by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN A&E Writer A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN 5TH AVENUE THEATRE Through April 17 Janis Joplin was one of the most influential people in rock-n-roll. Her unique voice and no holds barred attitude on music as well as life made her one of the greats. The 5th Avenue Theatre transports us to a concert hall, and A Night With Janis Joplin. While the audience was filled with those who recalled the extraordinary blues artist, it was equally filled with those who either

enjoy (or at least know of) her wondrous legacy. Even if you only know of Janis Joplin’s reputation (in cases like myself), the evening will reveal why Janis Joplin’s story should be shared. It could be any number of performance venues around the country. There’s a place for the band in the back of the stage, and except for the overstuffed chair in the corner, nothing seems out of the ordinary. Janis Joplin appears and starts to sing. Her raspy, powerful voice, as much of her trademark as her casual “Hippie-style” of dress, begins to sound and soon the rafters are ringing with music. Over the course of the night, Janis reiterates that she is a see JANIS JOPLIN page 4

The fabulous Kaya Jones RuPaul on how straight to appear at the Dinah culture takes from the Vegas Gays Kaya Jones, most notably known as one of the lead singers of the Pussycat Dolls (not the brunette one that always sounds like she’s stoned, but the pretty blonde one) took time out of her whirlwind schedule to talk to SGN’s own Teriyaki Temple.

Kaya Jones – DJMD

by David Luc Nguyen SGN A&E Writer Kaya Jones, formerly of the mega girl group, The Pussycat Dolls talks to Seattle Gay News about: Her new fashion line premiering at LA Fashion Week, secrets to looking fabulous on the red carpet, and possibly going Lesbian at the Dinah Vegas.

Teriyaki Temple: You’ve been everywhere girl! Saw you at the Grammys, kicking it at the Playboy Mansion, launching a new clothing line at LA Fashion Week earlier this month. And you’re all over the Internet! So with such a busy schedule, how do you always look so hot? If I were you, I’d look totally hags! What’s your secret to staying so fabulous? Kaya Jones: Everything in moderation. Eat healthy and workout and sleep! Water is so important. Lots of H2O! TT: Most recently we saw you on the Grammys red carpet. You were rocking gorgeous in that Alexis Monsanto Atelier gown. You caused quite the buzz! It’s obvious you really love fashion and you aren’t afraid to push the envelope. KJ: I’m obsessed with fashion!!! It’s so important to me. As a designer I need to be aware of the “what’s next factor.” TT: When you’re picking out an outfit for a red carpet event what are some of the things you look for? KJ: I look for how it fits. Does it hang or see KAYA JONES page 3

RuPaul at the 2012 Critics’ Choice TV Awards – Brian To / WENN

by Shaun Knittel SGN Associate Editor RuPaul, 55, is perhaps best known for the 1992 international hit, “Supermodel (You Better Work),” and the drag queen reality TV show on the Logo Network, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” – now in its 8th season. RuPaul is also an author, having published two books: Lettin’ It All Hang Out: An Autobiography (1995) and Workin’ It!: Ru Paul’s Guide to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Style (2010).

These days, RuPaul, like most drag entertainers that have performed in front of audiences for more than two or three decades, has developed a reputation for being a source of sage advice. Ru says things that just make sense. Call it real talk, wisdom, or the truth – it doesn’t matter the description – what matters is that when RuPaul speaks people (Gay or straight) listen. Obviously, this kind of access to your advice by the public comes with a great deal of responsibility. If Ru were to say see RUPAUL page 5
