“She Wants It: Desire, Power, and Toppling the Patriarchy” “Transparent” creator Jill Soloway with Hannah Gadsby and special guests brought feminism to Town Hall Seattle

by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer Part-book reading, part feminist revival party, “Transparent” creator Jill Soloway was in Seattle this past Tuesday, October 23 at Temple De Hirsch Sinai. The event was co-presented by Town Hall Seattle and Three Dollar Bill Cinema and lasted about 90 minutes.

Soloway wasn’t alone. She was joined by her rumored girlfriend, award-winning Australian comedian, Hannah Gadsby, as well as award-winning author Morgan Parker and Portland-native writer, Nicole J. Georges.

It wouldn’t be a feminist rally, without music, and that was furnished by Soloway’s comedian/musician sister, Faith, on keyboard. Together they explored Soloway’s evolution from straight, married mother of two to identifying as queer and nonbinary. They offered unbridled insight and a rare front seat to the inner workings of the #MeToo movement and its impact. Soloway, Gadsby, and Parker called us together to ruminate on an entire generation’s thoughtful and revolutionary ideas about gender, inclusion, desire, and consent.

First Literary Landmark in state of Washington honors Richard Hugo

United for Libraries, in partnership with the Washington Center for the Book, has designated the first official Literary Landmark in the state of Washington to honor poet Richard Hugo (1923-1982). The Literary Landmark plaque has been installed outside the front doors of the new Hugo House, a writing center for emerging and established writers, at 1634 Eleventh Avenue on Seattle’s Capitol Hill.

Marcellus Turner, chief librarian at The Seattle Public Library, and Cindy Aden, director of the Washington State Library, unveiled the Literary Landmark on September 17, 2018.

“Hugo House has been at the center of the writing community in Seattle for decades and plays a pivotal role in our literary heritage,” said Turner. “It is fitting that we honor the profound richness of Richard Hugo’s work and the vibrant writing center named for him with this Literary Landmark.”

The Washington Center for the Book is a partnership of The Seattle Public Library and Washington State Library. Coordinators Nono Burling and Linda Johns researched authors who have contributed to the literary landscape of the state and selected Hugo as the first to be honored. They worked with Hugo House staff and friends of the poet for the official plaque, which reads:

POET RICHARD HUGO Raised in Seattle’s White Center by severe, taciturn grandparents, Richard Hugo (1923-1982) overcame his impoverished childhood to become a nationally beloved poet and teacher. Writing about overlooked people and places, he believed that “humanity will always survive civilization.” Hugo House, founded in 1996 as a

Muhammad Ali started life as Cassius Clay – Get to know him at SCT!

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer AND IN THIS CORNER: CASSIUS CLAY SEATTLE CHILDREN’S THEATRE Through November 25 “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” That quote might immediately bring Muhammad Ali to mind. He was known for pithy poetic sayings and poetry and rhyming were signatures of his career. But before he was Muhammad Ali, he was Cassius Clay, a young boxer who trained hard and went to the Olympics, winning a gold medal in boxing.

Cassius Clay’s early days and the tumult of the Civil Rights era are the focus of a new play at Seattle Children’s Theatre, And in This Corner: Cassius Clay, by Idris Goodwin. Directed by newly-minted University of Washington MFA Malika Oyetimein, a robust cast beats out a rhythmic telling of his life from age 11 to his Olympic victory and the challenges along his way.

It’s 1953 and Cassius is 11 and is thirsty.

He wants to go into a diner to get a glass of water and his mother tells him he can’t.

It’s a “whites only” establishment. This is an introduction to young people in Seattle about what the overt, standard racism of the South was like not so many years ago. For many years it was accepted and lived with as “just the way things are” until the swell

of young people protesting brought forth the necessary changes to society.

The play is not all that sophisticated in its written form. It focuses more on the feeling and the rhythm, adding rhythmic elements to the production that cause a more visceral reaction. It should be easy for children as young as 5 and 6 to understand, though “why” there were whites only establishments is not easy to understand today. That might be a big conversation on the way home.

The highlights of Clay’s early life are displayed and Andre G. Brown, as Clay, often speaks to the audience in rhyme.

Playwright Goodwin, asked about what he found as the genesis of Clay/Ali’s penchant for rhyming, said that he really couldn’t

identify when it started or why, but he felt that any play about Ali had to include poetry or it would be garbage.

As is usual for a Seattle Children’s Theatre cast, the cast is terrific and adroitly manages changes into multiple characters.

The versatile set by Shawn Ketchum Johnson has various hooks and arm joints above the stage that can pull out boxing equipment and push it back as needed. Various signs announce the Whites Only Establishment and other quick ways of identifying places and information.

Brown is a well-rounded, appealing Clay with a pugnacious but also charming manner. He’s helped out by an adorable turn by Chip Sherman as his little brother

Rudy, a role that is funny and helps set the tone for Clay’s protective nature. Brace Evans and Bria Samone Henderson play Clay’s father and mother.

Lamar Legend takes on the role of Clay’s best friend Eddie. Eddie is not exactly historical, but is an amalgamation of the friends around Clay, and helps show those who taught Clay why he should take on the burden of protesting against black exploitation and diminution.

An important scene toward the end is when Clay comes back from the Olympics and the mayor of his hometown, Louisville, Kentucky, says his gold medal is the “key to the town.” With that “key,” Clay attempts to get served at a Whites Only establishment and is rejected. He is so disappointed that he tells stories later that he chucked the medal into the river.

This is a moving and accessible production that the whole family can enjoy. At roughly 75 minutes, it can entertain most children without strain. And while you might think that Seattle Children’s Theatre is only for kids, productions like these prove that even finicky adults can enjoy great theater.

MOR launches 20th Anniversary Season Varied program features landmarks from its two decades of musical witness Since its founding in 1998, Music of Remembrance (MOR) has remembered the Holocaust through music, bringing over 200 works to Benaroya Hall and other stages. In addition to rescuing many historic works from undeserved obscurity, it has commissioned over 30 new works that remember the Holocaust and honor those who stood up in the face of injustice and persecution. MOR celebrates this legacy with a 20th Birthday Gala Concert on Sunday, November 4 at 4pm at the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall (3rd Ave & Union St).

The anniversary concert includes highlights from MOR’s varied repertoire of Holocaust-era music, and unforgettable moments from some of the most impactful new works that MOR has brought into the world: Tom Cipullo’s award-winning chamber opera After Life, imagining a confrontation between the ghosts of Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso; Jake Heggie’s haunting opera Out of Darkness, exploring the meaning and emotional costs of survival; Lori Laitman’s oratorio Vedem, inspired by a true story of teenage concentration camp prisoners who dared to create a clandestine journal under their captors’ noses; Paul Schoenfield’s searing Camp Songs with its bitterly ironic mockery of conditions in Sachsenhausen. GREGORY AWARDS continued from cover

of local theatre practitioners, and to raise the visibility of the theatre in our region.

The Gregory Awards are the only peer-judged theatre awards in the Seattle area, and are now recognized as the most significant theatre awards in the northwestern United States, akin to the Ovation Awards in Los Angeles and the Jeff Awards in Chicago.

The Gregory Awards began with a single category, the Gregory A. Falls Sustained Achievement Award, in 1998.

Since then, it has grown to encompass 18 categories, incorporating musical theatre categories, new work, technical awards, and the Melissa Hines Backstage Award to honor volunteers, board members, and administrators.

The show started with host and Broadway star, Don Daryl Rivera (Aladdin) performing the opening number, “You will be found” from the Tony Award winning, Dear Evan Hanson with a Special Awards Youth Choir backing him up. Throughout the night, we were treated with special 10th Anniversary greetings from Broadways stars from the Lion King, Aladdin, Once Upon This Island as well as Seattle’s own, Jerick Hoffer (aka Jinkx Monsoon), Gilbert Gottfried and more.

Dietz is a two-time winner of the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays Award for Fiction and Still Life with Iris, as well as a two-time finalist for the Steinberg New Play Award for Last of the Boys and Becky’s New Car. He received the PEN USA West Award in Drama for Lonely Planet. Other widely produced plays include Yankee Tavern, Jackie & Me, Shooting Star, Inventing Van Gogh, God’s Country, Private Eyes and The Nina Variations. Dietz teaches parttime for the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Texas at Austin (recently stepping away from his full-time faculty position) and is a Dramatists Guild “Traveling Master,” offering playwriting workshops and master classes around the country. Andre Jackson. Lonely Planet runs October 24 - November 18. Having premiered at ACT Theatre in 1993, Lonely Planet went on to be produced numerous times across the country, including three Off-Broadway engagements.

An intimate portrait of two friends at the height of the AIDS epidemic, Lonely Planet is set in a small map shop on the oldest street in an American city. Growing increasingly fearful of the outside world, Jody, the shop owner, retreats inside his store and refuses to leave. Jody’s quiet denial is in sharp contrast to his fantastical and extroverted friend Carl, who repeatedly urges Jody to leave the store. Through Carl’s surreal extravagance, the friends are forced to confront their lives and a vanishing community and come to terms with their place in a changing world.

“Lonely Planet was born in Seattle and written in Seattle, and dedicated to two of Seattle’s finest actors [Laurence Ballard and Michael Winters],” states writer and director Steven Dietz. “I am honored to have seen the play have a rich life these past 25 years – both nationally and internationally – but I’m even more delighted to have the chance to bring it back home to Seattle.

My great thanks to AJ Epstein and West of Lenin for making this happen.”

After several years of discussion about ways to honor and celebrate the play’s 25th anniversary, Dietz and Epstein, proprietor of West of Lenin, decided on this intimate production. Michael Winters returns as Jody, the role he originated when Lonely Planet premiered. Also returning are lighting designer Rick Paulsen and co-costume designer Connie Rinchiuso, who both worked on the original Seattle production.

Impeccably acted Prince unhappily uneven

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE HAPPY PRINCE Now playing On his deathbed in Paris, Oscar Wilde (Rupert Everett) looks back on the various bits and pieces of his life. His release from prison has not resulted in the resurrection of his once great career. It has not brought him peace. Instead, it has only hastened his bankruptcy and fueled his oftentimes unbearable depression. As the days meld one into the other and each night seems to linger on longer than the one before, Wilde wonders if his former fame was nothing more than an illusion, and if those who once professed to love him only did so out of callous self-interest.

An obvious labor of love for director/ writer/star Everett, The Happy Prince is as well-intentioned and as sumptuously mounted a historical drama as anything I’ve seen this year. Featuring a stellar supporting cast, which includes the likes of Colin Firth, Emily Watson, Colin Morgan, Tom Wilkinson and Edwin Thomas, sporting exquisite production design courtesy of Brian Morris (Wimbledon) and a suitably mournful score from Oscar-winner Gabriel Yared (The English Patient), there’s plenty about this production to get excited about.

Throw in a performance from Everett that’s as lived-in and emotionally complex as any the acclaimed actor has ever given (who is no stranger to Wilde what with his roles in An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest for film and David Hare’s The Judas Kiss on the stage), and there’s plenty here to get excited about.

Even with that being the case, I cannot say I was quite able to embrace The Happy Prince as fully and as contentedly as I wanted to. Everett’s movie has trouble maintaining dramatic momentum. There’s

For whatever reason, I kept feeling like the film was insistent on keeping me at arm’s length, and as such these latter days of Wilde’s life never captured my emotions in the ways I’m certain they were intended to. As deeply passionate as Everett’s performance is, as tearfully austere as the final moments of this story prove to be, I still came away more impressed with the work

involved in making this motion picture a reality than I was with the actual overall finished product.

Not to say I feel Everett’s directorial debut isn’t worthy of a look. There are some superior moments here, not the least of which are any of the scenes between he and frequent collaborator Firth (who’s admittedly a little too old to be playing friend Reggie Turner; but thankfully he’s so much fun to watch I can’t say the historical inaccuracy of his portrayal bothered me all

that much). There is a convivial joy to their dual performances that’s transfixing, and no matter how dark or tragically depressive the material became there’s something about the sight of these two great actors working together in such relaxed tandem that’s frequently glorious. I was also taken with Morgan as Wilde’s lover Lord Alfred Bosie Douglas, the flippant pansexual tempestuousness of his performance tossing wild jolts of unhinged chaos into a movie that could honestly have used more of it.

Then there is Everett. While the prosthetic makeup he ends up having to wear isn’t the best I’ve ever seen, none of that diminishes the actor’s showstopping turn as Wilde. Everett always appears to be in control, continually has a handle on who the character is and what is going on with him at whatever point in time the story happens to be focusing on at any given second. There is a melancholic sensuality to his portrait of the sickly playwright and author I found fascinating, the actor’s passionate commitment to living every moment of the story as if it were happening right as the viewer is watching it borderline magnificent.

All of which makes me feel a little frustrated that I didn’t enjoy the movie itself more than I ultimately did. I kept feeling like all of the insights Everett was building towards were much too obvious, and I never had the sensation that he was digging for any deeper truths that might lead me to a new understanding of Wilde that I had never contemplated before watching his film. While it looks stunning, and while many of the performances are outstanding, The Happy Prince never engaged all of my emotions, all of which sadly makes it a Wilde biopic where the wit upstages the heart and the clever isn’t nearly shrewd enough to conceal its more noticeable shortcomings.

(2000). He even voiced the character of Prince Charming in the Shrek movies. But the most interesting thing on Everett’s resume is not a movie role, rather for what he did in 1989, which was unprecedented back then, let alone today; he was the first major actor to come out of the closet and not hide the fact that he was gay.

“If you had to do it all over again,” I asked Everett, while we were sitting talking about his latest effort, The Happy Prince, a movie based on the later years of Oscar Wilde’s life, a film which he wrote, directed and stars in, “would you have come out of the closet when you did?”

“Yes, because I loved going to clubs and discos and stuff like that,” said Everett. “And there was never that question for me to lead that kind of closeted gay life that might be quite fun, you know, where you’re just in your own space, and you order in, or whatever it is,” he added, breaking out into a mischievous laugh. “I loved the whole gay culture. So, for me, to even consider anything other than being out wasn’t an option. And, also, if you’re going to lie about yourself, it’s a tough thing. It’s a negation of yourself.”

“Why the fascination with Oscar Wilde, and when did it start?”

“My fascination with Oscar Wilde began when I was six years old and my mother read me The Happy Prince at night in bed. I remember it very well. I was enraptured by the story and inconsolable at the end. Coming from a military family with a distinctly pre-Freudian world view – it was probably the first time I heard about Love and Suffering and that there was a terrible price to be paid for it. The Happy Prince was a turning point.

“In 1975, I moved to London. It is difficult to imagine now but it had only been legal to be gay for seven years and the police – making the most of the ambiguity in the 1967 law – continued to raid and arrest people for homosexual acts in public and so there was a palpable feeling that we were stepping in Oscar’s freshly trodden footprints on those unlucky occasions when we were herded into paddy wagons and taken down to the police station for the night.”

Everett adds, “Later I became an actor and performed in The Picture of Dorian Gray. It was a great success. When an actor discovers a writer who really works for him – that he can perform well and make his own – it is the beginning of a treasured relationship. Something between me and the text sparked. A few years later I performed The Importance of Being Earnest (in French) at the Theatre National de Chaillot in Paris and then made two films from Wilde plays – An Ideal Husband and The Importance

of Being Earnest. At around this point my career dried up – literally evaporated overnight and I began to write. I decided to create a role for myself. If no one else would employ me I would employ myself. Oscar Wilde seemed to be the ideal character. Not the Wilde of folklore, the iconic family man, the life and soul of the café royal but a different Wilde, the fallen star, the last great vagabond of the nineteenth century – punished and crushed by society, yet somehow surviving. I would write the Passion of Wilde!

After I had been turned down by almost every director of note I decided to make the film myself. If I had been in possession of a crystal ball I would not have embarked on such a journey. It took ten years to get to preproduction.”

“What society did to Oscar Wilde was this: They put him in prison and then they imprisoned him in liberty and it happened just for the fact of being a homosexual man.

So, for me, as a homosexual man, this is the important part of the story.”

Based on all of that, I asked Everett why he immersed himself so fully in the world of Oscar Wilde, putting on the three hats, director, writer and actor.

“I didn’t think of immersing myself fully in the beginning, because I never wanted to be the director. I had written a couple of books (about Oscar Wilde) in 2000 and 2005 and I really wanted to write a script in which I could act and maybe resuscitate my career to a certain extent. So, Oscar Wilde seemed to be the perfect character in that he’s a great inspiration to me, the patron saint figure in a way. After sending the screenplay to a number of directors, and seeing them all pass on the project, I realized if a screenplay is not directed it is nothing. You can’t publish it in a magazine.

It’s nothing. And I thought, I’m going to do it myself. And that’s what happened.”

The version of Oscar Wilde’s life that Everett tells is both depressing and sad, as it focuses on the final years of his life, where he is recently released from jail, after having been sent there for engaging in homosexual acts, which was illegal in England until 1967. Much of the film features Wilde on his deathbed, recalling the horrible atrocities that befell him.

“I focused on the latter part of Wilde’s life partly because the other three films about him focus on the successful part of his life, and I think that is a little bit of an easy get out for people to just look at the good part. What society did to him was this. They put him in prison and then they imprisoned him in liberty and it happened just for the fact of being a homosexual man.

So, for me, as a homosexual man, this is the important part of the story. It’s like the Pas-

sion of Oscar Wilde, like Christians have The Passion of Christ. And seeing Wilde go from one stage to another is a great inspiration. And I think he was also amazing in his exile, because he was the last great vagabond of the nineteenth century. He was never a victim.”

“Now that you have made your directorial debut, having done so with reservations, would you want to direct another film,” I gently inquired.

“I would,” he said. “It’s kind of like childbirth when you’re directing a movie.

You think when you’re in labor, ‘oh, god, I’m never doing this again.’ But as soon as the baby is out of the bag, you think, I can’t remember all that pain. I’m now bristling with new ideas.”

One piece of trivia: Everett turned down the role of Cecil in the 1986 smash Merchant/ Ivory classic adaptation of E.M. Forster’s A Room With A View. “Any regrets on that,” I asked him. “At the time, I had made a couple of period pieces, Another Country and Dance With A Stranger. I didn’t want to be typecast for the rest of my life. So, I turned down the film. I loved the Merchant/Ivory team.

But turning down that role that Daniel DayLewis ended up with ruined my chances forever working with them again. I burned that bridge, if you will. However, for Daniel DayLewis, it was a career making performances, because the same year he had done My Beautiful Laundrette and his roles in those two films couldn’t have been more different. He turned into a star overnight. The same would not have happened to me.”

At fifty-nine years of age Everett, this past summer, moved back in with his mother in England to help take care of her. The question “What is that like?” had to be asked.

Breaking out into a chuckle, he said, “That is like going back in the closet. It’s going OK. It’s having its own birthing process. You go immediately back to the relationship you had when you were fourteen and my mum doesn’t realize that I’m fifty-nine and she kind of orders me around. I have to close windows, open bottles, and do everything and that is quite difficult. But it’s nice.”

Next up for Everett, the TV miniseries remake of the 1986 Sean Connery movie The Name of the Rose.

Melodramatic misfire Don’t Go lives up to its title

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer DON’T GO Now playing American author Ben Slater (Stephen Dorff) teaches English literature at an exclusive prep school in Ireland while his wife Hazel (Melissa George) restores their picturesque seaside home back to its original glory. It’s been over six months since the death of their only daughter Molly (Grace Farrell), and understandably neither of them are dealing with the lingering after effects of this tragedy particularly well. Ben is plagued by a series of strange dreams of he and his family spending a day at the beach building a sand castle before a coming storm wrecks things, the well-known, if oddly spelled, idiom, “seas the day,” popping up everywhere he looks as well.

As much as the pair tries to get on with their everyday lives, this strange dream keeps haunting the author, making him question everything he thought he knew about rational reality. With each passing day, Ben begins to suspect there’s some sort of secret here that will allow him to change the past, to right the wrongs and the mistakes he’s made and ensure Molly survives.

While Hazel urges him to get psychological help, and while the community’s religious elder, Father John (Simon Delaney), does his best to talk some common sense into his friend, the author remains undaunted in his quest. He will figure out the secret behind this dream no matter what the cost.

Don’t Go is a strange mind trip of a psychological thriller, director David Gleeson and co-writer Ronan Blaney conjuring up a decent premise that had me initially questioning what was going on. The mystery at the heart of Ben’s strange dreams is based in real emotional hardship, and I liked the way the filmmakers threw me immediately into the center of his mental maelstrom right from the opening scene. But the story isn’t nearly as well fleshed out or as intelligent as those early moments got me to think it was going to be. Worse, there is a patriarchal, borderline misogynist bent to the film’s narrative destination that I found off-putting, and as relaxed and as naturalistic as the performances from Dorff and George might be this is an egregious misstep I simply could not get beyond.

I really was intrigued by the scenario that Gleeson and Blaney had come up with.

The way in which Ben starts to analyze his dream, how he begins to dissect it in order to study its most intimate bits and pieces, all of that is moderately fascinating. But the “seas the day” thing grows increasingly silly, the solution to this particular riddle bordering on being just plain dumb.

Additionally, for all his supposed good intentions Ben is something of a consistent sleaze and Dorff has the hardest time trying to imbue him with anything approaching a semblance of selfless humanity. It’s like the character is just play acting at having a grieving soul, the author, husband and father seemingly more concerned with concealing unwholesome secrets from his wife than he appears to be willing to be honest with her about any of the events that led up to their daughter’s untimely death.

That’s where my main problems here lie. Ben is never honest, at least not with those by all accounts he should be honest with if his cockamamie plan to bend time and save his daughter is going to be met with anything close to lasting success. The

movie is brazen in showing his mistakes, especially where they concern longtime friend, Serena (Aoibhinn McGinnity), but that’s really all Gleeson and Blaney seem interested in doing. There is no attempt at catharsis. No attempt at understanding. No attempt to come clean with any of the people who need to know what really happened the night Molly met with her accident. All of that simply does not exist.

Dorff tries. He truly does. While I can’t say I’ve ever been the actor’s biggest fan he certainly isn’t just strutting around preening just for the sake of doing so. His few scenes with Farrell exude fatherly tenderness, while many of his moments with George, who is fully committed to delivering a complex and as emotionally resolute performance even if the script does her character no actual favors, have an understated naturalism that’s really rather nice. It’s obvious Dorff is going above and beyond in order to make Ben hopefully more than what he appears to be, and there is something to be said about just how fully

the actor submerges himself into the material in hopes his efforts will resonate with the audience.

But none of it ended up mattering to me.

Ben’s ultimate act might have the appearance of selflessness but that doesn’t mean any of what he does is actually born from the truth or rooted in honest to goodness human understanding. If anything, what he does is arguably the most selfish thing possible, all of which makes whether or not his theories in regards to his dream being the key to bend back time and change his daughter’s fate prove to be true are not as important a discovery as they by all accounts should undeniably be. For all its creative resourcefulness and artistic aspirations, Don’t Go just made me angry, and as I can’t go back into the past to erase this effort from my memory all I can do at this point is just warn everyone reading this not to repeat any of my mistakes.

The Seattle Public Library, in partnership with SIFF and the Apex Foundation, are pleased to present a screening of the acclaimed Mr. Rogers documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor from 6:30pm to 8:45pm Monday, Nov. 5 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636. Stay after the film for a Q&A with Nicholas Ma, the film’s producer.

Library programs are free and open to the public. Registration is not required.

Parking is available in the Central Library garage for $7 after 5 pm.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor, directed

by Academy Award winner Morgan Neville, presents the heartwarming life of Fred Rogers, whose cherished PBS series used cardigans, puppets and the Neighborhood of Make-Believe to imaginatively and compassionately inspire children, while not shying away from complicated issues.

Ma is a writer, director, producer and consultant based in New York City. He is currently working on a documentary series on diplomacy. Previously, he worked for then-Senator John Kerry, overseeing his global economic portfolio on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The Library brings people, information and ideas together to enrich lives and build community. We support universal access to information and ideas, and form strong partnerships with community organizations like SIFF and the Apex Foundation to offer performance art and films that are accessible to all.
