up with a ten top was almost impossible, and the fact I left off a whole bushel of favorites like 1917, Dolemite Is My Name, Sunset, Us and The Wind is driving me batty.

But there was a lot to love about this past year at the movies. Between Parasite, Knives Out, Ready or Not, Hustlers and Satanic Panic (just to name a few titles) wealth inequality and racial bias became a hot topic that a whole bevy of talented filmmakers took the time to explore in a variety of creative ways. Films like Booksmart, Pain and Glory, Portrait of a Lady on Fire and The Most Dangerous Year looked at a whole swatch of LGBTQ issues with intelligently complex specificity, while others like The Nightingale, Just Mercy, The Farewell, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Queen & Slim, Blinded by the Light and Harriet offered up tales of race, gender, community and family that spoke volumes about the here and now even when they happened to be set almost 200 years in the past.

Marvel brought their first decade’s worth of super-heroic adventures to conclusion with the massively popular Avengers: Endgame, while Lucasfilm attempted to do the same by ushering in the ninth (and supposedly final) chapter in the 42-year saga of Luke Skywalker with the far less positively received Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Jordan Peele proved Get Out was far from a fluke with his provocative and unsettling thriller Us, star Lupita Nyong’o giving one of the year’s most critically acclaimed performances in the year’s top-grossing original property (i.e. one not based on any pre-existing intellectual property or I.P.). Greta Gerwig did the same, but instead of followingup Lady Bird with another drama of similar ilk, the talented writer/director instead chose to craft an audacious, experimentally ambitious adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, making the material vital and timely in ways I can’t say I anticipated.

In regards to box office, after their purchase of 20th Century Fox and including their current ownership of Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar, Disney was responsible for over 80% of 2019’s top box office hits. Of those, three (The Lion King, Aladdin and Dumbo) were remakes of some of the studio’s most enduring animated classics. Other titles in this mix for Disney were sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, 20th Century Fox imports Alita: Battle Angel and Ford v Ferrari, Pixar’s Toy Story 4 and Marvel’s Captain Marvel, all of which signals a theatrical dominance for the studio likely to have unknown repercussions that will reverberate throughout Hollywood for some time to come.

As far as the two streaming giants were concerned, this was a big year for Netflix, the studio scoring four of the most critically acclaimed films of 2019 with Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, Craig Brewer’s Dolemite Is My Name, Fernando Mereilles’ The Two Popes and Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, each expected to be major players when the Academy Award nominations are announced on January 13. Amazon Studios wasn’t nearly as lucky, wonderful films as divergent as Brittany Runs a Marathon, Late Night, The Aeronauts, The Report and Honey Boy failing to make the type of impression on audiences that could have potentially led to significant Oscar recognition.

There were the random failures like Tom Hooper’s grotesquely strange adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats, while the current incarnation of the X-Men series came to an unfortunately sudden conclusion with the DOA release of June’s Dark Phoenix. At the same time Warner Bros took a major leap of creative faith with two wildly disparate DC comics properties and ended up scoring major hits with both of them, Shazam! (which I hugely enjoyed) and Joker (which I admittedly loathed), the latter becoming the first R-rated motion picture to score over a billion dollars in worldwide ticket sales.

This is all only the tip of the iceberg, however, as trying to put an entire year of cinema into perspective in one short recap is almost impossible. Anyhow, here are my picks for the top ten films of 2019 followed by 25 addi-

tional titles I feel should be listed in the upper echelon of motion pictures released to domestic theatres over the past 12 months. Some are big. A lot of them are small. All, in my opinion, are worthy of a look. Here’s hoping those taking the time to read this article will take the time to do just that.

goofily divine Billie Lourd is magnificent as an angelic free-spirited siren who slyly forces the two girls to see both themselves and their classmates in a different light.

5. The Farewell (D: Lulu Wang) It’s difficult to envisage a more universally intimate familial melodrama than the one writer/director Lulu Wang composed for her feature-length debut. A movie that is a decided celebration of the filmmaker’s Chinese heritage but also speaks to audiences around the world no matter what their background or cultural heritage, The Farewell is a moving marvel I didn’t want to see come to an end. Awkwafina has never been better, and newcomer Zhao Shuzhen shattered my heart into teeny-tiny itsy-bitsy little pieces with her subtly cathartic performance.

TOP TEN 1. Her Smell (D: Alex Ross Perry) Elizabeth Moss gives a tour de force performance that sadly precious few took the time to see in writer/director Alex Ross Perry’s four-act chronicling of a selfdestructive punk rock star slowly attempting to put her life back together after publicly hitting rock bottom. Perry takes a litany of genre tropes and melodramatic contrivances and turns them on their head while giving Moss the freedom to dominate the screen as she emotionally combusts in ways that are a continual surprise. This is the best movie of 2019.

2. Booksmart (D: Olivia Wilde) Freewheeling, smart and rambunctious as heck, Olivia Wilde’s gloriously personal high school sex-positive graduation night comedy Booksmart is a raucous celebration of female friendships that overflows in hysterically ribald inventiveness. Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever are delightful as best friends breaking out of the shells they’ve constructed for themselves over the years, while a

3. The Nightingale (D: Jennifer Kent) Jennifer Kent’s blisteringly personal drama about abuse, racism and sexual violence in 1825 Tasmania is a shocking, oneof-a-kind journey into the heart of darkness that left me feeling battered and bruised by the time it came to its heart-stopping conclusion. Aisling Franciosi is astonishing as an Irish convict who goes on a journey to exact revenge against the soldier (Sam Clafin) who wronged her, and while the film is purposefully difficult to watch, this remains a violently horrifying experience I’ll never forget.

4. Pain and Glory (D: Pedro Almodóvar) Pedro Almodóvar’s best film since 2011’s The Skin I Live In is arguably the most personal of the acclaimed filmmaker’s entire career. Featuring a stunning Antonio Banderas as a filmmaker dealing with the ghosts of the past, present and future as he assesses his life and career, the movie bends back and forth through time as it analyzes the ephemeral line that exists between art and artist. The last scene is a jaw-dropping stunner that made me look at every second of the running time that came before it in an entirely different light.

6. Doctor Sleep (D: Mike Flanagan) Both an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel as well as a direct sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 classic The Shining, filmmaker Mike Flanagan pulls off the impossible with the mesmerizing Doctor Sleep.

Confidently shuffling through multiple layers of complex mythology, the movie ends up being a delicately personal examination of the lasting impact of trauma, grief and tragedy, all of it brought to life with a suitably supernatural sleight-of-hand. Rebecca Ferguson is seductively chilling as a soulsucking undead siren named Rose the Hat who consumes the souls of terrified children and in the process gives one of the best performances of 2019.

Shelby has a diabetic health scare, which is averted but doesn’t bode well for her hopes of having children. Time passes, and the women and their friends encounter tragedy and good fortune, growing stronger and closer in the process. LITTLE WOMEN continued from cover

radically alive and inventively electrifying reworking of author Louisa May Alcott’s timeless Little Women than what Greta Gerwig has accomplished with her new adaptation. Taking a nonlinear approach to the material, bouncing back and forth between various points of the March family’s story and, most notably, the fiercely determined Jo’s (Saoirse Ronan) pursuit to become a published author, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker’s Lady Bird follow-up is one of 2019’s most spectacular cinematic achievements.

While the basic narrative thrust remains the same (four close-knit New England sisters learn about life, loss and love over an eight-

year period during and just after the events of the Civil War), shifting her perspective between past and present gives Gerwig’s presentation of the material an electrifying dramatic thrust that’s fearlessly compelling. It also allows Jo’s story chronicling her sisters Meg (Emma Watson), Beth (Eliza Scanlen) and Amy (Florence Pugh), their mother Marmee (Laura Dern) and wealthy best friend and next-door neighbor Theodore “Laurie” Laurence (Timothée Chalamet) to leap off the screen as if it were bursting out of the budding writer’s head at the specific moment she’s putting her thoughts to parchment.

This approach is fascinating. This Little Women kept me on my toes, and even though I’ve read Alcott’s novel multiple times and have watched Armstrong’s sublime adaptation on numerous occasions, I

still felt like I was experiencing this tale for the first time while watching Gerwig’s film.

She adds a layer of introspective insight and observational curiosity that’s lovely, spinning things in a way that is wholly original and refreshingly prescient.

Not that this time-bouncing presentation always seems to suit Alcott’s source material. Introspective, kind-hearted Beth’s subplot is oddly muted and left me nowhere near as emotionally invested in its outcome as I typically am. I was also not entirely sold on Pugh’s performance as the rambunctious Amy. While she’s terrific at bringing the youngest March sister to life at 20, I never entirely bought what she was doing when portraying the character as a 13-year-old and as such I didn’t feel like she disappeared into the role in the same way her co-stars do.

Yet none of this matters all that much.

Ronan is flawless. Her scenes with Chalamet bubble with kinetically playful ferocity, while her more intimate moments with Watson (who has never been better), Scanlen, Dern, Meryl Streep (an appropriately stern Aunt March complete with pitch-perfect eyerolls), Chris Cooper (the film’s secret weapon as Laurie’s grandfather Mr. Laurence delivering a subtle, emotionally astute performance), Louis Garrel (as French professor Friedrich Bhaer, a character who’s crushing honesty will both enrage and capture Jo’s heart) and Tracy Letts (as literary editor Mr. Dashwood, playing a more vital role in the proceedings than initially meets the eye) are frequently magnificent. The Atonement, Brooklyn and Lady Bird actress is tremendous, proving once again she is one of her generation’s finest actors.

But the real star here is Gerwig’s script.

While Alexandre Desplat’s (The Shape of Water) sumptuous score, Yorick Le Saux’s (Personal Shopper) hauntingly fluid cinematography, Jess Gonchor’s (Hail, Caesar!) immaculate production design and Nick Houy’s (Mid90s) tidily precise editing are all superb, none of those components would mean a darn thing without the writer/director’s masterful reinvigoration of Alcott’s source material. Gerwig has taken the novel and made its plethora of forward-thinking themes and ideas come alive as if the author had dreamt them up here in the 21st century and not instead published them for the first time in 1869.

Jo crafts her own story under the director’s watchful eye, everything building to a climactic revelation that outside of the ending of Pain and Glory might be my favorite single moment of this past year.

I don’t feel the need to compose a plot synopsis. As timeless as this story might be I do understand not everyone, everywhere is going to be familiar with Alcott’s book. Yet there’s no reason to go into this adaptation knowing all the ins and outs of what is going to transpire. It’s eight years in the lives of the March women and that’s all one needs to know, discovering the heart, hope, tragedy, chaos, friendship, imagination, love and humanity that lies at the center of this new Little Women an outright joy to behold.

Emotionally intense Sandler gives viscerally urgent Uncut Gems its shine

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer UNCUT GEMS Now playing There is nothing polite about brothers Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie’s newest hyper-adrenalized ticking clock drama Uncut Gems. This blistering New York thriller is designed to put the viewer on edge.

It is constantly moving, the story’s unctuous urgency a primitive maelstrom of morally dubious human fallacy the consequences of which are a thundering avalanche of inescapable tragedy that will lethally bury anyone unlucky enough to be in its path.

At the center of this chaos is a mesmerizing Adam Sandler, the actor delivering his best, most invigorating and emotionally astute performance in years. As terrific as he was in Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories or Judd Apatow’s Funny People, I honestly feel like one has to go all the way back to Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2002 masterwork Punch-Drunk Love to find the actor this level of engaged.

Sandler is a bundle of hyperactive intensity as New York jewel merchant Howard Ratner, his edgy manic intensity a constant sprint along a razor-thin tightrope where the slightest stumble will have catastrophic consequences the aftereffects of which are almost unimaginable.

Howard Ratner’s life is a constant juggling act. To his wife Dinah (Idina Menzel) and their children he’s a successful jewel merchant. To brother-in-law Arno (Eric Bogosian) he’s a fast-talking charlatan who owes him a bundle of money he’s angrily starting to think will never be paid back. To various bookies and other jewelers in New York City he’s a gambling junky with a serious problem, many of them looking at the man sideways whenever he places a bet or comes calling looking for some quick cash.

As for mistress (and employee) Julia (Julia Fox), she feels like Howard is all that and a diamond encrusted bag of chips, the much younger woman head-over-heels for the guy.

These are the background elements that are an integral facet of the story the Safdie brothers are telling. The majority of their morality play revolves around Howard’s attempts to make the biggest sale of his career of a valuable blood opal that he has scheduled for auction. To do this he must avoid Arno’s violent thugs attempting to get the money he owes while also trying to stop Dinah from discovering just how much in debt he is as well as continue to keep his relationship with Julia a secret. Added to the mix is Boston Celtic basketball superstar Kevin Garnett who comes to believe Howard’s opal is his lucky charm in a heated playoff matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers, his lust for the jewel nothing short of massive.

It all plays out like a hyperactive cross between a hard-boiled John Cassavetes melodrama like Gloria or The Killing of a Chinese Bookie and a character-driven Sidney Lumet thriller like Q&A or Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. The film is

also more of a deft, passionately dynamic homage to the 1970s, early ‘80s works of Martin Scorsese than Todd Phillips’ Joker even slightly was, Uncut Gems capturing the same urgent agency of films like Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and After Hours with viscerally audacious ease. The Safdies, after already delivering a pair of unforgettable dramatic barnburners with 2014’s Heaven Knows What and 2017’s Good Times, have outdone themselves with this effort, and as difficult as their latest might be to watch the fact I can’t stop thinking about it over a month later speaks volumes as far as I am concerned.

Even if the viewer doesn’t end up liking the way the film transforms their innards into a prickly, unwieldy tangle of painfully acidic knots, it’s hard not to admit it’s still a technical marvel worthy of all the acclaim that’s already been thrown its way. The combination of Darius Khondji’s (The Lost City of Z) cinematography, Ronald Bron-

stein’s (Good Time) and Benny Safdie’s editing, Miyako Bellizzi’s (Patti Cake$) costumes and Daniel Lopatin’s (The Bling Ring) score is a collision of anarchy and tranquility where emotional yin and yang are always in danger of being thrown catastrophically out of whack. Each element works together with forcefully truculent chemistry, the Safdies balancing all of the elements augmenting their production with confident skill and pinpoint precision.

But this is Sandler’s show. For a movie that assaulted my senses and made me feel like I was sitting on a time bomb slowly ticking down to explosion, the actor’s magnificent performance is the singular element that ultimately won me over. He is the heart, soul and morally-challenged engine that drives Uncut Gems forward towards its suitably sudden conclusion, Sandler’s best performance in over a decade, maybe ever, a magnetic triumph that needs to be seen to be believed.

The Last Black Man in San Francisco (D: Joe Talbot) Since first watching it back at the end of May I haven’t been able to get Joe Talbot’s incisive, creatively imaginative The Last Black Man in San Francisco out of my head. This haunting stunner is an idiosyncratic piece of lyrical storytelling that grows in poetical resonance as it goes along. An incisive look at gentrification, culture, race, poverty, sexuality and friendship, this visually expressive drama never follows a traditional storytelling path as it goes to ingenious lengths to ensure its voice ends up being heard.

8. Hustlers (D: Lorene Scafaria) If I’m being entirely honest, Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers might just be the most surprising film of this past year. While the talented writer/director has crafted some pretty great motion pictures in the past, that she was able to bring this based-on-a-true-story tale of New York strippers just after the 2008 housing crisis deftly picking the pockets of their Wall Street clientele into an essential story of female empowerment, sisterhood and wealth inequality is somewhat mindblowing. Star Constance Wu is sensational, but it is a never-better Jennifer Lopez who steals the show, her character’s entrance into the story as spectacular a “wow!” moment as any I’ve frankly ever seen.

9. Toy Story 4 (D: Josh Cooley) All of the Toy Story adventures have ended up being one of the best motion pictures of their respective years, this summer’s Toy Story 4 included. Somehow these movies keep evolving and growing with the times, finding various new ways to explore the inner workings of the lives of their sentient troupe of not-so-inanimate inanimate characters that consistently amaze. If anything, this fourth chapter in the series brings pitch-perfect closure to cowboy Woody’s (voiced by Tom Hanks) ongoing journey, the lessons he and his group of friends end up learning ones I’ll be cherishing for a long time to come.

other film released this past year. Featuring an outstanding all-star ensemble cast, arguably Daniel Craig’s best performance ever as eccentric detective Benoit Blanc and a revelatory one from rising star Ana de Armas, this is a take-no-prisoners Agatha Christie-style murder mystery that’s also an incisive and biting political satire at the exact same time. It’s like Murder on the Orient Express crossed with The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie with a dash of Clue tossed in for good measure, all of which helps make this a joyously devilish delight I literally can’t get enough of.
