Young the Giant’s Sameer Gadhia discusses the presidential election, North Carolina and Halloween

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer YOUNG THE GIANT THE SHOWBOX SODO October 28 In six short years since the release of their self-titled debut, Young the Giant has emerged as a must-hear alternative rock band. Besides putting out a string of good hits, including “My Body,” “Cough Syrup” and “Apartment,” the SoCal-based group has also found success as a live act, performing to massive crowds at some of

different set every night. It’s interesting to see, in retrospective, how the songs throughout the three albums are conversations with one another. You can trace the genesis of an idea and see it evolve album to album. I think our fans get that. One night in DC we played the new album in its entirety with the exact track listing. People have really been resonating with it; eager to continue that conversation.

Rodriguez: As 2016 winds down, do you have any favorite albums or songs from this year?

Gadhia: I’ve really been digging that Solange album. There’s also an Australian artist

Meaning, a concert can be a conversation, to illuminate other ideas and beliefs. If we go, it will be to raise awareness on the issue.

Rodriguez: Do you have any plans for Halloween? Will you put on a costume?

Gadhia: We’re playing two shows with Gwen Stefani to close out our hometown amphitheater in Orange County, Verizon Wireless. Last year, we had a costumemaking contest for our fans. We have a few ideas this year, but we are still concocting.

the most respected summer festivals, from South by Southwest to Sasquatch to Lollapalooza. Additionally, Young the Giant’s music has been featured on a number of TV shows, most noticeably on “Glee,” and on “American Idol,” “The Beast” and MTV’s “The Real World: Brooklyn.” The fivepiece unit – Sameer Gadhia, Jacob Tilley, Eric Cannata, Payam Doostzadeh, Francois Comtois – released its third studio album two months ago, titled Home of the Strange.

Via email, I caught up with lead singer Gadhia before the band headed back out on tour, which includes a Seattle date at The Showbox SoDo on October 28. For tickets, go to aeglive.com.

Here’s what Sameer Gadhia shared with me inside The Music Lounge.

Albert Rodriguez: What comes to mind when you hear the word “Seattle”?

Sameer Gadhia: Seattle was the jumping-off point in our careers. KNDD was one of the first stations to heavily spin the first album, and I remember it being one of the first cities where we realized we had an audience that was listening to what we had to say.

Rodriguez: How many songs from the new album is the band playing on this tour?

Gadhia: We’re playing all of them.

I just got hip to. His name is D.D. Dumbo. His new album is a great dose of crazy.

Rodriguez: Any predictions on the upcoming election?

Gadhia: Oh god. I think people know where we stand. This album is about being sons of immigrants; about the journey our parents made, battling xenophobia and their own fears, to make a life here; to find a place to belong. I want to believe in America. If Trump wins I’ll have to do a lot of reassessing.

Rodriguez: A lot of people first heard about Young the Giant when your song was covered on “Glee.” What was your reaction to hearing it performed on the show?

Gadhia: Well, we had heard beforehand that “Glee” had requested “Cough Syrup.”

Honestly, at first, we were on the fence.

2010 was just the beginning of the tolerable sync world, and we wanted to make sure the song wasn’t hijacked for a different intent. But when the team came to us with the pitch and the idea, the concept of antibullying, we were 100% behind it. They did justice to the song.

Rodriguez: Several artists have canceled performances in North Carolina due to the state’s controversial bathroom law.

Has your band discussed this, or do you have a personal opinion on it?

Gadhia: We haven’t played North Carolina since the ruling. At the end of the day, a

seriously. This time, we rehearsed for two weeks in Nashville. We always want our live show to improve. We rehearse for as long as it takes.

Rodriguez: Who’s the best-dressed member of the band?

Gadhia: I’d say Eric [Cannata].

Rodriguez: Are all the band members involved in the songwriting process?

And how long does it take to write a song, on average?

Gadhia: Yes, we write most things together, and the process gets a bit more complicated to explain after every album. We switch roles, use limitations as our guide, go on retreats, etc. Everything for the music. The shortest songs take 10 minutes.

We’ve spent months on one song before as well. Literally fifty versions. Usually, the shorter the better.

Rodriguez: What city, country, or festival have you never performed at that’s at the top of your bucket list?

Gadhia: We still haven’t performed in Japan. Every time we get an offer, it clashes with our schedule. We need to make that happen.

Rodriguez: What is the most consumed item, food or beverage, on the tour bus?

Gadhia: Bulleit Bourbon.

Pearl Jam one step away from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Now, we await the votes to be counted before assuring Pearl Jam a well-deserved induction into music’s most elite club, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Seattle band became eligible for this year’s round of nominees, announced on October 18, after its debut recording Ten reached the 25-year mark since its release. An estimated 500 voters from around the world, comprised of academics, journalists, producers and others within the music industry, will now select this year’s inductees with an announcement of the chosen artists scheduled for the coming weeks and the induction ceremony set for April. If Pearl Jam is voted in, and they are heavily favored to do so, they would become the fourth Seattle act to earn Hall of Fame honors, behind Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana and Heart. Also on the ballot this time are Joan Baez, Journey, Chaka Khan, Depeche Mode, Tupac Shakur, Chic, Kraftwerk, Yes, Janet Jackson, J. Geils Band and Bad Brains.

You can’t turn back time, but you can still see Cher in person. The Goddess of Pop has announced an exclusive residency at the Park Theater, located at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino, for 2017. “Classic Cher” is billed as a show featuring many of the Gay icon’s top hits and additionally will be staged at another Las Vegas property, the MGM National Harbor; both the Monte

Carlo and National Harbor are managed by the very LGBT-friendly MGM Resorts International. Cher dates are as follows: February 8, 10, 11, 14, 18, 19, 22, 24 and 25 at the Park Theater, and March 17, 19 and 20 at the National Harbor. For tickets, go to cher.com.

Headed back to Seattle by popular demand is Kenny G. The smooth jazz performer, originally from the Emerald City, will perform eight shows in four days at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley next spring, following a successful sold out run when he last performed here. Appearance dates at the

Jazz Alley are April 13 through 16 with tickets available now at jazzalley.com.

The lineup for Deck the Hall Ball 2016 has been announced and this is it: Empire of the Sun, The Head and the Heart, Jimmy Eat World, Phantogram, Glass Animals, Band of Horses, COIN and My Goodness. The annual holiday concert, hosted by local radio station 107.7FM (KNDD, The End), is happening December 6 at Key Arena. General admission passes, priced at $71, and reserved seats, ranging from $40 to $95, are on sale now at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at Ticketmaster.com, Key Arena box office, or charge by phone at 800-745-3000.

Finally, eight-time Tony Award-winning musical Once is being staged at Tacoma’s Pantages Theater on November 6, for a single performance at 3pm. This is a national Broadway touring production that tells the story of an Irish musician and Czech immigrant drawn together by their shared love of music. Once, adapted for the stage from the 2007 motion picture, features songs by the Academy Awardwinning duo Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, including “Falling Slowly.” Tickets are available at broadwaycenter.org.

Kanye West delivers an intriguing, elevating performance at Key Arena

the audience singing about a third of it, as well as West rapping a verse with no background music. There was no band or backup singers, it was just West laying down his lyrics over pre-recorded instrumentals and samples. The only big hit missing at Key Arena was “Gold Digger.”

The unpredictable, or in West’s case slightly predictable, happened. He went on a 5-minute rant just before doing a cover of Drake’s “Pop Style,” using expletives to slam Apple and Tidal for messing up the release of Watch the Throne, a collaborative project with Jay Z, and therefore preventing the release of a sequel. The mini meltdown was captured on video by many fans and posted on YouTube, which then led to major headlines on Thursday morning with everybody from TMZ to Billboard magazine

reporting on the outburst.

After performing “Power,” what looked to be a long illuminated runway, but instead was a lighted overhead ceiling for the floor area, was lit up for the remainder of the show. “Famous,” “All of the Lights,” “Good Life,” “Black Skinhead,” “Touch the Sky” and “Waves” were also included in the Seattle show, which coincidentally took place exactly three years after West launched “The Yeezus Tour” here, on October 19, 2013.

A highlight of the concert was near the end when West slipped between bright red laser beams, like strings of yarn, during the sizzling electro-led number “Fade” that sounded more like a club remix than the original track. He closed out with “Ultralight Beam,” as a giant beam of light positioned over the center of the floor shone down like a UFO. The platform was then lowered at one end of the arena, he hopped off and made his exit. Though the crowd wanted an encore, they didn’t get it.

The fan adoration was amazing to witness, especially the young men who knew all the lyrics to all the songs and who seemed to worship the man and his career, knowing his extensive catalog of work from early to recent, and who proudly changed into tour merchandise they’d just bought at the venue. In fact, I’ve never seen so many people buy tee-shirts, hoodies, jackets and baseball caps at a show before; some even purchased bags full of West gear for friends or for holiday gifts.

Sound-wise, the volume was too loud and created a muffled noise during several numbers. That said, the rest of the concert was fierce and while I could fault West for standing on a raised cut-out stage for 1.5 hours, I can’t see any other way of him performing in concert. It was symbolic, really; he is that elevated performer that towers above the rest.

“The Saint Pablo Tour” will continue through 2016 with a final date at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on New Year’s Eve.

KANYE WEST “THE SAINT PABLO TOUR” KEY ARENA October 19 You might think Kanye West is solely responsible for putting himself on a pedestal, but nope. That’s where his fans want him, that’s where they think he belongs.

They really do believe he is that rap mastermind, musical savior and innovative gamechanger that the industry, and he himself, have built him up to be.

It doesn’t matter whether you or I believe he’s a genius, or not, he thinks that he is and his fans think that, so it’s a done deal.

In concert, this understanding becomes vivid, such as it did Wednesday night when West followers crammed Key Arena to watch him perform for 90 minutes on an elevated platform that he rode throughout the venue like a magic carpet. Those on the floor literally looked up to him, as he zipped through a set list with about 30 songs, of which he played either snippets of the tracks, or the songs in their entirety.

Before hitting the stage at 9:30pm, the setting inside the arena was a bit spooky with fog machines filling the lower levels with smoke and cryptic, murmuring sounds playing overhead on the speakers. There was no supporting act, we all just waited for West to go on, and when that moment happened a tremendous roar erupted and people freaked out, and we gave him our full attention.

West opened the show with “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1” and “Pt. 2,” both from his newest album The Life of Pablo, standing on the platform that was raised about 10 to 12 feet from the floor, dressed in faded denims tucked into construction boots and an oversized hoodie shirt. At times, the platform would slant downwards,

like a ramp, giving West faithful on the floor a closer glimpse of him.

The general admission floor level was standing room only, a dream spot for fans who wanted to mosh, bounce up and down, dance, but mostly form mosh pits that began as little swirls and grew into larger circles, like an intensifying hurricane. With people looking up towards the square-shaped platform, which never really stayed in one place but moved around the arena briskly, the concert often resembled a boxing match.

On Wednesday evening’s set list were several of West’s biggest hits, including a riveting one verse-plus-chorus version of “Jesus Walks,” a shortened yet hyped rendition of “Stronger,” where he danced and skipped around the platform, and a solid performance of “Heartless” that saw

David Sedaris returning to Seattle in November

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer I have very fond memories of reading David Sedaris books in the late ’90s and early ’00s. I laughed loudly, and perhaps annoyingly, inside coffee shops, libraries, public buses and aboard trains traveling through Europe as my nose was deeply ensconced in the pages of Naked, Holidays on Ice and Me Talk Pretty One Day. Nothing could be funnier, I thought. Until I saw Sedaris in person, at the late Bailey-Coy Books on Capitol Hill, and that was an even more comical experience, as he wittily shared excerpts from his books and random stories from his childhood, not to mention kindly sticking around afterwards to sign autographs. I still have my signed copy of “Naked” on my bookshelf.

Sedaris will make his yearly pilgrimage to Seattle next month to once again share stories, read material from his books and introduce fans to unpublished works-in-progress. Whether the topic is politics, social culture, or simply comparing life between the US and his current home in England, where he lives with longtime partner Hugh Hamrick, you’re absolutely guaranteed to chuckle and giggle like a little kid during a David Sedaris appearance, where his satirical talent really seeps through. His most recent book is 2013’s Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls.

Confessions of a Size Queen

by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN A&E Writer I admit it; I’m a Size Queen and I make no apologies! I like the way the big ones feel in my mouth. The way my tongue has to move to accommodate each massive one; the way I have to over-compensate every time my throat stretches open, and the way my lips feel as they succumb to conforming to their immense sizes. I admit it; my knees go week for a man with a big vocabulary.

It was my grandfather that first introduced me to the powerful pleasures found in the semantics of etymology. Observing my younger self-creating makeshift tools to finish an assigned task, he commented with great pride. “You’re a resourceful little Pisher.” Seeing my confused look he offered a cocky expression and thrust his long arm out pointing the way. “Look it up!” came the command. I did as I was told feeling secret tingling for reasons I wasn’t yet able to comprehend. Despite having been ordered to do the very same thing countless of times in the past, it never had the same effect. For some reason this time, I felt salacious for reasons I naively wasn’t able to understand. Finding the definition encouraged these passionate sensations within me.

I made a powerful new discovery; the eroticism of words, and I knew my life would never be the same. The word Resourceful sent an electrical, erotic charge through me. Even though I was only barely starting puberty, I understood the licentious meaning to the pen being mightier than anyone’s sword, and a new fetish was born.

More than 30 years later I was having lunch with a good friend of mine. I often tease him about his verbal choices especially after his using “Boom Boom” as a sexual synonym. It was at that moment that I pointed out the obvious fact that he was the single parent of a pre-teen; they spoke within the same limited context. It was at lunch that I made an innuendo about the carnal comparisons between a “Shofar and a Shillelagh.” My family is Jewish, not Irish, but I knew the two words and assumed they were

common enough that most people would know them as well. So I was a little bewildered by the same baffled look from my friend, as I must have given my grandfather all those years ago.

My friend is a reasonably intelligent man. Even my ego won’t allow me to believe those words were that challenging to the average person. My immediate reaction was to justify: I chose a more literary path of reading, and became the author of the Agent Buck 98 series. My friend chose a different path to promenade down altogether; he became a single parent. While I was reading Capote with a book club – he was reading Dr. Seuss with a child. Being a single parent for the majority of the child’s life left him with little free time to read for enjoyment. A classic case of The Path One Didn’t Take – neither better nor worse. More like individually chosen pathways with severely different scenery. When I went to mock him once again, he made an interesting challenge: “I bet that out of ten people asked, no more than two of them knows what a shillelagh is.” I accepted the challenge by turning and asking the woman behind us. Coincidentally, she attended Notre Dame and knew the word’s definition. Score one for me.

I decided to be as fair as possible with my challenge. I’d ask people of different races, ages and genders found in a myriad of locations via running errands and going back to my office. A block away I stopped and politely asked a man if he knew what a “shillelagh” was. He did not. To his credit English was not his original language.

Guessing from the broken English spoken, he hadn’t gotten to the point of fully comprehending the language either. OK. Oneto-one. I politely interrupted what looked like a pair of thirty-somethings conversing, and neither of them knew the definition of shillelagh. Nor did the next young lady I asked. At four-to-one I was getting discouraged.

With renewed vigor I decided to walk past the Community College. Like Anne Frank, I continue to have faith in mankind,

but my mind often lends itself to a conniving way of thinking. Stacking a deck may be frowned upon, but winning feels the same. Karma does like to strike the arrogant. I was hit hard when I approached a handsome, late twenties/early thirties man coming out of the school. The young man thought for a moment and with a completely honest and eager expression answered, “A shillelagh, isn’t that a Hawaiian musical instrument?” What I find more disturbing is that before the survey was complete, I heard a similar answer two more times.

When the census was concluded, I was forced to concede my idealistic visions for humanity with a score of three-to-eleven.

It was a sad day for Literati everywhere.

Especially those that happen to be Irish.

Having shattered illusions I went back to my office and proposed the scenario on Facebook. Thankfully, I am connected to a lot of “author” friends, friends that appreciate the works of those authors, and (many – although not all) friends that like to create a sacred space and immerse themselves between the sheets with a good, written tome of escapism. There, through cyber communication (and bad spelling on my part) all of humanity was redeemed when out of the 32 responses posted, only 3 didn’t know what the word meant.

Just because you have the equipment doesn’t mean you have the skills to use it. I have read many authors that stuff their proverbial trousers with a large display of language. They present a big show of bravado with their size, whipping it out at completely inappropriate times, flaunting it about for every reader to see. It doesn’t make them better writers by any stretch of the imagination. I guess the old adage is true: it ain’t the size of the vocabulary; it is the usage in the sentence.

I have two novels (and ten short stories in various anthologies) already in print. My third novel will be published in December 2016. My work is not aimed at being Pulitzer nominated, and I try to write concisely without arrogance or pomposity in my choice of words. I find that if I try to write

too “flowery,” or use words above my station that my meaning gets lost and my work comes across as haughtier than intended. I try not to let my communication desires get bigger than what I know I can handle. Start slow, warm them up and then slowly slide in the big gun.

My fetish of being a Size Queen may not fall under the usual definition of the common vernacular. But then again, whether delusional or justified, I’ve always considered myself as not being a common man.

And a fetish in any case is strictly for the individual as opposed to trying to satisfy the masses. Marilyn Monroe said the brain was the biggest sex organ in the body. If it’s good enough for her, it’s good enough for me. I’ll say it with great pride. If you challenge my mind, my body falls willingly into place. If you’ve got a big vocabulary and know how to use it, well give it to me good and make Daddy’s eyes roll back.

Celebrating 41 Years!

continued from cover classic novel Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes. Revisiting the 5th Avenue stage for the first time in over 20 years, Man of La Mancha begat perhaps one of the world’s most optimistic anthems, “(To Dream) The Impossible Dream.”

The story tells of an elderly Spanish man who slips away into delirium. He comes to believe he is a Knight, despite none have been seen in hundreds of years, and on a mission to fight all the evils of the world. With his squire, Sancho, a man who has kept his wits but placates his master’s delusion, the men go off in search of adventures and to fight evil sorcerers, doersof-evil, and the giants that are disguised as harmless windmills. When they come to a small village, they meet a group of thugs (called the Muleteers) and a woman named Aldonza, a kitchen whore. Quixote proclaims her to be Dulcinea, the Sweetest of All Fair Maidens to the amusement and disgust of all around. Quixote’s biological niece gets involved, with her fiancé – a man of science, and together they drag her poor misguided Uncle back to reality leaving us all to ponder the concept that all those who wander may not be truly lost.

The Ensemble of this show is excellent.

The Muleteers all add subtle nuances to their supporting, background roles, but that in no way diminishes the importance they play. The cast does a great job with subtle inflections that help to make this show enjoyable. Nick DeSantis, playing the Padre, adds his voice, which is perfectly suited to the sweet, innocent song, “To Each His Dulcinea,” a song encouraging people to follow their dreams while still realizing that they are fantasy.

Nova Y Payton plays Aldonza, the kitchen scullion who gets caught up in Quixote’s delusions of grandeur. Despite a strong stage presence, her voice (and beauty) lends itself to a sweeter demeanor. There is no doubt that Aldonza is an alley cat not to be crossed, but Ms. Payton brings an innocence that softens the character’s edges.

of complex Wagnerian harmonies. The opera was extremely popular in the early 20th century but now is performed infrequently in the U.S. When I invited a friend to attend a performance with me and showed her a synopsis indicating that Hansel is played by a woman and the Witch is played by a man, she said, “This sounds totally gay! I can’t wait!” She’s right, and you shouldn’t wait, either.

The Seattle Opera production, directed

by James Bonas and Christian Räth, originated at the 2008 Glyndebourne Festival in England under the direction of Laurent Pelly. It’s intelligent, thought-provoking, and a barrel of fun (in spite of its dystopian modern setting). Act I emphasizes the extreme poverty of Hansel and Gretel’s family by showing them living in a large cardboard box, one of several beautifully constructed, visually arresting sets designed by Barbara de Limburg. The children’s hunger is believable and heartbreaking, as is their ability to play and find joy in life despite their meager surroundings.

One of the challenges of this opera is finding adult singers who can credibly play children. In that respect, Seattle Opera has hit the jackpot with both casts: mezzo-sopranos Sasha Cooke and Sarah Larsen as Hansel, and sopranos Ashley Emerson and Anya Matanovic as Gretel. During the performances of opening weekend, both brother-sister pairs filled the stage with childlike antics and affectionate sibling chemistry – not to mention that all four sang divinely.

cy Stonikas and baritone Mark Walters also sang superbly, evoking the weariness and desperation of inadequate but basically loving parents who don’t know how they’re going to feed their family.

When Hansel and Gretel go out into the forest to search for berries, they’re in a barren landscape of dead trees and discarded trash. They play with the plastic bags and empty cans and bottles that litter the forest floor, and then comes the magic moment when the Sandman (Amanda Opuszynski, delightful in both this role and the role of the Dew Fairy) sprinkles sand into the children’s eyes to help them sleep. The final section of Act II contains the most glorious music in the opera: first the evening prayer duet, in which the soprano and mezzo-soprano voices blend perfectly; and then a long orchestral pas-

sage of sublime beauty, accompanying a dream pantomime in which Hansel and Gretel’s wishes are fulfilled.

One of the cleverest touches of this production is the handling of the dream pantomime. While the orchestra plays those sublime chords and Hansel and Gretel sleep, snuggled together on a log, TV screens descend over their heads and display the dreams of two starving modern children: syrup pouring endlessly onto a huge stack of pancakes, ice cream sundaes, chocolate fountains, ketchup being poured onto French fries. At the exact moment of the musical climax, all the screens show enormous Double Whoppers. Then, as the music winds to a close, we see the mouths of children eating all those junk foods.

Video is also used to good effect in introducing the Witch between Acts I and II.

ter. Ever cheerful, faithful and dedicated, Sancho realizes the Knight’s folly, yet blissfully follows along. Rivera’s charm is natural, graceful and easygoing, adding to the comic relief without being cartoonish or cliché. From the simple little body gestures to the impenetrable smile plastered on his face, the character of Sancho inadvertently steals every scene he is included in.

The lead of the show is Rufus Bonds Jr., playing the duel roles of Cervantes and Quixote. Bonds’ natural abilities play Quixote with a certain air of confusion and befuddlement, again without becoming a stereotype of madness. We never quite get submerged in Quixote’s illusions, but rather are allowed glimpses into his mind.

The line between Cervantes and Quixote is minimal, but we (the audience) can still go along with the transformation.

Man of La Mancha is a wonderful musical and the 5th Avenue Theatre does a great job presenting it. The newly installed sound system allows the audience to understand every word of either spoken dialogue or song; and that makes a show like this even more enjoyable. The audience already knows the breakaway hit song from this show, and it is truly enchanting to hear “The Impossible Dream” clearly, precisely and sung with great emotion.

Man of La Mancha first appeared on Broadway in 1965 and ran for over 2300 performances. Although not claiming to be faithful to the original novel, the story of the “mad” Knight went on to win five Tony Awards including Richard Kiley for Best Actor in a Musical. The show went on to inspire the film version that starred Peter O’Toole as the Knight, James Coco as Sancho, and Sophia Loren as Aldonza. The musical has been revived on Broadway four times including the most recent presentation in 2002 with Brian Stokes Mitchell as Quixote and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Aldonza.

While the orchestra plays the vigorous music of the Witch’s Ride, we see the Witch in shadow-box silhouette, trying to kick-start a series of brooms and finally finding one that works, then riding it all over the place at crazy angles.

The Witch’s house is not a gingerbread cottage but a supermarket, its shelves stuffed with garishly packaged goodies: candies, soda pop, cans of whipped cream.

Lighting designed by Joël Adam makes the colors brighter than life. Even while laughing, the audience can’t avoid noticing that the packaging is the source of the trash in the forest.

John Easterlin and Peter Marsh, the tenors who share the campy role of the Witch, keep this character amusing even when she’s becoming scary. Easterlin in the opening night cast did a better job with the vocal demands of the role than Marsh in the Sunday matinee cast.

Under the direction of conductor Sebastian Lang-Lessing, the orchestra sounded magnificent in both performances. However, the balance between orchestra and singers was somewhat better in the Sunday matinee performance than on opening night.

Five of the nine principal singers in this production (Cooke, Matanovic, Larsen, Stonikas, and Opuszynski) are alumnae of Seattle Opera’s erstwhile Young Artists Program, and their performances make the best possible case for reinstating that program. These singers are poised for important careers, not only because of their vocal skill and expressiveness, but also because of their impressive acting ability.

This is one of those rare opera productions in which everything works. I urge you not to miss it.

Taproot asks: Is God a game?

Matt seems to suggest that Tom “sprinkle a few more Jesuses into the conversation” and quote a few more Bible passages and that would likely allay any fears. Lisa refuses to allow Tom to “use” religious beliefs to falsely suggest he is more devout than is real.

The three actors here are more than up to the challenge of this script, and the script generally does a good job of exploring these issues. Visel has a rather smaller role, but some very choice moments where her character scores some very important points.

Tightly directed by Carol Roscoe, the script comes off well, though the relationship controversies are over-wrought and strain believability. There does not seem to be huge reasons why Matt should be so tightly entwined in the history of this couple. The idea that he, as a homosexual, is accepted into the inner circle of this presidential candidate is fine, but it is too pat for Matt to also be the former lover of Tom’s brother.

This is a production in Taproot’s smaller theater, the Isaac Studio, so the production values are diminished. Costumes for Tom and Lisa are quite well done by Janessa Jayne Styck, but I had a big problem with the distracting frumpiness and overly casual nature of what Matt was wearing. Tom and Lisa are dressed up while they are at home, while Matt is on business and looks far less professional than the couple.

The script gets a bit didactic and talky, but generally gets the job done. If you would like a chance to see people talking about whether religion should or should not be part of political discourse, this is a great play to see.

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer THE GOD GAME TAPROOT THEATRE Through October 29 Somehow, in the late 20th century through 2016, there has appeared a religious test in our political societal vetting. Particularly for Republicans, often one must be devoutly Christian and loudly and visibly so.

It may be that Trump is disrupting this idea, since he seems to barely know his Two Corinthians from his Thou Shalt Nots.

However, it’s enough of a “thing” that playwright Suzanne Bradbeer has crafted a play, set in the most present present, where a Senator is pressed to call upon Jesus and visibly display his faith during an election process.

The God Game displays the trenchant options in the political set, especially on the national stage. Here, Tom (played by David Drummond) is a senator from Virginia, well thought of and highly approved of, who is tapped to be vetted for a vice presidential running mate option. The presidential candidate is a controversial one, sounding similar to the disruptive Trump, but smart enough to want to have a diversity of opinions on his team.

The person who comes to Tom and Lisa’s home to present this option is a very old family friend, Matt (Cobey Mandarino).

Matt happens to also be a former partner to Tom’s now-deceased brother. He’s also been best friends with Lisa (Nikki Visel) for many years, but after the funeral has become estranged from them.

Tom is excited about the opportunity, but Lisa is concerned. Tom diverges from many Republican trope issues. Tom is, for instance, a believer in climate change, another of the beliefs many Republicans have caused politicians to religiously eschew in order to be elected. He wants to make sure that his voice will be heard by the presidential candi-

date. Matt assures Tom that the presidential candidate will hear Tom’s views on this.

But the biggest issue in front of them is that Tom may not be the most Christian of Christians, at this point and, in a national

campaign, that could cause huge problems for not only his being picked for vice president, but for the rest of his future political career.

Lisa is a devout believer, though she is very open and tolerant toward Tom’s issues.

Rita Moreno is a national treasure

by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN A&E Writer “AN EVENING WITH RITA MORENO” BROADWAY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS PANTAGES THEATRE – TACOMA October 16 Rita Moreno is one of America’s greatest treasures. She is one of the very few prestigious Grand Slam honorees; the winner of a Tony, Emmy, Oscar, and Grammy, and is the only living recipient of the Grand Slam and the Kennedy Center’s Lifetime Achievement Award. At the final concert (of three) in Washington state, this classic Lady of Entertainment took full control of Tacoma’s Pantages Theatre. [Rita Moreno also presented her show at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts in Olympia on October 13 and at the Edmonds Center for the Arts on October 15.]

The orchestra was a trio consisting of a pianist, a cellist and a percussionist.

Ms. Moreno was greeted by an enthusiastic audience and launched into a song proclaiming her love of Broadway. After several more numbers, she addressed and welcomed the audience. The proud 84year old (she will be 85 on December 11th) continued with several recording styles, including Broadway, classic jazz, swing, and two songs from her new CD exclusively in Spanish (Una Vez Mas) produced

City, accompanied by stories about both the residents and the tourists of “the Greatest City in the World.” Engaging the audience with personal stories between songs, she recounted tales of being born in Puerto Rico,

her first days on a Hollywood set, her eight year love affair with Marlon Brandon, and the time when Elvis’ manager called to ask her to go out on a date with The King of Rock and Roll.

Ms. Moreno put on an enjoyable concert.

Lasting just over 90 minutes (including a short intermission) the concert was more of a cabaret piece than a life-story told with music. While delivering a beautiful rendition of “I Won’t Send Roses” among new renditions of several other classic numbers, all songs from her film career, such as The King and I or her Academy Award-winning performance in West Side Story, remained absent. Delivering an encore from her latest recording, Rita Moreno seductively sang in her native language leaving the audience on a beautifully gentle note.

Rita Moreno left her native Puerto Rico and moved with her mother to New York City in 1936. She made her Broadway debut at 13 years of age before moving to California. After a noticeable, smaller role in the Gene Kelly film Singing in the Rain, Ms. Moreno was cast as Tuptim in the movie musical of The King and I. It was for her role as “Anita” in the film version of West Side Story that she won an Academy Award.

She continued in 1972 with a Grammy win for The Electric Company Album, a Tony Award for her role as Googie Gomez in The Ritz in 1975 (which she reprised in the 1976 film version), and in 1977 and 1978 she had two consecutive Emmy Award wins. She was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama, and was awarded the prestigious Kennedy Center Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award in 2015.

Against the Grain/Men in Dance Festival a terrific bi-annual showcase

AGAINST THE GRAIN/ MEN IN DANCE 2016 FESTIVAL: PROGRAM 2 (10/7-10/9) BROADWAY PERFORMANCE HALL October 9 This terrific bi-annual showcase of choreography made for male dancers typifies, for me, the fine qualities of the dance community in Seattle: inventive, diverse, and welcoming to up-and-coming choreographers and dancers. I wish I could have seen both programs, which give male and female choreographers a chance to create or remount dances for men. But any part of this two-weekend festival – designed to encourage the under-represented group of men and boys to participate in the dance world – is well worth seeing.

In this lengthy program of nine works, the enthusiastic audience saw a wide variety of ideas worked out using solo dancers, duets, trios, and, in “Backbone,” a group of five dancers. The Men in Dance commission doesn’t limit the number of dancers, but new works by new choreographers tend to be small. Even when only one or two men are dancing, however, the audience can clearly see the ideas and moves in the choreographer’s tool kit. Here are the dances for the Second Program in order of performance:

dancers on stage – trios, duets, solos, and quartets. Because all the men were equally strong, they could do equal lifts, making the dance even more complex. I didn’t get the narrative, but I didn’t much care – the

“Hothouse” by Bryon Carr and dancers Kince de Vera and Warren Woo All choreographers acknowledge the role that dancers play in the creation of their works. After all, the choreographer can only do what the dancers can do. I wonder how many times the dance-maker says “Can you do this?” and the dancer says “Sure – but I can also do this!” Bryon Carr’s dance is drawn not only on the capabilities of his two fine dancers – one significantly larger than the other, who lifts and carries his partner as a main feature of the dance – but also makes clever use of projections and light. “Hothouse,” here, refers to the relationship between two people, clearly depicted in the alternation between side-by-side dancing and an array of lifts.

What’s missing, in a short dance like this, is the surrounding narrative. I’d like to see Mr. Carr create a longer work that tells more of the story.

“Duet – Project 10” by Anne Conner One of five female choreographers in this year’s festival, Conner’s fascinating work explores the dimension of speed – in dancing and in life. Using a duo (not a duet since the dancers operate parallel but apart from one another) we see moves so slow that we might be in the butoh world of Sankai Juku.

Very slowly, as the dance unfolds, we see the dancers speed up until they are frantic, and frantically making repetitive gestures. This was a perfect depiction of the increasing pressures of modern life. “the home I grew up in” by Gierre J Godley and dancers Cesar Broderman, Mat Elder, Aaron McGloin, and Aaron R. White My dance buddy and I were at odds on what this dance was about. She saw children at play as the first of four dancers begins leaping around in a rabbit mask and red underpants (but she’s a mother), while I saw a dark secret life that animated the rest of the dancers, who all strip down to red underpants at the end. This dance is very acrobatic and exciting, drawing on the flexibility and strength of the dancers in an array of sophisticated lifts and variations.

Godley shows real aptitude for managing

[in]Hibition – not inhibited but…hibited?

Sorry to be the school marm, but in the absence of such a word as “hibition” this lively, athletic dance would be more appropriately [en]titled “Inhibition.”

dance itself was fascinating.

“Forgotten” by Jason Ohlberg This dance, performed to the aria from Bach’s “Goldberg Variations,” was a single dancer in classic balletic movement – a lovely break from the soundscapes and contemporary music of the typical modern program. The style was very close to the ground – fifth position pliés, arabesques and balances. The rendition of Bach was especially slow and beautiful, which challenged the dancer, Scotty Flores, to perform with grace and control. While the title suggests a melancholy tone of abandonment, I found it’s non-narrative beauty refreshing. “[in]Hibition” by Daniel Costa This highly athletic dance for four men was performed to live guitar with percussion. Kudos to Travis Corwin who played what sounded like improvisational sections, and to Costa, who moved his dancers on and off the stage very well.

I didn’t get the title, however. Things in brackets usually indicate a double meaning, as in [im]proper (not proper, but yet proper) or [in]significant (not significant, but yet significant). So I don’t know how to read

“CO” by Alex Allan This solo dance performed by the choreographer was a real show-stopper. On a stage bathed in blue light something that looks like a tail hangs down from the fly.

Slowly it becomes a rope, and even more slowly a man descends from the rope.

Because he’s dressed in jeans and a tee shirt, the rope looks like part of his natural habitat. My dance buddy thought the whole performance appeared to be underwater – slow, sinuous, gravity-defying – while I thought it looked like an alternative form of reality, as if gravity were a fraction of a man’s weight, and he needed a rope to stay attached to the earth. Either way, it was wonderful. The rope or pole dances I’ve seen men perform in the past have been demonstrations of upper body strength set to hard metal or rock music, but this was elegant, meditative, and beautiful – even though it demanded as much strength as circus-style aerial dances. I applaud Mr. Allen for taking this genre to a new place and performing it so gracefully. As for the title, I have no idea what it means. It would help me if titles would be more accessible so as to add meaning to the dance. I think chore-

“Providence” by Jamie Karlovich In this intriguing dance, a figure in a black hoodie, whose face we cannot see – a shadow-man – awakens a slumbering boy and guides him through stages of either a day or a lifetime, until the boy is finally enveloped by the shadow-man and falls asleep again (or dies). The music by Arvo Pärt was just right. If you know his “Tabula Rasa” you can imagine how it adds to the mysterious, otherworldly quality of the work. This was my favorite piece of the evening – coherent, complex, and narratively meaningful. I remember Karlovich’s dance “Murmuration” from last year’s Men in Dance Showcase, which was really cool but, in my opinion, somewhat meaningless.

In this dance she has taken leaps forward not only in movement but in ambition.

Dance is an art form that can bring meaning and insight to the viewer, but it takes an ambitious choreographer to go beyond the clever to the significant. I think Jaime Karlovich has taken that step, and it’s an exciting thing to see.

“Closing the Glass Door (2013)” by Randy James, 10 Hairy Legs I’m a fool for baroque music, and this dance duet was performed to Halverson’s “Passacaglia for Violin and Viola” on a theme by Handel. As each variation presents itself, two men in black, transparent (sexy, weird) costumes dance either together or apart, showing us variations in human relationships – or at least the variations in the relationship between these two guys. I thought the exploration in steps and movement revealed the changes in the musical theme beautifully, and the dancers – Robert Mark Burke and William Tomaskovic – were great. There was a real tension between the edgy way they looked, their range of movement, and the antiquity of the music, as if the same repulsion/attraction affects humans no matter when they live. This was my other favorite dance of the evening because it was thoughtful, intriguing, and (yes, my favorite word for dance) complex.

“Backbone” by Mike Esperanza and dancers Shane Donohue, Elijah Kirk, Sean Rosado, Alexander Pham, Ethan Schweitser-Gaslin This dance has a lovely dedication to the choreographer’s father, “a quiet man who showed his love through his fortitude.” I could see that dedication unfold as the five dancers moved together, apart, and around a central figure – at one point manipulating a long white veil in a very moving, dramatic way. My favorite sections of this dance were when all five men were dancing together – a far more difficult task for the choreographer than when some dancers are watching and one or two perform. I applaud Esperanza’s ambition and hope more Men in Dance choreographers have the opportunity to use larger dance forces as they develop their choreographic skills.

Stanley Wesley Perryman It is also important to note that this year’s Men in Dance Festival was dedicated to Stanley Wesley Perryman, “A dear friend and colleague, not to mention a beautiful and dynamic dancer.” The audience was able to confirm the dedication by watching a tribute film that opened the concert and showed Mr. Perryman performing everything from modern dance to ballet to tap. I only wish I could have seen him in person.

Biggest news? The interactive, live cinematic event The Long Haul has happily been rescheduled back at the Egyptian on Tuesday, November 1, so those excited to get a look at all the stripping madness will finally get their opportunity.

I’ve seen a few of the films being showcased during the next three days, almost all of which are worthy of a look, especially the closing night feature, The Pass, which will be getting a massive gala presentation at Seattle’s landmark Cinerama Theatre. The following are a handful of blurb reviews of the motion pictures I’ve had the opportunity to take a look at. Read on to learn what I thought of them.

Women Who Kill (7:00 pm 10/21 at AMC Pacific Place) *** Ingrid Jungermann’s nifty, nimble little mystery/thriller Women Who Kill is a funfilled comedic horror delight that’s just so much darn fun it’s remarkably easy to look past its more apparent missteps as they occur. The movie revolves around a podcast about female serial killers produced by friendly ex-girlfriends Morgan (writer/director Jungermann) and Jean (Ann Carr), the latter of whom is a bit clingier than she arguably should be. Things get interesting, though, when Morgan falls for the cute-asa-button Simone (Sheila Vand), and Jean begins to wonder if this doe-eyed ingénue is too good to be true. The sharp dialogue is what makes all this click, especially considering how haphazardly things ultimately fit together during the climactic stretch. This is a fun movie, and Jungermann shows a ton of filmmaking promise, making this a frothily ebullient delight difficult to speak ill of.

Slash (5:15 pm 10/22 at AMC Pacific Place) *** SIFF favorite Slash returns to Seattle, and it’s safe to say this marvelously entertaining piece of cosplay and fan-fiction lunacy is just as much fun the second time around as it was the first. Best to know as little as possible before viewing, the basics revolve around Neil (Michael Johnston), an aspiring writer whose whole world view is changed when he’s befriended by a website moderator, Julia (Hannah Marks), who happily takes him under her wing. What follows isn’t terribly original, but the presentation and execution certainly are, writer/ director Clay Liford doing a fine job of shepherding this idiosyncratic coming of age tale all the way through to its fitfully amusing conclusion.

King Cobra (9:15 pm 10/22 at AMC Pacific Place) ** The festival’s biggest missed opportunity, James Franco and Justin Kelly, the team behind I am Michael, reunite once again, this time to bring to the screen the story of gay porn icon Sean Paul Lockhart a.k.a.

Brent Corrigan (Garrett Clayton). With an all-star cast that includes Alicia Silverstone, Christian Slater, Molly Ringwald and Franco himself, the movie is a sexfilled romp that never finds its footing, essentially becoming a toothless biopic more interested in its visual flourishes than it is in revealing anything essential about the main character.

Torrey Pines (12:30 pm 10/22 at AMC Pacific Place) ***1/2 Writer/director Clyde Petersen’s astonishing opening night feature gets an encore screening, this animated marvel a heartfelt, emotionally pure gem that just gets better and better the more I think about. This coming-of-age tale somehow manages to avoid cliché as it makes its punk rock way through its marvelously concise narrative structure, building to a fantastic conclusion that’s as powerful as it is authentic.

The Watermelon Woman (2:45 pm 10/22 at AMC Pacific Place) ****

The Pass (6:30 pm 10/23 at Cinerama) *** Visually dynamic drama with “Quantico” star Russell Tovey as a dynamic upand-coming soccer pro having to grapple with his sexuality under the most unimaginable of conditions. Adapted by director John Donnelly from his own play, while nothing truly surprising ever happens, the authenticity of the circumstances and the emotions at the center of things is always beyond reproach. Tovey is mesmerizing in the lead, while relative newcomer Chris O’Driscoll’s cinematography is oftentimes jaw-dropping in its mesmeric intensity.

country home she intends to build with her husband Ryan (James Le Gros), burrowing through his apparent indifference with relaxed, if unamused, certainty. At the same time, young Beth Travis (Kristen Stewart), a law student fresh out of college, travels four hours once a week to teach a class to a room full of educators, ranch hand Jamie (Lily Gladstone) drawn to attend for reasons she can barely put words to.

Adapted from stories written by Montana author Maile Meloy, writer/director Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women ranks alongside her 2008 stunner Wendy and Lucy as an essential piece of modern cinematic excellence. A breathless entertainment, as simple and as straightforward as it is austere and ephemeral, this is a tale of life, of how that life is lived and of the connections that are made as one travels down its mysterious road. More specifically, it is a saga of four women from entirely different walks of life who are nowhere as dissimilar as they might appear, each trying to make the most of the situations they are in, the choices they have made and relationships they have forged every step along their respective journeys.

Essentially three short stories viewed as informal snapshots, garnering insight into what is happening with Laura, Gina, Lily and Beth at the time each photo is taken, Reichardt isn’t interested in overcomplicating matters, doesn’t feel inclined to add extra bits of melodramatic convolution just for the sake of added emotional embellishment. She instead trusts both her cast as well as her audience, letting the mundane nature of everyday life become its own intensely enthralling spotlight that magnifies the nuances of the various situations each woman is currently in. There’s no fat here, no extraneous filler, and as such the overall

effect the film had on me while I watched it was close to breathtaking.

Dern’s tale is probably the easiest to process, the parallels to current discussion about double standards and sexism in the workplace plainly obvious. Even so, this segment, which also features a sublime, captivatingly complex turn from Harris, is absolutely enthralling. There is a pugnacious resilience to Dern’s performance that’s sensational, especially during an unforeseen twist that forces Laura to take a form of action she never could have anticipated having to take. But it’s also the little things, the way she reacts to Harris sitting next to her in the car or her body movements when a male lawyer tells her client the exact same thing she’s been saying for weeks as if speaking to a brick wall only to have them understand instantly when it isn’t a woman speaking to them.

Williams’ section is arguably the weakest, if only because it is seemingly the most

banal. And yet, that would be missing the point, the dialogues Gina has with both her husband Ryan, their teenage daughter Guthrie (Sara Rodier) and a family friend, Albert (Rene Auberjonois), sitting on a wealth of unused stone speaking understated volumes. The directness of this sequence hides a number of telling secrets, many of which I didn’t even realize were there until after the film had come to an end and I found myself mulling over its numerous ins and outs hours later.

But it is the segment chronicling Jamie and Beth that might just be Reichardt’s finest single moment as a filmmaker. While it can appear to some tired eyes nothing is happening here, in reality the beauteous eloquence of this section is positively electrifying. Using Meloy’s delicate prose as a starting point, what the director discovers during this unexpected meeting up of two exceedingly different personalities is a breathtaking union that defies simplistic

characterization. Why are we drawn to do things we do? What are the repercussions of the choices we make? What scars can linger without our knowing? And is it sometimes better to make an intimate connection and potentially lose it than to never have attempted to make it happen in the first place? These questions and more haunt this climactic portion of the story, the superlative, naturalistic radiance of newcomer Gladstone sensationally juxtaposed alongside the jittery, angelic intensity of Stewart’s authentically realized supporting turn.

Moving outside of Oregon for the first time, Reichardt utilizes her Montana locales with effortless confidence, Christopher Blauvelt’s (The Bling Ring) intoxicating camerawork making the picturesque mountain ranges surrounding the town appear as if they were a snow-capped giant observing the four women from on high. The sound design is also something extraordinary, and from train whistles, to the gentle clomping of a horse’s hooves on frozen asphalt, to voices on a radio talking about the day’s events, all of it helps create a milieu of a lived-in ordinariness that’s wondrous.

Reichardt makes good movies, some of which I’ve adored (Wendy and Lucy), others I’ve appreciated if not entirely enjoyed (Night Moves, Meek’s Cutoff ) and some I’ve never entirely warmed to even though I respected the craftsmanship that made them possible (Old Joy). But, make no mistake, every film this director has touched has been one discerning audiences owe it to themselves to see, each an original, idiosyncratic sojourn into the human condition that looks at life in ways that are personal, thought-provoking and sincere. With Certain Women, Reichardt has delivered something exemplary once again, the places it goes and the people it deals with as real as any sitting on the other side of the average person’s living room window.

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer CERTAIN WOMEN Now playing Based on the short stories of Montana author Maile Meloy, writer/director Kelly Reichardt’s latest understated drama Certain Women is a revelatory exercise in cinematic minimalism. A three-prong story following four women – lawyer Laura (Laura Dern), businesswoman, wife and mother Gina (Michelle Williams), law student Beth (Kristen Stewart) and rancher Jaime (Lily Gladstone) – as they go about their day-today lives, the movie is an intimate journey into the human condition. More than that, though, it is a story about companionship and community, a heartfelt aria to finding hope in the drudgery of the familiar, and as such resonated with me on a deeply personal level that left me virtually in awe.

“The characters,” Reichardt exclaims, talking about Meloy’s stories and what it was about them that initially captured her attention, “they are so rich. I was instantly drawn to them. I loved the missed opportunities to connect and then the accidental connections that happen between people who you do not think would happen. All of that, but also the way they all fit inside their environment. It’s great, and there are

“But you might be right. I think it’s just that I like giving my characters things to do.

Cars to drive. Cows to work with. Chores to do. I think it can be freeing, because it gives you so much to concentrate on. You can get across who the character is through their whole body, their physicality and how they sit inside the landscape. You need to get an idea of the world that exists outside of the realm of the dialogue, find additional facets that help reveal who they are. Are they capable? Are they isolated? Are they vulnerable? This can all come through by where [the character] is inside the frame and what it is they are doing. It’s just good, challenging stuff, and I like to let my characters experience all of it.”

As far as challenges were concerned, the biggest one was trying to figure out which of the author’s tales to focus on inside the film, tests the filmmaker was eager and excited to tackle. “In Maile’s original story, the rancher, Jamie, is a young boy,” says Reichardt, “so I did make a number of changes during the script writing process.

But Maile was brave and generous, letting me just go my own way, let me screw around with her stories, which admittedly at times led to some really bad drafts.

Which was good, because she also allowed me the freedom to switch out one story for another, to play with how each one would

But Jon was working on a new novel, and he wanted to finish that so I started looked for stories that were not derived in Oregon to stay out of his hair. Maile’s stories are all set in Montana, and I was ready to try a new landscape and thought I should challenge myself.”

“It’s funny how the landscape can really be inspiring and can make you feel isolated, sometimes all in the confines of the same day,” expounds Reichardt. “I’m in New York City all the time, and I’m constantly like, what a hole, why am I here? But then something amazing will happen and I’m like, this is the greatest place in the world!

I can’t imagine being anywhere else. And you’re having these feelings because suddenly all the streetlights are going in your direction and that’s why you’re feeling that way; it can be that simple.

“In this case, being in Montana, it was the first time I was living in a place that was entirely landlocked. You’re seeing these mountain ranges that completely surround the area and, they’re beautiful, but they also isolate you, sort of wrap you in. But it’s also just the pace of how people move there.

It’s a real difference. I ended up becoming attached to the place more than I thought I would, I have to say. Also, once I found that ranch, everything else, all the visuals in the film, they sort of sprouted out from

the big ongoing challenges,” she admits.

“How do you find the points to connect or, just as importantly, when not to connect, one story to another one, that really was one of the biggest challenges we faced. There was a lot of trial and error involved, not just while writing the script, but also while filming and in the editing room as well. Instead of plot driving these women together it became more about the sound design.

The idea that the sound of the train would give you an idea of where one character is in relation to another one. What was playing on the radio. Stuff like that. Stuff you almost don’t even realize is there.

“Sound is everything. Sound is a lot of the game. And I ended up getting really lucky with my sound team here, because this was all on location, and it was super, super windy for much of the shoot. Every circumstance was such a challenge, and I kept expecting them to tell me that we couldn’t shoot because of the conditions.

But none of that was ever said. Not once.

I’m really grateful to all of them. They did a masterful job.”

As for what audiences get out of Certain Women, the filmmaker is refreshingly succinct. “I just hope the movie gets seen,” says Reichardt matter-of-factly. “There are so many films out there right now, so many good ones, so many that even I’d like to run and go and see, so I do hope they make the

so many layers hidden there waiting to be discovered. Also, in the final story, in Beth and Jamie’s story, just the idea of watching someone do their chores. I enjoy that. It’s something that’s always fascinated me.”

When looking at many of the director’s previous films, most notably Old Joy and the magnificent Wendy and Lucy, it’s easy to surmise that Reichardt is fascinated by the small things, that she adores minutia, unafraid to show her characters doing the most mundane of activities in order to dig deeper into the core of who they truly are.

“I love minutia?” she asks with a laugh. “I

eventually connect to the other, and I can’t thank her enough for that. So it took a while to figure out how all of this would fit together, and some that took going down to Montana so I could understand that environment for myself.”

Like all of Reichardt’s films, said environment is a major player in Certain Women, becoming a pivotal fifth character as the story progresses towards its conclusion.

Yet, for fans of the director, it is admittedly disconcerting to see her working on a story not co-written with Jon Raymond and set inside the Oregon wilderness. “I know!

there. Getting into the rhythm of working with that ranch owner, getting to know her and her husband, how all the animals were attached there, all of that helped me get really connected to the people and the place.

Once you get your daily routine down in a place that informs everything else. I think you can see the good, the bad and all the beautiful in-between when watching the film. At least, I hope you can.”

Turning back to the film’s structure, one of the more intriguing components is how delicate each of the three stories connects one to the other. “That was always one of

time to go see this one. I do hope that audiences, when they see it, I hope they understand and appreciate the concept, and I’d be very happy if they make up their own mind as to what has been going on and what it all has been about. But, I do hope, in light of all the hostility in our world right now, that people see something about community, about togetherness and about women, that they haven’t thought about in a little while, and that they see how we are all connected even if we don’t realize it. I want us all to be looking out for one another.”

Inspired Demon a subversive descent into madness

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer DEMON Now playing Piotr (Itay Tiran) has made the journey from the hustle and bustle of England to the secluded Polish countryside to marry his fiancée Zaneta (Agnieszka Zulewska). As a gift, her family has given him their large, rundown country home for him to do with as he pleases, thinking he’d be pleased at the idea of fixing it up and returning it to its former glory. While doing a routine inspection, Piotr inadvertently crashes into a pit of human remains, their discovery a surprise that leaves him understandably shaken.

The next day, while the wedding itself goes off without a hitch, during the reception Zaneta notices her new husband is acting strangely. As the night progresses, Piotr begins to feel less and less like himself, almost as if he is possessed by some sort of spirit.

Long hidden secrets are unceremoniously revealed, Zaneta’s father (Andrzej Grabowski) increasingly agitated as things spiral out of control and his new son-in-law starts spouting supernatural gibberish that could potentially lead to his good name being dragged through the mud and forever ruined.

The final film from revered Polish director Marcin Wrona (My Flesh My Blood) and inspired by Jewish folklore, most notably legends associated with the supernatural force known as a dybbuk, Demon isn’t a horror movie although there are moments of suspense and terror that stop the blood cold. Yet, it is also not an intense relationship drama, even though moments of pain, sorrow, love, sacrifice and madness are continually on display. All the same, it is still not a comedy, even if scenes of bleak,

unbridled pitch black humor are so pointedly strong it’s impossible not to watch the film without laughing out loud at least a couple of times as events spiral hopelessly out of Piotr’s control.

Pawel Maslona crafting a story where science, superstition and religion walk handin-hand in uneasy truce, only to be beaten and battered down by a wrathful presence that doesn’t appear to care how much collateral damage it leaves in its wake. But as crazy as it all might be this story is pecu-

liarly enchanting in an uncomfortably surrealistic way, its delectable charms increasing in number as things progress to their inevitably bleak conclusion. It’s a witty tale, one where the ins and outs are as gruesome as they are thoughtful. But while some of the interior mechanics connecting one character to the next aren’t always satisfactory, the main themes propelling things forward are, most managing to be pleasingly universal no matter how esoteric they might initially appear to be.

It’s all crisply shot by frequent Wrona collaborator Pawel Flis (The Christening), his robust, eerily crafty cinematography keeping just enough on the side of the frame to keep the viewer guessing as to what might be going on just outside of their direct line of sight. The film toys with its audience, tilting between comedy, drama and horror in ways that are continually surprising and, even better, increasingly unsettling. This allows tension to build naturally and in a bracingly believable manner, the human horror of what it is Piotr is facing all the more palpably disturbing because of this.

It isn’t a continuous smooth sail, and some of the more eccentric narrative machinations can be moderately tiresome, especially during a slightly lumpy midsection where the groom starts his spiral into possession and Zaneta, her father and a handful of others wonder what the heck is going on. Thankfully, there are so many striking moments, and Tiran’s performance is just so gosh darn terrific, that any hiccups that do arise are few and far between.

Best of all, Wrona builds things to the type of shattering, emotionally catastrophic climax that lingers in the mind long after the curtain has closed, making Demon a paranormal descent into madness and mayhem that’s hauntingly good.
