by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN A&E Writer MATILDA THE MUSICAL THE 5TH AVENUE THEATRE Through September 6 Matilda the musical is an enjoyable, fun, traditional Broadway musical that is sure to delight everyone. Although looking like a “kiddie” musical by the untrained eye, the musical is geared towards people of any age. Based on the Roald Dahl novel, so those familiar with it will know of its dark story-line nature to begin with, the story Matilda has taken on several differ-

ent forms: a book, a movie, and now a stage musical. The 5th Avenue Theatre brings the first National Touring Company of this blockbuster musical to Seattle. The story is typical Dahl. There is a child that is somehow being abused by the adults that are around them. In this case, Matilda is a highly intelligent and precocious child born to Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood. They are parents who already have a son and have no interest in raising another child. Mr. Wormwood consistently refers to his daughter as a boy and Mrs. Wormwood pathetically ignores her daughter, prefersee matilda page 6

The 2015 Intiman Theatre Festival continues in full swing at The Cornish Playhouse at Seattle Center (201 Mercer St.) with John Baxter is a Switch Hitter, a big, new comedy by local playwrights Ana Brown and Andrew Russell, inspired by an outrageous-but-true story that hits close to home: the 2008 Gay Softball World Series held in Seattle. When local Gay softball league favorites the Seattle Fireflies go up against the champion San Francisco Hornets, an all-

American pastime turns into an impromptu inquisition as one team halts the game to accuse their opponent of having too many “straight ringers” on their roster. Veteran Seattle director Rosa Joshi leads a vibrant cast of 18 local actors ranging from festival veterans like Adam Standley and Charles Leggett, to other well-known Seattle artists like Reginald André Jackson and Chris Ensweiler. see john baxter page 8
