by Mike Andrew SGN Staff Writer For the fourth straight year, the US experienced sharp increases in new cases of chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea, according to preliminary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The spike in new STD infections is all the more worrisome because gonorrhea
could soon become resistant to antibiotics, the CDC said in an August 29 statement. Prevention efforts have also stagnated, and people are using condoms less frequently, the CDC added. “We are sliding backward,” Jonathan Mermin, director of the agency’s national STD center, said in a statement. “It is evident the systems that identify, treat, and

by Mike Andrew SGN Staff Writer Sixteen states filed a joint amicus brief with the US Supreme Court on August 23, arguing that Transgender workers have no rights under federal law.
Their brief was filed in the case R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes, Inc. v. EEOC, in which a Transgender woman, Aimee Stephens, argues she was unlawfully fired by the funeral home because of her gender identity.
