Lionel Richie and Mariah Carey coming to Key Arena in April

That’s right, the mega star will be Lionel Richie’s “very special guest” for his “All The Hits Tour” appearance at Key Arena on April 28. This is huge news for Carey fans because she hasn’t performed in the Emerald City since December 2003, when she dazzled concertgoers at McCaw Hall with a spectacular show. I was there, and I remember how she opened the concert at the back of the venue’s main floor and gradually made her way to the stage; it was glorious. Richie, who brought his previous tour to Seattle in 2014, will launch his 35-

date itinerary next year in Baltimore, on March 15, with scheduled performances in New Orleans, Chicago, Oakland, Los Angeles and New York, to name a few.

Carey joins him for all tour dates. I’ve seen video footage of the pop diva’s recent performances, in Hawaii and Mexico, and she looked and sounded amazing, even hitting those high notes on “Emotions.” So this is a show to definitely get tickets for, which go on sale December 17 (10am) at LiveNation. com, all Ticketmaster outlets, or charge by phone 1-800-745-3000.

The Academy Award nominations haven’t been revealed yet and already there’s a casualty, a rather large one in the music field. Johann Johannsson’s brilliant score for the sci-film Arrival has been ruled ineligible by the always-strict Academy due to a portion of it having been previously released, yet about 80% of the music is the Icelandic composer’s original work. Johannsson, who received Oscar nominations for The Theory of Everything and Sicario, was considered the frontrunner to take home the award in February. Also ruled ineligible are the scores for Manchester By the Sea and Martin Scorcese’s Silence, both for similar reasons as Arrival. This leaves the door wide open for Justin Hurwitz’s La La Land soundtrack, or Mica Levi’s score for Jackie, to get the win, with possible upsets coming from Dustin O’Halloran and Hauschka’s work on Lion, John Williams for The BFG, or Mark Mancina for Moana. The five nominees will be unveiled on January 14, when the Academy Awards announce their selections.

Finally, if you were thinking about getting tickets for the Darius Rucker concert at Snoqualmie Casino on February 13, you’re out of luck. The show is sold out. But tickets are still available for Queensryche (January 27), Peter Cetera (February 17) and Michael Bolton (March 16) at the casino, located about 35 minutes from downtown Seattle on I-90 East. Stevie Nicks mesmerizes and The Pretenders rattle a full Key Arena with unforgettable show

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer “24 KARAT GOLD TOUR” STEVIE NICKS W/THE PRETENDERS KEY ARENA December 11 At the start of her concert, Stevie Nicks announced to a packed Key Arena that this show would be different, that it wouldn’t be the same thing she’s done on previous tours, either as a solo act or with Fleetwood Mac. And she was right. It was different, quite different.

Pulling out songs that she hasn’t performed in decades, or ever, intertwined with fascinating stories about writing or recording them, this was a performance that only the loyalest of Nicks’ fans could appreciate.

The music icon opened the concert with “Gold and Braid,” a bonus track featured on the remastered edition of Bella Donna, and then performed the 1983 hit “If Anyone Falls” from her second album The Wild Heart, which she credited as firmly solidifying her as a solo act. Dressed from shoulder to toe in black – simple dress with matching high-heeled boots –­ and blonde hair extending to the middle of her back, the pop-rock superstar instantly drew de-

lightful screams from her admirers.

“I have a lot of family here,” said Nicks, looking out to a full arena. “So, hi to all my family here tonight!”

Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, who kicked off the evening with a set of their own, joined Nicks for “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” replacing Tom Petty on the alternating vocals. The two women, both of whom are considered rock pioneers and a source of inspiration for many female artists, captivated the crowd with a spirited, playful rendition of the 1981 ballad. Longtime friend and collaborator, guitarist Waddy Wachtel, also lent his voice to a couple of verses.

“Gypsy” was ever so beautiful and featured Nicks slowly twirling at the finale of the Fleetwood Mac number, which was also included on the band’s most recent tour a few years ago. A pair of album title tracks, “The Wild Heart” and “Bella Dolla,” were nicely folded into a medley that saw the legendary singer-songwriter donning the original cape she wore for the Bella Donna vinyl record cover in the 80s, hand-stitched by her mother.

Touching renditions of “New Orleans,” inspired by the events of Hurricane Katrina, and “Starshine,” from her 2014 release of re-issued demos and rarities called 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault, were performed consecutively just before she

sang an emotional version of “Moonlight” that was dedicated to Prince and included a gorgeous piano intro by Darrell Smith. A story about meeting The Purple One followed, where Nicks shared the experience of writing “Stand Back” during her honeymoon (with Kim Anderson) after listening to “Little Red Corvette” on the radio. This led to a phone call with Prince, which resulted in him joining her in the recording studio and laying down the synthesizers on the track.

An extended performance of “Gold Dust Woman” with Nicks draped in her signature golden shawl got everyone on their feet, as some in the audience swayed their bodies or gently waved their arms in the air to the song’s mystical, folky vibe. She closed out the main portion of the show with a longer, bolder version of “Edge of Seventeen” that featured images of animated, illuminated white doves scattered on the giant screen behind the drum set. Photo cutouts of Prince were also blended into the background during the rock number that included a ripping guitar intro by Wachtel.

Nicks returned from a brief break for an encore, launching into a Fleetwood Mac classic that simply never gets old, “Rhiannon,” but this was a more enchanting rendition of it, at least from the times I’ve heard her, or the band, play it on previous tours. It included sorcery symbols in the

background, going back to the song’s roots, as it was written about a woman possessed by a Welsh witch in the 1972 book by Margaret Bartlett Leader titled Triad: A Novel of the Supernatural. A tender performance of “Landslide” brought the two-hour concert to an end, another classic penned in Aspen when Nicks was at a crossroads in her personal life.

What made this concert different wasn’t that Nicks played a lot of material that she normally doesn’t do, but it was that she was totally in her element. Unlike her 2011 appearance with Rod Stewart, also at Key Arena, this time around the stage was all hers. Yes, The Pretenders opened for her, but this was her show and these were her fans, so she wasn’t pressured to please anyone else’s fan base, or to promote anything; aside from last year’s album, from which she performed a few songs that she really wanted to do, Nicks wasn’t obligated to sell us any new music by her or Fleetwood Mac. From her interesting collection of stories to her Prince tributes to the magical imagery that might otherwise freak out a mainstream audience, this is the performance she’s been wanting to do for years. And, not only did she look relaxed and healthy and happy, she also sounded better than she did five years

continued from cover a social commentary but an enjoyable musical as well. This show is the latest production at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre, and it should not be missed.

Based (with liberties taken) on the life of the show’s author John Cameron Mitchell (who also starred in the original production Off-Broadway) as the son of an army man who commanded the occupied West Berlin Sector. The show introduces us to Hedwig Robinson who is the (genderqueer) lead singer of an East German rock group called “The Angry Inch.” The show is Hedwig’s one-night-performance sharing his rock-n-roll music and the story

of his life. After being proposed to by an American soldier, Hedwig undergoes a sexchange operation so that they may return to America as a married couple. The operation gets botched leaving Hedwig with “a Barbie-doll front,” and “an angry inch” of genitalia. Throughout the concert, Hedwig reveals his life, telling us his dreams, ambitions, and loves as well as the hate and hurt he has experienced on the journey.

The musicians of the show are all playing their own instruments giving the full effect of a rock concert. Four musicians, including Hedwig’s husband “Yitzchak,” are in the band, and are mostly background characters. Yitzchak (played by Hannah Corneau) is a former drag queen that gave up the wigs to be with Hedwig.

Ms. Corneau’s stage presence is amazing.

She plays the “straight man,” supporting

sidekick to her star husband, with such grace that she easily shares the focus in the spotlight. When it comes to her breakout performance of “Midnight Radio,” Ms. Corneau does not disappoint, and completely captures the audience – bringing down the house.

The main star, of course, is Hedwig (Euan Morton). Mr. Morton does an excellent job of bringing Hedwig’s character to life. Mr. Morton knows how to bring subtle humor to a complex role allowing Hedwig’s vulnerability, in certain parts, to become palpable. His presence is electric and his vocal talents bring gusto to the character’s persona. Whether it is the tender song “The Origin of Love,” the comical “Wig in a Box,” or the explanative number “Angry Inch,” Mr. Morton is in charge of his character, of that stage, and

“Vietnam was a huge mistake.” That is what most of us know, if we know anything about that war besides how badly the vets coming back were treated. From a U.S. point of view – and don’t we always take the truth from a U.S. point of view? – U.S. participation in and escalation of the war in Vietnam is looked at as a huge disaster.

Partly because the reason for our participation, aka The Domino Effect, was only a theory and because so many of our young men died or were maimed for life. Money spent was thought to be wasted and we reached beyond our shores for bad reasons.

Also, we lost. We pulled out of South Vietnam in 1975 and the government fell and it all became one communist country anyway. But there are other points of view.

Nguyen allows us to viscerally understand the feelings and experiences of refugees from Vietnam without bogging down in polemics or instruction. He uses foul language and hip hop songs that express feelings that can’t be said out loud. He finds a fun way to show what Americans speaking pigeon Vietnamese sound like to natives (“cheeseburger” “McDonald’s” “America”).

Cowboys, a “geek theatre” company described as creating new works of theatre based in action/adventure and dark comedy. He uses the same kinds of techniques in this work. He also presents an actor posing as himself to start off the play as a kind of narrator and bookends this character at the end with a scene interviewing his dad about leaving Vietnam.

The narrator-playwright says jokingly that this play has “nothing to do with my parents” wink wink. While we have no idea what is fictional, we soon learn that this is indeed a story of how his parents both left Vietnam, though differently, and ended up in an Arkansas resettlement camp, knowing that neither could really go back

“home” again. It takes a significant amount of script for his father to realize that there is no way for him to get back to his Vietnamese wife and children.

The script is excellent at pulling the audience into Quang’s point of view. He feels a father’s responsibility and a father and husband’s pain of abandoning his family. But his best friend helps him realize that if Quang did get back into Vietnam, he would never be able to find or help his family anyway, and as a supporter of the U.S. effort, he’d be killed instantly or imprisoned and tortured.

A whole different example is posed by Tong, a young woman who looks at America as more of an adventure and, in a nod to the “sexual revolution” of the times, feels

Kudos are definitely in order to The Pretenders, who blew us all away with a set of favorites that included “Back on the Chain Gang,” “Don’t Get Me Wrong” and “My City Was Gone,” as a slick Chryssie Hynde commanded the stage with her strong presence like a raging tigress, such as on an untamed run-through of “Middle of Nowhere,” where she displayed some cool guitar and harmonica chops, and gritty vocals.

Yet she also had the finesse to perform a sentimental version of “I’ll Stand by You,” while wearing a rolled-up-sleeves tee-shirt, tight jeans and shiny black boots with dusty brown hair. They concluded their performance with the big hit “Brass in Pocket,” as Hynde strapped on a baby blue electric guitar and the crowd sang along to every word.

This was definitely a show that no Nicks’ fan should have missed, and if you did there are a few more opportunities to catch it. The “24 Karat Gold Tour” rolls on into the New Year with 20 additional concerts scheduled for Orlando, Reno, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Memphis, San Diego and Portland (on February 28, Moda Center), to name a few. Hedwig and the Angry Inch (music and lyrics by Stephen Trask) started as an Off-Broadway musical, starring the book’s author John Cameron Mitchell, in 1998 winning two of the season’s major awards including the Obie. It ran for over two years before moving on to London’s West End. It made its Broadway debut in 2014 starring Neil Patrick Harris, where it went on to win eight Tony Award nominations; it won for Best Revival of a Musical and for Best Actor in a Musical. The film (also starring John Cameron Mitchell) was released in 2001. John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask have confirmed (2015) that a sequel is in the works.

comfortable coming on to Quang just for sex, without feeling shamed or needing to make a romantic connection. Tong is the embodiment of a liberated woman. But she is also kind and smart and in a complicated relationship with her mother.

The cast of five is deftly directed by May Adrales, who keeps a blistering pace with lightening changes of scene, date and location. There are visuals, projections, fake motorcycles, real motorcycle, signage, singing, ninja fighting, dancing, and video.

James Ryen plays the sexy and emotionally tormented Quang and Jeena Yi plays the sexy and emotionally conflicted Tong. , Amy Kim Waschke and Moses Villarama play a multitude of additional roles that are so different your head might spin that they are the same actors. Each of them is completely excellent.

As I said, there are more viewpoints than just the American one on this war. By the end of the play, you’ll understand that a bit more viscerally, and certainly will have new respect for the Vietnamese experience of refugees here. All of that is exactly why we can be glad that Nguyen “wrote what he knew.”

Celebrating 41 Years!

Have yourselves a Hammy little holiday!

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer HAM FOR THE HOLIDAYS: JURASSIC PORK TONGUEINCHIC PRODUCTIONS ACT THEATRE Through December 24 Some people go to A Christmas Carol at ACT Theatre as part of their holiday tradition. Some go to The Nutcracker, and some go to Seattle Men’s Chorus. Those who know where to get their dose of funny know to flock to Ham for the Holidays and Lisa Koch and Peggy Platt!

Somehow, each year, they come up with new skits and new comic commentary that hit the funny nail on the head! The only people who might not have very much fun sitting through their skits are Drumpf supporters. So, if you’re not, you might get some solace from laughing at some of the aspects of the 2016 political season.

These women never fail to deliver smart comedy. A whole lot of that comes from the catchy and gut-busting lyrics penned by Lisa Koch in parody songs.

Koch and Platt have a rotating roster of characters that surface intermittently each year and you never quite know who you’ll see. This year’s characters include the Slam Poet – she of the very quiet speaking voice and the huge declaiming boom.

In a way that gives an audience that familiar feeling, the Ham shows have some soothingly regular aspects that you can anticipate. There are lots of interludes of the strangest YouTube videos from who knows where. Some of them are holiday-oriented and some are just strange. How ‘bout a clip

There is always a form of game show where two lucky audience members can participate. This year, “Are You Smarter Than A Queen” pits audience members against two famous queens. This year’s prize, three months of an ACTPass, is a really great one for people who like to attend a lot of theater!

You know you’re going to get choice selections from the Sequim Gay Men’s Chorus and this year they have a new artistic

director who is much pushier than Kenneth Dolman! But maybe his song selections are better? This year, we find out that Peninsula Housing For Aging Gays (PHFAG) has gone belly up and uprooted a couple of the members. But Tenor Johnathan has found a new special someone he introduces with some special lyrics…. And Les Miz will never be quite the same again!

Koch and Platt also bring back their duo Heartwood Mac to do medleys of songs that sound vaguely familiar, with very different lyrics. A brand new sketch has a couple of

dweebs from Camp Stillasqueemish band together after being ostracized and they’re able to rise above it all in a heart-warming moment for all of us who felt teased as outsiders.

But the pièce de résistance of every year is a new opus from the far-flung mind of Mama Euomi Spudd, supported by her always-weary daughter Wynotta. This year, Euomi has decided to Spuddify “Star Trek.” So, prepare your phasers and beam yourselves up to Spudd Trek! It doesn’t really make much sense, but if you’re laughing hard, you don’t care!

Directed by David Hunter Koch (yes, Lisa’s brother!), the long-form sketch comedies are generally succinct and never wear out their welcome. It’s an art in itself to know when to cut something short.

Veteran sketch performer Michael Oaks is here, again for the fun, along with Joel Domenico, Abbey Drake, and musical director Bruce Hall. Domenico continues to expand his talents beyond his considerable beef-cake-ability, with an astoundingly good singing voice. Shout outs to the rest of the creative team of: Robert J. Aguilar (Lighting), Robin Macartney (Set/Props), Kim Dancy (Costumes), and Lisa Koch (Sound/Video).

Café Nordo serves up an out-of-this world holiday extravaganza

and some inventive descriptions of time and how it works. There is a sort of “Star Trek”-esque feeling going on, including crew wearing Red Shirts, and of course, they die several times. (See your local “Star Trek” lore.) They even get to sing a fun song about it (courtesy composer S. Stanton).

So, the music helps a lot, both because of unique new compositions to listen to and, for some, some holiday favorites thrown in. Despite the cartoony ominousness, the evening is fun and silly and definitely one that makes you stop thinking about most of what’s outside the Nordo door.

In addition, Brindley’s inventive menu fits the theme like a holiday stocking! Baby Jesus Bread Loaf is followed by Stocking Stuffers which are empanadas made to look like stockings. There’s a very tasty butternut squash soup, a main course of reindeer pie and nitro-frozen peppermint custard.

For those who don’t want to eat a Dasher, there’s a vegetarian option for the empanadas and the main course. Allergies can be coped with if you call in advance with your needs. There is a special flight of spirits that can be added, and numerous separate drinks to choose from.

If the storyline is bewildering, you’ll still be handsomely fed and entertained by the music and ambiance. Thankfully, the script zooms along quickly, and the whole thing wraps up in about two hours.

CHRISTMAS IS BURNING CAFÉ NORDO Through December 30 You too can be part of the Holiday Defense League “as they valiantly struggle to save the most wonderful day of the year.”

Guaranteed. Of course, just about anything written by Scot Augustson is like nothing else on this planet. Which means you may or may not understand much of it besides the keen focus on jokes. This iteration of shadow puppetry and food pairs talented food creator Erin Brindley with the mental hijinks of Augustson’s fertile (and furtive?) mind.

Christmas is Burning has the feel of a live action radio play. Voice actors and musicians Evan Mosher and Shawnmarie Stanton create various voices for the puppets, along with being part of the musical accompaniment. Live actors Ray Tagavilla, Opal Peachey, Roy Stanton, Libby Barnard and Alyssa Norling act as the crew of the ship while the audience careens through time. You meet a boy shadow puppet who is kidnapped by aliens from the 1970s who finds other orphans and a Scotch orphanage matron and a cross between a Bassett Hound and an orangutan and….

You kind of have to be there. There’s shadow puppet sex, and quantum physics,

Gay City Arts co-presents: 9 OUNCES: A One-Woman Show

Anastacia Renee’ is a queer super-shero of color moonlighting as a writer, performance artist and creative writing workshop facilitator. She has received awards and fellowships from Cave Canem, Hedgebrook, VONA, Jack Straw, Ragdale and Artist Trust. She was recently selected as the 2015-16 Writer-in-Residence at Hugo House, a place for writers in Seattle. Insultingly melodramatic Beauty a facile waste of time

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer COLLATERAL BEAUTY Now playing Still reeling from the death of his sixyear-old daughter two years ago, formerly outgoing advertising executive Howard (Will Smith) has returned to work a shell of a man. His business partners, Whit (Edward Norton), Claire (Kate Winslet) and Simon (Michael Peña), are worried about their friend’s mental well-being. But they are even more concerned about the declining health of their agency, and unless Howard is willing to sell his ownership stake it’s likely they, and more importantly their entire staff, will be out on the streets with nothing to show for it.

Thanks to a colorfully iniquitous private investigator (Ann Dowd), the trio discovers Howard has been writing clandestine letters to Death, Time and Love, dropping them in the mail as if he expects a response.

After a chance encounter with a beautiful young actress, Amy (Keira Knightley), Whit hits upon an idea. Why not hire people to pretend to be the three deities in order to help Howard process his grief?

While initially reticent, Claire and Simon sign onto the plan, enlisting Amy and her two theatre buddies Brigitte (Helen Mirren) and Raffi (Jacob Latimore) to impersonate Love, Death and Time, hoping their insertion into their friend’s life might help him turn the corner.

Collateral Beauty isn’t subtle. Allan Loeb’s (Things We Lost in the Fire, 21) script is as manipulative and as reliant upon melodramatic coincidences as that

synopsis makes things sound like they might be, the resulting film almost insulting in regards to the depths it is willing to go to in order to draw tears out of the eye sockets. All of the twists are telegraphed from a mile away, and the climactic revelations aren’t even moderately surprising, a couple of them so on-the-nose I almost choked on my popcorn at the way they are brusquely revealed.

Thankfully, director David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada, Hope Springs) has somehow managed to assemble one heck of a killer cast to help bring all of this nonsense to life, each throwing themselves into this sophomoric mess of emotional pabulum with more intensity and personality

than the actual motion picture deserves. Additionally, there are a small handful of winning moments hinting at the Capra-esque potential lurking at the center of things, most revolving around Norton’s conversations with Knightley as well as his character’s brief interactions with his angry, disillusioned adolescent daughter Allison (Kylie Rogers).

Additionally, there is a bona fide terrific performance turned in by soon-to-be-an-Oscarnominee Naomi Harris (Moonlight) as a grief counselor who becomes obsessed with Howard’s case, and even if Loeb’s script throws her character under a slab of treaclefortified concrete the spectacularly talented actress manages to authentically tug at the heartstrings all the same.

I get what the screenwriter is attempting to do. He’s channeling themes and ideas familiar to anyone who has ever watched It’s a Wonderful Life or any of the numerous versions of A Christmas Carol. Loeb’s going for a type of magic realism that lives comfortably inside a recognizable world, the twinkly holiday lights of New York City helping hint at the promise for human understanding, resilience, forgiveness and togetherness that lurks at the heart of the scenario he has concocted.

But it doesn’t work. Not only are the coincidences tying everyone together tiresome, the tropes that are trotted out as if they are something imaginative and unique are just plain dumb. There is no nuance to these constructions, emergencies, health problems, marital discords and motherly ticking clocks all tossed in willy-nilly more because they’re needed to up the ante than because they help give the drama additional life. The audience isn’t treated with respect, and as such I lost patience with the movie long before the climactic reveals came to pass.

This could end up being one of those cases where general audiences and critics fail to see eye-to-eye, the preview crowd I watched this film with clearly responding to the story far more positively than I sadly was. Even so, the problems with the script and its subsequent execution are readily apparent throughout, and as strong as the acting might be that wasn’t enough to warrant enduring this facile disaster any longer than was necessary. Collateral Beauty is a waste of time, and I just don’t see myself reassessing that verdict anytime soon.

continued from cover ney’s Once, and I realize so many of them have a sense of sadness that flows throughout, a melancholic grace that tugs at the heart. Yet, in each and every instance, they also have an innate ability to make me feel joy, an unencumbered feeling of euphoria that allows the thought that the world, no matter how bad it can be, no matter how awful things can get, can spin on its axis in the exact opposite direction in the blink of an eye. These films, these triumphs, each makes me love life itself, and as far as I’m concerned that is no small feat and a trait that should never be undervalued.

After wowing everyone, everywhere with his 2014 sophomore outing Whiplash, writer/director Damien Chazelle returns with his most ambitious effort to date, La La Land, an old school Technicolor marvel of imagination and ingenuity that sent my heart soaring into the stratosphere to dance alongside the stars. A whimsical, poignantly touching musical of connection, growth, longing and friendship, this is a movie to be celebrated, a winsome journey into the tuneful vagaries that connect us all and the universal truths that love’s variances oftentimes reveal.

Mia (Emma Stone) is an aspiring actress working at a coffee shop located on a busy Hollywood studio’s lot. She lives in a Los Angeles home with a cadre of other young women, all of whom go out almost every night of the week to hobnob with anyone who might help jumpstart their respective careers. Mia is starting to lose faith,

however, and she’s thinking maybe it’s time to drop out of this rat race and head back home, the thought of one more rejection potentially more than she can bear.

Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) is a jazz pianist who doesn’t like to change his playing style or musical point-of-view for anyone, even his employers. He longs for the old days when clubs were filled with patrons eager to hear the musicians improvising with one another as if they were all sharing a single brain, each night a symphonic adventure where anything was possible and all melodic avenues were available for exploration. But Sebastian is struggling, taking gigs with ’80s pop cover bands and playing tired holiday tunes in various restaurants in order to pay the bills.

It’s easy to figure out what happens from there. Mia and Sebastian meet. They bicker. They banter. They sing. They dance.

They fall in love. More than that, though, they find themselves seeing life through the other’s eyes, their time together giving them fresh insights into their dreams and careers that they would never have discovered had they not entered one another’s personal space. It’s a romance for the ages, but one still not without its pitfalls and dangers, their ability to navigate all the twists and turns going to be the determining factor as to whether or not their time together will stand the test of time.

It’s an old story, but still an effective one, and in Chazelle’s hands it feels revolutionary. Like a combination of Demy and Minnelli’s best musicals, La La Land balances honest emotion and cinematic fantasy with ease. Chazelle juggles the varying components with rapturous eloquence,

the emotional maturation of the two main characters coming through with evocative veracity. Sebastian and Mia are real people doing the best they can with what they have, discovering they can do it even better with the other cheerleading and challenging their every movement. They, like the movie itself, suddenly are willing to take risks, and while their dreams remain the same how they go about achieving them is an amorphous adventure that’s as everchanging as the nighttime sky.

The staging is beyond compare. From Mary Zophres’ (True Grit) deliriously refined costumes, to David Wasco’s (Inglourious Basterds) production design, Austin Gorg’s (The Neon Demon) art direction and Sandy Reynolds-Wasco’s (Fifty Shades of Grey) set direction, the technical facets are extraordinary, the use of color and texture a breathless wonder from the first second the movie begins. It might just be Linus Sandgren’s (Joy) cinematography that impresses the most, however, his dexterous framings, not only of the musical numbers but just in general throughout, a divine spectacle that’s tremendous.

Speaking of the musical numbers, Chazelle eschews modern MTV music video methods as far as staging and editing are concerned. Instead, much like the Hollywood greats, he allows these moments to play themselves out so that the poetry of the movement and the connections between the actors speak to the viewer with dazzling clarity. There is an observational glory to many of the individual sequences that I immediately wanted to rewind and watch again the second they concluded, each building upon the next to shape Mia

and Sebastian in ways that are profound no matter how fanciful or dreamlike an interaction might initially appear.

Gosling and Stone, working together for the third time (Gangster Squad, Crazy, Stupid, Love.), continue to display sublime chemistry, their ability to connect with one another reminiscent of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan or William Powell and Myrna Loy, each in their respective heydays. But as good as the former is, and he’s wonderful, it is the latter who steals the show. Stone, so amazing in Birdman, so close to perfect in The Help, is still a revelation, watching her build Mia layer by layer a virtuoso star turn that’s extraordinary. Her final musical number left me speechless. The way it builds, how Chazelle daringly holds his camera on her face as she navigates through all the various emotions while singing her chosen song, each second is divine, Stone bringing many moments such of this to such organically energetic life I couldn’t help but be amazed by the actress.

There’s not a lot here for any of the supporting players, who wander in and out of the proceedings, to do, and as gorgeously simplistic and honestly sentimental as the denouement might be, the transition to the finale is slightly jarring as it happens with such ferocious rapidity. Yet the feeling of bliss I felt as I exited the theatre afterwards was omnipresent, filtering into every fiber of my being with melodious ease. La La Land is magnificent, Chazelle delivering a musical that instantly ranks alongside my favorites of the genre and as such is a motion picture I’ll be almost certain to cherish and sing the praises of for decades to come.

Thoughtfully unforced Things to Come a lived-in triumph

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THINGS TO COME Now playing Nathalie Chazeaux (Isabelle Huppert) is a popular professor of philosophy who looks to challenge her students, hoping they will venture into the world ready to think for themselves freely and without reservation. She has been married for a quarter of a century to her husband Heinz (André Marcon), the pair having two grown children who they love dearly and are ecstatic to see attempting to build lives of their own. Nathalie is also beholden to the whims of her eccentric, hypochondriac mother, Yvette Lavastre (Edith Scob), the older woman prone to calling the fire department whenever she has a health issue as she’s fearful of hospitals and doctors.

An unforeseen series of events changes everything. Suddenly Nathalie is on her own, sitting inside an empty house and charged with taking care of Yvette’s cantankerous cat. She strikes up a collegial friendship with former student Fabien (Roman Kolinka), heading out to his mountain hideaway for a brief bit of rest, relaxation, intelligent conversation and mental stimulation. As the days pass, Nathalie feels liberated by her newfound freedom yet is also torn up about the sudden isolation. But this is life, and she’s determined to make the best of it, especially with her eldest Chloé

Currently being held by violent extremist Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), Jyn’s former mentor and protector before their falling out, it is suggested by Rebel commander Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) the young woman return to the besieged planet of Jedha and discover what her father has gone to so much clandestine trouble to say.

Joined by surreptitious operative Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and his reprogrammed Imperial combat droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk), Jyn is shocked by what she learns. Turns out, Galen has been instrumental in completing the weapons system for a planet killer dubbed the Death Star, and right under the Empire’s nose he’s managed to build in a fatal flaw that will allow the Rebel Alliance an opportunity to destroy it before the machine can become operational.

Problem is, they need the plans, and those are stored in a secure Imperial facility halfway on the other side of the galaxy.

Worse, a number of the Rebel leaders are too terrified of this new Death Star to risk an open assault, tying Mon Mothma’s hands to the point she’s powerless. Jyn, aided by Cassian, Bodhi, K-2SO, blind warrior Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen), grizzled gunman Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) and a handful of fellow die-hard soldiers itching for a fight, hatches an impossible plan. With their help she’ll break into these Imperial archives and steal the plans, and no matter what the cost she’ll make sure her father’s desire to see this weapon destroyed comes to pass.

Taking place immediately before the events of the 1977 classic Star Wars, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first in a proposed series of side tales taking place inside George Lucas’ universe set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

There is a thoughtful, unforced vitality to writer/director Mia Hansen-Løve’s Things to Come that is spellbinding in its subtle gracefulness. The mind behind such films as Eden and Father of My Children, the filmmaker’s latest is a relatively straightforward examination of a woman dealing with various ups and

downs in her life with fortitude and resilience. More than that, though, she allows us to see Nathalie in full, revels in her intelligence while never shortchanging her shifting emotions as things spiral this way and that. It’s magnificent, the quiet dignity of it all having a rhapsodic eloquence that’s simply beautiful.

Huppert, having already delivered a

and a screenplay written by Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy) and Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton, Duplicity), this is as big a major surprise as anything released this year. Tough, hard-as-nails and refusing to just get by on the goodwill generated from last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens or coast on the nostalgia generated by the original trilogy (Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi), Edwards and company brazenly refuse to bow to convention, and in doing so craft a motion picture that proudly stands on its own outside of the stories and characters that have become a cherished part of movie history.

Not that it doesn’t utilize knowledge of those characters or that history to its advantage. Even with the inherent prequel drawback of knowing how things must turn out otherwise the next chapter cannot come to pass, Rogue One still manages to weave in a number of figures from the original Star Wars in increasingly imaginative ways.

While the trailers and commercials have already hinted at an appearance from Darth Vader, he’s not the only Death Star stalwart to have substantial screen time. The moderately creepy nature of the visual effects and CGI required to bring this character to life aside, there’s some superb writing as far as a certain Grand Moff is concerned, the film cementing his status as one of the most formidable villains in Lucas’ universe with wicked clarity.

But the main reason the film works as well as it does is that Edwards and his crew treat the material like they’re making a hardhitting WWII epic in the vein of Battlefront or Attack, only also one mixed with the likes of The Dirty Dozen, The Big Red One and Where Eagles Dare, a healthy dose of Platoon and The Thin Red Line thrown in for good measure. This is a gritty film, one where the stakes for these Rebel fighters is never in doubt, the lengths they all find themselves willing to go to achieve even the smallest victory equally so. The climactic battle sequences are jaw-dropping in spectacle and in effectiveness, the level of intensity exceeding almost everything else inside the Star Wars cinematic canon.

Yet it is the characters who make all of this work. They are all complicated

and none of them are perfect. In the case of Cassian, he’s a spy, a dangerous assassin who will do whatever it takes to see the job is done and his orders are carried out, his hands so dirty he’s positive he’ll never be able to wash them clean. Chirrut, a true believer connected to the Force but not a Jedi, has fallen to being a con man and a mystic, eager to get back on the path of the righteous when he comes in contact with Jyn. As for Baze, he’s a bad man who kills with dispassionate ambivalence. But he’s equally connected to Chirrut in ways going well beyond friendship and brotherhood, the two sharing a bond that borders on romantic.

But the same could be said for everyone here, as no one is perfect or entirely pure, and even if the cause they are all fighting for is worth their collective efforts what they’ve done to see that the Rebellion continues to survive doesn’t sit easy on any of their collective consciences. This includes Jyn, a woman who has seen the worst the Empire can dish out yet at the same time has also viewed how fighting for what one believes in can be perverted into something nearly as horrible as the evil you’re trying to stamp out. Her faith has been shaken, practically destroyed, and it isn’t until the full weight of her father’s message dawns on the youngster that she remembers how valuable this resistance can be and how important hope is to the future freedom of planets throughout the galaxy.

Featuring an international cast the likes of which no Star Wars film has seen before, Jones is a strong, resilient anchor, grounding things with a fully committed performance filled with depth and moving dramatic tenacity. Luna is equally terrific, a late scene where he tries to come to grips with the evils that he’s done in the name of fighting for something greater than his own moral well-being tenderly profound. Ahmed is also wonderful, as is Whitaker, especially early on, Gerrera’s crazed interrogation of the perplexed Bodhi eerie in its unhinged immediacy. As for Mendelsohn, he’s a fine bad guy, his Director Krennic a power-mad plutocrat who yammers like a petulant child yapping for respect from a parent who pitilessly refuses to give it to him.

As wonderful as they all are, it’s the

powerful performance earlier this year in Joachim Trier’s Louder Than Bombs and who is likely on the verge of an Academy Award nomination for her stellar, ferociously complicated work in Paul Verhoeven’s upcoming Elle, is once again stunning. Her work as Nathalie never goes the way I thought it would, the light, almost playful ebullience she showcases in some scenes completely catching me off guard.

More than that, though, Huppert’s responses have astonishing depth and nuance, the power of her emotional outbursts, when they do occur, just shattering in their impact. It is almost as if she is Nathalie and Nathalie is her, Hansen-Løve grabbing a camera and following the actress around as if she were filming a documentary and not a piece of cinematic fiction.

There’s honestly not a lot to the movie if I’m being entirely honest. Hansen-Løve has constructed an observational enterprise that ticks off days and years as if they were hands on a clock. But there is a lot more happening here than it might initially appear, this examination of this middle-aged woman’s life and times speaking poignant volumes for those with the willingness to listen. Things to Come is astonishing, bringing delicate truths into the glaring light of day that are as timeless as they are universal, Hansen-Løve showing just how less can indeed be more when the hands sewing the pieces together into a seamless whole are as confident and as talented as hers are.

trio of Tudyk, Wen and especially Yen who steal the show, each bringing to life characters that will likely go down as three of the best ever to grace a story set in the Star Wars universe. Yen, in particular, is a wonder, Chirrut a fascinating figure whose complexities astonish. The actor’s chemistry with Wen is virtual perfection, their interactions bringing me to tears as the film neared its conclusion as these two Chinese superstars went above and beyond in order to make sure their moments connect as fervently as possible.

Edwards is no stranger to spectacle; both his previous features proved that.

Here, however, he also remembers the human elements, and while the edge is a hard one that doesn’t mean he doesn’t allow the heart at the center of it all to beat with passionate determination. Even so, he’s not above staging some stunning sequences, and from the tropical beach firefight that reminds one of the D-Day opening to Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, to a final handoff that allows a familiar figure to utter the word that will guide the first three films in the original Star Wars trilogy, moments big and small amaze. Edwards’ best trick, though, might be how he utilizes the ultimate big bad, Darth Vader, seeing this terrifying demon unleashed to his full murderous potential as scary and as shocking as anything I could have imagined it would be beforehand.

If Disney and Lucasfilm are intent on bringing more of these types of side Star Wars stories to life, here’s hoping they follow this template in the future. With Rogue One, Edwards doesn’t attempt to redo what has come before, isn’t interested in any already established template. He and his team have crafted a film that exists inside a known universe yet still manage to plant their own idiosyncratic stamp upon it. This is a marvelous piece of entertainment, as wondrous as anything I’ve seen in 2016, and here’s my wish the powers that be allow filmmakers just as much latitude to make something great as they have done here going forward.

Author Jake Biondi previews his sixth BOYSTOWN book – available December 16! the book include the deaths of a few major characters.

MK: What will make this book different from the other five?

JB: Unlike previous BOYSTOWN books where the shocking moments come at the end, Season Six drops bombshells all the way through the novel.

Twists and turns will shock readers from the first chapter on. This is also the longest of the books so readers will get to know the characters even more intimately than before. It’s a wild ride!

MK: Tell us about any new characters?

JB: BOYSTOWN Season Six introduces a few new characters, including the series’ first transgender character. It’s very exciting. Plus, readers may see some different sides to some veteran characters as well. The storylines in Season Six bring out the best – and worst – in certain characters.

MK: I know your dream is to bring the series to TV. How’s that going?

JB: It’s going very well. TV producers Weston Mueller and Gabe Fiscale have been great to work with and they spend much of 2016 laying the groundwork for bringing BOYSTOWN to television. I’m not allowed to say much more than that, but I feel like 2017 is going to be a very good year for the series.

MK: My burning question: Will there be a Season Seven and when?

JB: Absolutely. Watch for BOYSTOWN Season Seven to be released 7-7-17.

by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer BOYSTOWN series author Jake Biondi has revealed the cover of the highly anticipated sixth book of his BOYSTOWN series. BOYSTOWN Season Six will be released on December 16, 2016. The cover for the book, which was designed by photographer James Franklin, features BOYSTOWN model Sean Zevran as well as six other BOYSTOWN boys: JR Bronson, Pablo Hernandez, Eddie Eduardo, Cory Zwierzynski, Jo Franco, and Andy Andranik.

Like the first five books, BOYSTOWN Season 6 will be available at bookstores across the country as well at online at amazon.com, bn.com, and itunes. The series is available in paperback, audio book, and all e-book formats.

Biondi is currently working with television producers Gabe Fiscale and Weston Mueller, who are interested in bringing the BOYSTOWN series to television. Biondi remains optimistic that fans all over the world will soon be able to watch their favorite BOYSTOWN characters in action on television.

I have interviewed Jake for Seasons (Books) 1 to 4 on my blog and Season 5 was discussed in the SGN’s Pride 2016 issue (http://www.sgn.org/sgnnews44_26/page28.cfm). I had a chance to catch up with Jake to find out more about Season (Book) 6.

MK Scott: BOYSTOWN Season Six is finally here. What are some key moments in this book?

Jake Biondi: BOYSTOWN Season Six picks up right where Season Five left off; however, this time around, not all the cliffhangers from the previous book are resolved right away. In fact, readers don’t find out the resolution to one of Season Five’s cliffhangers until the last chapter of the new book. Other key moments in

The Orchard of Flesh bears dark fruit

The second book in the Arcadia Trust series, a suspense thriller with a supernatural bent, completely stands on its own. With subtle and graceful building of a story, Mr. Baines’ creations of a world with vampire and werewolf elements adds an uneasy tingling to the reader as they are drawn further and further into the novel.

Taking place in Sydney, Australia the main character is Reylan, one of “the most fortunate of races that will never know the suffering of age”; in short a vampire, although they prefer being called “Blood Shades.” Reylan has a “Mannequin” named Brett, a human that a Blood Shade has chosen to become dependent on their supernatural blood source making the human permanently connected to them. Usually a Mannequin is connected to one source,

but when several Mannequins begin to go “rogue” from feeding on several sources, danger and disaster are potentially brought to the counter-culture world of Sydney’s supernatural side. When The Arcadia Trust, a group of networking Blood Shades, Shape Shifters, Witches/Warlocks, and a human former nun, contact Reylan to further investigate the growing dangers, he understands the extreme potential menacing threat to his community.

With the help of several other members of The Trust, including Jorgas, a man with romantic interests who is still getting comfortable with being a werewolf, Reylan pursues the perilous threat that lurks beneath Sydney’s underbelly.

The Orchard of Flesh is a well-written suspense adventure that takes the reader on a thrilling ride. The new approach to the vampire and werewolf genres is definitely appreciated, with different twists on the classic views of the Nosferatu. Mr. Baines’ characters easily come to life on the page as well as inside the reader’s imagination.

They are well developed with good and bad personality traits allowing us to find an identifying quality somewhere within

them, and they are all easily pictured in the mind of the readers. The storyline is intriguing and pulls the reader into its plot from the very beginning. While there are sex scenes, none are over-the-top or excessive, and are fitting to the characters’ behaviors at the time. The Orchard of Flesh is a good book to curl up with in front of a roaring fire, with a nice glass of wine, as the dark of winter sets in around you outside.

While reading the first Arcadia Trust novel (The Beast Within) isn’t needed to get a full feeling and appreciation for the characters continuing in The Orchard of Flesh, my interest has been sparked enough to add it to my reading list.

Christian Baines has written three novels to date: The Beast Within and The Orchard of Flesh are part of the Arcadia Trust series. As the cliffhanger in The Orchard of Flesh implies, a continuation is obviously being planned. Mr. Baines’ second book, Puppet Boy, is a stand-alone novel and a finalist for the Saints and Sinners Emerging Writer Award in 2016. Puppet Boy tells the story of a trio of friends and the dark paths all three of them inadvertently explore.
