Broadway run for a time and now the 5th Avenue Theatre is hosting the out-of-town warm-up of Mrs. Doubtfire (the musical) before it enters the competitive Broadway world in February 2020.

What that means is that right here in our fair city, you can see essentially the Broadway show just before it hits New York! So, the stellar cast, headed by multi-talented Rob McClure, already celebrated for his popular Broadway turn in Something Rotten, is here in Seattle strutting their stuff in what is sure to be very close to what people in a Broadway theater will see.

There is no doubt that the cast of this show is top-notch. While adapting a tourde-force performance by Robin Williams in the film into a stage musical was no sure thing, I can report that there are some very solid belly laughs to be had in this surprisingly charming show.

McClure demonstrates his talents throughout, and dominates the show. He juggles, he sings, he dances, he changes clothes and voices and personas, and all are excellently done!

The story of the movie, that an actordad who has never grown up has worn out his wife (who has grown up) and marriage and is in danger of losing access to his kids until he decides to fake being a nanny for them, is all there. Book writers (script) Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell have stayed very close to the original tale, except that Daniel Hillard is now in commercials instead of cartoons.

Music and lyrics writers Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick have crafted some very funny and fun upbeat contemporary music, especially for the commercials.

None of those songs, though, are of any particular time-lasting quality – they just sound “contemporary.” Their ballads are less satisfactory.

continued from cover Sampson and Tess Altiveros, as well as four instrumental pieces performed by PMW’s brilliant musicians, treated the audience to a tour of Hispanic music spanning the mid seventeenth to the late eighteenth centuries.

Many Christmas concerts succeed on the basis of familiarity; how we love to hear our favorite Christmas carols and hymns, or to sing along to Handel’s Messiah! Yet this concert succeeded on its unfamiliarity – a discovery of music rarely heard, yet richly deserving of an audience. It was like opening a box of Christmas treats and finding the most delicious and unusual selection of chocolates inside.

The evening began with a poem by Mexican nun and philosopher Suor Juana Inés de la Cruz (c. 1651-1695) set to music by Bolivian Manuel de Mesa y Carrizo (1725-1773). Las Flores y las Estrellas presents a mini-drama between the stars, who think themselves superior because the child Jesus saw them and loved them first, and the flowers, who think that the flower-like qualities of the child’s lips and feet justify their claim of superiority over the stars. The two sopranos sang the three verses of this musical debate with such charm and sweetness that the flowers (Danielle Sampson in a sparkly star-like dress) and the stars (Tess Altiveros in a flowing gown of flowers) were equally triumphant. Suor Juana was writing in the tradition of courtly love in which objects in nature – representing human

played with all her might by Jenn Gambatese, is really pretty poor. Gambatese tries to help us understand and identify with this wife, but can’t really overcome the wooden treatment of the character they’ve scripted.

Better is the treatment of the three Hillard children, led by young powerhouse Annalise Scarpaci as Lydia. This young lady is definitely “one to watch” as she moves to Broadway. Jake Ryan Flynn as Chris and Avery Sell as Natalie also do a great job. But why have the oldest Lydia be suspicious and want to make trouble only to turn around and apologize before even mouthing off once? This is one of the hardto-believe moments that can easily be fixed.

Choreography by Lorin Latarro is sharp and terrific, and the pacing brisk as director Jerry Zaks seamlessly knits the scenes together. The handsome set by David Korins moves beautifully to change locations and looks effortless.

A fun innovation away from the movie is a nightmare that Daniel has of the social worker (Charity Angel Dawson) finding out he’s the nanny, with what looks like dozens of Mrs. Doubtfires. Dawson gets her chance to belt her face off, which she does with great power, but why is she all glitzed up? Shouldn’t she still look like the social worker? And what if there were several social worker types running after the Doubtfires?

There is a lot to like about this show, but there is some work to be done before they open again on Broadway. Hats off to the 5th Avenue Theatre for continuing to be the home for out-of-town tryouts for Broadway-bound shows! Here’s to #24 and #25 and #26.

qualities – debate their various virtues with wit and elegance. As the program notes point out, Jesuits from Spain spread these traditions through South America as they established missions on the American continent.

Suor Juana, and the anonymous lyricists who wrote words for the other arias in ¡Navidad!, adapted European forms for religious purposes.

For instance, shades of a Spanish tradition surrounding dwarves provided a surprising take on the Christmas theme in Guatemalan composer Manuel José de Quirós’ (1690-1765) A Bethleem a questa noche. In this lively folk tune, full of tambourine percussion and guitar strumming, a troop of dwarves arrive in Bethlehem to dance “like little clay statues in a Nativity scene.” They are described as “halfcooked chickpeas” in “the great stewpot of the world” who, even though small, even though outcasts, as “Children of Eve… have achieved their freedom.” The Spanish Royal Court was famous for its dwarves, especially in the reign of Philip IV, when court painter Diego Velázquez painted many of their portraits. This fascination with small or distorted versions of humanity focused attention on the invisible flaws of all people. At Christmas the redemption of humanity – kings and dwarves alike – is inherent in the birth of Christ.

One of my favorite song sequences was Spanish composer Juan Francés Iribarren’s (1699-1767) Por aquel horizonte that so clearly depicts the joy of the earth and all its creatures at the imminent moment

of Christ’s birth: “…as he approaches the boundary/Hope itself envies the one/Who is coming into the world.” The beauty of the music and the blended voices of the two sopranos made the hyperbole of the lyrics seem perfectly rational. It opens a window into an age of belief so deep and literal that all of creation stands still at the moment when the redemption of humanity becomes possible. And when you think of how dismal humanity can be (no shortage of examples in our own historical moment – corruption, gun violence, human trafficking, melting glaciers) the redemption of humanity from sin is a pretty amazing idea. To the composer and his audiences, Hope itself envies the Christ child because hope is an unresolved condition, whereas salvation is assured.

Pacific MusicWorks always has instrumental pieces that bring baroque music alive in a way that makes that distant period feel contemporary. Trio sonatas by the brothers José Plá (1728-1762) and Juan Bautista Plá (1720-1773) were highlights of the evening, showcasing violinists Tekla Cunningham and Christine Beckman.

The lively voices moving back and forth between them, and the cascading melodies flowing among the players is as wonderful to watch as it is to hear. The cheerful piling up of melodies and variations supported the Christmas spirit of the whole evening. A particularly welcome piece was Francisco Guerau’s (1649-1722) Espanoleta – a showcase for the baroque guitar, accompanied by the baroque harp. Stephan Stubbs, in addition to being the Co-Artistic Director

of Pacific MusicWorks is a virtuoso lutenist and guitarist. His execution of this rapid and intricate piece was fascinating, not only as exciting music but as a demonstration of how such sounds can be made thorough an array of strumming techniques. Later in the program harpist Maxine Eilander played Marionas by Lucas Ruiz de Ribayaz y Fonseca (1626-after 1677) – a welcome solo that showed the full range of the harp, with the melody in one hand and the deeper alto accompaniment in the other. It’s great to hear the harp as a full-throated instrument instead of angelic source of celestial, cascading notes. After hearing this wonderful piece I vote for more real harp music.

The audience left the Nordstrom Recital Hall in high spirits, having heard yet another terrific concert from Pacific MusicWorks. It was a concert that foregrounded Hispanic music with all its drama, exaggeration, and intricacy. It put a spotlight on music that may have been unfamiliar to many in the audience and provided blessed relief from the seasonal clichés of Holiday pops. It banished the December blues and brought light into the busy season. ¡Navidad! also offered an unapologetic view of the second most important Christian holy day (Easter is the most important). On so many levels, it was a blessing.

Pacific MusicWorks’ next concert is “Genius Unbound,” featuring baroque violinist Tekla Cunningham, on March 7, 2020 at 7:30pm in Nordstrom Recital Hall, and March 8, 2020 at 2pm at Epiphany Parish, Seattle.

The 2019 Seattle Film Critics Society award winners Parasite named Best Picture of 2019 by Seattle Film Critics Society

The Seattle Film Critics Society (“SFCS”) announced the winners in 20 categories for the 2019 Seattle Film Critics Society Awards on Monday, December 16, 2019.

Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite proved the big winner this year, landing five awards, including Best Picture of the Year. The South Korean film, which takes a multi-layered look at class and greed in modern-day society, also earned Bong the Best Director award and Best Screenplay, which he shares with co-writer Han Jin-won. Parasite was also named Best Foreign Language Film and the film’s ensemble was honored with the Best Ensemble Cast award.

“2019 was undoubtedly another meaningful year for cinema and, through it all, the film everyone continues to discuss, debate, and talk about is Parasite,” said Seattle Film Critics Society President Mike Ward. “As the movie industry finds itself facing something of a crossroads, in terms of how people see, view, and experience their movies, our slate of nominees and recipients shows that no matter where we look, the movies always find us. Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite is a shining example of a film that envelopes you, engrosses you, and doesn’t easily let you go.”

Uncut Gems, the pulse-pounding, frenetic action film from Josh & Benny Safdie, won two awards – Best Film Editing for Ronald Bronstein and Benny Safdie and Best Original Score for Daniel Lopatin’s innovative, synth-driven work.

Adam Driver was named Best Actor for

his emotional turn in Marriage Story, portraying Charlie Barber, a husband steadying himself for a pending divorce.

The Best Actress prize went to Lupita Nyong’o, whose dual role as Adelaide and Red in Jordan Peele’s horror film, Us, pits one woman’s good and evil side against each other.

For Hustlers, Jennifer Lopez’s acclaimed performance as Ramona, an exotic dancer who orchestrates a scheme to bilk rich clients out of their money, earned her Best Supporting Actress honors. Willem Dafoe was named Best Supporting Actor for his work in The Lighthouse, playing Thomas, a man tasked with supervising and training a new lighthouse keeper in 19th century New England.

The SFCS recognized Ruth E. Carter for the second consecutive year in the Best Costume Design category. A winner last year for her work on Black Panther, Carter’s authentic designs for the 1970’s-era comedy Dolemite is My Name earned her recognition again this year.

In the new Action Choreography award, honoring the best in stunt ensemble performance, the SFCS named John Wick – Chapter 3: Parabellum as its inaugural recipient.

Thomasin McKenzie earned this year’s award for Best Youth Performance in Taika Waititi’s World War II satire, Jojo Rabbit.

Other winners include: Toy Story 4, which won Best Animated Feature; Apollo 11, which picked up the prize for Best Documentary Feature; 1917, earning the leg-

endary Roger Deakins an award for Best Cinematography, Ad Astra for Best Visual Effects, and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood, which picked up the Best Production Design award.

The Villain of the Year was awarded to “The Red Dress,” a common element throughout Peter Strickland’s horror/comedy In Fabric, which has a significant effect on all those who come into possession of it.

After formation in the fall of 2016, the Seattle Film Critics Society officially became a non-profit organization in 2017, with a membership now consisting of 26 film critics, representing print, broadcast, podcasting, and online film criticism. This year’s awards are the fourth held under the banner of the SFCS, honoring the best films and performances of the year.

continued from cover way musical smash Cats just know that it is undeniably ambitious; whether that’s a good thing or not is another question entirely. A star-studded spectacle where the cast is digitally transformed via stateof-the-art motion capture visual effects into anthropomorphized fur-covered Barbie

Doll-like felines with human feet, hands and faces, this is one of the more unusual, and sometimes unintentionally unsettling, motion picture experiences I’ve had in quite some time. Make no mistake, Cats is unforgettable, the sad part is that’s frequently for all the wrong reasons.

I have no idea what the actual plot is as coherence is not this film’s strong suit. Having never seen the musical (although, like so many others, very familiar with the music,

especially “Memory”), I can only imagine Webber came up with this bizarre flight of wackiness while he was high as a kite reading a collection of poems by T.S. Eliot. If that wasn’t the case, forgive me if it still feels that way. As for that story, it seems to involve an abandoned kitten named Victoria (Francesca Hayward) who ends up making friends (at least I think they become her friends; I’m still honestly not sure) with a bunch of alley cats on the night of something called the

“Jellicle Ball” where the revered Old Deuteronomy (Judi Dench) will select one worthy feline to ascend to the “Heaviside Layer” so that they can be reborn to a new life. A bunch of singing, dancing and surrealistic craziness ensues.

little under the pressure of attempting to do just that. What is a shock is how absurdly plotted, risibly ill-advised and lazily trivial far too much of returning director J.J. Abrams’ and Chris Terrio’s (Argo) obnoxious screenplay ends up being. What they have delivered is fan service of the worst kind, pandering to its audience instead of challenging them, delivering a videogame-like spectacle that’s as emotionally empty as it is dispiritingly lifeless.

You have no idea how difficult that was to write. Like many of my generation, the original Star Wars opened my eyes to an expansive cinematic world overflowing with possibility. George Lucas’ 1977 classic led me to films like Rio Bravo, The Hidden Fortress and The Great Escape. It helped me discover authors like Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Marion Zimmer Bradley and Philip K. Dick. Star Wars made me feel like it was okay that, deep down, I knew I was different than many of my friends, that who I wanted to be and what I wanted out of life might be outside of the expected societal norms. It is likely the most important motion picture I have ever seen as far as my personal life is concerned, and as such it, along with the other two films of the original trilogy (1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, 1983’s Return of the Jedi), holds a special place in my heart that will never be replaced.

Nothing has changed much over the decades. While I find the prequels (Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith) to be varying degrees of problematic I still think there is plenty to like about

all three of them. They dared to test the audience and do the unexpected, and even if not all of Lucas’ ideas had merit each film is still filled with astonishing moments that made me smile in childlike glee when I first sat down to watch them.

As for Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens and writer/director Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, both interstellar adventures took the story of Jedis and The Force into uncharted territory while also introducing new characters worthy of my emotional attachment. They had energy, heart and chutzpah, and even if they sometimes engendered reactions of the worst possible type from angry little (mostly male, mostly Caucasian) nobodies who didn’t feel their (mostly male, mostly Caucasian) needs weren’t being catered to I was still excited to discover what was going

to happen in this supposedly final chapter of the Skywalker saga all the same.

For all the scenes that sent my heart soaring, for the few rousing sequences I wanted to stand up and cheer as they were happening, The Rise of Skywalker squanders all four decades of my affection for the material and does it almost right out of the gate. Picking up some time after the events of The Last Jedi, Abrams and Terrio engage in frenetic plotting that feels more suitable for a Star Wars video game than it does for the ninth chapter in one of the most popular ongoing stories of the past half-century.

The first hour is a monstrous mishmash of expository nonsense that demolishes most of what transpired in the previous motion picture and makes many of the more intriguing ideas initially explored in The Force Awakens equally inconsequential.

It’s all chaos and fan service and precious little else, the level of nostalgia-pandering Abrams engages in borderline inexcusable.

The basic plot concerns the rise of a new evil in a hidden corner of the universe, the long-dead Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) seemingly restored to life via the collective power of his loyal Sith followers.

After taking leadership of the First Order, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) goes in search of the defeated Empire leader, uncertain whether he wants to destroy Palpatine for good or allow the Sith Lord to assist him in his quest to rule the universe.

Meanwhile, Resistance fighters Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Finn (John Boyega) and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) have learned both of a spy hidden amongst the

Fiercely feminist Black Christmas a satirically malevolent gift worth unwrapping

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer BLACK CHRISTMAS Now playing There is nothing subtle about what director Sophia Takal (Always Shine) and cowriter April Wolfe have done with their rambunctious reimagining of Bob Clark’s 1974 horror classic Black Christmas. Unlike the 2006 remake (which is actually pretty good; I recommend checking it out), the filmmakers have kept the college campus setting and the sorority protagonists and then crafted an entirely new scenario from that point forward. What they deliver is a fiercely feminist satire that eviscerates the patriarchal status quo while also taking to task the misogynistic man-babies who see a powerful woman as a threat to be destroyed and not an equal worthy of respect.

The students at Hawthorne College are heading home for the December break.

Mu Kappa Epsilon sorority sisters Riley (Imogen Poots), Marty (Lily Donoghue), Kris (Aleyse Shannon) and Jesse (Brittany O’Grady) are sticking around, however, and they’ve planned an orphan’s dinner for a few of their friends who also are remaining on campus. But they’ve made enemies with the school’s top fraternity Delta Kappa Omega, and while it initially appeared the animosity between the two Greek houses had started to cool the four women manage to heat things back up with a talent show prank that quickly goes viral once it’s posted online.

From there things proceed somewhat as expected. All the ladies at Hawthorne who’ve stood up for their rights against male authority figures begin to receive ominous text messages claiming to be from

the school’s long-deceased founder. Next, various sorority sisters who were supposed to be traveling home for the holiday’s ominously begin to disappear. Finally, Riley and her friends end up in a fight for their lives against a lethally terrifying masked menace, none of the quartet certain who it is that is attacking them or why they are so eager to end their lives in the most brutally sadistic ways imaginable.

It’s pretty straightforward, and at no point do Takal or Wolfe go to great lengths to conceal what it is they are doing. This is a slasher where toxic masculinity is the culprit and there’s not all that much in the way of debate as to just how heinous that

sort of vile imbecilic evil is. The pair do toss in a few semi-supernatural twists and turns for good measure, and not every guy is depicted as a massive ass-hat worthy of a swift kick to their privates. But that’s all window dressing as far as the bigger picture is concerned. Female empowerment is the game of the day, and watching these ladies take charge of their lives, their emotions, their bodies and their futures is as empowering as it is flat-out terrific.

There is a decided lack of scares, and other than a well-placed jump gag that left me visibly startled I can’t say I was ever on the edge of my seat in terror. It’s also incredibly obvious what is going on and

to be reunited. Well, all four of them save Spencer. He’s in a bit of a funk. College isn’t going as he anticipated. He’s worried he isn’t good enough for Martha. He thinks his

who the culprit is, Takal showing her hand early on and I kind of wonder if I’d have felt more in the way of suspense had she and Wolfe not been so crystal clear about the nature of the threat stalking the feminist women of Hawthorne College. The director’s staging of a climactic melee also left a little something to be desired, the way it is frenetically shot and edited creating something of an obnoxious visual blur I found slightly frustrating.

Not that it matters. Poots is very good, delivering a far more subtly complicated performance than I anticipated. The Green Room and The Art of Self-Defense star makes Riley come alive in ways that are intimately haunting, the scars left by an unthinkable event from her recent past leaving the young woman an emotionally closedoff version of the vivacious outgoing person she used to be. Watching Poots rediscover an inner strength of will that will not only save herself but hopefully additional women as well is joyous in its energetic tenacity, this fiery explosion of self-empowered resilience so forceful I almost wanted to spring out of my theatre seat and cheer.

The rest of the cast is equally strong, especially Donoghue and Shannon, while O’Grady channels her inner Karen Smith as she steals scenes with her crack comedic timing and an ability to land a perceptive zinger so insightful her friends are forced to take note of it whether they want to or not. I also loved how lethal Takal is, the director taking zero prisoners as she shows how unchecked masculine puffedup bravado can destroy all it touches even when women bend the knee and willingly allow themselves to be treated like helpless submissive sex dolls. A constant state of danger exists throughout the film and I always felt the possibility that every character could meet a deadly end at the most unexpected moment, the cruel abruptness of a couple of the deaths tragically breaking my heart.

There will be a lot of whining and moaning about how purposefully political all of this is, most of it coming from the very type of disgruntled (and mostly male) nincompoops Takal and Wolfe go out of their way to satirically eviscerate. But this new Black Christmas is a heck of a lot more than a talented filmmaker beating a socially-conscious drum. Takal has manufactured a monstrously entertaining horror riff that intelligent audiences of all backgrounds, races and genders will hopefully find just as much fun to watch as I did, this merry little not-really-a-remake remake a gleefully malevolent horror gift I’m happy I took the time to unwrap.

continued from page 5 production) Hooper tasks his visual effects artists to transform his cast into these odd, apparently sexless cat people. He creates a psychedelic series of sets that are a mixture of practical and digital, giving his film a cartoonish sheen that makes it often look like an animated musical instead of a live-action one. The director strikes an unbalanced tone that wavers between states of wacky and serious and depressive and euphoric with almost no concept of how these various emotional states of being should connect one to the other. In short, it’s a lot to take in.

Hooper has stacked his cast with a number of talented performers, there’s no question about that. Problem is, only a scant few of them are able to rise above the visual chaos to actually deliver an engaging performance. Newcomer Hayward is a London Royal Ballet Principal Dancer and she is certainly memorably charismatic as Victoria. Dench dives all-in as the wise Old Deuteronomy, and I found her eccentric star turn continually fascinating even if I didn’t have the first clue as to what it was she was trying to do or what emotion she was attempting to convey. There’s also some nice work from Laurie Davidson as the “magical cat” Mr. Mistoffelees and from 2015 An American in Paris Tony-nominee Robbie Fairchild as mischievous storyteller Munkustrap, while Ian McKellen has a lovely moment as Gus The Theatre Cat I liked a whole heck of a lot.

As for Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson as the tragic Grizabella, her performance during the last act is nothing less than magnificent, and if I’m being honest my opinion of the film as a whole substantially improved all thanks to her.

But not enough that I can recommend anyone go and watch this one. This is a phantasmagoric train wreck that aims high even though it continually keeps missing the target. Cinematographer Christopher Ross’ (Yesterday) camera never stops moving, making watching the talented dancers strut their stuff (including anytime the dynamic Hayward and Fairchild join forces) challenging.

Even though General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) worries she’s rushing too quickly into danger, current Jedi-in-training Rey (Daisy Ridley) believes they must find the former Emperor and stop whatever plans he might be plotting before they have time to blossom into reality.

Rey is also beginning to wonder if her connection to Kylo Ren might be too much for her to overcome, hoping that her connection to The Force might allow some insight as to what the correct course of action is so the Resistance can survive and the First Order can be defeated once and for all.

There’s a lot more, but going into any of it in detail could be construed as a spoiler so I’m going to avoid saying anything more.

Not that it matters. Abrams and Terrio don’t seem to care about their story. They seem more excited about hitting Really! Big! Moments! that they’re fairly certain the audience is going to cheer for than they are doing anything substantive or characterdriven. All of the new cast members are introduced with zero fanfare and given precious little to do to stand out from the crowd other than to look interesting and/ or do something cool. Returnees like General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) or Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) are blank-faced bystanders and I imagine the only reason they’re still part of the story is because they were left alive at the end of The Last Jedi.

But the biggest misstep is that Abrams appears content to play it safe and refuses to challenge the audience in any way whatsoever. His film panders, refuting or trivializing what happened in the past two stories at practically every opportunity. He seems to feel content to bring back the likes of Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian or make

of Melanie Oliver’s (Anna Karenina) frenetic editing, Hooper having his technical team create a sensation of visual hyperbole that comes perilously close to off-putting.

There is the continual sensation that the visual effects have been left unfinished. As incredible (if still creepy) as the human-cat hybrids might look (That hair! Those ears!

The tails! The twang of each individual cat’s whiskers!), the backgrounds are like something out of the early 2000s circa George Lucas’ Star Wars prequels. The effects on the secondary creatures (which includes tap dancing cockroaches and tiny singing mice, the latter of which appear to be portrayed by wide-eyed terrified children) are ungainly and look rather terrible.

Then there are the unanswered questions that pop up throughout. When do these cats wear clothes? When do they not wear clothes? Why do some wear shoes and others do not? What’s with the way the sets sometimes seem human-sized and then seconds later look cat-sized? Why do they all want to go to the Heaviside Layer so bad? Doesn’t that just mean they’re being sent off to die? What is it, exactly, that Idris Elba (as the wicked and selfish Macavity) is doing in this movie and why do I find it so uncomfortably unappealing? These are just a few of the items I keep pondering to no avail, that last question may be the most vexing of them all. As for supporting turns from Rebel Wilson (looking bored), Taylor Swift (barely in it but suitably vampish) and James Corden (insufferably obnoxious), there’s not a lot to say, and I can’t say any of them make much of a lasting impression.

Things do start to become more tolerable when Dench shows up about halfway through, the unhinged freneticism of the cinematography and editing dialed down at least a tiny bit as soon as Old Deuteronomy starts the process of making her pick of who to send to the Heaviside Layer. As for the climactic sequence featuring Hudson, it’s magnificent, her ability to convey a mixture of melancholy, rage, regret, sadness, conviction and pain while singing the heck out of this production’s most famous song extraordinary. Cats might be a mess, but it’s a one-of-a-kind incredibly memorable mess (for better and for worse), and for all I know that’s entirely by design. a pointlessly big deal out of Rey’s parentage in lieu of trying to bring things to a culmination in a manner that might have been more expressively long-lasting or noteworthy. It’s frankly depressing, and I’m not sure there’s anything more I need to add.

As harsh as all this sounds I will say that Kylo Ren’s story arc is handled reasonably well, Driver’s astutely multifaceted performance one of the film’s strongest and most mesmeric attributes. Fisher, who tragically passed long before filming started, is brought back utilizing a collection of deleted scenes from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, the care, respect and love paid to her and her timeless character uncontestably divine. There are a handful of additional little moments that die-hard fans of the series won’t be able to stop themselves from tearing up over (if even only a little bit), and it must be said that while I find Palpatine’s resurrection obnoxiously silly gosh darn it all if McDiarmid’s portrayal of this malignantly venomous villain is as magnificent as ever.

The actor knows how to send chills up my spine like virtually no one else, and even if I wish the character wasn’t here his appearances still manage to be insidiously effective all the same.

Maybe I’ll not feel so sad after I give The Rise of Skywalker a second look. Maybe its more obvious qualities (including what is reported to be the great John Williams’ final score, which is every bit as marvelous as I ever could have hoped it was going to be) will break me out of my funk and make me see this newest Star Wars in a different light. Until then, the unhappiness I feel right now, in this moment, isn’t going to dissipate anytime soon, and for a series filled with the highest highs (and a small handful of the lowest lows) this is the first time I feel like The Force is no longer with the franchise and the Darkside of corporate cookie-cutter greed has proven to be victorious.

Fearless Rabid an unfocused remake of the Cronenberg classic

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer RABID Now playing David Cronenberg’s rambunctious 1977 body horror cult favorite Rabid isn’t a classic because it’s an all-time great motion picture.

(I don’t think there are many who would make that claim.) It’s a classic because it refreshingly takes no prisoners while showcasing a dehumanized world where a young woman is transformed by life-saving science into a blood-sucking carrier of a virulent strain of the rabies virus. It is a classic because Cronenberg utilizes his shoestring budget with creative ingenuity. It is a classic because, for all the social commentary, for all it has to say about consumerism, gender equality, sexual freedom, political malfeasance in the public square and the slow (if steady) militarization of law enforcement, the director keeps a razor-sharp focus on leading lady Marilyn Chambers and the all-too-human tragedy that is malevolently destroying her life.

American Mary directors Jen and Sylvia Soska (a.k.a. The Soska Sisters) tackle what seems like an impossible task with their new take on Cronenberg’s iconic Canadian horror opus. Thankfully, along with screenwriter John Serge (Dead on Campus) the two filmmakers use the 1977 film as inspiration for an all-new story instead of slapping together a line-by-line remake.

While some of the themes are similar, the Soskas are looking to explore the emotional interiors of their unknowing viral carrier of this genetically-enhanced mutation of the rabies virus with a bit more specificity than Cronenberg’s original did. They also want to scare the bejesus out of the audience utilizing crack practical makeup effects that are as gruesome as they are impressive.

It almost works. While there are a ton of marvelous ideas percolating inside of Serge’s scenario, many of them are left unfinished or only briefly explored before the filmmakers shift their gaze someplace else. There are shocking moments during the climactic stretch where things venture full-bore into H.P. Lovecraft territory almost as if the entire creative team decided to go there on the spur of the moment.

On top of all of that, Spencer comes home to discover he’s sharing his bedroom with his cranky grandfather Eddie (Danny DeVito) who is recovering from hip surgery. In his mind things couldn’t be worse, and there’s precious little he can do about any of it.

Or is there? Unbeknownst to his friends, Spencer kept the pieces of the Jumanji game console the four of them destroyed not so long ago. When Martha, Fridge and Bethany come looking for him, all they find is an empty basement and that cursed video game’s home screen flickering on the television. Knowing they have no other choice, the group head back into Jumanji to save Spencer, believing he’ll be back in the avatar of hunky adventurer Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson) while they’ll in turn be reunited with their own game personas of Ruby Round-

tragedy unfolding throughout an unforgiving urban jungle have more devastating power than it ultimately does.

Yet that does not make the Soskas’ latest a waste of time. Far from it. They stage a number of insidiously affecting sequences, not the least of which is a chilling face-off between doctor and patient where truth is an illusion and knowledge is a cudgel that only inflicts additional pain. The aforementioned practical makeup effects are also suitably grisly, the directors waiting to unleash a tidal wave of blood and guts until the precise moment they’ve ratcheted up the emotional components for their heroine to their most psychologically excruciating.

They also get a terrifically complex performance out of actress Laura Vandervoort, and no matter what sort of grotesque craziness might be happening all around her at any given time she still holds the screen with determined intensity.

The plot is relatively straightforward.

Timid designer Rose (Vandervoort), an orphan whose parents were killed in a car crash, is in a horrific traffic accident where half of her jaw is ripped off. Best friend, adopted sister and blossoming haute couture model Chelsea (Hanneke Talbot), convinces her to go to an experimental stem cell clinic run by the kindly Dr. Burroughs (Ted Atherton). There, Rose undergoes an advanced transplant procedure utilizing groundbreaking techniques. Her face not only restored but improved to the point all childhood scars

are erased, the young woman gets back to her life with a newfound confidence that impresses her boss German fashion designer Gunter (Mackenzie Gray) so much he tasks her with designing the showcase piece for his latest runway show.

Of course, things aren’t anything near what they appear to be. Rose, a passionate vegetarian who abhors the very thought of consuming meat, suddenly finds she is craving blood. She is also prone to long blackouts and strange hallucinations where she is stalking the moonlit streets and ripping the throats out of a variety of men with nothing more than her teeth. From there a rabies-like viral outbreak blossoms throughout the city, and with the CDC unable to figure out how it started or cure those who have been infected authorities begin shooting carriers on-sight instead of allowing doctors the opportunity to try and treat them. Chaos and madness ensue while Rose wanders cluelessly amidst it all having no idea she’s the one responsible for this apocalyptic nightmare.

Serge’s script keeps the outbreak portion of Cronenberg’s version, but other than a few other somewhat clever connections the films couldn’t be more dissimilar. Rose’s character is beefed up considerably, and while there is a romantic interest, fashion photographer and journalist Brad (Benjamin Hollingsworth), he’s nowhere near the focal point of the story. If anything the Soskas treat him like hunky, well-meaning eye-candy, and

instead of the female characters being the ones ogled by the camera it is undeniably the men who are fetishized here. The film also introduces a monstrous sci-fi element that incomprehensibly comes out of nowhere, all of which leads to a perverse climactic stretch that, while not exactly unique, is certainly something of a minor surprise.

All of which makes it unfortunate that this movie never fully comes into its own.

While Rose and Chelsea’s relationship is initially explored with refreshing complexity, at a certain point the latter becomes a minor narrative afterthought. As for that point where the story treads into full-blown creature-feature territory, it’s almost too out in left field to have the type of impact I can’t help but believe the filmmakers were going for.

Still, the Soskas direct their film with confident conviction, and even if I didn’t love every aspect of the production thanks in large part to the pair’s handling of the material coupled with Vandervoort’s strong performance I was certainly never bored.

This new Rabid definitely has bite, and while that it fails to draw any more blood than that produced by a pinprick is undeniably a problem, it’s not a big enough one that I can entirely dismiss what it is the filmmakers have done here. It’s possible this remake could grow on me when I take the time to watch it again. Here’s hoping that ends up being the case.

That things do not work as planned goes without saying otherwise what would be the point of this third chapter of the Jumanji franchise Jumanji: The Next Level existing in the first place. Only Martha ends up where she thought she would, while both grandpa Eddie and his estranged friend and former business partner Milo (Danny Glover) are mysteriously sucked into the game instead of a perplexed Bethany. As for Fridge, he made it inside the game, but instead of becoming Mouse he’s instead stuck inside Dr. Oberon, a strange turn of events he’s not happy with.

Returning director Jake Kasdan balances all of these various characters and situations with playful skill, the screenplay he co-scripted alongside writers Jeff Pinkner (Venom) and Scott Rosenberg (Con Air) an enjoyable bit of energetic, character-driven nonsense that’s a heck of a lot of fun. Much like 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,

this goofy lark into video game mayhem has a sparkling comedic pizzazz that’s infectious. Even more impressive, Kasdan stages better action scenes for this outing, a climactic set piece set inside an icy mountainside lair featuring a massive hydrogen-fueled zeppelin a vast improvement over the previous film’s somewhat ho-hum climax.

I also like how the sequel isn’t content to just safely do the same thing over again, and while Black once again steals the show while channeling his inner Ser’Darius Blain, both Johnson and Hart shine as well as they take on the challenge of inhabiting the personas of Danny DeVito and Danny Glover respectively. There’s also the introduction of a hilarious Awkwafina as crack video game thief and assassin Ming, her performance an uproariously inventive tour de force I found sensational.

It all feels a little too padded every now and then, and while former “Game of Thrones” heavy Rory McCann undeniably looks the part as villainous thug Jurgen

the Brutal, I can’t say the film does enough with him for the character to become truly hissable. The way Bethany and another returning character are both re-introduced into the story isn’t entirely organic and comes off as moderately forced as well, their appearance more a contrived and convenient way to get the gang out of a sticky situation than it is a well-planned plot twist.

But as complaints go that’s pretty much all I’ve got. For my money I think this is the best cinematic entry into the world created by author Chris Van Allsburg yet.

Kasdan seems to have a knack for making this material come alive, refusing to let the larger-than-life special effects or the outsized comedic performances of his all-star cast overshadow the journey the four primary young adult characters are on.

Jumanji: The Next Level continues a story begun way back in 1995 with wit, intelligence, imagination and creativity, and I’m honestly a little shocked to admit that I cannot wait to see where things go next.
