by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer WATER BY THE SPOONFUL THEATRE22 (AT WEST OF LENIN) Through November 14 From the moment Water by the Spoonful begins, you are plunged into a turbulent story of deep family ties and resentments, and the challenges of lives lived in poverty and struggle. Who needs time for exposi-

tion? Let’s get this show on the road! The play, a 2012 Pulitzer Prize winner by Quiera Alegria Hudes, is one of the best scripts to hit our region’s stages in quite a while! Directed by Julie Beckman, the tight seven-member cast has great support from a deceptively simple set by Montana Tippett, sound designer Kyle Thompson and lighting designer Tristan Roberson. IF/THEN PARAMOUNT THEATRE November 3-8 LaChanze is the true definition of the phoenix. The characters she’s played on Broadway have overcome tragic circumstances to find their way to a higher place. Whether she is playing a poor peasant girl (Once on this Island), a run away slave (Dessa Rose), or an abused woman (The Color Purple), she has shown courage and found her way to her feet. In her own life, as a 9/11-widow she has come full circle, and

several years later sang at the dedication of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. After a triumphant run on Broadway, LaChanze recreates her role as Kate in the musical If/Then as it starts its national tour. The Seattle Gay News got to chat with this extremely talented lady. I would also say Lola Falana. When I was a see lachanze page 7

needed to enjoy such a wish. Seattle’s own Teatro ZinZanni creates the perfect escape with the right amount of circus thrown in for good measure. The latest incarnation is called Hollywood Nights, and it’s definitely a fun-filled evening. The show’s storyline is simple and incidental; it’s a vehicle to weave together the magical acts of the night. A famous movie director (Cecil B. DeGrille) makes dinner see teatro page 8

by Jessica Price SGN A&E Writer FLORENCE + THE MACHINE KEY ARENA October 28 Seeing Florence + the Machine and Madonna play arenas within ten days of each other (at Key Arena and Moda Center, re-

spectively) connected previously unseen parallels in my mind. Generating both intimacy and real excitement in an arena takes a unique blend of showmanship and charisma. The two women couldn’t be more different – and there’s a gap of 27 years between them – but despite wildly different approaches, both women possess the sheer star power to hold an entire arena rapt with see florence page 4
