LOCAL SIGHTINGS FILM FESTIVAL NORTHWEST FILM FORUM September 21-29 Northwest Film Forum will be kicking off the 21st edition of their Local Sighting Film Festival, Seattle’s only festival dedicated to Pacific Northwest films and filmmakers: a showcase of new films from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, the Yukon and British Columbia in a few short days. Special Screening – Northwest Film Forum collaboration with Moving Image Preservation of Puget Sound For the second year in a row, Local Sightings Film Festival is collaborating with Moving Image Preservation of Puget Sound (MIPoPS) for a screening of incredible archival footage from Puget Sound history. This year, we will be presenting the films of Vi Hilbert, a member and noted elder of the Upper Skagit tribe, who played a major role in the revitalization of the language and culture of the First People of the Pacific Northwest as a teacher, storyteller, writer and filmmaker. According to her website, “Her commitment to preserving Lushootseed language and literature is largely responsible for the renaissance of interest in Lushootseed culture and the growth of tribal language programs all over Western Washington.”

Festival Workshop Highlights • THE NEW FRONTIER Screening & Writers Panel: NWFF Local Sightings Festival is proud to host filmmaker, Kanani Koster, and the writers of THE NEW FRONTIER for a public screening followed by a conversation with the diverse cast of writers behind the representation!

THE NEW FRONTIER is a short film that explores and honors people of color’s histories and contributions to our country specifically from 1860-1895 a.k.a. the Old West. By subverting tropes and reclaiming classic American iconography (i.e.

Cowboys, Soldiers, and Witches) we hope to highlight the many pieces of our history that have been left out school textbooks.

While crafting the idea our team decided that we in no way would we rely on trauma tourism (slavery, rape, genocide, ect), stereotypes/tropes (dirty banditos, the noble savage), or white saviors.

• GRRRL JUSTICE Screening & Artist Talk with Shontina Vernon: NWFF Local Sightings Festival is proud to host filmmaker, Shontina Vernon, for a public screening followed by a conversation with cast and crew members.

GRRRL JUSTICE is a short narrative film exploring the pathways of girls and queer youth of color into the juvenile justice system. It uses gender and sexuality as a framework for understanding their rising rates of incarceration. Through the lead characters in this powerful triptych, we also come to understand the power of story and the necessity of art and youth led community spaces in their healing and liberation.

Renaissance cone hats draped in neon lights – is enough to get the heart thumping. And Marymoor Park itself is so lovely, so well organized for visitors, and so dotted with beautiful, full-growth trees that you feel as though you’ve entered an enchanted village where circus royalty is surrounded by an entourage of green courtiers in conifer robes. The magic begins even as you approach the parking lot!

But this is where the romantic soundtrack stops with a screech, like a needle scraping across a vinyl record – that classic sound of something going off the expected path, and not in a good way. For though “Volta” has a lot to be excited about – and one of the best trampoline acts in the history of the world – the show in general has taken an earthbound path that trades in magic for urban angst. The enchanted village turns out to be an asphalt basketball court in a dingy city.

Great things can happen there – crazy BMX bike tricks, zippy tumbling runs, high-flying acrobatics, and (I kid you not) the best trampoline act in the history of the world. But where are the beautiful colors and the clever puppetry, the ingenious waterfalls or the fabulous costumes? Where’s the sheer astonishment we’ve come to expect from Cirque du Soleil? Where is the cheerful optimism of a “Luzia” or the ingenious machinery and fascinating narrative of “Kurios”? Not, I’m afraid, in “Volta.”

It’s an interesting idea to build a show around supposedly urban sports like doubledutch jump rope, hip-hop, BMX cycling, and tumbling, but the risk is that you can go on YouTube and see city kids doing the same things – even better, in some cases – to the same throbbing electronic music that “Volta” uses in this show. Another problem, for me at least, is that some of the sports are not urban – like Southern California’s suburban bicycle motor cross (BMX) modeled on off-road motorcycle racing – a typically white-boy sport for people whose parents can provide them with bikes to modify. And if the sport is truly urban – like double-dutch jump rope, or hip-hop street dancing –it’s the invention of black and Hispanic kids, as real urbanites know (I’m from NYC – I’ve watched black girls doing double-dutch for years). There are plenty of fine performers in “Volta,” but as good as they are, I would have appreciated seeing a team of championship black girls doing double dutch, or some black and Hispanic street dancers doing hiphop. Opportunity lost, Cirque people.

And if you have an act that you wouldn’t find in an urban setting, like a woman doing acrobatics while suspended by her hair – it may offer the spectacular weirdness we’ve come to expect from Cirque du Soleil, but it won’t fit into the urban theme of the evening. The story that is supposed to link the acts together is about Waz, the MC of “The WOW Show” – a cheezy talent contest – who wearies of his phony life and longs for authenticity. The word “volta” is meant to suggest transformation from the inauthentic by turn-

ing to the true self, which leads to freedom (the tag line of “Volta” is “Find your free.”)

Ironically, the costumes and high energy of the supposedly inauthentic “WOW Show” are a lot more fun and fabulous than the supposedly authentic parts of the show that come later. Canadian dancer Joey Arrigo, who plays Waz, has the best costume of the evening – a solid gold suit with a golden wig of flaming hair. He vamps and struts with such style that he seems to be right where he should be – in the spotlight. If Brazillian Danilla Bim, the hair suspension dancer, had appeared at this point it would have been a big WOW! not only for her mesmerizing performance but for her fabulous costume (naked skin suit with a few sparkly flowers here and there).

Later, however, after Waz changes directions with the aid of a “Free Spirit” on roller skates (…seriously? roller skates? A real urban spirit would use inline skates…) he never again returns to the fabulousness of Act I. He does a pretty terrific dance in Act II to express his sense of freedom, but nothing is quite as circus-like or exciting as “The WOW Show.” I kept waiting for Waz to transform into something thrilling – maybe like the Running Girl in “Luzia” who sprouts fabulous rainbow wings – but “Volta” is stuck in an urban universe, so what we get is BMX bikers. It doesn’t help that Waz’s early love of BMX is expressed in a flashback when his mother gives him a bike – a duet between a ballet dancer and a biker. Hey – this is Seattle, home of the Pacific Northwest Ballet. We see the best ballet in the world every season. While the Mom was a good dancer, her routine was about as interesting as a barre exercise.

And while we’re on the subject of choreography, the inauthentic world was represented by people in gray costumes called “precision walkers.” I was looking forward to this part of the show because I love unison dance – whether it’s the simultaneity of a corps de ballet or a team of street dancers who lock and pop together. Few things are as exciting as multiple dancers doing the same movement with the precision of a marching band and the complexity of great choreography. Think “Swan Lake” or hip hop crews. But sadly, all these “precision walkers” did was walk in a circle or in a block, holding up fake cell phones as though having a cell phone was inauthentic and gray-making. (I confess to a prejudice here – being from Seattle I think technology is as likely a source of authenticity and transformation as otherwise – so the premise of “Volta” was a bit off for me.)

But now for the good news – and the reason why you should go see “Volta” and decide whether I’m all wet or not. Singer and Broadway star Darius Harper escorts Waz though all his stages of change and accompanies many scenes with compelling drama and heartfelt, resonant singing.

He was so good that he often stole attention from the performers he was backing up. But for my money, the biggest reason for you to go see “Volta” is the “trampowall” – like nothing you’ve ever, ever seen before. Six trampoline artists not only perform tricks by jumping up and down in the traditional way, but they leap against and through a construction that suggests the tenements of the inner city – a wall with windows – jumping on top, through, and under, often in patterns and sequences, looking like human popcorn. This was the only performance of the evening when I dropped my notebook, forgot I was reviewing and just gaped, open mouthed, at the most astonishing and wonderful performance of skill and joie de vivre in the entire show. It’s the best trampoline act in the history of the world – and worth the price of the ticket.

I hope that in the future Cirque du Soleil will return to its successful formula – capable of multiple variations – of magic, enchantment, and wonder. We don’t come to the circus to see what we can see on the street, or on You Tube, or in a dozen different sports venues. We come to be charmed, beguiled, and astonished. “Volta” lacks charm, and astonishes only intermittently.

But it’s truly a Cirque du Soleil show, because when you are astonished – and there’s a pretty astonishing strongman/unicyclist as well – you know you could only have seen it there.

continued from cover Jessie Nelson (book), which debuted in 2015 at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, MA and moved to Broadway in 2016. Part of the particular legacy of that musical is that it was also directed and choreographed by women, making it the only Broadway musical in history to have such a plethora female energy.

It’s essentially billed as a comedy, but there are a lot of dark parts to it, as well.

Though Jenna, the waitress, and Earl, her ne’er-do-well husband are said to have begun their relationship as teenagers, Earl has clearly become more dangerous and abusive. The musical also makes it clear that Jenna’s mother and father were immersed in an abusive situation that hits at the heart.

A main plot point has to do with infidelity, though everyone who engages in that seems to have “good reasons” for doing so.

The musical seems to track very closely to the movie. Because the characters are “flawed,” it’s supposed to make the audience appreciate that people make mistakes in life and life is a struggle to get right.

There are definitely some very fun aspects to the musical, especially the characters of Dawn (here played by Lenne Klingaman) and Ogie or “OKC with a bullet” (here played by Jeremy Morse). In fact, the choreography for Morse’s intro song, “Never Ever Getting Rid of Me,” is laugh out loud funny – with some simply amazing gymnastic dance moves that Morse nails perfectly! What’s more, that song picks up a somewhat slow-to-develop first act and suddenly makes the whole show more worthwhile. Dawn and Ogie are the odd, awkward people who have such a hard time finding love – until they meet their perfectly odd match.

The basic story is that pregnant Jenna (here played by powerhouse singer Desi Oakley) bakes pies for her local breakfast spot and has developed that skill into such mouthwatering goodness that she’s encouraged to enter a pie-making contest by the curmudgeonly shop owner, Joe (a good-hearted Larry Marshall). Enticed by the prize money, Jenna dreams of leaving her husband.

Complication ensues when she entangles herself with her new obstetrician (Bryan Fenkart), who is married as well. We certainly understand why Jenna would be so impulsive, but we really are not given much information to explain the doctor. Fenkart plays “hapless” fairly well, but has little chemistry with Oakley and is underwhelming as a tour lead, particularly vocally.

Besides waitress Dawn, Jenna also has waitress Becky (power-voiced Charity Angel Dawson) to support her. A lovely aspect of the show is that real dough is kneaded on stage, and there is a sense of real baking taking place.

The national tour is here through Sunday. The difficulty of such an intimate show being done in such a large tour-hosting theater is that sometimes a show has difficulty matching the space. The adroitly changing

over your plot line? It’s actually not all that uncommon. That’s what happens to Pablo and Tania del Valle in Karen Zacarias’ play, Native Gardens.

You can see how they handle their dilemma in Intiman’s smart, funny production housed at the Jones Playhouse. The crackerjack cast of Phillip Ray Guevara as Pablo, Sophie Franco as Tania, Julie Briskman as Virginia and Jim Gall as Frank (with some help from Gloria Alcala and Yolanda Suarez) handle all the angst and banter with perfect comic timing.

Virginia and Frank are the older, white couple next door and Frank is a gardening enthusiast from the old school: Miracle Gro and pesticides. Tania’s family is a farming

set swings the small folk-rock band on and off stage, using the musicians as part of the scenery and ambiance to lovely effect. But in a smaller Broadway theater, apparently the audience can smell real pies baking – something the Paramount can’t possibly match.

At almost two and a half hours, the musical is a bit too long, with a few too many slow, sad songs. It definitely picks up and is more engaging when it comes to some of the funny

songs and lighter moments. However balladic, Bareilles’ songs are generally accessible, musically, which is good. I wish there were something a little more ear-wormy to catch onto and sing on the way home.

The feel-good ending has Jenna taking control of her life more significantly, perhaps as an example to women stuck in similar situations all across the country.

Unfortunately, those women are probably

not going to see a Broadway show to give them hope. Maybe they can see the movie.

family and she’s a naturist to boot, so she’d like to update her yard with native plants (read: weeds) to bring the butterflies and insects for the birds! Clash of gardening, values, esthetics, backgrounds, just about every clash you can think of.

Every character here is smart and generally caring. Each character has a point of view you may well understand, even if you don’t agree with it. The white couple is clearly “woke” – sometimes! At least they think they try to be, but…. Well, we find out where they fall off the cliff of white privilege.

The Latinx couple is a budding power couple, with Pablo being a rising star at his law firm and Tania working on her PhD dissertation, and being very pregnant. They also run into the edges of their own tolerance for interference with their rights or their neighborliness.

Of course, they’re all propelled into an

immediate problem because Pablo has suddenly invited his whole new law firm over to the house and in order to make a good impression, the couple has got to do something with their disreputable back yard. But they figure out a plan that can be done in six days. Except, the next door neighbor is competing in a neighborhood “beautiful garden” contest he’s determined to win.

Can’t they all just get along? Maybe not.

Directed by Arlene Martinez-Vasquez, the production immediately grabs us with a set that instantly describes the situation without saying a word (by designer Lex Marcos) and some very funny stage business by Gall with ear phones and pesticide spray hopping around the yard. Adept lighting by Robert J. Aguilar sets times of day and a lively sound design by Matt Starritt makes the audience want to dance with the garden crew.

It’s not world war or famine or disease, but small human problems like neighbor issues are ones we can all identify with and put ourselves right into every pair of shoes on stage. The changing dynamics and reasons for why each character does what they do is very, very human. And for the most part, also very, very funny. It also smartly explores culture clashes and majority/ minority politics in a pretty safe, but determined way. I think you’ll like it a lot!

Sam Smith concert a dazzling thrill ride

by Paul Torres SGN Contributing Writer SAM SMITH THE THRILL OF IT ALL TOUR KEY ARENA September 8 Sam Smith thrilled a Key Arena audience on Saturday September 8. He promised a lot of fun and that everyone would leave his show in a better mood, although he hilariously admitted his music is a bit depressing.

He’s not only self-effacing, he is charming, too. He is out supporting his second album The Thrill of It All released in 2017.

The mood was set with quotes on the large screens above the stage that included writers Michael Cunningham, Mfaniso Udofia and Canadian poet Rupi Kaur with her following inscription: but what is stronger/than the human heart/that shatters over and over/ and lives. Kaur’s exquisite quote not only describes Smith’s current well-noted private life, but the emotions of his music. However, this despair becomes his muse and for this night he let it ride. The night belonged to Smith and his adoring fans.

The stretched-out pyramid shaped stage opened in the middle and Smith rose up and the opening notes of “Burning” sparkled out. The English crooner was absolutely beaming with assistance from the excellent lighting. The stage was enhanced by mystical billows of smoke that changed colors with the rhythms and beats of Smith’s soulyearning tunes like “I’m Not the Only One” and “I Sing Because I’m Happy.”

Smith’s expressive genderfluid vocal delivery is amazing live especially with his rousing renditions of “I’ve Told You Now” and “Baby, You Make Me Crazy.” The powerful build-up of “Lay Me Down” had fans in tears. His vocals flowed beautifully and left the audience enraptured. It’s pure sexy, fan-screaming pop music. This music transcends genders.

At the highpoint of the show, Smith talked about acceptance and declared himself “a proud gay man” and performed “HIM” as rainbow colors lit the smoke at the end of the stage. His proud queer stance is exhilarating to see from a renowned international musical star like Sam Smith. “Love is love,” he exclaimed. The diverse audience was awestruck. Even a security guard commented on how charming and cute he is.

Hits covered included “Latch,” “Money on My Mind,” “Too Good at Goodbyes,” the Grammy winning “Stay with Me,” and the Academy Award winning “Writing’s on the Wall” from James Bond 007: Spectre.

The big songs never fail to bring down the house. The audience knew every word as was evident from the cheerful fans singing all around me who, at times, drowned out the singer himself.

Smith’s rip-torn-from-the-heart-andworn-on-his-sleeve lyrics were a celebration of the dynamic contrasts of human emotions that run the gamut that are especially felt in these turbulent days here in the United States. This was especially true with “Palace” which was sung atop a golden spiral staircase. The audience came to weep, cheer, sing along, and to have a good time before heading home. His energetic and stylish band and back-up singers revved it up and added panache to the show. If music can do this, as it should, then Smith’s mission was firmly accomplished.

From sad heartbreaks to excited heartbeats, Smith’s golden voice offered wave after wave of sheer joy. Even the arena’s echo acoustics couldn’t hamper this knockout of a concert. He made sure to cover every corner of the pyramid-shaped stage to wave “hello” to his fans. Sam Smith’s show was unforgettable from lights up to lights down. His charisma and amazing vocals stirred the audience and made the night fun and made for a stellar show.

High as Hope: Florence + the Machine, St. Vincent, Lizzo conquer Key Arena

by Jessica Price SGN A&E Writer FLORENCE + THE MACHINE HIGH AS HOPE TOUR KEY ARENA September 10 After a few festival appearances in the US this summer, Florence + the Machine’s 19 city High as Hope Tour began in Seattle Monday evening, bringing two heavy-hitting opening acts along with her. Handpicked by Florence herself, Minneapolis rapper/singer and all-around babe Lizzo took the stage at 7pm, hot on the heels of a string of extremely catchy singles. Lizzo’s body-positive message and upbeat, genrehopping dance music are an undeniable good time, not to mention her trademark twerking.

Early arrivals and a sizeable gathering of Lizzo fans were treated to “Worship,” “Phone,” and “Scuse Me.” Flanked by two dancers and a DJ, Lizzo effortlessly filled Key Arena with the full power of her vocals.

New single “Boys” was followed by “Jerome Go Home” (with an introductory snippet of TLC’s “No Scrubs” thrown in for good measure). It was clear that Lizzo and her girls were reveling in the first night of their very first arena tour, at one point requesting the now well-populated arena to light up all their cell phones; at another, prompting the crowd to do the wave. The excitement was infectious. A shout out to Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” preceded “Water Me” and “Good as Hell.” Lizzo is a powerhouse, her voice slipping easily from rap to retro soul in the span of one song. She won’t be opening arena shows for very long.

Next up was St. Vincent, looking slightly otherworldly in an emerald green vinyl jumpsuit and sparkling gold booties, her hair styled in a jet-black bob. She stood apart from her band, who performed in a line just behind her: one vinyl-clad beauty and two men in featureless face masks with unat-

tractive blond blunt cut wigs obscuring their eyes. Their menacing, futuristic electro-pop was a change of direction, but the combination of stark beats and haunting vocals St. Vincent is known for held Key Arena in thrall. “Sugarboy,” “Los Ageless,” “Masseduction,” “Savior” and “Cheerleader” from

breakthrough album Strange Mercy were highlights, the drop-dead gorgeous “New York” closed the set on a high. Frightening/ dazzling isn’t a bad way to push boundaries in an arena, and St. Vincent delivered.

Florence + The Machine took the stage at 9:15pm, singer Florence Welch a vision

of wild, pastoral femininity in a gossamer dress of pleats and ruffles that seemed to float over a minimal bodysuit as she bounded across the stage. Beginning with “June” and “Hunger” from their fourth and current studio album, High as Hope, Welch, now 31, barely stood still for an hour and a half – bounding, skipping, twirling as if she were a more accessible Kate Bush.

Welch has been in a reflective mood, the new album thoughtfully contemplating the aftermath of love lost and the perspective of outgrowing your wild years. Older songs “Between Two Lungs,” “Only If for a Night” and “Queen of Peace” showed off the 7-piece band’s percussive power and the incredible energy Welch is known for.

As always, she wore no shoes, effortlessly belting at the top of her voice while sprinting from stage left to right and back again.

Welch exudes an unselfconscious, liberating zeal that creates intimacy even in a venue as cavernous as Key Arena.

Introducing “Patricia,” Welch explained that the song was inspired by Patti Smith, who told her that every time she performed it Patti’s spirit would be with her. “Now she’s here with all of us,” she said. Though many were probably too young to recognize the name, it felt as though her rabid fans would be more than willing to do their homework. “Dog Days Are Over,” “100 Years,” and “Ship to Wreck” were followed by “The End of Love,” “Cosmic Love” and “Delilah.” Closing the set with “What Kind of Man,” Welch padded off and quickly reappeared for a thunderous encore of “Big God” and “Shake It Out.” During the latter, the singer ran along the sides of the arena floor all the way to the opposite end and half way up the lower level, pausing at intervals to sing and dance with particularly enthusiastic fans. Though much of High as Hope is more polished and refined than her earlier material, Welch’s true talent is in her vitality and rawness: sharing her own journey of self-discovery and recognizing that it is in fact universal.

Celebrating 44 Years!

Inventive Simple Favor an elegantly vulgar comedic mystery

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer A SIMPLE FAVOR Now playing Emily Nelson (Blake Lively) has disappeared. The stylish and opinionated wife and mother asked her friend Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) to pick up her son Nicky (Ian Ho) from school five days ago only to never be seen again. Emily’s husband Sean (Henry Golding), in London at the time of her disappearance, is understandably worried, and while his wife has vanished in the past, she’s never done so quite like this. As she considers Emily to be her best friend, and because her son Miles (Joshua Satine) has become a close buddy of Nicky’s, Stephanie is determined to find out what happened, and in the process uncovers a surrealistic mystery of false identities, familial tragedy and outright psychological manipulation that’s unfathomable in its cryptically ambiguous enormity.

Based on the best-selling novel by Darcey Bell and featuring a crackerjack script by Jessica Sharzer (Nerve) and exquisitely dexterous direction by Paul Fieg (Ghostbusters, Bridesmaids), A Simple Favor is unquestionably one of 2018’s most adventurously inventive surprises. A combination of a fiercely dark comedy, a labyrinthine psychological thriller and marvelously feminine character study analyzing friendship, parenthood, romance, sibling rivalries and heartrending grief in the wake of profound tragedy, this movie is a pure joy first frame to last. More importantly, it features a pair of performances from Kendrick and Lively that are both outstanding, the former in particular delivering an awardworthy turn of mesmerizing eloquence that had me wanting to give her a standing ovation as soon as the film came to an end.

director, it’s still surprising just how consistently funny this effort ends up proving to be. This is like some Agatha Christie mystery crossed with “Leave It to Beaver,” Gone Girl, Leave Her to Heaven, The Trouble with Harry and an old school Billy Wilder comedy like The Apartment or Some Like It Hot. It’s both vulgar and innocent at the same time, Stephanie’s plucky goody-two-shoes demeanor and Emily’s acerbic, foul-mouthed feminism cooking up a spicy gazpacho that’s as icy cold as it is agreeably tasty.

The jokes come fast and furious but almost all of them still feel organic to the material, to the characters and to the world they all inhabit. Fieg juggles things with a determined rambunctiousness that’s one part “Scooby-Doo,” one part “Murder She Wrote” and one additional part Laura, the director bringing an elegant old Hollywood gravitas to the proceedings while never undercutting the more playfully juvenile elements that make the film so much fun.

Along with Game Night, this is one of the more anachronistic, imaginative and wholly original comedies to come down the pike in

ages, watching it a merrily vulgar breath of fresh air I absolutely adored.

Lively is in full Gene Tierney mode and she’s wonderful. Filling costume designer Renee Ehrlich Kalfus’ (Hidden Figures) heavenly collection of pantsuits, leisurewear and other assorted designs to perfection, the actress paints a portrait of stylishly snobbish contempt that’s intoxicating. And yet, Lively takes things even further, her jolly wide-eyed astonishment as Emily warms to Stephanie’s quirky charms coming to life with an electric vibrancy that held me happily spellbound. It’s arguably the best performance of The Shallows and The Age of Adaline actress’ career, her feisty femme fatale a worthy addition to the film noir canon.

But as terrific as she is, and Lively is magnificent, the real star of the show is Kendrick. Sitting alongside Charlize Theron in Tully, Matilda Lutz in Revenge and Chloë Grace Moretz in The Miseducation of Cameron Post, her performance as Stephanie is one of my favorites of 2018.

Kendrick hides a marvelous sea of hurt and intelligence behind her beatific bub-

bly façade, the pain of past regrets and years of blaming herself for unimaginable heartbreak coming to the surface with sublime naturalistic refinement. Her unique physicality, the way she commits herself to Stephanie’s transformative journey, her gonzo gusto as she does the unthinkable and finds a variety of ways to solve a myriad of mysteries while also healing her own fractured psyche, it’s all glorious. Kendrick excels in ways that boggled my mind, and whether chatting about making friendship bracelets on her character’s vlog or gently coercing a boozing alcoholic to reveal long-held family secrets in order to bring a semblance of light into a world smothered in darkness the actress does no wrong.

There are times when the overt silliness and pithy one-liners grow tiresome, and if not for the fact Fieg and Sharzer pay off their running gags involving a trio of snootily judgmental parents with a dazzling climactic joke I’m pretty certain I could have done without their observational Greek Chorus nonsense. Also, as charismatic as he might be, Crazy Rich Asians heartthrob Golding never gets the chance to develop his character as fully as his costars do, Sean not all that much more than a pretty face sporting an undeniably sexy accent.

But who am I kidding? I’m absolutely head over heels for this little gem of a motion picture. Great mystery. Interesting characters. Sidesplitting comedy. If I could program this movie as a double bill with the equally entertaining Game Night I’d do so right this very second. More than that, I just hope people don’t let the ambiguous and purposefully sparse marketing for A Simple Favor dissuade them from giving it a look.

Fieg’s film is one of the most thrillingly unique comedic undertakings of this or any other year, and as such I plan to head back to the theatre to watch it again for a second time relatively soon.

Black’s The Predator a violently comedic disappointment

Over 30 years ago a dense Central American forest was visited by a new kind of interstellar hunter, this creature tearing apart an elite mercenary unit and a hardened CIA operative as if they were butter until their leader, the lone survivor of the assault, beat this killer at its own game. Not too long afterwards, another one of these alien sportsmen came calling, this time heading to a gangridden Los Angeles in order to stalk members of a vaunted LAPD assault team, their determined commander ending this being’s hunt before it could collect its final two trophies.

In Mexico, decorated sniper Quinn McKenna (Boyd Holbrook) has a run-in with one of these alien visitors, absconding with its headgear and one of its gauntlets as he tries to make his way back to the United States. Mailing these items to his wife Emily (Yvonne Strahovski) and autistic son Rory

(Jacob Tremblay) before being taken into custody, it turns out this particular Predator isn’t visiting Earth to hunt, those stolen artifacts having surprising value to the creature. With a clandestine government operative (Sterling K. Brown) looking to shut him up permanently, McKenna teams up with evolutionary biologist Dr. Casey Brackett (Olivia Munn) and a ragtag group of psychologically unbalanced military prisoners (Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, Augusto Aguilera) all suffering from PTSD and affectionately dubbed “The Loonies” in order to protect his son, never imagining that by doing so the fate of the entire planet might be falling into their lethal hands in the process.

Picking up after the events of 1987’s Predator, 1990’s Predator 2 and 2010’s Predators, director and co-writer Shane Black’s (who starred in the original as the ill-fated communications officer Hawkins) The Predator is a perplexing misfire.

Funny, well cast, featuring a couple of strong, imaginative moments that are suitably thrilling, this sequel is nonetheless a convoluted, haphazardly plotted mess that grows more tiresome and visually chaotic as it moves towards its frenetic and rushed conclusion. Black and co-writer Fred Dekker (Night of the Creeps) put so much emphasis on the comedy and so little on the actual story it is almost as if the pair made their narrative up as shooting progressed.

This last third is particularly frustrating, and as good as the likes of Holbrook, Tremblay, Brown, Munn, Rhodes, Key and Jane might be, to say I could have cared less if any of them lived or died wouldn’t be too far from the truth.

If that sounds harsh that’s by design.

Casting controversies aside, which I’m not going to go into detail here (which are

admittedly still head-scratching in their stupidity considering this film’s plot; kudos to Munn for standing up and saying what needed to be said and forcing the studio to do the right thing), but this sequel’s problems are legion. As good as a lot of the jokes Black and Dekker have dreamt up, and as terrific as the cast might be at delivering most of them, the central crux driving the plot forward is, to put it bluntly, stupid. The reasons the Predators have been coming to Earth to hunt, what they have planned for our planet, it’s just silly, and once the truth is revealed it’s possible I audibly sighed in flabbergasted disappointment.

Then there are the action sequences.

Where Black has shown himself to be a consummate craftsman in the past with his handling of Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Iron Man 3 and The Nice Guys, here things are edited so frenetically keeping visual track of what is happening, especially during the climactic home stretch, is impossible.

It’s chaos apparently for the sake of chaos.

Characters go this way and that. A massive Predator transforms into an interstellar cross of Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, John Rambo, the Black Panther and that preacher werewolf hunting country redneck rubes in the fog in 1985’s Silver Bullet.

One of the film’s principals is dispatched with such careless indifference it likely would have had more of a visceral impact had Black just staged the moment offscreen and been done with it. The ending is a nonsensical jumble that makes jokes out of its heroes and a buffoon out of its supposedly unstoppable titular character. As for the risible epilogue featuring CGI visual effects straight out of a video game circa 1995, the less said about that misbegotten moment the better.

Black’s film is funny, there’s no denying

that. This cast of irregular regulars is having an obvious blast as they learn to work together to battle this supposedly unstoppable force while also rediscovering their heroic tendencies that made them great soldiers before calamity sent them all spiraling into psychological despair. The relationship between Jane and Key is particularly affecting, and their final moment together, one that should have been nothing short of terrible considering the way in which it is showcased and staged, still has an undeniable emotional component that took me by surprise. The two actors craft a purely human moment inside all of this violently comic mayhem that’s extraordinary, and if the film had done a better job of balancing its humor, action and horror in the same manner this scene does then it’s likely I’d have responded to it with a bit more positivity.

Sadly, this isn’t the case. While John McTiernan’s original Predator remains one of the great action-horror hybrids of the 1980s (and maybe of all-time), Black’s The Predator proves to be a facile and misguided continuation that can’t help but pale in comparison. Heck, even if the comedy component is rather nice I must admit I actually enjoy Stephen Hopkins’ Predator 2 more than I do this tired bit of unfocused pandemonium, and other than Danny Glover and a kick-butt climax I don’t really like that first sequel all that much. (In the spirit of full transparency, I do enjoy Nimród Antal’s Predators quite a bit, and feel it has only gotten better over time.) I’m really not sure what Black was trying to do here, where he and Dekker imagined things were going to go next. All I do know is that this sequel might be one of the more stupefying and frustrating disappointments of 2018, and a big part of me kind of wishes I hadn’t watched it in the first place.
