Phillip Phillips feels right at home with Southern food, gay fans, and playing his music on stage

The highly-rated reality TV series helped launch the careers of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, and that hot guy with the same first and last names, Phillip Phillips. The Atlanta native won the 11th season of the show, turning him into an overnight star who scored an instant top 10 hit with “Home,” a song that was used in multiple TV ads and during coverage of the 2012 London Olympics. To date, the music video for that single has received over 46 million views on YouTube.

Phillips has been very busy since his breakthrough, performing sold-out concerts from coast to coast and releasing two well-received albums, The World from the Side of the Moon and Behind the Light, not to mention touring with big acts, including Matchbox Twenty and John Mayer. Kind of. It’s actually only been five years, though it feels like decades ago. The pop giant’s previous appearance was at the Paramount Theatre on August 12, 2011, opening the show with “Hometown Glory” and exiting with a pair of songs from her Grammywinning album 21, “Someone Like You” and “Rolling in the Deep.” This time, she’s performing two concerts at a much larger venue, Key Arena, and she has another album under her belt, the multi-platinum 25.

“Adele Live 2016” kicked off February 29 at Belfast’s SSE Arena and completed its European run in late June. The North American leg of the tour began earlier this month in Minneapolis and will stop in 18 US cities and three in Canada, and finishes up in Mexico City. She recently announced an Australian extension of the tour for 2017.

Reached via email, perhaps from his hotel room or tour bus, or after taking a long, hot shower (let that image dance around in your head), Phillip Phillips took some time to speak with SGN. Here’s what he had to say when he stepped into The Music Lounge.

Albert Rodriguez: What comes to mind when you hear the word “Seattle”?

Phillip Phillips: When I hear the word “Seattle,” I think great music, great food, and the coolest market.

Rodriguez: Can you talk about your performance at Woodland Park Zoo? How long will your set be, will you duet with Matt on any songs, do you include any covers?

Phillips: I normally play about 75-minute sets on this tour. Matt and I have shared the stage a few times, and you never know, we might share it again in Seattle. I include covers sometimes, but the set is different each night.

Rodriguez: For anyone who’s never seen you in concert before, describe a Phillip

Adele’s superstar success took flight in 2009 with the release of “Chasing Pavements,” the second hit from her debut album 19. “Hometown Glory” was actually the leadoff single, but it only received radio airplay overseas. Though she had already made a name for herself, it was the Londoner’s sophomore offering 21 that bolstered her to global fame. To date, Adele has sold over 100 million records around the world, easily putting her on the list of the best-selling artists of all time. Not bad for a woman who doesn’t turn 30 for a couple more years.

From her earliest days, Adele has aligned herself with the LGBT community. In 2011, she discussed a teenage boy thanking her for helping him come out to his best friend and a guy he had a crush on, also gay, in an interview with The Advocate. In an interview last year with Time magazine, the power vocalist spoke positively about the remote possibility of her young son being gay. “I can’t wait to know who his best friends are going to be, who his girlfriend

Phillips live show: is there singing, dancing, what’s the energy like?

Phillips: A Phillip Phillips live show includes a lot of funny dancing, tons of singing, and a jamming good time.

Rodriguez: Will you be playing with a full band, or is it an acoustic show?

Phillips: I will be playing with a full band. I occasionally play one or two songs acoustically.

Rodriguez: If I wanted to buy you a drink at a bar, what would you order?

Phillips: I would drink any whiskey.

Rodriguez: If we were to raid your tour bus, what would we find?

Phillips: If you raided my tour bus, you would find a bunch of food, clothes, and probably a lot of sleeping people.

Rodriguez: You’re from the South, known for many things, including Southern cooking. What is your favorite homecooked meal?

Phillips: My favorite home-cooked meal is cube steak, mashed potatoes with gravy, and butter beans. My wife also makes a mean 12-layer chocolate cake that I dream about.

Rodriguez: Are you comfortable with having gay male fans, who love your music and appreciate your handsome looks?

Phillips: I am comfortable having fans from all walks of life. The beauty of music is that it is for everyone.

Rodriguez: Does songwriting come naturally to you, or is it something you really have to focus on when it’s time to record a new album?

Phillips: Songwriting is a funny thing. It comes easily sometimes, and other times it is a difficult process. It can be hard to get the right message across in the best way.

Rodriguez: We’re both Virgos: your birthday is September 20, mine is September 22. What was the coolest birthday party you can remember? (by the way, happy early birthday to you!)

Phillips: Ah, thank you. Happy early birthday to you, too. I have had some good birthdays. My 23rd birthday I was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and celebrated with over 90,000 people at Rock In Rio. I would say that is a pretty hard one to top.

A month ago, while performing in Antwerp, Adele burst into tears as she dedicated her show to the victims of the Orlando massacre. “The LGBTQ community, they’re like my soulmates since I was really young, so I’m very moved by it,” she told a fan-packed stadium.

Both concerts at Key Arena sold out almost immediately when tickets went on sale in December. There is no supporting act booked for this tour, at least that I’m aware of, so expect Adele to go onstage close to the scheduled showtime. The performance will include about 18 songs from her catalog, including all the top hits. And if you’re late (just letting you know), you’ll miss out on hearing one of her biggest ballads; do give yourself enough time to get to the arena and locate your seats by 8 p.m.

Tension-filled Infiltrator a solidly absorbing real-life thriller

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE INFILTRATOR Now playing After a major bust leaves him injured, Federal Agent Robert “Bob” Mazur (Bryan Cranston) could have retired with full benefits. But the veteran undercover operative has a new idea, one that could snare a number of major players in the world of international drug smuggling and money laundering. He wants to hurt the Columbian cartels where it matters most to them, in the pocketbook, and even with his long-suffering wife Evelyn (Juliet Aubrey) urging him to call it a career, Bob just wouldn’t feel good about himself if he didn’t see this job all the way through until the end.

Working with a new partner, freewheeling undercover operative Emir Abreu (John Leguizamo), the pair quickly find themselves climbing the ladder of Columbian and Panamanian bigwigs, including Pablo Escobar confidant Roberto Alcaino (Benjamin Bratt). With the help of rookie Kathy Ertz (Diane Kruger), forced to pretend to be his amorous fiancé after a monetary slip of the tongue on Bob’s part, the veteran agent discovers he’s actually starting to like Roberto and his lovely wife Gloria (Elena Anaya). But the job still comes first, and friendship can’t be a part of the equation, and if Bob or his team thought they were going to ensnare game this big without suffering a few bumps and bruises during the hunt they’d have been dead wrong.

Infiltrator: My Secret Life Inside the Dirty Banks Behind Pablo Escobar’s Medellín Cartel, director Brad Furman’s The Infiltrator is a strong return to the form he confidently displayed with 2011’s The Lincoln Lawyer and somehow lost hold of with 2013’s disastrous Runner Runner. Working from a detailed, highly literate script by his mother Ellen Brown Furman, the filmmaker displays a kinetic versatility organizing and shaping all of the based-on-fact thrills and chills that drive this story to its conclusion. While he isn’t reinventing the genre wheel, Furman still manages to craft a film that captures the attention right from the get-go all the same, and as such this tidy little suspenser had me suitably captivated for all of its briskly paced 127 minutes.

Still, it does feel like in some ways the director’s latest could have delivered even more of a punch. I’m normally one to applaud brevity, but in the case of The Infiltrator less isn’t necessarily more. The relationship between Bob and Kathy could have carried some additional weight, and as such their blossoming friendship with Roberto and Gloria doesn’t build to the type of shattering conclusion it so richly deserves. The intricacies of the financial puzzle the agents are deconstructing can also be more than a little confusing, and as such keeping track of who is who and what part they play in all of this drug-fueled madness is oftentimes difficult. As for supporting player Joseph Gilgun (playing a mob enforcer who owes Bob some sort of debt and so joins him in attempting to bring down Escobar’s cartel), I kept feeling like there was far more to the story than the movie was given the oppor-

tunity to tell, his character too ephemeral to matter yet too intriguing to comfortably dismiss.

It is a testament then to just how universally strong the acting is and how grand the set pieces Furman engineers are that the film ends up mattering near as much as it does. There is a phenomenal sequence involving Leguizamo dealing with his primary snitch, a sequence that builds in electrifying intensity as it hurtles towards its conclusion. There’s also a sensational moment where Cranston is blindfolded and take to a secret location to meet with another of Escobar’s lieutenants (terrifically underplayed by Yul Vazquez), the extents the Columbians go to ensure he’s someone they think they can trust chilling to the core.

Amy Ryan steals scenes left and right as the hard-changing agent in charge of the operation, while Oscar-winner Olympia Dukakis pops up in a delightful cameo as one of Bob’s relations who just so happens to be the perfect person to help him cement his growing relationship with the pensive, intelligently cautious Roberto. As for Bratt, he’s superb, delivering his best performance since 2009’s La Mission, maybe even surpassing his Emmy-nominated work on “Law & Order,” the avalanche of emotional cadences he circles through during the climax extraordinary.

But as good as they all are (and I haven’t even mentioned Kruger or Aubrey, both of whom are divine), unsurprisingly the reason to get excited about all of this is Cranston and, to a slightly lesser extent, Leguizamo, both of whom are just marvelous. The former inhabits Bob with ease, while the latter makes, not just the most of his limited screen time, but also gives one of the finest performances of his entire career. Together they make for an invigorating Mutt and Jeff team, their insecurities and apprehensions of being forced to work with one another authentically giving way over time to a form of mutual understanding and respect that’s just about perfect.

Like he did with The Lincoln Lawyer, Furman shows a knack for this kind of down-and-dirty genre fare. While the movie never gets as deep as I maybe would have liked it to, that doesn’t make it any less absorbing. Mazur’s story just defies belief, the fact it all happened, he and his team’s efforts leading to one of the biggest international drug busts in recent history, comes close to blowing the mind. All of which helps make The Infiltrator a memorable, tension-filled thriller well worth the price of a ticket, one I’d be happy to give a second look to sometime in the very near future.

EMMYS 2016: RuPaul, Sarah Paulson, Ryan Murphy, Lily Tomlin lead LGBT nominees for TV’s big award

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer The best ever field of nominees was revealed for the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards on Thursday morning, among them several LGBT actors, directors, writers and TV show hosts.

RuPaul scored his very first Emmy nomination, under his professional name RuPaul Charles, in the category of Outstanding Host For A Reality or RealityCompetition Program for his work on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” He’ll compete against two other LGBT performers: Jane Lynch, recognized again for “Hollywood Game Night,” and Tim Gunn, co-host of “Project Runway.”

Sarah Paulson nabbed double nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie for her stellar portrayal of Marcia Clark in “The People v.

O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” and Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie for her role in “American Horror Story: Hotel.” She is the heavy favorite in the former category.

Ryan Murphy, an Emmy winner for “Glee” and “The Normal Heart,” is seeking

a third award for directing the episode “The Ashes of Tragedy” from the mini-series “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” which earned a whopping 22 nominations total, including Outstanding Limited Series. Murphy is the creator and producer of the FX program, which debuted a year ago as “American Crime Story.”

Lily Tomlin received a second nod for starring in “Grace and Frankie,” a Netflix series centered on a pair of older women abandoned by their Gay husbands; she’s up for Outstanding Lead Actress in A Comedy Series. Also earning a second nomination is Tituss Burgess, who performed with the Seattle Men’s Chorus earlier this year, recognized for his supporting role on “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”

The Transgender-themed series “Transparent” is again in the running for Outstanding Comedy Series, as well as cast members Jeffrey Tambor (Lead Actor-Comedy), Judith Light and Gaby Hoffman (Supporting Actress-Comedy), plus an Outstanding Guest Actor In a Comedy Series nod for Bradley Whitford, who won last year, and Outstanding Guest Actress In a Comedy Series nomination for Melora Hardin.

Taproot present Big Fish

By Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer BIG FISH TAPROOT THEATRE Through August 13, 2016 Taproot Theatre almost always has a summer musical. They are, pretty dependably, “feel good” musicals with a heartwarming center. Such a feel-good, heartwarming musical is on tap now. Big Fish is by reliable composer, Andrew Lippa, with book (script) by John August. It’s based on the novel by Daniel Wallace and the movie of the same name, also written by John August.

The musical did get to Broadway in 2013, but didn’t last very long. It’s much more suited to being in a small, more unassuming performance house. In that sense, Taproot is perfect for it.

The story, if you’ve missed both the book and the movie, is about a travelling salesman, Edward Bloom (Chris Ensweiler), who doesn’t make a very good dad, we’re told, but tries to make up for it by telling fantastical stories to his son, Will (Young Will, Teigun Pesce; older Will, Tyler Todd Kimmel).

The bulk of the presentation, then, is taken up with Edward’s fantastical stories of a mermaid who wants feet (Carly Squires Hutchinson), a witch who tells Edward how he will die (Sarah Russell), a giant who joins the circus with him (Nick Watson), the ringmaster (Chris Mayse), and some of his small-town classmates (Jed Mathre, Casey Raiha). And there’s a cheerleader girlfriend

of sorts, Jenny Hill (Margaret Lamb), who pines for him as he happily leaves town.

Will Bloom grows up and brings home a young bride (Emily Shuel) to Edward and the stalwart woman he marries, Sandra (Chelsea LeValley). Will is resentful of the stories because he feels like he doesn’t know the real Edward. He thinks he’s found a possibly disreputable secret and endeavors to dig it up. Of course, he doesn’t expect what he eventually finds.

This is not a very exciting musical. It goes rather directly “to the heart” and will affect some people that way, even if you feel a bit manipulated. The fantasies are sparsely presented on a rather bare stage, but that’s a fine choice for a muted story.

LeValley does major lifting as both the young, entrancing woman Edward immediately falls for (as part of an adorable singing trio), and as the more mature mother. She gets a couple of great zingers with side-eye that are great jokes. Kimmel and Shuel are lovely as the newly married couple.

Young Mr. Pesce already displays great presence on stage. Lamb goes all in for the cheerleader who loves forever. Russell gets a standout song.

Ensweiler has to wear a lot of hats. Some of them fit. He’s a scampish, high-energy man, as Edward, who has to capture the flim-flam to look like a not-so-great dad.

He has to dance a bit and sing a lot. The hat that keeps falling off is the singing one.

You can see why he got cast, to a certain extent, but this musical is not so compelling that you can overlook a tepid-voiced main character.

The musical fits the kind of choice Taproot likes to make, but it’s not a very good musical. The songs are ok, the story is ok, but it’s not very exciting. Here, the musicians are not on stage or visible, which also hurts the actors – there doesn’t seem to be a TV monitor for them to be led by musical director Edd Key. The music is overly lush. Lippa’s score overdoes it toward the soap opera style, when the musical calls for a much simpler rendition. So, if you can’t see the musicians, it sounds more like pre-recorded stuff that doesn’t go with the musical.

However, there are a significant number of people for whom this is just their summer cup of (ice) tea! It’s not stressful or demanding and you know in the end it will turn out ok.

This is a retro show with favorite songs of the ’60s and ’70s – and a few more modern ones from Tyler (Andrew Murray) and Sam (Devin Bannon). But it’s got plenty of 2016 twists (see what I did there?) where the culture cluelessness of the ’60s is updated for ’16 sensibilities. So, instead of all straight couples, we get Tyler and Sam who are a committed Gay couple. But Sam wants a “hall pass” so they can have a threesome with a (gasp) woman! Will Tyler go along as his “guy” friend?

They set their sights on Marsha (Varsha Raghavan) and Sandy (Katya Davida Landau), who don’t notice the men are Gay, so Sandy goes along with the adventure. Marsha takes a walk on the beach where she saves famous Jonny Greenwood (Andre Nelson) from being eaten by … a hammerhead shark! Of course, then she thinks she deserves a bit more of his attention, but he’d rather just be left alone.

The rest of the resort crew, Bubblegum (Sydney Tucker), Carmen (Gabriela Scherrer), and Gidget (Tanya Brno), help with the talent show. They lend some surprising choices to the show, which enlivens the fun.

There are audience participation opportunities. Do you like to limbo? What about dancing in the aisles? Go with a fun attitude and you’ll clap along and hoot and holler and drink. The VIP dinner menu has a terrific tiki drink – you’ll probably wish it came a lot earlier in the evening though, since it packs a punch and it’s pretty close to when you have to leave the beach and drag home.

You do have a choice of whether to get the full meal deal. You can go and see the show and have most of the fun, order great summer drinks from the fully loaded bar, and have a great time.

The VIP menu starts off with tiny drinks like a mini margarita or a mini pina colada, and unlimited chips and dip. Their stonefruit (tastes like mango) chutney is a fun way to dip. There is a pork dish or a veggie skewer on top of fried rice cakes, which were crunchy and satisfying (though I wish the cakes had a sauce or seasoning to dip ’em in). Dessert, besides the enormous tiki drink, is a tiny chocolate/mint tart.

If it’s been a tense and difficult few weeks, this might well be the way to lighten the load and escape to where the dilemma is: to twist standing up or in your chair! Just stay away from that hungry hammerhead!

Celebrating 41 Years!

continued from cover for two years as a boy soprano, singing at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, on two recordings for Angel EMI, and all over the world. Despite this exposure, I was still really shy. I didn’t start to open up until high school. I went to go see Sunset Boulevard on Broadway with my family and got the cast album for Christmas. I wore that CD out! I would act out the entire story in front of the mirror playing all the characters from beginning to end. So embarrassing!

Then in college, I took an acting class and the acting bug got me. Thank you, Kim Rubinstein!

Andrews-Katz: Despite being born in Boston you were raised in England. How does the English view on and support for the theatre differ from American views?

Leisy: I think the main difference between the British and American theatre is government funding. London has a national treasure aptly named The National Theatre where actors, directors and designers can risk pushing the theatrical envelope with each of their government subsidized productions. The British are afforded the luxury of taking risks. We are not able to do that in the U.S. because there are no real subsidies, and too much painstakingly raised money is at stake. I sound like such an Anglophile, but in England, going to the theatre is more common practice. It’s more akin to going to the cinema. And I think their lower ticket prices definitely have something to do with that!

Andrews-Katz: You were in the comedic spoof The 39 Steps. How did that prepare you for the quick comedy of A Gentleman’s Guide…?

Leisy: That was the perfect preparation for A Gentleman’s Guide... The styles are very similar and Monty Navarro has a very similar arc to The 39 Steps’ Richard Hannay. Hannay, like Monty, becomes the unexpected “hero” who also happens to remain on stage for the entirety of the show while larger than life characters come and go. Both roles are mini marathons and so much fun!

Andrews-Katz: In L.A., you were part of a cabaret show called “Songs We Shouldn’t Sing from Roles We’ll Never Play.” What was the song/role you performed and what made the song appealing for you?

Leisy: I sang “Unusual Way” from Nine partly because it is such a departure from our show, stylistically. I just got to stand there and sing a simple, poignant lyric.

Then for something completely different, and equally satisfying, we boys put on high heels and sang “My Body” from The Life, portraying gritty NYC hookers in the 1980s!

Andrews-Katz: How did your audition for the Broadway company of Gentleman’s Guide come about?

Leisy: My audition process spanned a year! I have a lot of serendipity to thank for being cast. I heard about the show during its infancy, while they were trying to find the right venue for the out-of-town tryout.

I was then coaching audition material with the composer, Steven Lutvak. Years later, I ran into Steven at a restaurant the week before the Gentleman’s Guide Broadway opening. He told me that if the show were to run, I would be great for it. I was invited to the Broadway opening through one of the producers. I made it my mission that night to get myself into the show.

Months later, the team got together to audition possible replacements in the Broad-

way company. Steven put me on the audition list and I flew myself back to NYC for the audition from rehearsals for Pride and Prejudice at Cincinnati Playhouse. Nothing came from that audition. About 9 months later, I bumped into Steven Lutvak. He asked me if I would be willing to tour. I said yes and a couple of months later, I found myself at the final callbacks for the tour.

The rest is history!

Andrews-Katz: Since A Gentleman’s Guide… has so many quick costume changes and character switches, have any of the actors gotten it wrong and gone on as a different character or costume than called for?

Leisy: It’s shocking, but that hasn’t happened yet! I’m sure it happened to someone during tech rehearsals. But I’ve definitely started to put the wrong costume on before.

Thankfully, I caught myself before it was too late!

Andrews-Katz: Aside from being a gypsy, what are some of the challenges of traveling on the road with a Broadway company?

Leisy: Being on a national tour has a lot of benefits (getting to explore the country, save money, etc.), but I think the hardest part for most of us is the fact that we’ve left loved ones behind. Long distance relationships are hard, let me tell you. Being on tour is different than working in New York.

There, the show is just a part of our day. We get to see our friends and have more of a separation between work and play. On tour there isn’t a delineation, so it’s all about finding the right balance for you.

Andrews-Katz: Which do you think are more popular, reality musicals (Ragtime, Spring Awakening) or fluff musicals (Mamma Mia!, A Gentleman’s Guide…)?

Leisy: No offense to Mamma Mia!, but I wouldn’t put Gentleman’s Guide in the

same category. Our show is light in tone, but it is quite witty and is masterfully realized, in my opinion. I think, on the road, recognizable titles and known commodities are the most popular. Gentleman’s Guide is less recognizable, but we fill touring houses, luring audiences with our Tony Award for Best Musical and the fact that it’s hilarious. Word of mouth is also good for us. In New York, I think people are more swayed by reviews. A rave in the NY Times is like gold and can keep a show running. Same thing goes for Tony Awards. I don’t think there is a correlation between the type of show and its popularity. I think it depends on the show’s content and if it finds the right audience at the right time.

Andrews-Katz: If you could play any role – regardless of any limitations – what would it be and why that role?

Leisy: That high school student in front of the mirror would like a shot at Norma Desmond, I’m sure! In a more realistic world, I would love to play King George in Hamilton. That show is not going away any time soon and I think I would have a blast doing it!

to rush out and watch any adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel, the components that seem to fuel each and every one of his stories ones I’ve discovered I’ve never been all that particularly fond of.

It happens with sequels and remakes, too. A lot of times it’s hard not to wonder if the world actually needs another Spider-Man reboot, that heading back to Isla Nubar for Jurassic World is a great way to spend one’s precious time or that Matt Damon returning for Jason Bourne is done for artistic reasons and not something akin to a quick cash grab. But whereas bloated megabudget misfires like Independence Day: Resurgence help add fuel to this fire of early apprehension, beautifully realized winners like The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Creed and Star Wars: The Force Awakens showcase just how silly those pre-judgments can be. Heck, as amazing as the trailers were, it’s not like many, myself included, didn’t wonder what the heck George Miller was doing when he decided to head back into the wasteland thirty years after the fact for Mad Max: Fury Road. Ten Oscar nominations and six wins later, I think we can all safely say it worked out for him and his film just fine, the sequel proving to be a bona fide sensation with critics and audiences alike.

With director Paul Feig’s new take on Ghostbusters, the kneejerk reaction is to wonder why this property needed to be resurrected or rebooted in the first place, the 1984 classic with Billy Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Sigourney Weaver and Ernie Hudson not exactly showing its age.

Same time, if one is going to remake a classic cinematic property, if they are going to tackle an iconic franchise, Feig and his The Heat collaborator Katie Dippold certainly

ential at times to its Ivan Reitman-helmed predecessor, this is a fun, frisky and most of all funny reworking of the familiar tale, throwing caution to the wind as it sends an entire new set of paranormal investigators into the fray, all of whom prove to be more than capable of answering the call when the phone rings for assistance.

Taking basic elements of Aykroyd and Ramis’ original scenario, Feig and Dippold don’t necessarily flip the script as much as the casting of four actresses, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, might initially lead one to believe. While the origin elements are little different, what primarily still brings the team together is the threat of paranormal chaos running rampant throughout New York, everything culminating in a moment of solidarity and triumph where the Ghostbusters are the only one’s capable of saving the day. Yet Feig and Dippold ground things in modern sensibilities and realities that are both comforting and controversial, asking a handful of very tough social questions under the guise of green, slime-filled comedic silliness.

After a falling out ten years prior, childhood friends and accomplished research scientists Erin Gilbert (Wiig) and Abby Yates (McCarthy) find themselves thrust back together when a supernatural event at a local tourist attraction draws their attentions. With the aid of the latter’s associate Jillian Holtzmann (McKinnon), a tech wizard with a knack for designing and creating the most marvelous of inventions, the pair quickly come to the realization that, ghosts aren’t just real, but they actually have the tools to catch them. But their paranormal endeavors jump to the next level when transit authority clerk Patty Tolan (Jones) enlightens them to strange goings on in the subways, her insight into the city’s rich, and

It’s easy to figure out what happens next. The group start up a business, they publicly hunt some ghosts, end up getting ridiculed for their efforts, uncover a sinister supernatural plot that will devastate the Big Apple, confront a not-so-befuddled Mayor (a sublimely dopey Andy Garcia) about what they’ve learned and end up arriving at just the right moment to save everyone in the city from annihilation. Again, while the names have changed and the themes are updated, the basic narrative elements remain the same, and as such precious few story beats come as a surprise.

And that’s okay because, exactly like the 1984 film, Feig is more concerned with building character and story than he is anything else, going out of his way to make sure Erin, Abby, Jillian and Patty are complex, fully-realized human beings and not just walking talking punchlines good for a couple of extra belly laughs. These are real women with real problems, ones who use their brains to get the job done, knowing they are just as capable of ascertaining the truth and coming up with solutions as any man might think themselves to be. What’s more, they enjoy themselves, and whether it’s testing out Jillian’s fantastical gadgets in an alley or facing down a class-four vapor at an Ozzy Osbourne concert, these women are ready to face down whatever hardship might end up coming their way.

The movie, much like Jurassic World and Star Wars: The Force Awakens before it, is almost too referential to its ancestor, fitting in various callbacks to the ’84 film that can feel awkward or forced depending on when they’ve been inserted into the plot.

Also, the film’s villain, a nebbish nobody named Dean (Steve Higgins) with nondescript designs on seeing the world burn, just isn’t good, a total non-presence who adds little if any value to whatever scene he hap-

last year, this Ghostbusters has energy and vitality to spare. More than that, it shows that there is more than enough juice in this story and this franchise to warrant a new version. Feig directs with confidence, his and Dippold’s sharply measured script is filled with a number of exuberantly exhilarating high points and both Wiig and McCarthy prove to be exemplary stand-ins for Murray and Aykroyd. Even better are Jones and McKinnon, these two sketch comedy dynamos stealing scenes left and right as they bring their two intriguing, craftily inspired characters to effervescent life. They are both stars in the making, the latter in particular, showcasing a go-for-broke evanescence that’s so impressive it borders on being Oscar-worthy.

There’s plenty more to love, not the least of which is the crafty way Feig utilizes cameo appearances from many of the original cast members as well as an inspired bit of loopy silliness on the part of Chris Hemsworth (portraying the team’s flighty, if physically well put together, receptionist Kevin). If this Ghostbusters isn’t perfect, it’s still a wonderful reinvention that’s as entertaining and as it is fun to watch. More than that, it celebrates the charms of the original while also intelligently forging a fresh path new generations of moviegoers are sure to be delighted with. If studios are going to continue mining their catalogs for fondly remembered favorites they feel are in need of a remake, reboot or sequel, Feig and company have certainly delivered the template as to how best to do it. Who you gonna call? These ladies. And right away.

Mike and Dave proves Anna and Aubrey deserve better scripts

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES Now playing Brothers Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave Stangle (Zac Efron) are fun to be around, their hard-partying, go-for-broke antics amusing everyone they come into contact with. Only problem, they also manage to inadvertently wreck every family gathering they are a part of, and with that being the case younger sister Jeanie (Sugar Lyn Beard) orders the two to not arrive at her Hawaiian wedding stag. If they do? She’s given their father Burt (Stephen Root) permission to send them packing, and considering just how much the young woman loves and adores her brothers this is the last thing she wants to happen.

In need of dates for the wedding, Mike and Dave go on a quest to find the perfect women to join them in Hawaii for Jeanie’s nuptials. When Alice (Anna Kendrick) and Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza) drop into their lives, they believe they’ve found them, the two ladies appearing to be, not just warm-hearted and emotionally genuine, but also just the type of smart, successful and independent go-getters their entire family will approve of. So it’s off to the Hawaiian Islands for all four of them, Mike and Dave excited to be following through on Jeanie’s request certain her wedding is about to go off without a single solitary hitch.

Of course, that’s not what happens in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. Alice and Tatiana are not sweet-natured, twinklyeyed girls next door. The two male Stangle children almost can’t help themselves when stupidity and chaos come calling. It’s the type of raunchy, go-for-broke comedic sce-

nario R-rated tales of absurdity like this are built on, director Jake Szymanski and writers Andrew Jay Cohen and Brendan O’Brien (the pair behind both Neighbors flicks) not skimping in their quest to shock, offend and hopefully produce a theatre overflowing in laughter.

Which makes my silence during the promo screening disappointing. I didn’t respond to this story, didn’t care about Mike or Dave, watching them be so idiotically stupid not doing anything for me. The pair of numbskulls never become fully-formed characters. They’re dimwits, nothing more, nothing less, and with little else happening around them that captured my attention spending so much time with these two brothers turned out to be massively irritating.

Not that I didn’t laugh. I did. There are a handful of absurd, undeniably silly moments that got me to snicker. There is also an underlying sweetness to Cohen and O’Brien’s script that is moderately surpris-

ing, and even if there’s not a lot of story cohesion going on there is just enough of it to make sitting through the movie all the way to the end somewhat easy to do. As goofy and as raucous as things are, as stupid as it undeniably is, the fact the filmmakers have their hearts in the right place does go a fairly long way, and as such I imagine there will be a number of people who end up enjoying this madness far more than I did.

It helps that, as ill-conceived and at times ugly as their characters might be, Kendrick and Plaza are so gosh darn terrific watching them navigate their way through this rubbish can be magical. The two of them are a sparkling comedic team, riffing off one another with ease. Even when the filmmakers transform Alice and Tatiana into nothing more than male fantasy figures who are just as uncouth and socially inveterate as any man, the actresses are dynamite, Kendrick in particular, each lighting up the screen with a ferocious glee that’s inspiring.

But gosh did I find a lot of this tiresome.

Devine, who can be appealing as a minor player, adding jolts of comedic inspiration in films as wildly divergent as Pitch Perfect and The Final Girls, is close to unbearable as a lead, his one-note antics growing increasingly tiresome as events progress. As for Efron, he’s fine, as pretty much always, and his fearless abandon as it pertains to his willingness to look like a total dumbass is as commendable as ever. Yet he’s just as clearly going through the motions, having done this so many times now he’s on the verge of becoming typecast, and as such I got the feeling he was here to pick up a paycheck and very little else.

The slapdash quality of the filmmaking does no one any favors, the sloppiness in regards to narrative cohesion close to nonexistent. There is no sense of continuity, things fitting together more because they have to in order for events to keep cascading out of control more than because the story itself requires them to in order for one piece to snuggly fit with the another sitting right there next to it. While I won’t say Szymanski does a bad job of assembling this nonsense into a single whole, I just as clearly cannot claim his handling is as confident or as exact as it needs to be, and as such the film spirals outside of his control far too often.

With all that being so, it really is a testament to just how superb both Kendrick and Plaza are (and I should probably add Beard, too, as she’s pretty good as well) that I didn’t despise Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, let alone that I could end up taking away something moderately close to enjoyment out of any one part of it. While the movie isn’t something I can recommend, this does not mean I did not laugh, and for fans of the two actresses watching it isn’t the type of unendurable chore it far too easily could have been.

OUTBOUND: Lights, camera, Oahu!: Zac Efron comedy is the latest of many movies and TV shows filmed on the island

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer When Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates opened in theaters last weekend (see review in this week’s SGN), it was one among a long list of movies and TV series filmed on the beautiful island of Oahu, Hawaii.

The new comedy, starring Zac Efron, Adam Devine, Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza, was filmed last summer at the vacation hotspot with many of the scenes shot at the Turtle Bay Resort, situated on the North Shore. Based on real events, Efron and Devine play siblings who have a knack for ruining family events and as a result are asked to bring dates to their sister’s upcoming wedding. When the brothers place an ad for hot dates, what they get instead are hot messes, in the form of Kendrick and Plaza.

Specifically at Turtle Bay, scenes were filmed in the resort lobby, port cochere and its guest suites and villas. Additionally, the movie features the hotel’s oceanfront,

pool area, Kawela Bay and miles of sandy beach. Devine embarks on an on-site helicopter tour from the resort, where he enjoys a stunning aerial tour of Oahu. Efron and Devine are also filmed while shark diving with local expert Ocean Ramsey.

All of the actors stayed at Turtle Bay Resort, either in rooms or condos. Outside of filming, the actors spent time working out at the luxury hotel’s Nalu Kinetic Spa’s Fitness Center, which features panoramic ocean views and the latest cardiovascular equipment and fitness classes. The cast also walked the beach and hung out at Surfer, The Bar, a beloved watering hole inside the hotel. Efron also took private TRX lessons outdoors. I’m told the actors were extremely hospitable and polite, and some even took photos with staff (i.e. Efron with the entire housekeeping team). For more on the hotel, go to turtlebayresort.com.

A half hour from Turtle Bay is Kualoa Ranch, a 4,000-acre private nature reserve, working cattle ranch and tourist attraction that has been used for lots of film and TV

projects, including Jurassic Park, Jurassic World, “Lost,” Pearl Harbor, Godzilla, A Very Brady Sequel, The Karate Kid 2 and “Hawaii Five-O.” Most recently, Kong: Skull Island, starring Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson and John Goodman, was filmed at Kualoa Ranch; in fact, there was “action on the set” when I visited the attraction last November, so portions of the lush park were closed off. I highly recommend an excursion to Kualoa Ranch if vacationing on Oahu, whether you drive there yourself (about an hour from Waikiki), or go as part of a packaged tour. It’s a great place to visit for film and TV buffs, or anyone who loves natural, scenic surroundings. There are several tours to choose from, but the “Movie Site and Ranch Tour” ($45 adult, $35 children) is perfect for those wanting to recognize scenes from their favorite “Lost” episodes or Godzilla. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates isn’t the only movie shot at Turtle Bay. The

2008 rom-com Forgetting Sarah Marshall was also filmed on the property and included scenery from nearby La’ie Point.

A year ago, another romantic comedy, Aloha, opened in theaters with a star-studded cast, including Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Bill Murray and John Krasinski. It was filmed throughout the island, including prominent scenes of Hickam Air Force Base.

In 2011, The Descendants put Oahu in the spotlight because aside from standout performances by George Clooney and Shailene Woodley, the Oscar-nominated drama included great footage of the island, such as scenery from the Nu’uanu neighborhood, Honolulu Elks Lodge No. 616 and Queen’s Medical Center. The cast and crew stayed at the posh Kahala Hotel and Resort (kahalaresort.com), featured earlier this year in an LGBT tourism promotion that showed footage of a real-life wedding of a same-sex military couple.

my initial interest in Hawaii when the eightmember clan, plus family housekeeper Alice, flew to Oahu for the opening episodes of season four, aptly titled “Hawaii Bound.”

The Sheraton Waikiki Hotel (sheratonwaikiki.com) is where the Bradys stayed at during Mike’s business trip, and it’s rumored the actual cast stayed there as well.

Waikiki Beach, where Greg wipes out surfing, Diamond Head and various lookout

points on the island are included in the two episodes.

Although few people have probably seen it, the Heather Locklear-starring TV movie Flirting with Forty was partially filmed on Oahu, including scenes at The Royal Hawaiian (royal-hawaiian.com) and Waikiki Beach. The Lifetime chick flick revolves around a 40 year-old divorced mother of two who vacations alone in Hawaii and

falls for a young surfing instructor, and thus returns to the island afterwards to spend more time with him.

Punch-Drunk Love, 50 First Dates, Blue Hawaii, Blue Crush, The Big Bounce and the classic From Here to Eternity are other films that were shot on Oahu.

the artistic director of a theater for young people in Connecticut. The play includes three intelligent women, an intelligent girl, and a street-smart guy. Live Girls! Theater has been working on the script for quite a while, starting with public readings in 2013.

The big theme in the play is glacial ice, permafrost, and climate change. The small theme is whether you can do much about the big issues in life when your individual life is pretty much falling apart. Stevie (Hannah Ruwe) is a scientist, writing her

PhD thesis on permafrost. But something has driven her to leave her school and suddenly appear back in her small Virginia town, even before she’s called her mother to say she’s back.

Mom Clara (Alyson Bedford) finds out Stevie is back when she gets an emergency call from her friend Fiona (Maria Glanz) that Stevie has fallen into the frozen river and needs to be picked up and taken home.

Slacker-guy Fletcher (Jonah Martin) has saved Stevie from drowning, but Fiona has a feeling Stevie’s action might have been more than an accident.

All the females in this play have mass problems. Clara is an insecure, overly busy single mother who has no clue what to do with her rebellious, drug-taking, school-skipping teen daughter, Bella (Clara Hayes), much less how to talk to her adult daughter about her daughter’s life away.

Stevie doesn’t understand herself or her emotions, though it turns out she’s done some very inappropriate decision-making herself. Does that mean she might be suicidal and can’t bring herself to recognize it?

Fiona is struggling with her own mortality, and Bella feels like the neglected little sister whose big sister totally outclasses her own intellectual abilities. Fletcher seems like the only person who doesn’t quite care enough about much to worry.

Aside from selling drugs to kids like Bella, Fletcher’s other aim appears to be getting Stevie to sleep with him, while listening to him play guitar. Martin’s portrayal of this lackluster character gives him an odd

charm and he almost steals the show from the angst-ridden women.

The little theme, then, focuses on frozen emotions, thoughts unsaid or unshared, and how to thaw your family into a functioning unit. I’m not sure the play works all that well. There is a lot of smart writing, sometimes engaging dialogue, and actors who work hard at breathing life into their roles.

But much of it ends up feeling like a giant pity party. Ruwe is an engaging actor who almost makes us want to root for the home-girl, despite her prickly and inarticulate ways. She’s given long monologues about the permafrost which she delivers with every earnest morsel she can muster, but the diatribes about global warming fail to alarm us.

Though Stevie has spent years studying these phenomena, she apparently has no fucking idea what to do to stop any of the climate change. How unsatisfying. What good is studying how wrong something is without applying some real thought into what can be done instead?

By the end of the play, everyone is supposed to have attained better equilibrium, but the reasons are still murky and the outcome still cloudy.
