by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer BURYING THE EX Blu-ray release There are moments in every film critic’s life when journalistic integrity, for at least a

passing second, gets thrown into the wastebasket and unbridled fan-fueled enthusiasm takes over. It’s that instance when you’re either sitting in front of or chatting on the phone with someone you’ve idolized to the point of extravagance, looking at them see dante page 8

DANCE LIKE A MAN PRATIDHWANI (AT ACT THEATRE) Through August 9 Pratidhwani is giving us a unique opportunity to experience an Indian play by an Indian playwright, Mahesh Dattani, based in India. And it’s a brilliant one, exceptionally well produced and directed by

Agastya Kohli. Dance Like a Man, presented at ACT Theatre in their ACTLab partnership, is a family comedy-drama set in one room, a rather conventional set-up for an unfolding theme of much larger scope. The play appears to be a familiar older generation versus younger generation piece about traditions and the always-changing pressures of modernity. But it’s not two generations; it’s three. Village Theatre Dog days of August still announces its 15th have plenty of theatrical Annual Festival of New openings Musicals Great Wall developmental production open to the public Village Theatre is proud to announce the line-up for its 15th Annual Festival of New Musicals, coming up August 7-9. Village Theatre’s Festival of New Musicals began in 2000 and has long been a nationally renowned birthplace of new musicals and the foundation of the theatre’s commitment to new work. This year’s festival will see six new musicals brought to life through the creative collaboration of over 100 artists, performed and directed by the region’s foremost theatre professionals and guest artists from across the country. STAGED READINGS New musicals Marco Polo, Barcelona, Death: The Musical, Cubamor, and Bridges will be presented in staged readings, rehearsed and fully sung using scripts. Though staged readings are not open to the general public, audiences are partly comprised of Village Originals members

who are encouraged to offer feedback and constructive critiques of the work, thereby becoming an important part of the developmental process. DEVELOPMENTAL PRODUCTION: GREAT WALL The developmental production of Great Wall is also an integral part of the Festival of New Musicals, with tickets on sale and available to the general public. Featuring limited sets and costumes, developmental productions are the next step in the process of developing a new musical, allowing authors to see a show with movement for the first time. Previously developed in the Festival of New Musicals in 2012, Great Wall is directed by Jerry Dixon with choreography by Daniel Cruz and music direction by Christopher D. Littlefield. Great Wall runs in Issaquah from August 6-9, during the see village theatre page 5

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer There is a lot of theater going on that started performing in July and continues into the dog days of August (parks shows, for instance – Seattle Shakespeare Company/Wooden O and Greenstage) (see my July stage openings column in the SGN, July 3, for listings); there are also workshops, readings and musical festivals that require membership fees to be a part of. But there

are still shows opening this month, and they are an eclectic bunch! Based on the different ethnicities on stage this month, our fair city looks much more cosmopolitan than the demographic studies suggest! There are also musicals and a new play based on a Seattle Gay baseball controversy. see august theater page 6
