LOS ANGELES [January 22, 2019] – GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, today applauded LGBTQ-inclusive and out nominees for the 91st Academy Awards.

GLAAD, which counts the number of LGBTQ characters in releases from the

seven largest film studios in its annual Studio Responsibility Index, also spotlighted a record number of LGBTQ-inclusive films nominated for Best Picture.

Celebrating 45 Years!

Alonzo King Lines Ballet’s “Figures of Speech” a poignant reflection on endangered languages

by Sharon Cumberland SGN A&E Writer UW WORLD DANCE “FIGURES OF SPEECH” ALONZO KING LINES BALLET MEANY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS January 10 In this fascinating dance program the Alonzo King Lines Ballet company performed twenty short dances to the recorded sounds of dying, endangered, or extinct languages, such as Ainu from Kuril and Tsishima Islands, Mountain Maidu from the Sierra Mountains, Sámi from Northern Scandinavia, and Ladino from Jerusalem.

Also included were Native American languages: Cheyenne, Comanche, and Kiowa.

The healthiest, least endangered languages included were those with provincial status: Euskera from the Basque countries and Hawai’ian from the Aloha state.

The audience was given three ways of encountering these languages. A projection on the back scrim showed a white line on a black background that would take the shape of the written or phonetic representation of the language moving in a single line that – sadly, effectively – was swallowed up by a moving cloud behind it, as though the language itself were being eaten alive. At the same time we heard recordings of the language being voiced, either by a living speaker or in scratchy archival recordings of last speakers. The dancers themselves enacted a kind of translation of these languages – not literally, I suspect, but emotively – as though the language could feel itself weakening and dying.

A lone woman opened the concert to the sounds of Ainu, which has only ten native speakers on Kuril and Tsishima Islands and an ethnic population (presumably living elsewhere) of 15,000. She entered the stage dancing what was clearly a lonely, anguished expression of loss that wove beautifully with the recording that the audience could not understand. The effect was profound: No one can understand me, and when I die, no one will understand the voice of my ancestors. Of course, this is not strictly true because if there were not linguistic anthropologists working to preserve and understand dying languages we wouldn’t have this much.

Happily, some languages can be revived and reclaimed by L2 speakers. As the program explained, L1 are native speakers, and

L2 are speakers who are not native but who speak in the locale of the language. The best example of a recovered language is Hawai’ian, which is the official language of the state (the only state that has an official language) and which is a required subject in the schools. Euskera is the most robust with an ethnic population of over two million and never needed to be reclaimed. Its endangerment, however, is from being overwhelmed by French and Spanish in its traditional territories. At a conference in Barcelona some years ago I listened to impassioned appeals by Basque-speakers for the preservation of its culture and languages – and noticed that all the street signs are in both Spanish and Euskera. Using dance to evoke the dilemma of language preservationists while making music of the words themselves is a brilliant idea. The twenty short dances in this program – solos, trios, small groups and the full company of eleven dancers – expressed the emotions surrounding the pride and anxiety of cultures losing their connection to their own pasts as their languages languish. The feeling is a bit like (if I may make a local com-

parison to another phenomenon of vanishment) seeing Old Seattle disappear inexorably under a forest of cranes and high-rises.

That sinking, confused feeling some of us get trying to find our way around when our old landmarks are gone – the homes of our memories – is something akin to the feelings evoked in this program.

The dances themselves were flowing and energetic, performed by beautifully powerful men and women of great diversity, which underscores the universality of the language groups represented and those not represented but still doomed. Linguists believe that 6,000 to 7,000 endangered languages will be extinct by the year 2100, so Alonzo King and company have foregrounded an important and melancholy problem. It was wise to choreograph languages that have managed to survive, along with those that may yet have a chance, so that the loss of so much human culture would not produce a hopeless sense of human extinction.

The program asks, but can’t really answer, a serious question: How will the loss of these languages affect humanity and the memory of human wisdom and accom-

plishment? In ballet terms, there is another question that occurred to me: How can so many languages be represented by a single dance language – the dialect, if you will, of a single choreographer? In the best of all possible worlds, this project would belong to twenty choreographers, each one taking a language and presenting it in their own very different movements. Then we could begin to see in dance the difference and diversity of these cultures. As it was, the dances were thoughtful, full-bodied, powerful, and committed. King uses wide stances low to the ground, engaged facial expressions and intricate group movements. Taken together with the languages flowing around them, the twenty dances were moving and effective.

Still, one language is hard put to express a variety of languages, but instead can only express the complexity of a culture and the sorrow of losing its language. After a while, the voices of the already-lost languages became the most poignant element of the dance – the old women with their shaky chanting telling us about lives and legends we can no longer understand.

WHIM W'HIM continued from cover

many companies will present an evening of commissioned works in a season of revivals and classics, Whim W’Him presents only new works in all of its annual programs.

This extraordinary commitment to the creativity of artists – both dancers and dancemakers – is like a fertile field with a varied and fascinating array of crops. The company is small – seven talented dancers who work together for an impressive thirty-five weeks a year, many of whom have worked with each other over the ten years of the company’s existence. Compared to companies that create works for larger forces, Whim W’Him’s size is ideal for the demands of a dozen or so new works per year.

The first program every season is the “Choreographic Shindig,” which invites as many as eight emerging choreographers – chosen by the dancers themselves – to create new works. The second program is generally given over to more established choreographers as Whim W’Him’s reputation and resources increase with each passing year. The third event is generally a full-length work by Olivier Wevers, involving other artists, such as the Skyros Quartet and The Esoterics choral group in his wonderful setting of the poems of Cavafy in last year’s “Approaching Ecstasy,” or in the upcoming “Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater” in conjunction with Early Music Seattle.

The current “3 x 3” program showcases two very celebrated choreographers – Yin Yue from China and NYC, and Seattle’s own Zoe Scofield – as well as Olivier Wevers, whose choreographic duties this year, including his current work in “3 x 3”, “Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater” in February and the full-length “The Little Prince” this coming June, seems to mark a new level of creative output. Here are the “3 x 3” dances in the order they were performed:

“The Most Elusive Hold” (New Creation) Choreography: Yin Yue I’ve never seen a work by Yin Yue before, but I’ll be on the lookout for her in the future after seeing this terrific dance.

The work is clean, geometric, exciting, and complex. Five dancers in street clothes move to a variety of pulsing sounds by Emptyset, Shifted, Machinefabriek and others, creating an endless kaleidoscope of movement while somehow preserving the individual containment of each dancer.

I was reminded of DaVinci’s Vitruvian Man – that double image of a nude with arms outstretched within a square embedded in a circle – showing the perfection of human proportions while forever enclosing the individual in a perfect sphere. No matter how much the dancers combined and re-combined themselves, or flung out their arms, legs, toes, it was as if they were moving within individual spheres as a kind of hyper-individualism. I must say that this was my favorite dance of the evening – I could have watched it repeatedly and never unpacked the intricacy of its combinations, or tired of watching the dancers describe their Vetruvian circles of light.

“This mountain” (New Creation) Choreography: Zoe Scofield I last saw Zoe Scofield’s work as part of zoe | juniper’s “Clear and Sweet” at On the Boards in 2016, a memorable work inspired

by Sacred Harp singing – that strange tradition of Christian hymnody in which singers “shout” the hymns to fasola tunes. It was an unforgettable event, uniting dance and mystery with this weird old American hymn tradition. Scofield revisits the tradition in “This mountain” (“mountain” is not capitalized) by mixing the hymns with snatches of Bach’s Goldberg Variations as seven dancers emerge from behind a black partition as if dazzled by some entity situ-

ated behind the audience. They are dressed in what could be described as “praise costumes” – white garments that conjure up a choir or a group baptism. The dancers approach the mystery, tumbling the front row backwards in an endless regression before breaking into various configurations that range from folk movement to the dance equivalent of speaking in tongues. One of the most striking images was a rectangle of bright light that lay like a carpet on the stage, beckoning each dancer to enter the light as the others stood back and watched in fascination. The tension between the dark scrims and the carpet of light created a universe of exploration without a sense of threat. I love Scofield’s willingness to probe the mysteries of faith without apology – especially in an historical moment when the dire effects of immoral power are threatening our country and the world.

defined by empty shoes arranged in various patterns. In his program notes Wevers references the “65 million refugees worldwide” who “have been forcibly compelled to leave their home to escape famine, climate change, war, and persecution.” The seven dancers whose anguished, intense movements convey these losses move the shoes into new paths and shapes as the dilemma of homelessness unfolds. Shoes are the perfect, simple metaphor for both home (the shoes parked under the bed, the shoes in the closet, the shoes waiting by the door) and for the unanchored wandering of the desperate refugee (the sore feet, the worn-out soles, the endless journey, the suffering souls). Wevers’ choreographic gift is narrative in character: he is a dancemaker who uses familiar objects to tell stories, whether through images of devils, silent film stars, umbrellas and bowler hats, or shoes. Like a good poet, he calls upon our associations with concrete items to supply hints about the meaning of dance structures that might otherwise remain abstract. I love abstraction in dance, such as Yin Yue’s offering of pure movement onto which I can formulate my own ideas about

containment and proportion. But I also love the more literal revelations into the artists’ minds, especially when they address the major concerns of the audience and times.

Wevers’ powerful moral voice empowers choreography to grapple with the war between injustice and hope. As he pointed out in a post-performance discussion, the selection of choreographers for a program such as this one is governed not only by talent—and he can have his pick, since what choreographer would turn down an opportunity to make a new dance with such marvelous resources? – but also by a certain sensibility. He didn’t define that sensibility, but I think that I can: it’s an aura of realistic optimism, in which hope for humanity trumps injustice.

Marxiano Productions’ Bohemia at The Triple Door a beautiful classical work of erotic art

by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer BOHEMIA THE TRIPLE DOOR Through January 26 Last year was the triumphant debut of Bohemia at the Triple Door, a big splashy production of incredible dance numbers, glamorous costumes with an intriguing story and brought to you by Marxiano Productions, returned this past weekend.

Marxiano Productions’ triumphant production of Bohemia which debuted at The Triple Door last year returned to The Triple Door mainstage January 17 for a nine-day performance run through January 26. It’s a big splashy production with incredible dance numbers, glamorous costumes and an intriguing story that you won’t want to miss.

Bohemia is a musical set in 1890s Prague that combines stories of historic artists like Sarah Bernhardt, Frédéric Chopin and George Sand interwoven with beautiful green fairies, aerial numbers, dance, burlesque, classical piano battles, comedy, and original songs by Siano, Peachey and Dayton Allemann.

The story centers around the famous Czech composer, Antonín Dvorák (Siano), who has hit a wall prior to composing his magnum opus. In a move of desperation he turns to a bottle of absinthe for inspiration.

In this macabre and mystical dream cabaret, Dvorák is visited by the ghost of the late composer Frédéric Chopin (Peachey) and a host of scantily clad green fairies. Chopin and many other famous Bohemians guide Dvorák as they search for the true source of inspiration and grasp at artistic immortality.

Bravo to the gender-bending performance of Peachey’s Chopin dancing with his lover George (Claire Marx). Bravo as well to the closeness of the dancing between the two male fairies as performed by Hisam Goueli and Bo Mellinger. This year, Siano got to cuddle up with both Goueli and Mellinger.

I also appreciated the added humor that was absent from last year’s production.

From the staging to the classical music this production is pure art. While the sexiness of burlesque stars Goueli and Pamela Turpin (as Sarah Bernhardt) is appropriately chaste on the main stage, their dance behind the curtain allowed them to reveal themselves more explicitly and the audience was teased with erotic beauty.

Goueli also portrays Dvorák’s artistic rival, Alphonse Mucha, which clearly demonstrates Goueli is also a great actor as well as a dancer.

This classic production is everything that dinner theater is meant to be. I hope to see more shows like this at the The Triple Door.

Spanning dozens of theater companies and productions, from large and prominent to small and humble, the Gypsy Rose Lee Awards honor the excellence found in as much professional theater as we reviewers can attend in a year. Named in honor of the famed theater entrepreneur and Seattle native, Gypsy Rose Lee, and in a nod to the vast numbers or theater practitioners forced to travel the country to earn their living, the Gypsys seek to acknowledge the excellence of the Seattle theater community. Visually Elastic Moon an imaginatively self-indulgent drama

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer DON’T COME BACK FROM THE MOON Now playing There’s a lot to like about Bruce Thierry Cheung’s solo directorial debut Don’t Come Back from the Moon. A frequent James Franco collaborator (he shot The Sound and the Fury and The Adderall Diaries for the actor/producer/director and co-directed the 2018 dystopian sci-fi action film Future World with him), the veteran cinematographer’s purposefully minimalist adaptation of author Dean Bakopoulos’ novel Please Don’t Come Back from the Moon is disquieting in its hypnotically austere minimalism. Moving the action from Detroit to a windswept rundown town somewhere in the southern California desert on the Salton Sea, this is a coldly bleak story of youth searching for answers during a summer of senseless loss and abandonment, the resulting answers bracingly affecting even if they aren’t particularly surprising.

But the movie just as equally cannot help but feel a little slight, more of a visual and emotionally visceral exercise in crafting a consistent mood and setting a dynamic tone than it is anything else. With his use of expressive close-ups coupled with long expansive shots of seemingly never-ending desert vistas of a dilapidated, crumbling community on the verge of being gobbled up by the sand, the film is undeniably visually impressive. But the use of narration and chopped-up conversations that only take shape in the vaguest of ways can’t help but come across like a cinema studies major attempting to emulate Terrence Malick at his most self-indulgent. These various elements frequently feel as if they are working at cross-purposes for a great deal of the narrative, and even at a brief 82-minutes I still found sitting through Cheung’s debut without squirming a little more difficult than it arguably should have been.

There is still a lived-in quality to this tale that I cannot deny. I loved the first half hour or so, the portions where Cheung, cowriting the script with the Bakopoulos, introduces us into this world and sets up the conditions the various characters all find themselves forced to deal with. The ethereally barren strangeness of both the locale and the bizarre events are fascinating, and I loved the way the director submerged me right in the center of it all with practically no explanation whatsoever. Cheung and his cinematographer Chananun Chotrungroj utilize their poetically sparse and majestically vacant environment with mesmeric precision, the expressive, tragically persuasive charms of this introduction undeniable.

an entire community of abandoned wives and kids where all of the men for one reason or another have slowly left to explore their options elsewhere. The teenagers have labeled this as, “going to the moon,” all of them urging one another not to do the same once they’re old enough to make their own way in the world. Events are centered on 16-year-old Mickey (Jeffrey Wahlberg), his father Roman (Franco) taking time to teach him how to drive before slipping out of town himself to who knows where, leaving the teen to take care of his emotionally devastated mother Eva (an outstanding Rashida Jones) and younger brother Kolya (Zackary Arthur).

In some ways he’s better off than many of his friends, some like the lovely Sonya (Alyssa Elle Steinacker) or his volatile, bird-loving cousin Nick (Hale Lytle) left entirely on their own after their respective dads disappear.

How does the community react? The kids, especially the teenagers, find a number of varying ways to vent their anger including staying out late partying or scrounging the crumbling buildings and factories for bits of scrap metal they can trade for items like a used bicycle or a few eggs to make breakfast with. Mickey’s mom tries to fight through her own grief by opening up a makeshift barber shop in her kitchen, taking a few bucks here and there to cut the hair of the local kids or some of

the remaining adults who haven’t bolted for the great unknown. One of those individuals ends up being one of the lone males (Henry Hopper) still around who is hoping to land a job as a grocery store clerk. Much to Mickey’s frustration he ends up falling for Eva, and it’s an open question whether or not the teen is going to let their romance run its course or if he’ll do whatever he can to stop it before it can begin.

While some of that sounds relatively straightforward, in reality very little of it actually is. Cheung designs things in a way that it all ends up becoming a stream of consciousness mash-up of emotional disparities that bounce off one another as if they were a rubber ball trapped inside a hollow cube being shaken by a cantankerous child. Mikey’s voiceover tends to overexplain things, and his constant allusions to the surface of the moon can grow obnoxiously tiresome. But the openhearted clarity of the central story is refreshing, and the way the filmmaker manages to keep such precise focus on Mickey’s attempts to put all these pieces together is impressive. There is also a naturalistic grace to his growing attachment to Sonya that’s expressively rich, making her surprise decision to forgive her father (Robert Scott Crane) all the more heartbreaking because of this.

The film’s third act gets a bit jumbled.

Mickey decides to go looking for answers outside of his Salton Sea community, the discoveries he ends up making too ambiguous and vague to be as deeply moving as I think Cheung intends them to be. I also felt like, as hopeful and moderately heartwarming as the final moments might be, the last few scenes rang slightly a bit hollow as far as I was concerned. I just didn’t buy that the choices Mickey was making were wholly genuine, and while the idea that this circle of abandonment and capitulation to life’s indignities has hopefully come to an end felt sincere, it just didn’t seem to me this teenager was the one who was going to be able to accomplish such a feat with anything approaching lasting success.

Granted, having not read Bakopoulos’ book I could be reading this story’s intentions all wrong. More than that, even though Future World was something of an eye-rolling disaster, Cheung showcases a confidence with actors and an impressive imaginative flair that makes me believe this young director is a talent worth keeping an eye on. If I don’t love Don’t Come Back from the Moon that doesn’t mean I still didn’t find much to be intrigued by and bewitched with here, this visually elastic piece of a cinematic poetry a dramatic curiosity I’m happy I took the time to see.

Bohemian Rhapsody received nominations for Best Picture. Four of the eight films nominated for Best Picture are LGBTQinclusive, the highest number of LGBTQinclusive films that have ever been nominated for Best Picture in a single year. The two most recent Best Picture winners highlighted LGBTQ stories, Moonlight and The Shape of Water. GLAAD also applauded Best Picture nominations today for films Black Panther and BlacKkKlansman, which featured predominantly Black casts and stories.

If Beale Street Could Talk received a nomination in Best Adapted Screenplay for Barry Jenkins, the film was adapted from the novel of the same name by legendary gay author and activist James Baldwin.

Additional LGBTQ nominees included: • Writer Jeff Whitty, for co-writing Can You Ever Forgive Me? with Nicole Holofcener • The Live Action Short film Marguerite, which tells the LGBTQ-inclusive story of an aging woman and her nurse who develop a friendship that inspires the woman to unearth unacknowledged longing and thus help her make peace with her past.

• Documentary filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, who were nominated for their Netflix Documentary Short, End Game.

• Composer/Lyricist team Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman for Original Song for writing “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from Mary Poppins Returns.

• Shaiman was also nominated for Original Score for Mary Poppins Returns.

unveiled on Friday, January 25 live from the Sundance Film Festival. Actress Mj Rodriguez (Pose) and actor Nico Santos (Crazy Rich Asians, NBC’s “Superstore”) will host the nominee announcement via a live-stream on GLAAD’s Facebook page hosted by AT&T. GLAAD’s 2018 Studio Responsibility Index, which maps the quantity, quality, and diversity of LGBTQ people in films released by the seven largest motion picture studios and their subsidiaries during the 2017 calendar year, found an alarming drop in LGBTQ characters and representation. GLAAD found that of the 109 releases from major studios in 2017, only 14 (12.8%) of them included characters that are LGBTQ, a decrease from the previous year’s report (18.4%, 23 out of 125), and the lowest percentage of LGBTQinclusive major studio releases since

GLAAD began tracking in 2012. Not one of the 109 releases included a transgender character. GLAAD’s 2019 Studio Responsibility Index is scheduled for release later this year.

Timely Acceptable Loss an explosive misfire

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer AN ACCEPTABLE LOSS Now playing Former national security advisor Elizabeth “Libby” Lamm (Tika Sumpter) can’t forget the past. She’s haunted by her part in an aerial strike against a terrorist stronghold in the Middle East. Persuaded by then Vice President Rachel Burke (Jamie Lee Curtis) to falsify parts of a report that made this attack possible, believing that doing so will potentially end the war on terror for good, once the full ramifications of their actions are clear the growing disgust she feels begins to eat away at her soul.

While initially playing the part of a good soldier, doing what she can to help convince the American public of the legality of the administration’s actions, since then Libby has secretly written a memoir chronicling every aspect of the plan to conduct that air strike. It is a report Rachel Burke, now President of the United States, understandably does not want to become public.

Martin Salhi (Ben Tavassoli) is a promising graduate student at a prestigious New England university of Middle Eastern descent. When Libby Lamm is hired to teach one of his classes the young man is noticeably shaken. He begins to stalk his new professor, surreptitiously chronicling every step she makes. Martin has his own reasons for wanting Libby held responsible for her part in the American military’s air strike against his homeland. He’s also noticeably curious as to her recent actions that he’s been clandestinely observing, putting his original plan to hold her personally accountable for what he views as nothing short of the mass slaughter of innocent civilians on pause until he learns what is going on with the former government official and why she’s being so strangely secretive.

That’s the overly complex setup to what’s happening in writer/director Joe Chappelle’s (Phantoms) political thriller An Acceptable Loss, a well-intentioned ticking clock suspense yarn where tension is hard to come by and anything approaching an emotional investment in the outcome is practically non-

existent. Additionally, the subplot involving Martin isn’t believable, his character arc inexplicably transforming into something out of 3 Days of the Condor or The Parallax View in a manner that is forcibly nonsensical. His involvement with Libby is absurd, and as the entire last third of the story hinges entirely on the decisions he makes and very little else this is a gigantic problem the film cannot hope to recover from.

Not that the central scenario isn’t interesting. Libby’s crisis of conscience isn’t half as compelling as her back and forth discussions with Rachel also prove to be. While not exactly subtle, they have a strength and a resonance that’s fascinating. While one does hope the answer to this moralistic argument is obvious, that the viewer would never choose to unleash the level of unimaginable carnage these characters do and then face having to live with the repercussions of their actions, it’s unnerving how matter-of-factly Chappelle treats this debate. Thanks almost entirely to Curtis’ chilling, confidently high-

minded performance, Rachel’s reasoning for changing U.S. policy in regards to first strike attacks and the need for collateral damage, no matter how massive it might be, have a bone-rattling immediacy that reminded me of statements made by a number of politicians roaming the halls of Congress and residing within the White House right this very second.

It’s fairly clear what Chappelle is trying to do. He’s placing a mirror to the current political miasma and asking the viewer to question everything they think they hold dear. The filmmaker does so by taking this story to its abhorrent extremes, showing in no uncertain terms what could happen when a Presidential administration is allowed to go unchecked by the rule of law and given free rein by a Congress disinterested in conducting their oversight responsibilities. Rachel is like an amalgam of Dick Cheney, Donald Trump and Martin Sheen’s authoritarian political candidate with a backbone made out of string cheese

that the actor portrayed in David Cronenberg’s The Dead Zone, Curtis playing her character with such determined gravitas I found I couldn’t take my eyes off of her.

But so what? The thriller aspects do not work, especially once Libby and Martin stop working at cross-purposes. The entire will-it-or-won’t-it get published aspect surrounding the former’s memoir isn’t interesting. Worse, it also isn’t suspenseful.

Nothing feels real or authentic, and there was never a second I believed what was transpiring could take place in anything even passingly resembling the real world.

The last act is especially bothersome, things building to an expected conclusion that’s nowhere near as shocking as is undeniably the intent.

Sumpter was magnificent in 2016’s Southside with You, the actress a rising star I expect great things from in the future.

While she does what she can here, Libby is such a mess of a character it’s remarkable the actress makes her anywhere near as compelling as she does. But Chappelle’s writing for this smart, determined woman is all over the map, and there were many moments where her decisions made so little sense, especially as they pertained to Martin, that I might have rolled my eyes in irritated frustration on more than one occasion. Sumpter can only do so much to mitigate all of this psychologically discombobulated madness, and that Libby isn’t a total disaster as the protagonist has more to do with her talent and resolve than it does anything relating to the director’s script.

I almost feel bad for disliking An Acceptable Loss as I do. Chappelle has something to say, and I don’t think there’s any minimizing he has a point in regards just how bad it might be to put unscrupulous, race-bating fundamentalists in charge of whether or not to utilize the nuclear button. But the sermonizing is as plodding and as tiresome as the inept plotting of the suspense-thriller aspects of this tale unfortunately prove to be. For all of the film’s high-minded aspirations, it’s just too silly and stupid to be able to live up to any of them, Chappelle’s drama an explosive misfire that’s nothing short of a complete waste of time.

Nearly every night Scarecrow offers free films, lectures, and unique programming in The Screening Room. The space is also available to non-profits and community groups, all in an effort to build communities around our shared love of film. Silver Screeners – Scarecrow partners with Seattle senior and community centers to deliver film screenings and discussions for older adults who might otherwise be unable to access films from the collection.

Movies in the Park – In partnership with Magnuson Park Community Center, City of Seattle Office of Arts and Culture, and Seattle Parks and Recreation, Scare-

crow hosted free, family-friendly movie nights. Hundreds of attendees explored other cultures through four unique, familyfriendly films and children’s activities without needing to leave Seattle.

ABOUT ROBERT HORTON Robert Horton is a member of the National Society of Film Critics and the longtime film critic for the Everett Herald and Seattle Weekly. He is a regular contributor to Film Comment magazine, and the author of Frankenstein (Columbia University Press) and Billy Wilder: Interviews (U. Press of Mississippi).

He has been a Fulbright Specialist, an adjunct professor at Seattle University, the curator of the “Magic Lantern” film program at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, and a speaker with Smithsonian Journeys. His work is linked at the website The Crop Duster.

Meet Gracie, an 11-year-old grey and refined lady cat.

This mature gal loves to spend her days relaxing in sunny spots and accepting gentle head scratches as tribute.

She loves to play with feather wands and anything that moves. Gracie spent some time in foster and her foster parent said "Gracie is a sweet girl who always comes out to say hi and clearly loves having a person around to be able to give her head scratches. She is distracted easily by pets and wants to plop down by your leg and take in the world around her. She was very intent on sniffing out every single corner and would love food puzzles (with dry food!)." Meet the distinguished Gracie today at Seattle Humane, and fall in love at first purr!
