Ever since I was 14 years old, I wanted to be Simon Le Bon. Some would say the same about bass guitarist, John Taylor (the cutest), or keyboardist, Nick Rhodes (super-androgynous). But with Simon, he had great hair, clothes and voice.

He’s actually brought a guest, a beautiful amphibian research biologist named Alice (Rachel Weisz), her myriad of crazy stories fascinating everyone sitting at the table.

But as astonishing as these worldly tales of wonder might be, Tom is intrigued for reasons entirely his own. You see, he’s pretty sure he knows Alice, he’s almost positive she was the woman he loved before Ramina, and whether she likes it or not he’s gosee UNKNOWN page 6 see TERRA page 4

Get your shawls ready, here comes Stevie Nicks! The rock goddess is bestowing Seattle fans with her presence at Key Arena this winter (thank you, Santa!).

Nicks hasn’t given a solo performance here since 2011 when she and Rod Stewart brought their collaborative “Heart and Soul Tour” to the Emerald City, although she has appeared with Fleetwood Mac in the area more recently. This calls for a holiday celebration all its own. The “24 Karat Gold Tour,” promoting the adored singer-songwriter’s 2014 album 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault, includes another iconic act, The Pretenders, and will touch down in 27 cities throughout North America. It kicks off September 25 in Nicks’ hometown of Phoenix and wraps up December 18 in Inglewood, California.

Interestingly, there are no concert dates planned for the month of October; it jumps from September 30 to November 2, signaling the possibility of the tour going to Europe, or perhaps a month-long break due to scheduling conflicts. Either way, Nicks is set to perform in Seattle on December 11 and you need to be there. We all need to be there. This is your opportunity to hear “Edge of Seventeen,” “Stand Back,” “Landslide,” and if we’re lucky, “Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You?” Tickets go on sale September 12 (10am) at LiveNation.com, all Ticketmaster outlets, or charge by phone 1-800-745-3000.

The lineup for this year’s FreakNight Festival is pretty much insane. The event, which has grown from a one- night show at a small concert venue in Seattle to a twonight affair (October 28-29) at the Tacoma Dome, now features some of the biggest names in the EDM scene. Appearing for the 2016 festival are Martin Garrix, Zedd, Armin Van Buuren, Galantis, Paul van Dyk, Jamie Jones and Flux Pavilion. That’s for starters because more acts will be added to the roster in the coming weeks. General admission tickets, priced at $304 (for both nights), are on sale now at ticketmaster. com. Another music icon, that of the jazz and traditional pop world, is coming to Seattle as well this winter. Tony Bennett, one of the best vocalists on the planet, even at the

night of Bumbershoot to see these local music icons in person.

The party got started with the duo jumping right into its first number, “Light Tunnels,” a track from their newest release, 2016’s The Unruly Mess I’ve Made. While Macklemore zipped back and forth between both sides of the stage, Lewis worked the DJ booth and helped with percussion on an elevated platform behind him. A full band, brass section and string ensemble assisted with the musical background.

“Ten Thousand Hours,” from the Grammy-winning album The Heist, and “Brad Pitt’s Cousin” were performed next, just before Macklemore told the crowd that the first concert he’d ever been to was at Bumbershoot (referring to seeing George Clinton when he was younger).

“This is my favorite festival in the entire world,” he proclaimed to everyone, dressed in dark blue jeans, white tank top underneath a silky unbuttoned shirt and sneakers. He’d later remove the shirt, then trade it in for one that was plaid with long sleeves.

A bit of a surprise was how early “Thrift Shop” was rolled out in the show, performing it within the first 15 minutes of the two hour concert. Everybody in the bleachers stood up to sing along, or dance, or both, as those crammed onto the field waved their hands above their heads.

Though the performance was fun and upbeat, it did take a few serious turns. Midway through, Macklemore addressed the police brutality issue with the song “White Privilege II” and told everyone that “Black is Beautiful” and “Black Lives Matter.” GEasy, who appeared at the festival the following day, joined him on stage for “Fuck Donald Trump Part 2,” which, as expected,

ripe old age of 90, will perform at the Paramount Theatre on November 1. The native New Yorker is known for the classics “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” “The Good Life,” “Because of You,” “Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me),” and “Rags to Riches,” to name just a few, in addition to acclaimed renditions of American standards, like Hank Williams’ “Cold, Cold Heart.” My personal favorite is “When Do the Bells Ring for Me?” from his 1990 album Astoria: Portrait of the Artist, which he performed brilliantly at Bumbershoot back in 2012. Two years ago he recorded and released the Grammywinning album Cheek to Cheek with Lady GaGa. Tickets for Tony Bennett go on sale September 12 (10am) at LiveNation.

The other new show of interest to announce is Ryan Caraveo on December 10 at The Showbox Market. The Seattlebased artist performed at Bumbershoot last weekend and is gaining national attention with his full-length album Swings and EP Happy Now. Visit showboxpresents. com for ticket information.

Finally, and certainly not least important, Sia has released a new music video for “The Greatest,” the leadoff single from her forthcoming album We Are the Children. The video, featuring young dancer Maddie Ziegler, is a powerful tribute to the Orlando massacre victims with imagery of people lying still on the floor, then brought to life, only to be suddenly put down again with a bullethole-pocked wall in the background. The video is available to view on YouTube. Sia will perform at Key Arena on September 29.

was well received by the audience. But even more powerful, and certainly inspirational, was his intro for the pro-LGBT ballad “Same Love.”

“I don’t want to be afraid of diversity, I want to be inspired by diversity,” he said boldly to the audience. “I don’t care about the color of your skin, I don’t care about your sexual orientation, I don’t care which bathroom you choose to use.” Fans around the stadium responded loudly with cheers and by clapping their hands, while many of them sang all the words to the song, including the closing lyrics “Love is patient/love is kind/I’m not crying on Sundays.”

During “Buckshot,” Macklemore invited four students from his summer rap camp at EMP to join him onstage to show off their skills, much to the delight of the crowd that supported them with firm applause and whistles. Meanwhile, “Growing Up (Sloane’s Song)” was dedicated to his daughter, who was attending her first Bumbershoot backstage, and during a quick break he tossed a tray of Dick’s Drive-In cheeseburgers into the audience, not to mention launching one of them at a fan far away wearing a banana suit.

When the Seattle pair landed on “Can’t Hold Us,” the audience was so raucous that Macklemore couldn’t hear himself or the band and missed the chorus, thus forcing a restart of the song.

“You guys were so turnt up, I couldn’t hear shit,” he said smiling and laughing.

Though “Can’t Hold Us” gets a wild, highly enthusiastic reception everywhere it’s played, there’s nothing like experiencing it in front of a massive hometown audience.

Every single person on the field, front to back, was bouncing up and down with their hands raised in the air.

The main set concluded with “Irish Celebration,” as Macklemore in a glit-

tery cape, white mullet wig and sunglasses ran around the stage waving an Irish flag.

Called back for an encore, the duo performed two dance-themed numbers, “And We Danced” and “Dance Off.” Returning for a second encore, they delivered a cool rendition of “Downtown” with Eric Nally and then capped the night with a cover of James Brown’s “I Got You (I Feel Good)” complete with fireworks.

As Macklemore himself said, this was a special night. After touring North America, Europe, Australia and a festival in Indonesia, the Bumbershoot set was the last concert before a two-week rest for he and Lewis, although they’ll soon head out again for five performances in Asia and another festival appearance in Atlanta. But even though they’ll only be in town for a few days, Seattle is always home to this beloved hip hop pair.

Death Cab for Cutie in peak form at Bumbershoot

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE BUMBERSHOOT MEMORIAL STADIUM September 4 “This band is called Death Cab for Cutie. This band is from Seattle, Washington.” Those words came directly out of the mouth of Ben Gibbard, lead singer and guitarist for the popular rock band at the start of their performance at Bumbershoot last weekend.

The group headlined the closing night of the festival, in front of a large crowd that ranged from teenagers to middle-aged parents. Because of its size and open seating area, Memorial Stadium was an easier spot for fans to catch Death Cab for Cutie, who sold out three shows last October at the Paramount Theatre.

“Marching Bands of Manhattan” was the first song played, and the first of five tracks performed from 2005’s Plans album. DCFC is now billed as a trio, consisting of Gibbard, bassist Nick Harmer and drummer Jason McGerr, but includes two to three touring musicians for their live shows.

Longtime followers were satisfied with the group’s inclusion of older favorites, from “The New Year” to “Title and Registration,” but they reached even further back in their catalog with songs from the first two albums, “President of What?” from

1998’s debut album Something About Airplanes and “Company Calls” off 2000’s We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes. A highlight of the performance was Gibbard’s subtle, acoustic solo rendition of “I Will Follow You Into the Dark,” in which he invited the audience to sing an entire verse on their own. Another great moment during the show was an extended version of “I Will Possess Your Heart,” showcasing

fine guitar work from Gibbard and Harmer.

From its latest album, last year’s Kintsugi, the band pulled out four songs, including flawless versions of “Black Sun,” “El Dorado” and “The Ghosts of Beverly Drive.”

“Cath...” and “Soul Meets Body” completed the main set, but DCFC returned to the stage for a three-song encore that featured two singles from their earlier days, “A Movie Script Ending” and the title track

from 2003’s Transatlanticism album. It was a fitting end to both a marvelous performance and a three-day festival.

This was my eleventh time seeing Death Cab for Cutie in concert and they’ve never disappointed; they always put on a great show. Bring on number twelve.

Frantic Traviata at Salzburg termission between Acts II and III! That’s right; Act III begins immediately after Act II! Setting the last act in essentially the same space as the raucous gambling scene in which the tenor shoves money into her mouth, her breast, and under her dress into her crotch – well, here’s where some appropriate scenery would have helped to set the mood for the death scene! No wonder it falls flat.

Tenor Rolando Villazón is in his vocal prime and more easily accommodates the athletics of the direction without letting musical matters suffer. The only thing wrong with this level of passionate delivery is that there are almost no moments of repose that might offer contrast. Passion loses its effect when that’s all you get.

(One gets a larger dose of his very funny antics in the 44-minute behind-the-scenes extra of rehearsals.)

Baritone Thomas Hampson delivers a powerful elder Germont, both vocally and dramatically, and he does his best to sound like a “Verdi baritone.” But his is a more lyrical instrument than I prefer in this role.

(Trouble is, I grew up on Leonard Warren and Robert Merrill!)

An interesting contrast to this Blu-ray is the vastly superior show from Los Angeles Opera, which I hope to review soon.

In it, Renée Fleming shows far greater respect for Verdi’s music and delivers a powerful dramatic performance opposite, again, Rolando Villazón, who comes off better because the show is not so frenetic.

Best of all, baritone Renato Bruson, very late in his career, sings the heart and soul of this music to tremendous effect. The Act II scene between him and Fleming is especially powerful.

I ordered this Salzburg Festival Blu-ray by mistake and will correct that error with the LA Opera disc ASAP.

by Rod Parke SGN A&E Writer LA TRAVIATA 2005 SALZBURG FESTIVAL DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON Blu-ray DVD If you saw the Met Live in HD presentation of La Traviata with Natalie Dessay, then you’ve seen this production. I disliked it then, and I dislike it even more on this Blu-ray from the 2005 Salzburg Festival, with Anna Netrebko, Rolando Villazón, and Thomas Hampson. I have nothing against minimalist sets when the drama and/or singing is so good that you don’t miss architecture, furniture, props, etc. Sadly, this nervous, over-active show is just annoying, despite the charm of the principals.

La Traviata is a great opera, both for its music and skill with which the drama is written. Unfortunately, there is nothing great about any part of this presentation. From the start, the hyper energy of the young lovers is allowed to dictate the frantic pace and rather careless musicality of the opening party scenes. Stage director Willy Decker could be excused for wanting to capture that energy, but goes too far and loses some of the musical precision that Verdi made so rewarding. Conductor Carlo Rizzi lets it get sloppy at time – not terrible, but just “off” enough to make me uncomfortable. Such an athletic show could not accommodate any older or larger singers.

Anna Netrebko in 2005 is not the singer she is today. The voice is much thinner and less beautiful. She is quite limited in coloratura skills, but generally gets the notes, while falling a bit short of the pitch on some of her softer high notes. Dramatically, she has some good moments, especially in Act II with the elder Germont. But her third act is surprisingly bland and lacks impact.

There’s no bed, by the way, with the singer lying on the floor, exactly where she fell at the end of Act II, with no curtain or in-

Bumbershoot 2016: Melanie Martinez draws hordes of fans, Tame Impala impresses, Run the Jewels underwhelms

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer BUMBERSHOOT 2016 SEATTLE CENTER September 2-4 Besides the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Death Cab for Cutie shows, there were a few others I was able to catch in their entirety at Bumbershoot.

Melanie Martinez drew a surprisingly big audience to her Sunday afternoon appearance at Memorial Stadium. The eclectic singer-songwriter, and former contestant on “The Voice,” sported a flowery patterned skirt and pink lacy see-through blouse with pink bra underneath, while her hair was dyed half black and half blonde; she also wore a nose ring. Martinez opened the hourlong set with her two biggest singles, “Cry Baby” and “Dollhouse,” but also pleased fans with other favorites from her debut album, including “Sippy Cup,” “Alphabet Boy,” “Pacify Her” and “Mrs. Potato Head,” which caused some young girls around me to burst into tears. Most of the artist’s songs deal with neglect, loneliness, abusive relationships and growing up in a dysfunctional family. Her stage props included a baby crib with a stuffed doll slumped inside of it and two sets of large baby blocks.

Tame Impala exceeded all my expectations with a whopper of a performance just before Death Cab for Cutie on Sunday evening. The Australian five-piece band began the show with the short instrumental

“Nangs,” then beelined to what’s become their signature hit, “Let It Happen,” as barefooted frontman Kevin Parker’s glorious vocals intertwined dreamily with the psychedelic fusion of guitars and keyboards. They

played a combination of songs from all three of their albums, but mostly from its two most recent, 2012’s Lonerism and 2015’s Currents, both Grammy nominees for Best Alternative Rock Album. During “Feels Like

We Only Go Backwards,” someone from the crowd spiked a beach ball that landed on the stage, and interestingly the group added a cover of Mark Ronson’s “Daffodils” onto their set list, which also included “Elephantm” “The Moment,” “Eventually” and “Why Won’t You Make Up Your Mind.”

I was really looking forward to seeing Run the Jewels at Bumbershoot, who attracted a reasonable-sized audience on Saturday afternoon, but unfortunately they were disappointing. Their short set felt amateurish and unrehearsed, not to mention their songs and interaction with the crowd were loaded with profanity, like “We came to Seattle to fuck up shit” and “I feel like Ken Griffey Jr. up in this bitch here.” It was unnecessary, and too early in the day, to hear the f-bomb and b-word mentioned repeatedly for the sole purpose of trying to sound cool, or hardcore. “Banana Clipper” was the only song I liked in their show, but they also performed “Blockbuster Night, Part 1,” “Sea Legs” and “Crown.”

Headlining shows this year took place outdoors at Memorial Stadium and indoors at Key Arena with very long lines to get into the Porter Robinson, Pretty Lights and Marshmello performances inside the arena, which all drew huge crowds. The legendary Billy Idol and rap sensation G-Eazy also attracted big audiences, as did Explosions in the Sky. A new feature at Bumbershoot this year was having images of the artists projected in the International Fountain as the performers appeared on stage.

First things first, acclaimed writer/director Joshua Marston needs to work more often. His first feature, 2004’s Maria, Full of Grace is a bonafide masterwork that earned star Catalina Sandino Moreno a well-deserved Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. His second, the powerfully austere, if unnervingly bleak, Albanian melodrama The Forgiveness of Blood didn’t hit domestic theatres until 2012, but earned all kinds of critical praise once it did. Both are dynamic, fearlessly toughminded features that refused to shy away from darker aspects of the human condition, attempting to find universal truths as their respective characters attempted to extricate themselves from unimaginably dire circumstances.

I’m not certain Marston’s latest, the puzzle box drama Complete Unknown belongs in the same conversation as the director’s previous efforts. It’s a little too on-the-nose, a little too neat in its chamber piece theatricality. At the same time, there are a number of themes working inside this piece that have me swirling in emotionally intrigued circles. This is the kind of movie that sits inside the viewer, marinating there as its various bits and pieces continue to resonate. Its central two characters are cleverly complex, each searching for different things as both try to connect to portions of

their personalities that may no longer existence but for very different reasons.

A central mystery is resolved right around 30 minutes into the barely 90-minute movie. But it isn’t the only one Marston has on his mind, isn’t the only question he’s asking his characters to seek the answer to.

Together, Tom and Alice must communicate all that is happening in their lives, must find a way to connect dots that haven’t been a part of the coloring book of their lives for over a decade. In doing so, each will try to find answers to some fairly tough questions; whether there ends up being comfort in the doing so, however, might be a different thing entirely.

Weisz, after a year where she’s been spellbinding in motion pictures as diverse as The Lobster and The Light Between Oceans, is as superb as ever, playing a character where the pieces of her makeup are more substantial than the sum of them. The reason for this? Alice is a purposeful enigma, a woman who reinvents herself at the drop of the hat, growing tired of who she is and what she is doing and, instead of trying to do something about that, decides to become someone else entirely instead. What Weisz discovers is the power of this person, the intriguing majesty of her mystery. Additionally, she also mines the missteps that haunt her, the ever-gnawing realization that she’s given up more than she can possibly ever know in order to be whomever she wants wherever she wants whenever she wants. It’s a tricky balancing act, one the Oscar-winner pulls off with majestic, transfixing grace, allowing her final scenes

to sparkle with a form of euphoric tragedy that should be contradictory yet somehow make perfect sense here.

Even though Tom’s a lot more straightforward, in many ways Shannon has the more difficult task. He must make this workingman’s life feel rock solid, yet at the same time with just a hint enough of doubt to allow his infatuation and curiosity as it pertains to Alice to remain naturally unforced. Shannon is in quiet observation mode the majority of the time, allowing Weisz to initiate the majority of the action, his responses to what she does fueling the emotional transformations both characters will eventually undergo. He’s a rock steady presence who is still not immune from temptation, how he reacts to it and whether or not he ends up giving in the catalyst that will drive the climactic moments towards their conclusion.

There is a beautiful scene where, entirely by chance, Tom and Alice make the acquaintance of Nina (Kathy Bates) and Roger (Danny Glover), and it is here Shannon’s gifts are in full display. Deftly coerced into impersonating a doctor out for a quiet evening stroll, Tom instantly begins to understand the addictive allure of recreating one’s life and persona at the drop of the hat. He sees what it is that has allowed Alice to become consumed with doing just that, the person she used to be forgotten as instead she puts all her energies into fully embracing the one she has given herself over to now. Shannon runs an emotional marathon during this sequence and does it in a manner of seconds, all of it made vital

and authentic to devastating effect.

Complete Unknown is far more dialogue-driven than anything Marston has crafted before, and it’s safe to say this story could be transferred to the stage with fairly little in the way of effort. This isn’t so much a complaint as it is an observation, and for my part I was perfectly fine with his story’s theatricality. His screenplay, co-written with Julian Sheppard, is smart in all the ways that matter, moving to the idiosyncratic beat of its own drum as it brings Tom and Alice’s night learning about one another to its absorbing conclusion. Offering up plenty of food for thought, I find the director’s latest to be one I’m eager to sink my teeth into again, the line between fantasy and reality an ever-blurring wonderland where truth can be an illusion, and impersonation is often anything other than a lie.

Thrilling Sully a heroic celebration of selfless courage

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer SULLY Now playing On January 15, 2009, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger accomplished the impossible. With both engines of his Airbus A320 damaged due to a freak bird strike, quickly determining there was no possible way to return to New York’s LaGuardia Airport without crashing, he decides on the only course of action available: he will land his plane in the Hudson River. In what was immediately dubbed “The Miracle on the Hudson,” all 155 passengers and crew aboard the plane survived, New York first responders, ferry boats and commuters pulling each and every one out to safety within minutes of the aircraft hitting the water.

Clint Eastwood’s latest outing is easily the most streamlined and economical motion picture of the acclaimed actor-turneddirector’s Oscar-winning career. With a deft, viscerally charged script by Todd Komarnicki (Perfect Stranger), itself born from Sullenberger’s memoir Highest Duty co-written with Jeffrey Zaslow, the movie is a confidently self-contained procedural that concerns itself with the incident, its aftermath, and how it affected the two men in the A320’s cockpit and little else. The director rarely allows his attentions to be maneuvered away from Sully and the emotions he finds himself dealing with immediately after his so-called heroics, and as such the movie ends up being one of the more thrillingly absorbing in all of Eastwood’s long and distinguished career.

bers of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) who are suspicious events needed to play themselves out as they did.

Other side characters filter in and out, little asides focusing on a few of the passengers aboard the plane, the crew members trying to maintain order, or those up in the flight tower attempting to come up with a solution to the plane’s miseries. But, by and large, this is a story about Sully, Skiles and what it took by all involved to accomplish what they dubbed a “forced water landing,” everything else incidental asides that have little bearing on the central emotional components being analyzed.

At barely 90 minutes, the movie plays as if it were shot out of a cannon. It zeroes in on Sullenberger’s mental state immediately, a terrifying nightmare of what could have happened in the skies above New York playing out within the first few minutes.

angle, the details coming to light with every replay startlingly intimate in its emotive strength. The second iteration, the one showcasing how the city of New York itself played a vital role in this January miracle is arguably the most effective, the way everyone from the Coast Guard, to Port Authority workers, to ferry boats filled with commuters jumped into action seconds after the plane hit the water simply extraordinary.

But even for a movie so gosh-darn efficient in its storytelling Eastwood still can’t help himself at times. Linney’s role is little more than a throwaway; Lorraine stranded, speaking to her husband over the telephone, yelping out melodramatic platitudes in order to ease his worried state of mind. It’s easy to understand why these scenes are here; they help showcase Sully’s insecurity over whether or not he made the right decision in landing the plane in the Hudson; they just aren’t particularly effective, the final confrontation between the

two a particularly risible groaner that feels annoyingly out of place. Other hiccups include a series of subplots involving a trio of passengers heading out on a golfing holiday, while an appearance by Michael Rapaport as a boisterously talkative New York barkeep is so stereotypically on-thenose it’s close to laughable.

Even so, the rest of the movie is so goshdarn terrific these missteps feel relatively minor. When sticking to its procedural elements, Komarnicki’s script is smart, crisp and dynamic, while depictions of the A320’s water landing, as well as Sullenberger and Skiles’ interactions with the NTSB, are absolutely superb. While no Unforgiven or Bird, or really even a White Hunter, Black Heart or Bridges of Madison County, Sully still shows that, when fully engaged, Eastwood is as great a director as any still working today, his rousing depiction of selfless heroism and unimaginable courage making my day and then some.

SGN EXCLUSIVE: Complete Unknown – An interview with writer/director Joshua Marston

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer Writer/director Joshua Marston burst onto the scene in 2004 with the drug mule melodrama Maria Full of Grace, newcomer Catalina Sandino Moreno earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her emotionally bludgeoning portrayal of a young woman stranded in the most wretched of circumstances. He followed that film up in 2011 with the Albanian drama The Forgiveness of Blood, centering things on two talented youngsters, their respective characters forced to deal with the repercussions of a family blood feud tragically spiraling out of control.

With Complete Unknown, Marston changes directions once again, delivering a drama about a thirty-something woman named Alice (Rachel Weisz) who attends the birthday party of family man Tom (Michael Shannon) as the guest of one of his most trusted co-workers, Clyde (Michael Chernus). What follows is an emotionally dense, dialogue-driven tale where fact and fiction constantly wage war one against the other, Alice and Tom sharing a connection that goes way beyond this supposedly chance meeting.

I had the pleasure to sit down for a few brief moments with the talented filmmaker.

Here’s some of what he had to say: Sara Michelle Fetters: Before we really dig into Complete Unknown, I’ve got to ask, you’ve made three movies, Maria Full of Grace, The Forgiveness of Blood and now this one, over the course of a dozen or so years. Why is that? Your films are just too good for us to have you working so infrequently.

Joshua Marston: I know, right? [laughs] Too bad you’re not the head of a movie studio.

Putting it simply? Filmmaking is a bitch. That’s all I can really say. I do have my next film ready; we’re scheduled to start shooting in January. So, I guess if I can keep halving the time it takes between each project, maybe we’ll finally get to a place where I’m making a movie every year or two. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Sara Michelle Fetters: In regards to Complete Unknown, where did the idea for this story come from?

Joshua Marston: I had another movie fall apart; it was sort of the straw that broke the camel’s back. I was like, screw this, I can’t keep having this happen, and I knew I needed to write something that was small enough that once I got the building blocks in place it was a certainty I’d be able to make it. I then ran into Julian [Sheppard], and we’d been talking about making something together for some time, and we both were fascinated by the basic idea of a main character who was not who she appeared to be. That she was nothing but a bunch of false fronts and not the person she was claiming she was.

This got us thinking. What would this feel like? What sort of experiences would you have? What is the cost of living like this? And what would happen if you ran across somebody you used to know in the past? Would they recognize you? How would they react when they discover that she had, not just changed her identity, but had done it more than once? These seemed like very interesting questions to us, and we set out to compose a script where these transitions wouldn’t all happen at once, but over the course of the entire story.

Originally, the idea was to take this concept and make it self-contained, that it would all take place in one location over the course of a handful of hours. But, once we started working more with the premise, we discovered it was juicy enough that I didn’t need to contain myself to one location. The movie was able to move around.

Sara Michelle Fetters: It is interesting that, while you do get out of the one room of the birthday party, that while you do open things up, at the same time the scenario is still so character and dialogue driven that it would be easy to imagine this script translated to the theatrical stage. That isn’t meant to come across as criticism, mind

you, just an observation, and one I’m sure you and Julian were cognizant of.

Joshua Marston: We were aware of that, certainly. And, to a certain extent, it was intentional. But that’s also why we worked so hard to push the story out of the nest, if you will. I think Julian and I just enjoyed imagining what would happen between Alice and Tom. One of the main ideas that we started with, once you’ve revealed what’s going on with this character, what happens next? She’s kind of like a bomb that has gone off in Tom’s life. She polarizes people. Understanding how that played out, I think that’s one of the things that kept us intrigued while we were writing the script. It was always a mystery where things were going to end up.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Speaking on that, I find it interesting that you provide AN answer to the central mystery fairly early one, maybe 30 minutes into the movie, but that doesn’t mean it is THE answer; you have to stay through all the way until the end for that. Did you worry, though, that people would potentially check out? That they would think you were solving your central mystery a little too fast?

Joshua Marston: We were worried that not all viewers would be as smart as you. [laughs] In all seriousness, yes, you are likely my ideal viewer. Your reaction is exactly what I think it was we were hoping for. At the same time, is that a concern? Is it a concern that viewers would not go with the movie?

Yes. Certainly. I wanted people to go with the movie. To understand that, just because one question has an answer, that doesn’t mean all of the ones being posed are going to be given solutions immediately as well.

What that means, I think, is that you have to let go of your own expectations of what [the story] should be or where it should go.

That can be a tough thing for an audience to do. It’s also something I’m actively trying to guide them towards being able to do.

But, the reality is some people will be able to go on this ride and some people will not.

It’s just the nature of storytelling. [Complete Unknown] changes gears very significantly and more than once, which isn’t something movies typically do. When someone settles in for the evening, when they decide what they are going to watch, they don’t always want it to suddenly become something else, something unexpected.

But, in the way that Rachel Weisz’s character polarizes the room, I wonder if there isn’t something of a parallel with people watching the movie itself. Some people will be able to ride with a movie that keeps changing. Others, not so much, they’re going to want it to be one thing. But the movie isn’t that. More, I never wanted it to be.

Sara Michelle Fetters: But isn’t that the thing with you as a filmmaker? You look at Maria Full of Grace, you look at The Forgiveness of Blood, on the surface both seem like pretty simple, straightforward stories. But as they progress, each becomes anything but, changing gears multiple times before proceeding to their

respective conclusions.

Joshua Marston: That’s true. You know, there is a desire, and sometimes it is useful and sometimes it’s frustratingly challenging, to tell stories that have not come out before but to masquerade them as ones the audience might be familiar with. With Forgiveness of Blood, in a blood feud story the central question typically is whether or not someone is going to pick up a gun, that you’re following a main character who you’re waiting to see pick up a gun and then commit revenge. But that’s not what I wanted to do. I’m telling a story, that’s actually a side story, in a way, that’s actually about collateral damage.

With, Maria Full of Grace, that’s the kind of story that would normally focus on the drug kingpin. But I don’t care about that. I wanted to tell the story from the other side, from the perspective of the mule. That just felt like a more interesting story to me.

With Complete Unknown, we didn’t sit down with the premise all worked out. We started with something, an idea, and then it evolved from there, and there came a point where I realized what we were conceiving as Alice’s character, there was just so much more we could do, so much other story to take advantage of. That allowed us to go in unforeseen directions that, I think, got us all really excited.

But, what I kept coming back to, what is most interesting to me is that fundamental emotional story, and with her, it wasn’t just about the benefits of living this life, but what the costs were, psychologically and emotionally, and how that was going to be juxtaposed with the life Tom, Michael Shannon’s character, was currently living.

That fascinated me. While you can imagine so many different stories for her, for Alice, this night, this story, is the most important one of her life in terms of what is genuinely at stake. That ends up being the story I’m interested in.

Sara Michelle Fetters: With Maria Full of Grace and The Forgiveness of Blood, you worked primarily with unknowns, even leading Catalina Sandino Moreno to an Oscar nomination for the former. Here, you’ve got bona fide movie stars working with you as far as Weisz and Shannon are concerned. What was that like?

Joshua Marston: It’s exciting, working with actors who are so talented, so skilled.

With those other two movies, there was a little bit of a period where you had to establish a rapport, where you had to teach them about movie acting, in a way. And, while that might be overstating things a little bit, because they were all so new there was a learning curve.

Here, it was like playing in a sandbox.

These actors are so incredible, so versatile, and they’re ready to go right from the first day. At the same time, there’s also all sorts of new challenges when you’re working with movie stars. They have expectations and rules about what they will and won’t do and about how they will or won’t work, and you have to learn how to navigate that

as this can be really constraining at times.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Still, especially as it pertained to the inherent nature of the character you had created, it had to be nice to be able to rely on someone as talented as Weisz to bring Alice and all her various emotional components to life. This character so easily could have become nothing short of a melodramatic cartoon, and in lesser hands likely would have.

Joshua Marston: She is incredible.

There is something about Rachel’s qualities on-screen that are absolutely devastating. And, you’re right, she grounds this character, finds her innate humanity, and those are exactly the conversations she and I had before shooting. We had long conversations about why this character does what she does. She asked if it was a fantasy and I was like, no, this is real, we’re treating this realistically.

I didn’t want to say it was a fantasy, because what I actually felt like Rachel was asking me was what was the tone of the movie going to be and thus what the tone of the performance she was going to go for was going to be like. The truth is, yeah, to a certain extent, it is a movie, it is a fantasy, and it’s not like I’ve ever met someone who has done this. There is a certain amount of fantasy involved in thinking this up. But I didn’t want to treat the character or the story like that. I wanted to treat it all as reality.

And Rachel, once she understood that, never wavered once. Her performance walks a really fine line. She’s extraordinary.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Then there is Michael Shannon. What can you say about him that hasn’t probably been said before?

I mean, what an astonishing talent. It’s like he can take any character, any at all, and instantly make them someone you just can’t take your eyes off of.

Joshua Marston: That’s a quality he has as a human being. What I experienced, that was impressive to me, was that he is able as an actor to portray a character who is clocking multiple things all at once keeping a number of balls in the air all at the same time. He’s in a situation where, with his character, there are seven other people in the room, and Tom has a relationship with each and every one of them.

Michael is able to keep track of all of that.

He’s clocking what’s going on with his wife, what going on with his friends and what is going with Rachel Weisz’s character at any given moment.

It’s like he’s got eyes in the back of his head.

Michael is able to keep an awareness about what is going on, what is happening, that’s amazing. That’s got be very difficult, and he has the ability to make it look very, very easy.

Sara Michelle Fetters: What do you hope to keep exploring as a filmmaker?

Where do you want to go next?

Joshua Marston: Everywhere. [laughs] I’m drawn to continuing to do movies like my first few, which are small, characterdriven and journalistic in fashion. But I’d also love to make a big budget sci-fi movie.

I’d love to do a thriller. But, the thing that connects them all, is that I’m interested in continuing to tell stories that are complicated, and that whether emotionally or psychologically, that these movies I make will leave the viewer with something to think about after they’re over.

I’ve been lucky. The response to my films has been gratifying, but it’s also been more than a little bit nerve-wracking. You spend so much time making these films, and then when you put them out there into the world it’s always surprising to hear the reactions because you never allow yourself to presuppose how people are going to respond.

With this one, I hope that people are both talking about the characters, thinking through what they saw and what was taking place off-screen, but then, beyond that, I want them to project their own selves into who these people are and how they’ve dealt with the choices they have made. Does it remain true that, wherever you go there you are? Or is that just an excuse that we tell ourselves in order to not come up with the courage to go out there and do something different? I hope that’s the sort of question that resonates with people.

Richards (the Rolling Stone’s lead-guitarist) kind-of-way. Rhodes, 54, announced in June that he was taking time off toward the end of the summer tour; and during the concert said who else would fill Rhodes’ makeup and high-heels but Amanda Warner – yes, a woman.

Duran Duran’s most recent album, Paper Gods, which was released last fall, has been their strongest best-selling album on the charts in 22 years.

But first the night truly belonged to writer, producer and musician, Nile Rodgers.

His band, Chic, performed for nearly an hour with their disco hits, “Good Times,” and “Le Freak” as well as songs (written by Rodgers) that have become Gay anthems, such as Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out” and “Upside Down” and Sister Sledge’s “We are Family,” plus David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance.” Most recently Rodgers’ collaboration with Daft Punk garnered a 2014 Grammy for “Get Lucky.” It was moving when Rodgers mentioned he had been diagnosed with cancer five and a half years ago and is now cancer-free.

The Xfinity Arena was 75% filled by the time Duran Duran started at 9:30pm with their new song, “Paper Gods,” and the crowd really went wild for “Wild Boys,” “Hungry Like the Wolf,” and “A View to a Kill.”

Followed by the sensuous, “Come Undone,” new material from Paper Gods continued with “Last Night in the City” and “What Are the Chances?”

the stage to be acknowledged for creating “Notorious” and “The Reflex” and the newer “Pressure Off.” Then the confetti canon exploded with purple confetti just in time for a fantastic mash up of “Planet Earth” and David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” with a photo of Bowie projected on the big screen.

“Ordinary World” came next along with a song from 1988’s Big Thing album and

I always forget the name of “I Don’t Want Your Love.”

I guess when I wasn’t paying attention Duran Duran recorded the super hard “White Lines (Don’t Do It)” in 1995 and the sunny “(Reach Up for the) Sunrise” in 2004 with a little “New Moon on Monday” added.

The regular show ended with the classic “Girls on Film.” Then the encore started

Scripted Festival Sketch Cage Match Tournament and includes members who are writers and performers from the CBS Diversity Showcase. Blade Brown calls themselves “a diverse group of performers that bring that urban slice of life theme to any sketch stage.” Deep Lez is an all queer-identifying group who have performed at Bumbershoot, Seattle SketchFest, and Lesbian living rooms all over the Pacific Northwest.

Celebrating 41 Years!

Life and death inseparable in the story of Louis Drax

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE 9TH LIFE OF LOUIS DRAX Now playing In his short life, Louis Drax (Aiden Longworth) has managed to live through eight near-death accidents. On his ninth birthday, his latest one might actually end up doing him in. Currently in a coma, under the care of the caring Dr. Allan Pascal (Jamie Dornan), with his mother Natalie (Sarah Gadon) in a constant state of worry and his father Peter (Aaron Paul) being hunted by the police, the boy is stuck in limbo, searching for answers that could be the key to his survival.

With a nameless underwater creature as his guide, Louis heads deep within his own psyche looking for the truth. Back in the corporeal world, Dr. Pascal is driven to do the same, his latest patient’s plight one he feels oddly connected to in ways he hasn’t before. At the same time, he’s also drawn to the grieving Natalie, finding something about her that makes him willing to do things that put his livelihood, and his marriage, in jeopardy. Together, he and Louis are both out to solve the same mystery, and with the help of psychologist Dr. Michael Perez (Oliver Platt) they might even be able to do it together.

Having never read Liz Jensen’s The 9th Life of Louis Drax, I had no idea what to expect as it pertained to horror master Alexandre Aja’s (The Hills Have Eyes, High Tension) latest flight of fancy. While I had guesses aplenty, not once did I surmise he’d be making some sort of strange, psychologically dense supernatural drama that felt like something ripped from cinematic pages composed by Tim Burton, Guillermo del Toro and Douglas Sirk. Make no mistake; this is one fantastical journey inside the psyche that most decidedly will not be

everyone’s proverbial cup of tea.

But it was mine. With a fascinating, multilayered script by actor-turned-writer Max Minghella, I found this to be a stirring adaptation built on a story I was continually intrigued by. Told in part by Louis himself, in other ways seen through the eyes of Dr. Pascal, the back-and-forth nature of this journey was one I happily responded to. I was fascinated at the way the screenplay juxtaposed the fantastical with the terrifying, the mystical with the mournful, and while the answer to the central mystery wasn’t hard to figure out somehow that didn’t make it any less powerful.

Aja, while not at the height of his powers, still does a marvelous job, managing to keep the melodramatic nature of the scenario from overwhelming things. If anything, he’s almost too measured at times, too reserved. The performances rarely, if ever, go to anything approaching an ex-

treme, and across the board the entire cast is asked to underplay things to a dizzying degree. While this grounds things in an innate form of humanity that is laudable, it also makes differentiating between emotional variances sometimes difficult, thus diluting the veracity of Dr. Pascal and Natalie’s flirtation noticeably.

Still, I’ve always loved the director’s visual chops, and he’s certainly on point here.

Working once again with frequent cinematographer Maxime Alexandre (this is their fourth collaboration), the pair manufacture a hypnotic spell that is sweeping in scope yet delicately personal in execution. The same goes for Rachel O’Toole’s (The Possession) creative production design and Nigel Evans’ (Deadpool) art direction, the overall effect manufacturing an almost childlike psychedelic quality that traverses the minefield between adolescence and adulthood nicely.

Admittedly, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about Dornan. Maybe it’s the residual bad taste left in my mouth after Fifty Shades of Grey, maybe he should be forced to only portray characters that allow him to use his natural Irish accent, but there was something about his performance that just felt a little bit off to me. I was never sold on Dr. Pascal, never cared as much about him as I kept feeling like I should have. Other than a few of his scenes with Platt and a rather nice, if far too brief, moment with Barbara Hershey (playing Peter’s understandably perplexed mother Violet), he was just too stiff, too rigid, to fully engage me, the remainder of the cast thus forced to do the majority of emotional heavy lifting.

Thankfully, they’re all more than up to the task, Gadon especially, who is downright superb. Her character is easily the film’s most complex creation, Natalie’s motivations coming from a place of personal distrust that border on terrifying. Paul is also wonderful, as is young Longworth, the two sharing a number of effective scenes together, one late in the picture drawing from me a couple of quiet tears I honestly did not see coming.

I can’t see anyone shrugging their shoulders in aloof indifference after watching The 9th Life of Louis Drax. Some will love it, others will hate it with a poisonous passion that will defy belief, but few, if any, will walk out of the theatre thinking it was only okay. Even if all the pieces didn’t fit together as nicely as I wanted them to, even with my not being won over by Dornan’s performance as I am certain I was supposed to be, I’m still drawn to Aja’s latest in ways I can hardly describe let alone fathom.

This story touched something inside of me that was primal, that was pure, its magical point-of-view more grounded in concrete everyday reality than some will initially allow themselves to believe.

Impressively cast Morgan still a sci-fi snooze

star-making turn in this year’s horror sensation The Witch with her titular performance here, and both are more than up to the challenge. Their give-and-take is the fuel driving this thriller’s engine, and without them little to anything of value could ever have been accomplished. There is an uneasy understanding that passes between the two I was uncomfortably captivated by, and I was curious as to how one would end up reacting to the other when push finally came to shove and action was unavoidably going to be called for.

Yet, even with Mark Patten’s suitably austere cinematography, Tom McCullagh’s (Starred Up) frigidly impressive production design and Max Richter’s (Testament of Youth) effectively unsettling score, even with the majority of the cast working at a relatively high level, the movie is never able to overcome its more obnoxious shortcom-

ings. Owen’s script, while aiming high, doesn’t offer up much in the way of new ideas. More than that, it telegraphs way too many of its more intriguing twists, spelling things out with obnoxious exactitude. The final confrontations are silly, things devolving into a never-ending game of huntescape-chase-fight! I couldn’t wait to see come to an end.

Case in point, there is a marvelously staged and acted sequence between Taylor-Joy and Paul Giamatti (portraying a clinical psychologist brought in to analyze Morgan’s mental state), the two of them engaged in a furiously passionate tête-àtête that builds in naturally authentic intensity as it goes along. Thing is, as terrific as the two actors are in the scene, and they are close to perfect, the dialogue is a bunch of hogwash, Giamatti’s character acting in a way that is so undeniably stupid one begins to wonder if this supposedly genius scientist is secretly insane. It’s like the performances and the script are working at cross purposes, and what should have been one of the movie’s high points instead becomes nothing short of a headscratching disappointment.

And that’s the rub. As amazing as the cast is, as visually creative as the younger Scott proves to be, even for a pop science fiction throwback this story ends up being far too stupid to maintain interest in for its entire 92-minute running time. It runs out of steam far too quickly, while the climax is a jumble of idiotic lunacies that grow in eye-rolling magnitude as things roll along.

Morgan has its moments, just not enough of them to make up for its ample shortcomings, all of which results in a thriller that doesn’t thrill and a mystery few are going to care to learn the resolution of.

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer MORGAN Now playing Corporate risk analyst Lee Weathers (Kate Mara) has been called to a secluded research facility to investigate an incident involving behavioral scientist Dr. Kathy Grieff (Jennifer Jason Leigh). While there, she will interview all of the facilities residents, including team leader Dr. Lui Cheng (Michelle Yeoh), chief scientist Dr. Simon Ziegler (Toby Jones), psychoanalyst Dr. Amy Menser (Rose Leslie), physician Dr. Brenda Finch (Vinette Robinson), her husband lab technician Dr. Darren Finch (Chris Sullivan), project manager Ted Brenner (Michael Yare) and nutritionist Skip Vronsky (Boyd Holbrook). Most of all, though, she is there to meet Morgan (Anya Taylor-Joy), the one entity everyone at the facility is there to fuss over.

Scientists playing with genetics is the key element lurking inside science fictionthriller Morgan, an exceedingly well-cast B-movie that also marks the featurelength narrative debut for producer Ridley Scott’s son Luke Scott. Working from Seth W. Owen’s dense, if obvious, script, the filmmaker is great at setting the stage, the feeling of anticipatory paranoia permeating through the facility with Lee’s arrival palpable the moment she steps through the door. But it’s in the home stretch where he falters, and as the film begins to reveal its myriad of secrets it’s almost as if all involved began to lose interest, and as such caring about the scientists, Morgan or their collective plight becomes increasingly difficult as things wind down towards

their inevitable conclusion.

On the positive side, this movie features a killer group of actresses, all of whom get to play smart individuals who are honored more for their respective intellects than they are for their sex appeal. Almost all of them are allowed to make their mark, even when their screen time ends up being relatively brief, Yeoh and Leslie making the most notable impressions as far as the scientists are concerned. In fact, the only one given noticeably short shrift is Leigh, the recent The Hateful Eight Oscar nominee apparently only around so she can make an early, and prescient, observation as it pertains to Lee; so other than picking up an easy paycheck, it’s difficult to understand what it was that drew her to the project in the first place.

The key elements, though, are Mara and Taylor-Joy, the latter following up a killer,
