Iconic Etheridge has A loverly Lady waltzes one Washington stop into Village Theatre for intimate singing and storytelling “I haven’t been this excited about making music and creating in ages,” says rock icon Melissa Etheridge about her new album This is M.E. Etheridge is touring her new works, but her only stop in the state of Washington is November 23 at the historic Mount Baker Theatre in Bellingham. She’s promising new, collaborative sounds, as well as the songs we already know by heart, in an intimate, solo performance. Make no mistake, the album’s declarative title is fully fitting – not despite the collaborations, but because of them. For this vibrant collection, she teamed with some of the most inventive figures on the music scene such as Jerrod Bettis, Jon Levine, and rising hip-hop force Roccstar. “I gave it everything I could and pushed my creativity more than I ever have, by collaboration. Collaboration is not compromise. It’s a plus, bringing in people who make what I do better,” states Etheridge. These are songs right from her heart. “Who Are You Waiting For?” closes the album on the most intimate, emotional, personal, lump-in-the-throat note of her en-

tire career. It’s the song she wrote for and debuted at her wedding earlier this year to Linda Wallem. “I opened a door to my inner little heart and wrote a song,” she says. “I sat down at the piano, started writing and the chorus came out, about how we were friends for years and years, and as we got closer it was ‘Who are you waiting for? I’m right here!’” “I sang it at the wedding,” Etheridge says. “I was able to keep her from hearing it before. It was my vows.” Longtime fans needn’t worry. The powerful lyrics, incomparable voice, indelible melodies, and blazing guitars could be from none other than the same musician of “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window.” The bottom line, she says, is simply: “I’ve made an album I love.” Find information and tickets for her November 23 show at MountBakerTheatre. com. Allison Standley (Eliza Doolittle), Priscella Hake Lauris (Mrs. Higgings), and Mark Anders (Henry Higgins) in My Fair Lady – Photo by Tracy Martin / Property of Village Theatre

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer MY FAIR LADY VILLAGE THEATRE Issaquah: thru January 3 Everett: January 8-31 Allison Standley has not, until now, been cast as the lead in a local musical,

though she won a Gypsy Rose Lee Award for her Supporting Role in Wild Party by Sound Theatre Company in 2013. Now, you can see her triumphantly starring as Eliza Doolittle in Village Theatre’s My Fair Lady. Her foil is Mark Anders, who inhabits Professor Higgins indubitably, and cutely and annoyingly throws tantrums when he’s frustrated, which makes the character see my fair lady page 8
