it.

Sara Michelle Fetters: That had to be pretty freeing in some ways for all three of you I would imagine. No boundaries. No barriers.

Jeremy Teicher: I feel very grateful that I got to have this opportunity to go back to my roots at this stage in my career.

I think a lot of filmmakers didn’t have that experience of making something with their friends and a camera out in the backyard or wherever. Or when you’re in school, or something like that. To be able to go do that with collaborators like Nick and Alexi on a stage like the Olympics? That felt like a gift. It was a reconnection with that total freedom. It was incredible.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Outside of the filmmaking aspect, what is it like to be able to just wander around the Olympics like this? To be given this behind-the-curtain access so few will ever get a chance to experience for themselves?

Jeremy Teicher: Having been in Rio, I had a rough idea of what to expect. But the Winter Olympics is quite different than the summer games. I do think I was prepared to be blown away by what I saw and then to take our story and mold it around being able to take advantage of all we were experiencing.

Sometimes there was a seed of an idea and we were like, that’s pretty cool, but where can we set it so that it would be even cooler? There’s this argument piece towards the end, and I knew we wanted to set that in a really cool, dramatic place. I had a few ideas that I thought might work, but then we got to the Olympic Games and the idea of where we could possibly set this scene just grew even more amazing. I connected with this venue manager, and each place as you might imagine has its own set schedule when it is going to be in use.

Because I’d made that connection, we had access to that schedule. We were in touch throughout. I learned that the Olym-

pic Stadium used for Opening and Closing Ceremonies was going to be sitting empty on a particular day and I knew immediately this scene just had to happen there.

And that was what it was like. Sometimes it was overwhelming in all the best of ways.

There was just so much possibility. When you’re just in the zone and in there with your camera, you have to take the opportunity to trust your eye as a filmmaker. I tried to capture being there as best I could.

Sara Michelle Fetters: What point did Nick become involved with the project and what do you feel like he brought to the project?

Jeremy Teicher: Nick was a third of our team. He brought so much to the project. We were looking for an actor who not only could be this character, but also someone who would be comfortable being on a three-person crew running around the Olympic Village having this guerrilla filmmaking-style experience. We needed someone who could think like a producer. Nick really brought all of that. Coming from the improv and standup world, he was just so great to have as a part of our team. He fit in right away. We were all very proactive collaborators.

There were moments when Nick would see a cool place and he would be like, “Let’s shoot something over there!” It never felt like we were having to shelter him from the intensity of the production. He fully embraced all of it.

While we were still casting, and we knew we had this pretty crazy set of requirements that we needed any actor who was going to play Ezra, and Nick’s agent was immediately like, he is your guy. He is 100% your guy. And he was right. After our first meeting, I knew right away that was true.

Sara Michelle Fetters: You’ve got a lot of athletes in the film, most of them in brief cameos but a few around for a significant amount of time. What was their response to your film?

Jeremy Teicher: It’s been wonderful.

Watching NBC reruns doesn’t capture what it is like to be a part of the Olympics. The experience of actually being an athlete.

To be able to hear from people who were in PyeongChang and competed, to be able to realistically show what their experience was like, this was personally fulfilling.

We were the first fictional film to ever have access to the places that we could go, but it’s still the Olympics, so there’s always

a fair share of camera crews constantly running around filming stuff. Because of that, we were actually able to blend in pretty easily, and after a while I think the athletes just got used to our presence. Occasionally people would also recognize Nick and ask us what was going on. Once they learned that we were there shooting a movie, I don’t think they could really fully wrap their minds around it, because you don’t think of shooting a movie with a three-person team.

Alexi would often start conversations with athletes. We have a lot of athletes who are actors in the film, pretty much playing themselves, so we would strike up conversations with people who didn’t look like they were too busy at the moment. There’s a lot of down time for athletes in the Olympic Village, whether it’s after their compe-

tition or if they are between competitions.

Because of that, we would often find people who were just excited to be part of something fun and unique.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Alexi has this line about halfway through that I don’t want to ruin, but it’s the core scene between Penelope and Ezra where she talks so matter-of-factly about the differences between goals and wants. It’s a pretty incredible moment, and really speaks to a certain type of mentality that I think is universal whether or not one is an athlete.

Jeremy Teicher: It’s pretty great. It’s a good example of Penelope being so razorfocused on a goal that she is lost after her event has ended versus Ezra who is never quite fully able to commit to a goal but has a lot of wants that he constantly dreams

about. That’s a dynamic that we wanted to play with. You don’t have to be an Olympian to identify with Alexi’s character. For that matter, you don’t have to be a dentist to relate with Nick’s. For me, I feel this kind of questioning between the two of them is about what’s next, about what it is like to feel lost.

Even though the story is about an Olympian, which is an ultra-rare achievement to be certain, I think that this story is relatable to just about everyone, that people everywhere can take away something from it. I think we all have a little bit of Penelope and a little bit of Ezra in us.

Sara Michelle Fetters: With that in mind, where do you go next? What is the next goal on your checklist?

Jeremy Teicher: We are just starting to put together the coalition to get a new

movie made. Alexi also has a book coming out in August, a memoir. As a filmmaker, though, you always have a lot of irons in the fire. I can’t say exactly what will be next but we have a lot of cool stuff that we are currently cooking.

Sara Michelle Fetters: As for general audiences, what do you want them to take away from Olympic Dreams? What do you hope they’re talking about?

Jeremy Teicher: I feel like the glitziest thing is that people will get a chance to see inside the Olympic Village and get a feel for the athlete experience like nothing ever before. The IOC has never allowed anything like this, and that’s pretty incredible. It’s just such a rare glimpse inside this world.

INVISIBLE MAN continued from cover

preneur boyfriend Adrian Griffin’s (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) secluded estate in one piece.

She’s shaken. She’s emotionally unstable. She has trouble leaving her good friend James Lanier’s (Aldis Hodge), a devoted single father and a veteran detective working for the San Francisco police department, house to go check the morning mail. But for the first time in ages Cecilia is starting to feel safe, and that’s all that truly matters.

Considering how confidently domineering he was, Cecilia is shocked to learn of Adrian’s suicide. Things get even stranger after she meets with his estranged lawyer brother Tom (Michael Dorman). He informs Cecilia that Adrian’s left her a fortune, a financial windfall to be deposited in monthly $100,000 installments as long as a few simple stipulations are met. She can’t be charged with a felony. She can’t be ruled mentally incompetent. Other than that, Cecilia’s got nothing to worry about, Adrian’s death officially giving her license to retake control of her life.

With that, writer/director Leigh Whannell’s (Upgrade) ingenious, masterfully plotted The Invisible Man is off to the races.

While the germinating seeds of both H.G. Wells’ original novel and James Whale’s timeless 1933 masterpiece are present, this is a fresh take on the story, one that feels bracingly topical in all the right ways. Even with the violence, even with the gore, even with the filmmaker’s background scripting horror favorites like Saw, Dead Silence and Insidious, there is little that is sensationalistic about his treatment of the material or his characters.

Whannell has gone back to basics crafting a grounded, deeply unsettling character-driven thriller. His film remembers that this is Cecilia’s story. She is the focal point.

She is the one dealing with demons brought on by psychological and physical abuse.

Her paranoia is valid, all of which makes the deaf ears listening to her pleas for help and understanding all the more heartbreakingly maddening. Cecilia knows what abusive controlling violence looks like even when it’s invisible to the naked eye because she’s experienced it first-hand, and to know the truth while those you care about and trust look on with disbelief is more than enough to drive even the most stable of individuals right to the doorstep of unrestrained psychosis.

This is what Whannell has done with Wells source material in a nutshell. By going in this direction, he transposes the madness from the person who has managed to make themselves invisible straight onto the shoulders of those they’ve decided

continued from page 5 mance from star Steve Coogan I can’t say I found a ton I liked about this one. As wellintentioned and pointedly prescient as the central scenario is, sad to say this is one film that left me cold.

The story is relatively straightforward.

After a public inquiry into his financial dealings by British politicians goes horrifically wrong, self-made retail fashion billionaire Sir Richard McCreadie (Coogan) looks to rehabilitate his reputation by holding a massive, star-studded 60th birthday on the Greek island of Mykonos. There to chronicle things is his nebbish biographer Nick (David Mitchell), the author realizing there’s more to this man’s complicated story than initially meets the eye, and not a heck of a lot of it is what most would consider positive.

With the party as the central cog around which the remainder of the narrative revolves, Winterbottom weaves a nonlinear story of wealth inequality, banking irregularities, political double-dealing, immigration issues and the ugly underground world of worker mistreatment and abuse the fashion industry would rather the general public never see. We get glimpses of McCreadie as

to torment with their transparent gifts. It’s a fascinating juxtaposition, and by making this Cecilia’s narrative Whannell has reinvigorated the material. The titular character is an enigma, how they’ve come by such a power and what becoming impossible to see by the naked eye has done to them a purposefully vexing conundrum.

I love that about the film. By taking this approach Cecilia’s journey has real resonance and staying power. It also allows Whannell to tackle questions about power, sexism, misogyny and privilege in a sneaky and subtle manner that caught me initially unaware. There is true terror in watching this woman’s world fall apart brick by brick thanks to an unseen force she can’t hope to stop without the assistance and aid of those closest to her. The loneliness, the paralyzing self-doubt, the crushing belief that no one will believe what you have to say, the director explores all of this and more, giving his nifty little thriller an extra layer of gravitas that’s exhilarating.

Not that Whannell skimps on the thrills and chills just to make a few socially relevant cultural observations. Just the opposite. Once Adrian’s suicide is announced things kick into high gear. The director’s utilization of his frame is masterful

and recalls the classics of Dario Argento, Mario Bava, Jacques Tourneur and Fritz Lang. Cinematographer Stefan Duscio (Jungle) utilizes a series of sly, shrewdly nimble elongated takes where his camera glides back and forth analyzing every inch of whichever room Cecilia might be in at any given moment. This visual uncertainty is cunningly discombobulating, the rising tension present throughout the film in large part due all thanks to this.

Sometimes things move, wobble or shift in some small, imperceptible way. Other times nothing happens at all. The constant sense of impending dread this generated was eerily sublime. Whannell and Duscio intelligently force the viewer to question everything they see. By the time the film’s visual effects wizards took control and this invisible assailant’s existence was no longer a question I still found myself wondering how much of what was happening was real and how much was my own imagination attempting to make it appear to be that way.

Then there is Moss. After giving the performance of a lifetime in Alex Ross Perry’s Her Smell, the talented actress follows it up with a turn here that’s every bit as complex, grounded and emotionally catastrophic. I could see the various ways

Cecilia was continually fracturing at her core, the aftereffects of her torturous relationship with Adrian leaving lasting scars which are precipitously acerbated by the presence of this new unseen attacker. She allows insight into pained spaces of regret and recrimination that have festered into unhealthy wounds that left unchecked will lead to corrosively self-destructive tragedy.

But Moss also slyly showcases the resilient warrior lying dormant within this young woman, Cecilia’s determination to finally allow herself to be free the key to whether or not she’ll be able to survive this ordeal and keep her friends safe from harm.

I liked what Whannell did with Upgrade. It felt electrifyingly alive, and even as cartoony as that action-horror-science fiction hybrid could be, it still made me excited to see what the filmmaker had up his sleeve next. Even so, I was still unprepared for just how terrific The Invisible Man was going to be. This is next-level stuff that signifies his arrival as a talented storyteller who has an innate ability to take seemingly tired concepts and ideas and make them feel original and contemporary.

This is a great movie, one I dare say come the end of the year, I’ll still be rapturously crowing about.

a wise-cracking young man (Jamie Blackley) who learns to game the financial system at a young age, his thuggish antics only growing more confidently aggressive as his personal bank account, along with that of his first wife and longtime business partner Samantha (Isla Fisher), continues to grow.

As for that party, it’s a gigantic event where the fashion giant attempts to reenact his favorite movie Gladiator by building a mini Greek Coliseum while also having his staff dress up in slave attire while he, his family and his guests wear the garments of the ruling elite. He gets a giant trained lion to be the center of attention, hires popular musical artists to perform and pays several celebrity impersonators to mingle amongst his guests, making it all look as if McCreadie is more popular and beloved than he actually is.

In some ways Greed is dead-serious.

As Nick traverses back and forth between Britain and India, he learns numerous hard truths regarding the dangerous working conditions McCreadie’s garment makers are working under to supply him with the low-cost, faux designer clothes his shops are known for. He also hears stories of egregious manipulations of British tax laws, discovering how offshore safe havens make it easy for the wealthy to hide their assets from the

prying eyes of the government.

At other times the movie is a comedic lark, a broadly satirical cartoon that puts an avalanche of potential laughs into a variety of uncomfortably disorienting places. It’s as if Winterbottom is trying to make a Ken Loach-style social commentary crossed with one of his The Trip films (which also just so happen to star Coogan) mixed with one of his more serious fact-based melodramas like A Mighty Heart or Welcome to Sarajevo. But for whatever reason these stylistic choices never coalesce into something insightfully memorable. Worse, even if I agree with much of what the filmmaker is trying to say and feel the inequalities he spotlights need more attention, that didn’t mean I liked being didactically beaten over the head by them as if Winterbottom were wielding a metaphorical sledgehammer.

Not that there aren’t some terrific moments and performances. Even under layers of moderately laughable old age makeup, Shirley Henderson is a riot as McCreadie’s mother, while Fisher has a handful of sensational scenes that reminded me just how good an actress she can be when given the opportunity. Most impressive of all is Dinita Gohil. She plays Amanda, one of the billionaire’s most trusted assistants. But her backstory is tragically complex, and when

the truth comes out the chaos that is produced admittedly took me by surprise.

Gohil makes all of this come to life splendidly, a scene between her and Mitchell where she reveals her mother’s connection to McCreadie simply breathtaking.

Best of all is Coogan. The veteran actor is in his element as the fast-talking, sincerely double-dealing McCreadie. He balances the serious and comedic elements of the story with more deftly nuanced panache than the actual overall movie itself does. This is a suitably larger-than-life performance that’s more heartfelt and emotionally demonstrative than I anticipated it was going to be, Coogan dominating things to such a degree it’s impossible to imagine what this satire would have looked like without him.

If only all of that were enough. There are just too many elements at play here – I haven’t even mentioned subplots involving Syrian refugees or McCreadie’s daughter “acting” in a reality television show chronicling her romantic life – Winterbottom frustratingly unable to juggle them all as skillfully as he typically does. The drama, comedy, satire and commentary don’t merge into anything meaningful, Greed a stiflingly discombobulated letdown that can’t pay its entertainment bills without going into the red.
