An interview with Cat Hayes

It’s true. Back in 1933, a Seattle politician tried to pass a bill outlawing the music as being a cause of mental insanity, known as Jazz Intoxication.

Shedding light on the anniversary of this now absurd chapter of our city’s and state’s history, Washington State HistoryLink through King County’s 4 Culture Site Specific Arts program presents a night of “Jazz Intoxication.” The multi-floor live exhibition will be presented at Washington Hall, the very building where jazz intoxication was first introduced in Seattle. The Seattle Gay News spoke with (Gypsy) Cat Hayes, a local performer and one of the people involved in the “Jazz Intoxication Project.”

Eric Andrews-Katz: You perform in several different genres. Who were your earliest influences in becoming an actress?

Cat Hayes: Judy Garland was a huge introduction for me. Not from The Wizard of Oz as much from hearing her sing “The Man That Got Away” and that kind of torch music. Rodgers & Hammerstein are always good influences, but there’s nothing like Sondheim torch songs.

Andrews-Katz: Who were your earliest influences in becoming a jazz singer?

Hayes: Karen Carpenter was the first person that grabbed my attention. She isn’t a jazz singer, but she had a nuance to her voice that had soul. There’s Billie Holliday – of course! And the 5th Dimension, I grew up listening to them. Marilyn McCoo had a hell of a range to her voice and Ella Fitzgerald, Satchmo, and Johnny Mathis.

Andrews-Katz: How did music help you deal with your ADHD? Hayes: I was on meds for a while, but they didn’t work for me. I think of ADHD as a palette with lots of colors, but the edges are frayed. When I perform, it is automatic and I don’t have to think about what I’m doing. When I put myself into a musical place

the edges get calmed and put into place.

Andrews-Katz: How does the project “Chairs” reach out to the Seattle community and beyond?

Hayes: The Company that produces “Chairs” is Silver Kite; Jen Kulik is the director and founder with a degree in theatre.

The show consists of five actors ranging from 18-71 and has them tell stories that somehow involve a chair. One actor is an 18-year-old Korean gal and then there is a 71 year old Grandpa, and they tell stories crossing boundaries and lines that [most people] don’t think about on a daily basis.

Andrews-Katz: Is it true that in Seattle, jazz could get one incarcerated to an insane asylum?

Hayes: Yes! Back in 1933 a representative named William A. Allen tried to pass a bill at the Capitol Building in Olympia, to put a law on jazz music because it caused delirium and “intoxicative behavior in people.” He even got doctors to back him

up. The music was causing nerve damage; it was bad for the country, and it should be banned. Those listening or promoting jazz music should be arrested and go to an asylum. The bill obviously did not pass, but what a different world it would have been if it did.

Andrews-Katz: Tell us about the “Jazz Intoxication” at Washington Hall.

Hayes: The building has been renovated and is going to be reopening. The insides [for this event] will be sectioned off – like a maze. They are using the space as part of the story, bringing all these very bizarre events to life along with the history of the hall. The Washington State HistoryLink (http://www.HistoryLink.org) is sponsoring the evening’s event.

Everything will be going on simultaneously, on several different floors. There will be performances, exhibits, and “ghosts of who were there.” One woman is playing Miss Lillian Smith who did a benefit concert for the NAACP back in the day. She will be singing with a live jazz band.

Andrews-Katz: Given the opportunity to travel through time, if needed, what jazz singer would you like to have performed with and why?

Hayes: I have to go with Billie Holliday.

Why? Because it’s FRIGGIN’ Billie Holliday, duh!

continued from cover songwriter has released any new material in recent years, we heard none of it Friday night as he performed an open-air concert under mostly clear skies at the baseball stadium.

Joel delivered hit after hit for over two hours, all plucked from his catalog that stretches back to 1971, in his first Seattle show in six years. Previously, he’d joined Elton John at Key Arena for two performances during the “Face to Face 2010” tour.

The concert began promptly at 9 p.m. with Joel sitting at a piano positioned in the middle of the stage and playing the opening notes of “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway),” a track that despite its title originally appeared on his 1976 album, Turnstiles. The mood went from mellow to festive very quickly when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Kennedy Center Honors inductee reeled off the second number, “Pressure,” from his double-platinum recording The Nylon Curtain.

“Good evening to you, Seattle,” said Joel to thousands of fans up in the stands and some seated on the field. “Long time, no see.”

He continued interacting with the audience, recalling his first appearance in the Emerald City in the 1970s at a place called the Fresh Air Tavern, which he described as a “dump.”

From his third studio album, 1974’s Streetlife Serenade, Joel pulled out “The Entertainer” and then allowed the crowd to choose between two songs, “Summer, Highland Falls” or “Vienna”; the latter earned a more enthusiastic response, and he sang it beautifully as images of buildings, streets and landmarks of the European city flashed on overhead LED screens.

Supported by a full band that took up the entire stage, Joel mostly sat at the piano – because that’s what he does – that rotated 360-degrees on a platform, letting the poprock icon face various sides of the sports venue, which has hosted less than a handful of music events in its history.

After a terrific rendition of “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song),” complete with real time images of Joel tapping away on the piano displayed on the raised screens, concertgoers were offered another choice of two songs,

Being one of his three main influences, Chester Gregory gets to honor and pay homage to this legendary man.

“An Innocent Man” or “The Longest Time”; the latter number won out and Joel intro’d the 1984 hit with a snippet of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

Aerial shots of the Big Apple’s skyline were shown in the background as Joel performed a captivating version of “New York State of Mind,” while black and white images of industrial workers were pieced together in a slideshow during “Allentown.” A brief sample of “Ode to Joy” served as an intro for “My Life,” which everyone sang along to, and then Joel delighted the audience with a trio of huge fan favorites, “Sometimes a Fantasy,” “She’s Always a Woman” and “Don’t Ask Me Why.” The first of two short breaks Joel took was when a member of his road crew, named “Chainsaw,” jumped on stage and belted out a decent cover of AC/DC’s “Highway to

Hell.”

A series of burning flames were the backdrop for “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” followed by “The River of Dreams” that began with Joel and his band playing about a minute’s worth of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze.” “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” and Joel’s signature “Piano Man” closed out the main set. During “Piano Man,” many grown men throughout the stadium put their arms around each other and swayed side-toside, while singing along happily and loudly.

Through the years, it’s become the equivalent of a beloved English pub song.

“Thank you, Seattle! You rock!” Joel yelled out before slipping away backstage. A few minutes later, he returned for a whopping five-song encore.

Although he admitted to “Uptown Girl” ripping his “throat apart,” it didn’t stop him

from performing it. Joel abandoned his piano for the ’80s classic, standing and singing it at the foot of the stage. His vocals suffered slightly during “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me,” but in his defense he’d been singing nearly non-stop for more than two hours.

And just when you thought Joel was going to pack it in for the night, he unleashed two more hits, “Big Shot” and “You May Be Right”; everybody, of course, was on their feet.

A vibrant, swingy rendition of “Only the Good Die Young” capped the show, which was definitely one for the record books.

If Billy Joel isn’t yet crossed off your bucket list, you missed a golden opportunity to do so at Safeco Field. He’s noticeably aged – bald, salt and pepper goatee, crow’s feet – but musically, he sounds incredible and has only gotten better with time.

Eric Andrews-Katz: Who were your earliest influences in becoming a performer?

Chester Gregory: I grew up in Gary, Indiana and so a major influence for me was, of course, Michael Jackson. Then there is also, in addition, other performers such as Gregory Hines, Ben Vereen, and Sammy Davis, Jr. Andrews-Katz: Jackie Wilson is a repeating figure in your life. What is it about this

man that has influenced your career?

Gregory: There has always been a trifecta in my life. Jackie Wilson inspired Berry Gordy and Berry Gordy inspired Michael Jackson. Jackson got a lot of his influence for style, charisma and dance moves from Wilson. Then going back further, it was Jackie Wilson that gave Berry Gordy his start when he let Gordy write “Reet Petite” for him. It became a hit, and it was from Wilson’s support

that Gordy recognized his self worth. That gave Gordy the courage to start his own label.

When I was growing up and studying Michael Jackson, I went back and found Jackie Wilson.

I became a huge fan and now am close to his family, his son, and grandchildren. It’s been a pivotal point in my career to celebrate Jackie Wilson, the man and artist.

Broadway Seattle run. Why didn’t you stay with the show through its Broadway opening?

Gregory: I’m not sure to be honest. We all have a point where we… I try to focus on the journey; what I learned, from doing Shrek in Seattle. I love Seattle, that part of the country is beautiful and the city has wonderful food.

I think what was needed [for me from Shrek] was fulfilled; it completed its purpose in my life and prepared me for the next thing, which was doing Dream Girls. I was grateful to have the opportunity working in Shrek with Brian D’Arcy James, Sutton Foster, and KeciaLewis Evans.

Andrews-Katz: Your connection with Motown began early in your career. What was it like to sing for Michael Jackson, the King of Pop? Gregory: It was a dream come true! It was the summer of 2003 and I had just concluded the run of The Jackie Wilson Story, at the Apollo Theatre in New York. After that I auditioned for Hairspray and I got the part of “Seaweed.” The same week I performed for Michael Jackson, so I was on Cloud 9! They asked if I would be part of a Special Performance for Michael. Most of the performers did Michael Jackson songs, but I did a Jackie

Wilson song. I introduced it by saying that I knew how much Jackie Wilson influenced Michael, and he gave me a standing ovation when I finished. I was determined to meet him and somehow got past all the security, both at the theatre and Michael’s personal security. As he was rushed by, I screamed out “Jackie Wilson,” and that got his attention. I was ushered through and got to shake his hand and thanked him for inspiring me. It was all very surreal.

Andrews-Katz: How did you choose the specific music for your solo CD In Search of High Love?

Gregory: I wanted to have a project that encompassed the whole idea of Love. It’s the story of searching for love, trying to find that person that is right for you, then ultimately ending up finding that person in yourself and learning how to love yourself, so you can align with finding that perfect someone else. It’s a journey of finding self-love. I worked with some of my favorite producers on this: P.J. Martin, After One… and it includes heavy influences from my friend, J. Dilla. It’s a project dear to my heart. I co-wrote about 70% of the material.

Andrews-Katz: Do people recognize you from your appearance on the Video Game

“Grand Theft Auto – Liberty City”?

Gregory: You can’t see me, I only do a Voice Over, but so far there hasn’t been any recognition of my voice. I was a character screaming things like, “Die Mother Fucker!”, it was a very interesting session. They kept on telling me to be “more mean.” I, literally, yelled for about 60 minutes one day. I would love to do more Voice Overs. I’ve done a few Peter H. Reynolds books, Ish, and a few others. I love working with them.

Andrews-Katz: How did the audition for the role of Motown’s Berry Gordy come about?

Gregory: Actually, it’s the anniversary (this month) of my meeting Berry Gordy for the first time. When Motown opened in L.A., I knew people in the show. I got random calls on opening night from my friends Allison Semmes [who portrayed Diana Ross] and Jarran Muse [Marvin Gaye]. One of them got me a ticket to the opening night performance and one got me a ticket to the opening night cast party. I remember posting that I hoped to meet Berry Gordy. I got to meet Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder. I had no idea at that time that I’d be in the show.

Emily Linder has had a realization. She’s going to die in a couple of days. She tells her daughters, who have mixed feelings of belief, and demands that they plan her funeral. But she tells them exactly what she wants to have at the funeral, including helium balloons!

So begins the current play, The Realization of Emily Linder, at Taproot Theatre.

Playwright Richard Strand includes a lot of contemporary stressors of families: elder care issues, managing illness, losses of spouses in later life, adult children coping with aging parents, sibling rivalry and more.

Now, this is no shrinking violet of a mother. Mrs. Linder, played with gravelly glee by Laura Kenny, is strong-willed, domineering, demanding and a huge pain in the ass. It’s a wonder her daughters (played by Helen Harvester and Charity Parenzini) are still there to help her when she is confined to a wheelchair and has just lost her toes to her disbelief in doctors and hospitals.

In fact, she’s also just fired her last caregiver, and is about to fire the new one Janet (Harvester) brings in the door, Jennifer (Annelih GH Hamilton), until Jennifer finds a unique way to overcome Emily’s resistance. We just know that Jennifer knows her way around cranky elders!

see me for the show. I sent in four or five audition tapes and eventually they brought me into the rehearsal studio in L.A. I walked in and got to meet Berry Gordy. By then the jitters were gone (since I had met him before) and I focused on the work. He gave me some pointers and I made those adjustments. I got the call a week later that I got the job. I’m excited because Berry Gordy will be at one of the Seattle performances, and this will be the first time he’s seen me perform from the audience.

Andrews-Katz: Is it easier or more difficult to play a real-life person than a fictional one?

Gregory: What I enjoy as an actor, whether it’s a fictional character or not, is to find the truth. That’s my job to find the truth of the character, and live in that truth. When portraying a real life icon that’s passed on, like Jackie Wilson, I live on the research, and study the footage, reading all types of articles. When it comes time to do it, I throw all that away and trust what I’ve learned will be enough. I don’t have things preplanned, so I get to the scene and see how it evolves. I like to think about what Meryl Streep once said: “Acting is not about being someone different. It’s about finding the similarities in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there.”

Andrews-Katz: If you could play any role – regardless of any limitations – what would it be and why?

Gregory: I would love to be “The Wiz” in The Wiz. That has always been one of my dream roles to play. Andre de Shields [originator of the role on Broadway] is a mentor of mine, and I remember seeing him perform later on as The Wiz. I got a chance to see Stephanie Mills [original Dorothy] and Andre de Shields. “The Wiz” is such a fun character to play with depth and range. He’s the boss. The music is great music, and I would love to play that role at some point.

Chester Gregory has appeared Off-Broadway in The Jackie Wilson Story. On Broadway, he created the roles of “Berry Gordy” (Motown, the Musical), “Eddie Souther” (Sister Act, the Musical), “Dupree” (Cry-Baby), and “Terk” (Disney’s Tarzan), as well as taking over the role of “Seaweed” in Hairspray.

His solo album In Search of High Love was released in 2008.

has always had a natural instinct for where a joke lands and so land them she does. Even when she is being her meanest, the audience can tell that she is frustrated and really loves her children. This is part of the charm that Kenny brings to the role. It is quite possible a different actor could make the audience hate her!

Harvester and Parenzini do a nice job of being supportive, but put-upon, daughters and rivals. Hamilton is wonderful as the takecharge caregiver who knows exactly how to wind her charge around her finger.

Though it will make many identify with their own lives, the humor masks the pain, and the open question, “Is Emily right?”, keeps the audience guessing until the end. This is a heart-warming slice of family life that makes it clear they love each other deeply. Even if no one says it at all.

It’s a tight-knit cast and a fun, suspenseful ride. Watch Kenny, a Seattle vet of many stages, run her family ragged as only Emily Linder can.

Wild and crazy Nice Guys a hilarious L.A. noir

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE NICE GUYS Now playing Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) isn’t a detective, but he’s very good at dealing with problems. For a price, he’ll mess up those messing with his clients, doing what needs to be done to make sure the message to cease, desist and, most of all, stay away is understood. It’s a job he’s quite proud of, and he’s got the bloodied brass knuckles to prove it.

Holland March (Ryan Gosling) is a private investigator. He’s also a single father, his teenage daughter Holly (Angourie Rice) far better at taking care of him than he is of her. Still, once upon a time, before his wife’s untimely death, before the chainsmoking and the alcoholism, he was a pretty good detective, and every now and then the itch there is more going on with a case than meets the eye leads him to uncover truths few others would have surmised.

Cribbing from a number of his bestknown scripts, mainly Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout and most notably his 2005 directorial debut Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Shane Black’s The Nice Guys is freewheeling, 1970s-set, comedic Los Angeles noir that makes up in laughs what it lacks in originality or coherence. Co-writing the script alongside Anthony Bagarozzi, the movie is an unruly, vulgar, uncouth and unashamedly violent romp through a number of genre conventions, all of them servicing a Chinatown meets The Big Sleep meets L.A. Confidential-style thriller that’s so joyfully entertaining it almost doesn’t matter if little of the darn mystery makes a lick of sense.

Everything revolves around a missing girl, Amelia (Margaret Qualley), and the plethora of interested parties who are eager to ascertain her whereabouts. This includes Judith Kuttner (Kim Basinger), the young woman’s mother, who also just so happens to be an attorney for the Justice Department, who hires March and Healy to find her before any of the others do, the two forming an uneasy partnership as they try to figure out what is going on and why. It all

revolves around the California porn industry, Detroit’s Big Three automakers and the late ’70s environmental protest movement, mayhem and death tracking Amelia’s every move for reasons too convoluted to try and explain.

The whole thing is absurd, and part of me can’t help but think it is purposefully so, Black playing with a number of hard-boiled genre conventions much in the same way he did with the astonishingly underrated Kiss

Kiss Bang Bang. It even follows something of a similar game plan what with two mismatched sleuths stumbling into a partnership as they assemble a crazy, disjointed puzzle the pieces of which don’t look like they’ll ever fit together until they miraculously do. Here, he also throws in 13-yearold Holly (reminiscent of The Last Boy Scout and The Long Kiss Goodnight, Black never one to shy away from putting kids in perilous situations), the youngster argu-

ably the smartest player on the court, figuring out the ins and outs of the mess they’re all stranded within long before any of the adults do.

But, make no mistake, this is the Crowe and Gosling show right from the start. Both actors not only show sparkling comedic rapport, they also go out of their respective ways to give each of their relatively one-dimensional antiheroes having layers and complexities that the script only hints at. The latter shows zero fear as far as looking like a fool is concerned, while the former brings a battle-scarred emotional weariness to things that’s a little surprising. More than that, though, the two have an almost Abbott and Costello-like air to their interactions that’s hysterical. Even the nastier portions of the film have a comedic bent that’s made infectious almost entirely thanks to them, Crowe and Gosling proving to be as inspired a pairing of major male stars as any in recent memory.

It all does feel more than a little too thin at times, almost as if Black and Bagarozzi were one more rewrite away from crafting something truly special. The majority of the villains feel like thinly crafted afterthoughts, while Matt Bomer’s primary thug is nowhere near as menacing as I kept hoping he would be. As for the identity of those pulling the strings, figuring that out is easy (and, admittedly, not exactly the point), so there’s little shock and even less awe as Healy and March realize little, if anything, is going to work out as they both hoped it would.

I like the ruthlessness of it all, however, Black not even slightly afraid to push the envelope almost as far as he can. There’s also a strong case to be made that he and Bagarozzi have crafted a love story of sorts here, the playful, almost romantic give and take between the two heroes ultimately kind of sweet, Healy and March appearing to plant the seeds of a relationship that could at some point progress far beyond platonic. Featuring crackerjack action sequences and bursting with an infectious sense of humor that’s laugh-out-loud hilarious, The Nice Guys is a major blast, Crowe and Gosling having the time of their lives bringing all this madcap, blood-splattered lunacy to life.

Bold Apocalypse as ambitious as it is flawed

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Now playing Centuries after he was buried deep within the recesses of the Earth underneath the modern day city of Cairo, the world’s first mutant En Sabah Nur (Oscar Isaac) has awakened.

It is 1983 and much has changed, humanity a warmongering race seemingly intent on achieving its own eventual destruction, stigmatizing all that it doesn’t understand and forcing those who are different to fear the light of day. This will not stand, and the all-powerful being, oftentimes referred to in hushed tones by his followers as Apocalypse, intends on showing the humans what fear really is and that the face of God looks much like his own.

To assist him, En Sabah Nur enlists the help of fellow mutants Ororo Munroe, a.k.a.

Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy)

and Psylocke (Olivia Munn), imbuing them with additional power and tasking them to protect him from harm. He also pursues Erik Lehnsherr, a.k.a. Magneto (Michael Fassbender), using the man’s pain at the loss of all he has loved as a tool to bend the master of metal to his genocidal designs. While she has spent the decade clandestinely fighting for mutant rights, Prof. X has continued to make his School for Gifted Youngsters a safe haven for

those just starting to understand their powers.

While initially working at cross-purposes, longtime series director Bryan Singer and his usual cadre of writers (Simon Kinberg, Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris) don’t keep them that way for long. With Magneto the focal point of their efforts, Prof. X and Mystique join forces to stand against En Sabah Nur, a cavalcade of new, if still familiar, heroes, a lineup that includes Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan) and Kurt Wagner (Kodi Smit-McPhee), assisting them in their fight.

It’s a lot of material, especially when XMen: First Class C.I.A. Agent Moira Mactaggert (Rose Byrne), the beastly Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult), the speedy Peter Maximoff (Evan Peters) and the always nefarious Col. William Stryker (Josh Helman) are added into the mix, each playing a key role in making sure the X-Men assemble and En Sabah Nur is stopped from completing his task. Unlike Days of Future Past, it’s time-bending plot spanning both the original trilogy of XMen features as well as this new one, Singer

and company are not always able to keep a clear handle on all that is taking place. At the same time, Apocalypse is the boldest, most audacious entry in this series to date, descending into places of despair, tragedy and chaos the likes of which are often spellbinding. Even if all of it doesn’t work, enough of it did to keep me engaged, everything building to a powerful conclusion of sacrifice and courage that speak to the larger themes at play nicely.

If anything, this final chapter in Singer’s second mutant trilogy (he’s had a hand in five of the six primary X-Men films, the execrable X-Men: The Last Stand the only one he didn’t have input in) is best during its quieter moments. En Sabah Nur’s introduction to Ororo Munroe is masterful, the demonic being assisting her in a time of need, utilizing a few wisps of desert sand and a sandstone wall as weapons of dreadful destruction that are insidiously inspired. Even better is Magneto’s relapse into evil, the look of devastation and heartbreak that washes over him as all he cur-

rently holds dearest to his heart is accidentally stripped away an emotional firestorm of misery and regret I didn’t see coming.

As far as the newcomers are concerned, Grey and Summers, a.k.a. Cyclops, are pleasingly introduced, Singer and company planting the seeds for their relationship, as well as the former’s fiery future transformation, with an intelligent confidence that does both characters proud. Sheridan and Turner have terrific chemistry, almost on par with that of their X-Men and X2: X-Men United counterparts James Marsden and Famke Janssen, and the potential for them to become equally as memorable is certainly there. Smit-McPhee is also good as the teleporting Wagner, a.k.a. Nightcrawler, and if the movie itself doesn’t always know exactly how to best use him that doesn’t make his empathetic, delicately modulated performance less wonderful.

The same cannot be said for Shipp, Munn or Hardy, the latter two in particular given so little to do they’re really nothing more than faceless mutants fighting for En Sabah Nur for no other reason than the story requires them to otherwise the last act featuring mutant on mutant violence wouldn’t transpire.

Shipp emerges out of this the best of the three, and I would like to see where she might take the character next. But as depicted in this adventure, Storm is nothing more than a lost little lamb looking for a strong, parental figure to tell her everything is going to be okay

and that her future will end up being one she can be proud of, making her nowhere near as memorable as I hoped she would be.

Like Days of Future Past, Peters again steals the film’s best singular moment. But while the essence of it is similar to what happened the last time around, Singer ends the sequence with a tragic denouement that forces Maximoff, a.k.a. Quicksilver, to rethink his abilities and his own cocky confidence like he never has before. It’s a brief scene, one that is over before you even know it, but the emotional core driving it screams volumes, augmenting the themes of tolerance, heroism, sacrifice and compassion roiling throughout the film with breathless ease.

Unlike Captain America: Civil War, stuff actually happens in X-Men: Apocalypse, the movie not a prequel for future adventures but instead a self-contained story where choices matter and decisions have life-shattering consequences. While nowhere near as easygoing or as uncomplicatedly likable as its superhero sibling, there’s so much more to mull over and think about that I couldn’t help but respond to this comic book adaptation much more completely than I did its May predecessor. While it might be getting close to time for Singer to step away from the franchise and let someone else pick up the reins, I still liked his latest XMen effort quite a bit, flaws and all, the aspirations fueling it almost as super as they are heroic.

Pithy, pitch-perfect Love & Friendship is a witty treat

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer LOVE & FRIENDSHIP Now playing Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale) has come to Churchill for a variety of reasons, the most important one being that, at the moment, there isn’t anywhere else for her to go. A widow looking after teenage daughter Frederica (Morfydd Clark), she is inclined to impose upon her magnanimous brother-inlaw Charles Vernon (Justin Edwards) and his somewhat befuddled, if kind-hearted, young wife Catherine DeCourcy Vernon (Emma Greenwell). While the former welcomes Lady Susan with open arms, the latter is justifiably suspicious, rumors of her supposed dalliances with members of polite British society quietly spoken about in drawing rooms throughout the country.

American Alicia Johnson (Chloë Sevigny) is Lady Susan’s best friend and confidant. But she has been ordered by her sanctimonious husband the “very respectable” Mr. Johnson (Stephen Fry) to stay away from her on pain of being shipped back across the Atlantic, a threat she rarely takes seriously but still remains eternally aware of. Things get truly awkward when the jealous Lady Lucy Manwaring (Jenn Murray) starts spouting accusations to all who will listen, the woman certain her husband Lord Manwaring (Lochlann O’Mearáin) has fallen for Lady Susan’s charms.

Based on Jane Austen’s earliest known novella Lady Susan, writer/director Whit Stillman’s Love & Friendship is an absolute treasure trove of delights big, small and gloriously in-between. The man behind modern classics like Metropolitan and The Last Days of Disco, the filmmaker reunites the stars of that latter 1998 sensation, Beckinsale and Se-

vigny, and in the process brings to life what will easily end up being one of 2016’s best motion pictures. Funny, heartwarming, emotional, tragic, life-affirming, and most of all entertaining, this blissful frolic is so magnificent I can’t think of one negative word to say about a single second of it.

There’s a lot going on here, far more than a brief synopsis can describe. We are witness to love triangles galore, filled with mischievous machinations on the part of Lady Susan as she attempts to secure futures for both herself and her daughter. There are gifts of sincerity and love that defy expectation, while accusations of the foulest sort are bandied about with almost nothing in the way of supporting evidence. Through it all, there is an observational candor to this battle between the sexes that is refreshing in its candor and in its wit, and even though events take place in the latter stages of the 18th century much of what is discussed and debated is every bit as insightful now as it ever was then.

Beckinsale is a revelation. Always a strong actress who has never quite gotten her due, early performances in Much Ado About Nothing, Cold Comfort Farm and, of course, The Last Days of Disco notwithstanding, thanks to her time spent in cheesy spectacles like the Underworld adventures and forgettable thrillers like Whiteout, it’s been sadly easy to take her for granted. This is simply impossible here, Beckinsale infusing Lady Susan with a cagey tenacity that is sublime.

This is a lively, rambunctious performance that is filled with rhetorical nuance, the actress a pithy sensation who delivers putdowns, canny societal observations and declarations of motherly affection with magnetic relish.

Even more impressive is Stillman’s script.

This is early Austen, and while elements of future timeless masterpieces like Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility are evident, it’s also just as clear the author was still in the process of finding her voice with this

particular novella. Stillman manages to take Austen’s words and ideas and transform them into something amazing, celebrating all we love about the novelist while at the same time crafting a narrative that fits right in with the director’s small, if still impressive, filmography. The clarity of how each character interacts and fits alongside the others is magnificent, themes of empowerment, female equality, self-determination and sexual freedom all delivered with refreshingly quirky candor.

There are some stunning set pieces, not the least of which revolves around the arrival of a suitor, Sir James Martin (played to comedic perfection by Tom Bennett), for Frederica’s affections at Churchill and his bemused

fascination with elements ranging from poetry to peas. Additionally, all of the tête-à-têtes between Lady Susan and Alicia Johnson are superb, their snooty guilelessness dripping in acidic insight as they each make sense of the travails the other is currently going through.

The film’s 92 minutes pass by so quickly it’s all over almost as soon as it begins, everything building to a smashing conclusion that had me wanting to leap from my seat and give Stillman, his production team and his entire cast one long, rousing, vigorous cheer. Love & Friendship is magnificent, and anyone saying otherwise is in my eyes one gouty attack away from objectionable ignominy.

When Mina Miller founded Music of Remembrance (MOR) 18 years ago, she probably didn’t imagine that her tiny organization would one day commission and stage a full-length opera. That day came this week, with the triumphant world premiere of Out of Darkness, the result of a decade-long collaboration between Miller and the team of composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer.

The two acts of Out of Darkness are based on the true stories of two Holocaust survivors: the Polish dissident Krystyna Zywulska (19141993) and the Gay German Jew Gad Beck (1923-2012), whose lover Manfred Lewin perished at Auschwitz. Zywulska hid her Jewish identity and was incarcerated as a political prisoner, also at Auschwitz. She lifted the spirits of her fellow prisoners by writing poems and song lyrics, which were passed around the camp and became anthems of resistance.

The opera portrays Zywulska and Beck in later life, with flashbacks to the Holocaust.

Both have survived but are haunted by their younger selves, their losses, and the compromises they have made.

Because the opera is based on three song cycles written by Heggie and Scheer on commission from MOR, I doubted that the result would be a satisfying drama. Was I ever wrong! From the first note to the last, this opera grips the audience by the throat and the heart.

The central conflict for both Zywulska and Beck is the internal struggle between the desire to forget and the need to remember. In Act 1, an aging Zywulska can’t sleep because she has been asked to record her memories. More

tone Michael Mayes as Manfred, all sang and acted magnificently. Baritone Robert Orth, cast in the speaking role of Beck, also got to show off his terrific acting skills. As Zosha, mezzo-soprano Catherine Cook blended well with the other voices in the ensemble numbers but was less effective as an actor and soloist.

The chamber orchestra (five members of the Seattle Symphony and pianist Jessica Choe) simply couldn’t have sounded better.

Special praise is due clarinetist Laura DeLuca, whose long, spirited jazz solo provided the perfect atmosphere for the scene celebrating Gay nightlife in pre-WWII Berlin. Mayes’ wordless vocalise in Act 2 became a gorgeous duet with cellist Walter Gray.

The whole of the opera was so moving that it’s difficult to find highlights to describe. For me, the most affecting section was the waltz sequence in Act 1 – first a delicate Chopin waltz, with ironic lyrics by Zywulska (Krystyna, why are you crying?) and an exquisite vocalise sung by Pines; and then a Johann Strauss waltz wafting into the barracks from an S.S. gathering elsewhere, while Krystyna comforted the dying Zosha.

At the end of Act 2, Gad Beck danced with the ghost of Manfred, in a lovely reconciliation between past and present. A thundering ovation was interrupted by Orth singing a cappella the words of “Farewell, Auschwitz,” Zywulska’s song of defiance, written in Auschwitz and sung secretly by the prisoners there: Stand with me,/ Hold your shaved head high./ The song of freedom upon our lips/ Will never, never die. The other singers and musicians joined in to provide a rousing finish to an extraordinary work. I will never forget this haunting opera of remembrance.

Carroll’s dream becomes a nightmare in Alice Through the Looking Glass

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS Now playing Years after her last visit to a topsy-turvy world where Tweedles Dum and Dee (Matt Lucas) bumble about, a Cheshire Cat (voiced by Stephen Fry) vanishes into thin air, the butterfly Absolem (voiced by Alan Rickman) dispenses advice in cryptic rhyme and the ethereal Queen Mirana (Anne Hathaway) has tea with the March Hare (voiced by Paul Whitehouse), the mercurial Alice Kingsleigh (Mia Wasikowska) has returned to Wonderland. Her friend the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) is in trouble, the eccentric haberdasher slowly losing his marbles over a new obsession regarding his long-dead family.

But are they dead? In a search to discover the truth behind their demise, Alice journeys to the castle of Time (Sacha Baron Cohen) himself, in the process borrowing a small trinket that allows her to transport herself into the past. What she learns doesn’t just shine the light of truth upon the Hatter, but also on Mirana and her sister the wicked Queen of Hearts Iracebeth (Helena Bonham Carter). What Alice didn’t realize is that by stealing this item from Time she’s unwittingly put all of Wonderland in jeopardy, and if the young adventurer doesn’t return it to its proper place soon all residing within the domain will be frozen outside of existence for the rest of eternity.

Alice Through the Looking Glass has about as much to do with author Lewis Carroll’s immortal characters as 2010’s Alice in Wonderland did. In other words: precious little. Once again featuring a screenplay by scribe Linda Woolverton (Maleficent), with director James Bobin (Muppets Most Wanted) taking over for the departed Tim Burton (who stays on as a producer), the movie is every bit as messy, and also as instantly forgettable, as its predecessor.

While the visuals astonish, while a handful of moments amuse, overall this is a frenetic, absurdly chaotic piece of nonsense, one that makes its points with a glib, moralistic superiority that’s as unfortunate as it is unappealing.

Even more so than the first film, most of the human characters are mercilessly overacted, Hathaway and Carter, the latter of who was arguably the best thing about Alice in Wonderland, strangely enough, the most egregious culprits on that front. Both of them are a chore to be around, almost from the first second they appear on the screen, while minor secondary characters portrayed by the likes of Ed Speleers and Andrew Scott are so incessantly cartoonish they’re instantly laughable. Oddly, Depp, caked in the same clownish makeup, clad in a variety of colorful, imaginatively bizarre costumes designed once again by the great Colleen Atwood (Into the Woods, Chicago), is subtly charming this go-around, and if only he’d been given more of interest to do, he might have made something worthwhile out of at least some of this obnoxious tedium.

But, even with the story essentially revolving around him, his family and their not-nearly-as-complex-as-you-might-surmise history of hat making in the world of Wonderland, there’s actually precious little for the Hatter to do. Even with Alice traipsing back through the years, he’s something of a non-presence, making his ultimate thrust to the center of all the chaos during the last act silly as it is unwarranted.

Instead, it is Mirana and Iracebeth’s childhoods that stiff-arm their way to the center of the stage, the whole movie coming down to a did not-did too argument that’s every bit as infantile as it sounds.

It is visually stunning, and as amazing as the effects work and the CGI worldbuilding in Alice in Wonderland was, it is even more impressive this time around.

Watching Alice zip through the oceans of time, seeing her interact with the menagerie of colorful characters, it’s all pretty eye-popping. Best of all is Time’s castle,

populated with a bunch of steampunk, Miyazaki-like minions all of whom are rather extraordinary. Topping it off, Cohen actually delivers a full-bodied, richly complex performance notable for, of all things, its emotional subtlety, bringing to life a character that’s so intriguing I’m slightly tempted to recommend the movie for him and him alone.

Only slightly. The script is a daffy, onedimensional slog that does a disservice to its source material, and while the talented Wasikowska is as game as ever, throwing herself into this mess with all kinds of courageous gusto, truth be told her Alice, while as selfless as ever, is also something of an exasperating nincompoop. Her dimwittedness mixed with her bullheaded approach to things as they pertain to Hatter’s misfortunes grow increasingly tiresome, and even when the eventual epiphany for the heroine comes, it’s too little, too late as far as caring about the outcome for her, or anyone else involved with this story is concerned.

Look, I didn’t hate Alice in Wonderland, and I do not hate Alice Through the Looking Glass, either. I just find them both to be equally disposable, equally unremarkable. While little touches here and there can’t help but excite the senses, the lack of a nuanced story or intriguing characterizations makes maintaining interest for all two hours utterly ridiculous. In his book, Carroll coyly asks, “Life, what is it but a dream?” Sadly, in this adaptation, the dream has been transformed into a nightmare. And when I say nightmare, I mean it, because much like the author when I use a word, it means just what I choose it to mean – neither more, nor less.

Jonas and Demi Lovato are just some of the musicians who removed concerts in North Carolina from their tour itineraries. Maroon 5 is scheduled to perform at Key Arena in Seattle on October 11; tix are available via Ticketmaster.

Maroon 5 is the latest music act to cancel shows in North Carolina in protest of the state’s anti-LGBTQ bathroom law. The pop band, led by Adam Levine, axed two concerts from its long-running “Maroon V Tour,” its September 11 show in Charlotte (Time Warner Cable Arena) and the September 12 performance in Raleigh (PNC Arena). “This was a difficult decision for us to make as a band,” the group stated on its official website. “We don’t want to penalize our fans in North Carolina by not performing for them, but in the end it comes down to what we feel is morally right AS WE FEEL EVERYONE SHOULD BE TREATED EQUALLY.” Levine’s brother is openly Gay. Maroon 5 joins a growing list of artists who’ve canceled appearances in the Tar Heel State, due to its controversial HB2 law. Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Starr, Nick

Here is the latest batch of artists coming to Seattle in the coming months: R&B singer Chrisette Michelle will perform at The Showbox SoDo on August 6, Grammy-winning alternative rock band Wilco will appear back-to-back nights on September 2 and 3 at the Moore Theatre, singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur is playing The Triple Door on September 15 and folkpop artist Paula Cole is headed to The Triple Door on October 29, as are a pair of ’70s acts, Al Stewart and Gary Wright on October 12.
