come out of nowhere – by that time he had been writing songs professionally for a dozen years and was already an accomplished young vocalist and songwriter. At a time when dandyish boys with cabaret sensibilities were few and far between, Rufus Wainwright graced the pop lexicon with a much-needed double dose of richness and romanticism. Following up with Poses in 2001, Rufus’s grandiose visions were more refined and elegant; his vocals warmer, perfectly suited to the aching melodies of “Poses” and “Tower of Learning” as they were wistfully frivolous in “Greek Song” and “Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk”.

Rufus Wainwright will appear at The Moore Theatre on November 14 for the “All These Poses Anniversary Tour 2018”, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of his acclaimed debut. He will perform material from both Rufus Wainwright and Poses.

The tour begins on the heels of the world premiere of his second opera, Hadrian, which debuted at the Canadian Opera Company in October. Telling the story of the first-century Roman emperor’s love affair with Antinous, a beautiful young Greek man, the opera’s subject matter and partial male nudity sent mild shockwaves through the opera world, garnering enthusiastic (and cautious) reviews. Though he may be more refined 20 years on, Rufus has thankfully never lost his grandiosity.

Jessica Price: First of all, congrats on the world premiere of Hadrian! You must still be basking in the glow of that experience.

Rufus Wainwright: Thank you. Yes – on one hand it was an incredible musical journey working with Thomas Hampson and Karita Mattila and all these great superstars of the opera world, but also in terms of gay content it was certainly important, being that it’s arguably one of the first ever totally romantic, classical-inspired gay operas, rooted in a sort of traditional sense.

It was fun to add to the repertoire.

Jessica: A very punk rock concept for an opera…

Rufus: Totally!

Jessica: Do you think that could’ve happened 20 years ago?

Rufus: No, I don’t think it could have.

And even today, I think I will encounter pockets of resistance still; certainly with the way the world is wavering at the moment. I think it’s a great time to get out there and really fight for what we believe in.

I think that Hadrian is a piece that will add to that arsenal of looking for justice.

Jessica: How long did Hadrian take, from concept to staging?

Rufus: I thought of writing this opera almost 20 years ago. But I think in earnest it’s been about 10 years that I really started to focus on it, and then the last four were pretty intense. It’s been a long-term project, and I’m pretty confident that it will have a life after Toronto. In fact, Seattle would be a great home for Hadrian. You guys have a great opera company, so… (laughs) Jessica: Your self-titled debut album was released in May 1998, when you were 24. What was your life like at that time?

Rufus: Well, I’d mostly lived in Montreal and also in upstate New York – that’s where I went to boarding school – but other than that I was brought up by my mom, Kate McGarrigle, in Canada. I had started really young writing songs; my first professional release was when I was 12. So already at 24 I had arguably been in the business for a good 10 years and needless to say I had a lot of material and a lot of experience to communicate, and I was rarin’ to go. So when I finally did get a record deal in Hollywood and landed in L.A., I wouldn’t say I was fully formed necessarily, but I was kind of armed with some tricks.

Jessica: I’ve read that you had over 50 songs in your arsenal at that time … how did you narrow it down to a single vision to present on a debut?

Rufus: Well, I worked with some of the greatest ears in the business, right off the bat. There was Lenny Waronker, who signed me at DreamWorks, who was responsible for Randy Newman, and a big part of The Beach Boys, and stuff like that, so I had him, Van Dyke Parks, and even Mo Ostin [of Warner Bros. Records] was around, who discovered Frank Sinatra. So I was kind of hurtled into this sea of big fish, you know? So I had to quickly grow myself, or I’d be gobbled up!

Jessica: When did you move to L.A.?

Rufus: Around that time, I was 22, 23, and that’s when I got down to business in terms of making my first record. I had spent a lot of time in and out of Manhattan, shooting down from Canada to try my luck at the downtown scene. Sadly, I was utterly kind of rejected from that. My operatic, dandy/gayboy piano persona was not really fitting with the more nihilistic heroin-chic of the Lower East Side. So it was really when I went to Hollywood and got more in touch with the Harry Nilsson-esque tradition and the more psychedelic world that exists on the West Coast that I could sort of figure out a strategy.

Jessica: Right, your music isn’t really dark in that way …

Rufus: I mean, later when I made Poses and I went back and lived in New York for a while and reinstated myself there; that record’s more New York, but my first record is very, very West Coast, for sure.

Jessica: In New York you lived in the Chelsea Hotel for a bit, which has a glamorous and tragic vibe. Did that find its way into your music, or suit you at that time?

Rufus: That was for my second album, for Poses. Very much, I mean – I had this hilarious experience of aching for attention and recognition and friends and so forth in Manhattan as a very young man, and not getting an ounce of it. Getting kind of drunk and collapsing alone, in bars … then coming back from California with a record deal and recognition and a certain amount

of power and having the entire island sort of genuflect towards me all of a sudden … (laughs) So I took FULL advantage of that and installed myself in the Chelsea and became a New York fixture.

Jessica: By that time Poses had been released, and you’d lived on both coasts – what direction did you want to go next?

Rufus: It’s interesting because you know right when Poses was released it was right before 9/11, so in a lot of ways Poses was a kind of last gasp of a forgotten world, at this point. We got into the whole Bush era right after that. So I think there’s a sort of almost, how can I say this…kind of a decadence to Poses, which is quite moving, because it really was before the terrorist attacks. It’s imbued with a certain naiveté, which is always nice.

Jessica: How does it feel now with all your life experience and the world as it is now, to revisit those songs?

Rufus: Well, some of the songs I’ve sung for years, whether its “Foolish Love”, or “Poses”, or “Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk”, they’ve served me well over the last 20 years. To reexamine other material that I haven’t touched in years is pretty thrilling.

So far it’s standing up really well. We’ll see in a couple of weeks if that is, in fact, the case when an audience comes in to experience it. But so far it feels pretty well built.

(Laughs) Jessica: I think that as a fan, when an audience grows up with an artist it’s so nice, almost bittersweet, to listen to songs you connected with at a particular moment in time.

Rufus: In a weird way what I’ve always noticed about my work is that there is a kind of clairvoyance that occurs where often times I will write about something that is yet to happen. I mean I don’t claim to be mystic or anything. But I do believe that there’s a strange kind of … if you are a really good songwriter you kind of hook into fundamental shifts that are occurring,

that have echoes, both echoing back at you and echoing away from you. And so oddly I think when Poses came out and then 9/11 happened I think strangely it did make sense for certain people to get more emotional, and more fragile, which that album very much is.

Jessica: Throughout your career you have very successfully moved between genres and collaborators, from so many types of musicians and such varied material, to working with visual artists like Cindy Sherman. Do you think since the time of your first two records, performers have been able to expand their scope, artistically?

Rufus: Well, I think that thankfully I was able to make lemonade out of lemons in the sense that when my first albums came out, that was the beginning of the end of the recording industry, and there was no real guarantee financially that you could just sort of drift through once you were installed in the lexicon. So I had to be more agile, and be more diverse in my art in order to really maintain an existence. So on one hand, it was through a certain crisis, which wasn’t great. But on the other hand it is through those crises that we learn how to survive.

Jessica: And that kind of artistic growth should continue for a lifetime, not be limited as it often is in the realm of pop music.

Rufus: Well, that’s also where opera and classical music were very helpful to me.

Unlike the pop world where it’s really measured by youth, and figure, and freshness, classical music is more about experience and wisdom and time lapsing and so forth, so I was able to get a better perspective of where I could be in a few years, as opposed to where I had to be at that moment.

Jessica: It’s almost as if you’re beginning a third or fourth stage of your career now!

Malek’s magnificence notwithstanding, Bohemian Rhapsody a musical disaster

laic pabulum Kasdan and company made fun of in their cult comedy is unfathomably trotted out here as if audiences are supposed to be taking them seriously. It’s disastrous on any number of levels, but especially as they pertain to the relationship between Mercury and his immigrant family, most notably as things concern his conservative father. But there’s so much else that doesn’t work it’s just stunning that Singer and McCarten thought any of this was a good idea. Even the relationship between the singer and the other members of the band wallow in histrionic pabulum, and as such the familial bond that we’re supposed to believe that they’ve formed

never feels genuine or emotionally sincere.

The crazy thing is that Malek still goes all-out as far as his performance is concerned. This is an audacious turn, one that always feels on the cusp of going completely off the rails, which fits Mercury’s rock star persona magnificently. This isn’t just a great actor taking on his subject’s body movements and emotive tendencies, this is more than just impersonating a historical figure’s mannerisms, instead it is a portrayal that slinks across the stage with tenacity, purpose and sexually adventurous bravado. Even when the film lets him down Malek still disappears so completely that it becomes difficult to know where his

portrait of the Queen lead singer begins and the real Freddie Mercury ends. He’s sensational, and I’m hard-pressed to recall outside of Meryl Streep’s Oscar-winning turn in The Iron Lady the last time I watched an actor be this superb in an otherwise risibly mediocre motion picture.

Maybe I shouldn’t be so harsh. Gwilym Lee (as Brian May), Ben Hardy (as Roger Taylor) and Joe Mazzello (as John Deacon) are all just fine as the rest of Queen, and Lucy Boynton gives it her all as Mercury’s onetime girlfriend and lifelong best friend Mary Austin. There’s also a masterful turn by an unrecognizable Mike Myers as a record label executive who doesn’t quite get what the band is attempting to do, especially when they hand him over the demo of the six-plus minute “Bohemian Rhapsody” wanting to release it as the lead single from the latest album. This isn’t a cameo, it’s a bona fide scene-stealing tour de force, the couple of moments featuring him having a magnetic urgency the rest of the movie frequently lacks.

I’m not going to get into why all of the stuff regarding Mercury’s sexuality is so offensive, just know that it is. As presented here, all of the bits dealing with his various romances is ghastly, almost as if Singer watched William Friedkin’s ugly, borderline vile 1980 Al Pacino thriller Cruising and thought to himself that it presented the ideal outline as to how gay relationships in the late ’70s, early ’80s should be depicted.

It’s just despicable, and it goes without saying Mercury deserved a better illustration of this important facet of his life than what is showcased here.

I don’t want to keep attacking the movie more than I’ve done. Sitting here trying to figure out what to say, thinking more about what Singer and McCarten have splashed across the screen, it’s just making me angry. Honestly, considering how much I love Queen’s music, I’d likely have forgiven many of the blatant historical inaccuracies had Bohemian Rhapsody been willing to take one bold, dangerously virile risk with how it depicted this decade-and-a-half or so of Mercury’s life. Even with the climax revolving around the band’s triumph at the 1985 Live Aid concert, even though I think Malek is close to flawless as Queen’s mercurial lead singer, it’s possible I hate this overblown mess of a musical biopic, and I’d rather not say another word about it.

they’re comforted by that, or inspired, or it makes them think a little bit more. I think at the end of the day just being able to bring happiness to people means that I’m doing good. Not a lot of people get to do that in their lives, in their work.

Jessica: As someone that has struggled with addiction and sexual assault, is it heartening to see that despite the current infighting in our country, people are speaking to each other more openly about their traumas and experiences?

Rufus: I think the rubber is definitely hitting the road in terms of recognizing the reality of the way the world is for most people. Whether the tires are going to spin off the car I’m not sure. But we have to get to the bottom of this, and whether it’s the environment or women’s rights or gay rights, all of this must be fought for, and won over. That’s just the way everything is in life. Nothing just happens, it has to be created.

Jessica: And how is it raising a daughter?

Rufus: Oh, it’s amazing! That’s the one area in life where I thankfully have no idea how it’s going to turn out. I have been so cognizant of my moves over the years. It’s nice to have that little bit of chaos that you can never

put your finger on. So kids give you that constant surprise, which is important.

Jessica: Do you think it’s more difficult or scary now than when we were kids?

Rufus: I think it’s very different; I also think it’s very the same. I think the one variable though is technology now. A child growing up with the world being so digitalized, I do worry about what that does. But I don’t know. I suppose us having TVs was the same situation, so we’ll see. Just as long as they practice the piano a little bit too.

Jessica: So next up for you is the “All These Poses Anniversary Tour,” and then the “Noel Nights” shows in New York City and tours of Australia and Europe. Is there a new album in the works?

Rufus: Yes, yes! Throughout all of this I’ve been in the studio with the great Mitchell Froom working on my new record, which I’m very excited to release, probably next year at this point. I think it’s important that I remind both myself and the world that I am a songwriter and I have been processing this whole rigmarole. (Laughs) Jessica: From all this chaos, certainly we’ll be seeing a lot of remarkable art and music. We’re counting on you, Rufus.

Rufus: Yes, a lot of music, a lot of art, let’s see if it sticks to the wall.

Jessica: Do you feel like the landscape has changed for artists putting themselves out there today?

Rufus: Well, I think that everything has changed, and nothing has changed. Certainly, there’s more opportunity in terms of technology and the Internet and really getting your material out there. A lot of the old constructs have now dissolved and you no longer need to be courted by an industry.

But that being said, I think at the end of the day it really still boils down to practicing, and focusing on what you want to do, and forgetting about your position or what you think you deserve and what you think the world owes you. Just really working on the art itself. I think if you just stick to that latter concept, you’ll be fine.

Jessica: One final question. What piece of advice would you give to yourself 20 years ago?

Rufus: What piece of advice … hmm.

I would say just, I mean this is going to sound really gay, which is probably appropriate: Go to the gym more, it’s not that hard. (Laughs)

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY Now playing I’m not going to say that Bohemian Rhapsody is the worst film of 2018. I will say it is the year’s most disappointing release to come out of a major Hollywood studio this year, this biography of legendary singer Freddie Mercury chronicling Rock ‘n’ Roll supergroup Queen in the 1970s and ’80s an inept melodramatic slog that never met a troubled musician cliché it didn’t want to enthusiastically embrace with open arms.

Even more frustrating, it wastes a titanic, suitably larger-than-life turn from Rami Malek as Mercury that is gutsy, daring and overflowing in carnal, sexually ambiguous charisma. It’s the type of once-in-a-lifetime performance every actor dreams of giving, and for Malek it’s unfortunate that he gives one in a motion picture as instantly forgettable as this sadly proves to be.

Forget about the film’s behind-thescenes travails, which resulted in the firing of director Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, X-Men) just weeks before production wrapped and the handing of the project over to Dexter Fletcher for completion.

The real problem is the script approved by Queen band members Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. Working from a story he conceived with Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon), Anthony McCarten’s (The Theory of Everything, Darkest Hour) screenplay is an outright disaster. It falls all over itself reveling in any number of biopic tropes that one wonders if he watched Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story back in 2007 and thought Jake Kasdan, Judd Apatow and John C. Reilly meant for audiences to take their low budget satirical comedy seriously.

It’s like he didn’t get that it was a parody and instead used it as the template for his script here, and as such taking any of what happens regarding Mercury and his Queen bandmates seriously is virtually impossible.

I’m not the first one to make the Walk Hard comparison, and I really hate trotting out an idea a number of others have already hit on before I had the chance to write about the film myself. But these similarities are just so blatantly obvious it just seems apt to call them out. Every tired piece of formu-

Sabbath, and with Obama’s election you were incredibly positive and excited. Now that we’ve gone backwards in so many ways … how do you keep yourself on track, and connect with humanity? How do you cope?

Rufus: What I have to constantly remind myself of is that I’m very, very honored and very humbled and very fortunate to be able to bring happiness to people. I just did a bunch of shows in the deep Midwest, so I was in North and South Dakota singing, and you know, that’s really the battleground for the soul of this country. I was able to on one hand speak my mind in a respectful way – I didn’t go in there and tell them what to do necessarily, my strategy was to let them know that my initial feeling every time I go to that part of the country was that people are innately good there, and they’re decent, and they have Christian values for the most part … and we should start to really, you know, live by that (laughs) in this tempestuous time. Then I kind of give out the message, and I sing a nice song, and

yet reflect that many unknowable connections can draw us together.

Carl presents as homeless… a rangy, hyperactive, rootless guy who likely would be diagnosed with ADD and/or on the autism spectrum today. 25 years ago, when this play was first produced, that kind of diagnosis would be less useful and with fewer medical supports.

Jody presents as a more mainstream business owner, a map store owner, but one who, more and more, cannot leave the store to face what’s outside in the big world. At the beginning of this “relationship play,” Jody seems to tolerate Carl, even as he

tickets and become the longest-running solo comedy show in the history of Las Vegas.

She has been named Las Vegas’s “Comedian of the Year” nine years in a row and in 2006, received The Nevada Ballet’s “Woman of the Year” Award.

Rudner’s first solo HBO special, “Rita Rudner’s One Night Stand,” was nominated for several awards, as was her eponymous English BBC television show that later appeared in the USA on A&E. Rudner’s two one-hour specials for HBO, “Born To Be Mild” and “Married Without Children,” were ratings standouts and she performed all over the country, filling Carnegie Hall in New York three times and the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles twice.

It was watching one of those HBO specials that I became a fan of Rudner and who could forget her in the 1992 film, Peter’s Friends? This past week, I had a chance to send questions to Rudner via email.

knows Carl’s foibles, like lying and not taking “no” for an answer.

It starts with a chair. A chair just shows up in the map shop. Jody knows where it must have come from, but not why it appeared.

While we all know that AIDS devastated the Gay community in the late ’80s and early ’90s, that might be all younger people know.

Or even all that older people know if they did not pay attention to this scourge at the time. Now, even though this play could be considered a “period piece,” it’s a reminder, a rather subtle one, of the incredible pace of death that surrounded Gay communities.

Particularly taking away vibrant YOUNG adults, many from the most creative endeavors of our society – theater, dance, art, music.

The chairs begin to pile up. Carl is bringing them to Jody’s shop because Carl doesn’t

have anywhere else to store them. At first we don’t know why Jody is tolerating this, but eventually, it’s really clear that Jody understands, too, who these chairs belong to and why they are important chairs.

In Carl’s despair, these are his mementoes of people who have died. He can’t bring himself to entirely erase the belongings of people he knows. The collection is his way to honor and remember. Jody, too, is helpless to do anything except allow the chairs to accumulate.

Dietz wanted to explore, per his note in the program, what a life adds up to – what a life leaves behind. His answer was: friends.

This is a quiet and desperate play and the tech support is crucial. Delicate lighting from Rick Paulsen and vigorous or melodic soundscapes from Robertson Witmer com-

The play asks us to contemplate the same issue as Dietz did. What is a life?

What does it stack up to? What do we leave behind and what is our “legacy”? I suspect every answer will be different for each person.

MK Scott: Now you are coming and playing at the Federal Way Performing Arts Center, which is an incredible venue by the way. What can we expect from the show?

Rita Rudner: Lots of jokes you haven’t heard before and maybe some you’ve heard, but you won’t remember that you’ve heard them and you’ll think they’re new.

MK: You have had a career that has spanned five decades. I remember seeing one of your HBO specials. What has been the highlight of your career? (Broadway, film, stand-up, author?)

Rudner: Winning the Oscar and getting to work with Robert de Niro. Oh no, that’s Meryl Streep. I get us mixed up. I’m not one to look backwards. It hurts my neck. I prefer forwards. Today my interview with Marc Maron ran on his WTF podcast and next summer I’m performing in a musical in New York.

MK: You are one of the legendary funny ladies that include Bette Midler, Joan Rivers and Phyllis Diller. What did you learn from them over the years?

Rudner: Friends with them all. I met Bette when we were both in Las Vegas. Joan and I shared a theatre at The Venetian in Las

Vegas. And Phyllis and I did a film together, plus I have one of Phyllis’s paintings hanging in my house. The quality we all have in common is tenacity, which all women in show business need. Except for Meryl Streep.

MK: I read that you enjoy Jewish humor and really admired the comedy of Woody Allen and Jack Benny. Can you elaborate?

Rudner: Woody Allen and Jack Benny are Jewish? I had no idea. I don’t like differentiating humor. It’s either funny or not funny.

MK: Who in comedy today do you admire the most from Joy Behar to Kathy Griffin to Amy Schumer?

Rudner: I love everybody equally.

MK: In 1992, you and your husband wrote and produced Peter’s Friends that was a critically acclaimed hit. Is film something that you want to go back into at some point?

Rudner: No. I like to watch films. Especially now that I get a senior discount. I like working live. That’s my metier. With film, there’s too much time spent waiting in trailers, and you have to get up too early.

MK: How many more years are you expected to perform in Vegas?

Rudner: I’ve reduced my schedule

recently and now that my daughter is a teenager, she likes it when I travel! Hence, my visit to your city. While I’m telling jokes, she’ll probably be having a party.

MK: What is your feeling about the current political climate under the administration of Trump?

Rudner: I find I’m taking a lot more antacids. I think everyone is overloaded on politics currently. So I don’t talk politics at all in my act because I think everyone, including me, needs a break.

MK: My burning question is: As I mentioned at the beginning, you have done film, theater, books, stand-up, etc. Is there anything more that you want to do in your career that you haven’t had a chance to do yet?

Rudner: Trapeze.

continued from cover Kyle Davis. It was an opening night of sheer excitement. I’ve never heard the audience chatter and bubble so much at intermissions.

The pressroom was unusually crowded, loud, and animated. It was as if everyone had touched an electric fence and gotten a jolt of amazement.

Each of these three dances challenged and entertained us in three entirely different ways, from awe to sighs to laughter – and each was completely successful. Here are my impressions in the order of presentation: “A Dark and Lonely Space” Choreography: Kyle Davis Music: Michael Giacchino The musical forces for this creation story of a dance might have overwhelmed less carefully constructed choreography.

PNB Music Director and Principal Conductor, Emil de Cou, led an orchestra of 100 players and a chorus of 80 singers from the Pacific Lutheran University Choral Union in an opening sound blast that conveyed the creation of a universe (or galaxy, or star system, or planet … something enormous).

The singers were arranged in four audience boxes high along the sides of McCaw Hall; the orchestra included an unusual complement of percussion and horns. One soprano,

Christina Siemens, was onstage the entire time as the creative force in a huge planetlike construction. The effect was fantastic – an announcement of gigantism that might have daunted a lesser choreographer than Kyle Davis. I have never seen any of the works Davis has created for PNB’s NEXT STEP and School programs, but his debut on the main stage was many things: audacious, brave, fascinating, and gorgeous.

We learned in a pre-opening discussion that Davis is a fan of composer Michael Giacchino’s work and requested something to set a dance to. Instead of the ten or fifteen minutes of music Davis hoped for, he got a 45-minute symphony. Giacchino created his “Jupiter Ascending Symphony” for a film of the same name, and PNB had the confidence to invest the resources of 24 dancers, costumes by company principal Elizabeth Murphy, Reed Nakayama’s mysterious scenic and lighting designs, and massive musical resources to realize Davis’ debut. It was a smart move by PNB’s Artistic Director, Peter Boal, who now has a work of great complexity and beauty, and a choreographer whose talent is as promising as the vast scenario of his ballet.

I use the term “ballet” because Davis works within the classical vocabulary that he himself has mastered as a soloist and prize-winning dancer (Prix de Laussane, 2008). Yet in a current trend of mixing dance genres he uses the barefooted-mod-

ern technique for four mysterious figures who weave in and out of the creation scenario with the long gowns and dramatic full-bodied gestures that evoke Martha Graham. There is also a narrative semipantomime character – an amorphous creation seeking identity, danced barefooted

by Leta Biasucci and her double, Rachel Foster (roles danced by men in an alternate cast). Their female duet – (alternately male duet) – is angularly tender, awkward and coordinated as the figures get used to being alive. Their presence marks a longdeveloping trend in choreography of samesex duets – unconventional, but conjuring human realities formerly hidden. I remember the first all-male love duet I ever saw on a main stage. It was Rudolph Nureyev’s choreography of Romeo and Juliet when Romeo and a partner – Benvolio? Mercutio? Tybalt? – can’t recall – dance with each other as only men and women had before.

This was at the American Ballet Theater – 1979 – very new, even shocking, and it has taken a long time for ballet choreographers to exploit what now seems like an obvious and enriching direction in which to move.

But the real glory of this production, in my opinion, is how Davis has manipulated the corps de ballet – the other twenty dancers who enter and exit in fascinatingly regimented groups, break into graphic patterns of arms and legs, and whirl around like cosmic dark matter. They’re even dressed as

dark matter in this very outer-spacey universe. For a work this massive it was important to construct dances-within-dances to vary the pace and interest as the music unfolds. For my money, though, I was fascinated by the corps and could watch Davis’ group dances all day. My dance buddy for the evening summed up the total effect when the lights went up: “If it never ended I’d die happy!”

“Silent Ghost” Choreography: Alejandro Cerrudo Music: Dustin Hamman, King Creosote & Jon Hopkins, Olafur Amalds, Nils Frahm It’s hard to imagine what could follow all that overwhelming bigness, but Alejandro Cerrudo’s “Silent Ghost” for ten dancers in various configurations was a perfect follow-up. I have no idea what the title means – it could have been called “Dance X” and still have been as moving to watch.

Cerrudo’s “Little Mortal Dance” was the hit of PNB’s Director’s Choice in 2016, so it was a real joy to see this wonderful dancemaker return. He’s developed many of his signature moves, especially the semaphore movements of the arms in which the dancers perform the simultaneous complexities together against a blank backdrop – almost like shadow figures. In “Silent Ghost” we see bird-like forms appear and disintegrate to compelling, sinuous music. In the open-

ing sequence, as men take shapes that freeze and melt away, we see two dancers bent at the waist, arms outstretched, undulating from the hips to the finger-tips as if they were wands of kelp in a gentle stream. The inventions are too numerous and flowing to even remember, much less describe, but the unforgettable duet that ends the dance is so seamless, surprising, and elegant in its lifts, carries, and partnering that you can see what love is. That sounds corny, I know – but it’s the truth. My dance buddy turned to me at the end and said, “It gives me a reason to live to next Thursday.” I imagine that if he were to see Cerrudo’s work every Thursday, he might live forever – or at least die happy.

“Cacti” Choreography: Alexander Ekman Music: Franz Josph Hayden, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert This hilarious dance was the perfect ending to an amazing program. Sixteen dancers – all dressed in asexual pants and skin suits – do an opening sequence in which they’re alternately confined and attached to individual white squares that they use as percussion instruments, dance platforms, and walls to hide behind and pop out from. The dance is a send-up of critical analysis, opening with a voice-over of a plummy-voiced critic who uses all the jargon that gets ridiculed by non-academics.

(The academics in the audience – of which I am one – understood the critique perfectly, but the language of critical theory sounds laughably pretentious in any setting other than academic conferences). A “critic” in a classic pose walks slowly through the crowd of wildly gesturing dancers while the voice-over expounds on deeper meaning – a joke that returns at the end of the dance when everyone is fully “naked” in skin suits and posing with potted cacti on their heads like caryatids and statues of Greek gods and goddesses.

Yet even without the framework of meaning versus meaninglessness, this dance is a winner. The endless variation of individual movements amaze with their

inventiveness, then amaze further when they snap into simultaneous gestures – sometimes kneeling with upper body dances and sometimes with full-body choreography as simple as running in place – which, in this case, created a wonderful effect as the lights isolate one group “running” in one direction, then another in the opposing direction, then the whole group describing a sort of running wallpaper – all to the drama of Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden.”

So, at the risk of being a critic with a plummy voice, I can’t help but notice that the first section is choreographed to Hayden’s string quartet “The seven last words of Christ” (hardly cheerful) and the last section is inspired by a memento mori, “the dance of death” that Schubert completed in 1824 to confront his own coming death from syphilis in 1828. And while the Beethoven contribution is from his glorious “middle” period, it’s described as “melancholy” by musicologists. All of this is in contrast to the delight and humor of the dance itself – a reality that includes a young couple coaching each other through a duet that is entertaining in its conversational ordinariness and its clever, expert dancing. Thus, (we critics like to say “thus”), the humor of the dance rubs up against the serious subtext of the music (we also like to say “subtext”) so that it isn’t only funny – it’s grounded in the ironic humor of mortality.

How’s that for a plummy critique? But it’s true – a brilliantly funny, melancholy, revelatory dance that pretends to be less observant and serious than it is.

So just in case you haven’t got the message, you’d be crazy to miss this one – or, put another way, if you only go to one dance concert this year go to “All Premiere” at PNB, performed at McCaw Hall through November 11.

OK, OK, go to The Nutcracker, too – but seriously, you won’t see better dances all together in one place as PNB’s “All Premiere.” Bravi, tutti!

Imaginative possession drama Mercy a welcome surprise

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer WELCOME TO MERCY Now playing After returning home to a remote corner of Latvia when her father (Andrey Yahimovich) falls deathly ill, single mother Madaline (Kristen Ruhlin) suddenly begins to showcase violent signs of the stigmata. Urged by her childhood priest Father Joseph (Juris Strenga) to get help before she inadvertently hurts someone, likely either her estranged mother Alyona (Ieva Seglina) or her beloved daughter Willow (Sophia Massa), the young woman agrees to be taken to the secluded island convent Mercy to be treated by their Mother Superior (Eileen Davies). She is familiar with the family’s complex theological history and as such she’s certain she can be of service to Madaline.

But where showcasing elements of the stigmata is oftentimes more of a blessing than it is a curse, this is unfortunately not one of those instances. Madaline, an atheist who gave up on her religious beliefs as a child when her parents sent her away to be raised abroad, isn’t happy about being separated from her daughter and forced to live in an isolated convent. Additionally, her bouts of bloody supernatural behavior appear to be born from demonic possession and deep-rooted familial trauma more than they do anything godly or virtuous, and as such overcoming this affliction will prove to be difficult. Only Mercy novitiate August (Lily Newmark) seems willing to listen to the young mother’s pleas for help with anything approaching genuine concern, the two women quickly forming a close, almost unbreakable bond that might be doing Madaline more harm than good.

I give Welcome to Mercy all kinds of credit for attempting to put its own uniquely imaginative spin on the demonic possession story. Director Tommy Bertelsen (Feed) and writer/star Ruhlin go out of their way to ground events in a heartfelt, complex emotionalism that is born from unimaginable tragedy, allowing Madaline’s story to be more about concepts of forgiveness, sacrifice and regret more than it has to do with

anything purely supernatural. It’s an interesting take on this horror subgenre, giving things a little more character-driven gravitas than they otherwise might have had.

Is it enough? That’s hard to say. I never felt as deeply as connected to what Madaline was going through as I kept wanting to be, and as committed as Ruhlin is to giving a frazzled, psychologically discombobulated performance, I still had trouble caring about what was happening to her. The script the actress has composed is almost too indistinct and ephemeral, and while I appreciate that she and Bertelsen trust their audience to assemble this puzzle for themselves, they’ve made it so difficult to do so putting forth the effort to put the pieces all together isn’t always worthwhile.

But the ambiance that the director manages to concoct is sensational. Bertelsen creates an air of uncertainty that fits Madaline’s wavering mental state perfectly. This might be the first time I can recall a film dealing with possession where the primary point-of-view is of the person who is

currently under demonic assault. For the majority of the story the audience must see things through Madaline’s eyes, joining her as she attempts to figure out what is going on with her as she tries to determine who she can trust and whether or not she’s as much of a threat to her daughter as those at the Mercy convent keep trying to make her believe she is.

The effect of tackling this story in this a fashion is that it allows the twists and turns of the final act to not feel cheap or inauthentic. It also ratchets up the emotional content to a level that I did not anticipate. This movie becomes more about the lengths that parents will go to in order to keep their children safe from harm more than it does anything else. It is also a tale about the search for forgiveness, Alyona ultimately far from the uncaring, self-centered mother she purposefully allowed Madaline to believe she was for most of her daughter’s life. The final 15 minutes are explosive, not so much for their scares (there really aren’t any) but because of the way Bertelsen and Ruhlin so

deftly pull at the viewer’s heartstrings. It’s pretty stunning, asking questions regarding faith, religion, parenthood and self-sacrifice I found incredibly moving.

I could have done without the film’s final scene, a standard fade to black that’s only there to be something of a final stinger designed to send the audience out of the theatre reeling from one last little scare.

It’s a dumb add-on that also has the unintended side effect of diluting the emotive power of the events of the climax, this little coda playing to the sort of stale genre tropes the filmmakers had managed for the most part to avoid up until this point. Still, I really liked all of the risks the movie takes as it presents its tale of family tragedy and demonic possession. Bertelsen and Ruhlin should be commended for their ingenuity and imagination, and even if Welcome to Mercy doesn’t get everything right, this still manages to be an effective, characterdriven shocker I feel is worthy of a look.

Forgettable Spider’s Web a lackluster return of the girl with a dragon tattoo

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB Now playing It’s been three years since hacker and cybernetic vigilante Lisbeth Salander (Claire Foy) spoke with journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Sverrir Gudnason), his last story chronicling her selfless heroics while also dissecting her family’s sordid criminal history driving a wedge between them that has left their friendship on the edge of collapse. But she needs him now. Lisbeth agreed to help scientist Franz Balder (Stephen Merchant) steal his latest program, codename “Firefall,” back from the American government for whom he designed it for. But he feels it is too dangerous for them, let alone anyone, to possess, and wants to see it destroyed before it can be utilized.

Initially successful, Firefall is taken by mysterious assailants and Lisbeth’s hidden warehouse home is destroyed. She needs Mikael’s assistance to figure out who it was that attacked her, and she’s willing to put their disagreements aside so they can work together as they have done in the past.

Thing is, they’re not the only ones trying to get their hands on Firefall. American operative Edwin Needham (Lakeith Stanfield), who worked with Balder to create the program, has come to Sweden to reclaim it.

Also interested, and equally determined to put Lisbeth behind bars, is Swedish homeland security chief Gabriella Crane (Synnøve Macody Lund), and she’s not altogether pleased about Needham’s presence on her country’s soil, either. But the most dangerous threat comes from a mysterious woman who everyone thought committed suicide years ago, a shadowy blonde dressed in red who controls a lethal band of assassins known as the Spiders. She is Camilla Salander (Sylvia Hoeks), Lisbeth’s estranged sister, and Camilla’s personal

vendetta is to see her sibling fall from the public’s good graces and watch as all she holds near and dear is destroyed.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web is the fourth book involving Stieg Larsson’s iconic characters Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist and the first written by someone else after his death in 2004, in this case author David Lagercrantz. Instead of continuing on with the other two entries in Larsson’s original Millennium trilogy (The Girl Who Played with Fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest) after the moderate success of David Fincher’s 2011 adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, producers decided to go with this lesser known title in order to continue the franchise. They also chose to sub Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez in for Fincher and hired Foy and Gudnason to replace Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig in the roles they played in that 2011 film.

All of that should be fine. Alvarez is a risk-taking young director who brings energy and enthusiasm to his projects that at times can feel dangerous and uncomfortably unhinged, allowing for a dynamic spontaneity to occur that’s captivating. Foy is one of the most gifted actors working today, her work in television’s “The Crown” and in this past year’s double-whammy of Unsane and First Man speaking for itself, so her taking over the role from Oscar-nominee Mara isn’t the step down some might have initially assumed it was going to be. As for Gudnason, I can’t say I’m that familiar with his work. Still, he was excellent as Björn Borg in Borg vs McEnroe, and as good as Craig was in Fincher’s film, having a Swedish actor in this role for some reason just feels right.

And yet, while Foy is superb, putting a new spin on Salander that makes the character her own outside of Mara’s or Noomi Rapace’s (star of the original Swedish trilogy based on Larsson’s books) takes, the movie itself is a substandard thriller that rarely goes anywhere worth talking about.

Working from a script he co-wrote with Jay Basu (Monsters: Dark Continent) and Steven Knight (Locke, Dirty Pretty Things), Alvarez’s movie is shockingly boring. Even though it presents a handful of intriguing new characters including Vicky Krieps as a potential love interest for Lisbeth, Stanfield’s covert operative Needham, Lund’s slippery bureaucrat Crane and, obviously, Hoeks’ wraithlike angel of death Camilla Salander, the story fails to do practically anything of interest with the lot of them. Even Blomkvist is wasted here, the journalist more of a bystander observing the action hoping not to get killed instead of a key piece of this thriller’s ignition system helping drive it to conclusion. It’s a waste talent, and I had a devilish time maintaining interest for most of the film’s 117-minute running time.

It’s kind of odd, really. Take away the technology and erase the high-powered weaponry Needham is particularly skilled at utilizing and what I found myself left with was a substandard, ploddingly plotted retrograde spy thriller that felt more like a 1988 made-for-TV adaptation of a Robert Ludlum novel than it did anything else. The fascinating character nuances that made all three of Larsson’s best-sellers so incredible has been perplexingly stripped away, which is inexcusable considering this story revolves around two polar opposite sisters who were both victims of their father’s monstrous appetites and took wildly divergent paths in order to make new lives for themselves.

But none of that resonates or matters, and as hard as both Foy and Hoeks try to give their scenes together a semblance of emotional heft or meaning, everything falls weirdly flat, building to a maudlin conclusion that had me rolling my eyes in frustration.

Alvarez is too good a director for things to be a total loss. He stages two noteworthy sequences. The first is a chase where Lisbeth is drugged, framed for murder and left to be discovered by the police only for her to creatively find a way out of her predica-

ment utilizing the dead person’s medicine cabinet, a stolen police car and a cell phone to turn the tables on her assailants. The other is an ingenious escape from an airport holding facility, the resourceful hacker throwing things into total comical disarray as she helps someone she hopes to convince to assist her in regaining possession of Firefall from being deported by Crane. Both of these sequences are masterfully staged with Alvarez in complete control, each climaxing with a bit of subversive virtuosity I thoroughly enjoyed.

But it isn’t enough. While I appreciate that Alvarez and company didn’t waste a lot of time recapping what has happened to Lisbeth in the past, there is still such a lack of character development that connecting emotionally to what is happening is close to impossible. This is particularly true as it pertains to Blomkvist. There’s really no reason for him to be a part of any of this mystery other than he was a key cog in Larsson’s original trilogy and I guess all involved felt he needed to be part of this as well. Having never read Lagercrantz’s book I can only imagine he had more to do there than he inexplicably does here. But even if that were so this is one whodunit where the journalist’s investigative skills aren’t relevant or useful other than they’re really good at putting him in harm’s way, thus making Blomkvist excess baggage the film maybe could have done without.

I think Lisbeth Salander is a fascinating character. Even with Larsson’s death, I’m all for bringing more of her stories to the screen. But as good as Foy is in the role, if they end up being as flat and as undercooked as The Girl in the Spider’s Web I’m going to reassess that opinion sooner rather than later. While not so much a bad movie as it is an instantly forgettable one, new adventures featuring the girl with the dragon tattoo are supposedly still forthcoming. Here’s hoping they’re a heck of a lot more interesting than this one is.
