by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer Beyonce is among the artists who decided to perform in North Carolina, appearing at Raleigh’s Carter-Finley Stadium on May 2 as part of “The Formation World Tour.” But the pop-R&B superstar didn’t ignore the controversy happening right now in the Tar Heel state. Instead, she offered her voice in support of bringing the HB2 law down. “It is important for us to bring attention to those who are committed to being good and carrying on the message of equality in this core of controversy,” she stated on her website. “Among the many organizations doing the good work to get this bill overturned, there is Equality NC, a local organization dedicated to securing equal rights and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) North Carolinians.” Her full statement can read at beyonce.com.

Beyonce will perform May 18 at CenturyLink Field here in Seattle.

Due to popular demand, an additional “I Love the ’90s Tour” concert will be staged at the Tacoma Dome on August 26, a day before the previously announced show at Marymoor Park (August 27). Aerosmith lead singer and former “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler is coming to Seattle for a solo performance, touted as “Steven Tyler...Out on a Limb”.

The intimate concert experience is said to feature music by Tyler and his Nashvillebased backup band, Loving Mary, plus stories from his childhood and his career as a frontman for the legendary rock group. The Seattle concert is set for July 8 at McCaw Hall, just a few days after the tour launches at the Venetian Theater in Las Vegas. Tickets for Steven Tyler are available through LiveNation.com.

The Washington State Fair concert lineup is complete, kicking off September 4 with country hottie Tim McGraw, followed by Creedence Clearwater Revisited on September 7, For King & Country with Matt Maher on September 12, Charlie Wilson with Joe on September 16, Alan Jackson on September 17, Chris Young with Cassadee Pope on September 19, Dierks Bentley on September 22 and Train with Magic! on September 25. Die Antwoord has announced a summer tour date in Redmond, July 15 at Marymoor Park. The South African trio have yet to reveal details on a new album, although the name has been changed three times already; currently it’s being titled We Have Candy.

The Dolly Parton concert at Kent’s ShoWare Center on September 21 is already sold out; all tickets were purchased within 20 minutes from the time they went on sale. No word yet on additional tour dates.

Moreno was a 2015 Kennedy Center Honors inductee, invited into the prestigious group of artists last December. Tickets for each of her concerts are available at the respective venue box offices.

If you haven’t listened to Radiohead’s brand new single “Burn the Witch,” do it now. Now! It’s a haunting, upbeat track with an intense orchestral arrangement at the end. The British four-piece released the track and music video on May 2 to fans and by 8 p.m. (PST) that evening it had been viewed over 2.2 million times on YouTube. The band is expected to announce proper tour dates soon, aside from its scattered festival appearances; Radiohead last played Seattle in 2012, at Key Arena. The music video, directed by Chris Hopewell, is creepy as hell, yet really cool.

Finally, Celine Dion will receive the ICON Award and Britney Spears will be given the Millennium Award at the upcoming Billboard Music Awards, scheduled for May 22 in Las Vegas. Spears is set to perform a medley of her hits on the ceremony, which will also feature performances by Nick Jonas, Demi Lovato, Pink, Justin Bieber, The Go-Go’s, Tove Lo, Shawn Mendes and DNCE. Dion will appear on the telecast, as well, and has chosen to sing “My Heart Will Go On.” Previous ICON Award recipients are Prince, Stevie Wonder, Neil Diamond and Jennifer Lopez. The Billboard Music Awards are being co-hosted by Ludacris and Ciara.

James Bay is superb at The Showbox SoDo

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer JAMES BAY THE SHOWBOX SODO April 28 When James Bay released “Let It Go,” it was the kind of song that stopped people in their tracks. If they were at a grocery store, a coffee shop, or a bank lobby, they took notice. That soulful voice gliding beautifully over a gentle guitar background was infectious, to say the least.

Fortunately, there was more to come.

His debut album Chaos and the Calm produced five hit singles, certified doubleplatinum in Bay’s native U.K. with nearly 650,000 copies sold and reached #15 on the U.S. charts. And last December, the 25 year-old earned three Grammy nominations, including a nod for Best New Artist.

Sold out concerts are usual occurrences on the English musician’s schedule these days, including an April 28 performance at The Showbox SoDo that filled the room from wall to wall. Bay’s set opened with “Collide,” as the 6-foot tall singer-songwriter crooned and played a red electric guitar dressed entirely in black – jeans, tee-shirt, fedora hat, boots. He then performed “Craving” and “When We Were on Fire”; the latter number got the audience clapping their hands over their heads.

Fans didn’t have to wait long for “Let It Go,” which featured a guitar solo intro and quiet drum rattle at the beginning. It was a gorgeous rendition worth half the ticket price alone. For kicks, Bay played a brief instrumental solo version of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” A fiery run-through of “Get Out While You Can” capped the main set, as fans again clapped their hands together high above their heads, or bounced energetically up and down.

A three-song encore included a cover of The Band’s “Look Out Cleveland” with supporting act Joseph, an all-female folkish trio based in Portland. “Incomplete” was also performed in this extra portion of the show, as was the night’s closing number, perhaps a song many came to hear specifically, an upbeat, sweet delivery of “Hold Back the River.” It was the perfect finale for an overall memorable concert.

In February, Bay was honored with the Brit Award for Best British Male Solo Artist, a category in which he beat out four global electronic performers, Aphex Twin, Mark Ronson, Calvin Harris and Jamie xx. He’ll spend the summer months touring in Europe and Asia, before returning stateside in the fall for a few dates in the Southwest. survivors: the Polish dissident Krystyna Zywulska (1914-1993) and the Gay German Jew Gad Beck (1923-2012), whose lover Manfred Lewin perished at Auschwitz . Zywulska hid her Jewish identity and was incarcerated as a political prisoner, also at Auschwitz. She lifted the spirits of her fellow prisoners by writing poems and song lyrics, which were passed around the camp and became anthems of resistance.

The opera portrays Zywulska and Beck in later life, with flashbacks to the Holocaust.

Both have survived but are haunted by their younger selves, their losses, and the compromises they have made. The result, says MOR artistic director Mina Miller, is “a compelling story of love, courage, and remembrance.”

In a phone interview, Heggie put forth the basic questions of this opera: “What will you leave for the future? What will you give to future generations?”

Originally, Miller and Heggie envisioned that Out of Darkness would be a back-toback performance of three song cycles (two about Zywulska and one about Beck and Lewin) commissioned by MOR and written

by Heggie and Scheer over the past decade.

Scheer’s reaction, according to Miller, was “No! That’s not an opera. We need to weave this material into a cohesive whole, a gripping evening of musical theater.” Heggie immediately agreed. “I’m a pragmatic composer,” he says. “I like big stories, stories that can be programmed.”

Of Heggie, Miller says, “His music

speaks to the heart. He knows how to capture characters in all their complexity. His works leave you forever changed, whether you consider yourself an opera lover or not.”

Heggie has words of equally high praise for Miller and describes their ten-year collaboration as “one of the best experiences of my life. As an artist, you yearn to write things that have meaning, depth, resonance.

It all comes back to Mina and her vision.”

For the premiere, Miller has assembled an excellent cast, several of whom are familiar to MOR audiences: sopranos Caitlin Lynch and Ava Pine, mezzo-soprano Catherine Cook, and baritone Robert Orth. Baritone Michael Mayes, who will sing the role of Manfred, has garnered rave reviews as the title character of Heggie’s opera Dead Man Walking. Erich Parce is the stage director, and Joseph Mechavich will conduct the five singers and six instrumentalists.

Out of Darkness: An Opera of Survival will premiere at the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall (3rd Ave. & Union St.) on Sunday, May 22 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $45 general admission; $30 for under 30. In addition to the concert Music of Remembrance will host a gala dinner in honor of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer immediately following the concert at the Norcliffe Founders Room. New Holmes mystery has an American Problem, but is still fun

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE AMERICAN PROBLEM SEATTLE REPERTORY THEATRE Through May 22 Our community has had some real successes bringing new Sherlock Holmes material to life in the last few years. John Longenbaugh had his Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Christmas Carol done to great acclaim in 2010 and again in 2011.

In 2013, the Seattle Rep staged R. Hamilton Wright and David Pichette’s adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles.

That also was greeted with delight.

There was a good deal of anticipation when the Rep announced that they would do another Holmes play from Wright (without Pichette this time), a new work

continued from cover Willy Loman, the iconic title character, is the American Idiot, he is the dreamer seeking a new mañana like the kitchen workers in My Mañana Comes, and he is like the scarred and disillusioned Violet yearning for acceptance with a wonderful new life.

Death of a Salesman portrays the final days of downtrodden salesman Willy Loman and his broken family in Brooklyn in 1949.

He squabbles with his well-built, handsome sons (Biff and Happy) about their missed opportunities of success with the American

entitled Sherlock Holmes and the American Problem. This concept entwines historic American Annie Oakley and her lauded visit to Britain with a mystery involving murder, theft of a tunnel-boring machine (deliberate shades of Bertha!), and Sherlock’s estranged older brother.

Many of the talented and fun cast of the 2013 Sherlock have returned for more fun. Darragh Keenan reprises his role as the irascible and temperamental Holmes and Andrew McGinn as his sidekick Dr. Watson. Marianne Owen comes back as the redoubtable housekeeper, and Rob Burgess and Charles Leggett chime in with smaller characters.

In addition, this time, Cheyanne Casebier plays a mysterious American scientist who has lost her boring machine, Alex Matthews and Tim Gouran are ensemble members, and Christine Marie Brown plays Miss Phoebe Anne Moses, who

dream. He reprimands them that all they need to be is “well-liked” and charming to make it in the business world and, therefore, life. Linda, his weary yet virtuous wife, puts up with his behavior and somewhat enables him. Willy’s biggest beef is with Biff who was once a promising high school football player.

However, something in their past continues to gnaw on the fibers that hold the already frayed Loman’s together. This dramatic tension guides Miller’s famous story.

David Pichette commands Willy’s flawed character and takes the audience on an emotional ride that is unequivocally perfect in its manic expressions: exhilaration, hope, humil-

turns out to also be Annie Oakley (her stage name).

L.B. Morse again does yeoman work on the scenic design and lighting and projections, giving us the hustle of London streets, the maps of the city, and spare set changes that fly in and out in quick location changes. Allison Narver works to direct this game cast, but is hampered at times by underwritten roles and underused talent.

Poor Ms. Owen doesn’t have anything more to do in this iteration than pour endless cups of coffee and serve scones. In the 2013 story, she at least had more than one character, which gave her some real acting to do.

You’re probably now thinking, having read this far, that this isn’t going to be a rave. While there are some good ideas, and sometimes a decent joke or two, the entire work does not hang together well.

It is HARD to write Sherlock Holmes and if it weren’t then lots of people would

do it. Wright grasps many of the aspects of a mystery, but the mystery itself is not always the fun part of a Holmes work, as much as how Holmes solves it and how opaque the clues are to the audience.

Ultimately, it ends up being talky and feels long, and there is a tacked on scene at the end that explains some things we mostly don’t even care to know by that point. It feels generally enjoyable, mostly because of the cast and the gorgeous set and costumes (by Deb Trout). Sometimes, you can appreciate much of an effort, even when it doesn’t all hang together, and still have fun.

iation, terror, and heartbreak. He tramps over every corner of this stage with physical strut and swagger (faux) confidence, to shoulder slump defeat, and to broke and shaking fetal position. The soul-wrenching scene of Willy attempting to plant seeds in his barren yard at night is brilliant as fleshed out by Pichette.

David Pichette’s performance is the finest of the season.

As Biff, Drew Highlands inhabits the beleaguered son with a well-guided character build-up that pays off with a satisfying artistic punch in the gut as the play culminates in its inevitable tragic climax. It is one of the most fitting depictions of this character that I’ve ever seen. Highlands is a treasure to watch.

Eleanor Moseley (as Linda) and Kyle Anton Johnson (the wayward and morally challenged Happy) deliver top-notch performances. While their respective characters don’t offer any absolution for the story, their finelytuned performances are just as outstanding as anything else in this production.

Artistic Director Mathew Wright directs this final production of this season. I admire the decision to have the cast be a part of the set, sitting on the edges of the stage chiming in with their lines as the story progresses. It’s as if they are observers, like ghosts of Christmas present, viewing Willy’s life and his American nightmare ripping his family to shreds.

Wright’s direction allows the themes of the story, such as arrested development and

paralyzing nostalgia among others, from 1949 America to resonate with a 2016 audience. Even as the story hops between time periods of the young and hopeful family to the older and regretful family, Wright manages to keep its relevance in check.

Death of a Salesman is set in a time which people often consider the golden age of America. It’s post-war times with a thriving economy and strong family values. Yet, if you peek into the bricks and windows of the homes sitting on sun-deprived lawns, you see a family afraid of an unseen looming monster. What is it? Uncertainty? Or is it the realization that although we have this wonderful right to pursue happiness or success, that doesn’t mean that they’re necessarily guaranteed to us no matter how bold, bright-smiled, and well-liked we are.

Death of a Salesman goes beyond the father-son conflict and broken American dream tropes to reveal something that is both fascinating and frightening. This is the beauty of Arthur Miller’s play and this production.

Kinky Boots is the hit musical that stomped it’s way all over Broadway – where it is still running. The sensational show (with music and lyrics by the legendary Cyndi Lauper) plays a return engagement to Seattle after it paraded through Seattle to sold-out theatre audiences in October 2014.

Kinky Boots tells the story of the unlikely friendship between Charlie Price, the son who inherits his father’s failing shoefactory, and Lola, a vivacious and exuberant Drag Queen. When the two meet by chance, Charlie comes up with the idea to make a line of shoes distinctively made for men that dress as women. He invites Lola to help him design the new footwear inviting her “larger-than-life” personality into the factory. She visits in full drag, as she commonly dresses, causing many to raise their eyebrows. Charlie has to overcome the mindsets of the blue-collar factory workers, many of whom have never met a Gay person, never mind a female impersonator. As their friendship grows, both men find they not only address the challenges between their own differences, and the ways they think, but also with issues of their pasts, and the relationships between a boy and his father.

Adam Kaplan plays “Charlie Price,” the inheritor of Price & Son Shoe Fac-

tory. While he does a good job in showing the character’s naiveté, his stage presence leaves something to be desired. He seems flat, one dimensional, and even in his 11 o’clock number “Soul of a Man,” his voice seems a bit lacking for such a large role.

Tiffany Engen plays “Lauren,” a worker in the shoe factory who develops a romantic crush on her boss. Her comic aptitude is clearly evident in the song “History of Wrong Guys” as she brilliantly lists her gift

for bad romantic choices. Ms. Engen steals every scene she is in and for good reason; she’s damn funny! From simple body gestures to facial expressions to using her vocal talents, Tiffany Engen shines with every thing she does in this production.

The real star of the show is, without a doubt, J. Harrison Ghee as “Lola.” Lola is a character that commands presence and Mr. Ghee delivers without hesitation. He moves comfortably in high heels giving Lola life

and, more importantly, believability. His voice is soft enough to be feminine when speaking and strong enough to handle Cyndi Lauper’s lyrics and music without ever breaking his character’s boundaries. He is the star of the show and his performance is a delicious reminder as to why that is.

The Ensemble all do an excellent job in the various supporting roles. The three notable roles are: “Nicola,” Charlie’s materialistic girlfriend, played by Charissa Hogeland; “Dan,” the factory man who learns to open his mind, played by Aaron Walpole; and “George,” the factory’s foreman, played by Sam Zeller, in place of Jim J. Bullock who usually plays the role of “George” but was not available on Opening Night. All three performers do very well in their roles, adding to the storyline.

The music and lyrics definitely play a “character” role in this show – as in any good musical. Cyndi Lauper definitely knows her various types of music and excels in all forms. Ranging from “pop” sounds (“Raise You Up”), comical interactions (“What a Woman Wants”), or powerful ballad (“Hold Me in Your Heart”), there is a reason why Ms. Lauper set a precedent for winning her Kinky Boots Tony Award.

Kinky Boots opened on Broadway in March 2013 and is still running in full swing. Based on true events, the 2005 British-American film (starring Chiwetel 12 Years a Slave Ejiofor as “Lola”) is the foundation of the musical. The show made Broadway history giving pop-star Cyndi Lauper the honor of being the first female to achieve a solo win for Best Original Score. The musical was nominated for 13 Tony Awards (2013) and won six including Best Musical.

A highlight of the four-day festival with a Seattle connection is the U.S. premiere of A Womb of Their Own, a documentary that shares the stories of masculine-of-center people at various stages of pregnancy and parenthood. In focused segments, individuals and some couples discuss their decision to birth a child, the unique struggle of navigating reproductive services catering to cisgender women, their shifting relationship to their shifting body, and what it means to deal with gender as a parent.

Subjects Lorenzo and Imelio Ramirez of Wenatchee will attend, along with director Cyn Lubow and cinematographer Elayne Wylie.

Prior to the official opening of the festival, a special screening of Deconstructing Zoe will be held on Sunday, May 8 at 2 p.m. at the Seattle Public Library. The event is a special partnership with Pride ASIA. Deconstructing Zoe is an exploration of gender, race and sexuality, seen through the life and times of Transgender Chinese actor Zoe. Translations: Seattle Transgender Film Festival is a groundbreaking film festival that provides the Pacific Northwest with a venue for films by, for, and about Transgender people and the issues facing the Transgender community. It’s one of only a few Transgender film festivals in the world. The event strives to place emphasis on visibility and positive representations.

Macha Monkey presents El Guindi’s The Collaborator

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer THE COLLABORATOR MACHA MONKEY PRODUCTIONS (AT WEST OF LENIN) Through May 14 Macha Monkey Productions is doing a little world premiere… Little in terms of size of cast – one (Hayley Guthrie).

Little in terms of time – about 75 minutes. But big in terms of playwright – nationally known, but local Yussef El Guindi, and a big dip into female/male sexual politics.

Directed by Anita Montgomery, who has worked with El Guindi on at least two of his plays, the script of The Collaborator begins with an actor, Cass, addressing the audience. She’s dressed in nightclothes and explains that she and her collaborator, whom she clarifies is male, decided on the costume and the set, together.

The actor speaks about the actor-ego, the desire for people to watch an actor, the despair for the actor if people don’t seem interested, the awareness of people yawning, sleeping or leaving. Then she begins to tell a story about walking home from her theater-gig as a French maid in what sounds like a terrible farce where everyone ends the play by slapping each other’s butts.

There are two men walking toward her on a dark street, moments from her house, but she is dressed in the French maid outfit with stage makeup on, and she tells us all the different thoughts that run quickly through her brain, including, “Maybe they’ve just been watching

Hedda Gabler (at a nearby theater) and are discussing Ibsen!”

Of course, they haven’t been discussing Ibsen or watching theater, and it takes a while for us to find out exactly what does happen, as she segues into her relationship with the collaborator, which also has ominous aspects. That’s the heart of what El Guindi wants to explore – the complicated, gray-area, notquite-cut-and-dried moments of sexual interaction when awkward sex drifts into unwanted sex.

imagining variation from the current presentation. The script for The Collaborator has an expansively permissive quality to it. The actor cast in this role and her interpretation of the script could produce a very different feeling or outcome for the audience. Still, there is an unfinished quality to the ending of the script that doesn’t help the audience know what to make of the journey.]

Does El Guindi have a conclusion he’s drawing? Is he trying on a woman’s perspective in order to learn how to better understand women in his life? His choice of writing a woman’s narrative is evocative, but as yet, perhaps, it’s unful-

filled.

Guthrie, new to our region, is a capable actor, and I felt that she was much more successful when she could play a direct emotion and talk to another character. The beginning of the play, in her address to the audience, is far less convincing and the artifice is almost bitingly apparent. She is supposed to put us at ease, and instead, made my teeth sit on edge. I enjoyed what the monologue said, mostly, but the delivery, where she is supposed to be “real,” made me feel like she was the most UN-real of the evening.

Perhaps that is because addressing an audience for an actor is not the normal thing to do. As she transitioned into a different kind of presentation, where she was still supposed to be “herself” but was now telling a made-up story, she becomes a character and, therefore, also comfortable in the role.

There are aspects of a new theater paradigm here that combine in an interesting way to get at a topic that is supremely personal, yet universally applicable. The first-person address might be an awkward lecture or a way to break down the wall between performer and audience to make it easier for us to be dragged into the personal journey. It feels like a worthwhile experiment that can yet go even further before the evening is through.

Captain America and Iron Man face-off in Marvel’s Civil War

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Now playing After their battle against Ultron left an entire city floating perilously in midair with untold numbers of civilians killed during the skirmish, the last thing Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and his Avengers needed was another mission to go south on them. But a confrontation with escaped criminal and Hydra agent Brock Rumlow (Frank Grillo) goes spectacularly wrong, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch, unable to contain the explosion from a hidden bomb, the subsequent blast tearing an adjacent building containing untold innocents to pieces.

In the wake of this madness, new Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt) has negotiated a deal with over a 100 different nations that will create an agency to oversee the Avengers, a plan Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.), Vision (Paul Bettany) and Lieutenant James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) all find themselves agreeing with. Even Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) tentatively thinks this could potentially be a good idea, the former Russian double-agent and assassin starting to believe she and her super-powered compatriots might be doing more harm than good.

It will come as no surprise to anyone buying a ticket to see Marvel’s latest superhero extravaganza Captain America: Civil War that Rogers, along with a number of his fellow Avengers, does not think putting an outside agency in charge of what this group of heroes can and cannot do is such

a good idea. The MacGuffin that pits superhero against superhero is former WWII vet and Captain America’s best friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), the fallen warrior resurrected in secret by Hydra as the Winter Soldier. His mind shattered into pieces, Rogers still feels compelled to protect his former companion, especially after Bucky’s suspected to have murdered the current Wakandan King T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) father T’Chaka (John Kani) during the signing of the accords.

As solid as the majority of the twelve films sitting inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) up to this point have been, Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk and Thor:

The Dark World notwithstanding, the big complaint in regards to a number of them is that the studio is rarely content to let them rest as self-contained stories. Additional elements, all of them setting up adventures, films and sequels still yet to come, are inelegantly shoehorned into the proceedings in ways that are notably obnoxious, oftentimes keeping these stories from reaching their full potential. The worst offender on this front was Avengers: Age of Ultron, so much of that feature’s running time devoted to nonsensical subplots involving characters taking mystical baths and big green behemoths disappearing to who-knowswhere, all so the ultimate big bad can come calling in a pair of sequels not hitting screens for another couple of years.

The weird thing about Civil War, which isn’t so much a direct sequel to Captain America: The Winter Soldier as it is a third Avengers flick, is that it is all prequel, all setup, returning directors Anthony and Joe Russo and series writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely to designing a story where nothing really happens other than the placing of building blocks that will allow the events of subsequent MCU entries to take place. It is a movie more or less devoid of a central villain, a mysterious man by the name of Zemo (Daniel Brühl) orchestrating things behind the scenes, but not in a way that’s close to as nefarious or terrible as is the norm for comic book adventures such as this, and that is also a bizarre oddity that potentially could have some viewers scratching their head wondering what is going on.

Yet the craziest part of all of this is that, somehow, someway, this actually kind of works, the film relying upon the evolution and emotional maturation of its characters to do all of the heavy lifting for it.

Even though the central scenario itself is flimsy, the examination of what actually constitutes heroism, what is an individual’s responsibility to stand up for what is right no matter the cost, those elements are as strong as Captain America’s vibranium shield. This gives things a depth and a heft that the majority of the MCU entries have decidedly lacked, the relationship between Rogers, Stark and Barnes, in particular, put under an intense microscope fan and non-

fan alike will likely find intriguing.

Not that Markus, McFeely and the Russo brothers skimp on the action front. The filmmakers design a number of exhilarating set pieces, not the least of which is a central throw-down between superheroes set at an empty German airport. Iron Man and Captain America face-off with their respective teams in tow, all going after one another with their full array of powers, each certain their point-of-view as it pertains to the accords the correct one. It’s a spectacular sequence that brings back past heroes like Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), a.k.a. Hawkeye, and Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), a.k.a. Ant-Man, while also introducing new ones like King T’Challa’s alter ego the Black Panther and everyone’s favorite friendly neighborhood wall-crawler Peter Parker (Tom Holland), his nom de plume known to just about anyone with a pulse, each showcasing their respective abilities to something bordering on perfection.

All of this being said, as marvelous as Evans continues to be as the titular character, as invested as Downey might be in the outcome of the proceedings (unlike Avengers: Age of Ultron), as glorious as many of the action sequences are, it’s hard to get past the fact that nothing, practically nothing of overall consequence, ends up happening. Sure, characters are left in a different state of being than they were at the start of the story, but as far as actual narrative mechanics are concerned there’s precious little of import that transpires other than the moving of the pieces across the chessboard so that they’re all in proper placement for when the next incarnation of Spider-Man arrives in 2017 and both a new Avengers entry and Black Panther’s solo outing hit screens in 2018.

Captain America: Civil War is fun; it’s too well made, acted and scripted for it to be anything less. But it’s also much ado about nothing, the fact of which is annoying me more and more as time goes by. I still liked the movie, though, and even if it is noticeably weaker than either Captain America: The First Avenger or Captain America: The Winter Soldier it’s still good enough I’m relatively eager to give it a second look sooner rather than later.

Spectrum Dance Theater presents A Rap on Race – a groundbreaking new work a Tony Award for his choreography for the Broadway production of The Color Purple. In 1970, two towering personalities of American intelligentsia sat together and recorded a conversation about the defining subject of the American experience: race. Mead, 68 years old, white and liberal, was the most famous anthropologist of the 20th Century. Baldwin, 46, black, living in exile in France, was one of the most prominent novelists. The two had never met before. Their conversation, carried out in three long sessions over two long days, was tape recorded, transcribed, and published as a book. Now, over 40 years later, two contemporary artistic icons, Smith (best known for her documentary theater style in plays such as Fires in the Mirror and Twilight: Los Angeles) and legendary, local choreographer Donald Byrd, reimagine this monumental moment in history through an evening of devised dance and theater.

In this innovative production featuring the world-renowned dancers of Spectrum Dance Theater, Julie Briskman (The Seagull Project) as Mead, and Donald Byrd as Baldwin, Smith and Byrd excavate the truths buried in the facts of this cultural artifact. But this cultural artifact, though over 40 years old, is far from archaic. “What is heartbreaking for me, is when you listen to these tapes that were recorded in 1970, the conversation is

the same,” states Briskman. “It has not evolved in the way that James Baldwin and Margaret Mead might have imagined that it would. It has not evolved to the point that I imagine most of humanity would have thought it might have.” A Rap On Race will reinvigorate this conversation, providing a forum for honest, non-self-censored conversation – a theme present in all of Spectrum’s 2015-16 #RACEish season.

“Within the current dominant aesthetics of performance, virtuosity is often dismissed as empty display,” Byrd comments.

“In this new work it is used as a means to communicate the complexities involved when talking about race, a topic that is decidedly necessary yet often deemed too difficult to address.” The work will take the form of a series of choreographed “physical duets” played in tandem or juxtaposed with verbal duets gleaned from the Baldwin/Mead tapes.

Byrd and Deavere Smith will use various renditions of the conversation between these two singular 20th Century voices to explore virtuosity, tonality, rhythm to “suss out” the text for signs of its “virtues.” Through an investigation of movement, text, and music, “A Rap on Race” will excavate new meaning from the cultural artifact that will enliven the current conversation around racial and cultural equality.

The physical duets are not fact but rather the explorations and search for truth that cannot be found within the limitations of language. “I think what we are doing in terms of our dance theater is really sort of genre obliterating. For A Rap On Race, dancing and physical theater play together in a unique way that truly reaches people and in essence defines a new sort of theater for the 21st Century,” Byrd concludes.

“A Rap on Race” is a creative inquiry on the role that race and ethnicity plays in our society. It is a quest for a new kind of theatre where movement, dance, text, imagery, music, and sound co-exist to create an experience that nudges, prods, entices, seduces, and provokes the feeling and intellect of the spectator - a theater of mind, senses, and soul.
