About Dennis Coleman Dennis has led SMC and SWC to a position of artistic and administrative excellence with a combined singing membership that is the largest in North America. Dennis is active as a clinician and guest conductor throughout the U.S. and Canada. He served for six years on the national board of directors for Chorus America and was on the founding board of directors for GALA Choruses. As a UCC church musician, Dennis has conducted the choir of First Congregational Church of Bellevue since 1981. Dennis Coleman has commissioned and premiered choral works from many leading composers including Gian Carlo Menotti, Ned Rorem, Robert Moran, Conrad Susa, David Diamond, Robert Seeley, British composer Paul Patterson and Canadian Stephen Hatfield.

“Of Rage and Remembrance,” a 15-minute work for male chorus, mezzo soprano, speakers and orchestra by composer John Corigliano, was premiered by SMC in Seattle in 1991.

Christian rocker Trey Pearson comes out

Praise the Lord!! You can add Trey Pearson to the ever-increasing list of musicians who’ve come out in recent years. The lead singer of Christian rock band Everyday Sunday, which has sold over 250,000 albums in its career, made his sexuality official to fans on Twitter and then shared his story with (614) Magazine, from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. “I had never before admitted to myself that I was gay, let alone to anyone else,” he stated. “I never wanted to be gay. I was scared of what God would think and what all of these people I loved would think about me; so it never was an option for me.” Pearson is married and the father of a six year-old daughter and two year-old son. Everyday Sunday’s hits include “Wake Up! Wake Up!”, the most played song on Christian radio stations in 2007, “Let’s Go Back” and “Find Me Tonight.” A new single will be released by Pearson later this year.

The music lineup for the West Seattle Summer Fest will include The Dusty 45s, Tacocat, Grace Love & the True Loves, Chastity Belt, Hobosexual, The Hollers, Pillar Point, Acapulco Lips, Feather Bones and DJ

MF Cake, to name a few. The three-day event is scheduled for July 8 through 10 at The Junction, located across the West Seattle Bridge at the intersection of California Avenue SW & SW Alaska Street. Country singer Chris Young will perform on Sunday night’s Miss USA telecast, being staged at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The ACM (Academy of Country Music) and Billboard Music Awards nominee has several top

hits on his resume, including “I’m Comin’ Over,” “Voices,” “Tomorrow” and “Think of You” (with Cassadee Pope), though it hasn’t been announced what he’ll sing, or what portion of the show he’ll appear on. The Miss USA competition airs June 5 at 5pm (PST) on FOX. Finally, KEXP has announced the lineup for their Concerts at the Mural summer live music series in August. The Thermals, Acapulco Lips and Mommy Long Legs will kick things off on August 5, followed by “special guests”, Naked Giants and Bread & Butter on August 14, The Mynabirds, Radiation City and Crater on August 21 and “special guests,” Kyle Craft and Industrial Revelation on August 28. Pacific MusicWorks and UW School of Music’s Orphée et Eurydice a stunning success

by Sharon Cumberland SGN A&E Writer PACIFIC MUSICWORKS AND UW SCHOOL OF MUSIC ORPHÉE ET EURYDICE CHRISTOPH WILLIBALD GLUCK EDMUND MEANY THEATER May 21 Seattle opera fans enjoyed an unusual treat this past month when Pacific MusicWorks and the University of Washington School of Music mounted a beautifully realized production of Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice – one of the most compelling and important operas ever written.

Orpheus of Greek myth is the legendary musician who attempted to rescue his dead wife, Euridice, from the underworld. On advice from the God of Love he descends into Hades, playing his lyre in an effort to gain the Furies’ pity, hoping they will allow Euridice to return to the land of the living.

It’s the perfect story for librettists and opera composers because it offers every possible scenario for a musical drama: passion, death, poetry, beautiful music, scary monsters, Furies, and blessed spirits. Who could ask for anything more? Certainly not the sixty composers who took the legend of Orpheus for their subject, making it a genre unto itself in the eighteenth century. Yet of those sixty-plus operas written about Orpheus, only three remain in the repertoire today: Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo – written and performed in Italian for the Duke of Mantua in 1607 and the first sungthrough opera-as-we-know-it, and Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, written in Italian for the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa and performed in Vienna in 1762. The third Orpheus opera still in the repertoire is Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice, a French-language do-over of the Italian version written for Parisian opera-

goers in 1774. Gluck’s earlier Italian work was a landmark composition that changed the style of opera from tangled tales of heroism in over-ornamented arias to straightforward musical storytelling. Orfeo ed Euridice was so successful that it influenced every important composer who came after it, from Mozart to Wagner to Bizet. So you may well ask: why did Gluck need a do-over if the Italian version was such a big hit?

The answer is as interesting as the opera: Gluck re-did his masterwork because the leading role of Orfeo was originally written for a castrato, and the French didn’t like castratos.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the castrati – choirboys who were altered in childhood to preserve their treble voices. Scholars aren’t sure whether they were actually castrated or if they received childhood vasectomies, but either way, it’s not an urban legend. In Italy alone during the eighteenth century there were between two and three thousand boys castrated every year in an effort to create the super-stars of singing who populated cathedral choirs and opera stages. Unfortunately, only two percent of castrated boys made it to rock-star status – the others were left to sing in the chorus, play in orchestras, work as prostitutes, or beg on the streets. One of the most persistent questions among opera lovers is what, exactly, did the castrati sound like? We know that they had alto or soprano voices that were both agile and powerful, and that they were perceived in their day as sexy heroes. Many grew to be unnaturally tall with barrel chests because the hormone that stops growth is triggered by testosterone – which they had very little of, if any at all. Imagine a singer like Renee Fleming or Janet Baker at twice the volume and double the speed, and we might get some sense of what the castrati could do. Some, like the legendary Farinelli, could command three octaves and perform vocal acrobatics that are

almost impossible today. (We know this because Farinelli wrote down some of his own cadenzas on his vocal scores.) Gluck’s original Orfeo was the castrato Gaetano Guadagni – a very handsome fellow, if his portrait is to be believed, who displays the large body and correspondingly small head that characterizes men whose long bones grow out of proportion to their skulls.

So why did the French dislike these singers, who were lavished with praise everywhere else in the opera world? Perhaps because the French had their own music tradition during this period, that developed simultaneously with Italian opera but which did not make use of castrated choirboys. The French were less interested in spectacular voices and more interested in spectacular theatrics, fantastic costumes, and fabulous display – think of Louis the XIV as the Sun King. The music of Lully and Rameau provided the framework for these over-the-top entertainments, which called upon their own style of hero – the “haute-contre” tenor – a singer with a very high tenor voice.

We know what this style of voice sounded like because a present-day opera star, Juan Diego Florez, has one. The opera world always has to wait for the right voice to come along to revive parts of the repertoire that haven’t been heard for a while, and Florez has become a most welcome proponent of high-and-fast (as well as slow-and-legato) composers, including Rossini as well as French opera of the baroque period. His unusually clear, powerful coloratura tenor has made it possible to imagine what Gluck’s original French Orphée, the “haute-contre” tenor, Joseph Legros, sounded like. Go on Youtube and listen to Florez sing “J’ai perdu mon Eurydice” to get some sense of the piercing beauty of this style, and the gorgeous music that the audiences at Meany Hall heard in the Pacific MusicWorks production

of Orphée et Euridice.

Aaron Sheehan, a Grammy-award winning tenor with beautiful, ringing vocal tones in the haute-contre tradition, brought all the necessary pathos and passion required in the role of Orphée. The more frequently performed Italian version would have given us either a female mezzo-soprano or a countertenor – a man singing with a highly developed falsetto – so it was a pleasure to hear the role sung by someone who more nearly approximates the way we imagine the character and his vocal sound. As much as I love the Italian version, Sheehan really conveyed to me why the French preferred his style of heroic voice – high but manly, passionate but commanding.

That Sheehan is a tall, good-looking man is a bonus, especially when he descends to the underworld to contend with the Furies – a troupe of dancers who surround him with flames – and the pleadings of Eurydice who refuses to follow her husband out of Hades because he will not look at her – a condition of her rescue required by the God of Love. As Orphée moves through one challenge after another, Sheehan has the stage presence to hold the audience’s attention no matter how pitifully Eurydice pulls at him, or what gang of hostile spirits swirl around him.

For me, Amanda Forsythe was a perfect Eurydice – not only in her glowing, richly produced voice but also in her sympathetic acting.

I have never been able to relate to this character in the several productions I’ve seen – she always seems frivolous and selfish. I mean, seriously, if your husband comes all the way down to the underworld and braves a threeheaded dog and a gang of Furies to bring you back to life, can’t you trust him enough to follow instructions? Why make him turn around and break his vow to the God of Love, which will cause you to die after all? I always thought Eurydice deserved her fate for being

such a self-absorbed weakling. But Forsythe changed my apprehension of Eurydice, especially when she asks Orphée why she should want to return to life if the one she loves the most is indifferent to her. The combination of Forsythe’s tender, desperate acting and her nuanced voice as she made this argument caused me to see Eurydice’s dilemma for the first time. My understanding was greatly helped by the clever staging, in which the translated text framed Stage Director Gilbert Blin’s gorgeous projections, bringing the conflict straight to the audience without the distraction of looking up at supertitles. It was almost as though I could understand French.

There were two other heroes in this production, in my opinion – Music Director Stephen Stubbs, and the choreographer, Anna Mansbridge. Director Stubbs has established himself and Pacific MusicWorks as one of the foremost Baroque orchestras in the nation – a fact recognized last year by his Grammy Award. The conducting was very distinctive – a beat so strong that images of Lully and his conducting staff came to mind – supporting the iconic melodies that propel the singers and dancers through the drama. This under-beat made music I’ve heard a hundred times sound

new and anticipatory – as if I’d reached another level in the game and was looking at a new version of an old universe.

I was especially impressed by the collaboration between the UW Music School and PMW – the generous investment of expert musicians in the orchestra of tomorrow.

This collaboration extended to the UW chorus and dancers, who were guided by Anna Mansbridge in a particularly effective sequence of movements as nymphs and shepherds, as Furies, and as happy spirits. It often happens in operas, as it did here, that there is a central corps of trained dancers doing the hard steps surrounded by a swaying chorus. But as less often happens in operas, the chorus members were called upon to perform choreographed gestures that intensified and amplified the dance. My favorite example of this strategy was the Dance of the Blessed Spirits – a dozen white-clad spirits slowly walking in an arc with simple, simultaneous arm movements and easy lifts of the heel. It required some coordination to create the effect of individuals in sublime unity, but it was a dance you or I could do if we practiced. When I hear this famous music I always imagine a circle dance, as though the spirits are living in eternal, unend-

diehard Sasquatch fans slightly disappointed, but hopeful for improvement and a little bit of luck for the organizers of Sasquatch next year.

For three years now, photographer Nate Gowdy (whose work is featured on the cover of the latest TIME Magazine) and I have both welcomed attending Sasquatch as we find it helps break up the work year in both our lines of work and because we’re both avid music fans. Sasquatch has a very eclectic music palate and does a good job of introducing fans to a variety of acts. It’s always a great feeling to discover a new band and Sasquatch’s extraordinarily beautiful venue makes that experience all the more memorable.

Vic Mensa, a Chicago hip hop artist affiliated with the likes of Jay-Z and Kanye West, rocked the Bigfoot stage Saturday night with an army of cardboard cutout cops that looked like they could’ve been designed by Banksy.

The constant red and blue lightshow fit perfectly with Vic’s more recent anarchy-influenced style of music and aesthetic.

Major Lazer fed the hungry-for-a-party Saturday night crowd on the main stage a feast of reggae, dancehall, and electronic dance music. Performing tracks from their latest album Peace is the Mission, Major Lazer allowed us to dance up a sweat in the

cold that sweeps over the Gorge once the sun goes down, lighting up the night sky with a vibrant and blinding light show.

Moved from the main stage and into the El Chupacabra tent due to high winds, Seattle’s own Tacocat took the stage Sunday afternoon to a crowd of enthusiastic fans.

Tacocat’s feministic pop punk style made the crowd bounce around to songs like “FDP” and “Bridge to Hawaii.” Tacocat’s bio-queen with armpit hair aesthetic makes them a funto-see, truly Capitol Hill cultured band.

ing bliss. But the choice of an open, weaving line in perfect unity suggested an inclusiveness and progression I had not thought of before. In another beautiful choreographic moment, Orphée is shown a sequence of human virtues in which quartets of dancers suggest love, nourishment, and attentiveness to the beloved. It was so beautiful I wanted to hug my opera buddy. It was a message that jumped out of the story and into the hearts of the viewers.

Gluck’s French Orphée et Eurydice seems to meditate more prominently than its counterpart on the testing of the gods – “What punishments you mix with your gifts!” Orphée sings at one point – and the rewards of love. In this less common version, with its more recognizable (which is to say, more modern) hero and heroine, we see the psychological problems and the hard-won triumphs of love more clearly.

crowd by storm, sounding as sweet as Lynyrd Skynyrd claims the state to be. Sounds from their song “Hold On” took the Gorge to church that Sunday evening. Upon hearing the first song, I became an instant fan of this groovy sounding band.

Closing out the night on Sunday was Big Grams, the collaboration by Big Boi from Outkast and the electronic rock duo Phantogram. Being a big fan of both acts, this was an act that I could not miss. As expected, Big Grams came out and put on a spectacular show. The chemistry that this band shares on stage makes it seem like they are a family just having fun making music. At one point Sarah Barthel, lead singer of Phantogram, introduced us to her mom who Sarah claimed was high. Big Boi and Sarah also told us that it was Phantogram member Josh Carter’s birthday. They brought out a piñata crafted as a mule and had us wish Josh Carter a happy birthday. The high energy and funky music blend that these artists create is a great fusion of two styles that would never seem to work on paper, but there is no denying what it makes you feel in the flesh when you see thousands of people dancing the night away to Big Grams.

Vancouver BC’s electronica artist Grimes lit up the Gorge with electric sounds and Gollum-esque noises that worked beautifully as the sun set on Monday. Grimes’ stage performance exudes confidence, almost like a little girl that is talking back to her parents for a completely benign point, which is fascinating because she turns into a mousy little girl in between songs – smiling widely, sheepishly thanking the audience and apologiz-

ing for … nothing really. However sheepish Grimes may be, it doesn’t translate into her music and performance. Nate and I watched as a woman in an American flag bikini top and daisy dukes on danced like a stripper to Grimes’ high-energy sound.

Closing out the main stage for the weekend were the majestic sounds of London’s Florence and the Machine. Florence Welch took us on an emotional and spirited journey as she danced and twirled around like a jewelry box ballerina while delivering hits such as “Shake It Out” and “Sweet Nothing.”

Mentioning that she wished she could’ve brought a full choir with her to accompany the epic sound of the band, Welch sweetly directed the audience to get involved as her choir while putting our phones down in order to savor moments without technology’s invasion.

At times the errors in fluidity of this year’s Sasquatch scared me as to what could happen to this great festival in the future years if it continues in the direction of act cancellations. Attending Sasquatch is quite a commitment of time and money, and missing an act that you’re excited about can really be a bummer. I’m able to reflect on what might have dampened the experience and I’m pretty confident that Sasquatch organizers will put on one hell of a festival again next year because most of what went wrong simply was not the organizers’ fault. We must remember that Mother Nature can be a bitch sometimes and rain on our parade, or threaten to blow over the main stage at Sasquatch. Until next year, Sasquatch!

Caught at Seattle Public asks “What is true?”

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer CAUGHT SEATTLE PUBLIC THEATER Through June 12 We hang a lot on “truth” and believing in something real. We like to feel anchored and then free to explore. How many like to go

somewhere new and then put your clothing and possessions into hotel drawers so you feel “at home” before you wander off to explore the new environment?

Caught, by Christopher Chen, is a play at Seattle Public Theater. But it’s more an experience in disorientation than any kind of story.

It asks what truth is. It challenges us to look at what we believe or understand and then shakes us up to ask that again and again and

again.

By the time you walk out of the 75-minute whirlpool of ideas, you may not even know if you’re really standing outside a theater. Maybe you just went to a lecture, or were in an art gallery.

In fact, you start the experience (“created”

by Jon Kretzu) by walking into an art gallery with modern art displayed by the artist Lin Bo, an artist who is introduced to give a talk to us about his art. The talk is a heady intellectual journey into what the fundamentals of art are. He says that, in an ultimate concept, he declared a protest against the Chinese government via social media at a specific date and time (to commemorate the Tianamen Square uprising) but put no location in the announcements, declaring that just by people knowing and expecting there to be a protest that the protest has taken place in the mind.

Bo says that he did not think that he could get in trouble for fomenting a protest if there was no location for the protest and it didn’t happen outside of people’s minds. However, he details that he indeed was thrown into prison and held for three years, anyway. It is a riveting talk.

But perhaps he is not what he says he is. Or perhaps the protest is not the only thing that is just in people’s minds. To explain more is to ruin the rest of the experience, designed to disorient and play off of tropes about how we know and understand the world, including the

mechanisms we use to suspend our disbelief about what is happening on stage.

The gallery visitors are given laminated information about the gallery and the displayed art. More information isn’t given out until the end of the short (75 minute) presentation.

Given the kind of exploration Chen has presented us, and the questions surrounding what truth is, in this political season, when one particular candidate seems to relish distortions and lies as a way of communicating, the relevance of the event seems even more timely.

er” Billy in a dream-type sequence that is danced with Scott Brateng, who looks spectacular in it, and several different styles of music. Tabb’s effort is a huge highlight of the production.

The rest of the vibrant cast is excellently filled with Village veterans like Eric Polani Jensen as Billy’s dad, Matthew Kacergis as Billy’s brother, Eric Gratton, Greg Stone and Greg McCormick Allen, and includes Mari Nelson as the gutsy, pretend-hardhearted ballet teacher, and Faye B. Summers making a welcome stage return as Grandma.

A couple of youngsters take on the sweet role of Michael, the cross-dressing boy who gives Billy some courage. I saw Quinn Liebling (the other is Bryan Kinder) who was quite adorable and funny.

The set, a difficult aspect to pull off well, is by Bill Forrester, and pull it off he does! Somehow, a two-story spiral staircased bedroom and other large pieces of scenery are whisked on and off the stage almost by magic. Maestro Steve Tomkins makes everything move, and Cynthia Savage and her costume shop pull off great, colorful togs, with lights by Alex Berry and sound by Brent Warwick. Music direction

by Tim Symons brings to life a relatively complex score with a pretty tiny orchestra.

They provide a lush background.

This is a very big effort for this company and a joyous and well-done production after all the effort. Kudos to pulling it off and you should go and have a great time.

(Note to folks with younger kids, there is a heavy accent to learn to understand, and also some fair amount of swearing, so be aware that it is about a younger boy, but maybe not for younger children.)

Village Theatre has undertaken an enormously difficult challenge with the mounting of the musical Billy Elliot, by Elton John and Lee Hall. I think they’ve pulled it off, by golly!

It’s based on the movie about a young British boy who finds a love of ballet, during the 1983 mining troubles there. The gritty miners, including Billy’s own family, have great difficulty moving past their prejudices about ballet, but finally find their way to supporting Billy in his quest to get to ballet school.

While that sounds like a spoiler, perhaps, the great joy in the musical is watching it unfold and seeing the dance extravaganza. In particular, the role of Billy is relentless. The boy has to be in almost every single scene and does the vast majority of the dancing, some of it by himself. In order to keep from exhausting one young talent, most productions hire several Billys to make sure the role can be managed many times per week.

The four boys performing Billy for Village are (in alphabetic order) Nikita Baryshnikov, Vincent Bennett (the boy I saw perform), Bito Gottesman and Philipp Mergener. Vincent has a young and pleasant singing voice, does a great job of the acting, and works diligently at the difficult choreography. Very likely as he and the rest of the young men progress through this experience, they will all grow enormously in their abilities to handle such a big responsibility.

They’ve been working pretty much weekly for months to manage the choreography, with hands on help from Katy Tabb, the young up and coming choreographer who absolutely killed (in the good way) each and every choreographic task. There are a passel of young girls who have ballet class dancing and a big number of their own, a solo for Billy where he displays his anger and frustration, a duet with an “old-

Motown The Musical – #1 with a bullet

by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN A&E Writer MOTOWN THE MUSICAL PARAMOUNT THEATRE Through June 12 Motown. The name itself has become synonymous with classic music, rhythm & blues, and of course, some of the most influential pop hits in United States history.

The record label introduced the world to such legends as Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells, The Jackson Five, and the incredible Diana Ross & The Su-

premes. The man behind Motown is the incomparable genius of Berry Gordy; Motown The Musical is his story and is currently playing at the Paramount Theatre.

The musical Motown is more than the story of Berry Gordy, Jr.; it is also about the music that changed the world. Young Berry has been a jack-of-all-trades (including a boxer) before the chance meeting with the legendary Jackie Wilson.

After presenting the singer with a song he wrote (the hit, “Reet Petite”) Berry breaks into the music business. Frustrated with the way his good friend Smokey Robinson and other African-American artists are

being treated, Berry starts his own recording studio Hitsville, USA with his label (Motown) and begins to recruit talent. After such talents as Martha & the Vandellas, The Marvelettes, and Smokey Robinson, Berry comes across a trio of young girls calling themselves “The Supremes.” After several unsuccessful recordings, the group finally gets a hit and launches the career of Diana Ross. The musical Motown continues with the (until recent years) secret romantic relationship between Berry Gordy and Diana Ross exploring the shared lives of these two strong Diva personalities. As each of Motown’s talent becomes more popular, they one by one leave the Motown label for further career opportunities.

There is a plethora of talent in a musical like Motown, and it does not go without letting them shine. As each of Berry Gordy’s discoveries is introduced, they get a moment (or longer) to sing one of their hit songs. Martina Sykes plays a “Vandella” and the back up Supreme, Cindy Birdsong. When Ms. Sykes appears as Mary Wells (aka “The Queen of Motown”) she holds a perfect single note so long, she completely fills the auditorium on her own accord. Jesse Nager plays Smokey Robinson, the writer of such hits as “My Guy” and “You Beat Me to the Punch.” Mr. Nager continues his Broadway run as the legendary composer, impersonating Robinson’s unique voice, and powerful vocals.

Without doubt it is Allison Semmes (playing Diana Ross) and especially Chester Gregory (Berry Gordy) that are the obvious leads of the show. It is easy to see why Ms. Semmes was cast in this role; she is the very facsimile of Diana

Ross. From the moment she first appears, Ms. Semmes’ impersonation is damned good! From the way she struts to the way she lounges on a chair, Ms. Semmes adds a nuance with the perfect mixture of soft voice, strong presence and Diva attitude that there is a reason they call her, Ms. Ross! Chester Gregory as Berry Gordy is the central character in this production.

He brings a strong stage presence, a good voice, and a gregarious persona to the legendary music magnet. Mr. Gregory has no problems showing the rounded personality of Gordy, especially when it comes to his personal sense of family, business, loyalty and ethics.

There is no Motown without the music, and the music in this production is as much an essential character as anyone on stage.

The classic songs are here: “Better Shop Around,” “My Guy,” “My Gal,” “Dancing in the Streets,” “Baby Love,” as well as the later classics, “Super Freak,” “Brick House,” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” that became part of the Motown songbook in the later years. Motown The Musical is the rare combination of musical revue and “jukebox” musical that actually works. And it works very well.

Motown The Musical is based on the Berry Gordy autobiography, To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, The Memories of Motown. The show opened on Broadway in April 2013 and it is currently still running on the Great White Way. Motown The Musical was nominated for four 2013 Tony Awards, but was overlooked for a Best Musical nomination.

Latest Turtles an obnoxious waste of time

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS Now playing There’s no point my trying to review Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. I’ve never been much of a fan of the characters created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. I never understood the passion for the cartoon series (no matter which incarnation we are talking about). I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how the 1990 movie became a hit. I have no idea how it spawned two sequels and a CGI animated spinoff. And, while instantly forgettable and not nearly as terrible as it could have been, I can’t say I cared for 2014’s hit cinematic reboot of the series starring Megan Fox as newscaster April O’Neil and produced by Transformers maestro Michael Bay. All-in-all, this has never proven to be a series I’ve shown an ounce of affinity for,

so my not liking this latest sequel is hardly a thing that could be considered even slightly a surprise.

But Out of the Shadows is quite terrible, amazingly so, almost equaling 1991’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze as far as levels of absurdly annoying awfulness are concerned. Returning screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) throw in the cartoon towel as far as all of this nonsense is concerned, utilizing every fan-favorite item they can think of including buffoonish henchmen Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams), a warthog, and Rocksteady (Sheamus), a Rhino, hockey stick-wielding vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell), here re-imagined as a disgraced police officer trying to redeem himself, and interstellar world-conquering dimension hopper Commander Krang (voiced

by Brad Garrett). It’s all here, including the return of the murderous Shredder (Brian Tee) and the arrival of egotistical genetic scientist Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry), the two madmen joining forces to enact an evil plan that

could spell doom for all of New York City.

And what is that plan? Seriously, I don’t have the first clue. Through a nonsensical plot device Commander Krang starts Shredder and Stockman down their path of world domination, the pair needed three otherworldly devices in order to build a machine that will allow them access to power beyond imagining. Only the turtles, Leonardo (Pete Ploszek), Donatello (Jeremy Howard), Raphael (Alan Ritchson) and Michelangelo (Noel Fisher), can stop them, especially after Bebop and Rocksteady are mutated into new animalistic forms. They are aided by O’Neil, Jones and TV cameraman turned Big Apple celebrity Vernon Fenwick (Will Arnett), while hard-boiled New Yorker Chief Vincent (Laura Linney) is forced to put her worries and fears aside and trust a quartet of reptilian teenage ninjas to save her city before disaster strikes.

I’m not going to judge anyone’s acting.

I’m not going to say much about the plot other than it’s all as absurd and as nonsensical as it sounds. I will say director Dave Green

(Earth to Echo) channels his inner Michael Bay and this isn’t a compliment, allowing his trio of editors Bob Ducsay (Godzilla), Jim May (Non-Stop) and Debra Neil-Fisher (The Hangover) to cut things so hyperactively the majority of the action sequences becoming nothing short of a headache-inducing blur. I’ll also say the script has dumbed things down to such a colossal extent it’s like Appelbaum and Nemec are aiming to please eight-yearold kids and practically no one else, the cartoonish idiocy of all of this more suited to any number of Nickelodeon cartoons and just about nothing else.

But these turtles have their fans, passionate ones, and I fully grasp that this is one sequel that is designed almost exclusively with them in mind. None of which makes watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows any less painful for yours truly; and while I’m open to keep giving these films the benefit of the doubt, after 25-plus years of doing so I’m starting to think it’s possible all I’ve been doing is wasting one heck of a lot of time.

by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who also directed the feature film adaptation of the beloved children’s book Ramona and Beezus and episodes of “Gossip Girl,” “Vampire Diaries” and “90210.” I caught up with Allen Rosenbaum this week by phone and here’s what she shared with me about the film.

Albert Rodriguez: Have you ever been to Seattle?

Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum: I have, yes. I went to Bumbershoot, two times. I loved it! I had a short film that played there and we were given the passes and we got to see David Lee Roth high-kicking in fluorescent yellow pants with no shirt and we went to see Cake and Jack Black performing. It was unbelievable, like every minute was so exciting.

Rodriguez: What was it like to work with Nick Jonas?

Rosenbaum: He was terrific. We made this movie a couple of years ago. One of our distributors fell through and then we couldn’t find anyone to release it, so he was 19 when we worked with him. It was his first movie. He was very excited, hard working and fun. He had a sense of humor about the whole thing and yet very serious about it; he went out and got an acting coach and was very careful with his transition into film acting.

Rodriguez: There are a few steamy scenes in this film and many actors say that sex scenes are challenging because they’re filmed in front of a whole crew, so they’re not as intimate as what we see on screen.

What is it like for a director?

Rosenbaum: It’s an awkward situation, where you’re trying to make something that’s provocative, and yet it’s technical.

Generally, you have a closed set with only the bare minimum of crew in there, which means that I become the sheep wrangler and the hair fixer because those scenes need to be seen as hot, so those scenes are really important. Isabel was a bit more nervous than Nick; Nick was game for anything and he was really good about making her feel comfortable.

Rodriguez: Was there a body double used for Nick?

Rosenbaum: Oh, no. I’m sure he wouldn’t have consented to that (laughs).

Rodriguez: Another actor who’s in this film is Dermot Mulroney, a veteran that’s been in a lot of great movies. What was it like to work with him and had you met prior to this film?

Rosenbaum: I’d met him on a little indie project that didn’t actually quite come to fruition, but I really liked him when I

met him. He’s generally cast in these affable and likeable roles, whether it be My Best Friend’s Wedding, where he’s the love interest, so I thought it was a nice change of pace for him to play someone who was more volatile and dangerous. He’s got a really interesting look and voice, and because he was a veteran he was very gracious with the younger cast; I know he and Nick went golfing a couple of times and got to know each other. It was a nice energy.

Rodriguez: How long was the filming process, from first day of shooting to the wrap?

Rosenbaum: It was 24 days of shooting. They were short days, we didn’t get large amounts of hours per day, and there was a lot of night shooting and water and boats, all of which are extremely slow. Sex scenes are slow, boats are slow on the water because if you’re electrical the platform becomes so complex. But everything about it was laborious because it’s a thriller and to have a short 24-day schedule was very challenging.

Rodriguez: Were there rehearsals prior to filming, or did the cast meet before to go over the script?

Rosenbaum: Because it was very low budget and the actors were doing it as more of a passion project – they had to squeeze it in between other things – I had one day of rehearsal, and I was already prepping in North Carolina, but I flew back to L.A. and spent a day in a conference room with Nick, Graham and Isabel, and we went through the script and did some improving [improvising] of the scenes to get into the headspace of the characters.

for directors and producers, so do you feel there’s a need for more female writers to eventually have more female directors?

And do you think there will be more female

filmmakers in the future?

Rosenbaum: In this particular project, the producers were very keen on finding a female director and went out of their way to do so. I think people are very conscious about it and there’s not an enormous pool.

When I have free time, I teach at USC to help grow that pool of talent. I don’t know about the writers situation; that’s certainly the case in television, where the writers are in charge and do the hiring, but in feature films it’s the other way around, it’s the producers that have the say in hiring. So, I would say it’s really important to have more female producers, if we’re going to have more female directors.

Rodriguez: For anyone interested in directing, is it a must to attend film school?

Rosenbaum: I don’t think so. It’s really by choice. Some people feel it’s good to have the structure of film school and some people are more self-disciplined. For me, it worked out well because it was long enough ago that it was harder to get your hands on equipment. It was predominately to have a couple of years in an incubator and really find my voice, but also to get my hands on the equipment.

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer JOHN CARPENTER PARAMOUNT THEATRE June 12 I love John Carpenter. There’s no other way to say it. Halloween, Big Trouble in Little China, Assault on Precinct 13, The Fog, Escape from New York, Prince of Darkness, Elvis, Starman, In the Mouth of Madness, They Live!, Vampires, all of these films stir my imagination down to its core, each offering up a variety of creepy, down-and-dirty delights that get me excited just thinking about them again here.

Heck, I consider his 1982 remake of The Thing, an insidiously, diabolically creepy horror opus filled with a mind-numbing array of psychological layers, to be one of the greatest motion pictures of all-time.

Ever. Period. No extra embellishments. No exclamation points.

One of the more successful elements in every film Carpenter has made, good, bad, in-between, are the scores fueling them, the majority of them written by the director himself. Sometimes in collaboration with others (most frequently Alan Howarth and Shirley Walker), but most frequently entirely on his own, his music has reached the point where just a few bars of the themes to Halloween or Escape from New York are enough to set viewers on edge anticipating the unsettling terrors to come.

It’s taken over four decades, but Carpenter is finally being recognized for his work as a composer. His first album, Lost Themes, released in 2015 by Sacred Bones Records and containing compositions cowritten by his son Cody and fellow musician Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies, was something of a surprise hit with both

critics and fans. So much so, not only did the album spawn a sequel, Lost Themes II released just this past April, it also found the legendary film director doing something brand new, going on a concert tour.

After kicking things off with a sold out event in Los Angeles back on May 20, Carpenter, joined by his son Cody and fellow songwriter Davies, comes to Seattle on Tuesday, June 14, for a show at the Paramount Theatre, and I couldn’t be more excited. Just the idea of the filmmaker and composer coming to town has me geeking out like a star-struck 12-year-old, and I kind of can’t wait to attend the concert.

Both Lost Themes albums are fantastic, and reviews of the L.A. show were ecstatic. It should be a great night, and my anticipation for it is through the roof.

Mostly, though, the reason I’m so excited about Carpenter’s concert is how it reacquaints me with my childhood. His visit reminds me why I fell in love with cinema,

allows me to revisit how I ended up on the path to becoming a film critic. His movies allowed my imagination to soar, helped me navigate traumatic experiences and, in their own odd sort of way, helped me become comfortable with my own selfexamination as it pertained to sexuality and gender. I have a personal tie to this filmmaker unlike any I have with other directors, and I can’t believe for a second I’d have followed the path I have in life if I hadn’t encountered a number of his motion pictures. But, hey, in the end, going to John Carpenter’s concert at the Paramount has more to do with just wanting to be entertained more than it does anything else, and I have this sneaking suspicion that’s exactly what is going to happen.

In a world not unlike our own, singles trying to eke out a living on their own are arrested by the police and sent to The Hotel, a five-star estate overflowing in amenities. They are tasked with finding a mate, someone it is assumed, or at least hoped, they will subsequently spend the remainder of their life with. Unless they earn extra time, usually by hunting fugitive singles hiding in an adjacent forest, after 45 days it is determined they will not find a partner, and as such are transformed into an animal of their choice and sent out into the wild to begin their lives anew.

Recently divorced, David (Colin Farrell) has arrived at The Hotel. After settling in, he quickly makes the acquaintance of a man with a lisp (John C. Reilly) and another sporting a rather significant limp (Ben Whishaw). The Hotel Manager (Olivia Colman) believes David has what it takes to find a match, particularly proud of him when he seems to hit it off with a seemingly heartless woman (Angeliki Papoulia) who has managed to remain at The Hotel almost four-times longer than her allotted 45 days thanks in large part to her skill hunting singles in the forest. He’s also fond of a young woman prone to nosebleeds (Jessica Barden), but his limping friend feigns a similar ailment in order to get close to her, the sight of the two of them together causing David to feel pangs of anger he doesn’t believe either deserve.

pertains to Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos’ ( Dogtooth ) odd, enchantingly bizarre and bracingly surreal The Lobster, a Kafka-meets-Kubrick romantic allegory that puts society under a kind of microscopic glare that is as entirely unique as it is uncomfortably original. Working once again with co-screenwriter Efthymis Filippou (Alps), the pair have dreamt up an otherworldly scenario I can barely comprehend let alone try to describe, the above synopsis barely hinting at the imaginative chaos this film proudly celebrates.

There is a detached indifference to the ins and out of the mating process, a clinical exactitude that almost requires potential couples share all the same qualities both mental and physical. This depiction is then mirrored in many ways by those who choose to live unattached, singles practically forced to remain emotionally dispassionate or risk being ostracized and physically mutilated by fellow non-marrieds hiding in the forest alongside them. In both instances, love either isn’t a consideration for coupling or is disallowed entirely, giving things an almost Orwellian edge that’s impossible to miss.

As impressive as all of this might be, The Lobster isn’t an easy movie to like.

It’s purposefully distancing, conversations taking place with a stilted exactitude that’s initially off-putting, while the crazed nature of the dystopian scenario itself keeps

the viewer at arm’s length almost as if the filmmakers were daring them to try and embrace their motion picture knowing doing so is practically ridiculous. These are archetypes, person-sized caricatures being sent forth to navigate a type of maze where the entrance is impassible and the exit is nothing short of a nightmare. Worse, freedom comes with a price, one that is almost as bad as being stuck in that cheese-filled mousetrap in the first place.

And yet, the level of emotion as things build to their conclusion is extraordinary.

In a second act twist, David ends up in the forest, attempts to survive alongside the rebels, and in the process encounters a kindred spirit (Rachel Weisz) he’s not allowed to fall for on pain of emasculation. Yet their romance, guided by distance, tinged with regret, aching with subtle glancing caresses and the occasional freshly skinned rabbit, has a punch to it that’s startling, building in intimate intensity as events progress. It all leads to an unfathomable form of tragedy that’s as distasteful as it is touching, these emotional opposites working in delicate concert and in doing so compose a concerto of romance and togetherness that spans the entire extent of the human condition.

Farrell is nothing short of brilliant, his brave, fearlessly raw performance containing a plethora of subtle gradations that fit in perfectly with the world Lanthimos has gone to great pains to create. He’s matched

by Weisz, the intricacies of her psychological maneuverings as she clinically assesses her situation bordering on remarkable.

Whishaw, Colman, Papoulia, Ariane Labed (as a secretive maid working at The Hotel) and especially a carnivorously manipulative Léa Seydoux (as the leader of the rebels living in the forest) are also superb, while Reilly brings a shaggy dog comedic weariness to his few moments that hammer home the script’s cleverer nuances rather marvelously.

It’s hard to know exactly who The Lobster is made for; all I really know is that I rather loved it. This is the type of film I’m going to watch multiple times, obsessing over every choice Lanthimos and his talented team of cinematic craftsmen made in order to see it come to life. It is a brutal evisceration of cultural conventions regarding sex, gender, romance and love, offering up so much food for thought only the animal lurking inside us all is capable of lapping it up as if it were Thanksgiving dinner.
