Celebrating 45 Years!

National Endowment for the Arts announces grant to Seattle’s Music of Remembrance National Endowment for the Arts Acting Chairman Mary Anne Carter has approved more than $27 million in grants as part of the Arts Endowmentʼs first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2019. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $25,000 to Music of Remembrance for the commission of The Parting, a new opera by Tom Cipullo.

Art Works is the Arts Endowmentʼs principal grantmaking program. The agency received 1,605 Art Works applications for this round of grantmaking and will award 972 grants in this category.

“The arts enhance our communities and our lives, and we look forward to seeing these projects take place throughout the country, giving Americans opportunities to learn, to create, to heal, and to celebrate,” said Mary Anne Carter, acting chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts.

The NEA grant will support the commission, production, premiere and additional performances of The Parting, a chamber opera by Guggenheim Awardwinning composer Tom Cipullo and librettist David Mason. The opera is an intimate exploration of the life and work of Miklós Radnóti, widely considered one of the most important poetic witnesses to the Holocaust. Radnóti was a distinctive figure in Budapestʼs literary and intellectual circles

SMT’s Aida was great, but it’s over

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer AIDA SEATTLE MUSICAL THEATRE Through February 24 I regret to inform you that Seattle Musical Theatre (SMT) presented a terrific production of Elton John’s musical, Aida, but you can’t see it because it’s closed. It was only three weekends long in February and one of those weekends was the Snow Event of the Century.

A lot of the praise for this production lies with Troy Wageman as director/choreographer. Troy has been a musical theater performer for years and done some terrific work on stage. But it’s his development into a musical theater director to be reckoned with that may be his best contribution to the art, because he truly has an eye for how to take a little and make it look like a helluva lot.

SMT doesn’t have a lot of money for sets or costumes or lights or sound. Sound in that Magnuson Park skinny rectangular theater, especially as managed by the patched together sound board, can be extremely hit or miss. But Troy knows how to manage that and knows who can manage it for him, and apparently Martin Sisk is a genius with that sound board. Why? Because the lead singers in this production sounded effing amazing. Loud and clear!

Secondarily, Troy knows who is around in the performing community and can choose, cajole, beg or otherwise recruit folks who maybe wouldn’t step into the SMT confines unless Troy is there – this is my opinion, not a known fact. The cast for this production included folks with experience at Village Theatre and the 5th Avenue Theatre, which raised the bar on experience for the entire rest of the group.

Troy partnered with the creative Brandon Peck as music director who also knows where to find musicians who are willing to work with him to pull out a score that in lesser hands would sound muddy and underwhelming. Especially, in that odd space. So, musically, the production also pulled off the complex score, which is almost all sung, operetta-like.

The cast was headed by Matthew Lang as Radames, the young soldier, whose father is aiming him toward the Egyptian crown. Lang showed his growth as a performer in this show with a lot of emoting and power.

He was matched by Tanesha Ross as Aida, the Nubian Princess captive, and while the script does an extremely poor job of showing why a Nubian princess would ever overcome her circumstances to care for her captor, Ross and Lang managed a credible amount of chemistry. Also, Ross is a terrific singer and I was happy to see her perform again after some time off.

Other notable performances were a very funny Amneris, Alyssa Maas, the Egyptian princess who is engaged to Radames, and Timothy Glynn as Radames’ father, Zoser.

The rest of the enthusiastic cast made good contributions. It was a bit of an odd directing choice to have cast members sort of wander around on the sidelines of the stage, but it was not that distracting.

The costumes of Sadiqua Crutcher were sumptuous and looked extremely expensive! It wasn’t possible that they really were expensive, so that was also a great achievement. All in all, I wish I could have encouraged you to go.

tacular, the performances are uniformly perfect – John Moore in the long, intense role of Steve Jobs brought a powerful baritone to the role and an uncanny sense of the man – and Bates’ music is a multi-textured wonder. The opera is performed by a gigantic orchestra with an electronic core and the largest collection of percussion instruments in SO history. Not only that, Parisian conductor Nicole Paiement is that rarest of birds – a woman on the podium – and an expert in the development and performance of contemporary opera. The [R]evolution of Steve Jobs is a co-commission by Seattle Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Indiana University, and San Francisco Opera, where Maestro Paiement nurtures new works through Opera Parallèle. It was a thrill to see this internationally famous woman at the Seattle Opera podium. You could actually see her conduct because the podium was so high – her arms were like an air dance to the wildly dramatic music.

Librettist Mark Campbell co-wrote (with Kimberly Reed) SO’s 2017 community opera As One – the extremely moving chamber opera about a trans person finding their true identity. Similar to that project, Campbell used small sharply focused scenes to negotiate the complex story of Steve Jobs’ public and private lives, bringing a chamber-type intimacy to what is a very big, loud, dramatic main-stage production. Beginning with the child Steve (a silent role played with admirable intensity

by Thomas Gomes) and his father Paul Jobs (the kindly Morgan Smith) we see the start of an interest in “taking things apart and putting them together again” when young Steve is given a work bench and tool kit for his birthday. In the eighteen scenes that follow, we see Steve build a digital empire, love and leave one family, create another, interact with his guru Kōbun Chino Otogawa (Adam Lau, in excellent voice), who Steve finally joins on the other side of death, returning to the mystery of creation as a boy in his father’s garage.

If this sounds like myth-making, it is – especially in Bates’ marvelously percussive, multi-textured orchestral and electronic hybrid composition. He managed to bring the very new together with age-old orchestral power to convey the wonderment of the digital age. Yet in opera the composer generally needs an excellent narrative libretto before composition in order to do the best

work, and I can only wonder what this opera would have been if Campbell’s libretto had been more ambitious and less conventional.

Music expresses the emotional content of a text – but the story is in the hands of the librettist. Instead of going after the big story, Campbell stuck to the predictable tale of an obnoxious man being made better by a faithful woman (after he dumped another faithful woman). For those of us who are old enough to have lived through the high drama of the early computer age – the simple machines that seemed like miracles, the battle between the Microsoft PC and the Apple Mac, the firing of Jobs and near-collapse of Apple, the rise of Pixar, the return of Jobs to Apple, the subsequent world-shattering iPhone, and the weirdly improbable death of Jobs before his time – the storyline of the opera seems at once too brief, too cryptic, and too small.

My opera buddy, who is a generation younger than I am, agreed that you had to know the story of the transition from the literate to the digital age to understand the opera story. An early scene, in which the adult Jobs holds up the iPhone and sings about digital convergence onto “one device,” is a bit ho-hum in the sense that we all have that one device in our pockets, so what’s the big deal? The opera does noth-

ing to convey what the world was like in the olden days, when there was no internet, when you had to spend hours in the library to find things out, and when all the metaphors of the digital age – files, pages, headers, footers, cutting, pasting – were real-world phenomena. My students were always fascinated to hear me describe my own college years, when writing a research paper involved literal cutting and pasting of revisions into long, scroll-like pages for re-typing on an actual typewriter. These are the kids who look at the dial of an oldfashioned telephone and wonder where the buttons are. To have a single scene in which Jobs holds up an ordinary iPhone misses the big story of what Wozniak and Jobs actually set in motion at Steve’s workbench in his dad’s garage.

Without that sense of wizardry, we don’t really know why Steve Jobs deserves an opera anymore than Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak, or Tim Berners-Lee – or Alan Turing for that matter, or any of the brilliant women of the Blenchley Circle whose collective genius is coming to light only now.

Because – take it from me, you younger folk – it was magical, the steady evolution of machines that became more and more powerful, useful, and quasi-human.

It was also a time of steady mourning over the things that went away – the hands-on connection with your own work, the card catalogue with its genealogies of handwriting on every card, the active searching for knowledge – not in you boring old office or living rooms but in reading rooms that were like palaces of learning. I wish Campbell had brought a larger, more complex vision to this assignment – a story as ambitious as the complexity and drama of Bates’ composition and Tzykun’s intriguing sets.

Nevertheless, Seattle Opera has brought something really new and exciting to the stage. Though we’re living in a very fertile time for contemporary opera, only a small percentage of new works enter the repertoire. I think this one will find wide success. But see it now, while you have a chance to enjoy the original production and Paiement’s wonderful conducting. We Seattleites, of all people, will bring our own experience to this opera – our special understanding of the impact that Steve Jobs brought to our own professional and personal lives. bed of dance creativity, we would have fewer claims to an educated, engaged audience without this ongoing program that seeks out and presents the best that the entire world has to offer in modern and contemporary dance. One reason to support this marvelous series is that MMDG returns to Meany Hall on a regular basis.

As ever, Morris and his troupe of 19 dancers and live music ensemble covered a tremendous range of movement and feeling.

In three dances the audience progressed through the delightful to the meditative to the sublime, through music ranging from the popular – this time from the 1920s – to the great classical repertoire that Morris explores so well. And, in the opinion of this admirer, Morris returned to the highest levels of his greatness with a new dance to Schubert’s “Trout Quintet.”

I say “returned” because during his last visit to Seattle in 2018 with “Pepperland” (2017) I was beginning to worry that he might be losing his touch – not his ingenious choreographic touch, or his love and brilliant use of music – but of his ambition or ability to probe that side of his genius that leads to the sublime. “Pepperland” was charming, funny, colorful and joyful, but it missed the underlying dangers of its age that made the humor and wistfulness in the Beatles’ music more poignant. This quality of the sublime – the mysterious as opposed to the literal – is present in Morris’ greater works such as “V” (2001), “King Arthur,”

(2006) “Mozart Dances” (2006), “Dido and Aeneas” (1989) and the immortal “L-Allegro, Il Penseroso, ed Il Moderato” (1988).

The list of transcendent works is much longer, of course, given Morris’ huge body of work, but MMDG is unusually consistent in reaching the depths and heights of the enigmatic. I am happy to report that he gave us that experience again in “Trout,” cleverly introduced by “Dancing Honeymoon” (1998) and “Numerator” (2017).

“Dancing Honeymoon” (1998) Music: Fifteen popular songs from the 1920s Vocals: Mark Morris with MMDG Music Ensemble This delightful work premiered on the stage at Meany Hall 21 years ago, and has clearly not lost any of its charm. Seven dancers (including Seattle’s own Aaron Loux and the great Lauren Grant) dressed in bright summer-vacation costumes enter a sunny stage to enact the jolly, yet slightly odd sentiments of an earlier time. The repertoire, sung in a strong baritone by MM himself (who knew? In another life he could have been a triple threat on Broadway) included old favorites like “You Were Meant For Me” and “Limehouse Blues” as well as novelty songs such as “And Her Mother Came Too” and “A Cup of Coffee, A Sandwich, and You.” What lifts this work beyond its charm is the precision of the choreography, as though a bunch of Bertie Wooster’s friends traded in the Charleston for precise, complex movement.

chairs (which are also thrown around in patterns) – all while maintaining goofy Bertie Wooster smiles. There is a deception here – a lot more going on than the surface would imply. Though the pre-performance speaker, MMDG dance veteran Brian Lawson, emphasized that the dances have no programmatic meaning – that there are no codes of meaning in modern dance – Morris is a master of meaning, probably because he doesn’t insist on his own program but constructs frameworks that allow the viewer to see into their own codes.

While “Dancing Honeymoon” seems like simple entertainment, it rubs its happy music against a sophisticated, intentional scheme of movement that suggests that even the Bertie Woosters of the world have inner lives.

“Numerator” (2017) Music: Lou Harrison – “Varied Trio for violin, piano, and percussion” Morris loves the work of composer Lou Harrison and has devised many dances to his compositions. “Numerator,” celebrating Harrison’s centenary year, is a dance for six men using instrumentation that creates the effect of an Indonesian gamelan – an assembly of percussion instruments that create sounds and rhythms quite different from western music. To my ears it sounds ethereal, exciting, mysterious, like the dance Morris made to this work. Six men enter the stage upper right, one-by-one, on their stomachs, slowly crawling on the diagonal to lower left, rising to elbows, knees, crawling, then gradually standing, raising

arms to heaven before leaving the stage.

To me it looked like a moving “Ascent of Man,” establishing a theme of growth and development. The word “numerator” is at once the mathematical term of quantity in a fraction and a person who enumerates or counts things. It’s a cool word – but I’m with Brian Lawson on this one – I don’t know what it means and I’m not going to impose a meaning onto it.

The dance itself was wonderfully intriguing, especially seeing a group of men execute complex movements together, that allow relationships to evolve without the clichés that bubble up when watching mixed couples dance. Lawson, who was an understudy when Morris created this dance, said that the dancers are encouraged to improvise by executing the prescribed gestures in whatever space on the stage they choose and in whatever direction they want to face, which makes the dance somewhat different every time it’s performed. I saw it twice and looked for differences – I could see the dancers negotiating space much as you would when walking on a busy sidewalk. As the relationships evolved and melted away during the dance I found any inclination to conventional assumptions about human relations melt away as well – which was the magical element of this dance for me.

by dance into something heart-lifting. This very familiar quintet (you would know it the minute you heard it) is replete with moments of drama, lyricism, and repetition – the kind of repeating that gets fancier every time. The costumes, by MMDG dancer Maile Okamura, are very beautiful – softly colored, semi-transparent dresses for the women, neutral pants and flowing blue blouses for the men – that ripple as the dance proceeds. As I left the auditorium on the first night I listened to people talking about how much the blue lighting and the costumes made them think of trout. I didn’t think of schools of fish, to be honest, nor do I think that was the general aim, but there was a unity and joyfulness in this dance that reminded me of the final passage of “L’Allegro, Il Penseroso ed Il Moderato” in which dancers in gorgeous colors race across the stage, arms extended, expressing the sheer joy of being alive.

While this dance was as highly structured as the music, with beautifully repeated gestures – a forward bending leap into the wings occurring simultaneously as dancers leave downstage right and upstage left, trios of dancers in which the middle person twirls away leaving a duet to complete the figure, dancers leaping into a partner’s arms to be swung low to the ground, an outstretched leg describing a compass arc – the dance itself did not seem burdened by 19th century ideas. Morris has found a way into the music that is uniquely his own, and that shows us things we never thought of before about something that, to many of us, is very familiar. One trope that I especially love, that Morris has used before, never fails to intrigue: the use of the sides of the stage to have dancers enter and exit as though two villages next door to each other share a common central ground. When you see repeated entries and exits confined to one or the other side of the stage, you suddenly realize that the stage is a patch of ground in a much larger setting, and that the dancers are finding their way to this center space just as you are.

My dance buddy for the evening was very frustrated by this phenomenon. The entire first movement is given over to dancers walking onto and leaving the stage as if exploring it for the first time. She had no patience for this, and it put her in a bad mood for the rest of the dance. “But didn’t

seen many MMDG dances together, and I know her expectations are high, but no higher than mine. As I ponder the disparity in our reactions I think there may be as much commitment in a protest as in a celebration. I loved it, folks – I felt like Mark Morris was at his best again. I wasn’t weeping at the end, the way I did at “L’Allegro” or “V” or “Mozart Dances” – it was more

like being with a cherished friend from whom you always learn something new, and recognize something eternal. I feel the way people must have felt during Mozart’s lifetime, or Handel’s, if they were alert; the way we all felt who were in New York during Balanchine’s lifetime: How lucky I am to be alive at the same time as a great artist – and to realize that it’s happening.

Celebrating 45 Years!

“BC Illuminates Festival” – “Change for Good” March 8-9 at the Bellevue College Library Media Center Bellevue College (3000 Landerholm Cir SE, Bellevue, WA) is bringing together authors, storytellers, writers, photographers, musicians, digital world builders, activists, and developers to present at “BC Illuminates”, a festival of literature, creativity, technology and social change. Taking place over two days, the festival is geared to connect the King County community with inspiring storytellers and creators ranging from traditional novelists to those working in the cutting edge medium of virtual reality.

Topics at the festival range from sustainability to civil rights, delivered by diverse voices to help broaden understanding of the culture and peoples who shape the rich tapestry of the Pacific Northwest. In addition to traditional one-hour presentations, the festival includes panel discussions, readings, exhibits and hands-on activities.

The event’s keynote speaker is University of Washington professor Quintard Taylor, a historian and author whose focus is on African-American history in the American West. He will present on his work with BlackPast, a 6,000 page reference center dedicated to providing information to the

general public on African American history and the history of more than one bil-

lion people of African ancestry around the world. Floating Bridge Press is slated to host a panel with authors Rena Priest and Natasha Moni, whose work engages individuals, enriches communities and enlivens the arts.

There will be a screening of the queer punk coming-of-age stop motion animation film Torrey Pines, followed by a discussion with director Clyde Peterson. Prominent Pacific Northwest musician Kimya Dawson will also perform at the festival. A full schedule of the event will be available soon.

The festival will also include a virtual reality (VR) space, hosted by Bellevue College’s new XR Lab. In this area, festival attendees will be able to experience a range of technology-mediated experiences that have been designed to achieve social good outcomes as well as meet a range of technologists and creators from the Pacific Northwest. VR exhibits will include 360° video documentaries, interactive climate change visualizations, immersive interpretations of short stories, interactive artworks and a range of other exciting experiences to try.

“It might seem a little unusual to launch a literary festival with a technology focus, but

we felt that we needed to embrace the new ways in which technology is, and will, play a role in how people engage with stories,” said Vivienne McClendon, dean of the Bellevue College Library & eLearning Division. “At the same time we recognized that not all voices get the same opportunity to tell their stories, so we wanted to create space for diverse perspectives.

Jordan’s playfully perverse Greta an irreverently amoral thriller

Greta Hideg will be remembered in the same breath as the character she portrayed in Paul Verhoeven’s drama or in exceptional motion pictures like The Piano Teacher, Things to Come, La Cérémonie, La Séparation, Madame Bovary, Coup de Torchon and so many additional titles impossible to name here, that does not mean she isn’t any less magnificent. This vicious little performance is the raison d’être to give this feature a look, Huppert dominating to such a staggering degree it’s doubtful the thriller would have been even passingly worthwhile had she declined to be a part of the production. She’s perfect, one little moment where she bemusedly ballet dances across a hardwood living room floor after doing something horrendous having me clutching my throat in terrifying chills while giggling madly at the sheer lunacy of her antics all at the exact same time.

In a very different sort of role Moretz is also very good here, especially during the film’s first half. Frances’ lingering pain over the death of her mother intimately mingles with her growing attachment to Greta. But what’s happening between the two of them is nothing but an illusion, and when the artifice of it all becomes apparent the hurt and the disgust she showcases is poignantly palpable. While not nearly as stunning as her tour de force turn in last year’s masterful The Miseducation of Cameron Post this is still a strong performance from the actress,

Moretz once again showing she’s one of the more agreeably adventurous young talents of her generation.

The movie does sort of forget what to do with Moretz during its latter stages, Frances becoming more of a terrified observer to what is transpiring than she is an active participant.

Yet Jordan still manages to keep things interesting, the constantly shifting points-of-view keeping me on my toes in ways I personally found exhilarating. The director also gets a fine, subtly multifaceted performance out of It Follows star Monroe that’s far more intricate than I initially gave it credit for being, the actress catching me by surprise with how she allowed the superficial and haughty Erica to become a strong-willed, selfless dynamo with more intelligence and wherewithal than she typically allows anyone other than her closest friends to notice.

As far as the aforementioned plot holes go there’s an egregiously major one involving the use of law enforcement (or lack thereof) when the central mystery involving Greta and Francis’ relationship kicks into high gear, but I can’t really get into it because doing so would spoil a major twist something fierce.

Veteran character actors Colm Feore and Stephen Rea are also all but wasted in a pair of roles that frustratingly don’t add up to anything substantive, which is honestly peculiar considering just how big a part they each play in what eventually ends up happening to both women by the end of the film. I could also say there was something off with the whimsically cryptic oddness of Greta’s overall plan if I wanted to but thankfully Jordan handles this aspect of the story with such assertive venality I’m willing to forgive any missteps there as far as that’s concerned, the delightfully fragile vulgarity of it all just too ingeniously pleasurable for me to resist.

All of which means Greta won’t be for everyone. Its horrifying atmosphere grows increasingly potent as events progress, and Huppert’s playfully perverse performance is strangely intoxicating in a way that almost makes the titular character worth rooting for. But all of that is arguably why I enjoyed Jordan’s latest pulpy psychological terror as much as I did, and viewers open to pleasures as wicked and as abhorrent as the ones mentioned in this review owe it to themselves to give this irreverent thriller a look.

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer GRETA Now playing Frances McCullen (Chloë Grace Moretz) thinks she is doing a good deed. After finding a designer purse on the subway, the Boston native currently living in New York City with her college best friend Erica Penn (Maika Monroe) decides to return it to the owner herself. That person turns out to be the eccentrically friendly Greta Hideg (Isabelle Huppert), a French piano teacher currently living alone what with her daughter studying ballet in Paris and her beloved husband dead from illness for quite some time now. The pair strike up an instant friendship, the older woman seeing in Frances the daughter who has left for bigger and brighter things while the young woman notices in the kindly Greta fragments of the mother she herself lost to cancer just one year prior.

All seems wonderful. The pair become inseparable, Frances even convincing Greta to adopt a dog from the local shelter. But things get increasingly strange. Erica is the first one to notice it, imploring Frances to be careful and not let the older woman get too close too fast. Greta doesn’t like it when her young new friend starts trying to put a little distance between the two of them. She shows up at Frances’ work and makes a scene that compels the police to be notified. She calls her at all hours leaving a variety of alarming messages. Greta even starts stalking Erica, sending pictures of the blonde flibbertigibbet to Frances that make it look like she is about to do something despicable to her.

There’s a lot to say about director Neil Jordan’s Greta, much of which one doesn’t want to dig too deeply into as doing so might inadvertently reveal a few of the more playfully malevolent surprises hidden within his and Ray Wright’s (The Crazies) creatively disturbing screenplay. What can be said is that the movie is indeed a thriller, and Greta Hideg isn’t a woman to be trifled with. Not only does she demand respect, but she’ll also do whatever she wants to in order to ensure she gets it, her murderously quirky charm concealing an explosively acidic temper that once unleashed cannot be easily contained.

Greta knows what she wants, friendship and companionship, Frances only the most recent innocent young woman to discover this, much to her own personal peril.

For Jordan, this movie is a long way from the Oscar-winning heights of The Crying Game or of the mesmerizing strength of titles as richly diverse as Mona Lisa, Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, The End of the Affair, The Good Thief or Byzantium. But he’s just too great a filmmaker for this fancifully devilish thriller not to resonate, and much like his 1999 unhinged psychedelic psychological freak-out In Dreams or his whacky, colorfully volatile 1984 take on the “Red Riding Hood” fairy tale The Company of Wolves there’s just too much idiosyncratic awesomeness for this effort to be construed as anything even remotely akin to a failure. The film’s unconventional weirdness allows it to resonate on an oddly intimate level that’s extraordinary, and while plot holes abound inside Jordan and Wright’s script most of them are so minor pointing them out feels like a waste of time.

Then there is the luminous Huppert.

The daring, forcefully dynamic actress has played a myriad of incredible characters in her four-plus decade career, and as her recent Academy Award-nominated performance in 2016’s Elle showed she has no intent on slowing down or playing things safe anytime soon. While it’s unlikely
