She delivered everything a diehard fan could hope for and more: that voice, those legs, the irreverent banter peppered with a healthy dose of curse words and bawdiness. “Don’t I look fabulous?” she asked (and yes, she did look fab). “I’m a triumph of science…and fiction.” Bette hasn’t lost an ounce of humor or star power over time.

Her raw talent radiates with such ease that entertainers half her age look like lackluster slackers by comparison.

Though charismatic enough to carry a two hour, one-woman show all by herself, the Divine Miss M was supported by a 12-piece all star band and the latest incarnation of The Harlettes. “Nothing’s replaced here except my girls,” she explained.

“They used to be fact checkers at Fox News; I snatched them up and no one even knew they were gone.” The set was a skillfully paced romp through wartime radio hits (“I’ve Still Got My Health”) and spunky girl group classics (“Do You Wanna Dance?” and “Tell Him”) in support of her latest release It’s The Girls! Bette staples such as Yiddish song “Bei Mir Bist Du Schon,” “I Look Good,” and “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today” were also in no short supply as Bette switched skillfully between full-bodied soul and frisky frivolity.

The first tear-jerker moment came during a slowed-down, soulful version of TLC’s ‘90s ballad “Waterfalls.” Pausing to remark “Everything you need to know…you already do,” she delivered a foreboding cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Everybody Knows.”

But in the words of Bette herself, the showgirl must go on, and go on she did. Costume changes and some familiar characters appeared to brighten the mood, including Hocus Pocus-era Bette for “I Put A Spell On You” followed by “A Visit from Soph” capped by an Oscars-spoofing in memoriam tribute to Bette’s trademark mermaid character Delores DeLago.

The freewheeling commentary flew fast and furious between songs, as Bette (dressed in a retro-modern, pink A-line tunic dress for the first part of the show) whirled around, tap dancing and shaking a tail feather with the Harlettes until they pushed her – in true diva fashion – around the stage on her lip-shaped sofa as Bette jokingly lamented social media, her colossal failure in not monetizing her sex life, and other witty observations of pop culture.

“I lift your spirits like a boob job for the soul,” she declared. “So wonderful to see so many of you came, I’m amazed so many of my fans can still drive at night.” “Honey, you’ve got some miles on you, holy shit…” she teased a fan in the front row. To be harassed by Bette Midler would be the pin-

nacle of diva worship.

After a quick change to a dazzling red gown, Bette brought the show home with a reference to her “rock period” with “Beast of Burden.” Although the audience was refreshingly devoid of cell phones (it appeared they were politely discouraged by stage-front security), she relented before “The Rose,” encouraging the collective to “bring out their various Apple devices.”

The result was a spectacular starry light show from rafters to floor. “From A Distance” and “Stay With Me” finished the set. Of the final song, Bette recounted how she first sang it in 1978 – and how as most music does, the song’s meaning has evolved for her over time. Once it was a tale of unrequited love; today it makes her think of all the people who have moved on to points unknown – now lost, but never forgotten. It was a touching moment and unlikely there was a dry eye in the house.

Returning for one encore, Bette graciously declared her heartfelt thanks to all her fans for supporting her for all these years, sealing the sentiment with “Wind Beneath My Wings.” Going back to where it all began with “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” she came out from behind the curtain just one more time to restate her love and thanks before disappearing, a true showgirl to the last.

Favorite concerts on DVD & Blu-ray

by Rod Parke SGN A&E Writer I hate writing reviews of concerts and operas that I didn’t enjoy. So today I’m going to do just the opposite: revisit those favorite DVD/Blu-rays in which I find such joy that I return to them again and again.

These are discs that are perfect for repeated viewings...to share with friends and to remind oneself of just how glorious music and music-drama can be.

Next time I’ll cover operas, but this week I’ll limit myself to concerts and a recital: 1. Verdi’s “Requiem” conducted by Herbert von Karajan, with an unsurpassable quartet of Leontyne Price, Fiorenza Cossotto, Luciano Pavarottti, and Nicolai Ghiaurov – all in their prime and very young. Despite the age of the recording (1967), the sound is certainly good enough to convey the extreme dramatic nature and beauty of this sublime work.

2. Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion” conducted by Iván Fischer at the Concertgebouw (2012). This Blu-ray has sound quality so sublime that it matches that of the music itself. Soloists are all superb, although I have reservations about the Evangelist, sung with intelligence but rather white, unsupported tone by Mark Padmore. The “Erbarme dich” with a mezzosoprano soloist and a heavenly violin obbligato is utter perfection.

3. Mahler’s “Symphony of a Thousand” (#8) conducted by Gustav Dudamel in Caracas, Venezuela, in 2012.

This Blu-ray has the best recorded sound I have ever heard, and it perfectly captures not only a great performance of a fascinating work but also an utterly thrilling event.

and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, deliver a performance of unparalleled commitment and excitement.

Dudamel commands such amazing control over these huge forces that this super-complex work comes across with amazing clarity and power. The disc includes an excellent documentary about this event.

4. Beethoven, Boulez, and Bruckner: Salzburg Festival (2010) – Opening Concert conducted by Daniel Barenboim.

5. Bruckner’s “Symphony No. 5” conducted by Franz Welser-Möst at the Abbey of St. Florian, Linz, Austria. A truly inspired performance from a conductor I usually find rather cold, this live performance on DVD in DTS Surround Sound does a superb job of capturing the fabulous acoustic of this gorgeous cathedral without sacrificing any orchestral detail or warmth.

I used to have reservations about Bruckner’s most contrapuntal symphony, but this disc made me a fan.

The DVD includes an illuminating conversation with the conductor.

6. Evgeny Kissin: “The Gift of Music.” Included in this excellent bio-film about the great Russian pianist is a complete recital at the 1997 Promenade at the Royal Albert Hall. It’s a thrilling event and recital. As the DVD jacket explains, “This was the first Prom in the 103year history of the celebrated Promenade Concerts to be given by a solo recitalist, and it attracted the biggest audience in all of those 103 years: very nearly six thousand people.”

Much as I love experiencing operas live, with un-amplified voices that reach out and physically touch their listeners, the excellence of some of the modern DVD and Mahler’s “Symphony of a Thousad: #8 Blu-ray discs makes a strong case conducted by Gustav Dudamel for this medium, especially when Mahler described above, this Blu-ray is viewed on excellent sound systems and golden all the way through. Seattle Pride 2015: Divas Take the Hill turns 5 with a benefit for Seattle’s homeless youth

This year’s celebration continues its goal of supporting local nonprofits and small businesses by raising funds for Peace for the Streets by Kids from the Streets (PSKS), a Seattle-based 501(c)(3) serving homeless and at-risk youth and young adults.

Pride parades began as a political action, and as the LGTBQ community makes strides toward equality and protection from discrimination under the law, it is vital that Pride remain a force for positive change that supports vulnerable populations, not just a celebration of visibility. Many homeless youth also identify as LGBT and remain among the most invisible populations. Public services have a difficult time fulfilling the needs of each youth individually, creat-

ing a need for passionate, independent organizations like PSKS, which focuses on harm reduction and provides ready access to basic services to youth transitioning from homelessness, who are sometimes struggling with substance abuse and who may otherwise fall through the gaps.

Team Diva Real Estate has used business savvy and love of a good party to produce many benefits for arts and social justice over the years, including dance company zoe | juniper, Velocity Dance Center, Marriage Equality, Three Dollar Bill Cinema and more. Having also been long-time participants in UW’s international student hosting program and advocating among their own clientele for this service, Team Diva saw that the youth-driven program of PSKS was a natural fit for a partnership.

Of course, one of the ingredients which made this film so delightful was the excellent playing skill of Walt Strony, who is a well-known theatre organist who really knew how to utilize the stops on the Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ. The 89 year-old pipe organ was in perfect tune and performed magnificently as Walt put it through its paces. I thought it was interesting how a film made 95 years ago in 1920 that had no sound or dialogue and no color (except several scenes which were tinted) could still pack a theatre the size of The Paramount.

After the film ended, and after a rousing standing applause for the organist, Walt Stony, we attended the post-screening Cine Club which was held in the Paramount Bar Room just off the main lobby. McCarthy a comedic dynamo in enthusiastically silly Spy

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer SPY Now playing CIA analyst Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) has a good thing going. She’s the right-hand woman to superspy Bradley Fine (Jude Law), helping him navigate lethally destructive terrain populated by gunrunners, double agents and terrorists all looking to do him in. But when circumstances involving a stolen nuclear device and the daughter of a slain arms dealer, Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne), puts every CIA spy in jeopardy, Deputy Director Elaine Crocker (Allison Janney) comes to the conclusion it’s time to send a fresh, if inexperienced, face into the field.

Much to the consternation of pompous, loudmouth agent Rick Ford (Jason Statham), Susan volunteers for the assign-

ment. Making him even angrier, Crocker thinks it’s a good idea, allowing the analyst to assume a false identity in order to track notorious cutthroat and big money go-between Sergio De Luca (Bobby Cannavale) across Europe in hopes he’ll lead them to Rayna. But Susan is a far better spy than anyone wants to give her credit for being, especially Ford. When push comes to shove she’s terrific, and if everyone would leave her well enough alone she’ll likely nab the bad guy and recover the nuke before anyone knows it’s happened.

Melissa McCarthy is as big a talent as there is working today. She deserved her Oscar nomination for Bridesmaids. She held her own up next to Sandra Bullock in The Heat. She stole scenes left and right in a small, yet pivotal, part in the undervalued Bill Murray comedy-drama St. Vincent.

She even managed to turn execrable, stomach-churning comedies Identity Thief and

Tammy into modest successes (especially the former) due almost entirely to her star power alone, a fact that still boggles my mind far more than I should probably admit.

The great thing about Spy, a comedyaction-thriller hybrid that reteams her with writer/director Paul Feig for a third time and isn’t near as much a James Bond parody as one might initially suspect, is that it gives McCarthy a well-rounded, fully sculpted character that’s nearly on par with the nurturing single mother she portrayed in St. Vincent. While there are the requisite pratfalls, while references to the character’s physical appearance are made, they are not the end-all-be-all as far as the comedy is concerned. This is a smart and talented individual who knows how to do her job and does it better than most, trading on her intellect and her skills to see things through to the end.

This is wonderful for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it allows McCarthy to play an honest to goodness human being and not some foul-mouthed, uncouth hellion. While four-letter words are spoken – lots of them – they’re not uttered for shock value. Instead, much in the same way Peter Capaldi wove profane poetry with each and every one of his diatribes in In the Loop, Susan does the same thing here, coming up with creatively vulgar ways to ingratiate herself next to Rayna.

More than that, though, she also spends just as much time revealing her character’s heart, her humanity, her awe-shucks demeanor not so much a façade as it is a defense mechanism keeping the wannabe spy from living up to her true potential.

The supporting cast is excellent across the board, Byrne, Law and Janney particu-

larly so. But it is Statham, in some ways returning to his Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) roots, in others having a grand time eviscerating his Transporter persona, who stands out the most. His take-no-prisoners bravado is a fish tale of the nth degree, the man elevating his exploits to a place of herculean myth the Greeks themselves would have stood back and laughed at with wide-eyed disbelieving glee. While a case could be made that Ford is around maybe a little too much that doesn’t make Statham or his exuberantly manic performance less wonderful, and it’s nice to be reminded just how superb a comedic force the action star can be when he puts his mind to it.

Feig directs as soundly as ever, each set piece building upon the last while also setting up all that’s about to happen with dexterous confidence. Same time, there are points where he doesn’t always know when to say when, a few scenes going on longer than they perhaps need to leading to jokes that, while funny, don’t add as much to the proceedings as I’m guessing he wanted them to. It also takes him longer than anticipated to figure out what to do with “Call the Midwife” star Miranda Hart. Thankfully, when he does, she comes alive in ways that tickle the funny bone beyond imagination, a penultimate joke involving none other than 50 Cent more than worth the wait.

Ultimately, though, this is McCarthy’s showcase and she more than delivers. While no one would ever give her an Academy Award for this performance that doesn’t make her any less perfect. She gives Spy its reason to exist, McCarthy hitting the comedic bull’s-eye so frequently she doesn’t so much deserve an Oscar as she does an Olympic Gold Medal.

Big screen Entourage much ado about nothing

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer ENTOURAGE Now playing Barely a week after his marriage ends in annulment, international superstar Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) is back with his best buddies Eric (Kevin Connolly), Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) and older brother Johnny (Kevin Dillon). They arrive with news involving Vince’s one-time agent and former Hollywood studio head Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven). It appears he’s back running things, and he’s got a script he’s certain his former discovery is perfect for.

Vincent agrees, does so without even looking at the script, willing to sign onto the project based solely on Ari’s enthusiasm for it. The only caveat? He wants to direct, and whatever contract he signs that’s going to be the one sticking point he absolutely will not budge on a single solitary little bit.

That synopsis could be considered the pre-credits teaser as far as Entourage, a feature-length motion picture following in the footsteps of the Emmy-winning HBO series that ran on the network for eight seasons, is concerned, the crux of the film taking place months later with Vince’s directorial debut nearing completion. It all revolves around money and power, the actor trying to assert his while Ari does what he can to keep control, his star actor needing more dollars to finish the project and he’s reticent to go the Texas moneymen holding the purse strings to ask for additional funds.

Running through all of this are vari-

ous side stories involving Eric’s inability to keep it in his pants while he prepares to become a father alongside cute-as-a-button ex-girlfriend Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui), Turtle attempting to put the moves on UFC champion Ronda Rousey (playing herself) and Johnny trying to assert himself and step outside his kid brother’s shadow.

There’s a lot of bro-centric back and forth between the pals, while a variety of familiar faces (including Russell Wilson, Emily Ratajkowski, Andrew Dice Clay, Tom Brady, Piers Morgan, Mark Cuban, T.I., Tameka Harris, Gary Busey, David Arquette, Rob Gronkowski, Jon Favreau, Greg Louganis, Jessica Alba, Liam Neeson, Kelsey Grammer and Pharrell Williams) make guest appearances. Some of the jokes connect, a number of them do not, the whole things structured, shot, edited and scored like three or four episodes of a television series strung together and not anything close to resembling a traditional feature-length motion picture.

In short, fans of HBO’s show will likely be pleased, producer, director, writer and creator Doug Ellin (Kissing a Fool) designing things to preach and pander to the faithful and virtually nobody else, and that’s a problem. As a movie, Entourage doesn’t stand on its own two feet. More than that, it’s so blandly thought out, it’s main character such a charmless black hole (there’s a reason Grenier is second-billed to Connolly) and its central dynamics so unimportant maintaining interest is exceedingly difficult. On top of that, as a Hollywood satire Ellin and co-writer Rob Weiss’ (Amongst Friends) story is toothless, its myriad of

points, topics and gags so obvious for all their modern day vulgarity they’re about as profound as “See Spot Run.” Not that I didn’t laugh. Gripping Seven Five a nihilistic look at law enforcement

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE SEVEN FIVE Now playing During the early 1980s, New York City Police Officers Michael Dowd and Kenneth Eurell were patrolling the streets of the 75th Precinct, a notorious epicenter of drug abuse and crime. They would see what was going on, would witness the money changing hands and glean the type of power those running things behind the curtain had resting in the palm of their hands. While corruption in the police department was nothing new, under Dowd’s direction the pair would end up taking things to an entirely different level, their arrest in 1992 exposing a level of malfeasance so staggering it almost read like a piece of pulp crime novella fiction.

This is the story chronicled in Tiller Russell’s (Bad Boys of Summer) searing, if somewhat overly sensationalistic, documentary The Seven Five. Featuring interviews with just about everyone that matters, including Dowd and Eurell, the film attempts to probe into exactly what was going on and why, giving everything a down and dirty sheen that’s undoubtedly purposely

reminiscent of early Scorsese. It’s compelling stuff, fascinating, even, but it also feels a little more like an audition reel for a potential feature than it does an insightful, intimately probing documentary, and that’s an issue Russell’s investigative opus sometimes has trouble overcoming.

But, wow can Dowd tell a story! The way he weaves his wheeling and dealing, how he documents all the wrongdoings he played the prime role in spearheading, it’s all incredible. Not only is he a magnetic, greasily fascinating criminal, he’s also a terrific storyteller, making all the abhorrent things he put into action feel insidiously exciting. It’s heady stuff, not all of it appealing, of course, but still thrilling and riveting in all the ways that matter, and as such the film comes remarkably close to being essential.

Close, but not entirely. The sensationalism does overwhelm on occasion, and there are more than a few moments where it feels like Russell is almost too enamored with his subject. He loves to play up the seedy nihilism Dowd and his cronies take something akin to gleeful relish in trafficking, and all of this grotesquerie becomes upsetting in a way that’s uncomforting, and not in a good way.

With the sudden death of her husband, bearing witness to a powerful revelation that some force beyond the earthly realm would like to do her harm, the woman is trying to be content to live out the remainder of her years in quiet. She just doesn’t want to get involved, dealing with ghosts, demons and all of their ethereal counterparts no longer for her.

Then she meets 18-year-old Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott). The smart, emotionally pure teenager has just lost her own

mother, the after effects lingering inside her household, transforming her wellmeaning father Sean (Dermot Mulroney) into a wreck and leaving her little brother Alex (Tate Berney) quietly wondering what is going on. But when a terrifying accident sends Quinn to death’s door and leaves her with two broken legs, it’s immediately apparent to Elise she didn’t return from the other side alone. Something is stalking the young woman, a demonic thing intent on feasting on her soul, and it’s up to the psychic to decide if she’s ready to return to the supernatural battlefield or if she’d rather turn a blind eye and let the Brenner family fend for themselves.

Box office hits or no, I can’t say I was a fan of director James Wan (Furious 7, The Conjuring) and screenwriter Leigh Leigh Whannell’s (Saw, Dead Silence) previous journeys into “The Further” (the land between the living and the dead), Insidious

and Insidious Chapter 2. While each supernatural freak show about a family being hunted by a ferocious evil intent on returning to the living world via possession had their respective moments, they also had their fair share of problems. Lack of focus.

Inconsistency in tone. Unforgivable lapses into stupidity. Comedic bits that weren’t comedic and were remarkably ill-conceived.

All of these issues and more dogged the two horror films from start to finish, and as such I found little other than disappointment in the watching of them both.

Taking over the directorial reins, Whannell finishes up his trilogy with Insidious Chapter 3. But instead of continuing onward from where the second film left off he chooses instead to offer up something of a de facto prequel chronicling how psychic and ghost fighter Elise got her mojo back after suffering a heartbreaking setback.

While there are ample hints alluding to the events to come – pictures, references and visual clues abound, as does one gigantic spectral reappearance of a devilish fiend – the filmmaker actually allows this story to stand on its own. This is both as much Elise Rainier’s spiritual rebirth as it is a saga of a family in crisis, both coming together at just the right moment, each needing the other more than they initially realize.

The central scenario might be overly familiar, and I honestly can’t say Whannell’s film doesn’t do a darn thing that isn’t unexpected, but forgive me if, somewhat surprisingly, I kind of liked this prequel. It moves well, the balance between comedy and scares is solid, it’s spectacularly shot

by Brian Pearson (Into the Storm), superbly scored by returning composer Joseph Bis-

hara (Dark Skies) and unleashes its onslaught of jump scares (of which there are many, probably too many) with far more skill and effectiveness than usual for this type of affair. The film winks at the audience with knowing self-effacing glee when necessary only to play things cryptically and creepily close to the vest in the very next instant. It’s fun stuff, all of it anchored by a performance from Shaye that’s complex, strong and emotionally captivating.

Not that Whannell avoids prequel pitfalls entirely. As this effort takes place before the events of the previous two films, it’s not like a lot can happen to Elise, so even when she’s doing her best Sigourney Weaver impersonation locking horns with the demonic version of the Alien Queen there’s never any doubt who’s going to come out on top. Tension on that front is difficult to maintain, and even if the Brenner family are an unknown factor it’s safe to say that it would be unlikely our heroine would emerge from any of this as empowered and ready to tackle the forces of darkness as her sojourns with the Lamberts showcased if things were to go too deathly sour.

Be that as it may, it’s odd that this series keeps learning from its mistakes as it moves along. While not a complete success, and certainly offering nothing new, Insidious Chapter 3 is without a doubt the most consistently entertaining effort this trio of horror enterprises has offered up as of yet. It’s frightfully okay, fans of the previous motion pictures almost certain to walk away satisfied.

An evening of thrilling selections and inspired performances, the program will feature PNB’s entire Company, along with the mighty PNB Orchestra (now celebrating its 25th Anniversary) under the baton of Music Director/Principal Conductor Emil de Cou. The evening also celebrates the extraordinary careers of PNB’s departing dancers with George Balanchine’s “Serenade” and selections from his “Jewels,” the local premiere of a work by former PNB Company member Andrew Bartee, a sneak preview of Jessica Lang’s “The Calling” (to be presented as part of PNB’s 2015-2016 season) and others. The Encore Performance has become not only a favorite of mine but also of our audiences,” said PNB Artistic Director Peter Boal, when announcing the line-up for the one-night-only event. “The evening brims with excitement and emotion as we bid farewell to favorite artists and revisit cherished repertoire. With two PNB premieres, several retirements, the return of George Balanchine’s “Serenade,” and Carla Körbes’ final onstage moments, there won’t be a dry eye in the house.”

In addition to the previously announced departures of principal dancer Carla Körbes and corps de ballet dancer Brittany Reid, the Season Encore performance will be the audience’s chance to offer a fond farewell to soloist Kiyon Gaines, who will be leaving the Company and joining the PNB School as a faculty member. “Kiyon has been such a vital part of PNB for the last 14 years,” said Mr. Boal. “When I first met Kiyon, he was an eager teenager bouncing around the studio and nodding in agreement to every word I said. His infectious energy filled the room. What a pleasure it has been to watch him develop over the years, not only as a dancer, but as a choreographer and a person. Though Kiyon takes the stage for the last time as a member of this Company, we’re so grateful that he will join the Pacific Northwest Ballet School as a faculty member and continue to be a part of the institution.”

Other company members leaving PNB at the end of the season are corps de ballet dancers Raphael Bouchard, Jahna Frantziskonis, Eric Hipolito Jr., and Charles McCall.

Velocity’s International Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation + Strictly Seattle receive National Endowment for the Arts Award Award is among 1,023 made nationally Through its grant-making to thousands of nonprofits each year, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) promotes opportunities for people in communities across America to experience the arts and exercise their creativity.

In the second major grant announcement of fiscal year 2015, the NEA has awarded $20,000 to Velocity to support the Maximum Velocity summer dance festivals – Strictly Seattle and the Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation (SFDI). Velocity is proud to join leading Seattle arts organizations like Seattle Art Museum, ACT, the 5th Avenue Theatre, and UW World Series in receiving support from the NEA in this funding cycle.

carmina burana continued from cover

This richly varied evening of music and dance began with an orchestral prelude by the PNB orchestra: Aaron Copeland’s “Hoe-down” from the full-length ballet “Rodeo” (1942). This is one of Copeland’s most famous and charming American pieces that evokes the iconic musical idea of cowboys, from their horses, lassos, and high-spirited dances to their courtship of blushing sweethearts. If you closed your eyes you could almost see Agnes De Mille and her troupe of bowlegged fellers kicking up their heels and galloping away on imaginary horses. It made me wish that PNB would revive “Rodeo” and give it to us whole. Once again, conductor Emil de Cou led the flawless PNB orchestra through this rhythmically complex, tympanically delightful piece of Americana.

Though the spectacular “Carmina Burana” has been heavily advertised and is what I thought I was coming to see, I was surprised not only by “Hoe-down” but by Shostokovich’s “Concerto DSCH” choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky. This playful sequence of linked dances, featuring pianist Christina Siemens and a full stage of

Carl Orff’s oratorio – based on texts of 12th century song meditations about fortune, springtime, love, lust, and man’s fate – has been popular worldwide since it was composed in 1937. In fact, this is the second “Carmina Burana” Seattle audiences have been treated to within six weeks. But though the musical composition is the same, no two productions could be more different than Spectrum Dance Theater’s small, deft theatrical tour de force and Pacific Northwest Ballet’s grand, over-the-top, full company staging. I was blown away by Spectrum Dance Theater’s chamber opera version (see my review in SGN 5/1/15) but the popular PNB production showcases virtues of the cantata that emerge when a full choir, orchestra and dance company are deployed on a spectacular set by Ming Cho Lee. An audible gasp went up from the audience when McCaw Hall’s sparkling red curtain rose to reveal the black-cowled chorus of seventy singers (The Tudor Choir and Pacific Lutheran University Choral Union) suspended in a loft behind a monstrous golden wheel of fortune – three wheelswithin-wheels on a central axel – rotating to the magisterial chorus “O Fortuna”: O Fortune like the moon

principals and corps, flirts with a storyline (boys and girls at the beach forming and re-forming relationships in ever-flowing waves) while remaining true to modern standards of abstract design forms. And though some of the dance characters attempted to tell a specific story – Carrie Imler’s Girl-in-Blue; Carla Korbes and Karel Cruz’ Couple-in-Love – the gratifyingly anonymous couples who swirled around them created beautiful patterns of color and shape in a general, happy World of Youth and Beauty. I was far more charmed by Ratmansky’s use of the fourteen boys and girls who encircled the principals in pleasing formations than I was by the fairly conventional expressions of love and doubt expressed by the featured couples. Ratmansky is widely seen as the successor to fellow Russian choreographer George Balanchine, and you can see his debt to the master in his adagio work. He seems very much his own man, however, when manipulating the larger forces of the corps. One of his favorite themes was the formation of circles within circles around the central couples, which made “Concerto DSCH” the perfect prelude to “Carmina Burana,” which is dominated by the theme of the great Wheel of Fortune.

you are changeable ever waxing and waning first oppresses and then soothes as fancy takes it…

The lyrics continue in that vein – dark and scary – as the theme of mankind’s fragility and helplessness in the face of blind fate is developed: Fate – monstrous and empty, you whirling wheel, you are malevolent, well-being is vain and always fades to nothing, Far from being depressing, this impressive message is delivered in Latin without supertitles, so the audience is left in the presence of something awe-inspiring without knowing exactly what it is. This state of pleasantly awed ignorance persisted throughout the work as naked Adams and Eves (dancers in “skins”), country bumpkins and a femme fatal, and folk dancers skipping in circles all responded to the musically intriguing, verbally mysterious songs. I happened to know they were dancing to odes to springtime, tavern songs, and songs to courtly love because I went to Spectrum Dance Theater’s “Carmina Burana” where the lyrics were provided. I

think I was in the 5% at McCaw Hall who knew what was going on.

So here’s my opinion on whether or not to provide supertitles to foreign-language lyrics: YES – or at least have the text included in the program. I’m always on the side of meaning, especially since so many artists – poets, composer, orchestra, dancers, designers – have gone to so much trouble to create something meaningful. True, the singers and the dancers are highly expressive, yet without the words the audience is left to make up whatever narrative they want, which amounts to an abandonment of artistic control. Meaning is substance, and artists should always take responsibility (or be allowed to take responsibility) for the substance of their work.

Evidently Kent Stowell vetoed supertitles for this production because they would be distracting – but only the lack of meaning is distracting. I teach poetry at Seattle University and have heard a generation of freshmen declare in their tender ignorance that “a poem can mean whatever you want it to mean.” Ye gods! Why do poets and artists bleed themselves dry to find the right words, the right notes, the right gestures, the right settings, the right lighting, and the right costumes? So that clueless audiences can say “I think those guys in the headbands were cavemen” – which is what I heard some folks in the lobby say about the first dance in “Carmina Burana.” No, no, no. Please clue the audience in – and trust that these highly intelligent people will be enlightened rather than distracted by meaning.

That being said, the full company of dancers provided a wonderful evening of rhythmic movement as the wheel of fortune lifted into a horizontal position and

the pantomime of dancers from the “cavemen” to the “nudes” to the country dancers enacted a full range of human feelings and emotions. I found myself thinking of Stowell’s choreography in the opposite way of Radmansky: while Radmansky is more interesting to me in his deployment of groups, Stowell does very well with pairs but runs out of ideas with his large forces. Again and again his many dancers moved either in unison (twenty-four dancers jumping at the same time, twirling at the same time, etc.) or in sequence like falling dominoes (twenty-four dancers jumping in turn around a circle, twirling in turn around a circle, etc.).

At the end they all run around in a circle, like the wheel of fortune, which caused me to remember Mark Morris’s great circle dances – the maypole reversals in “King Arthur,” the ever-multiplying circles in “L’Allegro, Il Penseroso” – and wishing for a wonderful, complex, circle dance to represent the caprice and danger of a wheel of fortune. Where is the texture, the variations in level, symmetry, steps, tempi that are possible within the large sameness of a circle dance? In the absence of language, we need choreographic meaning. That “Carmina Burana” still manages to be an evening that causes an audible gasp, followed by intrigue and musical excitement, makes it well worth attending – but Google the lyrics before you go.
