According to the two most recent census counts, Vashon has the largest number of same-sex couples per capita in Washington state. And the hotbed has been especially hot this year.

The currently featured exhibit at the Vashon Heritage Museum (10105 SW Bank Road, Vashon WA – vashonheritagemuseum. org) is “In and Out: Being LGBTQ on Vashon Island.” Curated by Ellen Kritzman and Stephen Silha, the interactive exhibit (which visitors enter through a closet) celebrates the long history of Vashon’s LGBTQ community. The exhibit and an accompanying Queer Film Festival will run through May 1, 2020.

The weekend of November 22-24 would be a particularly good time to visit Vashon, because a talented gay couple, David Mielke and Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma, will be performing the premiere of their innovative “Gaybaret” at the Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA) (19600 SW Vashon Hwy SW, Vashon WA – vashoncenterforthearts.org).

The show expands on an original performance by Pruiksma and Mielke at their 2018 wedding, when they shared their story and delved into its deeper aspects, using a cabaret form that combined storytelling, original songs, and theatrical magic.

Both men are accomplished actors, musicians, and writers, so the polished version of Gaybaret, developed with support from 4Culture and presented in collaboration with VCA and the Vashon Heritage Museum, promises to be worth attending.

It will be performed on Friday and Saturday, November 22 and 23, at 7:30pm, and on Sunday, November 24, at 2pm in the Kay White Hall of VCA. The weekend of performances will be preceded by a panel discussion, “Prelude to a Gaybaret: A Historical Panel on the Art of Transformation,” on Thursday, November 21, at 7:30pm. Five panelists – Jami Sieber, Latosha Correll, Leo MacLeod, Matt Baume, and Timothy White Eagle – will discuss how art helps us know ourselves more fully, how rituals offer possibilities of healing, and how to make sense of change in our own lives by acknowledging both the curses and blessings of the past.

what’s playing at Village!” (with apologies to Frank Loesser) It’s an oldie but goodie, Guys and Dolls is! The almost three-hour musical classic is so good that you can examine it through and through and still probably can’t figure out what to cut to make it shorter. That’s class!

A splendid version is now at Village Theatre, helmed by stage vet Billie Wildrick who is making her name as a musical director more often these days. You might have seen Wildrick as Miss Adelaide at the 5th Avenue in 2011.

Wildrick and choreographer Nikki Long have freshened the choreo elements so they are sharp, angled, in sync, and great fun. They’ve embedded little “stories” into the choreographic elements so you have to sit up and take notice because otherwise you’re missing a lot of “bits” that enliven the dance.

Long is also adept at determining the limits of movers-but-not-dancers so that their dance elements seamlessly combine to make everyone look like a great dancer.

That’s not an easy trick and I admire it.

The visuals are striking with a metal catwalk-type upper area with stairs down to a large moving edifice with stairs on either side (designed by Steven Capone).

They call it “the boat” as it floats from side to side of the stage allowing for the sense of travel. Other scenic elements are simple and fly in and out from above.

Massive numbers of colorful costumes are changed into and out of by the very busy ensemble and provided by designer Cathy Hunt. Effective lighting by David Gipson assists scene changes and times of day or night. Haley Parcher’s sound designs assist music director Julia Thornton’s small-butmighty band.

If you’re not aware of the story, about gamblers going “good,” it’s a familyfriendly outing that’s funny from end to end. Some of the most famous songs, like “Luck Be A Lady,” have become common fare for singers to perform.

until he’s given up gambling. He thinks one more big score will help him quit, but he needs a thousand dollars and bets ace gambler Sky Masterson (Dane Stokinger) that Sky can’t get a Salvation Army “doll,” Sarah Brown (Mallory King) to go to dinner with Sky. More than a dozen gamblers try to avoid getting arrested by Lt. Brannigan (Charles Leggett), while being begged to save their souls by Salvation Army missionaries Arvide Bernathy (Allen Fitzpatrick) and General Cartwright (Bobbie Kotula).

A dedicated ensemble of players fills out the sturdy cast. A bit of gender-bending is a modern twist to casting that adds flavor.

The “sin” of gambling is played mostly for laughs and it’s set in old-timey New York so it’s also removed in time. The religious side is also on the light side, but perhaps the timing is right to consider this a nod to the Christmas season, as the show goes into December in Issaquah and moves up to Everett in January.

and it’s a great one to introduce kids to if you want them to love musicals the way you do. Also, if you like to gift “experiences” instead of things, this is a great idea for a favorite relative or friend’s stocking stuffer!

continued from cover performance venues, scaring up audiences with ads and social media – you got tapped

by Pacific Northwest Ballet to make a new dance. Suddenly you have a large company of brilliant dancers, a huge costume shop, lights, sets, a gigantic stage and a famous orchestra – not to mention a large subscription base and all the advertising your heart could desire. Wow! That’s exactly what happened to three Seattle-based choreographers. PNB Director Peter Boal threw a long pass to Donald Bryd, Eva Stone, and Miles Pertl – and boy, did they ever run with the ball. “Locally Sourced” is a program with three touchdowns in a row. It’s wonderful to see how brilliantly these gifted choreographers used their enrichments to create new works for the dance repertoire that are unique reflections of Seattle and of our dance scene.

“FOIL” (2019) Choreography: Eva Stone Music: Fanny Mendelssohn (1834), Nadia Boulanger (1914), Elisabeth Jaquet de la Guerre (1707), Clara Schumann (1853), Francesca Labrun (1780) Eva Stone came to Seattle in 1995 and made her mark as a teacher, choreographer, and founder of the Chop Shop Festival of Dance at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. She teaches a choreography course to young women at the PNB School of Dance, and promotes women in dance in commissioned works all over the region and the country. She said in an interview that when she received the PNB commission she was so delighted to have their generous resources that she asked to have a set with nineteen chandeliers (they managed to supply thirteen) which provided the

romantic background for the five dances in “FOIL.” While I found the key words announced by dancers at the opening of each sequence difficult to hear from the audience, this group of beautifully costumed dances contained my most favorite

and least favorite choreography of the evening. Stone selected music from five female composers – a wonderful touch – but included a section choreographed to silence – an omission as pointless, in my view, as watching a movie with a blindfold on, or listening to an orchestra with your fingers in your ears. But the finale of “FOIL” – an exuberant deployment of sixteen dancers in an ingenious consideration of horizontal and vertical patterns – unfolded with kaleidoscopic precision, in the most memorable and delightful dance of the evening.

It made me want to see more of Eva Stone – fully deployed with a large corps de ballet and at least nineteen chandeliers.

Donald Byrd has been a bright light in our fair city since he left New York for Seattle in 2002 to direct the Spectrum Dance Theater. His choreography has been seen worldwide, and he is a recipient of the coveted Doris Duke Artist Award – two hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars to support his work , that is famous for being both exciting and socially aware. Though he’s known for incorporating justice issues in his choreography, in this work for PNB his focus was the fundamentally human concerns with love and the loss of love. In four beautiful movements he demonstrates a masterful ability to create ever-expanding variations on the themes of human engagement – delight and depression – with a large corps of dancers. His choice of Israeli composer Emmanuel Wizthum was a large part of the power of these dances, that expose the dynamics of relationship in its mesmerizing rhythms. In one duet – backed by four other couples – the relationship between the dancers is so passionate, so playful, and so committed, that you feel as though love is worth all the challenges it takes to make it work. There is a world of experience and optimism in these dances, as well as a cleareyed expression of the risks – the losses – that engagement requires. In an interview, Byrd described his particular method of working, using four assistants to work with the dancers to create basic phrases that are “manipulated,” in his term, to expand into larger and more complex gestures from the original phrase. This methodology may account for the sense of commitment that emanates from the dancers in this beautiful, mature, and magical combination of music and movement.

“Wash of Gray” (2019) Choreography: Miles Pertl Music: Jherek Bischoff (2010, 2012, 2019) The finale of the evening was at once the most playful dance and the most directly inspired by life in Seattle. Miles Pirtl, a member of PNB’s corps de ballet, is a budding choreographer who, with his artist sister Sydney M. Pertl and costume designer Patrick Stovall, created a dance that captures the gray, rainy background to Seattle’s particular charm. The dancers wear tunics of white and gray ombre that swirl around them as they pirouette and collapse like living raindrops, to a sound recording of actual raindrops tapping on a roof. As the dances and scenes unfold, Ms. Pertl’s drawings of familiar buildings, mountains, and landmarks scroll across a backdrop that evokes the region – ending with a spectacular ferry that enters like a character of its own to the horn blasts we all know so well.

Jherek Bischoff’s music included a soundscape of birdcalls, waves on the beach, traffic, fog horns, people talking about the city – all embracing the dancers, whose own atmospheric movements evoked something very authentic about the Pacific Northwest.

For those of us who live here, there was something wonderfully familiar in the lyric evocations of those sounds and scenes we take for granted. But I also had a sense that someone from the Midwest or East Coast would get a vividly accurate sense of what it feels like to live here. Miles Pertl may be another Justin Peck – a corps dancer whose familiarity with his fellow dancers and their process leads to a uniquely collaborative style of dance making. I hope so – this seems like an auspicious start.

I applaud Director Peter Boal and the Pacific Northwest Ballet for embracing our local talent and shining a spotlight on the gifted artists who surround us. A world-class dance company has to bring in the famous choreographers, designers, and musicians from everywhere in order to build audiences who can appreciate the variety and invention of the best that there is. But we have so much talent right here at home that it’s good to be reminded that the other characteristic of world-class dance companies is how they inspire and sustain local artists and the schools that train them.

How lucky we are to have these resources here! Take advantage of them – come see “Locally Sourced” through November 17th at McCaw Hall.

Stewart’s joyful giddiness gives Charlie’s Angels an energetic kick

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer CHARLIE’S ANGELS Now playing I can’t say I was a fan of the “Charlie’s Angels” television series. I was too young to get into it during its initial network run and never discovered it when it seemingly ran forever in syndication during the midto-late 1980s. Even though it was incredibly well cast (Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu kicked serious butt; you’ll get no argument from me on that front), the 2000 theatrical reboot directed by McG didn’t do a lot for me either. As for its heinous, almost unwatchable 2003 sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle? I just like to pretend that doesn’t even exist, watching it about as pleasurable as having one’s teeth pulled out one at a time without anesthetic.

This is my roundabout way of saying I wasn’t chomping at the bit to go see director, writer and co-star Elizabeth Banks’ take on Charlie’s Angels. Even if I was intrigued by the casting of Kristen Stewart as one of the core trio of kick-ass superspy heroines, and while thankful she filled the other two spots in this triumvirate with relative newcomers Naomi Scott (who just made a gigantic splash in this summer’s Aladdin) and Ella Balinska, none of this meant I was excited to see how things were going to turn out. I had a strange feeling there wasn’t much life left in this property, and even with an injection of new blood I couldn’t work up the enthusiasm to want to give it a look.

I was wrong. Not only does Banks substantially improve upon her directorial debut Pitch Perfect 2, she also manufactures a wittily winning script, pulled from an original story by Evan Spiliotopoulos (Beauty and the Beast) and David Auburn (The Lake House), that feels fresh, fierce and refreshingly feminine. This is a spunky, good-natured action-comedy that both respects its source material while also improving upon it, opening up the world in which the Charles Townsend Agency exists within in several enjoyably inventive ways.

Finally, while Scott and Balinska are wonderful, the film is a spectacular showcase for Stewart, the former Twilight star and current indie cinema darling who’s delivered award-worthy work in films as diverse as Certain Women, Personal Shopper and Clouds of Sils Maria stealing scenes left and right with a performance overflowing in spunkily energetic manic mayhem that’s magnetically superb.

The actual plot is as convoluted as it is pointless. A European branch of the Townsend Agency is contacted by corporate whistleblower Elena Houghlin (Scott) that her tech billionaire boss Alexander Brock (Sam Claflin) is about to unknowingly put a dangerous product out on the market that in the wrong hands could become an untraceable killing machine.

After an assassination attempt, spies Sabina Wilson (Stewart) and Jane Kano (Balinska), assisted by their handler Bosley (Banks), take Elena under their wing as they try to figure out who it is that is trying to silence her. In the process they cross paths with professional hitman Hodak (Jonathan Tucker), a murderous force of nature whom both Sabina and especially Jane would like to turn the tables on.

There’s not a lot more to add. I love that Banks has taken the Angels international, positing that in doing so there would be a handful of Bosleys, many of whom are portrayed in brief cameos by a number of familiar faces, most notably (and most importantly) Patrick Stewart and Djimon Hounsou. I also liked how stripped-down

much of this is, almost as if the actorturned-director watched a bunch of the Sean Connery-era James Bond movies, Michael Caine’s Harry Palmer flicks and even John McTiernan’s magnificent 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair for inspiration. Banks keeps things fun, fast and most of all thrilling, oftentimes appears to take great joy in showcasing a visual sleight of hand that’s frequently surprising. There’s a wonderful set piece inside Elena’s place of work where all three women wander around in matching outfits and wigs that’s deliriously well-staged, while a first act chase sequence showcasing Hodak’s lethal abilities is almost equally marvelous.

What makes it all work is that Banks puts her characters first and everything else a distant second. Sabina, Jane and Elena are real women. They each have unique personalities and skillsets, all of which they end up putting to perfect use when working together as a cohesive team.

They trust one another to get the job done no matter how complicated or impossible the situation appear to be, and because of this each of these three women has a personalized agency that’s a consistent source of intrigue and delight. But as good as both Scott and Balinska are, and they are terrific, it is Stewart who runs away with the movie. Not only does she appear to be having the time of her life, her spirited gleeful enthusiasm transfers over to the audience.

Stewarts exudes a fiercely carnal energy that’s enchanting, and whether she’s playing Barbie Doll coy with a mark she’s about to beat the crap out of, or goofily schooling Elena in the fine arts of accessorizing in the Townsend Agency’s well-stocked supply closet, her Sabina is a pixie firebrand of playful cunning and sly intelligence I was wholly bewitched by.

The climax sadly rings a little flat, the film briefly running out of steam before righting the ship again right at the end when the ladies spring their final trap to ensnare the mysterious villain pulling all the strings of this deadly conspiracy. Even with that being the case, Banks still handles all of the various bits and pieces of this espionage

caper with agreeable aplomb, and unlike how I felt watching McG’s two adventures I never had the sensation that her camera was voyeuristically ogling its trio of stars in an even remotely sensationalistic manner.

Instead, this Charlie’s Angels is a celebra-

tion of diversity and empowerment that had me grinning like a happy 10-year-old. I got a major kick out of watching this one, and I’m just as astonished as anyone that this ended up being the case.

Henry receives major gift of contemporary art from Seattle philanthropists Shari and John Behnke Henry Director Sylvia Wolf announces a recent gift of 51 works of art to the Henry from the collection of Seattle philanthropists and contemporary art collectors John and Shari Behnke. This donation includes works on paper, photography, video, and sculpture by 44 artists from 12 countries, including Raymond Boisjoly, Helen Chadwick, Tom Friedman, Ori Gerscht, Jane Hammond, Rachel Harrison, David Hartt, Aaron Flint Jameson, Jennie C. Jones, Justine Kurland, Enrique Martinez Celaya, Marlene McCarty, Eileen Quinlan, and SuttonBeresCuller.

The Behnke family’s commitment to the Henry is deep and generational. John Behnke’s late father Robert was a passionate advocate for the Henry, serving on its Board from 1973 to 1999. John served on the Henry Board from 2000 to 2014 and as Board Chair from 2007-2010. Shari and John are current members of the Henry Advisory Council and Collections Committee.

In 2008, the Behnkes founded The Brink, a biennial award, which celebrated the work of five emerging artists from Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia over ten years. In 2014, the Behnkes endowed the Henry Director position. In addition, they have long given generously to the museum through works of art and by supporting exhibitions and fundraising efforts. In 2010, they became UW Laureates for their transformative and long-term engagement with the Henry.

“We are delighted that the Henry – a globally recognized contemporary art museum – will be the home for these works from our collection,” says Shari Behnke.

“This is an extraordinarily generous gift, not just to the Henry, but to the entire Pacific Northwest region,” Henry Director Sylvia Wolf adds. “It allows us to place these iconic works in the public trust for generations to come.”

The Henry’s collection originated in 1926 with a gift of 152 nineteenth- and twentieth-century paintings donated to the University of Washington by Horace C. Henry, the museum’s founder. Today,

In between viewers are also treated to highlights of a clash in the Marshall Islands and well as James “Jimmy” Doolittle’s famed aerial bombing of Tokyo in April of 1942 (an event chronicled magnificently by the 1944 classic Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo starring Spencer Tracy and Van Johnson).

It’s honestly too much material for the 138-minute military procedural to handle with any sort of care, nuance or intimacy.

For all of its historical accuracy, Emmerich’s latest is a dry, emotionally flat drama that comes across more like a big budget History Channel re-creation than it does a well-plotted, character-driven motion picture. It’s strangely just not all that interesting to watch, and for all of the whiz and for the amount of bang, the interior human elements are so strangely nonexistent none of that matters in a meaningful way.

Granted, I could say close to the same about director Jack Smight’s 1976 version of this story starring Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda and a bevy of additional superstars.

But where that Hollywood effort made up a main character for the audience to focus their attentions on, Emmerich and Tooke

do not do the same. They trust viewers will be okay following in the footsteps of people like pilot Dick Best (Ed Skrein), intelligence officer Edwin Layton (Patrick Wilson), Admiral Chester W. Nimitz (Woody Harrelson), Lieutenant Commander Wade McClusky (Luke Evans) and naval radioman Bruno Gaido (Nick Jonas), and I do applaud the filmmakers for doing this.

Most of the focus is on Best, a hotshot pilot who rises through the ranks to finally command his own squadron during the Midway battle where he would become a military hero. He’s arguably the main character, Tooke’s screenplay attempting to give brief insights into his home life with wife Ann (Mandy Moore, doing what she can with a nothing role) and relationship with fellow pilot and best friend Clarence Dickinson (Luke Kleintank). There’s also some additional back-and-forth with McClusky about the nature of their jobs and the example they need to set for the less experienced pilots, these brief dialogues arguably the core thematic conversation Emmerich appears most interested in exploring.

The other main component of the overall story focuses on Lieutenant Commander Layton. He’s the intelligence officer who posited a Pearl Harbor attack was probable but felt he wasn’t adamant enough in his concerns and let the country down.

staff, believing his experience will be of value in the fight against the Japanese. Layton and his team are the ones who conclude that Japanese Marshal Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto (Etsushi Toyokawa) is planning an attack against Midway, one that could potentially crush the U.S. fleet. But even though leadership is hesitant to believe him, this time around the Lieutenant Commander will not be dissuaded, convincing Admiral Nimitz to plan a surprise counterattack that will catch the Japanese unaware.

What happens next is the stuff of historical record, so it isn’t like the outcome is ever in doubt. As such, having an emotional connection to the characters is key, and on that front Emmerich and Tooke come up short. Because their epic motion picture plays more like a highlight reel than an actual three-act story overflowing in character-motivated complications and issues needing to be resolved, I just never cared about who lived or who died. Sacrifices became meaningless. Deaths both in the air and on the sea barely registered. There wasn’t any tension or suspense, and by the time things came to an end I was almost thankful the movie was over.

This is a little unfair. Even if it does tend to all look like PlayStation or X-Box far too frequently, Emmerich still knows how to stage sequences of battle and destruction better than just about anyone. He has respect for the soldiers and what they went

through during WWII and this helps make these massive action sequences, while impressive, never feel like scenes from a video game or a jingoistic action movie.

There is a weightiness to these moments that’s welcome, and while Emmerich is no Steven Spielberg or Terrence Malick, he still shows just enough directorial bravado to make me somewhat appreciate all he was trying to do.

It isn’t enough. The characterizations mostly feel stilted and false, few of the actors able to inhabit their roles with any degree of authenticity. Both Harrelson and Evans do a decent job at rising above the fray, while Wilson gives the strongest, most movingly complex performance in the film and it’s almost sad more time isn’t spent focusing on him and his team of intelligence operatives. As for everyone else?

They’re not so lucky, and whether it’s the corny dialogue or the retrograde Hollywood way in which they’ve apparently all been instructed to deliver their lines most of the actors fail to make an impression and, if they do, it’s often an unintentionally laughable one. Maybe Midway will play better at home, but as far as theatrical experiences covering a pivotal moment in WWII history are concerned Emmerich’s drama fails to hit the target, and I find this disappointing to say the least.
