SOVEREIGN: A BLACK QUEER ONE-WOMYN SHOW FESTIVAL 18TH & UNION ART SPACE January 7 & 9-12 Earth Pearl Collective presents their second annual black queer one-womyn show festival, Sovereign, at 18th & Union Art Space (18th Ave. & E Union St.) January 9-12. There will be three different programs rotating throughout the festival with an opportunity to view all shows back-to-back Saturday, January 12. This year’s lineup features D.C.-based

poet and vocalist, Patience Sings, from the peace and body-roll duo BOOM-scat. Her soulful tones will introduce you to the beauty of grief in her solo Seattle debut of “Good Grief.” Local favorites will include Gregory Award Winner for Best Actress in a play, Aishe` Keita, with her new one womyn show “Griot,” which opens the festival on Wednesday January 9 at 7:30pm. Aviona Rodriguez Brown is also premiering a brand new work celebrating and dissecting the intersections of being a “mixed race” Afro-Latina in her autobiographical piece, “Aviona.” Naa Akua, began warming hearts in the theatre scene

Tasveer is pleased to announce the inaugural Tasveer South Asian Literary Festival or LitFest (TSAL), also known as Tasveer Reads. The festival is FREE and will be held January 11-20 at three main venues: Richard Hugo House (1634 11th Ave.), Seattle Art Museum (1300 1st Ave.) and Elliott Bay Book Company (1521 10th Ave.). Tasveer is well known in the Pacific Northwest for its popular annual film festival, the nation’s largest South Asian film festival. With the addition of TSAL, Tasveer is expanding into serving the literary interests of the Seattle community.

The inaugural TSAL will present award-winning local and visiting authors and feature a diverse and novel blend of storytelling, poetry events, literary panels on LGBTQ writings and post-colonial fiction, and readings pertaining to the South Asian diaspora in the U.S. “We strongly believe in the power of literature to draw people together and promote cultural understanding.
