On April 10, Tacoma Art Museum returns Ma Chihuly’s Floats to the museum’s central courtyard. The floats are installed each spring and are on view through the summer. Chihuly began the Niijima Floats series in 1991, inspired by a visit to Niijima, Japan, along with his

continued from cover SMC put on a well-staged, terrificallysung performance last weekend focused on Cher songs and with the premiere CherImpersonator and very first All-Star from “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Chad Michaels.

Michaels contributed a lot of flavor by lipsyncing to some of Cher’s biggest hits, like “Woman’s World” and “SOS”. He wore iconic costuming and wigs that instantly created the Cher persona without needing to say a word.

But that is not the only aspect that shows why he is a clear winner in the impersonation game. He has meticulously studied Cher’s moves and expressions and it’s easy to imagine that Cher is on our stage!

by Richard Rhodes.

Richard Rhodes’ Untitled “stone wave” sculpture sits at the heart of the museum and is made of 650 stones in a 1,650-square-foot enclosure. Rhodes designed the elegant form in collaboration with architect Antoine Predock with the vision of having other artworks installed in the courtyard.

The primary stones are 24 inches square and weigh about 250 pounds. The stones are 500-year-old pavers that come from a village slated to be engulfed by the Three Gorges Dam reservoir in China. The sculpture was originally assembled in China and each stone was marked for reassembly in Tacoma. The team of installers had to fit

Smooth-voiced soloists including Carter James Kight, Roman Wadsworth-Stansbury, and Joel-Kimmel-Staebler were top-notch.

Comic reliefers Coulson Bingham and Charles Simmons came on to say they were super-Cher-fans and that they’d heard she was in the building and then ran around frantically to see if they could find her.

They mirrored each other’s energy well and purported to be an adorable couple-in-love.

On Sunday there was a special moment at the start of Act 2 which started out with the inclusion of a large battalion of Washington Middle School choristers, led by Blake Saunders. SMC and SWC (Seattle Women’s Chorus) have a program where they work

with the students each year in a six-week residency to support their choral program.

For this performance, the students, the SMC/SWC mentors and the rest of the SMC performers sang a specially composed song that will be published next year and available to all other choirs to perform.

Composer Jim Papoulis came to Washington Middle School to do a songwriting workshop with the students. Jim is a prolific composer of choral music for young voices.

In a workshop, Jim elicited thoughts from the young people about things that matter to them. In a safe forum, free of judgment, he asked probing questions about their thoughts and fears and hopes.

He then created a song about “being seen and heard” and the middle schoolers and mentors sang it together. It was moving and professional. Great job, folks!

The next couple of concerts coming up: SWC’s “Legends of Rock,” April 28th at Benaroya Hall at 4pm (only!), with guest star local singer-actor Sarah Rudinoff. The focus will be on big-name rockers like Janis Joplin, Carly Simon, Patti Smith, Joan Jett, Alanis Morissette, Florence Welch, Tina Turner, Debbie Harry, and more groundbreaking women artists.

SMC’s “Summer of ’69,” June 21st at 8pm and June 22nd at 2pm at Benaroya Hall. Think Woodstock, the moon landing, Vietnam, Stonewall. SMC will transport us back to this vibrant year through the charttopping, culture-defining music that blared through turntables and transistor radios.

Also they will present a thrilling new musical theater work that tells the stories of the Stonewall riots and the birth of the struggle to live life out loud!

all material and supplies into the central courtyard space through a small door in the glass walls. Workers squeezed between the windows and the waves to fit the stones in place. Each stone had to be placed within 1/8 inch of its calculated position in order for the whole pattern to work.

Rhodes calls the shape a hyperbolic paraboloid, with only one of the four corners at a right angle. It was designed to look like water in a fishbowl that had been jostled and frozen forever in mid-slosh. The stones rest on foam pedestals attached to foam risers that are higher at the corners. The design of the supporting structure creates a void between the stones and gives the illusion that they are floating. The foundation is a plain concrete floor above the museum’s parking lot. The base is covered in a waterproofing membrane and the honeycomb of support beneath the stones facilitates drainage.

The space has a certain serenity as the wave seems to go on for eternity, reflected in the mirrored walls. The sculpture brings a strong water motif into the heart of the building, much like Puget Sound and the region’s rainy season is at Tacoma’s heart.

The collection includes the largest retrospective museum collection of glass art by Tacoma native Dale Chihuly on permanent view; the most significant collection of studio art jewelry by Northwest artists; key holdings in 19th century European and 20th-century American art; and one of the finest collections of Japanese woodblock prints on the West Coast. By the end, I wanted to jump up on stage and hug her, for having gone through so much to just “come out,” but the standing ovation lasted too long.

Giddily amusing Shazam! examines the hero within

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer SHAZAM! Now playing Shazam! is a difficult movie to dislike. It is the most consistently entertaining entry in Warner Bros and DC Comics superhero universe to date even if it’s nowhere nearly as inventively insane as James Wan’s Aquaman turned out to be or if it doesn’t feature as many emotionally euphoric highs and intense sequences of action heroics as Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman offered up. Director David F. Sandberg’s (Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation) bubbly effervescent blend of kidfriendly comical antics and adult-centered moralistic conundrums is a solidly ebullient rollercoaster ride of comic book pyrotechnics that’s a heck of a lot of fun. I had a grand time watching it. Something tells me the majority of general audience members are going to end up feeling the same.

Philadelphia orphan Billy Batson (Asher Angel) has been searching for his missing mother for the better part of the last couple of years, running away from a variety of foster parents in his quest to learn what has happened to her. After his last escapade the 14-year-old has been dropped into a group home run by Rosa (Marta Milans) and Victor Vasquez (Cooper Andrews), quickly making the acquaintance of his five fellow bunkmates Freddie (Jack Dylan Grazer), Mary (Grace Fulton), Darla (Faithe Herman), Eugene (Ian Chen) and Pedro (Jovan Armand). While everyone seems nice and the atmosphere is positive, Billy is still making plans to run away, only going through the motions of trying to fit in with the rest of this seemingly happy group until the right moment to bolt arises.

But things quickly change. After stopping a pair of bullies from beating up Freddie, Billy is magically transported to a surreal castle where he meets a grey-bearded

old man with a giant staff proclaiming to be a wizard (Djimon Hounsou). He has been searching for a champion, someone pure of heart and spirit he can pass off his power to, and he’s chosen this young teenage boy to be that person. All Billy has to do is say the man’s name and he’s instantly transformed into the dynamic Shazam (Zachary Levi), and once back in Philadelphia he’ll have to decide whether or not he’s the type of superhero others will want to emulate and look up to, or if instead he’s nothing more than a vapid needy charlatan undeserving of the gifts that have been so mysteriously bestowed upon him.

Shazam! is sort of like some strange, beguilingly euphoric amalgam of Big, Superman, Adventures in Babysitting and Freaky Friday. It is a movie built around the growing friendship that blossoms between Billy and Freddie, the two forming a strong brotherly bond as they try to figure out what Shazam’s powers are as well as what the best way for him to utilize them might turn out to be. It is a

star-making showcase for young Grazer (last seen stealing scenes as the fast-talking Eddie in 2017’s It) as well as a terrific vehicle for “Chuck” star Levi, the two sporting a rollicking give-and-take chemistry that’s something special. Screenwriter Henry Gayden (Earth to Echo) does a grand job of making this connection between the two feel authentically three-dimensional, Sandberg allowing both actors the freedom to craft these characters even when the inherent necessities of a superhero origin story threaten to derail the film’s momentum and place things on an all-toofamiliar track I’ve ridden upon any number of times before.

Thankfully this doesn’t happen. As unfamiliar as I am with any of the previous incarnations of the titular character or the comic books first created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck I don’t know how much Gayden’s script or the original story he concocted with fellow writer Darren Lemke (Goosebumps) differs from the source material. What I do know is that by placing

this emphasis on the characters the filmmakers make even the more familiar and cliché aspects of this story more inventive and original than they honestly have any right to be. This is a story of orphan kids making a family of their own design, one they decide on their own how to construct, one that was not forced upon them by DNA, this element giving the picture a hopeful, open-hearted center that’s divine.

It should still be noted this isn’t all rainbows and sunshine. Sandberg’s horror background is unnervingly put to good use, and the film’s PG-13 rating should not be dismissed. The main villain looking to take Billy/Shazam’s powers for himself, the nefarious Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong), has nothing less than the Seven Deadly Sins aiding him in his quest. These biblically demonic evils are envisioned as gigantic, grotesque monsters straight out of H.P. Lovecraft, all slimy drooling teeth and slithering tentacles meant to leave their intended victim cowering in fear before they are devoured completely. There is one sequence in particular inside a corporate boardroom that is particularly gruesome, and while I found the scene suitably chilling I can just as clearly imagine younger children wanting to get up and leave the theatre right then and there no matter how silly and agreeably innocent the remainder of the motion picture might prove to be.

For my part I didn’t mind any of that.

While a little leisurely paced, I still can’t say there was any time watching Shazam! where I felt DC’s latest superhero was failing to deliver the goods. The whole movie builds to a pleasing climax where a hero finds his true calling and a family makes the decision to stand together as one against all the ills of the world no matter what the cost might be. This is a story where the children literally lead the way, teaching all of us to look inside our hearts for the potential hero within whether we think they reside there or not.

Latest Pet Sematary adaptation revels in pointless cruelty

Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) and his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz) have retreated from the hustle and bustle of life in Boston for a seemingly idyllic one in a small college town in upstate Maine. They have moved into a spacious house nestled into a corner of a dense forest along with their children, 8-year-old daughter Ellie (Jeté Laurence) and toddler son Gage (Hugo Lavoie, Lucas Lavoie). Their new nextdoor neighbor Jud (John Lithgow) is a kindly soul filled with stories about the local traditions and folklore who instantly makes friends with the family’s sociable cat Church during dinner.

When purchasing the property it appears Louis never noticed that a series of speeding tanker trucks regularly ran up and down the roadway in front of his new house. One evening before heading to a Halloween party Jud finds Church dead on the side of the road, and knowing how much the animal means to Ellie he volunteers to

keep the death secret until the Creeds figure out how they want to broach the subject with their daughter. Later that evening, the old man helps Louis bury the cat, but not in the local pet cemetery at the edge of the doctor’s property. Instead, Jud takes him deep into the woods, past a massive barricade, forcing him to plant the dead creature under a desolate piece of ground shrouded in fog and devoid of vegetation. The next morning Church returns as if by magic, and while Ellie is initially elated to see her pet home that happiness quickly turns to fear when she begins to suspect something bordering on evil might be wrong with her pet.

As the famous line from author Stephen King’s best-selling 1983 novel Pet Sematary goes, sometimes dead is better, and that’s exactly what all of the Creeds are going to find out thanks to Louis and Jud’s foolishness. As fans of both the novel as well as director Mary Lambert’s fondly remembered 1989 adaptation already know, Church’s resurrection is just the tip of the iceberg for this close-knit family. Tragedy will strike and even worse decisions on the parts of those who should know better will be made, all of which will lead to an avalanche of bloodshed and carnage that if discovered would rock this tiny Maine community right down to its core.

Thankfully, as familiar as the nuts and bolts of King’s story might be, screenwriter Jeff Buhler (The Prodigy) and directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, the duo behind 2014’s magnificent Starry Eyes, shake things up just enough it’s likely audiences are going to be kept on their collective toes as far as this latest adaptation is concerned. They’ve all shaken things up just enough to keep things interesting, and while their changes are

hardly massive (and while they just as clearly have been slightly diminished by the film’s trailers), they do give things a moderately intriguing fresh coat of genre paint that’s at least somewhat refreshing.

Not that this was enough as far as I was concerned. I’ve read King’s book twice. I’ve seen Lambert’s version three times. I adore Starry Eyes and was genuinely excited to see what filmmakers as creatively inspired as Kölsch and Widmyer were going to be able to do with the material. But there’s just something about this story that keeps me from being able to embrace it with anything approaching genuine enthusiasm. While King has never been the kindest of storytellers, I rarely think any of his books are pointlessly cruel. Yet that’s how I feel about this one. I find it to be cruel for the sake of being cruel, unrelentingly bleak just for the sake of being bleak. The core narrative upsets me because I find it to be pointless in its depressive reveling in all of the worst aspects of the human condition, this tragic tale not so much horrifying as it is upsetting, and as such it doesn’t do a darn thing for me.

Granted, this is still as handsomely mounted a production as any King adaptation I’ve honestly ever seen. Kölsch and Widmyer appear to have genuine affinity for the material and it’s clear they are determined to pull out all the stops as far as the Creeds and their familial trauma are concerned.

They’ve enlisted a trio of strong actors in Clarke, Seimetz and Lithgow to help them do it while also boosting the role of Ellie in a variety of fascinating ways, eliciting a superlative performance out of youngster Laurence in the process. They’ve also hired an incredible technical team which includes composer Christopher Young (Hellraiser),

cinematographer Laurie Rose (Kill List), production designer Todd Cherniawsky (Ginger Snaps) and editor Sarah Broshar (The Post), and in large part thanks to their collective talents the film looks and sounds terrific first scene to last.

But as far as I’m concerned this is still all for naught. The underlying scenario just doesn’t work, and I just do not feel any of the various pieces fit together in a satisfying way. It makes no sense to me that someone as supposedly intelligent as Louis would move into a home with two young children nestled against such a dangerous piece of highway. I’ve never understood why there is a ghost haunting him, giving the doctor a series of nonsensical warnings that right from the jump he never even considers taking a moment or two to ponder let alone heed. Jud’s reasoning for disclosing what the “sour ground” can do, while explained a bit better here than I recall it being in either King’s book or Lambert’s previous film, is still a gigantic piece of hogwash.

The funny thing is, I could likely forgive just about all of that in the context of a gruesome piece of horror lunacy had I not felt so bludgeoned by the more important central components at the heart of the story.

There’s nothing profound about any of this, nothing that to me hints of greater social or political subtext that might make the merciless gloominess and repulsive malice of the story have more emotional heft or meaning. I find that I feel Pet Sematary holds its audience in something perilously close to contempt, and because of that, as handsomely mounted a production Kölsch and Widmyer’s film might prove to be, I could frankly care less if I ever have to suffer through a second of it ever again.
