As always, SMC packs their performances with all the songs, sparkle and sequins you’d expect for the ultimate tribute.

I had a chance to chat with Michaels via email. Here is the transcript of our conversation:

MK Scott: Looking forward to seeing you perform with the Seattle Men’s Chorus.

What can we expect?

Chad Michaels: I’m thrilled to be returning to The Great Northwest and to be working with the Seattle Men’s Chorus!!

The guys are doing a tribute to Cher and I’ll be the creamy filling between sets!! It’s going to be Cher-rific!!

MK: Will you be singing with the chorus or lipsyncing? With Cher, being the main focus, what inspired you to have a career as Cher?

CM: The art of celebrity impersonation has been the focus of my career and Cher is one of many Divas in my repertoire. Cher is an Icon and for me continues to be a source inspiration and someone whose legend I’m honored to portray. I will, however, leave the live vocals to the chorus professionals and be lip-syncing for my life!

MK: Since, your national debut on “Drag Race,” what has been the best thing to come out of it?

CM: “Drag Race” has been an amazing journey since my appearance on S4.

I’ve met so many amazing friends and fans around the world and been given a platform to create my art. I’m grateful for all the opportunities that have come my way and I’m proud to be one of Rupaul’s All Stars.

MK: As Cher, what is your opinion on Trump?

CM: I’ll be voting Trump out of office with the rest of the mentally competent American people in 2020. He deserves no comment or remark.

MK: What is next for you?

CM: I’ll be heading out on a European tour of “Burlesque” with Farrah Moan as Christina Aguilera in April produced by KlubKidz UK and you can also catch me in an upcoming Net Flicks series!

MK: You and Cher have met. What has been the best advice you have gotten from Cher, herself?

CM: Cher has never really given me advice, but she has always been a doll when I have had the opportunity to meet with her face to face. After coming to see me perform in LA once she tweeted that I was a “genius”!! Forget the advice, I’ll take the validation!!! Can’t wait to see you Seattle!!!

continued from cover about whether it’s better to follow through with the honor-code of vengeance or if the world is better off trying to accept prior battle-strife and the thousands of dead combatants in order to build a more lasting peace.

The feeling of the play is akin to the science-fiction fantasy on the shelves of your local bookstore. By the end of the play, you’re pretty sure that Lee’s premise is that vengeance doesn’t work out so well, but the journey is one great ride, with a lot of laughs sprinkled in to leaven the debate.

Ren (Ayo Tushinde) is a young woman on a quest to find and duel the last of five generals who she believes conspired to betray her father-general during an epic war. She meets Bala (Sunam Ellis), a veteran fighter from the recent war, who can hardly be bothered to associate with the young quester, but grudgingly agrees to travel “in the same direction.”

those he encounters during his travels. He buys a pair of high-powered handguns, which he carefully hides amongst his belongings. Jay does all of this because he has no intention of actually attending the wedding. Instead, he’s there to kidnap the erstwhile bride, Samira (Radhika Apte), a wealthy businessman hiring him to bring her to a Delhi hotel utilizing any means he deems are necessary.

That’s the setup to writer/director Michael Winterbottom’s (24 Hour Party People, The Trip) dramatic thriller The Wedding Guest, and it’s safe to say nothing works out quite as planned. Samira isn’t at all upset about her kidnapping. An unintended death has massive repercussions that no one could have anticipated.

Jay is double-crossed by the man who hired him. A plot involving stolen and copied diamonds is discussed. The idea of returning Samira to Pakistan and have her go through with her wedding even if she doesn’t want to is pondered. All of that and more tran-

Bala has her own quest to manage, besieged by the ghost of her dearest friend (Natalie Berg). Bala had promised to find her and so far has failed.

Along the way, they meet a band of actors who act out the war to gain them enough coin to keep going. When Ren accidentally wounds one, she must take over the role to make amends. The two travelers wander with Riza (Isis King), the doctor and leader, Miro (Fune Tautala), the theatrical manager, Sori (Maile Wong) and Tae (Dylan Smith), the actors.

More details of the story would simply reveal too much of the story. It’s best to read the book – oops, see the play – yourself!

Directing by Amy Poisson, whose association with Lee is long and deep, means that a strong mind-meld between writer and director creates solid choices for what the technical requirements should be. A wonderful musician, Leanna Keith (augmented by sound designer Joanna Melamed), provides both background music and sound

effects that are crucial to certain moments.

There are some moments where the characters must move at faster than human speed and a flute sound effect creates just the magical assist to allow our minds to perceive it that way. Similarly, deep drum sounds create the sense of pending doom or the sonorous moves of ritualistic battle preparations.

Spare set designs with a small bridge, large rocks, a silky cloth river, and some Asian-style backdrops (by Parmida Ziaei) allow for instant changes in location and a sense of travel. Lighting designer Ahren Buhmann creates subtle shifts in time with gentle changes.

Costumer Jocelyne Fowler is also no stranger to Lee’s plays, and provides clearly-imagined and well-executed costumes for the world of continuity needed.

Fight director May Nguyen Lee choreographs exacting battles with real weapons that demand a high level of conscious sword-play for the actors not to get hurt!

While every actor here does a terrific job, Ellis’ grumpy, unprepossessing and gives-no-fucks Bala is just a joy throughout. If Lee needs another idea for a series, I would be so down for more Bala stories!

As Lee has already demonstrated through her world premiere series of steampunk plays, she is a playwright to be reckoned with. Don’t miss this super show!

spires within the determinedly somber confines of Winterbottom’s film, each of the narrative convulsions tied together with strings made out of honest human emotion and not ones spun out of anything facile or annoyingly impersonal.

The first half is breathlessly fascinating. Patel glides through the story, crafting an imposingly complex figure of shadow and mystery with rigid precision. His enigmatic stoicism has a forceful intensity that’s intriguing, watching Jay weave his way from England to India to Pakistan and finally back to India a true wonder to behold. He’s like James Bond, Jason Bourne, Jack Bauer and Snake Plissken all rolled into one mysterious shell, all of which makes the cracks that begin to form when his abduction of Samira goes sideways even more compelling. Patel is magnetic, and even when the film stops knowing exactly what it wants to do or where it wants to go the actor’s concentrated internalized ferocity keeps things interesting no matter how oddly disjointed or unfocused the overall narrative itself might suddenly become.

Good thing, because infuriatingly Winterbottom’s scenario does lose its way at

a certain point. Problem is, talking about any of that in too great a detail would construe spoiling a couple of the film’s most important plot twists. What can be said is that what begins as something of a character-driven thriller with noir-like elements transforms into a study of people from different worlds learning what makes the other tick, which would of course be fine if the script did something more substantive with this change in focus than it ultimately does. After a key moment of angry, unexpected tragedy erupts into shocking bloodshed Winterbottom slows things down to an oddly inert crawl, none of which is ever as involving or affecting as I’m sure the filmmaker intended.

Not to say any of this is bad, per se.

It isn’t. Patel and Apte are quite good together, their haunted chemistry born from a humanistic misery that’s universal in its authentic desperation. But as wonderful as they are that does not make me any more comfortable with the way in which Winterbottom changes gears during the last act. He’s attempting to make some broader, more inclusively heartbreaking statement yet for all the filmmaker’s talent and effec-

tiveness behind the camera I just can’t say any of it mattered to me all that much. That deeper meaning somehow gets lost, making the final moments ring with a hollow emptiness that left me frustratingly cold.

But I did love that first half of the film something fierce, while Patel’s performance is so stellar it makes me want to urge people to watch this independent effort in the theatre even with all of my reservations and obvious displeasure with the last third.

I was also suitably impressed with Giles Nuttgens’ (Hell or High Water) meticulously composed cinematography, the entire motion picture having an intimate visual allure that’s breathtaking. Also of note is Harry Escott’s (Welcome to the Punch) effectively minimalist score, the composer’s themes having an evocatively aggrieved eloquence I wholly responded to. All of that added together makes me wish I liked The Wedding Guest more than I actually do. If I decide to give it a second look sometime in the future here’s hoping I can forgive the film’s missteps and embrace its many virtues more than I vexingly can right now.

Celebrating 45 Years!

Visually imaginative Park an uneven animated attraction

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer WONDER PARK Now playing Intellectually imaginative 8-year-old June (voiced by Brianna Denski) and her doting mother (Jennifer Garner) spend each evening building Wonderland, a magnificent amusement park with all sorts of incredible rides and astounding sights dreamt up by the two of them in meticulous detail and engineered to precise specifications. It is a world where science and magic comfortably intermingle, all of it run by the charismatic Peanut, a friendly chimpanzee who takes great pleasure in bringing every attraction and ride to life.

It’s all just fantasy, of course, but when June’s mother gets sick and has to leave home to get an experimental treatment, the young girl finds herself drowning in anger, grief and emotions so complex she doesn’t know how to deal with any of them in a rational manner, forgetting all about building Wonderland in the process. Her loving father (Matthew Broderick) does the best he can, thinking that sending his daughter off to a mathematics summer camp with her best friend Bunky (Oev Michael Urbas) will help brighten her mood. Yet June can’t bear to be apart from her dad, not for a moment, especially right now, and she escapes out of the bus and into the local woods intending to walk back home to be with him whether he wants her there or not.

All of that is pretty serious stuff for an animated kids film from the folks at Nickelodeon. Safe to say, once June goes into the forest things get suitably nonsensical, the girl ending up smack-dab in the middle of her imagined playground of Wonderland to discover the park in ruins, Peanut (Norbert Leo Butz) missing and his helpers the furry blue bear Boomer (Ken Hudson Campbell), the efficient and fastidious boar Greta (Mila Kunis), the safety-conscious porcupine Steve (John Oliver) and the park’s maintenance experts Cooper (Ken Jeong) and Gus (Kenan Thompson) all at a collective loss as to what they should be doing in order to revert things back to the way they once were. It’s as if the youngster has wandered right into the middle of her own imagination, like she’s stepped out of reality into a weirdly surreal neverland,

sibly to free a group of unjustly detained political prisoners. But that isn’t the actual plan. The team is going to double-cross their two expert trackers Payu (Tony Jaa) and Long Fei (Tiger Chen), leave for dead any civilians trapped at the camp and lay waste to every soldier who is guarding the actual prisoners actually being held there. They are doing this in order to free their boss, international terrorist and assassin Collins (Scott Adkins), the team needing his tactical leadership in order to pull off their latest violently high-profile assignment they’ve recently been paid a tidy sum to accomplish.

Crack guerilla fighter, military tactician and expert martial artist Jaka (Iko Uwais) is one of the soldiers assigned to help guard the camp. During the assault his wife is killed and he is left unconscious by a massive explosion. Waking up, he tracks down both Payu and Long Fei, both of whom secretly escaped after they were betrayed by the mercenaries, discovering neither man was responsible for the chaos and tragedy at the camp but were instead just additional victims. None of which stops him from setting both men up for slaughter, Jaka revealing to local authorities where they are hiding while also clandestinely informing the money handlers funding Collins and his crew that they weren’t so successful rubbing either out back in the jungle.

the future welfare of this world she and her mother created suddenly dependent on whether or not she can conquer her own allencompassing grief.

It’s honestly heady stuff at times, writers Robert Gordon (Galaxy Quest), Josh Appelbaum (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and André Nemec (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol), the latter two responsible for the finished screenplay, planting some very big themes and ideas smackdab in the middle of a colorfully exuberant computer animated adventure. Concepts of grief, regret and depression play a huge part in the proceedings, the reasons for Wonderland’s downfall directly due to June’s inability to process any of her feelings relating to her mother’s illness. There is a thread of distinct sadness that permeates every single story beat, and for a studio known more for stuff like The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and Rugrats in Paris: The Movie this is an unexpected turn of events to say the least.

Not that this is some serious drama unsuitable for children. Just the opposite.

The film is a colorfully indulgent extravaganza that shares quite a bit in common with another Nickelodeon favorite, Jimmy

Neutron: Boy Genius, and much like that one this story, too, features a whip-smart youngster who utilizes her brain first, her empathy for others second and doesn’t resort to anything akin to brawn until all other options have been exhausted. Additionally, this crazy fantasy-adventure features a bizarre series of visual absurdities (including legions of formerly stuffed chimpanzee dolls dubbed “Chimpanzombies” out to dismember the park) that are so psychedelic one wonders if the animators and writers might have been utilizing mind-altering, and not altogether legal substances when they initially dreamt it all up. It’s the kind of stuff kids tend to go wild over and adults pray they won’t get an earsplitting migraine from sitting in the theatre trying to endure, whether that’s a plus or a minus a matter of individual taste.

For my part, while I liked the Inside Out meets The Wizard of Oz meets Up character-driven elements, and while I appreciated the ambitions driving June and her Wonderland friends towards success, it’s all so hyperactively paced and so frenetically animated I can’t say the film as a whole left me satisfied. It all became a visual blur at various times, and it was only when the

narrative slowed down to focus on individual character interactions that I ever found my interest piqued and my emotions fully engaged. There is a point to this story, and I loved many of the moralistic life lessons the filmmakers were trying to get across to the younger members of their audience. But the overblown razzle-dazzle, no matter how well animated, tends to dilute all of that quite substantively, and I’m not altogether certain all of them are going to get through as intended amidst all the lively zaniness.

I do think kids will enjoy Wonder Park, more than likely quite a lot. I also think there are a number of positives making it such that parents shouldn’t feel any reticence if they choose to let their little ones give the film a look. As for whether they should as well, that I can’t answer. Personally I think the plusses almost outweigh the minuses, emphasis on “almost,” and because of that I’m not sure what adults are going to think about any of what transpires.

An imaginative mixed bag is still a mixed bag, and for anyone over the legal driving age this might be one animated attraction not worth standing in line in order to ride.

I’m not sure what else to say in regards to the wildly nonsensical and convoluted plot that’s fueling high-octane action extravaganza Triple Threat. Needless to say, the film also revolves around the potential political assassination of the philanthropic daughter of a deceased billionaire, Xian (Celina Jade), who has made it her mission to stamp out political and police corruption in China and Thailand by eradicating drug cartels and empowering communities with an infusion of dedicated funds designed to increase educational and employment opportunities.

There’s also a full-on assault on a police station where Payu and Long Fei just happen to be being held at and also where Xian runs to for help after the first attempt on her life goes sideways. Finally, there’s an additional subplot where Jaka infiltrates Collins’ crew as their new guide, his reasons for doing so so convoluted and irrational there’s no way I can describe them in any type of detail that wouldn’t end up sounding nothing short of absurd.

Granted, trying to find anything inside of this movie that could be construed as rational or that makes much in the way of practical sense is a waste of time. This is a massive, fast-paced cartoon that pits a number of the screen’s most iconic cinematic martial artists from Asia and the United States against one another and then allows them to face-off in extended bouts of hand-to-hand combat. It features sequences of stunning action as Payu and Long Fei inadvertently

become Xian’s protectors all the while Jaka attempts to orchestrate Collins’ demise while standing right there next to him. There are chases. There are shoot-outs. There are feats of derring-do that will likely rival just about anything that will hit theatre screens at any point throughout the remainder of the year, all of it in service of what I can only imagine is a bizarrely silly story that was purposefully dreamt up that way by veteran stuntman turned director Jesse V. Johnson (The Debt Collector) and his trio of screenwriters right from the beginning.

Even if it all is ridiculous I kind of loved this brutally visceral action extravaganza anyhow. Watching the likes of Jaa (OngBak), Uwais (The Raid), Chen (Man of Tai Chi), White (Black Dynamite), Adkins (Doctor Strange), Michael Bisping (Den of Thieves) and JeeJa Yanin (Chocolate) go at one another with such giddy ferocity is an absolute treat. Johnson stages each encounter between hero and villain with visually pugnacious restraint, he and cinematographer Jonathan Hall (Zombeavers) allowing these sequences to play out in an aggressively fluid manner where the athletic prowess of the actors is never a question mark.

As such editor Matthew Lorentz (Accident Man) cuts things efficiently, preferring to craft seamless moments of brutal intensity that leap off the screen and where the viewer ends up feeling each punch to the gut and kick to the face as if the individual doing this fighting had every intention of striking them instead of their on-screen opponent.

I know I’m beating a dead horse saying this again, but from a narrative standpoint none of this makes a lick of sense. If you asked me what Jaka’s overall plan is to erase Collins and his crew I couldn’t begin to tell you what it is. As for the terrorist and assassin, his reasons for putting his team members in pointlessly inane harm’s way time and time again is frankly inexplicable.

In regards to the sheer volume of coincidences required to bring Payu, Long Fei and Xian together and send them on the run they are substantively titanic, and trying to list them all here inside this review would require multiple paragraphs.

What’s crazy is how little any of that matters in a negative way. The action is so consistently spectacular, and Chen, Uwais, Jade and especially Jaa are so unfailingly charismatic, that the fact the story is a total mess hardly bothered me at all. Everything builds to a magnificent final showdown where the three heroes face off against Collins and the remainder of his crew in a series of stupendous bouts of martial arts prowess and athletic strength that are nothing short of sensational. All of them are amazing, every single one, everything building to a climactic bout featuring Adkins, Chen, Uwais and Jaa that’s beyond glorious. All of this and more makes Triple Threat an eye-popping marvel fans of hardcore action cinema are undoubtedly going to be delighted with, multiple viewings not so much anticipated as they are honestly undeniable.
