Celebrating 45 Years!

Elbo Room art exhibition space on Capitol Hill hosts grand opening Oct. 12 At less than 120 sq. feet, the Elbo Room (1633 Bellevue Ave. Suite 302) is a small addition to the Capitol Hill art scene allowing local LGBT, immigrant and refugee artists to showcase their work; host exhibitions and sell art. The space is small but the art is big.

The Elbo Room is a new project of local attorney, Andre Olivie, owner of the LGBT immigration law firm formerly located in the Funke Building on E Olive Way and now located in South Lake Union at 1836 Westlake Ave N, Suite 302. www.olivielaw.com.

On October 12, The Elbo Room will open with an exhibition of the work of Capitol Hill artist, Julian Peña. The grand opening is from 7-9pm.

Julian is a gay American of Japanese and Dominican ancestry. He uses serialized avatars to present narratives of a fictional universe with and whimsical and bizarre creatures. Original works and limited addition prints will be available for sale.

Lana Del Rey’s concert was terrific!

TOUR WAMU THEATER October 2 Lana Del Rey brought her dreamy, West Coast-only Norman Fucking Rockwell! tour to a sold-out WaMu Theater last week and left the audience enrapt and enamored as only she can. The performance was simple, the set fairly sparse – a palm tree here, a swing laced with flowers there – but let’s face it, no one goes to see Lana Del Rey for dance squad choreography and flashy costumes. What’s driven her fan base absolutely bananas over the years is her stripped down accessibility and “realness”, her modern take on poetic self-reflection, and most of all, that voice, which has only grown richer and lovelier with time.

With Norman Fucking Rockwell! Lana Del Rey presents a perfect ‘70s mood-ring of a record. Paying tribute to a golden, wistful era of California folk rock, the album is underscored as always by a touch of Lana’s lyrical darkness. With NFR, it seems that optimism and happiness are actually winning. Her music since 2016’s Lust for Life has taken a wider lens to American life than her previous work: instead of reflecting mostly on partying and kissing boys, these days she also sings about escalating political tensions (“Coachella – Woodstock In My Mind”) with a degree of protectiveness for future generations’ right to grow up hopeful and carefree (“Love”). NFR is her most sophisticated work yet, and one wouldn’t be out of line to suspect the singer is in love – full grown woman love. “No hype under these covers, it’s just me, and you…is it safe, is it safe to just be who we are?’” she sings on the new album’s “Love Song”.

Starting her WaMu appearance with the title track from NFR, she performed 18 songs including a plaintive cover of Joni Mitchell’s “For Free”. Flanked by two sultry, swaying backup singers in white baby

doll dresses and matching go-go booties, Lana went casual in jeans, thigh-high black suede boots, and a crocheted crop sweater over a white tank. The set’s emphasis was on new material: “Bartender”, “Mariners Apartment Complex”, and “Doin’ Time”, as well as a gorgeous outtake of “Cinnamon Girl” and “Happiness is a Butterfly”. She visited Lust for Life with “White Mustang” and “Cherry”, and then returned to modern classics “Blue Jeans”, “Video Games”,

“Ride”, “Summertime Sadness” and “Off to the Races”. A medley of “Change”/”Black Beauty”/“Young and Beautiful” had every body in the theater gently swaying.

Mid-set selfie breaks with fans were this time relegated to the final song, “Venice Bitch”, during a long instrumental outtake.

Lana clearly enjoys providing photo-ops for her young fans; it’s become a highly anticipated part of her concerts. Having waited patiently through lengthy, mid-set bouts of

this on previous tours, it was nice that at least on this one it happened during the last song.

Through her previous work, Lana Del Rey has worn her influences as a badge of honor: hip-hop, jazz, torch songs, stonerpsychedelia, and now on to epic Laurel Canyon soft rock with her most intimate, sweeping album yet. At 34 and six albums in, it sounds as if Lana Del Rey is only just beginning to hit her full artistic stride.

continued from cover The majority of the art in this exhibition has never been seen by the public as we have assembled works from family collections, national and local private collections as well as major institutions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Many people are aware of what is termed “The Northwest School” which gave the region a national identity after a 1953 LIFE magazine article that profiled the featured artists. Three of the four major painters associated with this movement were gay and we will be examining

their work in relation to their personal life experiences.

We are featuring a few well-known artists such as Mark Tobey (1890-1976) and Morris Graves (1910-2001). However, the strength of the exhibition will be in the reintroduction of extraordinarily talented but lesser-known figures such as Thomas Handforth (1897-1948), Mac Harshberger (1900-1975), Orre Nelson Nobles (18941967, Sarah Spurgeon (1903-1985) and Virginia Weisel (1923-2017). Mediums represented include paintings, drawings, photography, design objects and ceramics.

Our West Gallery will feature adult oriented paintings and photography that will be viewable only by adults over the age of 18.

An opening reception will be held Wednesday, October 23, from 5-8pm, for members and guests. The exhibit runs Thursday, October 24 through Sunday, January 26.

As they say on their website: “When this organization was founded (in 1994) we sincerely felt that pursuing a career in dance was a major uphill battle for a man. That is not true in the same way today, though there are still far fewer men in the dance field as a whole.”

But whoa, back! Maybe Men In Dance spoke too soon. On August 26, 2019, Lara Spencer, a host on “Good Morning America,” openly ridiculed six-year-old Prince George of England for loving his ballet class. She encouraged the audience to laugh along as she reported that “Prince William says George absolutely loves ballet. I have news for you, Prince William – we’ll see how long that lasts!” The reaction from the dance world to this insult was swift and sharp – numerous messages

from famous dancers and choreographers appeared on social media scolding her for being so backward, and reminding her of the great male dancers who defied attitudes like hers to have careers in dance. George Balanchine, Arthur Mitchell, Robert Joffrey, Rudolf Nureyev, Mark Morris, Alvin Ailey, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Alwin Nikolais, Jose Limon, Merce Cunningham, Fred Astaire, Bob Fosse, Justin Peck, Gregory Hines, Paul Taylor, Michael Bennett, William Whitener, Ulysses Dove, Gene Kelly, Tommy Tune – the list goes on and on. Even Gene Kelly’s widow chimed in, saying “Gene would be devastated to know that 61 years after his ground-breaking work, the issue of boys and men dancing is still the subject of ridicule – and on a national network.” Male dancers and their female supporters from all over the city gathered in front of “Good Morning America”’s studios in Times Square to protest Spencer’s ignorant comments by conducting a free dance class for boys and girls Despite Spencer’s apologies and efforts to backtrack on her foolish and harmful comments, the pushback against this prejudice against men and boys dancing – and against all gendered categories of work – continues to grow. Speaking as a woman who was told in the 4th grade that I couldn’t be an engineer because, in spite of high test scores in mechanical ability, I was a girl (this was in 1960), I despise the casual, withering attitudes that condemn children to gender stereotypes, and bully them if they don’t conform. Sorry, Lara Spencer – apologies may save your career, but you will be forever remembered as the troglodyte who made fun of a young boy for loving his dance class.

All the more reason to be grateful to Men In Dance (apparently still against the grain) for their brilliant encouragement of men and boys who want to enter the creative field of dance and choreography. For the third year in a row Men In Dance have offered young choreographers an opportunity to produce new dances and to hear experienced choreographers and dance professors evaluate their work in front of the audience. It’s a triple-win situation for everyone. The choreographers get to show their work, the dancers get to have dances made on their bodies, and the audience gets to hear how professionals critique and encourage new dance makers.

This year’s showcase consisted of five works by two women and three men, and was performed, of course, by an all-male-identifying troupe of excellent dancers. In the order of performance, here’s what happened at Velocity Founders Theater – a wonderfully intimate venue where dance lovers can see works “up close and personal”:

“THIS IS THE REACTABILITY OF THE APPETIZER” CHOREOGRAPHER: BETH TERWILLIGER DANCERS: CORBIN HALL, MAEVE HASELTON, ROBERT MOORE, THOMAS PHELAN MUSIC: BRYCE DESSNER + KRONOS QUARTET Four dancers appear in white pants, red socks and bare chests except for black tape that encircles their breasts. One dancer with long hair stands upstage left and executes robot movements to the percussive, aggressive sounds of mechanical music, while two other dancers enter and to more lyrical music perform a soft, elegant dance, followed by a man who dances to a cello solo and seems to humanize the robot in the background. The dance moves are highly contrasted between the mechanical and the humane, as is the narrative, which seems to be about being human in an atmosphere that militates against the full expression of higher life and feelings.

All of which seems to have little to do with the program notes, in which Terwilliger explains her dance as inspired by early motherhood, and her desire to support her children for “who they are and not who society expects them to be.” I wish the title of the dance helped us out a bit, but so what? It was a fascinating dance, full of interesting duets (a smaller person supporting a much larger partner on their shoulders), solos (one dancer jogging up and down while another performs an impressive string of pirouettes across the back of the stage), and a very exciting unison dance at the end, involving a wide range of ballet, modern, and karate moves. I thought the soundscape was very compelling.

BY ROOMFUL OF TEETH Hathaway is an experienced dancer and choreographer who originated this work for the men of the Milwaukee Ballet II – six dancers – and pared it down to two dancers for Men In Dance. I would have liked to see the six-man group, because what we saw in Seattle was so perfectly calibrated for two men who moved through a wide range of emotional expressions that it’s hard to imagine it for a larger corps. (There is a video on FB but it wouldn’t open for me). The music was closely harmonized and hymn-like as the pair danced in mirror images. Was it one person studying himself, or a pair studying each other? The dancing was very impressive, varied, and skilled as the two personas moved through images of joy, anguish, rejection, and reconciliation. The soundscape turns harsh at the end, though, as one figure mimes the theft of the heart (or soul) of the other – an ambiguous and unexpected note that left this viewer curious. I guess it was the soul drawing back – but the one thing you don’t want to do with an abstract form like dance is to impose a too literal story on it. The left brain is always seeking a narrative, but the right brain is OK with images – and this dance ended on a very powerful image.

“HE KEPT HIM” CHOREOGRAPHER: ELISE MEINERS SCHWICHT DANCERS: ELIJAH KIRK, ROBERT MOORE, JORDAN ROHRS, BEN SWENSON, ALEX UNG MUSIC: MAX EASTLEY, STEVE BERESFORD, PAUL BURWELL, JOHN TAVENER, DAVID TOOP This dance had the largest group of dancers to convey its meaning, inspired, as Schwicht wrote in her program notes, by the concept expressed in Deuteronomy 32 (“he kept him as the apple of his eye”) of being a reflection in the eye of the beloved, or the “little man of the eye”. How this plays out in the dance – which was more like pantomime – was varied and complex, with men crawling, scratching, running in place, gesturing in large ambiguous motions, and finally coming together in a unison dance in which they link elbows and flow together like a bird’s wing or ripple of water. That was my favorite part and I wish it had lasted longer. This was a dance that any healthy person (who can count) could do – my note to myself is that there wasn’t much dance in it, even though Schwicht had the largest dance forces. Her ending sequence was so beautiful that I hope in the future she will use more of that aspect of her choreographic gift, to have dancers actually dance together.

moving side-by-side in unison – not really together, but in a unity – as if to demonstrate that what happens together happens to the group, whereas what happens solo just happens to me. It seems obvious, but this dance made me consider the distinction in a way I hadn’t considered before – or at least didn’t seem as relevant as it does now in our current political universe. You don’t have to like each other to get along. You can cooperate.

Mardon should take this dance to the other Washington and do it for Congress.

Two handsome fellows in striped shorts and cut-off tee shirts have a vamping competition that takes various forms through out the sequences – bobbing up and down, shoving each other around, turning on each other, ignoring each other. But when they get together and put on a show – with sassy posing, splits, lifts, and gymnastics – the audience went wild, just as we were meant to do. Mardon has something interesting to say about cooperation, and he says it very clearly. The final sequence of this delightful dance has the two men

He explains in the program notes that an unnatural pattern in mathematics is a statistical distribution that indicates “the presence of outside disturbances affecting a process.” What this looks like in dance is men who are blinded by light, whose tee shirts are pulled over their heads, who are regimented like machines, and whose relationships are uprooted by the third person – the unnatural pattern. Though this fragmented description makes it sound like a fragmented dance, it wasn’t. It was a real dance rather than a pantomime – the dancers were very skilled, the dance vocabulary was complex, the movement was powerful.

Ojeda is clearly a choreographer to watch, and I’m very glad he had this opportunity to make a dance in Seattle.

All together, the 2019 Adjudicated Choreographers Showcase was a huge success, as the full house audience demonstrated with their cheers of approval. I stayed for the adjudications, and was fascinated to hear the technical comments of the professional dance teachers who offered advice.

Their focus was on the micro level (distance between dancers that describe the spaces; duration of poses and clarity of gestures; relationship of music to narrative, etc.) My focus is on the macro level – why are there so many dances to soundscapes and so few dances to composed music (there were none in this showcase); why is there so much gestural pantomime and less use of dancers to form larger patterns; why so much narrative and so little lyric dancing? These seem to be generational questions – I know I’m an older viewer coming from more traditional dance scenes. Even my favorite choreographers – Balanchine, Mark Morris, Crystal Pite – must seem older to these young choreographers.

What a privilege to see young dancemakers emerge, and what a service to art Men in Dance provides by encouraging men and boys to follow their bliss and engage in dancing. Boo on Lara Spencer and all her ilk whose inclination is to make fun of people who defy gender stereotypes in order to do what their spirits tell them.

Yay for Prince William who told some young street dancers that “If it’s something you love, do what you love – don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.” Those are wise words for all young people, and especially for boys who want to dance (and girls who want to be engineers).

streetwise thief; and her father, Kenyatta, who was a political prisoner and was once a revolutionary in his younger days fighting for social justice. Presented in collaboration with The Hansberry Project, Sunset Baby is a fine season opener for ArtsWest Playhouse and Gallery (4711 California Ave SW).

Kenyatta seeks reconnection with his daughter and to also recover some cherished letters written to him by his late wife while he was in prison. This absent father/ daughter scenario is emotionally explosive and on Nina’s’ side filled with seething anger. Nina, who was named after singer and civil rights activist Nina Simone, knows her mother’s (Ashanti X) letters are worth some money to scholars and does not want to hand them over to her father. These beloved letters are her mother’s only physical legacy for her and for her father. She knows that with these treasures, her future dreams of living in London are breaking open. As Nina Simone famously sings in the opening of the play, “… it’s a new day/ it’s a new dawn/it’s a new life for me”.

Besides the scenes in the flat, the story intermittently cuts away to Kenyatta, who shares his feelings to a video camera for Nina. These deft monologues provide context for Nina to truly understand her childhood and her parents’ lives before she was born and for Kenyatta to clarify his life’s choices and set the record straight to maybe ease Nina’s mind a bit.

Morisseau’s dialogue is an impressive balance of street language and social philosophy while revealing the intricate mechanisms of complex characters. With this, however, the story does seem a bit like a collegiate thesis, but overall the writing shines through with the strong and talented acting undoubtedly guided by noted director Valerie Curtis-Newton.

Curtis-Newton brings together the most vital elements of the story with these three impressive actors. Marcel Davis

commandingly plays Kenyatta with sweet intensity. Aishé Keita (perfection in this role) captures Nina’s emotional volatility while revealing vulnerability. As Damon, Tyler Trerise’s wonderful performance is a wrenching depiction of a romantic who sees his life of crime (and relationship with Nina) as a stepping stone to something better. Despite characters with contradictions due to the superficial descriptions written

by Morisseau, the acting gives the story an authentic polish.

Coming from a family who were civically and politically active, I understood elements of Sunset Baby. Quite similarly

to this story, my parents had to leave their activists lives due to government interference. However, this play comes off as slightly lackluster because of the implausibility of Kenyatta’s apparent legendary status and Nina’s mother’s equally impressive ties to noted African American activists.

Just why are those letters so valuable? If this had been delved into more deeply, then the story would definitely have taken on a more meaningful historical resonance.

Morisseau’s brilliant theme that ties in family discord and justifiable abandonment is pretty compelling here, but the sense of urgency seemed a tad melodramatic. She

achieved much more in her Detroit autoworkers layoff narrative, Skeleton Crew, that ArtsWest presented last year – another play that tied into my family history. In Sunset Baby, we learn the cause and effect of when you have no choice but to stand up for your beliefs. Sunset Baby examines the drastic consequences of this journey and how love can sometimes be a liability. But as Nina Simone sings her delightful cover of The Beatles’/George Harrison song as the play closes, “Here comes the sun, and I say it’s all right…”

The Christians sparks heavenly debate

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer THE CHRISTIANS PONY WORLD THEATRE PLYMOUTH CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH October 11-13 ST PETERS EPISCOPAL CHURCH October 17-19; 24-26 While watching the masterful Lucas Hnath play, The Christians, unfold in a real church, it occurred to me that you could probably rather neatly divide the world into two camps: those who believe in Hell and those who don’t. It’s a pretty big issue, especially to fundamentalist churches, where many or most of them preach particularly that those who don’t believe in Jesus are doomed to Hell, and therefore family members with different beliefs could end up in different afterlives from each other.

That idea – being in different afterlives than other relatives you love – is a pretty big part of the imperative to make sure your relatives believe what you believe. It’s so important that it can dictate what kind of church or community you belong to, even if all the choices are “Christian” and if all the attendees “believe in Jesus as their Lord and Savior.”

Hnath has written a play that explores these issues between believers. It’s a disarming slice-of-life play, much of which feels like real conversations between real people. In a way, it’s almost too low-key.

Even as events seem to spiral out of control, no one in the play becomes overwrought.

That may seem like a flaw to you, or it may be an aspect you like very much.

We meet Pastor Paul (Evan Whitfield in a role that is perfect for his everyman, understated delivery) on a big day for the congregation. This now-mega-church, with

“thousands of seats, classrooms for Sunday school, a baptismal font as big as a swimming pool,” which started from poor and small beginnings incurred a huge debt during their expansion. Paul announces the debt has finally been paid.

But Paul has another story to tell about an incident he heard about that has changed his attitude and understanding about the fundamentals of Hell. He decides that the congregation is no longer the kind that believes in Hell. He’s ready to clarify that the Hell named in Biblical teachings (Gehenna or Gehinom) is actually referencing a garbage pit outside of Jerusalem, and not a place of afterlife torment, at all.

As congregants strive to understand the changes this requires, Assistant Pastor Joshua (Fune Tautala) finds himself unable to agree and that he must therefore leave the church. Now, congregants like Jenny (Pilar

O’Connell), church elder Jay (Mark Fullerton), and ultimately Paul’s wife, Elizabeth (Sunam Ellis) and his child all have to grapple with the fallout.

As tautly directed by Leah AdcockStarr, for Pony World Theatre, all the conversations are real and reasonable. Difficult, tense, conflicted, searching, questioning. Each actor does lovely work portraying these characters realistically. No character is perfect, but every character is someone each audience member might relate to.

Every argument on each side of this issue seems to be playing out in the short 90-minute play. Which argument is made better is likely something you decide based on whether you are a “Hell” believer or not, yourself.

A convention used at Hnath’s direction is that every moment of dialogue is made through a microphone. In an echoey church,

it’s hard to hear sometimes and after about a third of the script, Hnath inserts “he said” and “she said” as commentary that Pastor Paul adds to the dialogue which removes it from immediacy.

A surprising script aspect for Pastor Paul, as a character, is his apparent lack of transparency with anyone at the church prior to making this bonfire of a speech, including his wife. Toward the end of the play, we find out the impact of that decision-set on her and their family and it’s not a fun one for him.

A church choir and a real choir director, Beth Ann Bonnecroy, add to the atmosphere as they lead the audience in songs, with lyric sheets at hand. With all this reality around you, it’s easy to feel like you’re a congregant, as well.

If you are turned on by ideas, if your spiritual quest leads you to conundrums like these, you’ll be very happy to attend this service! It’s quite likely that you and your companion will have a great argument or two over the ideas presented, which for some people is their idea of Heaven.

Thoughtfully meditative Low Tide an intriguing dramatic thriller

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer LOW TIDE Now playing In a nondescript New Jersey beach town, teenagers Red (Alex Neustaedter), Alan (Keean Johnson) and Smitty (Daniel Zolghadri) raid the summer vacation houses of wealthy out-of-towners looking for valuables they can surreptitiously sell to local pawn shops. After Smitty breaks his ankle, Red convinces Alan to allow his quiet, intellectually introspective little brother Peter (Jaeden Martell) to join them

and not every member of the trio ends up keeping from getting caught. What becomes obvious is that Red cannot be trusted, his violent mood swings and angry outburst far more dangerous than any of his wary friends realized. He’s certain someone squealed to Sergeant Kent, and when he learns who it was the lethal young man is ready to make them pay for speaking with the cops with their lives.

There’s more than that going on in filmmaker Kevin McMullin’s sparse, minimalistic debut Low Tide, including the discovery of a fortune in antique gold coins by Alan and Peter as well as a potential romance for the older brother with the daughter of a

The film has a hardscrabble lived-in quality that’s entirely genuine, the story set in a late 1980s, early 1990s world that is left purposefully vague yet still comes across as impeccably authentic.

It’s the rudimentary and somewhat illdefined plot mechanics of McMullin’s script where I have a few issues. Red is menacing right from the start, his transformation into the story’s villainous heavy so forgone he never ends up being as intimidating or as scary as I am sure was intended. Additionally, Neustaedter portrays him with such snarly pugnaciousness his efforts to make the guy frightening almost come off as a

as their lookout for what promises to be their final heist of the summer season.

Things do not go as planned. Sergeant Kent (Shea Whigham) curiously shows up just as the three of them are leaving for the beach to get back in their boat so they can escape back to the marina. Chaos ensues,

It all plays like a theatrical character study of working class kids doing some pretty stupid things to pass the time, learning the repercussions of doing so are far more devastatingly long-lasting and tragic

little unintentionally humorous. Because of this Red never captured my full attention, and even when the final standoff between him and his supposed friends commenced I still had trouble caring about the outcome of it all one way or another.

Martell continues to impress, the young actor bringing a beguiling maturity to his performance that is fascinating. There’s always something going on behind Peter’s eyes, the wheels inside his head continually turning as he puts the pieces of this puzzle together and comes up with a plan that will allow them to not catch the eye of Sergeant Kent and at the same time keeps them out of Red’s lethal crosshairs. Johnson is also quite good, and I adored many of the scenes he and the beguiling Froseth shared together. The two have a heartbreaking moment where Alan realizes he must say the worst possible things to Mary to keep her off of Red’s radar, the painful selflessness of this act having emotionally crushing repercussions for both youngsters I’m not sure I anticipated.

McMullin also does a nice job setting a mood and sticking to it. As already stated, this small coastal town New Jersey aesthetic is always authentic. From the moment the film started I wholeheartedly believed in this world the boys, Sergeant Kent and all the other characters were living in, Chris Potter’s strong production design, Jessica Ray Harrison’s pleasingly understated costumes and Andrew Ellmaker’s soothingly somber cinematography going a heck of a long way to help with that. I also felt like the director had a firm handle on the best ways to ratchet up tension, his steady, unhurried pacing of the story close to perfect.

Even with my reservations, and even though I felt like things could have been developed a bit more fully and that Red wasn’t nearly as convincing a baddie as the material required for him to pack a memorably powerful wallop, all-in-all I still found plenty to like about what McMullin does here. Low Tide did just enough to keep me wanting to know what was going to happen next and to find out whether or not brothers Alan and Peter would be able to keep from drowning in the tumultuous sea of bad decisions they were swimming in. If not a great movie, it’s just good enough to make me curious to see what the filmmaker has up his sleeve next. More importantly, it helps make his thoughtfully meditative debut worthy of a look.

Doc Wrinkles the Clown a suitably malevolent bag of tricks

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer WRINKLES THE CLOWN Now playing There is something inherently intriguing (and undeniably unsettling) about the phenomenon Michael Beach Nichols’ documentary Wrinkles the Clown attempts to explore. The legend of Wrinkles got its start with the posting of a grainy, Paranormal Activity-like video on YouTube that featured a sinister clown climbing out from inside a drawer underneath a sleeping girl’s bed. It instantly went viral, and soon more short videos began to appear of Wrinkles at various Florida locations scaring children (mostly just by standing perfectly still) along with a phone number so parents could engage him for his “behavioral services” in regards to their misbehaving kids.

Why do parents call the Wrinkles’ phone number to scare their children? Why did his videos cause such a viral sensation?

What’s the line between child abuse and proper parental punishment for misbehavior? Who is this clown? Is he serious? Or was this whole thing some sort of public

performance art to see how modern urban legends are created and to see what sort of effect they might have on society? What happens next and where does Wrinkles go from here? Is this onslaught of creepy, terrifying clowns in public spaces his fault? Or is it all part of a historical trend that loves to paint clowns as ominous and deadly and not the selfless jokey tricksters who only want to make people laugh?

These are a handful of the many questions I had while watching Nichols’ film.

But as frequently entertaining as his mercifully brief documentary might be, I can’t say the filmmaker goes a long way toward answering any of them. He brings many of them up. He puts several of them front and center for the audience to observe and potentially dissect. Nichols even manages to interview a few children (and their parents) who have come to idolize and become obsessed with Wrinkles, showing how their starstruck worship can both positively and negatively affect their lives.

But the movie seems more interested in celebrating the mystique of this clown than it is in analyzing the myriad of topics his cultlike status has generated. It just adds to his unnerving myth more than it does anything

else to look beyond the mask and see what makes this spooky clown tick, and as such the overall film is never as interesting or as thought-provoking as it potentially could have been. Nichols appears to be content to toy with the audience in almost the same way as his purported subject has been doing in his online viral videos. A little over halfway through the director reveals what’s been really going on but not nearly as cleverly or as shockingly as I feel was likely his intention. Things tend to feel a little bit cheap and purposefully sensationalistic. While I loved getting insight into how those Wrinkles videos were created, the satisfaction I got there was frustratingly brief and only made me long to know more about the guy under the mask and less about the technical and creative tomfoolery involved in the producing of his YouTube shorts.

Don’t get me wrong. Wrinkles the Clown is incredibly entertaining at times, especially during its first half when it’s following around a shady older gentleman with a long white beard who we only see in extreme closeup channeling his inner Chris Farley by apparently living in a van down by the river. The movie is undeniably tense, Nichols showcasing a terrific ability to gen-

erate tension and suspense, which is saying something considering this is a documentary. The interview snippets with the kids who idolize and obsess about Wrinkles are close to great, some of those even more upsettingly chilling than the fuzzy viral videos that made the clown famous in the first place.

Is it enough? I can’t say I have an answer to that question. I wanted Nichols to explore his topics and not just toy with the audience, and I can’t say I walked away feeling like I learned anything interesting about how things go viral, the lengths parents will go to punish unruly children or society’s undying fascination with scary clowns. But if I judge the movie on what it is and not what I wanted it to be, I just as succinctly cannot say I didn’t enjoy seeing how everything played itself out. While not a great documentary, that doesn’t mean it was any less fun to watch, and even with a clown car full of reservations this is still a suitably ghoulish bag of malevolent tricks I’m happy I took the time to open up and see for myself what was lurking inside. Nichols knew how to hold my attention, Wrinkles the Clown a celebration of petrifying delights that had my guts twisted into unbreakable knots.
