Local artists Alice in Chains, Temple of the Dog, Neko Case announce new concerts

Seattle rock band Alice in Chains is opening the concert, scheduled for August 12 at the football/soccer stadium; they also performed with GnR in Detroit, when the “Not In This Lifetime Tour” launched in late June at Ford Field. Alice in Chains are expected to play their top hits, including “Angry Chair,” “Would” and “Man in the Box,” in addition to songs off the group’s latest album, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here. The Pink Slips are listed as a supporting act, as well, for the Seattle performance. For tickets, go to ticketmaster.com.

Neko Case is coming home. And by home, I mean Tacoma. Spending formidable years of her youth in T-town, the Grammy-nominated folk artist usually performs to crowds in Seattle, from the Paramount Theatre to Bumbershoot to Woodland Park Zoo, where she recently played a sold out concert with kd lang and Laura Viers. After 32 years, “Weird Al” is still ageless and weird-ly funny!

by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer “WEIRD AL” YANKOVIC BECU ZOO TUNES WOODLAND PARK ZOO July 26 It was 1984 when I first heard this singer/ comedian hit the airwaves with parodies of hit songs from Madonna and Michael Jackson. While those music videos were comic gold, we thought “Weird Al” Yankovic had disappeared from the spotlight until a decade ago, but it’s evident now that “Weird Al” Yankovic has always been a part of pop culture – even to the point of being the punchline in many TV shows and films – and that was apparent in his Seattle stop on July 26th at Woodland Parks’ Zoo Tunes.

The concert was family-friendly and started at 6:00 pm on a Tuesday night, and most of the kids probably had no idea of ‘Weird Al’s’ iconic status.

The youngsters certainly got a lesson in the extreme with countless video montages of Yankovic’s appearances and name checks in TV shows and films (“Friends,” “The Simpsons,” “Veep,” Naked Gun …) over the past three decades entertained the audience during costume changes.

The show started with the band on stage and Al on the big screen walking around the Zoo singing, “Tacky” (the “Happy” parody) and after a quick change as Lady Gaga to perform “Perform This Way.” “Weird Al” performed as Devo (“Dare

to Be Stupid”), Michael Jackson (“Fat”), Lorde (“Foil”), Nirvana (“Smells Like Nirvana”) and Green Day (“Canadian Idiot”).

Yankovic then took a page from Madonna’s playbook by taking his earliest hits and sang an acoustic medley, short but sweet, with “Eat It” / “I Lost on Jeopardy” / “I Love Rocky Road” / “Like a Surgeon.”

“Word Crimes” (a parody of “Blurred Lines”) and “Amish Paradise” (a parody of “Gansta’s Paradise”) closed the show.

Then the stage was empty for several minutes before “Weird Al” and the Band

with backup dancers came out looking like Darth Vader and Storm troopers for the encore that featured “The Saga Continues” (a parody of “American Pie”) and “Yoda” (a parody of “Lola”).

At an ageless, 56, “Wierd Al” is still going strong and has many more parodies to come.

Lost Metal Weekend: First Annual Open Air Festival, Chicago

by Maggie Bloodstone SGN A&E Writer CHICAGO OPEN AIR TOYOTA PARK BRIDGEVIEW, IL July 15-17 Ah, the calm before the storm, that will be the excruciating hell-on-Earth known as the 2016 election season. Of course, “calm” for me consisted of three days of screaming guitars, jackhammer drums, roaring vocal assaults, several acres of ecstatic and effusive metalheads, and an opening night pyrotechnic display that would make Krakatoa’s final hurrah look like Justin Beiber Unplugged. Bliss.

July 15-17 was the inaugural weekend for the Chicago Open Air Festival and a totalimmersion spectacle destined to live in the memories of the masses of enthusiastic attendees for at least as long as our brain cells remain reasonably intact. The lineup was simply spectacular, 40 artists on two stages ranging from mid-80s industrial metal to innovative, energetic youngsters (see sidebar for full lineup), covering most every metal subgenre in between, and spaced out so that no one had any excuse to miss any of the acts (though somehow I still managed to miss a few – don’t ask). Even the B-list bands on the 2nd stage were A+ quality and delivered high-energy performances to a large and appreciative crowd, which proved as diverse and almost as entertaining as the music. Contrary to popular belief, not all metal bands sound the same, and not all metal fans look the same. Generally stereotyped as a genre for hormonal heterosexual white males (which may have been true in the gruesome ‘80s), the Open Air audience was an even balance of male/female, with ages ranging from 6 to 82, all body types and abilities, and while individual sexuality may not have been obvious, everyone in attendance could clearly relate to one another as MetalSexual. And the overall vibe, far from being a steaming morass of hostility and doom as conceived in the fevered imaginations of the gone-and-best-forgotten Parent’s Music Resource Center helicopter moms, could be best summed up in the tattoos two adorable new friends from Jersey sported upon their thighs: “PLUR” (Peace, Love, Unity, Respect). Think early Burning Man with even more fire and without clueless frat boys and less commercialism. most certainly have performed at O.A. had he been able to hang in there just a few months more. Synchronistically, the second I stepped into the Headbangers Bier Hall, “Ace Of Spades” exploded over the speakers in the all black, Germanic themed beer garden. A moment right out of central casting, sure, but so fuckin’ perfect.

I got to chum it up with a wide array of friendly folks from Chicago to Germany, many of whom seemed to see me as the weird rocker aunt they never had (as I saw them as the loving, accepting rocker kids I never had), admiring my kilt, tattoos, and the fact I was from legal-pot Seattle. Best of all, I got to talk music with people of all ages who appreciated Nina Hagen, Tom Waits, Psychic TV, and The Residents as much as they did any metal artist. Deadpool and Spider-Man crowd surfed. Otherwise nihilistic metal kidz silently reaffirmed Life by wearing “Fxck Cancer” t-shirts, which I originally assumed was in homage to Bowie and Lemmy, but is actually a 16-year-old awareness organization (http:// www.fuckcancer.org/) present at Open Air along with Take Me Home Animal Rescue.

Poster and t-shirt art reflected old-school Soviet propaganda posters as a refreshing alternative to the cliche’d skulls-tits-andsorcery kitsch long a part of Metal’s DNA. At least one person older than me, America’s Got Talent contestant John Hetlinger, who became a cult star with his recent performance of Drowning Pool’s “Bodies” got rock star love in both the media tent and on stage with D.P. later that day. Oh right, the music. A shit-ton to cover, but here are the highlights, IMHO: Rammstein: They came, they saw, they burned the shit down. In their only U.S. performance this year, the East German demolition crew started the weekend with a stage show that will remain seared into the cerebral cortexes of many young concertgoers experiencing them for the first time.

And they didn’t even use all their pyro, on account of restrictive outdoor fire laws. But if one goes to a Rammstein concert only for

the effects, they’re missing the point, which is the music. Industrial metal for the ages flawlessly executed with Wagnerian overtones, irresistible melodies, perverse sexuality, mayhem, transgression, angels and nightmares interpreted by the darkly poetic mind and ferocious baritone of vocalist/lyricist Till Lindemann. They opened with a new number, “Ramm 4,” a rhythmically irresistible mashup of lines from past songs, which might sound like a last-minute idea, but Lindemann spliced the phrases together in a pastiche of the cutup poetry of William Burroughs (Lyrics: http://affenknecht. com/lyrics/rammstein-ramm4/). I was particularly delighted at the addition of “Hallelujah,” a seldom-played and gorgeously arranged hymn the Catholic church is sure not to appreciate, and the exploding suicide vest effect at the end of “Zerstoren” (“Destroy”), which gives the mayhem-fetishizing lyrics a whole new chilling interpretation.

Ministry: My introduction to Industrial rock when it was still a category apart from Metal in 1985 was Ministry’s Twitch, unlike anything I’d heard before, with the possible exception of Lou Reed’s grand put-on, Metal Machine Music, except with lyrics and layers of danceable cacophony. Somehow, I managed to miss seeing them live all these years, and it was worth the wait. Their intro consisted of founder Al Jourgensen ranting into the backstage mic about the hellish Chicago traffic (which was oddly apropos, given the curse-of-modern-living theme often present in Ministry’s music).

Their best-known number is “N.W.O.” (New World Order) based on the notorious speech by President Bush the 1st on the eve of the Persian Gulf War and accompanied by a mesmerizing mashup of video images which have been part of their live show for decades, with images of war, civil unrest, and the spectral image of past collaborator William S. Burroughs (and updated with less than affectionate images of Trump).

They finished with the teeth-rattling classic “Stigmata.”

Hollywood Undead: New to me, but put me in mind of early Faith no More and Primus with infectious chanting lyrics (“War Child”). They also provided one of the most joy-filled moments of the festival by inviting some delighted, hyper young kids onstage for the finale (So what if every other word was “fuck”? I’m sure they’d heard worse).

Butcher Babies: Didn’t see them, but I heard ‘em. Just as well, as the Suicide Girl look of the lead singers just didn’t jibe with their screaming punk-metal vocals. But any band who can get a raucous mosh pit going before noon on a Friday has my respect.

Disturbed: How perfect is it to have a Chicago-bred act at the first Chicago Open Air? Especially a crowd pleaser like Disturbed with their solid melodic chops and superb vocals from David Draiman. These guys actually made “Sounds Of Silence” (yes, that “Sounds Of Silence”) Metal.

Really. If ever there was a song meant for 75,000 lighters and cell phones to be held aloft in the darkness, this was it.

Celebrating 41 Years!

Carcass: British grindcore pioneers have been playing merciless splatterporn metal since 1985-95 and 2007-present.

Music to perform vivisection by. Literally.

I know it’s possible to be a vegan metalhead (one of Seattle’s very best metal/punk/goth bars, The Highline, is strictly meat and milk-less). But if you happen to be one, go see Carcass live, but don’t watch the videos.

Trust me on this.

Helmet: On the metal side of late-80s Grunge, they can still show the young’uns how it should be done. Thrashy, punky, one of the best lead vocalist/guitarists in the business (Page Hamilton).

Slipknot: Sadly, I had to leave early, because my friends just couldn’t hack the drumming (three drummers performing what sounded like oil drums being abused by jackhammers), and they are by no means lightweights, being fellow Rammstein lovers. But what I got to see was characteristically seizure-inducing Slipknot pandemonium.

Gojira: I admit, when I think countries that breed quality metal, I think the U.S., Britain, Germany, and Norway, not necessarily in that order. France is down near the bottom of that list, just after, say, Greenland.

Bayonne-bred Gojira blew that assumption right out of my brain pan. Tough, supple soundscapes with kick-in-the-crotch percussion. Tres bitchin’!

Korn: Still one of the best live shows in the biz for 21 years (“Freak On A Leash” is that old? Kill me now.) Can’t argue with dreadlocks or bagpipes, arguably the most metal of instruments prior to the invention of the Gibson Les Paul.

Babymetal: I was actually expecting to not like them, but I heard both raves and slams from other concertgoers, and when people can’t agree on something like that, that usually means I’ll like it. And I did.

Unrelenting thrash-metal with Japanese pop sprinkled on top is a much more satisfying combination than one would expect.

Their stage image combines Kabuki and “Japanese Idol” (prefab teen bands). The three vocalists, “Su-metal,” “Yuimetal” and “Moametal,” while of age, appear disturbingly young, but then, so did the Powerpuff Girls, and they could kick tuchus with style, too.

Marilyn Manson: It seems like his set was cut short (I think I heard something

If you’re going for Vegas Metal, more power to you. But then you might just as well be Pop. Everyone has their own idea of what constitutes “Metal,” the essence and attitude of this diverse and unpredictable of musical genres & lifestyles.

Going by my observations on this most stellar of metal weekends, I have my own definitions. And if you don’t agree, well, you just ain’t Metal.

METAL/NOT METAL: Metal: Shredding your Achilles’ tendon while playing a show with your own band, being stuck in a wheelchair til Christmas, and still making it to the front of the VIP section to see Rammstein. (My new buddy Chase Adsit of Less Than Human, who made the trip from Tulsa, fergodssake.)

Not Metal: Standing in front of people in wheelchairs in the front of the VIP section. You can still see if you stand behind them, assholes.

Also Not Metal: Stepping on the bandaged foot of a woman in a wheelchair and not even acknowledging it.

Metal: 7-year old kids in Motorhead t-shirts.

Not Metal: Not giving your 7 year old kid ear protection at a metal show.

These are not hardened, jaded eardrums like yours. You’re just ensuring they will hate you and Metal later.

No Longer Metal: That Misfits’ Crimson Ghost image on every-fucking-thing. Especially when the wearer doesn’t know who the Misfits or the Crimson Ghost is.

Still Metal: That Joy Division “Unknown Pleasures” image. Even tough they technically weren’t metal, but should have been.

Metal: T-shirt with a picture of KISS with Led Zeppelin’s logo.

Not Metal: A Little Mermaid tattoo. Come on.

Metal: Tye dye from head to toe.

More metal than you’d think, really.

Not Metal: Wearing your favorite band’s flag around your neck like a cape. Not as metal as you think.

Metal: Looking out for people who aren’t 6’3” and 300 pounds in the mosh pit. Especially when you’re 6’3” and 300 pounds yourself.

Not Metal: Snitching on someone who snuck into the VIP section without a wristband.

Also Not Metal: Making a BFD of being kicked out of the VIP area. Especially when the main floor is what’s really Metal.

Not Metal: Commercialism.

Metal: One of the sponsors is Jack Fuckin’ Daniels.

Not Metal: Wearing pink platform boots to a metal festival.

Really Metal: Standing through 5 band sets and not caring if your pink platform boots are killing your feet.

Not Metal: A t-shirt that says “The day the government outlaws guns is the day I become an outlaw.”

Metal: Not needing guns to prove how “Metal” you are.

Most Metal Of All: Wearing a “Never Underestimate An Old Woman Who Listens To Rammstein” t-shirt.

Regardless of whether or not you’re old or a woman.

Albert Rodriguez: What can we expect from your upcoming shows? I know you have a new album out, so are you going to play songs from your album, or do standup, or a little bit of both?

Margaret Cho: I’m not sure yet, but I think it’ll mostly be standup. That’s what I generally do, as a live performer. I do make music in the studio, but I really want to do standup comedy. I’m taking a little break for the summer, so I’ll be glad to be back at it in September, so yours is the first shows that I’ll do and I’ll also do Australia from there.

Rodriguez: Both shows at Skagit Valley Casino Resort are sold out. Do you get more excited when performing for sold out audiences, or is it the opposite, where you feel like you have to go out there and kill it because it’s a packed house?

Cho: Well, I always try to do my best no matter where or when I’m performing, whether it’s a small house or big house. I always put in the maximum effort that I can with every performance that I do.

Rodriguez: Do you remember where and when your first standup appearance was?

Cho: It was the Other Cafe in San Francisco and I used to be a comic duo. I was really young, I was like 14 and I was in a comic duo with Sam Rockwell, who is now a very famous actor. He and I were a comedy team; we didn’t have a name, or anything, we just did shows and then his mom moved to New York and he left San Francisco. He became a famous actor, but I stayed with comedy; that was something I was really passionate about and something I’m still passionate about.

Rodriguez: At what point did you realize you were funny, that this was something you could expand upon and form into a career?

Cho: I was a really shy kid and doing comedy enabled me to have a sense of con-

continued from cover production, but he’s been extremely busy generating product over the last several years, getting noticed by Eugene O’Neill’s National Playwrights Conference, and will be leaving us to serve for a year as Minneapolis’ Playwright Center’s Many Voices Fellow. That’s not to say that more of his plays may well be produced here! He has a unique energy and commitment to his craft.

This play is a part of his “mortality trilogy” and examines the will to live, as a “big” theme. Two lonely souls, trapped inside their own limited imaginations, come together with unexpected results. Both are stuck in the past, having trouble opening themselves to Life’s possibilities.

The title refers to the unknown, the mystery of what might come next. Most of us can likely say that we wish we had a bit more certainty about our path forward, and probably would say that we sometimes fear

trol socially. It was hard for me to have connections with people, but as a comic I could rise above all of that social anxiety and fear, and truly express myself.

Rodriguez: You’re a comedian, but I know that in your shows you talk about some serious subjects. So, where were you and what was your reaction to the Orlando tragedy?

Cho: It was really upsetting. I was in LA and I turned on the news and saw what had happened. It was really hard because I’ve always looked at a gay bar, and gay clubs in general, as a very safe place. It’s the one place you can feel at home and relaxed because everybody’s the same, and while you’re there you’re seeking sanctuary and that’s why the violation of that was so terrible because it wasn’t just any club, it was a gay club, it was Latin Night, it was

young people, really young kids who were starting their lives. It’s just so horrifying that they had to die in such a horrible way.

It’s something that will take a long time to recover from, it was on the eve of LA Pride and so there was a lot of pain and tension and feeling like we didn’t want to participate. I felt like I couldn’t celebrate because I was really upset.

Rodriguez: With what’s transpired in recent months around the world, in Orlando, France, Germany and Belgium, do you approach sensitive subject material differently in your shows, knowing that people have a genuine fear?

Cho: Yeah, I have a big serious problem with people who want to hang onto the Second Amendment and hang onto their gun rights. I don’t think that it’s positive and we

Starting off with a vibrant and mystical opening, Benne weaves in an “angel” or agent of change who maybe protects or maybe stirs things up. This mysticism carries throughout the play, giving it a flavor that keeps the characters from getting mundane or cliché, though these two women are people we can recognize easily.

Nadia (Lillian Afful Straton) is a young woman who has carefully trudged along a daily path of sobriety until her days number more than a year. But she is still haunted by the memory of her dead lover, feeling like she should have died with him in the accident that took him. Recently, she’s been followed around by a crow. Perhaps he’s watching her from the grave.

Sheila (Gretchen Douma) is an older social worker who begins some kind of therapy sessions with Nadia. The reasons for this are murky, but don’t really matter.

There are some usual difficulties getting started between a young, resistant, loner woman and the one who tries, somewhat awkwardly, to offer support.

But they begin to find a way to understand each other, and through their association, they change each other. By the end, it’s clear that they have both managed to break through some of their self-limiting ideas and made personal progress toward goals they had difficulty envisioning as possible.

With the help of the Angel (Eva Estrada-Campos) and the apparition of Nadia’s dead lover, X (Jordan-Michael Whidbey), the story is told lyrically and affectingly.

The cast is solid and introduces three new faces to the local scene with veteran actor Douma familiar to some, though not usually at Annex.

Director Pilar O’Connell does a great job of evoking the atmospherics with the help of an all white set by Mary Ann Keeney, moody lighting by Ranleigh Starling, sometimes eerie sound design by Chris Leher, and screen puppets by Ben Burris.

This is a fine first production. Benne has a great inner ear for women’s voices (which he informs me is probably because he grew up in a household with his mother, grandmother and several aunts!) and re-

just don’t have any real sensibility around that issue, and I don’t know why. It’s really terrible. So, I do approach it with sensitivity because I know that people are very upset with what’s going on. I just want to have people live, you know. I just want people to live.

Rodriguez: Do you have any predictions for this election season and what might happen in November?

Cho: Oh, Hillary has to win. There’s just no way that anything else can happen.

There just has to be a surreal change in the way we’re thinking towards the election in knowing that we have to have Hillary as president. There’s just no other alternative.

Rodriguez: What is your feeling about gay Republicans and gay Independents who are not voting for Hillary?

Cho: It’s their choice. We can’t have Donald Trump as President, it’s too scary to think about. It just can’t happen. Everyone has their choice about what they want to do politically, but I just think Trump is the worst possible scenario. I’m not sure exactly what’s going on, but I really hope we consider and think about what the truth might be if Hillary is not elected.

Rodriguez: You’re looking so good and you always seem to have a positive attitude. Do you meditate, eat well, apply any spiritual practices into your daily agenda?

What’s your recipe for living good?

Cho: Well, I don’t drink alcohol. I am kind of clean living and that to me is really important for my health and my state of mind. That’s just what I’m doing for now. It’s really important to me to just feel good in my body. I don’t put anything in me that’s harsh. I try to have a good diet, but it’s mostly not drinking.

Rodriguez: Will you be extending this tour? I know you’re taking it to Australia, but any plans for it afterwards?

Cho: I’ll be going to Toronto and maybe a couple of other places. The tour has been all over, so I’m excited to take it to Australia. I’ve taken it to Europe, to Asia, all over the US, and so there will be a few remaining dates that I think will be announced later.

Rodriguez: Are you constantly refreshing the show with current events and things in the news?

Cho: Always. It’s a constant process; it’s like always brewing, it’s always really current and that’s a really important part of what I do, it’s a work in progress.

I like to change it up every day to whatever is happening.

Rodriguez: Will you be spending any time in the city when you head this way?

Cho: I don’t think so. I think I’ll just be doing the shows. I don’t know how much time I have, so I’ll have to figure that out when I get there.

Lily Tomlin Lily Tomlin has been a cherished star in the entertainment firmament since she joined the groundbreaking television series “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” in 1969, when it was rated the No. 1 show and watched by over 25 percent of all American television viewers. She and the colony of characters she created have continued to evolve, grow, deepen and adapt to this day, as Tomlin expresses her talents in nearly all forms of media.

On Television It was “Laugh-In” – which TV Guide magazine named one of “50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time” – that introduced mainstream America to Tomlin characters like the overbearing (and snorting) switchboard operator Ernestine, the philosophical 5-and-a-half-year-old Edith Ann and the ultimate very tasteful suburban socialite Mrs. Audrey Earbore III. As part of her concern for animals, Tomlin earned an Emmy for her narration of the documentary “An Apology to Elephants.” She has worked with elephant activists all over the country to take elephants out of zoos, is on the boards of Actors and Others for Animals and the Shambala Sanctuary. She also works with Paws Elephant Sanctuary in California.

She has received the Petco Foundation’s Hope Award for being a leader in animal welfare, and she established the Voice for the Animals Foundation’s Lily Award, to highlight just a few of her interests.

Tomlin’s humanitarian efforts earned her the Honickman Foundation’s Golden Heart Award for her impact in breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty.

CoCA presents “What You See is What You Sweat” “What You See is What You Sweat” flips cultural appropriation around and builds relationships between communities of color where whiteness is not the center Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) in Seattle is proud to present “What You See is What You Sweat” from August 4 - 27.

What would it look like if artists and curators of color could appropriate a conversation about “appropriation” in contemporary art? The aim is to flip the script.

After all, appropriation is a power play.

White supremacy, sexism, transphobia or classism function plainly by dint of it. Yet Western artists from Duchamp to Warhol have made use of appropriation to shift cultural contexts. If we look at appropriation in an open-ended way, what is behind the curtain of ownership, cultural exchange, authenticity, and meaning making here?

And can we use appropriation to find the types of relationship-building taking place between communities of color where whiteness is not the center? And to this end how are white artists looking at history and social change? Creativity and power (both balanced and imbalanced) make odd bedfellows. Suffice it to say, “What You See is What You Sweat” is a 21st century ride on the dark side of possibilities.

“What You See is What You Sweat” is made up of a curatorial team of five doers and thinkers who are creating space for arts audiences and artists who shop in the ethnic foods aisle and those who hit the streets for social change. They include: C. Davida Ingram (artist/writer/curator/educator), Chieko Philips (curator/historian/exhibition designer), Christopher Shaw (artist/designer), Leilani Lewis (curator/producer) and Zorn B. Taylor (artist/educator/futurist).

A diverse selection of media from video and textiles to paintings and photographs will be presented from artists including Alex Anderson, Juventino Aranda, Romson Bustillo, Micha Cardenas, Nicholas Galanin, C. Davida Ingram, Satpreet Kahlon, Mark Mitchell, Darius Morrison, Paul Rucker, Zorn Taylor, Jeffrey Veregge and Viradeth Xay-Ananh.

An opening reception with the artists and curators will be held on August 4, from 6-9pm at CoCA PS35 located at 106 Cherry Street on the northern edge of downtown Seattle’s Pioneer Square neighborhood.

A muddled, unfocused return for superspy Jason Bourne

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer JASON BOURNE Now playing Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) has stayed off the grid for the past nine years, traveling here and there, eking out a living any way he can. It’s how he wants it, to be left alone, not wanting to think about the chaos and the carnage that ripped the life he knew away from him and the devastation he brought forth against them to see the scales of justice balanced. Now all this former spy and assassin wants is to be forgotten, to enter the dustbins of history as an afterthought or asterisk never to be thought of again.

This isn’t going to happen, especially when one of Bourne’s former handlers, Nicky Parson (Julia Stiles), arrives in Greece looking for him holding stolen top secret data files lifted directly from the CIA’s central server in Langley. Whether inadvertently or on purpose, she’s put him once again in the middle of a conspiracy that’s as far reaching and as ominous as it is deadly, the current director of the agency Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones) particularly keyed up about the prospect of plopping his former employee in an early grave.

He’s aided by an upstart agent, Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander), the young woman a programming genius eager to make a name for herself with the powerbrokers at the White House and in the Pentagon capturing Bourne.

Both director Paul Greengrass and actor Matt Damon stated on multiple occasions it would take some kind of special story for either of them to return to author Robert Ludlum’s world of international spies, labyrinthine intrigue and political conspiracies so complex the fate of the world could be in jeopardy if they ever came to pass. Even though the story started in 2002 with Doug Liman’s The Bourne Identity, it was the double-whammy of espionage awesomeness The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum that made the character matter, Greengrass and Damon crafting pitch-perfect action epics which rank as two of the finest arguably ever made.

Universal tried to keep the story going with The Bourne Legacy in 2012, franchise screenwriter Tony Gilroy taking over the directorial reins as he attempted to showcase what was going on with other spies and inside other agencies at the same time Jason Bourne was wreaking havoc on the CIA. The movie, revolving around an-

other enhanced spy, portrayed by Jeremy Renner, and brilliant scientist targeted for assassination, played by Rachel Weisz, was perfectly fine in and of itself even if it admittedly paled in comparison to its predecessors. Still, the box office take, while respectable, wasn’t astronomical, and as such the studio decided to pull out all the stops

The biggest failure is the construction of the supporting players. The hallmark of the originals, including The Bourne Legacy, is that no matter how small the character, each movie went out of its way to make them three-dimensional, to give them a reason that allowed them to live and breathe inside this world that felt authentic. Here,

close to the vest as it pertains to her, not wanting to reveal additional secrets in case another film comes down the pike. Problem is, Lee is so nondescript, so ephemeral, she barely exists at all, recent The Danish Girl Oscar-winner Vikander visibly struggling as she attempts to make this woman someone worth being interested in.

in hoping they could convince Greengrass and Damon to return for another adventure.

I really wish they wouldn’t have. Working from a script cobbled together by the director and frequent writing partner, and this film’s editor, Christopher Rouse (Captain Phillips), it’s not so much Jason Bourne is a bad action-adventure as it is a pointless one. If this is the special story Greengrass and Damon were talking about in regards to their demands that had to be met before they’d return, I’d hate to see the ones that didn’t pass muster. Honestly, while there are a number of potentially interesting ideas in regards to digital surveillance and governmental intrusion into a citizen’s everyday life, the movie rarely, if ever, does anything interesting with any of them. On top of that, the basic reason for Bourne’s return revolves almost entirely around his unresolved daddy issues, and considering everything he went through and battled in the original trilogy this feels slightly inconsequential in comparison.

that isn’t the case. Dewey has a plan and is doing Very Bad Things, but he’s doing them in a way that makes him sound more like a Bond villain from the 1970s than they do anything else. He’s also covering up past misdeeds in about the worst way possible, bringing in a lethal agent to assist him who just happens to be one of the few who could make Bourne even more driven to see them all destroyed than he was before he discovered pummeling fight club opponents in Greece and sent them back on the run from authorities.

Which is better than can be said for Vikander’s Heather Lee. Who she is, why she makes the decisions she does, none of it makes a single lick of sense. There are veiled hints that she is connected to Bourne somehow, but those are thrown out and never thought of again almost as soon as they are hinted at. Same goes as it pertains to her relationship with Dewey, and it’s never entirely clear whose side she is on. It’s obvious Greengrass and Rouse want to play things

It’s not a total loss by any stretch of the imagination. Greengrass, in some corners considered the inventor of the “shaky cam” phenomenon that came close to destroying the action film, reminds viewers why so many found it a good idea to copy his visually compulsive aesthetic after The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

Working in divine synchronicity with cinematographer Barry Ackroyd (The Hurt Locker) and his editor Rouse, there’s a kinetic fluidity to the fight sequences and car chases that’s every bit as mesmerizing now as it ever was in those previous motion pictures. It’s impossible not to feel energized by some of what happens, and, like every film in the series, action fuels character and character fuels action, both so intimately intertwined neither could exist without the other.

Damon still owns this character, and from the first moment we see him again it took all my self-control not to let out a tiny little yelp of joy. But the real scene-stealers prove to be Riz Ahmed as a wunderkind programmer with mysterious ties to Dewey and veteran French superstar Vincent Cassel as an assassin who has very good reason for wanting to see Bourne dead. They two of them manage to overcome the script’s shortcomings, making their characters, not just memorable, but essential, and it’s hard not to wonder just how much better the movie might have been had Greengrass and Rouse given them just an ounce more to do.

But the longer I think on Jason Bourne the more it starts to upset me. While the technical components are strong, while it’s wonderful to see Damon back in the spyversus-spy game, while Greengrass could direct a story like this in his sleep and probably still make it breathlessly fascinating, the script’s inability to do anything of interest or for that matter worthwhile is just plain frustrating. There’s just no depth here, no reason for all the carnage, and if this truly was the best all involved could come up with in order to revivify the franchise then maybe they shouldn’t have bothered, Bourne’s resurrection sadly nothing to get excited about.

This is a franchise that exists more because of its international popularity than it does for anything else, Manny and his family and friends continuing to survive in large parts thanks to that and that alone. Which is fine, I guess, and little kids continue to find these films relatively enjoyable. For me, though, I think I’m just about done giving them a chance, and the next time this gaggle of crazy critters ambles back on-screen I think I might just choose to stay home.

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer ICE AGE: COLLISION COURSE Now playing After he unearths an otherworldly prophecy deep within the bowels of the Earth, adventurer Buck (voiced by Simon Pegg) leaves the lost underground world of the dinosaurs to warn his friends Manny (Ray Romano), his wife Ellie (Queen Latifah), their daughter Peaches (Keke Palmer), her fiancé Julian (Adam Devine) and best buddies Diego (Denis Leary), Shira (Jennifer Lopez), Granny (Wanda Sykes), Crash (Seann William Scott), Eddie (Josh Peck) and Sid (John Leguizamo) of an impending disaster. A meteorite is hurtling towards the planet, and if it strikes it will wipe out almost all life living upon it. It’s up to them to come up with a solution, the entire group walking once again into harm’s way in order to see their close-knit interspecies family survives yet another calamity.

And thus begins the saga of Ice Age: Collision Course, the fifth animated adventure featuring this ragtag group of family-friendly characters, this collection of mammoths, saber-toothed tigers, sloths and other various mammals proving to have an enduring allure for a number of viewers the entire world over. Scrat’s back as well, of course, still chasing acorns, this time going to positively interstellar lengths in order to possess even just one of them. It’s all a bit of exceedingly familiar freewheeling craziness where Manny and company learn a number of life lessons as they continue to forge unbreakable bonds of togetherness,

and as such there’s precious little to get annoyed or upset about as things move along their well-trodden path.

Yawn. While a decided step above the group’s last outing, 2012’s risibly annoying Ice Age: Continental Drift, that doesn’t make watching this newest entry in the series any more palatable for viewers over the age of six or seven. It’s animated television fodder, nothing more, content to poke around in its own nonchalant inoffensive way not really caring whether or not the impact it ends up making upon the viewer is anything substantial. The sequel speaks in generalizations and platitudes, moving with the momentum of a slug in a race to the finish line with a one-legged tortoise, and as such I kind of hoped that meteor would hit its target making further adventures impossible.

There are a few nice moments, not the least of which is the reintroduction of wild card Buck, a musical sequence showcasing him saving a Triceratops egg from a crew of flighty predators whimsically imaginative. But the movie is so gosh darn intent at keeping the momentum moving at a breakneck pace there’s never the possibility characters are going to evolve more than they already have or situations will become even minutely more complex. Even the Scrat moments, usually the best little asides these Ice Age movies have to offer up, feel tired, moderately rundown this time out, the shenanigans involving him and his acorn just not nearly as humorous as they have been in the past.

ing alive was a challenge. We only found that Orry had an (unpublished) autobiography later.

MK: He also dressed some of the greats, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Ava Gardner, Barbara Stanwyck, What did you find out about this? Were any of them a Muse?

GILLIAN: Bette Davis and Orry spoke warmly about each other (in both of their books) and as an actor [he] understood Bette’s approach on character. Both Ingrid Bergman and Kay Francis were also Favorites. (Surprisingly) Marilyn Monroe was Not a Favorite (Tony Curtis had a better ass). The film is really all about Art of Costume Design, of going from glamorous to plain to Glamorous.

MK: In the film, besides Kelly being an alcoholic, you also address about his sexuality as well as a rumored relationship with Cary Grant. Were there others?

GILLIAN: Orry was quite open and wasn’t afraid to stay single, but as most men (in Homophobic Hollywood) back then, he drank and partied and working for a very homophobic industry; and the film is really about their love story and yes, there were other relationships with men. [See the film.]

GILLIAN: I have 2 film projects that I am working on. Nothing I could divulge at this time.

It is more than a documentary, it is also part docudrama, featuring Orry (played very campy by Aussie Darren Gilshenan), and it includes some great interviews with Jane Fonda, Angela Lansbury, Scotty Bowers (At Your Service) and Gay Hollywood expert, William Mann (Wisecracker).

I had a chance to chat with the director, Gillian Armstrong about her film and the legacy of Orry-Kelly.

MK SCOTT: Gillian, you are a director and producer based in Australia, who has directed a FAB doc, Women He’s Undressed, on the infamous Oscar-winning Hollywood costume designer, Orry-Kelly.

What drove you to his story, besides him also being Australian?

GILLIAN: My producer approached me and I had no idea who he was and then I learned what films he did the costumes for and then (of course) finding out he came from a small town in (Kiama) Australia and I was interested on how he got to Hollywood.

MK: Orry had quite a resume – from designing iconic costumes from iconic films, from An American in Paris, Gypsy, 42nd Street, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, Arsenic and Old Lace, Harvey, Oklahoma!, Auntie Mame, and Some Like It Hot. What was his favorite?

GILLIAN: That was a challenge; without Orry (himself, who died from liver cancer in 1964) and just a handful of people that actually knew him personally still be-

Misbegotten Suicide Squad a candy-colored debacle

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer SUICIDE SQUAD Now playing It’s been a rough year for Warner Bros and DC Comics. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was supposed to be their answer to Disney and Marvel, a shot across the bow signifying the start of another cinematic universe of super-powered heroes audiences would delight in and critics would extol the virtues of. It would be the glorious lead-in to future projects which included 2017’s double-whammy of Wonder Woman and Justice League, their roster of heroes (which includes Batman, Superman and The Flash, among many others) dwarfing just about anything The Avengers could ever hope to assemble for battle.

Or so they thought. While not exactly

disappointments, you can also chalk it up as Warner Bros and DC’s second strikeout as it pertains to their desire to craft and create an extended cinematic universe for its roster of heroes. Ayer’s film, while perfectly cast, while oozing potential out its neoncolored pores, while featuring an opening 20 minutes that are intriguing, unique and, most of all, amusingly subversive, manages to be the kind of mind-numbing disaster that grows worse and worse the more one thinks about it. The script is an untidy mess that’s as lazy as it is uninspired, the central conundrum facing this roster of bad guys forced to be heroes a nonsensical hodgepodge of lunacy that makes practically no sense whatsoever.

The idea is simple enough. With the threat of aliens as powerful as Superman or an army of angry meta-humans an uncomforting possibility, ethics-be-damned federal agent Amanda Waller (Davis) puts

sadly becomes anything but. The director is forced to play it safe throughout, and as such this team of in-it-for-themselves bad guys never feel nearly as dangerous or as lethal as they most unreservedly should.

The last third, in particular, is something of a magnificently lethargic drag, and while Ayer stages the action reasonably well, the fact there is no emotional component to anything taking place makes most of what transpires almost impossible to care about.

Yet the cast is sensational, on that point there is little to debate. All the actors bring, if not their A game, something reasonably close to it, and even when the script limits their ability to creatively maneuver they still manage to make each of their respective characters uniquely interesting in and of themselves no matter what. Some (Smith, Kinnaman, Fukuhara, Hernandez) get more of an opportunity than others (Beach is frustratingly underutilized), while some

ahead in a manner that is entirely different than what predecessors Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill and Heath Ledger did with the role. But he’s a phantom, filtering in only occasionally, a side secondary character that Ayer felt compelled to add almost as if he were forced to and not because he’s an organic facet of the story he is trying to tell. Leto is a maelstrom of malice ready to explode at any second, and one could only wonder what might have been had he been more central to the proceedings than he sadly proves to be.

The only one who gets out of this entirely unscathed and is utilized just about perfectly is Davis, her depiction of the duplicitous, underhanded Waller superb. doing badly at the box office, receipts for Batman v Superman were hardly stratospheric, while critic reaction was, to put it politely, rather savage. The film’s director Zack Snyder, while not banished from the Warner Bros lot, saw his duties plotting the course for the DC universe significantly lessened. The studio also went out of its way during this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego to present trailers for both Wonder Woman and Justice League that purported to show that they’d heard the complaints from fans and critics alike and made adjustments accordingly, the response to both presentations exceedingly rapturous.

But the big play for Warner Bros and DC was going to be this opening of Suicide Squad, an anarchic adaptation of the imaginative, genre-bending comic book series writer and directed by End of Watch and Fury impresario David Ayer. Featuring a star-studded cast that includes the likes of Will Smith, Viola Davis, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto portraying the likes of famed villains and antiheroes Deadshot, Amanda Waller, Harley Quinn and the one and only Joker, the studios showcased a series of color-mad, imaginatively rambunctious trailers that had fans frothing at the mouth and critics understandably curious to see if it could live up to its obvious potential.

forth an intriguing idea to the brass at the Pentagon. She wants to assemble a super team of a collection of criminals she dubs the “worst of the worst,” assuring even the most skeptical general she has the means to control them no matter what challenge they might present. The group will be led by patriotic American hero Col. Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) and overseen by soul-stealing ninja Katana (Karen Fukuhara), small explosive charges embedded in each villain’s neck a little extra incentive that will ensure they’ll follow orders no matter how dangerous they prove to be through to the bitter end.

Through a series of unfortunate events, Waller’s plan needs to be put into action, Flag forced to assemble his meta-human dirty half-dozen sooner rather than later.

Next thing he, Katana, the lethal assassin Deadshot (Smith), the mentally unbalanced Harley Quinn (Robbie), crazed Aussie Boomerang (Jai Courtney), flame-throwing former gangbanger El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), human reptile Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and climbing impresario Slipknot (Adam Beach) know they’ve been dropped into an impossible meat grinder, a sinister demon building a lethal zombie army as she manufactures a weapon that will allow her to rule all of humanity.

(namely Courtney) have explosive intros only to be forgotten about as things move towards their climax. Each somehow manages to put their stamp on the proceedings, allowing for interest to be maintained even when things get so tiresomely formulaic I almost felt like taking a nap.

But the best performances, or at least two of them, are also the most problematic.

Robbie is a mesmerizing Harley Quinn, but the perfunctory way Ayer tells her origin story is rather troublesome. He keeps it at face value throughout, almost as if he’s unsure of the best way to handle the character other than to just hint at the brutal, psychologically destructive misogyny that fuels it and then run in the opposite direction. It’s a testament to Robbie’s ferocious fearlessness that this isn’t nearly as offensive as it potentially could have been. Even when the filmmaker spends way too much time ogling his actress’ assets there’s something about the carnal, craven playfulness that she brings to the role that kept me intrigued, and when Quinn undoubtedly returns in a future story here’s hoping she’s given something more substantive, and less demeaning, to do.

Then there is Leto’s Joker. There have been plenty of reports of the actor’s onset antics (which included gifting one of his costars a dead rat) in order to keep in character, and to say he commits himself fully to his portrayal of the iconic villain is an absolute fact. And he’s terrific, forging

possessed by the 6,000-year-old soul of an Aztec sorceress dubbed the Enchantress.

The young actress can’t seem to get a grasp on either woman; the way Ayer forces her to jump back and forth making it impossible for her to ground either of them in a way that could be deemed authentic or genuine.

Both June and Enchantress remain nondescript throughout, and considering the latter ends up playing such a big part in the events poised to rip the human world to shed this is a major problem the film is never able to overcome.

I’m still excited about Wonder Woman, that Comic-Con trailer so outstanding I can’t help but continue to hope director Patty Jenkins has managed to accomplish what Snyder and now Ayer have failed miserably to achieve. But the studio’s continued mishandling of these characters is just plain baffling at this point, Suicide Squad potentially even more of a disaster than Batman v Superman ended up proving to be. While that’s not entirely accurate, that doesn’t mean the movie is safe from condemnation, and as misfires go this is one comic book debacle Warner Bros and DC are going to have a hell of a time trying to recover from.
