Celebrating 46 Years!

Music of Remembrance to receive $20,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts Music of Remembrance has been approved for a $20,0000 Art Works grant to support “Art From Ashes.” This year-long project will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, including a residency with the Violins of Hope project. Overall, the National Endowment for the Arts has approved 1,187 grants totaling $27.3 million in the first round of fiscal year 2020 funding to support arts projects in every state in the nation, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

The Art Works funding category supports projects that focus on public engagement with, and access to, various forms of excellent art across the nation; the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence; learning in the arts at all stages of life; and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life.

“The arts are at the heart of our communities, connecting people through shared

experiences and artistic expression,” said Arts Endowment chairman Mary Anne Carter. “The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support projects like ‘Art From Ashes.’”

The NEA grant will support “Art From Ashes,” a series of concert performances in 2020 by Music of Remembrance. Concert programming will include works banned as “degenerate” during the Third Reich, music created in the horrific conditions of ghettos and concentration camps, music created by activist composers who used their art in protest, and works that sample the cultural traditions of different groups – not only Jews – targeted by the Nazi regime. The concerts will also feature new works by contemporary composers inspired to draw on the Holocaust’s lessons as we address challenges to tolerance and human rights in our own time. These performances at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music will be combined with public outreach and educational programs to engage the broader community.

About Music of Remembrance Founded in 1998 by pianist Mina Miller, Music of Remembrance (MOR) fills a unique role throughout the world by remembering the Holocaust through music. With concert performances, educational programs, recordings, and commissions of new works by some of today’s leading composers, MOR honors those of all backgrounds who found the strength to create even in the face of suffering, and those who had the courage to speak out against cruelty. We tell stories that communicate urgent lessons for today, and we look beyond the Holocaust itself to the experience of others who have been excluded or persecuted for their faith, ethnicity, gender or sexuality.

Brandi Carlile, one of the songwriters of Tanya Tucker’s “Bring My Flowers Now,” picked up the Grammy in Best Country Song for the track. She and Tucker also performed the song during the show.

Lil Nas X won the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Old Town Road” with Billy Ray Cyrus. He also took home the Grammy for Best Music Video for “Old Town Road (Official Movie).” Lil Nas X performed the song with Billy Ray Cyrus, BTS, Diplo, Mason Ramsey – all artists who had been featured on “Old Town Road” remixes last year – and Nas. Lil Nas X is also nominated for the GLAAD Media Awards in Outstanding Music Artist.

Lady Gaga picked up two Grammys; one in Best Song Written for Visual Media

for her track “I’ll Never Love Again” from A Star is Born and Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for the A Star is Born soundtrack. of the very best in any musical and match Jerry Brock’s musical compositions like soft kid gloves. The book adaptation by Joe Masteroff of the short story about a Budapest couple who work together and don’t know they’re pen pals is just enough talking to keep everyone on the same page.

I have to opine that this musical is pretty much bullet-proof, so it’s hard to do it badly.

Thank-fully, Karen Lund, usually directing both comedies and musicals at Taproot Theatre, inserts and pulls out many, many moments of fun. She and choreographer Scott Brateng also come up with more moments of choreography than many productions and that increases the delightful moments.

A super portrayal is talented Taryn Darr as the second-banana, the aroused Ilona whose body betrays her when music starts and the seductive song of bad-boy Steven Kodaly (Randy Scholz) lures her back to him. Her butt wiggle and circular shoulder spins are very funny.

A quick synopsis: In an old Hungarian parfumerie (perfume shop) in the 1930s, the owner Mr. Maracek (Eric Polani Jensen) is struggling to keep his staff and shop profitable. Georg Nowack (Eric Ankrim) is his loyal lieutenant and Ilona, Steven, and the lovable but craven Sipos (Mark Emerson) take care of customers. A bike messenger, Arpad (an adorable Rafael Molina), rounds out the staff.

Amalia Balash (Allison Standley) needs a job and shows her talent for selling “anything” to the delight of Maracek and the dismay of Georg. When she’s hired, Georg and she argue a lot. The audience thinks they hate each other. Both, however, are writing to a Dear Friend pen pal and they don’t know it’s each other!

As the seasons change, the Dear Friends are supposed to meet, but in a “charming café,” Georg sees Amalia and loses his nerve and stands her up. The second act redeems him and contains most of the best iconic songs.

Ensemble members Tony Lawson, Matthew Posner, Anasofia Gallegos, Cassi Q Kohl, Christian Quinto and Be Russell become the customers, passers-by and café inhabitants. While they, too, contribute funny bits, their characters are enhanced by the amazingly colorful, bedazzled and decorated costuming by Esther Garcia.

A serviceable moving set by Matthew Smucker could have been helped by better product on the store shelves and a more substantial way of portraying both the café and Amalia’s bedroom. Those moments were visually under-appealing.

The orchestrations were performed beautifully as led by music director R.J. Tancioco. There’s some tricky stuff in there.

The cast throws themselves into it and mines the script for jokes. Ankrim and Standley are well matched and Standley’s comic timing grows over the show to become fully evident at the top of Act 2 while looking for her right shoe.

I can only hope that you’ll fall as deeply in love with this musical as I have. You might even want to go home and look up the lyrics to notice, again, how completely they mesh and rhyme. Sure, this is a classic, but they really are not writing them much like they used to, and often it’s a shame.

Inventively vulgar Gentlemen a violently well-dressed hit

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE GENTLEMEN Now playing The Gentlemen is a journey back to the foul-mouthed criminal underworld prowling British streets for writer/director Guy Ritchie. It is an episodic, all-star mystery overflowing in double, triple and quadruple-crosses that’s in the same vein as the filmmaker’s early audience favorites Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. The film is an aggressively messy comedic explosion that’s never as clever as I kind of think Ritchie feels it is, yet things remain just crafty enough to stay agreeably entertaining first frame to last.

There’s a lot going on from a story perspective, but ultimately it boils down to some fairly easy to follow basics. Londoner Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) wants to sell his secretive and lucrative marijuana empire to retire and spend more time with his wife Rosalind (Michelle Dockery). Wealthy businessman Matthew (Jeremy Strong) is interested in ponying up the $400-million to buy this empire up, while rivals led by triad lieutenant Dry Eye (Henry Golding) want a piece of the action as well. Meanwhile, wily private investigator Fletcher (Hugh Grant) believes he’s discovered a lethal hole in Pearson’s plans, telling his story to the powerful drug lord’s closest confidant Ray (Charlie Hunnam) in hopes of a massive payday that will ensure his silence.

That’s only the start of all the madness.

Soon there are boxing club youngsters shooting videos of themselves getting into brawls and unknowingly stealing millions in Pearson’s product, a recalcitrant Colin Farrell as their acid-tongued coach doing whatever he can to ensure “his boys” don’t end up dead, a heroin-addicted wannabe pop starlet who is returned to her worried Lord and Lady bourgeois parents with nothing

more than a shrug of resigned indifference and a Russian stoner who inexplicably ends up in Ray’s meat freezer after he takes an impromptu skydive over the balcony of a rundown tenement apartment building. At the center of it all is Fletcher, trying to stay one step ahead of everyone as he compiles a dossier on all of this drama’s players.

It’s all unsurprisingly vulgar and violent, and it’s unlikely Ritchie will be winning over any new fans. At the same time those that adored his aforementioned early works will be delighted by what they’ll likely view as a return to form after Aladdin and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. It’s as homoerotic as anything the director has ever made and features a number of gags that dangerously straddle the line between satirizing racist and sexist stereotypes and tropes and impertinently embracing them at the same time. The film is also eccentrically plotted and presented via the point-of-view of an unreliable narrator giving events a razorsharp uncertainty that kept me on my toes.

But the cast is stellar, and that includes the bigger names like McConaughey, Farrell, Golding, Hunnam, Dockery and Grant,

to relative newcomers like Bugzy Malone.

Ritchie uses his actors with vicious cunning, allowing all of them little delectable moments to call their own and almost all of which help flesh out their various characters in any number of curiously creative ways. They give themselves over to the material completely and as such their performances have an electrifying exuberance that feels organically authentic, making even the more questionably risible beats come across from a place of credible authenticity that’s sensational.

Not that there aren’t issues. The material blatantly flirts with offensiveness. You could hear the air suck out of the room when Dry Eye is introduced, the obscene way in which Fletcher initially describes the gangster nothing short of odious. But there are multiple twists that happen less than a second after this noxious jolt of tastelessness, ones that tell the audience a great deal about who Fletcher is and how untrustworthy he is as a narrator. It also allows Golding the opportunity to flip the script on its head as to how he will portray Dry Eye, subverting expectation and convention as he does so, giving the

comedy an extra layer of satiric fastidiousness that’s kind of marvelous.

In regards to Fletcher, it must be said that Grant is magnificent as the oily, acidtongued P.I. I spent all of 2018 championing the actor’s superb work in Paddington 2, fighting tooth and nail for him to follow up his BAFTA Best Supporting Actor nomination for his villainous turn with an Oscar nom as well. That sadly didn’t happen. Nevertheless, I feel like I’m going to be doing much the same in 2020. Grant once again is stunning in a supporting role, his twisty grandeur as he spins his verbal web extraordinary. This performance ranks as one of the best of the actor’s career, and while this isn’t the type of film that typically garners awards talk that doesn’t mean I’m going to be any less vociferous advocating for Grant for the remainder of the year.

There is a moment of sexual violence near the end that didn’t sit well with me at all. While brief, and while it doesn’t go nearly as far as it could have, it still feels more odious and ill-conceived than any other button-pushing element of the motion picture. It also comes across as grotesquely out of character for the primary players involved. It doesn’t work, turning one individual into a prop to give a male character additional agency and the other into a cringe-worthy stereotype that doesn’t fit anything we’ve learned and discovered about them up to that point.

Thankfully, The Gentlemen quickly rebounds from this moment. It races towards an inventive conclusion that brought a smile to my face and sent me out of the theatre with a skip in my step. Ritchie returns to his Brit crime caper roots with thrilling aplomb.

His latest is funny and exciting, featuring crackerjack performances across the board.

Even its more abhorrent elements don’t stick in my craw nearly as much as I kind of feel they should have, the enthusiastic lunacy of what the director has delivered worth the price of a matinee ticket all by itself.

Working from a script via The Conjuring writers Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes, director Floria Sigismondi’s (The Runaways) moody gothic thriller The Turning is a 1990sset reworking of Henry James’ 1898 classic The Turn of the Screw. This new version of the story is gorgeously shot by David Ungaro (Donnybrook), features superb production design from Paki Smith (In Fabric), excellent costumes by Leonie Prendergast (The Man Who Invented Christmas) and a strong score composed by Nathan Barr (The House with a Clock in Its Walls).

The film also has an ending that, to put it kindly, is ferociously underwhelming, the conclusion a bizarre mishmash of purposeful misdirection and ephemeral nonsense that’s as ghastly as it is exasperating. It’s almost as if Sigismondi and the writers are daring the audience to say nice things about their reworking of James’ source material, all

goodwill the first two-thirds generate thrown unceremoniously on the trash heap for reasons I can’t begin to fathom. I don’t know what it is they are attempting to do or what feelings other than annoyance they are trying to generate, and I can’t help but imagine general audiences are going to be so angry by what transpires during the climax they’re likely to walk out afterward several levels beyond incensed.

This is too bad as Sigismondi’s adaptation has a lot going for it. Mackenzie Davis (who after Tully and now this has gotten the ethereal, vaguely supernatural cinematic nanny market cornered) stars as Kate Mandell. She’s taken a position as the governess for wealthy, recently orphaned seven-year-old Flora Fairchild (Brooklynn Prince) after her last nanny ran off in the middle of the night.

Initially excited by the opportunity to play such a vital role in a young girl’s life, Kate quickly realizes not everything is as it seems.

Also, not only is the family’s caretaker Mrs. Grose (Barbara Marten) strangely indifferent to the new woman’s presence, Flora’s 15-yearold brother Miles (Finn Wolfhard) has just arrived home from boarding school after being unceremoniously expelled.

But all of that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Strange happenings are occurring inside the house and on the grounds of the massive estate. Flora is certain if she were to leave through the front gates she would instantly perish. Miles alternates between selfless kindness and lecherous self-destructive hatred. As for Mrs. Grose, she’s the epitome of the unhelpfully creepy housekeeper, sort of a gender-swapped Alfred only without the caring disposition or a single iota of charm or wit. Topping it all off? The estate is likely haunted, all of which makes for a distinctly

psychologically unbalanced location to educate an impressionable youngster.

Initially, there’s a lot to like about The Turning. Even though things start to go ominously wrong a bit too quickly in my opinion, that does not mean Davis, Wolfhard and pint-sized scene-stealer Prince, proving her mesmerizing turn in Sean Baker’s The Florida Project was far from a fluke, aren’t still outstanding. The trio work exceptionally well together, and I liked how they made each emotional transition from one second to the next feel so of the moment and entirely genuine. They are especially good during the film’s midsection where Kate is still trying to put all the pieces of this mysterious puzzle together and Flora and Miles are being mischievously cruel with their inexplicably ingenious trickery.

I also loved the portentous visual spell Sigismondi so effortlessly crafts. Not only does the director know how to unleash an effective and purposeful jump scare, but she also adds little discombobulating touches throughout that kept my pulse racing and my eyes fixed on the screen. A collection of mirrors is put to marvelous use, as are several other wraithlike clues hidden within the frame that hint to the bigger terror Kate is completely ill-prepared to deal with. It’s all pretty darn great, and for a while I began to think Sigismondi’s horror yarn had all the makings of being something memorably special.

Her film is memorable all right. Sadly, it’s for all the wrong reasons. While there are little hints sprinkled throughout that things aren’t necessarily going to fit together as well as I personally might have liked them to, little bookends involving Kate’s psychologically unbalanced artist mother Darla

(Joely Richardson) living in a mental institution in particular, nothing prepared me for just how bonkers the final act was going to be. In trying to put their own spin on James’ source material, the Hayes siblings have come up with a climax that’s so vexing I’m having trouble expressing just how disappointingly distressing it ends up proving to be. As I’ve already stated, I can’t figure out what it is they are trying to say, and the unfinished nature of what it is they’ve come up with is inexcusable.

The Turn of the Screw was already transformed into one of the great horror tales of all-time with The Innocents starring Deborah Kerr and directed by Jack Clayton back in 1961. That movie wasn’t exactly overly reverential to the James story, either, and liberties certainly were taken as far as translating the author’s prose was concerned. But Clayton’s classic adaptation still maintained respect for the source material, and I never doubted for an instance that James’ themes regarding loss, identity, trauma, grief and childhood made it through to the screen intact.

For all of its many technical virtues, and even with the exemplary performances of its central trio, I find that I cannot say the same about The Turning. Based on the way it ends, I’m not so sure there’s very much of James left to be discussed and dissected. It feels to me that the goal of what the writers have done with their adaptation is to manufacture a twisted and terrifying shock no matter what the cost of doing so might be. What happens is completely disconnected from the entirety of the narrative that preceded it.

It sent me out of the theatre scratching my head in disappointment, the terrible taste that was left in my mouth unlikely to dissipate anytime soon.
