WASHINGTON, DC (July 18, 2019) – Today, the US House of Representatives voted to pass the Raise the Wage Act of 2019, which would raise wages for nearly 40 million workers. The Raise the Wage Act would increase the minimum wage to $8.55 this year and raise it gradually over

the next six years, to $15 an hour in 2025. After 2025, the minimum wage would be adjusted annually to keep pace with growth in the typical worker’s wages. The Act would phase out the outdated subminimum wage for tipped workers, which has been

Trump administration attempts to end asylum protections for Central Americans

SEATTLE (July 18, 2019) – On Monday, the Trump administration announced its latest efforts to end asylum protections for Central American migrants. The new rule would require asylum-seekers to seek asylum in countries they pass through (namely Mexico and Guatemala) before arriving in

the United States. This policy expands on the already present “Remain in Mexico” policy, which requires migrants to live in Mexico while they await their asylum hearing. This policy, which is aimed at halting the migration of “economic migrants,”
