talents go far beyond that as he brings his highly acclaimed, one-man show, “An Evening With Groucho” to Seattle for one night only. The show (as well as Mr. Ferrante’s performance) is the only one personally endorsed by Arthur Marx, Groucho’s son, and the estate of the comic genius, Groucho Marx. The Seattle Gay News sat down to chat with Frank Ferrante, the man bringing Groucho to life.

SEATTLE ART FAIR August 4-7 announces highlights of 2016 Fair SEATTLE ART FAIR CENTURYLINK FIELD EVENT CENTER August 4-7 Seattle Art Fair, presented by AIG, shares exhibitor highlights, along with specific times of performances in its Projects and Talks program for its second edition, running August 4-7 at CenturyLink Field Event Center. Garbage playing the Paramount Theatre in September

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer Feeling trashy? Well, Garbage has returned with a new album, Strange Little Birds, and a tour to support it, which includes a concert date here in Seattle. Initially, the Shirley Manson-led rock band hadn’t listed any Northwest shows on its current US Tour, but added ten dates onto the itinerary a week ago. The Seattle concert is slated for September 19 at the Paramount Theatre with tickets on sale now at axs.com; the group’s previous performance in the Emerald City was three years ago at The Showbox SoDo. Manson, by the way, interviewed with Seattle Gay News in 2013, as did fellow Garbage member Butch Vig in 2005.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega is also coming back to Seattle for a one-night performance at The Triple Door this fall.

Known for the ’80s hits “Luka,” Tom’s Diner” and “99.9 Fahrenheit Degrees,” the Grammywinning artist will perform on the main stage of the intimate downtown venue on November 16. For tickets, go to tripledoor.net.

Also coming to Seattle soon is Avi Buffalo on September 29 (High Dive), Adam Green on October 7 (Sunset Tavern), Har Mar Superstar on November 5 (The Croc-

The lineup for the 2017 Wintergrass Music Festival has been announced. The four-day event, happening February 2326 in Bellevue, will feature nearly 40 acts,

including Tim O’Brien, John McEuen, Hot Rize, Balsam Range, Turtle Island String Quartet, Mike Marshall, The Kruger Brothers and The Paperboys, to name a few. Performances will take place on four separate stages inside the Hyatt Regency, in Bellevue, with tickets on sale now at wintergrass.com. In addition to the music, the

festival will also include workshops for adults and children.

Let the games begin! With music, of course. The 2016 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony will be staged August 5 from Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and will feature the musical talents of Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Paulinho da Viola, Jorge Ben Jor, Luiz Melodia, Paolo Jobin, and Thiaquinho and Projota, who recorded the Rio Olympics 2016 theme song “Alma e Coração.” The ceremony kicks off at 8:00pm (BRT, or 4:00pm PST) with NBC providing both televised and streaming coverage (nbcolympics.com).

No word yet on performers scheduled for the Closing Ceremony, set for August 21.

Finally, if you haven’t seen Stranger Things yet, you’re missing out on a fantastic new show. A big draw to the spooky series is the music, mostly ’80s hits from Foreigner to The Clash to Modern English.

The original score and theme song, however, were composed by Austin, Texas-based duo Survive; definitely take a listen to it on YouTube when you get a chance.

Child star-turned-author and newly out Mara Wilson coming to Town Hall

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer MARA WILSON TOWN HALL September 21 She was the cutest little thing in Mrs. Doubtfire. A sweet, bright-eyed and whispery-voiced girl who tugged at our heartstrings, as the youngest of three children experiencing the trials and aftermath of a family divorce. In the 1996 film Matilda, she charmed us again with a performance of an eight year-old that uses special powers to teach those around her a lesson.

That little girl is all grown up now. Mara Wilson, who starred in both movies opposite marquee actors – Robin Williams, Sally Field, Danny DeVito – is 28 years-old and the author of a new book, Where Am I Now?: True Stories of Girlhood and Accidental Fame. Having completed her studies at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Wilson turned her talents from acting into writing and storytelling. When she isn’t penning guest columns for the Daily Beast and Jezebel, she’s performing her own one-woman show, What Are You Afraid Of?, on a small stage in New York. But she isn’t completely done with acting, set to appear in upcoming episodes of “Broad City” and “BoJack Horseman.”

Recently, Wilson outed herself as Bisexual shortly after the Orlando tragedy in a series of Twitter posts. One of her messages stated ““I said I *used* to identify

as mostly straight. I’ve embraced the Bi/ Queer label lately” and also posted a photo of herself in front of a Gay bar.

Her book is said to detail her early days as a child star, losing her mother at a young age to cancer, her bumpy journey into womanhood and her humorous, relatable struggles with self-acceptance. To promote it, Wilson is embarking on a book tour that

continued from cover self-titled 1982 album, but the energy level rose sharply when Sting followed with “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You,” a Grammywinning track from his fourth solo release, Ten’s Summoner’s Tales. The crowd responded with cheers and claps when he landed on the time-appropriate lyrics “You could say I’d lost my belief in our politicians/They all seemed like game show hosts to me.”

A balding, gray-bearded and fuller-bodied Gabriel, at 66, showed physical signs of aging, yet his voice was still in tact for the most part. Meanwhile, Sting looked as fit as a teenager, wearing tight jeans and formfitting V-neck shirt with cropped, spiked hair, and sang outstandingly throughout the concert, even picking up the slack from a slow-paced, almost too-mellow Gabriel.

The two men dueted on a dramatic version of Gabriel’s “No Self Control” and then Sting performed “Invisible Sun,” backed by a full band that supported both artists. While Sting played several numbers from his days with The Police, Gabriel barely touched his work with Genesis; the lone entry was a cover of the group’s “Dancing with the Moonlit Knight.”

Interestingly, Sting sang lead on an uninspiring delivery of Gabriel’s ’80s hit “Shock the Monkey,” but Gabriel was more present and fared better on the next tune, “Secret World.”

The audience was in for a surprise during Sting’s performance of “Driven to Tears” when in the second verse Eddie Vedder suddenly appeared at a microphone, joining him for the remainder of the song.

Vedder also dueted with Gabriel on a spinetingling rendition of “Red Rain.”

An enthusiastic version of “Message in a Bottle” got the entire floor level of fans on their feet, clapping and dancing along.

When Gabriel was on, he was really on, such as a perfect run-through of “Solsbury Hill,” which is perhaps his most beloved piece of music. Many people sitting in the stands throughout the arena stood up immediately when the first chords of the 1977 gem were strung. Sting further delighted concertgoers by playing a huge fan favorite, “Englishman in New York,” from his second solo album, Nothing Like the Sun. He kept the upbeat momentum by performing a big hit from The Police vault, “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic.”

An emotional tribute to Jo Cox, a British Labour Party politician murdered a month ago, was offered in song, “Love Can Heal,” by Gabriel. Later, he led the arena in a memorable sing-along to “In Your Eyes,” most commonly recognized as having been featured in the 1989 film Say Anything...

Sting pulled out a couple more oldies but goodies, “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free” and “Roxanne,” as audience members cheerfully bobbed their heads and

swayed their bodies to the sounds of the music.

An encore included the pop classic “Every Breath You Take” and a rousing, climactic rendition of Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer,” in which the band and backup singers danced and kicked their feet in the air uniformly during the lyrics “I kicked the habit (I kicked the habit)/Shed my skin (Shed my skin)/Oh won’t you show for me (Show for me) I will show for you (Show for you).”

These are the concerts you just can’t miss. The ones you’ll be talking about years from now. The ones that, despite coming up short on rent, you’ll be very glad to have seen and heard in person. They just don’t make musicians like Sting and Peter Gabriel anymore; those who witnessed their remarkable joint performance last week can unquestionably attest to this. The Seattle date on the duo’s “Rock Paper Scissors” tour was the only Northwest show of their world itinerary.

continued from cover Eric Andrews-Katz: What was your introduction to Groucho Marx?

Frank Ferrante: There was a kid in my neighborhood, Rich Ivler, and he knew about the Marx Brothers. They were special to him, and one night he told me about this movie on the local channel, A Day at the Races. I must have been 9 or 10. Groucho was there in his greasepaint mask, Chico with his hat, and I remember the “tootsie footsie scene. Groucho was making asides to the camera, and I became enamored with the brothers’ freedoms and wildness. I didn’t understand all of it, but I knew it was irreverent and wrong. I had never laughed that hard and I became obsessed with Groucho. That night, my brother and I were reenacting those scenes. I started to do research and that opened a new world to me.

Groucho has opened many worlds for me.

Andrews-Katz: What made Julius Henry Marx change his name to Groucho?

Ferrante: There are different theories on that. At the time, there was a comic strip called Sherlocko, the Monk, and the characters had “o’s” at the end of their names. Another story says that there was a poker game, and the dealer started the family nicknames. “One for you Harpo” (that brother played the harp), “One for you Chico” (he liked to chase “chicks”), and since Groucho was the serious one, the dealer said, “And here’s a card for you, Groucho.” The name stuck. He was never crazy about the name but it was there. A third story said when he was young, he wore a “Grouch Bag” (a money holder worn about the neck to prevent theft), and that’s how he earned it.

Andrews-Katz: Groucho came from a family of performers. How did they influence his future career?

Ferrante: There’s a ton of stories there.

His Uncle Al Sheen was, at the time, half of the successful vaudeville team, Gallagher and Sheen. Uncle Al would show up and throw silver dollars so there would always be a crowd around him. Groucho’s mother, Minnie pushed her children into the spotlight. She was a dominant mother and told him he wasn’t going to be a doctor, and he was going into show biz. Think “Mama Rose” light.

Andrews-Katz: It is stated that you were “discovered by Arthur Marx (Groucho’s son) in 1985.” How did that come about?

Ferrante: I was putting together my senior project at the University of South California, under my mentor William White.

He told me about a class that was offered called Director’s Research, and Professor White suggested that I put on a one-man show back in 1984. I did the publicity, and found a piano player. I put it up and personally sent out invitations to anyone I could think of connected to the Groucho family:

Bob Whitey (who did the first documentary on the Marx Bros.), Arthur and Miriam Marx (Groucho’s children), and they all showed up. It was a packed house and it was a life changing moment. Arthur came back stage and said if/when he did a show on his father, he wanted me to be in it. A few weeks later I graduated, and then a year after that, I find myself in Kansas City playing Groucho. The next thing I know, I’m in New York doing the show.

Andrews-Katz: Is your one-man show “An Evening with Groucho” a reproduction of Groucho’s show by the same name, or more an original collaboration of his life and works?

Ferrante: I use stories from his performance at Carnegie Hall, but this has evolved over the last 30 years into something different. It has a free form with many autobiographical elements. There are parts that are anecdotal, improvised, filled with songs from Groucho’s Broadway and film careers. We take on his peers and brothers and family, but the premise (for me) is this show is what it would have been like to experience Groucho back in 1934, at least, between Duck Soup and Night at the Opera. It’s as close as you might have gotten to experience him on stage when he was at his prime. Carnegie Hall didn’t happen until 1972.

Andrews-Katz: How do you find your character and voice as Groucho before going on stage?

Ferrante: When I sit in front of the mirror, it’s the costume that helps. I love the way the coat feels on me, it’s magical. It’s like I’m putting him on, and that’s the be-

ginning. Once the overture starts, I listen to the music and can’t help but let all the Marx love flow over me. I find myself flashing back to being 9 years old, and I tell myself that my job is to share my love and joy with the audience, and connect with Groucho.

Once the makeup is on, I am Groucho.

Andrews-Katz: What is the most surprising fact you learned about Groucho Marx over the years?

Ferrante: The fact that Groucho had a real sensitivity, especially for his daughter.

She was a recovering alcoholic and the fact that he never gave up on her, I thought was moving and impressive. She may have been the closest person to him in his life. The fact that his heart was broken by her fate, and she was heavily into drinking when he passed away, weighed on him. She has remained sober since his death. He communicated with his children and treated them as adults always. He cared about their opinions.

Andrews-Katz: What would you say is the most misunderstood feature about Groucho Marx?

Ferrante: He was a serious man and cared deeply about the world. He had mild interests in sports, gardening, and was a voracious and avid reader. He prided himself on the relationships he formed with authors and “thinkers,” since he never got past the 6th grade. He was an extremely loyal friend keeping friendships for decades. He also liked to promote younger talent.

Andrews-Katz: What is it about Groucho Marx that makes him still stand apart almost a century later?

Ferrante: I think it’s the originality

of his persona, the freshness of his attack and the point of view – he takes down everything and everyone. He says what we all want to say, and doesn’t suffer fools gladly.

He’s able to represent on our behalf and attack when we can’t. We can live vicariously through his actions and it never gets old.

Groucho is a little scary because we don’t know what he’ll do next. He always spoke his mind.

Andrews-Katz: If you could play any role – regardless of limitations – what would it be and why?

Ferrante: I’ve always wanted to play Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha. The absurdity of not caring and believing in something, even when others think it’s ridiculous. I love that idea. It’s hopeful and I like the sense of hope in the face of bitter reality.

continued from cover als off a daisy and counting them (upwardly) and then a countdown of some official sort from 10 and a bomb exploding. It was meant to take advantage of people’s innate fear of getting bombed and was supposed to make people fear Barry Goldwater – the upstart Republican who many felt was extreme and rash.

That topic, particularly when another rash Republican is running for election, now, is a compelling and potentially fascinating idea. Playwright Sean Devine has been working on a play, Daisy, for a number of years, and decided he would focus on the ad agency, itself, that developed the concept and created the ad. They won awards for it, later, too (the Cleo). That particular choice might have undercut the ability to exploit the excitement of that topic…

This summer, Devine had the opportunity to work on his script through our local Icicle Creek New Play Festival. ACT Theatre decided to debut the play in their main stage season, and it opened July 14th. The theme of the script is that of the ethics of playing on people’s fears and whether it is manipulative and wrong or just calling out something that already exists inside people.

The tensions of that time were extremely high. The Vietnam War was not yet a “war,” yet events there were heating up to a fever pitch. Civil rights tensions were also causing riots. Children were being taught how to “duck and cover” in schools in case bombs fell on them.

The table is set for a lot of potential, here. However, the script falls short in delivering the tension. It’s not clear exactly why, but there are some specifics that could be pointed to. First of all, advertising is and always was predicated on manipulating people’s emotions, “solving a need” they would say, or “finding the pain and providing the solution.” It could have been useful to have the ad agency folks acknowledge that before they start arguing about just one particular commercial of manipulated content.

They do talk about television as different, and it was still a novelty; there were still only three essential stations and all people who watched had only those to attend to, so there was a national cohesion that existed in a sort of vacuum of any other history. But there had been movies for quite a while. The power of the screened image to make people feel things was clear to many, already.

The script introduces an agoraphobic sound engineer, a real man named Tony Schwartz, as the guy who created the ba-

sic idea of that ad and perceived it as doing something good for the world. Then there are competitive ad agency folks who essentially take advantage of his distance as a consultant to take his idea and take the credit.

His monologues about sound are the most particularly compelling parts of the script. But they don’t actually propel the ethical argument. They demonstrate his specific understanding of the power of sound, which is helpful overall. That point is lyrical and universal, so it’s great to include it. However, we’re not led to any clarity about how sound combines to help “trick” us emotionally, which I perceive is part of the point of the overall theme.

The first act is way overly long and full of the polemic of the “ethics” of developing an ad that is not attacking the political content of the nominees but rather playing on emotions of the voters. And it complicates by making a woman the main scold to men who (including by implication President Johnson) have no wish to be scolded.

This woman (a hybrid-recognition that there were women at this ad agency who were “allowed” to do similar work to men) is set up to be the ethical watchdog by the agency head and then immediately undercut by the same man. It’s not clear that Mr. Devine is aware that he’s done that. Then in the second act, this woman’s fear of Goldwater makes her acquiesce to the making

of this odious commercial so quickly, after hating it, that it destroys the entire first sentiments.

I am not mentioning the ACT Theatre makers of the play because I want the focus to be on the subject area. Also, they don’t subsequently elevate the play so that it works even if the script doesn’t, the way I wish they could have. They do a serviceable job, though the projection work of Tristan Roberson is stellar.

But, while Devine could not possibly have predicted that the 2016 similarities would be so keen to 1964, there is a potent parallel. And the play focus could lead to explosive emotions and much introspection, but unfortunately, it as yet does not.

Everything about the production and the script seems weirdly muted.

Fontaine’s The Innocents a spiritually rapturous triumph

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE INNOCENTS Now playing I watched director Anne Fontaine’s (Gemma Bovery) post-WWII drama The Innocents (Les innocents) in a state of perpetual awe. From the early, eerie, unquestionably haunting images of a young nun traipsing through a barren, snow-covered Polish countryside going who knows where, to a moment of communal redemption hidden under the shroud of unthinkable secrecy and unimaginable sacrifice, the movie is a consistent triumph, achieving an overwhelming aura of brilliance that it manages to sustain first second to last. Not only is this Fontaine’s crowning achievement behind the camera, it is without question one of 2016’s most mind-blowing achievements, and I seriously doubt I’ll see many of a similar ilk at any point over the next six months.

It is December of 1945 and the ravages of war still reverberate throughout Poland.

A doctor working for the French Red Cross, Mathilde Beaulieu (Lou de Laâge) cannot turn a blind eye when a Polish Benedictine nun, Irena (Joanna Kulig), arrives out of the wilderness begging for help. When she arrives at the convent, Mathilde discovers something beyond the pale, a member of this holy sisterhood on the verge of giving birth. Delivering the baby, Mathilde is next presented to the order’s authoritarian Reverend Mother (Agata Kulesza) by her trusted second Maria (Agata Buzek), the pair revealing to the doctor a shocking secret that stops her blood cold.

Loosely based on a real-life incident involving Red Cross doctor Madeleine Pauliac, what Mathilde finds herself smack-dab in the middle of is an incident so disturbing just the thought that even an ounce of it is true is an enough to scar a person right down to the marrow. After being brutalized by the Germans, these Polish nuns were then raped and murdered by the Soviet forces who had supposedly arrived to liberate them. Many of the survivors turned out to be pregnant, causing a crisis of identity and faith that put all they believed in and cherished to an inconceivable test.

The Innocents is essentially a tale of two wildly different women, Mathilde and the

Rev. Mother, trying to understand one another as they come up with what they feel is the best solution to the problems facing the nuns.

One is a woman of science, a person who left God behind long ago as she watched the ravages and horrors of war run rampant across to the globe. The other, a woman so devout she is willing to sacrifice her own immortal soul if she believes it will sanctify a place in heaven for her fellow Benedictine sisters, who doesn’t so much fight against the doctor as try to diminish her influence upon the convent. Both have their hearts in the right place, both understand the other is only doing what she feels is best. Yet the paths they take couldn’t be more divergent, and it is that deviation upon which Fontaine builds her film’s foundation.

Standing in-between them is Maria, a nun who believes just as fervently as her beloved Rev. Mother yet is also a woman who sees the wisdom in what it is Mathilde is trying to accomplish. She is the one who will have her faith tested the most, the one who must grapple with all of the many layers of this ghastly situation. As such, it is her transformation that matters, the one that is the most intimately affecting, watching her find the strength to carry on, do the right thing and still maintain her relationship with the God she holds dear magnificent to behold.

All three actresses deliver superb, award-worthy performances. Kulesza, so stunning in Oscar-winner Ida, is equally amazing here. The subtly of her work, the dexterity of the emotions she traverses through as she plays them all so close to the vest, everything hid behind a cloak of piety she has clung to for so long she no longer knows how to remove it. Equally wonderful is de Laâge. So memorable in The Wait and in Breathe, she brings a calm sincerity to Mathilde that is mesmerizing, and watching her traverse through so many emotional minefields while attempting to keep this painfully destructive secret is truly incredible.

It is Buzek who most impresses, however, the way she brings Maria to life sublime.

This nun is asked to do the impossible, and in the process finds her most intimate beliefs put to the ultimate test. Buzek conveys every step of this journey with notable specificity, every turn of phrase, nod of the head or gentle caress leading to a greater realization that can only come by journeys end. But what is most impressive is how she manages to express all of this in a way that

stays true to the nun’s spiritual convictions, allowing the film to be a truer treatise on religion than any so-called “faith-based” feature could ever hope to emulate.

Fontaine has made some very good motion pictures in her directorial career, most notably last year’s Gemma Bovery and 2008’s The Girl from Monaco, but she’s never come close to this sort of brilliance, her steady hand steering things to their finish with a level of confidence that’s tremendous. She is aided in no small part

by Caroline Champetier’s (Holy Motors) superlative cinematography, her depictions of this austere landscape ravaged by war recalling the melancholic intimacy of films like Andrzej Wajda’s Ashes and Diamonds and Agnieszka Holland’s Europa Europa.

As strong as the technical aspects are, it is the emotional component that makes The Innocents a potential instant classic.

Fontaine allows horror and catastrophe to intermingle with hope and salvation, shaping things in a way that allows the spiritual components to take root as if they had been burrowing deep into this story’s cinematic soil for multiple generations. The balance is always spot-on, and when tragedy strikes it does so right alongside redemption, in the process painting a fuller picture of religious complexities amongst the pious and the nonbeliever that is extraordinary. This movie is a one-of-a-kind experience, watching it a divine revelation I’ll likely be preaching the virtues of for a long time to come.

Mahler bliss in a compact disc

by Rod Parke SGN A&E Writer MAHLER’S TENTH SYMPHONY SEATTLE SYMPHONY CD Not since Joni Mitchell’s first LP have I been so taken over by a musical release as by this new CD of the Seattle Symphony in Mahler’s tenth symphony conducted by Thomas Dausgaard. Unlike most dreaded “ear worms” (“Yes, Jesus loves me…”) I love having this one going around in my head. The rich melodies of the first movement especially recur at various moments of my day, making my thoughts soar with the sweep of those long, enveloping phrases.

When as a child I first heard Mahler, it sounded to me like music from outer space ­– something super-modern, floating and freeing. I don’t know which symphony KUOW-FM was sending out of that big speaker of my neighbor’s new-fangled FM radio, but I thrilled that this new medium could so transport me. Nowadays, it takes extraordinary performances to do that. And the recording must supply sound that clearly defines what each instrument or group of instruments is doing.

This new CD from live Seattle Symphony performances fills those requirements in spades. Melinda Bargreen, Seattle Times critic, remarked, “It was impossible to be in the house and not realize that something rare and significant had taken place.”

I am most grateful that so much of that essence was captured so well by the SSO engineer, Dmitriy Lipay. Having survived through most of my adult life with Eugene Ormandy’s Columbia Masterworks recording (1965), this modern recording comes as a revelation, both for its sonic clarity

and Dausgaard’s vastly superior grasp of Mahler’s message.

First the sound. The dynamic range is vast; in fact, one must play this disc at a much higher volume setting in order to hear the softest passages. Mahler’s supreme skill at orchestration includes, like Bruckner, mountains of sound, within which there are endless subtleties and delicacies. This stereo recording reveals them all, as Dausgaard etches each inner line of Mahler’s polyphony, with the SSO’s musicians’ eager response. In the Ormandy recording, there

are no soft passages; everything is compressed into an over-emphatic loudness.

For instance, the opening notes, which are hints of the sonic landscape to come, are so loud that one wants to duck! Dausgaard, on the other hand, gives those opening lines so little energy that they take on an eerie intensity that turns them into whispers begging the question: where are we heading?

Thus, when Mahler launches us from this quiet searching into the opening theme, the effect is so rich, so warm, and so satisfying that the listener surrenders all anxiety and

floats away in bliss. This melody is an ear worm to die for!

There are two instances where I prefer the Ormandy recording. First, the famous bass drum of the Philadelphia Orchestra has a warmer sound, making the impact of the repeated drum strokes of the last two movements more satisfying. But perhaps the dryer sound of Seattle’s drum is appropriately scarier? You decide. Second, the excellent strings of the Seattle Symphony are nonetheless no match for the sumptuous intensity of the Philadelphia strings when Mahler launches into the final, exultant statement of the last movement. Truly hairraising!

Then there’s Dausgaard’s supreme mastery of Mahler’s meaning and of his complex polyphony and orchestration. Every note makes its mark. The loud passages, unlike in the 1965 recording, never suffer a “traffic jam,” in which clarity is lost in sonic confusion. Even more important, Dausgaard miraculously conveys at every turn that the music is going somewhere. So taut is the fabric that those instances when Mahler dramatically breaks that flow have maximum impact. The clarity of his control of orchestral dynamics and textures is greatly aided by the spacious sound of this CD. It’s tempting to go on and on about the glories of this symphony, but the challenge of trying to convey in words what only the music itself can say is daunting. Even though this is a work that was completed over many years’ work by Deryck Cooke, this is nonetheless Mahler at his best. The richness of thematic material is as great or greater than in any of his other symphonies.

Get this CD (on the Seattle Symphony label) and be swept away!

The Dragon Lady returns

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer THE DRAGON LADY THEATRE OFF JACKSON Through July 30 Sara Porkalob has been extremely busy lately. She’s been acting and directing up a storm, despite fears of racist barriers in casting due to being an American of Filipino descent. She is a consummate performer, and I’ll bet, just on seeing her perform, that she’s got a bit of OCD tendency. Every detail is thought about and chosen carefully.

She first came to (non-school) notice in Seattle Public Theater’s 2013 production of Edith Can Shoot Things And Hit Them where she was part of a Gypsy Rose Lee Awardwinning ensemble. She was pitch-perfect as a young, uncertain teen, and brought all the pathos and humor out of her character.

She graduated from Cornish College of the Arts and put her training to good use immediately. She has a lovely singing voice, and lent that to a leading role in Hair at ArtsWest, and Godspell at Taproot Theatre. She was in Fast Company for Pork Filled Players, 4000 Miles at ArtsWest, Emma at Book-It Repertory, and Bunnies at Annex Theatre. Most recently, she was a Chinese spy in a terrific production at Café Nordo, To Savor Tomorrow. She recently directed a killer play by Seayoung Yim at Annex Theatre, Do It For Umma, that will be remounted at Theatre Off Jackson August 18-27 and I highly recommend it!

Through much of that time, she was working on and presenting a solo show about her family and her mysterious grandmother who is referred to as The Dragon Lady. She pre-

sented several iterations of one-hour pieces, developing first one hour and then a Part II, continuing to look for what was important in the story she was trying to tell.

Now, she’s at Theatre Off Jackson – a theater where solo shows are often celebrated and co-produced – with a fulllength version of The Dragon Lady with even more new material. The story always revolves around Grandma’s 60th birthday party where she’s hiding in the basement because she’s mad that she didn’t want a party and the family threw her one anyway.

This time, a big chunk of the story is about Grandma’s children, Sara’s mother and siblings. These siblings, we’re shown, had a tough life, and their mother was one of the main reasons. Dragon Lady, we learn, had an extremely tough life – tougher than her children, and indeed almost unbelievably difficult, as we learn in this production’s second act. Maybe that upbringing did not teach her proper mothering, and so while she apparently loves fiercely, she does so in a traumatizing way.

Porkalob brings together fascinating moments in the lives of her mother and siblings and then in the is-this-real? story of her grandmother to create a portrait of a life. She starts this story with a mother who has disappeared on her very young family of five!

Maria Porkalob, Sr.’s 13 year-old daughter, Maria Porkalob, Jr., has to take care of her four younger siblings, including a 4 month-old infant! And they’ve run out of food. So, 11(?) year old Ron finds a way to go begging for food in the most resourceful way possible. It turns out Mom (Sr.) has decided to just go on a jaunt to Sea World.

This is not a funny story, but it is told with that consummate skill that Porkalob is able to demonstrate as a solo perform-

er. She changes into each of her aunts and uncles at those young ages with lightning speed and the audience generally knows exactly which one is talking at all times.

In different configurations of the story, you might have met Dragon Lady before any of the rest of the family. Then, her daring, her spunk, her bravery, and her sheer unique character might win you over and allow you to forgive her faults of parenting a bit more easily. The choice here to start with the abandoned children and then later the adults trying to celebrate the birthday is a hard swallow to excuse Grandma.

Porkalob is still working on figuring out how much dysfunction to include – where bad behavior is truth, but is a real part of a fully-alive human, even as someone can be loved and lovable, as well. The development of this piece is not over and there will be another form of the story. In January

2017, she will be producing a cabaret and dinner version of The Dragon Lady at Café Nordo. That one may be more cover songs and probably a bit funnier.

But no matter which version you see, Porkalob’s ability to immerse herself into the characters of her relatives is fascinating, the story is amazing, and since everyone has clearly survived, and dare we think it, thrived, then we have to assume most of the trauma is in the past. Give yourself a treat and see this performer, either at TOJ or Café Nordo.

Celebrating 41 Years!

Energetic Nerve a game of frustrating implausibility

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer NERVE Now playing On the verge of graduation, Venus “Vee” Delmonico (Emma Roberts) dreams of leaving Staten Island to attend college at a prestigious art school in California. But with little money to pay the tuition, not to mention an overprotective mother, Nancy (Juliette Lewis), still grieving over the loss of Vee’s older brother barely a year prior, the 18-year-old is going to have to put those aspirations on hold. She’ll attend a local college and continue to live at home, not wanting to risk revealing her desires to her mom for fear doing so will only lead to tears, heartbreak and anger.

Yet a person can only take so much before they push back against the forces cast against them. When her outgoing, vivacious best friend Sydney (Emily Meade) jabs one too many times, Vee does the unthinkable, signing up to play a crazy, probably illegal one-of-a-kind online game called Nerve. A variation on Truth or Dare, users who decide to get involved in the action can win money by completing tasks set forth for them by the watchers. But what initially starts out as playful fun mixed with a little bit of joyful rebellion quickly turns into a sinister fight for survival, Vee and another fellow player, the mysterious, if handsome, Ian (Dave Franco), forced to team together if they hope to escape Nerve’s sinister grasp and continue with their lives with even an ounce of freedom.

I want to like Nerve, I really do. Franco is as charming as ever, the young actors portraying Vee’s friends, most notably Meade and “Parenthood” star Miles Heizer, are excellent and the direction by Catfish and Paranormal Activity 3

Before Facebook and Instagram, Manila Luzon and I were bosom buddies on Myspace and as much as the early years of social media would allow. I was drawn to her for obvious reasons – her resplendent face, statuesque features and ultra-glamazon persona, especially being from New York City. And of course, she was Filipino-American. There aren’t that very many Asian-American LGBTQ celebrities out there, and Luzon fit the right shoe(s)!

But Luzon wasn’t always dolled up to the nines. She knows how to have fun and play with her style – from corky to cookie.

She has the power to shut you up in awe or make you laugh out loud ‘til your tummy aches for more.

Fast forward to Snapchat and Pokémon Go, she remains the same beautiful creature I adored, but now at an even larger stage – from “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race Battle of the Seasons,” Luzon has consistently been a sweetheart and sure favorite with her Fanilas across the globe.

Fresh from her international whirlwind tour, Luzon returns to the US Mainland for more! Yet still between gigs, I catch up with Ms. Luzon. Here’s what transpired: Aleksa Manila: Without a doubt – you’re one of the busiest and sought-after queens from this world-phenomenon, we call “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Why do you think people love and adore you?

Manila Luzon: I have no idea, I’m just

filmmakers Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman is suitably energetic. Additionally, screenwriter Jessica Sharzer’s (“American Horror Story”) adaptation of Jeanne Ryan’s best-selling novel is spunky and charming, setting up the story quite nicely as it puts the building blocks in place for all the craziness and danger certain to transpire.

Best of all, Roberts is wonderful, delivering one of her better performances as she navigates through the emotional complexities inherent to her character’s journey, and as such it was exceedingly easy to care for Vee and hope she’d find a way to dig herself out of the hole she suddenly finds herself trapped within.

But while the first half of the movie is a giddy good time, at a certain point the inherent implausibility fueling things begins to take its toll. Once the nefarious nature of Nerve is revealed, at the point Vee discovers just how terrible her situation is, the fun has ebbed away to the point absurdity is all that remains. On top of that, the way things are resolved is boringly absurd, the supposed moralistic statement that I believe all involved are going for unintentionally laughable when push finally comes to shove. The payoff simply does not work, the accusations being levied against those watching the game, and thus the viewers taking in the movie as well, packing about as big a punch as a feather being wielded by a three-month-old infant.

For a little while, though, Nerve is something moderately special. The early portions depicting Vee’s insecurities, how they are coupled with her aspirations to pursue her artistic talents, those are wonderful. Better is the way they are juxtaposed with her relationship with Nancy, this mother’s emotional smothering of her beloved daughter completely understandable considering the mutual loss both have endured. All of this sets up the character perfectly, so when she decides to become a player in this not-soharmless game I couldn’t help but root for her

to cut loose, have some fun and discover that interior resolve others seem to see yet she herself stubbornly refuses to embrace.

Joost and Schulman keep the pace moving full speed ahead, and even when the narrative begins to spiral hopelessly out of control the pair still manage to craft a fair amount of kinetic intensity that’s absolutely undeniable. But while they’ve studied the Michael Mann meets David Fincher meets Nicolas Winding Refn playbook cover-tocover, their combined filmmaking bravado just isn’t enough to cover up the story’s more readily apparent shortcomings. The lunacy of it all, the way events play themselves out, no matter how glorious it all looks or how rapidly things are paced that doesn’t lessen the stupidity of it all a single ounce. The plan Vee and her conspirators concoct is too inane to take seriously, and as such the central point is relegated moot,

the power of the climactic reveal lessened to the point of insignificance.

In many ways, Nerve reminds me of an online, social media version of 1997’s The Game merged with other ’80s and ’90s teenage throwbacks as varied as Cloak & Dagger, Wargames, Gotcha! and Hackers, that initially mentioned Michael Douglas/Sean Peen surrealistic thriller most of all. Yet where that Fincher favorite crafted an otherworldly dreamscape planted firmly between the lands of fantasy and reality that allowed for its inherent implausibility to be diminished, this never happens as far as Joost and Schulman’s latest is concerned. As nice as certain components might be, as solid as the performances universally are, the movie simply doesn’t work, making it just another cinematic missed opportunity residing in a summertime multiplex already overflowing in them.

Aleksa Manila: You’re definitely a fan favorite from Season 3 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and Season 1 of “All Stars.” How do you keep the flame on fire?

Manila Luzon: I love the fans of drag. I’m a fan of drag! So I’m always very appreciative of my fans!

I’m always thinking of the true fans, about giving them a great show and a fun experience with my drag!

Aleksa Manila: With the international travels and non-stop gigs, how do you manage to keep drag and your personal life balanced?

Manila Luzon: It’s a lot of work keeping things balanced with work and my personal life. I love doing drag so much, it’s one of my biggest passions, but I earn my living from this so it can consume me sometimes.

I am getting better at separating the two. Not too much though, because after all, because people got to know the real me on TV, I still like to keep them updated on my daily experiences even out of drag. But only a little.

Aleksa Manila: With your legions of Fanilas, what’s the most memorable encounter? Any pet peeves?

Manila Luzon: I love my Fanilas. They have been so supportive all the time. I love when Fanilas create things for me. I’ve received some amazing portraits of myself, great pieces of art, some fantastic accessories they made themselves. I’m so lucky to have

such creative fans! Some I’ve even collaborated with them. I’ve met so many different kinds of people since I’ve been on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” but the thing that bugs me a lot when meeting fans is when they wants selfie right after a long flight and my hair is all messed up and my breath is gross. I’m not at my finest.

Aleksa Manila: On a serious note, what do you prefer – live singing or lip syncing for your life?

Manila Luzon: I love doing both.

I enjoy the art of lip syncing, I get to make crazy faces when I’m pretending my voice is that of a big black woman. I love live singing too because with a mic I have another tool to connect with the audience. Besides I need to promote my new songs.

Aleksa Manila: Without being too personal, why did you move coast to coast from the City of Lights (NYC) to LA? Was it for love or fame?

Manila Luzon: I had lived in NYC for 10 years and I got what I needed from the city. I was traveling so much and it made more sense to come home to a place more relaxed. And because of a guy who’s now my boyfriend. Oh yeah!

Aleksa Manila: You keep delighting us in the Northwest. Is Seattle your ultimate favorite spot?

Manila Luzon: Haha, sure! Favorite of all time!

Aleksa Manila: You’re also a Leo… what makes you ROAR? Any special birthday wish(es) you can share with us?

Manila Luzon: I love to create things but the Leo in me loves to show it off. That’s why I’m so damned good. It’s my birthday, but I have everything I ever wanted!

Aleksa Manila: What can your Seattle Fanilas look forward to at this year’s LEO Party?

Manila Luzon: You’ll have to come to Neighbours Nightclub on Sunday August 14th and find out!

Aleksa Manila: What’s next for Manila Luzon? She seems to already have it all!

Manila Luzon: I have plenty! I am releasing the new music video to my latest song “Ovahness” soon. I’m really excited about this video. It’s been in the works for a while directed my talented friend from Ireland, Tony Webster AKA Big Bad Llama and we are excited to release it on YouTube.
