David Henry Hwang’s brilliant M. Butterfly at ArtsWest Playhouse and Gallery has so much to it that days later, I find myself still unpacking what it all means. Is this the sign of a great theater production?

NEW YORK (January 15, 2019) – NYC Pride, the official host of WorldPride 2019 and Stonewall 50, is thrilled to announce further details about NYC Pride’s WorldPride closing ceremony. All are welcome to this final celebration of Pride on Sunday, June 30th from 7 to 10pm in NYC’s iconic Times Square.

The evening will provide a full slate of influential speakers and global musical talents who represent the cultural diversity, tenacity, and grace of the LGBTQIA+ community. One of the renowned artists slated to perform is Grammy Award–winning singersongwriter Melissa Etheridge.

Celebrating 45 Years!

Seattle Symphony’s “Celebrate Asia” was a day of music and culture

by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer SEATTLE SYMPHONY “CELEBRATE ASIA” January 27 The 11th annual “Celebrate Asia” presented by the Seattle Symphony was a whimsical day of music and culture that celebrated the whole continent of Asia.

Interestingly enough the fun started 90 minutes prior to the actual concert with entertainment happening in the grand lobby of Benaroya Hall. Emceed by Aleksa

Manila, the Pre-concert featured performers from The Morning Star Cultural Center, Swaranjali School of Music, and the International Lion Dance and Martial Arts Team.

Joining Manila on the platform were Miss Gay Seattle, Miss India WA, Miss Asia WA, Mr Asia WA, and Ms India WA. During the Symphony performance, everyone cheered when the Korean born, female conductor, Shiyeon Sung, stepped out onto the stage.

The performances in Act One, looked short on paper (only three numbers), but the numbers were long, but whimsical, with one number (“Rhapsody on a theme

of Paganini, Op. 43”) lasting 23 minutes and another (‘The Chairman Dances” from Nixon in China) lasting 12 minutes, with guest pianist, Seong-Jin Cho, plus the world premiere of Chia-Ying Lin’s “Ascolsia”.

To open Act Two, guest soprano Kathleen Kim sang with style and humor for “snagS&Snarls: Scenes from Alice in Wonderland” by Unsuk Chin.

Then Kim left the stage and Sung then conducted “Pubbanimitta” by Narong Prangcharden. Sung was so fascinating to watch by being animated when conducting.

Kim finished the show by performing 2 traditional songs, “Arirang” and “I Miss

Mount Keumkang”.

Post-Show more performers brought energy to the grand lobby including CHIKIRI and the School of TAIKO, followed by the Bollywood dancer from the Rhythms of India.

The whole day of the “Celebrate Asia” should never be missed. You go in expecting culture and you end up with more energy and happiness.

Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Etheridge has remained one of America’s favorite female singer-songwriters for more than two decades. On October 7, Melissa Etheridge released Memphis Rock & Soul, her first album since 2014’s critically lauded This Is M.E. Recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis, the album has received stellar reviews. Etheridge is also featured on the cover of the Holiday 2018 NYC Pride Guide: WorldPride Preview.

and self-delusion through fantasy. These and many more sub-textual elements are at play in M. Butterfly, but I am not here to write a thesis, just a simple review.

This Tony Award winning 1988 play uses Puccini’s Madame Butterfly opera as inspiration for the story. The story spans a vast amount of time – from the beginnings of China’s Cultural Revolution in 1947, then to Paris in 1986 – told in flashback by Rene Gallimard, a captivating David Quicksall, about his life in Beijing as a French diplomat.

In between the songs, Bannon-as-Klaus tells a moving narrative of his life as a young, queer German gifted with a soprano vocal range, who moved to Manhattan in the 1980’s with a generation of youth inspired by Andy Warhol’s Factory.

Klaus tells the tale of his brush with fame and all-too-young death as one of the first celebrity victims of the AIDS epidemic. Known as the weirdo’s weirdo, starving artist Klaus was famous for trading his homemade pastries in exchange for studio time and rehearsal space to create music that became inspiration for artists like David Bowie and Joey Arias. The Raisins Team will continue conducting new interviews to weave them into an original play to be produced every February. Raisins 2019 was generated from candid interviews of artists of color around the country and then crafted into six multidimensional women. These women of color will be confronted with the question: “How can we dismantle white supremacy in the American theater?” They will walk to the edge of what is civil to find what is right. www.raisins2019.brownpapertickets.com

Song Liling – whom he calls Butterfly. Song is played by Tom Dang who absolutely shines bright in this role. Unbeknownst to Gallimard, Song is working as a Communist spy and is spilling his secrets to the regime as well as keeping many secrets from him.

Gallimard falls in love with his idea of a perfect beauty; submissive, feminine, and devoting. As Gallimard’s marriage and job fall apart, he heads back to Paris still longing for Butterfly after many years. Eventually he is imprisoned for espionage just as Butterfly returns with some hard truths that Gallimard must confront, and he does so very darkly. M. Butterfly is a truly compelling production.

An eclectic and talented supporting cast highlight the story with its sparse Chinese

themed set. These talents include Jason Marr (Marc/Pinkerton), Rachel GuyerMafune (Renee), Kathy Hsieh (Comrade Chin), Marianna de Fazio (Agnes), Mark Waldstein (Toulon), and dancers Margaret Hotchkiss and Ayako Shapiro.

Directed with a sure steadiness by Samip Raval, M. Butterfly is very subtle in the execution of its themes. It’s not overthe-top with its message (it could certainly go there) compared to today’s in-your-face hashtag culture. Raval’s technique hearkens back to when this was originally produced in the mid 80’s, that repressed and conservative Reagan-era when themes could artfully hide in art and then seep into our minds once we are back into our real lives.

B-Sides is a staged reading of 5 short LGBTQ plays. https://www.brownpapertickets.com/ event/3917280 The Woman in Black, Seattle Repertory Theatre, 2/22-3/24 In the village of Crythin Gifford, the wind howls across the moors and fog creeps mysteriously around the town spires. At the edge of the village’s cemetery, young lawyer Arthur Kipps glimpses the figure of a woman, garbed all in black, and is drawn into Crythin’s cursed and haunted history.

Susan Hill’s gothic ghost story, The Woman in Black, comes to spine-tingling life in this cunning stage adaptation that left London’s West End theatregoers enthralled. www.seattlerep.org This play questions the man/woman sexual dynamic, the West/East cultural perceptions, and the moralities of love and gender.

This production is a transformative experience. ArtsWest is the ideal intimate space for this to happen, especially with Hwang, Raval, Quicksall, and Dang as the centerpiece of the mesmeric M. Butterfly.

The UK hit concert, “The Choir of Man,” hits the Northwest for seven shows on their first US Tour

by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer “THE CHOIR OF MAN” OLYMPIA, BREMERTON, MEDFORD, LONGVIEW, BELLINGHAM, SEATTLE, TACOMA February 4-10 When I first heard about the “The Choir of Man,” I assumed that this was a boyband/ choral group. After some research, I soon realized that this was an actual stage show with nine hunky singers and dancers coming together with UK Pubs as the backdrop.

The synopis reads: The runaway hit of nu merous international music festivals is hitting the road for its first U.S. tour!

Known across the globe as “the ultimatefeel good show,” “The Choir of Man” offers up 90 minutes of indisputable joy! It’s a party. It’s a concert. It’s a pint-filled good time set in a working pub that combines hair-raising harmonies, high-energy dance, and live percussion with foot-stomping choreography. The multi-talented cast of nine handsome blokes sings everything – pub tunes, folk, Broadway, classic rock – all to roof-raising heights. It’s the best singing, dancing, stomping, pub crawl of a concert you’ll ever attend!

One those actors, Denis Grindel, plays the narrator in the show and has credits in the London theater scene; I chatted with Denis through email this past week.

MK Scott: Denis, welcome to the Pacific Northwest! Your show “The Choir of Man” is playing at 7 venues in 7 days. Will this be your first time in our area?

Denis Grindel: It will be my first time, yes! It’s actually been my first time visiting America doing this tour, so it’s been

an absolute joy to travel all over the States these past few months. We travelled the East Coast of America extensively before Christmas so we are all super buzzed to bring “The Choir of Man” west side! I grew up watching American TV and fantasizing over visiting the States one day, so to get to perform here with my friends is a dream come true for this Irish guy!

MK: In The Choir of Man, you play the narrator. Tell us about the show?

Denis: We like to say the show is essentially the best pub gig you’ve ever been to. It is a celebration of music, pub culture, community and the brotherhood that is found in male friendships. We invite the audience in to our pub “The Jungle” for the night to meet its local lads, like the “Casanova” played by my fellow Irish man Johnny Sheehy who is unlucky in love and tells his story of love lost while beautifully belting Adele’s “Hello”. In my role as the narrator, I take the audience through the pub and its

usual faces, introducing them to the boys and their stories through song and spoken poetry. The audience leaves feeling they’ve gained nine new friends, who just happen to be multi-instrumentalists and sing in sixpart harmonies, plus we have free beer!

MK: The show is filled with actors from London’s West End and you have some experience being the male lead in Roddy Doyle’s The Commitments and youring with Rent in your native Ireland. Who else in the cast should we watch out for?

Denis: Well, as I mentioned, Johnny Sheehy playing “Casanova” was a finalist in Ireland’s “The Voice’” He has the most incredible voice and it wows audiences every night. But all the lads are fantastic; it never ceases to amaze me the multiple talents everyone possesses; the guys play piano, guitar, trumpet, drums, they tap dance, they juggle, mix cocktails on stage!

The fun never stops.

MK: What has been the most memorable experience so for on the tour?

Denis: We’ve visited so many amazing places on the tour so far; from New Orleans to Niagara Falls to finishing the first leg of our tour at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. It has been a crazy fun experience travelling the length and breath of the States in a tour bus with some of my closest friends but I think the most poignant moments that I’ll keep with me is when we get to meet the audience after the show each night. We have a section of the show where we toast to our fathers through the song “Dance with My Father”

by Luther Vandross, and it really means a lot when the members of the audience feel so moved to share with me afterwards stories of their father’s passing and thanking us for the tribute – these moments are very special.

MK: What would be your dream role?

Denis: I would love to perform the role of Gar in Brian Friel’s Philadelphia, Here

I Come. I’ve always felt very connected to the story in this play and Friel is one of my favourite playwrights of all time. If we are talking musical theatre – “Emcee” in Cabaret – someone cast me in it already, haha!

The story, the music I adore and the character is in essence the narrator of the piece, which seems to be my forte these days.

Being a proud member of the LGBTQ, I would also love to work on more projects that tell the stories of community.

MK: And finally, who in entertainment inspires you?

Denis: My inspirations are ever changing, but some that spring to mind right now are Rami Malek – I loved what he did with Freddie in Bohemian Rhapsody this year, it was simply beautiful. Ben Platt is, I think, every performers talent crush these days, his voice is insane. Also fellow Irish musicians and actors are a huge inspiration to me and I am very proud of the amazing work and talent that emerges from our little green island every year.

Maybe this time for I Do, I Do, it’s “I Don’t”

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer I DO, I DO VILLAGE THEATRE ISSAQUAH (through Feb 24) EVERETT (March 1-24) The little operetta, I Do, I Do, is not done very often, so I anticipated it a treat to be able to see an almost-lost musical such as this on stage. Village Theatre is mounting this show with two solid performers: local firebrand, Kendra Kassebaum, and imported leading-man, Peter Saide. Saide is lovely in the role, as a good singer, an adept dancer to director/choreographer Michael Arnold’s old-timey dances, and he provides solid acting in the range of emotions the character goes through. (I just still wonder if there was a need to bring in talent with all the available men here who might easily do the role.)

I Do, I Do is pretty formulaic and there is almost nothing surprising about it. You can guess it’s the story, through song, of the life of a marriage. This one happens to begin, per the story it was built on, in 1895 and extend to 1945. The play, The Fourposter, by Jan de Hartog, was the genesis of the musical.

The writers of The Fantasticks, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, took on this play and wrote a bucket of songs with few intermediate words of dialogue. Since it is a two-hander with a unit set (translation: only two actors on one set that doesn’t change), it was cheap to present and easy to make production cost investments back.

Most of the songs are not ones that travelled into the public sphere of song hits, though they’re generally pleasing and easy to understand musically. So, you’re not likely to know them beforehand.

changes, there’s no cognizance of changes of actual history.

More fussiness comes with the “flying in” of clotheslines hung with clothing, which I found distracting. Where once is cute, several times is device overkill. We might try guessing why all this “stuff” goes on in a simple musical – maybe Arnold and crew didn’t trust the audience to be satisfied with something simple and straightforward. Maybe they felt they had to “dramatize” it. I can promise that it really didn’t help the production.

There is a production guide that makes some good comments on some of the anachronisms in this old show that people might have some difficulties with from a 2019 viewpoint: https://villagetheatre.org/Downloads/ mainstage/prod-guides/I-Do-I-Do-Production-Preview-Guide.pdf It doesn’t mention the most offensive lyric, at least from my point of view: In the song, “What Is A Woman,” the lyric is, “To be a woman, / Means being lonely. That’s why a woman is only, / Alive when in love.”

It’s very hard to forgive those lyrics – but again, it’s an old show, written by men.

Kassebaum does her very best to put over the song, because she’s a terrific performer.

If you’re curious about this musical or you love Kassebaum (like I do) and just want more chances to hear her sing, then by all means give it a whirl.

The actors at Village Theatre are wonderful and well-cast. They make it a pleasant evening.

The biggest problem is with the production, which is a surprise, since usually, Village does top-notch technical work. It’s not at all “shoddy” – it’s fussy! It’s meticulous, but it’s completely overbuilt. This is a one-set show that calls for simple and clean bedroom items. What they’ve chosen to do is build an enormous wardrobe, with foldout bed, lots of attached closets and additional cubbies on the side.

Then the whole dang set MOVES. It “faces” toward one married partner and then turns to “face” the other. There’s lots of opening of cubbies to reveal a dining room table or a desk. Sure, there’s a need

for storing quick-change costuming, but the actors are constantly scrambling to open or close doors. Frankly, I think it takes away from both the story and the actors’ ability to relate to each other.

The musical itself seems not to have been dramaturgically double-checked as they wrote it: How far apart in age are the two children? Two years? Or four? At one point, the children are two years apart and another,the boy is 16 and the girl just got her first bra (so 11?).

Here, the production presents two baby carriages on stage with two infants even though years have passed between births.

And where are the hints of the 1920s clothing styles or 1940s? While there are perfectly serviceable pregnancy bump

Hardwicke’s agreeable Miss Bala an acceptably generic remake

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer MISS BALA Now playing While visiting her best friend Suzu (Cristina Rodlo) in Tijuana to help her prepare for the upcoming Miss Baja California beauty pageant, Los Angeles makeup artist Gloria (Gina Rodriguez) ends up in a terrifying situation far beyond anything she can control. After a night out at a popular local nightclub turns deadly, the young American makes the unwanted acquaintance of notorious drug cartel head Lino Esparza (Ismael Cruz Córdova) while in the same moment Suzu goes mysteriously missing. After performing a simple task for her captor, and with the promise he’ll find her friend, things get even worse for Gloria after Lino releases her. DEA agent Brian Reich (Matt Lauria) takes her into custody and claims he’s going to brand her a terrorist and put her behind bars for decades, forcing the frightened woman to go back to Mexico and start working for Lino in whatever capacity he so desires.

At first things go as planned. But after a deadly shootout between Lino’s men, the Mexican police and Reich’s agents goes spectacularly bad, Gloria learns that the only person she can trust to get both herself and the still vanished Suzu out of this mess alive is herself. Learning as much as she can, prepared to do whatever it takes, inching closer and closer to Lino while in the process of putting together a plan of action, this seemingly timid makeup artist turns out to be not as fragile as she appears. Gloria will survive this ordeal. She will find her friend. She will do this and more, discovering hidden talents as sharp as any knife and as lethal as any bullet as she does so.

A remake of writer/director Gerardo Naranjo’s 2011 Mexican hit, director Catherine Hardwicke’s and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer’s Miss Bala isn’t deep or profound. It isn’t nearly as intricate or as involved as the original film was, isn’t as interested in the minutia of the drug trade or in the incestuous nature of the rampant corruption that infects political and law

enforcement apparatuses alike as if it were a virus. This is a streamlined and efficient reworking of the material, one that is more invested in delivering a series of tense, electrifying thrills than it is anything else.

Hardwicke’s latest is undeniably generic yet just as equally not entirely unappealing, the film managing to hold my attention for most of its 104-minute running time even if what ended up happening wasn’t particularly memorable.

On a positive note, Rodriguez is terrific as Gloria, the “Jane the Virgin” star impressively dominating the film. Her fear is real, as is the growing sense of determination and resilience as her character comes to realize Reich could care less if she lives or dies and that Lino might not be the assertive antihero battling a dishonest system as he attempts to sell himself as. Rodriguez’s jittery physicality as she drives through the U.S. border with a massive shipment of cocaine hidden in her vehicle and thousands of dollars of cash taped to her waist is magnificent, and I loved the idiosyncratic authenticity of everything she does during this part of the story. In fact, my favorite scene might just be the organically jubilant squeal the actress unleashes as Gloria realizes she’s not going to be stopped for inspection by border control agents, the mixture of joy, sadness and terror that leaps off the screen in this one moment simply extraordinary.

The rest of the movie is…fine. It’s fine. Just fine. Not bad. Not good. Just fine. Unlike her last major studio calamity 2011’s Red Riding Hood, the director is back to the somewhat relaxed, visually precise dynamic she’s utilized in the majority of her directorial efforts including her still stunning debut Thirteen as well as the underrated Lords of Dogtown, the emotionally astute Miss You Already and her massively successful (and still best of the bunch) initial installment in the highly profitable Twilight franchise. But while her film is majestically composed by cinematographer Patrick Murguia (The Frozen Ground) and tightly edited by Terilyn A. Shropshire (Beyond the Lights), it’s still fairly blasé and dramatically rudimentary as far as narrative specifics are concerned.

While there’s plenty of energy there’s just as clearly not a ton in the way of urgency, the dividing line between the two rather distinctive in a fundamentally unavoidable way that’s benignly frustrating.

Look, I’m not going to hate on Miss Bala. Rodriguez is great and I can easily imagine myself being perfectly content to give this one a second look when it’s streaming on Amazon or Netflix, available

as a free selection OnDemand or after it begins making the rounds on Cable television. But it just as equally isn’t a thriller I’m going to make any plans to view again for the second time anytime soon. Hardwicke’s latest is far from a disaster. It also isn’t a motion picture I or anyone else is likely going to be celebrating all that vociferously at any point in the foreseeable future.

Mj Rodriguez (Pose) and Nico Santos (Crazy Rich Asians, NBC’s “Superstore”) announced the nominees via live-stream on GLAAD’s Facebook page hosted by AT&T from Park City, Utah during the Sundance Film Festival.

GLAAD announced 151 nominees in 27 categories, including an inaugural category for Outstanding Video Game, along with Kids & Family Programming, Comedy and Drama Series, Documentary, Reality Series, Music Artist, Comic Book, print, broadcast, and online news, and five Spanish-language categories. For the first time ever, the GLAAD Media Awards’ Outstanding Film – Limited Release category expanded from five to ten nominees as a result of a welcome increase in fair, accurate, and inclusive LGBTQ images in film.

The 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards nominees were published, released, or broadcast between January 1 and December 31, 2018. The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies, which fund GLAAD’s work to accelerate LGBTQ acceptance, will be held in Los Angeles on Thursday, March 28 at The Beverly Hilton, and in New York on Saturday, May 4 at the Hilton Midtown.

Obnoxious Dragon Ball Super: Broly a fan-friendly animated hit

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer DRAGON BALL SUPER: BROLY Now playing In retrospect, watching Dragon Ball Super: Broly wasn’t the greatest idea I’ve ever had. I have no idea what happens in the Dragon Ball universe. I am not familiar with any of the stories associated with it. I have never seen any of the other 19 films in the popular anime series that have been released over the past three-plus decades.

But after this one unexpectedly made a massive $25-million at the domestic box office last week I felt like I needed to see what all the fuss was about. After all, a movie should be able to stand on its own outside of its predecessors, so it seemed to me jumping in for my first Dragon Ball experience here shouldn’t have been too much of a problem.

So I think I could follow what was going on, but that’s only because Dragon Ball Super: Broly utilizes so many traditional fantasy, superhero, comic book and Greek Mythology storytelling tropes that I was already familiar with. Because of this I believe I was able to keep up with the plot for the most part. But just barely. Even then I still had trouble knowing what was going on at any given time, screenwriter and series creator Akira Toriyama unleashing a furious overabundance of exposition with such blazing speed and efficiency it all got a little bit maddening at times. He and director Tatsuya Nagamine drop their foot on the accelerator and never let up, every second of this film’s 100-minutes rushing by in the proverbial blink of an eye.

There’s like three origin stories, each involving the survivors of a race of powerful beings known as Saiyans. Before their planet is serendipitously destroyed by the powerful Frieza (voiced by Christopher Ayres), future warrior and all-around nice guy Goku (Seán Schemmel) is sent to Earth by his parents in order to hopefully live in peace. At the same time, Prince Vegeta (Christopher R. Sabat) was also away from

continued from page 7 his Knights of the Round Table had to have been true as well, and that figures like Sir Lancelot, the wizard Merlin and the evil sorceress Morgana were more than figments of a variety of famous authors’ collective imaginations.

Yet the sword is Excalibur. It has chosen him to lead a fight against unimaginable evil. The wizard Merlin (Patrick Stewart), masquerading as a fellow student (Angus Imrie) at Alex’s school, urges the boy to embrace his destiny but also warns him that Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson), far from a fictional creation, will do whatever she can to destroy him in an attempt to get her hands on Excalibur. It’s an epic adventure, one where this young boy will discover things about himself, his friend Bedders, his protective mother Mary (Denise Gough) and former enemies turned trusted allies Lance (Tom Taylor) and Kaye (Rhianna Dorris) he never knew possible. Most of all, Alex will learn that there’s more to being a leader than talking tough or carrying a magical sword, and if he isn’t honest and forthright no amount of courage will allow him to ever find the strength to defeat Morgana.

It’s been eight years since writer/director Joe Cornish made his stunningly spectacular R-rated debut with the rambunctiously crowd-pleasing Attack the Block and in the process made instant sensations of future Star Wars star John Boyega and

There’s a lot to keep up with, and there are a plethora of additional characters who appear at various points who are obviously important to the ongoing series but won’t make any sort of impact on a newcomer whatsoever and will only help to confuse things even more than they already are.

Additionally, considering this is the twentieth film in the franchise it isn’t a surprise that there is no real ending, just a big gigantic climax that sets up whatever is supposed to come next as far as Goku and Vegeta’s ongoing adventures are concerned. It’s all nothing more than an episode in a featurelength animated serial, each narrative building to a cliffhanger that hints at an explosive, earth-shattering culmination to the series that will likely never come.

The animation bounces back and forth from being of the humdrum 1980s-style television variety to being eye-popping in its dynamic inventiveness. But it’s also often a visual blur as things rarely slow down, even the few quiet moments overflowing in whiz and supercharged with an excessive amount of bang. And yet the final confrontation in Antarctica, as ridiculous as it might be, is undeniably impressive.

The animation and the camerawork are frequently extraordinary, and there is also some magnificent color work that knocked my socks off.

Listen, if I’d been a Dragon Ball fan from the beginning it’s likely I’d have enjoyed the heck out of this latest entry in the series.

Talking with people who have seen quite a few of these films, I can understand why they’re so darned excited about this one. But for me, as impressive as elements are and as confidently brought to life as all of this might be, personally I’m not sure I get what all the fuss is about. In the end Dragon Ball Super: Broly gave me something of a tiny headache, and because of that I’m pretty positive that when the twenty-first chapter sees a domestic theatrical release I’m probably not going to be asking to get a look at it no matter how many countless millions it ends up raking in at the box office.

their home planet, out on a mission of conquest where he ignored Frieza’s message to return not knowing that if he’d done so he’d have been killed with the rest of the Saiyans. Later, he would join Goku on Earth, the pair developing a brotherly lovehate relationship as they continually trained to protect those they love from destruction.

Meanwhile, years before any of that happened, Saiyan military leader Paragus (Dameon Clarke) disobeyed a direct order from his commander, Vegeta’s father, to allow his only child to be sent to the desolate and dangerous planet of Vampa as the tools utilized to measure his future powers theorize his abilities will be too massive to control. The angry parent steals a ship and follows his son to Vampa, and in his haste accidentally crash-lands on the planet. Naming him Broly (Vic Mignogna), he raises him to be the ultimate fighter, Paragus’ most fervent dream one that involves seeing his boy defeat Vegeta in single combat.

From there the film races forward into the future, and through a rather nonsensical series of events Frieza manages to orchestrate a confrontation between Broly, Goku and Vegeta in the isolated Antarctic nothingness where they’ll be free to ravage and destroy with little fear of causing any collateral damage. The final forty or so minutes is one long battle between the threesome, first Vegeta versus Broly, then Goku versus Broly, and finally the two Earth-residing heroes joining forces to work together to stop their fellow Saiyan before he inadvertently destroys the entire planet. There’s also this thing about seven magical items known as Dragon Balls that I’m certain fans of the series will know way more about than I do, while a pair of kindhearted intergalactic scavengers (I think that’s what they are; I’m honestly unsure) named Cheelai (Erica Lindbeck) and Lemo (Bruce Carey) end up playing an important role in the story’s eventual outcome as well.

In the years since he helped Edgar Wright come up with the initial story and script for 2015’s Ant-Man while also co-writing the screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin. He also appears in an uncredited cameo as a Resistance fighter in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Other than that?

Sadly there’s not a lot to talk about, the talented filmmaker unable to get funding for a variety of projects even though his debut became an instant cult phenomenon that some feel isn’t just terrific, but also happens to be one of the best films of the decade.

Cornish’s far more family-friendly Arthurian legend reinterpretation The Kid Who Would Be King was worth the wait.

This movie is a divine joy that treats both its characters as well as its audience with respect, this fiendishly entertaining fantasy-adventure overflowing in intelligence, imagination and wit that’s as infectious as it is exhilarating. Perfect fodder for viewers of all ages, genders and races, this is a story that lives up to the classic legend that inspired it, Cornish achieving the near impossible as he crafts a kid-friendly update that maintains respect for the source material even as it modernizes it in some fairly radical ways.

What’s interesting is just how much emotional weight the filmmaker injects straight into the heart of Alex’s story. The youngster is obsessed with learning about his father, even coming to believe that the reason Excalibur came to him must have something to do with the man’s disappearance not too long after his birth. There is

an authentic give-and-take between Alex and Mary that craftily ponders a plethora of weighty topics, mother and son finding ways to learn from one another that are free of artifice and subterfuge, truth becoming their most effective weapon to combat potentially lethal combinations of fear and distrust that are conspiring to do them both harm. Additionally, much like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Star Wars: The Last Jedi this tale finds compelling ways to remind viewers heroes come in all shapes and sizes, a person’s background, genealogy or lineage completely unimportant, the size of the person’s heart and the selfless purity of their actions all that truly matters.

At just about two hours in length the film can feel a little long, and there are some portions during the middle where I thought Cornish was unnecessarily repeating a few of his expositional plot points. Stewart, as much fun as he appears to be having as the elder incarnation of Merlin, is somewhat underutilized, while an entire suspense sequence taking place in Morgana’s underground lair is oddly inert as I personally found it obvious this was not a climactic encounter between hero and villain but instead was only a precursor for the bigger battle still to come.

But Ferguson is exquisite as the evil sorceress, the talented Mission: Impossible - Fallout and The Greatest Showman actress gleefully reveling in her character’s wicked ways with infectious relish. Chaumoo steals scenes left and right as Alex’s unapologetically candid best friend, while Imrie is a goofily eccentric hoot as the

younger Merlin. Best of all might be Dorris as Kaye, her performance a sly mixture of timid uncertainty and defiant self-confidence that allows her character to grow in resonance as events progress to their suitably rowdy conclusion. I loved her in this, a sequence featuring Kaye showcasing unimagined skills behind the wheel of a car as she, Alex, Bedders and Lance outrace demonic knights intent on their dismemberment planting a giant smile on my face that would remain there for the remainder of the motion picture.

Young Serkis, son of The Lord of the Rings and War for the Planet of the Apes star Andy Serkis, is wonderful in the title role, the young actor exhibiting a mesmeric talent for emotional variance that’s delightful. He jumps from comedy to drama with ease, and the naturalistic chemistry between him and Chaumoo is simply marvelous. But it is the scenes between Serkis and Gough that hit home the most, a quiet bit near the end involving them splitting my heart into a number of teeny tiny pieces that only made the events of the climax hit home with that much more invigorating authority.

All of which makes it no surprise that, even with a couple minor hiccups here and there, I ended up enjoying Cornish’s sophomore outing one heck of a lot. The Kid Who Would Be King is a total blast, this Arthurian tale of thrilling derring-do and noble valor a royal success worth taking the entire family to the theatre to see.
