I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing a classic movie worth studying
SEATTLE PLAYWRIGHTS CIRCLE “SHORT SHORTS” THE PHOENIX THEATRE EDMONDS, WA July 17-26 There are a number of playwriting groups around town that toil together in support of new work. Some of them are kind of class-based, like Freehold Studios, and a spin-off of that group called Parley
(led by Freehold instructor Rebecca Tourino Collingsworth). Some of them are newer iterations where one applies to be part of a small group supported by a theater – Seattle Repertory’s Writers Group, and a musical writing group at 5th Avenue Theatre. Heading Inside Out – Peter Docter and Jonas Rivera on bringing Pixar’s latest marvel to life
by Gary M. Kramer SGN Contributing Writer I’VE HEARD THE MERMAIDS SINGING BY JULIA MENDENHALL ARSENAL PULP PRESS Lesbian film scholar Julia Mendenhall recently published her book I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing as part of the Queer Film Classic series published by Arsenal Pulp Press. Mendenhall’s book unpacks the various meanings and readings of Lesbian filmmaker Patricia Rozema’s quirky 1987 comedy. The film features Polly Vandersma (Sheila McCarthy), a self-described “person Friday” and amateur photographer, taking a temporary job at an art gallery run by Gabrielle St. Peres, who is known as The Curator (Paule Baillargeon). Gabrielle has a girlfriend, Mary Joseph (Ann-Marie MacDonald), which creates an unspoken love triangle. The film was a sleeper hit when it was released theatrically, but Mendenhall ad-

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer INSIDE OUT Now playing As of right now, Inside Out is my favorite film of 2015. The tale of an 11-year-old
girl, Riley, as told entirely by the five dominant emotions – Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust – working with one another for control residing inside her brain, the movie is a marvelously entertaining journey into the psyche. It is a fun, funny and visually see interview page 6
